I planted so many potatoes this week and I think I'm going to set out my zucchini plants tomorrow morning. I'm nervous, because there's a general inspection of the allotment tomorrow, to make sure we're taking care of them correctly. Logically, I know that the worst thing they can possibly tell me is that I need to keep up with the weeding better, but my anxiety is on overdrive. Ugh.

You're going to eat so well from these plants!! That is some great choices, wow.

Inspection here is only to make sure the community gardens are being used - only if they're completely abandoned they will be given to new people, and that's if they have weeds and nothing else on them for months. Still, I'd get nervous too, I completely get it. Garden is something so personal and private, it chills me that anyone would have the right to 'inspect' it.

Also if you live in a hot area it's okay not to weed during summer, as weeds help draw out moisture from the soil and keep it closer to your garden plants, I completely abandon weeding as soon as it's hot.

I think allotments might be an almost uniquely British thing where residents can apply for parcels of land for non-commercial agriculture. We’ve had this for about 5 years and share the work and produce with some friends.

It’s hard work, but there is nothing quite like the taste of sweetcorn that was on the plant twenty minutes before it went in one’s mouth.

my carrots actually grew Carrots and this is a big thing bc i am shit at growing root vegetables!!! success!!!! okay they're only small but normally i get jack all so i'm getting better at it. For value of getting better i mean i planted the seeds and have ignored them totally for the past couple of months, but still. Right direction.

i woke up obscenely early today because the sun rose before four in the morning, so i ended up at my allotment around five and finally met the mythical person with the allotment next to mine who grows exclusively raspberries (60 m² of raspberries). she's this lovely woman in her fifties who simply loves raspberries and told me about her favourite variety out of the dozen she has right now (purple glen coe).
