Drunk
Benedict has various spirits in a flask. He decides to let a hurt Eloise and Edwina try.
2x07 AU in which everyone attended the Bridgerton Harmony ball.
Eloise was sitting in the garden, having escaped their mother's Harmony Ball. She hated smiling, the noblemen who wanted her to be silent and pretty.
"Still sad about Theo," Benedict observed, walking towards her. She frowned at her brother who offered his flask and she took it, taking a healthy swig.
"Not too much." Benedict frowned, "I was given the bottle by a... friend." She gave him a knowing look, wondering which of his 'friends' gave it to him.
"It tastes nice."
"Ameretto, it's from Italy." He explained. She hummed in contentment.
"It isn't so much Theo, as it is me. I feel different. He is a good friend but I..." Eloise shook her head and Benedict looked concerned, "Do not worry, nothing awful has happened."
"Good, because I would have had to have a few words with him," Benedict said and Eloise pushed him playfully.
Edwina had decided to wander around the gardens. Her face hurt from smiling so much. She did not want to be here, at all. She hated how Anthony and Kate would smile at one another, as if nothing awful had happened. She also hated that she had not seen their feelings for one another, so
"Oh, sorry!" She happened upon the two Bridgerton siblings.
"It's alright, Miss Edwina" Benedict said.
"Join the false happiness party. We are tired of the ball too." Eloise encouraged. She cautiously sat on the other side of Benedict, glad they were not being too pitying towards her.
"Have a taste," Benedict offered her the flask, "Join the imposter party," She hesitated before taking it and sipping the sweet alcohol.
"That is rather nice." Edwina admitted, "I am glad to find some kinship"
They passed the flask between the three of them, talking about the season, books, and Benedict's art. She liked that they were being friendly and normal and they liked her ability to try to cheer herself up.
Edwina and Eloise giggled as they went back inside the ball, both more drunk than intended.
"They seem happy." Lady Danbury observed, seeing the girls.
"At least she is cheering up," Mary said with a small smile. Kate was watching Edwina after having danced with Colin, then Anthony. She could not find her sister afterwards
The two girls decided to be each other's partners in the next dance, waving away any attempts by other suitors.
"Aww, I'm glad Eloise is finally having fun this season," Daphne said, seeing the two skip around. Simon looked closer.
When Eloise missed a step and fell forward, both girls laughed as if it was the funniest thing in the world, whilst others looked on amused.
"Too much fun," Simon murmured to Daphne who immediately realised what he meant.
"Oh no."
"What's wrong?" They were both startled by Violet who had come to watch the girls dance. It was not the most proper affair, but the two girls needed some fun after the past few weeks.
"I... forgot to give Auggie his teddy. It's his favourite. I must have left it in the carriage." Daphne excused.
"He will be crying all night until we return," Simon backed her up and the Lady gave them both a sympathetic smile. Simon decided to take Violet for a walk around the ballroom, so that his wife may sort out the two young debutantes.
Daphne pulled Anthony from where he was standing at the refreshment table, getting a lemonade for Kate and Mary. He looked at his sister confused, considering she had grabbed his arm.
"You will need to bring those to El and Edwina. It appears they are rather..." Daphne just indicated at the two girls laughing hysterically.
"Oh dear God," Anthony muttered. Just what they needed. He looked for Colin and Benedict, wondering which of his brothers he would kill at the end of the evening. He approached them as the dance ended.
"Eloise, here. Lemonade." Anthony gave it to her and she took it with an uncharacteristic beaming smile. She was very much in her cups.
Anthony cleared his throat and handed her the lemonade, "Miss Edwina. A refreshment."
"Thank you." She gasped and he was relieved. Then she decided to throw it all over his shirt and people around the gasped and giggled as the Viscount looked down, aghast.
"Oops!" She giggled but there was no remorse as she and Eloise cackled.
"An accident." He assured with a stiff smile, "It is alright." Kate came over, looking at Anthony's shirt and her younger sister sniggering.
"Why do we not get you-" Kate tried
"My sister and the Viscount are to be married! Isn't it wonderful! Kate will stay in England after all!" Edwina rambled loudly, "She was fine with leaving me but not him!"
"That is not fair. I wouldn't stay for the Viscount!" Eloise agreed
Mr Dorset came along, havgn seen the situation and for once, Anthony welcomed the doctor's presence, "Why do we not take the girls for a lie-down? A bout of hysteria, that's all. Young women tend to get tired near the end of the season" He knew that was not the case but felt the need to protect the two girls from further scandal.
"Thank you, Mr Dorset," Kate said as he helped Edwina and she helped Eloise, Mary and Violet close behind.
"Men are so dramatic," Eloise muttered.
...
The next morning, Eloise awoke first, wincing at the sunlight beaming into her room. Edwina was next to her, sound asleep. That was unusual but not unwelcome. She pushed that thought away, her headache causing her to flop onto her pillow, waking Edwina
"Oh, that is too bright!" Edwina complained pulling the cover over her head. Then she realised she was not in her bed at home and looked at Eloise, "Oh. Good morning."
At that moment, Violet and Mr Dorset came in and both girls looked at one another, nervous.
"Lady Bridgerton-" Edwina croaked
"Do not worry, Miss Edwina. Your mother and sister are downstairs, joining us for breakfast." Violet assured her, "The two of you insisted on sharing. You claimed that it would upset Newton if you were to be separated," She supplied, biting her lip, trying not to laugh. Edwina's face warmed, vaguely recalling how the two stuck to one another.
"I recommend a hearty Fully English," Thomas said with a kind smile and a maid nodded, going down to the kitchens.
"Thank you, doctor." Violet smiled politely and he nodded politely.
"Plenty of rest today, girls." He recommended, "But I will compliment you on an entertaining evening, Lady Bridgerton." With that, he smiled and left.
"What is a 'Full English?" Edwina asked, confused.
"Fried Eggs, beans, tomato sauce, black pudding, sausages and toast," Eloise explained tiredly, "You'll like it."
The two dressed for the day and trudged downstairs, arms linked together.
"Good morning."
"I hate you." Eloise sniped at her favourite brother who smiled, amused.
"I already got a lecture from Anthony. Only to give the two of you lemonade or juice. Not spiked." He winked.
The two girls sat at the table as the Bridgerton siblings held back smirks and laughs. Mary poured Edwina a cup of coffee and harshly placed the cup on the table.
"Amma!" Edwina winced at the clatter of the coffee cup. Eloise did too, the sound echoing in her ears.
"Good." Mary kissed her on the head, "That means no more spirits or either of you."
"Very much agreed," Violet concluded.
"I apologise for my behaviour last night, Lady Bridgerton and you, Mama. I know you were holding this to salvage my reputation and I rather spoilt it."
"It was rather entertaining, looking back. Everyone found it more amusing than anything." Violet said.
"Even Lady Whistledown is forgiving," Colin remarked, reading out the pamphlet, "The Diamond appears to be more fun than one realised. Perhaps her newfound freedom after her failed nuptials are allowing her to have more fun during the season."
Their breakfast arrived and Edwina was hesitant to try it, but found she actually liked it. Even the black pudding, though no one would tell her what it was made of.
Anthony and Kate walked in, Kate had gone back to Lady Danbury's with her mother last night. It was clear that they had one of their intense moments and Kate decided to sit next to Edwina who was eating happily.
"How are you feeling, Edwina?" Kate asked. She did not know where the two stood, considering everything.
"Sorry I ruined the ball," Edwina said quietly, finally looking at Kate who shook her head.
"You did not ruin anything. I'm sorry I did not keep a better eye on you." Kate said.
"And Anthony's shirt?" Colin asked cheekily.
"He ruined my wedding." She said unapologetically simply taking a bite out of her toast. The Viscount winced and looked away from her.
...
Kate approached Edwina later that afternoon, where she was curled up reading in her room.
"Lady Danbury suggested I stay here in silent contemplation. She was not as angry as I thought she would be." Edwina supplied.
In fact, she had found it rather amusing.
"You were upset that I was not staying after you marry?" Kate wanted to broach the subject.
Edwina put her book down, "I was." She did remember her saying that.
"I did not think you would want me around after you married." Kate explained, sitting down next to her.
"Why would I not? I asked mama to stay in England and she agreed. It is why I wanted Mr Dorset to court you." Edwina said, "If you would not stay for me, you would fall in love with a nice man and I would still see you! But you stay for him."
"I do not love Anthony more than you. That would be impossible." Kate pleaded, "I am sorry, I will always be sorry for wrecking your happiness. That will always haunt me, seeing you so hurt."
"It was not so much you but him. He was in love with you yet pretended to be in love with me. I feel like such an idiot." Edwina said, "If he does not even want me then what chance do I have with any other suitor? Our family will be ruined!"
"You have choices. All those men last night at the ball, some were asking me if they could visit you when things die down. Lord Lumley, Mr Dorset himself even. He may have been charmed by me, but he said he finds you really charming and I told him how much you love learning. He admired that."
Edwina looked at her, surprised. Kate was still trying to find her someone to make her happy, despite how awful she had been towards her.
"You were still looking for another suitor for me?"
"That is all I have wanted. Even though we have hurt one another in recent weeks, you will always be my sister." Kate told her, "And I know I will have to work to regain your trust, but I want you loved."
"You have it," Edwina whispered and she looked at her so relieved and hopeful, smiling tearfully.
"I'm sorry for calling you my half-sister. You are my favourite, the best sister. That was cruel and unnecessary. I was so angry, I thought that the two of you had done the whole thing to make me look a fool." Edwina shrugged, "I was heartbroken and I should not have taken it out on you."
"Never." Kate promised, "I should have told you about myself and the Viscount before. You did hurt me, Ed. We have been hurting one another so much."
"I know. I will forever be sorry. I just know Appa would be disappointed in me." Edwina said.
"Just a little." Kate admitted, "But he could never stay angry with either of us for long." He was terrible at times out and punishments for his girls.
"Can we start again?" Edwina asked, "Just us. Forget about the Viscount. If he makes you happy and it means you will stay, then that is what matters to me, more than anything. So that we can be best friends again."
Kate hugged her, "I'm so glad I have your blessing. And yes, let us start again. But we have always been best friends and sisters. That will never change. Will you give the Viscount his blessing? Not now, but when you feel less hostile?"
Edwina nodded. She would need a few days, even a few weeks but she would speak with the Viscount, "Am I to apologise for his shirt?"
"It was rather funny." Kate admitted and they both giggled, "His face! I think he believed you were truly a soft delicate thing!"
They both laughed, "Well then, he knows not to mess with either of us."
...
Eloise was sitting in her own room, not wanting to speak with anyone. Benedict had checked in on her. Violet decided it was her turn to take a look in on her daughter.
"I know. I will never drink again, especially with Ben." She said, ready for her scolding.
"That was not- Well, yes. Please do not drink with your brother again." Violet laughed slightly, "But, I have to ask, what is wrong Eloise?"
"I'm not like you and Daphne, or even Fran. I can't do all of this. Try to impress men who I do not care about nor am I attracted to!" Eloise ranted, "I don't want to. I feel more attracted to the women I read about than..." She shook her head, seeing her mother's surprised look, "Perhaps I should be admitted to Bedlam."
"There is nothing wrong with you." Violet emphasised, holding her hands, "Nothing. It would pain me more if you pretended to be someone you were not. Oh, dearest. I just want you happy."
"So... I do not have to marry this season?" Eloise asked hopefully.
"I believe two weddings in this family is enough for one season," Violet assured and Eloise chuckled, leaning into her mother for a hug.
