#and 4 hour pre-vacation self-care videos

the RAMPANT consumerism on the section of youtube I have ended up on recently is actually kind of disgusting to me. if I see one more video of a perfectly manicured hand with a hint of a sweater sleeve putting things in a target cart or using 100 bottles for a skin and hair self-care day or using 50 different cleaning products in an enormous, pristine, white home while a random pop song remix plays in the background I'm going to start destroying things.
#I know exactly how I got here#there is a specific crossover of decluttering/production hacks/workout plans/minimalism/motivational videos that leads directly#to very wealthy stay-at-home women doing sunday resets and target hauls and restocking and organizing the guest bedroom#and 4 hour pre-vacation self-care videos#but it is so BAD. I am not saying don't buy things or take care of yourself or anything like that#I literally have mentioned several times in the past two weeks that I was waiting on packages in the mail!#but GOD. the difference between buying a set of dvds I'm going to use until they fall apart#and literally having 4 bookcases of skin care products is ASTRONOMICAL#I cannot imagine a single reason anyone would ever need that much stuff#and it's All so sanitized and perfected and nothing can be out of place and it's just awful#that girl aesthetic/it girl/clean girl aesthetic/etc etc#and every single woman in these videos is perfectly shaped and tanned and hair done up#and they all wear these matching set workout fits#just oh my god girl!!!!!! what are you doing????!!!!!??#I don't know. I don't know that there's a point to this besides me complaining and being upset#but it's just so antithetical to the way I want to live and I know it's so bad for the environment#and I know it is encouraging so many people to look and act just like that#and I hate it!!!! it feels like we are never getting out sometimes for real#maybe I'm being mean. maybe they are actually very conscientious of the environment#and maybe they are only showing a once a month shopping trip#and maybe they have just been sent a ton of PR packages that they have to figure out how to store#but. it really doesn't feel or look that way

American tourists face bans and restrictions across the world amid pandemic (Yahoo) The reputation and prestige once associated with a passport from the United States have suffered as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. For Americans right now, traveling is harder than ever before—they aren’t welcome in the majority of the world’s countries because of the U.S. response to the outbreak. As a result, the U.S. passport ranking has fallen 50% in the last year, down from the no. 3 spot to the no. 19 spot in the Passport Index. “The American passport was always in the top five passports over the last five years,” Armand Arton, founder of Passport Index, told Yahoo Money. Pre-pandemic, an American passport holder could access 70% of the world’s countries without a visa. Arton said the “only reason” for America’s sudden fall from grace was the coronavirus. “It is not foreign policy,” he said. “It is not the visa restrictions. It is really the temporary limitation of travel of U.S. citizens, based on the fact that the rest of the world doesn’t want U.S. citizens coming to their countries.”
Millennials and younger are new US majority (AP) Sorry, boomers. Millennials and their younger siblings and children now make up a majority of the U.S. population. A new analysis by the Brookings Institution shows that 50.7% of U.S. residents were under age 40, as of July 2019. The Brookings’ analysis of population estimates released this summer by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the combined millennial, Generation Z and younger generations numbered 166 million people. The combined Generation X, baby boomer, and older cohorts represented 162 million U.S. residents. Millennials typically are defined as being born between 1981 and 1996. Baby boomers, long considered a primary driver of demographic and social change in the U.S. because of their large numbers, were born between the end of World War II and the arrival of the Beatles in the U.S. in 1964.
The Pandemic Workday Is 48 Minutes Longer and Has More Meetings (Bloomberg) We log longer hours. We attend more meetings with more people. And, we send more emails. From New York City to Tel Aviv, the telecommuting revolution has meant a lot more work, according to a study of 3.1 million people at more than 21,000 companies across 16 cities in North America, Europe and the Middle East. The researchers compared employee behavior over two 8 week periods before and after Covid-19 lockdowns. Looking at email and meeting meta-data, the group calculated the workday lasted 48.5 minutes longer, the number of meetings increased about 13% and people sent an average of 1.4 more emails per day to their colleagues. During the two month time frame, there was one part of working that did improve: Those additional meetings were shorter, according to the analysis by researchers at Harvard Business School and New York University.
Pandemic Is Changing the Military, From Boot Camp to Office Work (Bloomberg) The U.S. military is finding its footing and changing how it operates as cases of the coronavirus keep rising. The services have been forced to continue widespread use of quarantines and to rethink future training, deploying, and day-to-day work. The virus curve has shot up from 10,462 cumulative cases in early June to 37,824 total cases by late July, according to the Defense Department. The figure includes more than 14,300 current infections among active-duty troops, as well as total cases reported among civilian workers, dependents and contractors since the pandemic began.
Seeking refuge in US, children fleeing danger are expelled (AP) When officers led them out of a detention facility near the U.S.-Mexico border and onto a bus last month, the 12-year-old from Honduras and his 9-year-old sister believed they were going to a shelter so they could be reunited with their mother in the Midwest. They had been told to sign a paper they thought would tell the shelter they didn’t have the coronavirus, the boy said. The form was in English, a language he and his sister don’t speak. The only thing he recognized was the letters “COVID.” Instead, the bus drove five hours to an airport where the children were told to board a plane. “They lied to us,” he said. “They didn’t tell us we were going back to Honduras.” More than 2,000 unaccompanied children have been expelled since March under an emergency declaration enacted by the Trump administration, which has cited the coronavirus in refusing to provide them protections under federal anti-trafficking and asylum laws. Lawyers and advocates have sharply criticized the administration for using the global pandemic as a pretext to deport children to places of danger. No U.S. agents looked at the video the boy had saved on his cellphone showing a hooded man holding a rifle, saying his name, and threatening to kill him and his sister, weeks after the uncle caring for them was shot dead in June. And even though they were expelled under an emergency declaration citing the virus, they were never tested for COVID-19, the boy said.
Coronavirus surprise: Remittances to Mexico rise during pandemic (Washington Post) It was an intuitive prediction, supported by virtually every expert who had studied the subject: As the coronavirus pandemic caused the global economy to tumble, remittances to Mexico and Central America would crash. It turns out the forecast was wrong. Instead of collapsing, remittances to Mexico were up year-over-year in five of the first six months of 2020. In June, payments to El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras also increased compared to the same period in 2019, after a dip earlier this year. In March, the month the World Health Organization declared a pandemic, remittances to Mexico topped $4 billion—a record. Across the United States, migrants and the children of migrants say they have prioritized sending money to family in Mexico and Central America during the pandemic.
Economy tanking, Cuba launches some long-delayed reforms (AP) With its airports closed to commercial flights and its economy tanking, Cuba has launched the first in a series of long-promised reforms meant to bolster the country’s struggling private sector. The island’s thousands of restaurants, bed-and-breakfasts, auto mechanics and dozens of other types of private businesses have operated for years without the ability to import, export or buy supplies in wholesale markets. While the communist government began allowing widespread private enterprise a decade ago, it maintained a state monopoly on imports, exports and wholesale transactions. As a result, the country’s roughly 613,000 private business owners have been forced to compete for scarce goods in Cuba’s understocked retail outlets or buy on the black market. That has limited the private sector’s growth and made entrepreneurs a constant target of criminal investigation. With the essential tourism business cut off by the novel coronavirus and the government running desperately low on hard currency, the government last month announced that it would allow private restaurants to buy wholesale for the first time. Ministers also announced that private businesspeople could sign contracts to import and export goods through dozens of state-run companies with import/export licenses.
Former Colombian president placed under house arrest (Economist) Colombia’s Supreme Court ordered that Álvaro Uribe, a conservative former president, be placed under house arrest. It is examining whether Mr Uribe had tried to tamper with witnesses in an investigation that he instigated against a left-wing senator. Mr Uribe, the mentor of Colombia’s current president, Iván Duque, is the first sitting or former president since the 1950s to be detained.
Emergency lockdown in Scotland (Foreign Policy) Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon moved quickly to impose a partial lockdown in the city of Aberdeen on Wednesday, after 54 new cases of COVID-19 were reported. The outbreak was linked to a bar, leading Sturgeon to close all pubs in the city and impose a ban on all non-essential travel. Sturgeon told reporters that the lockdown was a necessary measure. “We need to take decisive action now in order to prevent a larger outbreak and further harm later on,” she said.
Closed for vacation: France faces new virus testing troubles (AP) With virus cases rising anew, France is struggling to administer enough tests to keep up with demand. One reason: Many testing labs are closed so that their staff can take summer vacation, just as signs of a second wave are building. Testing troubles have plagued the U.S. and other countries too. But France’s August ritual of fleeing cities for weeks of holiday rest on seashores, mountainsides or grandma’s country house is an added tangle. “Closed for vacation” signs dangle from door after door across Paris this month, from bakeries to shoe shops and iconic cafes. Doctor’s offices and labs are no exception. Their staff need a rest more than ever this difficult year. But this August, socially distanced lines snake outside the scattered Paris labs that remain open, from the Left Bank to the city’s northern canals. Trying to get a test appointment can take a week or more. So can getting results.
Pakistan stands behind Kashmir (Foreign Policy) On the first anniversary of the Indian government’s decision to revoke Kashmir’s special autonomous status, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan heaped criticism on his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, and reiterated his support for Kashmiri self-determination. In a statement, Khan called Indian activity in the region since the move a “crime against humanity,” and in a subsequent address to the legislative assembly, he said Modi has been “exposed in the world.” One year later, the region is still saturated with troops, communications are slow, and arrests are a routine part of daily life.
He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (Foreign Policy) Anti-government protests took place in Thailand earlier this week as demands for limits on the power of the monarchy grow. Due to strict laws forbidding criticism of royals, the demonstrations featured a happy twist. Many of the 200 activists showed up dressed as Harry Potter and other characters from the popular book and film series in an effort to draw parallels between their fight against the government and Harry Potter’s battle against the totalitarianism of Lord Voldemort.
Survivors mark 75th anniversary of world’s 1st atomic attack (AP) HIROSHIMA, Japan—Survivors of the world’s first atomic bombing gathered in diminished numbers near an iconic, blasted dome Thursday to mark the attack’s 75th anniversary, many of them urging the world, and their own government, to do more to ban nuclear weapons. An upsurge of coronavirus cases in Japan meant a much smaller than normal turnout, but the bombing survivors’ message was more urgent than ever. As their numbers dwindle—their average age is about 83—many nations have bolstered or maintained their nuclear arsenals, and their own government refuses to sign a nuclear weapons ban treaty. The United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, destroying the city and killing 140,000 people. The United States dropped a second bomb three days later on Nagasaki, killing another 70,000. Japan surrendered Aug. 15, ending World War II and its nearly half-century of aggression in Asia. But the decades since have seen the weapons stockpiling of the Cold War and a nuclear standoff among nations that continues to this day.
As Smoke Clears in Beirut, Shock Turns to Anger (NYT) Since an orphaned shipment of highly explosive chemicals arrived at the port of Beirut in 2013, Lebanese officials treated it the way they have dealt with the country’s lack of electricity, poisonous tap water and overflowing garbage: by bickering and hoping the problem might solve itself. But the 2,750 tons of high-density ammonium nitrate combusted Tuesday, officials said, unleashing a shock wave on the Lebanese capital that gutted landmark buildings, killed 135 people, wounded at least 5,000 and rendered hundreds of thousands of residents homeless. Beirut’s governor said the damage extended over half of the city, estimating it at $3 billion. The government has vowed to investigate the blast and hold those responsible to account. But as residents waded through the warlike destruction on Wednesday to salvage what they could from their homes and businesses, many saw the explosion as the culmination of years of mismanagement and neglect by the country’s politicians. And with the country already deep in the throes of a major economic crisis, residents had no idea how they would afford to rebuild. Because of the financial crisis, banks have placed strict limits on cash withdrawals to prevent runs.
U.S. eyes Saudi nuclear program (NYT) American intelligence agencies are scrutinizing efforts by Saudi Arabia, working with China, to build up its ability to produce nuclear fuel. A classified analysis has raised alarms that doing so could be a cover to process uranium and move toward development of a weapon, U.S. officials told The Times. American officials have searched for decades for evidence that the Saudis are moving toward a nuclear weapon, and the kingdom has made no secret of its determination to keep pace with Iran. But the spy agencies have been reluctant to warn of progress, for fear of repeating the colossal intelligence mistake that led to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Episode Recap of "It's All Greek To Me" July 30, 2018 Was there also a Josiah wedding episode that night? If there was, I already recapped the mini episode so I have no interest in doing it again. 1. January 2018: Josiah is primping in the boys' fire hazard of a room and is suspiciously using more deodorant than normal. All signs lead to Josiah asking a girl to court again. Why does the boys' room need a single mattress laying on the floor when it already has four triple bunk beds? Why is there a photo of a young pre-kids Jim Bob and Michelle in the boys' room? Josiah is planning an extremely casual courtship proposal. He's dressed in a long sleeve t-shirt, old jeans and sneakers. He's going to interrupt the girls who will be eating dinner together just in time for dessert. And that's about it. I get the feeling they rushed the courtship proposal to happen after Lauren and her family moved to Duggarland and just before they left for their trip to Australia. Lauren was going on the trip and they knew word may get out especially since she joined Josiah on stage and while autographing books.  The Swanson's new house is really nice. I wonder if Jim Bob owns it. I wouldn't be surprised if he did. It was sad they left Lauren's sister at home instead of inviting her along. She looked kind of bummed. At their favorite restaurant, Market Place Grill, Jana, Jessa, Joy and Kendra dine with the newest sacrificial lamb, Lauren. That Market Place Grill must be owned by a Duggar-like thinker. Why else would they advertise it all the time. Josiah says he likes that Lauren "has a head on her shoulders and working on college and stuff like that." Then the girls mention that she just graduated, which I assume means high school since she was only 18 at the time. The "working on college and stuff" must mean taking an online course or two. Josiah just mentions this because he knows the criticism the family gets about rejecting a college education. He rejected it himself to work in daddy's car lot. They also mention video chatting for five hours once and Jessa talks about her phone conversations with Ben which she claims were private even though we were led to believe those were chaperoned. Remember Jana following Jinger on that fake camping trip when she was chatting with Jeremy on the phone? Why are they trying to diss their own rules? Why are they trying to look normal now? It's too late for that! Lauren is health conscience which is nice to hear because Josiah is not. Jessa says Josiah always has a bag of candy with him. That's because his parents train their kids to do work for candy. See how that backfires! I hope Lauren can break him of that addiction. Josiah sneaks in, gets a sidehug from Lauren, asks her to court in which she says yes, and then grabs somebody's dessert and chows down. Six months later they are married and working hard on bible sex. 2. September 2017: Joe and Kendra are headed to Greece after their wedding and their week-long after wedding vacation. Duggars always wait about a week before heading out on their honeymoons just in case the non-Duggar spouse ends up freaking out from all the explicit exposed unchaperoned Duggary. They do the hand holding while driving Duggary and the talking about being unchaperoned on this honeymoon while a crew of 20 follow them onto the plane Duggary. They arrive in Athens and do the Duggary thing of visiting a religious site first. They pose for selfies which looks like it might end in being a special episode of Dateline as Kendra teeters on the rocks. They eat dinner on a platform that is lifted a hundred feet up by a crane. Why is that even a thing? Joe shows his food deprived past in this scene by digging into his food like a starving wolf. He ignores the scenery and the other people around him when there is food in front of him. He has a habit of licking his plate which he blames Jessa for teaching him that particular lovely skill. Kendra chats with a lady, who was probably hired by TLC, as Joe stuffs his face. The lady asks if Kendra is working. Kendra says, "No, I'm just going to stay at home." Then she quickly adds that she'll help Joe sell cars. How long are selling used cars going to support all those marrying Duggar boys and their families? They better come up with another plan fast! The lady is shocked to hear Joe comes from a family of 19 kids and asks about Michelle's health and if Jim Bob ran away. We wish! Then the Acropolis pops up in the conversation and the producer asks the Duggars a silly question. She asks if they know any Greek gods. Jeer says Napoleon. Does that count? Jeremy can name one but Ben is the Greek god expert. Shame on Jeremy. He went to a public high school and graduated from college. I studied Greek mythology in Junior High. 3. Sometime in 2017. Before Baby Bump: Jinger and Jeremy show up just to prove they are still alive. They are randomly going to an art class for a date and Jinger is stressed. Jinger is unfortunately very self-conscious. The producer gets all the Duggar couples and Josiah and Jason and Jeer and Jed to draw portraits of each other. It's a very cute scene where the Duggars actually come off as regular people. They need to do stuff like this more often. I especially like Joy and Austin goofing around and the glowing Jessa who calls herself a cougar. Very cute but still boring reality TV. 4. Back to September 2017: Joken hit the subway where Joe says Si to a guy who helped them out. Just like his dad. Spanglish is the universal Duggar language. Then to a walking food tour to explore Greek foods. Kendra doesn't like slimy food so her spinach treat went right down Joe's throat and Joe hates olives so Kendra kissing him with olive breath almost caused a quickie divorce but the meat market was the big gross out. I liked when the lady showed them testicles and how Joe quickly backed up and said, "Oh!".  Protect those family jewels, Joe! They then do the obligatory Duggar cooking class where they make a Greek salad. They are both surprised lettuce is not included in the recipe. Oh brother... Now they're off to Santorini to giggle, drive an atv thing, act out the Titanic movie (I bet they only saw the movie poster), and board surf where some guys giggled at the couple's modest swimwear. I guess they don't see long skirts worn in the water much in Greece. We find out in a talking head that Ben irons his t-shirts and jeans. Yeah, I just don't know what to say about that. His dad seems kind of prissy so I'm sure he got it from him. 5. November 2017: It's Benessa's third wedding anniversary and Ben has sent Jessa out to get her daily pedicure. How many times can we watch the Duggar women have their feet catered to? I would love to see Jessa sent to the hair salon for a couple of feet chopped off and some highlights put in. She says, "Ben is finishing up school and he has another year to go." I didn't know Ben was in school. Ben has been extremely private the last 18 months or so. Take note, Derick. I guess he's working on becoming a pastor. Hopefully, a well-rounded pastor. Ben is the dream husband on this day. He cooks a healthy dinner, takes good care of the baby and designs jewelry. I'll be your cougar, Ben! For a day. 6. September 2017: Joken end their honeymoon, not really, in Fira, Greece. They say they're going back to Arkansas but the Duggars usually do two honeymoons back to back. One with crew and one without. A theater group dances and sings their way passed the couple and get them to throw plates and yell "Opa". That's all fine but Joe is kind of thrown by the kisses to the cheeks by a woman who isn't his wife. 7. August 5, 2018: Well, that's it! Little Joe is married. He's having sex! As much sex as he wants because Kendra is staying home just for that purpose. He got a free honeymoon paid for by TLC. He was given a house and a job by his daddy. He already has his first child and is working hard on a second. So, what is Joe doing for God? Was God's plan for him to live off of others and serve his own needs? What is Joe doing for the less fortunate? Oh, he is the less fortunate. Without his dad he has nothing.

6 Holiday Best Practices to ace your CPA Exams
A bucket list of ideas and plans might be waiting in your calendar as the holiday season is just around the corner. But what if you are preparing for your US CPA? Yes, the intensive US CPA exams need time and dedication as it involves complex accounting concepts to land you into edging roles at leading Big 4 and leading MNCs. Distractions are inescapable during the holidays as you might be tempted to social gatherings, guests and celebrations, but here are 6 interesting tips to navigate the holiday season and zero down your focus on your preparations to ace your CPA exams.
Prioritize US CPA Study
You have all the chance to remit your social gatherings, but not your investment done at one of the best CPA Review Institute in India. So placing CPA study preparations as the top priority can help you clear CPA exams sooner than later. Holiday promises you two advantages to ace your CPA exams: freedom and time, otherwise studying under commitment pressure would ruin your career as a result of hasty preparations.
Schedule your Study
To keep track of your preparation, you need to build a weekly or monthly CPA study calendar. A study schedule is a great guide that will help you evaluate your study progress and assess your panic stations or potentials while you are preparing for an edging CPA career ahead. There are times you might be interrupted by personal commitments and a regular update of events on the study calendar can help work-study-life balance and stay on track with your studies.
Collaborate
Monotonous study process can help you in a great way avoiding external discussions. But the competitive business world today is greatly looking out for people with core competency skills in the accounting and finance world. We often fail to realize certain underscoring factors like group study and discussions via online platforms can breed innovative ideas, eliminate procrastination, and understand new and latest trends to fill knowledge gaps in the accounting world which you may be unfamiliar with.
Set a Time
To successfully complete your US CPA course, you need defined study intervals. One of the best study times would be mornings as it keeps your energy and concentration levels higher than any other part of the day. One of the advantages of studying in the mornings is the freshness that daylight brings which prevents you from putting off late studying and avoids interrupting your sleep schedules.
Gadgets are Disruptive
Gadgets are of great value but that shouldn’t upturn the value of your US CPA exam scores hampering the quality of your preparation. Landing into Big 4s and top MNCs is highly competitive and demanding, accounting professionals need to care about success and understand the career world is looking out for top scorers, hence keeping out disrupting gadgets away during study hours as you own the career success.
Online CPA Materials
MCQs, Simulations, e-Book, Master Classes, Webinars, and pre-recorded Video Lectures are potential online materials that will allow you to study on the go. Choose a CPA training institute that provides as part of the CPA course fees a package of online materials and resources are convenient routes to make learning possible anywhere and anytime. The Ugly Life of a Cinematographer
Ive been so busy here in Iran currently filming "Layers of Lies" that I haven't had a chance for a day off to take a look around as to whats been going on in my personal life. So many people inbox me on social media mentioning how much they would love to be in my position or joining me on set and doing what i am doing. I admit I absolutely love what I do and have been very fortunate to have had some amazing projects come my way. With all those people on the outside seeing my career as an opportunity for adventure, art and travelling around the world, they don't really see what the bigger part of this career choice has to hold.
I love what I do and you couldn't bribe me to change my field of work, this is what I live for. In saying that though there are some hidden truths behind the curtain of what really lies behind the life of a DOP or pretty much most people working in the film industry. What I am about to write below is based on my own personal experiences. But through my eyes and ears on my travels around film sets around the world, I think 90% of film buffs can relate to what is below. So for those who have always wanted to work in film or just want to take some insight into the life of doing film, here are some ugly truths about my profession.
9-5 DOES NOT EXIST
There is no such thing as a normal 40 hour week in this field. I don't recall the last time i had a 10 or 20 minute break every 3-4 hours. Its always been go go go. If regular hours or a routine is very important to you, than I would suggest you to move onto another career because it will simply NEVER happen in the film industry.
I think 95% of the time doing my job and making sure its done right means I need to put in extra hours, effort and energy to get the best quality results. Its always showing up early and leaving late. Even when I get home or to my accomodation when working away, im always having to do more research, pre-plan, run over pre-vis again and again and always checking out what the latest trends in the industry are just to ensure things are set straight and in order. Especially on lengthy projects like feature films I have to spend extra time in pre production with location scouting, prepping, pre-vis or ensuring the edit or color grade goes correctly for the story. Most of the time you do these extra chores with little or no extra pay and always during your own free time without any thank you's or recognition. This is where you just suck it up and push on through, as a true professional should.
The film industry is not a place where you can just sit and have things handed to you. If you are not willing to make sacrifices of your own time and you own schedules to further your career or skills, then honestly move on.
NO REGULAR SALARY
I think this stretches across to other freelancers aswell. This is the roller coaster ride of this career choice which can be emotional. When it rains sometimes it pours, and sometimes it just spits a few drops from the sky. When work is coming in be grateful and stay busy as hell because you never know when the drought is coming or when the big project you have had lined up gets delayed and you've had to cancel all other jobs for its original scheduling. There have been months where 12,000€ comes in and then some months were 120€ is your best. There are some months where im working 7 days and some months where you are just baffled trying to pitch and score the next gig. Staying active is your only combat to this ride, and it can be emotional and nerve racking, maybe even give you a few grey hairs.
Consistency and stability does not exist in this career, so if you want it, im sorry you are in the wrong profession. There have been days where the money has just piled in like a flood and then some days where you are looking for the money under the refrigerator and questioning yourself, your life direction and you will be screaming with self doubt.
The thing that keeps me pushing through the tough times is staying active, and always trying to invest that time not just chasing the next job but investing the time into my own skills and development as a DP. Hard times pass, but as I said before don't expect that shit to be handed to you on a plate, you need to work your ass off to pull yourself out. If you give up easily, cant handle stress or take disappointments to heart, then keep on walking cause this job is full of disappointments.
RELATIONSHIPS
This is the most common ugly perk I have seen spread across the film industry. When you work 9-5 or just in the typical corporate world, people's stable lives create more predictability. In film this is not the case, well at least it hasn't been in my experience or from many others I have worked with from different cultures and countries.
Choosing this freelance career means that when the work comes, you have to take it. There are times when you can say no to a job, especially the smaller productions, but when you are doing bigger lengthy projects that have amazing door-opening potentials and/or pay then you have to grab those opportunities.
What does this mean? Having to cancel on family, loved-ones and friends, and if you are lucky, maybe you can re-schedule. Its always easy to re-arrange smaller engagements like dinner, drinks or going out for coffee, but for things like birthdays and vacations its much tougher. Especially for myself as I live in Finland and my family is back in Australia.
Since most of you reading are either the only one in your family/friends circle in the film industry or not even in the industry itself, then these outsiders have only experienced the normal everyday life of 9-5 or having the day for duties and nights for sleep. These people will find it extremely difficult to understand why you can never settle on set dates or have to always reschedule or cancel. Ive never been married, but have seen many divorces happen during lengthy projects, so if you intend to engage in marriage - from the advice others I have worked with around the world have told me you really need to find a spouse who is understanding and supportive with the amount of cancelations and rescheduling of family events, or even those times when you need to take that quick side job to get 3000€ because the past month has been dead quiet when it comes to incoming work. Most people just don't get it, they will always say "I don't care we made plans" or "cant you just move the day".
But wait it gets better! When you work on a feature film or some higher end productions. Sometimes phones are not allowed or you could be in remote locations with no access to communication for days on end. Feature films are intensive with 5-7 days a week work, which always span 12+ hours a day and for a month or more. Its rare you get a day off, and when you do you still need to do some work to plan for the next shooting day or go over some plans with other production staff, and most of these tasks just have to be done. Even if you do find some hours to have a real day off, you'll have minimal energy and none of that energy to share with others. Every lengthy production I have been on I have seen divorces and breakups happen.  Your outside relationships with spouses, family or friends are put aside. I believe this is another reason why I think alcoholism, drug abuse, infidelity and divorce are common in the film industry, iv'e seen it happen to actors, producers even art department staff.
We do not live the traditional normal lives majority do, and this will affect those that are close to us. Remember those disappointments I talked about earlier, ask yourself this - are you morally ok that you are going to put those close to you into disappointment not just once but time and time again? If you are OK with that, then climb aboard the film industry train.
IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?
So after reading all this you are probably asking to me "is it worth it?". Being that this is my passion and the love of coming together with a group of unknown people from around the world to create something visually amazing is one hell of an awesome kick for me. But hey this is me! life is about choices and this is the choice I made, and I am satisfied. Its all in the eye of the beholder and if you are ready to sacrifice your relationships, money stability and comfort of routine then it might be just possible this is for you. Of course there are some ways you can manage and minimise some of these negative perks to working in the industry, but once again its all about choices and how far you want to push yourself. I know some DP's who are quite comfortable shooting smaller productions in their own town.
Any film buffs out there that would love to share their stories id be happy for a chat! I hope this opened your eyes to what really lies in my profession, its not just all cool camera gadgets and the glorious behind the scenes videos and photos.

Barking When Left Alone
Tumblr media
Of all the dog's behavioral problems, the dog barking alone is perhaps the most annoying. The constant downloading of Yip, Woofs and moans irritates those who live in closed rooms or need rest. These tightened key holders fit into several profiles. It is important to determine which one or more describe your dog. Bad reading of the dog can cause the problem can not be solved.
1. The genetically susceptible bark Virtually all caves and many small dogs, especially Maltese, Poodles and Miniature Schnauzers, fall into this category. These types of races were pre-programmed to bark at movement or noise within their reach. The sensitive alarm thieves who once alerted the fox farmers in the chicken coop now announce that the phone is ringing, the neighbors are at home, or the elevator has arrived. They must be trained to limit the barking. If you train them to bark on command, you are in control. You can activate or deactivate it in your orders! It's not that you do not want them to bark; They just want them to be appropriate. Find a place or a suitable time when the puppy can bark to your heart's content.
2. The Alpha / Territorial These thieves are often non-domiciled men and / or types of guards. They believe they protect their yard, their home, and the "vast airspace" of intruders such as the postman, a squirrel, a passing dog, or a neighbor. By neutralizing the excessive protective and / or territorial edge of the dog can be removed. The training will align the instinct of genetically protective dogs. Block the dog's view of the property boundary (the curve instead of the fence) and prevent patrolling the front door or porch area to reduce the barking of the homeowner. Watch this type of dog carefully; Do not allow him when he is home. If you can not silence him when he is not there, you can not wait long.

3. The demanding barker This self-confident soul does not want to be alone because pleasure ceases. He stands at the door and asks you to play with him again. The barking (see below) and the attractive toys work well to satisfy the devil's demands, as does the lemongrass bark collar.
4. Bored people do not train Types of sport lanes, dogs and herds were raised at work all day. Unfortunately, many collectors, pointers, setters, collies and others are now being used inadequately, especially in urban areas. These dogs must be busy. Otherwise, the boredom to barking (not to mention chewing, rhythm and ditch). Most require at least two hours of intensive aerobic exercise daily. If you need to stay away for longer (more than six hours), one hour of spiritual fun and physical activity, as well as compulsory games and activities, is mandatory. You must leave a dog at the beginning of the day, gasping, completely overwhelmed and exhausted. If you offer them a breakfast with a filled KongTM or a food donor toy, you can also employ them.
5. The anxious and worried dog Some of these dogs fall into the category of toys and miniature breeds. This group also includes dogs that have moved from house to house offering emergency services. Their stories may include over-cautious care and management, lack of socialization or isolation. Dogs that have never left a garden or apartment have been permanently pulled down on paper and show anxious behavior in a new home environment. These dogs suffer from separation anxiety when left behind, even for a short time. Chewing, barking, pampering the house and digging doors or windowsills are some of the typical answers. Most of these dogs need to be properly socialized with the world around them. Obedience with many compliments creates trust and produces a more stable dog. A dog with a better ability to handle.

Environmental changes minimize the absence of the owner The anxious dog may feel less stressed when alone at home when locked up in a breeding cage, whether it's the aircraft type (molded plastic) or a wire cage with a cover sheet or tablecloth. With less room to worry about, just for the bed and a chew toy, many dogs cuddle and calm down. Warning for dogs with severe anxiety (often a rescue dog / shelter): Some dogs can be shredded in a cage. They will shiver, drool, fight and show extreme escape behavior. In these cases, you should seek advice from a professional dog trainer or animal behavior specialist who is familiar with dog behavioral problems and can customize a dog program that includes short-term medical therapy.
Barking facilities
1. Keep the dog in the quietest part of the house. A dog with behavior problems did not win the "house race". 2. Keep curtains and / or drapes pulled. If you do not have enough window cover, get it. Hang a sheet or blanket through the window. A darker environment has a calming effect on most dogs. In addition, there is no visual incentive to provoke the territorial or bored dog. Curtains shield the sounds outside so that the thieves can alarm. 3. Turn on a radio or TV as white noise. In many households, music, television and radio are broadcast from morning to evening, if someone is at home. Imagine how loud the silence is when everyone is gone and the audio system is off! If you not only mask outside noise but also leave Stereo / TV / Radio on, your presence will be audible. 4. When you go, give the dog a chew toy "only when I'm gone" with your common flavor. This toy must be something spectacular: a sterilized veal bone filled with dog food or cheese (served frozen or chilled), a delicious rawhide bone, knotted with meat or filled KongTM. Give it to the dog when you go. Rub it several times before you leave it. It's not just a detour, but in fact, it's not so bad to be left alone because it's the only time the "most beautiful in the world" shows up!
If you've tried all of the solutions above and still find notes from your neighbors, you'll need to desensitize the dog for your outings with Bark Setups. Configurations take time; The slow pace of incremental progress is a necessary part of the program. Be prepared to spend a long weekend or a long vacation for the program.
Recommended Reading: Online dog trainer certification
First imitate your daily exit routine. Do you usually make up your hair, looking for keys, gloves, etc.? Prepare a sports bag or throw trash? Let the dog think that it is like any other daily game.
Secondly, as you offer him his special farewell toy, make eye contact and tell him in a firm and practical way to keep silent until he comes back. Please, there are no long emotional scenes; Do not ask, do not beg and do not complain about being quiet. This will only serve to charge the situation emotionally and burden the dog even more.
Let go shortly. Just a minute or two to get started. If you wait for a lift, call and go. Go down one floor and up the stairs. Wait 1-2 minutes. If the dog has not barked, come back and congratulate him gently. If you hear him barking, mark the behavior by striking with a solid object, such as a pencil. As a bronze key ring, knock on the door, and start the timing again. Every time the dog barks, he knocks on the door and sets the timer to zero. It may take half an hour for a minute's silence to begin. If you do that, come in and rent. Allow to act 15-30 minutes later and repeat.
The goal, of course, is to be able to stay away longer without having to correct the dog to bark. The timeout has to be set up at small intervals. Set goals (5, 10, 15 minutes), re-enter and congratulate the dog if you stay quiet for the set time. Do not wait for an indefinite hour and correct the dog so that he finally barks. The silence must be praised. The corresponding behavior must be recognized.
Most dogs that can stay still for two hours can usually do this on a working day of 8 to 10 hours. It accumulates up to this first hour or more, which can take several days to complete. Bell problems are rarely resolved in one day.
Bark setups can be cumbersome, but usually work if you take the time to do it properly. Tell your neighbor that you do not neglect your complaints. that you understand your discomfort and take steps to remedy the problem. Very often they let them down a little when they know that their complaints have not fallen on deaf ears.

Carol Getting Married, Or Coming to America
8/14/17
My trip to America in a nutshell: Holly (the cat) hops onto my lap as I sit on the porcelain throne, scrolling through my Facebook news feed.
It's recommended that y'all put Calvin Harris' Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 in the background while reading forward. That album has been giving me life the past month and is somehow emblematic of this post.
Tumblr media
Mona and I at Target. Initially, we tried the headbands on ironically, but then we kept wearing them around Target as we looked at stuff we didn’t need. When we got to the register, we bought them for their sentimental value.
Adhering to the better judgment and insistence of a trusted friend, I took half an Imodium (anti-diarrheal pill) before my 14-hour journey from Tamale to Accra, and booooy was that rough but so, so necessary. I had been running (Ghana speak for recurrent diarrhea) for a week prior. Being a kitty-corner from a toilet/latrine was not just necessary; it was equal parts redemption and self-preservation. And while that plug kept my pride intact on the bus, it nearly made me want to commit seppuku. Accra was the same as usual: foreign to me (as a northerner), expensive, and awkward. Highlight of being in Accra two days before my flight: I got my (seven) cavities taken care of. Lowlight: half of those fillings chipped away or fell out entirely in America. Oh, Ghana.
My flight to Paris was an adventurous one. Without going into too many details, I sort of held up the flight. But only by no more than 5-10 minutes! And it wasn't really my fault!! The flight attendants blew the whole ordeal out of proportion, even going so far as talking smack about me—in my presence—in French. They probably needed to take half a chill pill. We got to our destination on time, and I don't regret what I did. Don't worry—it was neither illegal nor immoral.
Paris to San Francisco was one of my worst experiences to date. I felt restless. My body was tense, my neck was killing me, and I was in the thick of a four-seat row. It didn't help that European airline food is leagues better than what I had been eating lately, and I was losing the fight to reject free brie cheese, butter, and ice cream en route. Lactose intolerance, be damned!
My three week stay in America was split between San Jose and San Francisco, my parents' home and my sister's/BIL's house. I no longer had my apartment in Oakland, and while my friends and former flat-mate were more than willing to let me crash at their place, I felt a little weird about it. They had real jobs and some had real families, and I didn't want to loaf around on netflix all day in front of them... which is what I often did in San Jose. Hours and hours spent catching up to beloved shows and binging on ice cream, cake, chips (party size), and cookies. I gained about 7lbs by the time of the wedding, two days before my return to Ghana. Most of my SJ friends didn't live in the area anymore, and even if they had stayed to reside in the 4-0-8, we had drifted apart so that a lot of what we did together was reminisce. I spent as much of my free time as possible meeting up with old friends in Oakland and San Francisco. For those who have yet to revisit America, here's what's up:
Hawaiian poke bowls are now a thing
There are now many apps to have food delivered to you. Be the recluse you aspire to be!
Boba tea has expanded into the mainstream, something us Asian-Am's have known and drank for years
Kick-boxing-ballet is on the rise
Homelessness has increased significantly in the bay area
You can order your weed online and have it delivered to you via a phone app (in CA, at least)
Coming to America was... weird. It wasn't too much of a culture shock. Maybe because it takes a lot to faze me; maybe because I've gotten some pre-America exposure to department stores and grocery markets in Accra, but having set prices was oddly comforting. No more haggling over a couple Cedis and wondering if I got a fair price or an inflated foreigner price. And the American merchandising of consumer products? Alarming, alienating. I never realized how greatly consumerism and commercialism ruled Americana. Or how courtesy is a real form of currency.
I watched a YouTube video one day that convinced me I needed to go buy, or at least check out, some LUSH products because they were all natural and good for you and better for workers and the environment (1: covert advertising). I went to a LUSH store in San Francisco, and the people were all so nice and accommodating, if not a little too eager to have me sample something (2: everyone is kind of fake-nice in USA, but I know everyone is good people, especially retail workers. I've been there; I've done that). The store smelled divine; the products seemed truly high-quality. And then I looked at the prices. Holy Jesus, Mother of Mercy, and the ineffable Buddha. FUCK. Those prices were eye-gougingly high. But then it is America. And then I converted the costs into Ghana Cedis—something I had to intentionally prevent myself from doing as my vacation continued to preclude a moral quandry at every run to CVS—and I felt like an asshole. I then spent the next hour musing in the small shop to look for the cheapest thing to buy (3: because manners matter in America, and they were all SO nice. I didn't want to be one of those people who actually talked to the workers, stayed forever, and then left without buying anything. This is why I can never work in a book store, no matter how romantic and cool it seems... and how much I want a 10% employee discount). I left the store with a shampoo bar I could use but didn't really need. I won't reveal the cost, but rest assured that for the same price, I could have bought three shampoo bars on Amazon.
And that's another thing: Amazon! The paragon of consumerism in America! I am critical of it all, but I can't deny that I'm in it; they have me, my wallet, and my soul. Disregard my rants as I lather my tresses with my new sea salt LUSH shampoo bar. And you know what? It feels really fuckin' good, and it does voluminize my hair, I think...
Y'know, I feel like something of a celebrity in Ghana. I'm a foreigner and a novelty and most strangers want to be my friend. Why, the kids scream my name—“Deeshini! Deeshini! Deeeeeshini!!”—everywhere I go in the village. And while I didn't have the same A-lister power in America, a lot of people did want to meet me. I felt like the Queen-motherfucking-Bee in a teen movie. It sucked that I couldn't hang out with everyone since conflicting schedules and locale were an issue, but for the folks that I was able to see and spend some time with, I am so grateful and thankful. It meant more to me than I can articulate.
Since I've been gone, my friends got engaged/married, are making strides in the pursuit of their dream careers, and evolving into cooler versions of themselves (and they were already pretty dope creatures). I love all of that. We talked lives, marriages, politics, failed connections, social unrest, self-discovery, and all the minutiae over good beer and better food. That's mostly what I did: enjoy the best food (Thai food, Vietnamese che (desserts), sushi, smoked salmon, burritos, cream donuts, STRAWBERRIES and PEACHES and CHEESE #sighpies ...and PIE. All the pies, yespleasethankyoumuch) with high-quality company and drink my weight in liquor. I was reminded how lucky I was to not have to drink Club beer (aka Bud Light's even less impressive cousin) for another three weeks. Don't get me wrong—Club will do, but why drink Club when you can have a Rasputin? Or a quality IPA?
My sister and Nathan (BIL), bless their hearts, had a few crates of beer available at their wedding. I drank a few Anchor Steams to calm my nerves before my sister-of-the-bride speech. I wasn't drunk, but I got the hiccups anyway. The speech itself was worse than a train-wreck. It was a dumpster fire that somehow rolled down the street. I wish I could have also left the building and escape onto the streets of SF.
...Okay, no, I didn't. But I ended up ugly-crying/ bawling the whole way through... to the point where my sister AND our father told me, 30 seconds in, that I didn't have to finish what I had to say. I wanted to though; I'm no quitter! And especially not on a night that would be remembered for the rest of my sister's life!
Well, I tell you what, neither she nor the other 340-plus guests will forget the night I read my speech—something that should have been one minute but took three instead—through tears, frequent mucus snorting, and awkward pauses into a microphone. By the way, my mess was not only filmed on camera for future generations' sake, it was also live-broadcasted for all the guests on the mezzanine to see since they didn't have ground-floor views. So much for all that expensive make-up. It washed away in three minutes. I didn't think I'd cry. That's the problem. I should have known better. I'll cry at anything, even a drop of a hat if it happened in a way I deem poetic.
It wasn't something I shed a tear over, but seeing family was a huge joy of being back home. Carol's wedding became the impetus for the reunion of my paternal cousins. They hail from all over the world—Paris, Portland, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal, LA, New York. It was pretty cool. Some cousins I had never met before, and for others, it had been at least a decade since we were in the same room. I knew it meant a lot to my dad that several of his siblings made it to the wedding. He hadn't seen some of them in almost two decades. I don't think I would ever want to let that happen with Carol. Reuniting with my maternal cousins was something that I was also fortunate to do. I'm lucky I had cousins to grow up with; I know that's not the case for a lot of people. A lot of them had moved northward, towards Sacramento, as the Bay Area became too expensive to live in. It had been such a long time since I sat down and talked to the few that were in my age range. And on top of that—the baby cousins were no longer babies! Now they were in high school and finishing college, and I wondered to myself where did the years go?
The rest of the wedding banquet was bomb-diggity. There was a photo booth with props. Music was on point (leave it to my BIL to play the theme song to COPS at his wedding). The in-laws are Chinese, so of course we had a Traditional Chinese Ten-Course Meal. Yumsville, population: Diana. I ate until I couldn't eat anymore. Best part was the cake. I even ate other people's uneaten and half-eaten slices left on their tables as they headed home. Want not, waste not—cream and all!
By the end of the night, I was walking barefoot as I could no longer walk in those four inch heels that prevented my dress from dragging more on the floor than it did. My mom has night blindness, and my dad has avoided driving on the freeway for the past 15 years. It was up to me to drive us all and a fellow bridesmaid back to San Jose that night. It was a little nerve-wracking as I had only driven once before while being back, but it all went fine. Maybe driving is one of those things you don't really forget, like riding a bike.
Most of my time in America was spent before the wedding. Really, the whole point was to make sure my ao dai (one of my bridesmaid's dresses; an ao dai is traditional Vietnamese garb for gals) fit. I came back as early as I could to have alterations made in case the measurements I gave my sis didn't work out. I also wanted to help out with pre-wedding prep. While we never did go to the tailor before the wedding due to laziness (it fit, thankfully), I was glad to assist with the flowers and some small tasks.
When I was preparing to leave for America, I just couldn't wait to return to Ghana. I had work to do; a life to get back to with a purpose, but by the end of my stay, I wish I had more time to spend with my parents. They look older, more tired. I'm still in the selfish phase of my life: the unsparing twenties where hedonism is the choice idea, responsibilities feel better suited for my 30's, and I have few qualms about being an ocean away from my ma and dad. Good news is that they're both more or less retired now. Better news is that our relationship, no matter how frigid or awkward, is improving. They spent most of my time in America running around getting the house ready for the wedding. We're not Christians, so the house was renovated and the backyard landscaped to be presentable for the ceremonies—the American one (an officiant... who happened to be my sis' bff and a fellow bridesmaid!) and the Vietnamese/Chinese one (tea ceremony... where the groom's side of the family comes into the house in a procession, dowry-like gifts in hand)—at home. I was humbled by the tea ceremony, with all its intricate formalities and greetings and ancestral acknowledgment. I wondered quietly to myself: “Wow. This is a lot of bowing and citation to this person and that person... and who is that guy? I don't even know who they're talking about, but everyone else seems to. Will any of us second-generation American kids know how to guide each other through another tea ceremony when everyone from the old country has passed?” I'm sure my cousins and I will manage, somehow, but it did make me hyper-aware of how disassociated I feel from my Vietnamese culture sometimes. Not quite American enough for America, and not Vietnamese enough for the Vietnamese... It's sometimes a kind of limbo being the child of immigrants. Just a thought.
I think when everything was all over and everyone could finally breath a sigh of relief, both my parents and I regretted not spending quality time together. I say so because my dad said it indirectly. It's unfortunate, and I understood. I was in the same boat: the only reason I was even back was because of the wedding! My parents... they're old school. They didn't grow up hearing their parents say “I love you.” A roof, plentiful food, and all necessities met (and a few gratuitous material pleasures here and there) meant love. I'm learning more and more about how they communicate all the time, and I'm learning more about their lives too. They didn't like talking about it when I was little. I think it's an immigrant/ refugee thing. I've heard similar situations amongst friends and family. But the older I get, I think the more comfortable they feel about detailing their lives and all the struggles within it. It's the same for myself too. I'm learning more about the way I express myself—feelings, thoughts, friendship, and all. And I'm trying harder to communicate with them. It's humbling to realize how we will always be discovering more facets of ourselves. I can't wait to know what I will know and feel how I will feel at 40. In the meantime, I need to call home more.

Scott Galloway: Colleges open this fall care about money, not trainees
Scott Galloway is a bestselling author and teacher of marketing at NYU Stern.
The following is his current article, republished with consent. It originally ran on his blog, “ No Mercy/ No Malice.”
Galloway says that the insistence of top-tier universities to be open for in-person class this fall is absolutely nothing more than “consensual hallucination” and determination to wrangle as much tuition cash as possible from their students.
This unchecked optimism highlights the self-important nature of academia in addition to universities’ approaches of preying on trainees– specifically worldwide students– as “golden goose.”
Visit Service Insider’s homepage for more stories
Our nation’s superpower is optimism. We buy insane ideas and believe anyone can be anything. We fund more startups, buy more lottery tickets, and transform ourselves more frequently than any country. The belief that our finest days are ahead of us leads to a hunger for risk. We inherited this from individuals willing to leave whatever behind, get on a ship, and build a new life in an odd land. Things would be better– they were optimists.

A sense of resolve, confidence, and optimism has actually led us out of every crisis in the 20 th century. Wars end, and nations rally around a sense of restoring and a merged vision. Recession can be beaten back by customer self-confidence: “Honey, let’s book a cruise and finance a Hyundai.”
America is an upward cycle, pulling the future forward. Optimism is our DNA, our superpower, our nationwide identity.
With COVID-19, optimism is likewise our Achilles heel, and it might have devastating results. People feel it’s time to return to our regular lives. However, and I can show this, COVID-19 doesn’t care about our feelings. We have actually participated in a consensual hallucination with the marketplaces and our leaders that getting back to regular life is something we can make occur on our terms.
Bold, optimistic declarations– American, even.
The mathematics here is easy, and comparable to any product where the consumer is constantly weighing her alternatives and choosing where to spend her cash. The value proposition of college is:
Thanks To Scott Galloway.
C = Certification (the lane you are put in post graduation based upon the brand/school you went to, i.e., a caste system) E = Education (learning and things) Ex = Experience (fall leaves, football video games, getting your heart broken, tossing up)
Schools charging $50,000 each year or more (Brown, NYU) have value propositions that have actually been rendered untenable overnight. The removal of the university experience is similar to SeaWorld without killer whales. Yeah, we get it … free Willy, but I’m not paying $450 to see otters and penguins. We’re not paying $54,000 for Zoom classes.
It’s no mishap the universities that have actually stated they are “open for business” in the fall have much higher average tuition than those that haven’t stated anything or revealed they will be online only. The numbers and hazard are incredible. NYU has 26,000 students. That means we are expecting approximately $400 million in tuition payments to roll in over the next several weeks. What would you say? “We’re uncertain what fall appears like … it’s an excellent year to think about doing something else”? Management at high-tuition universities are sounding eerily familiar to a CEO during a disastrous profits call who, in the face of a stark truth, attempts to paint a positive vision of the firm’s future to keep the stock from crashing.
Courtesy of Scott Galloway.
The killer whales (cash cows) of high-tuition status universities are global trainees. We claim we let them in for diversity. This is BS. International students are the least varied friend in the world. They’re all rich kids who pay full tuition, get tasks at multinational corporations, and often go back to the family service. At NYU, they make up 27% of our student body and most likely half our cash flow, as they are ineligible for financial aid. We have actually a pandemic coupled with an administration committed to the demonization of immigrants, including seriously limiting the prospects of highly proficient college student This suggests the whales may just not show up this fall, leaving us with otters and penguins– a huge fiscal hole.
Courtesy of Scott Galloway.
As in any sector, COVID-19 has yielded some unlikely winners. The Cal State system, who lots of would argue is the genuine jewel of California, has announced they will be online just. This permits them to focus on the tech and training to deliver a better online experience. Cal State, which will graduate 40,000 more trainees than the entire Ivy League this year, is not rendered flaccid by COVID-19, as the experience was never a huge part of the formula. The majority of trainees commute to school, and the denominator is much lower ($ 6,000 in-state tuition). So, their value ratio, in a time of corona, all of a sudden leapfrogs expensive liberal arts, campus-based universities.
On September 1, I’m set up to teach 170 students in a windowless space. After 12 sessions of three hours in the sealed room with 170 people, 50 of them will then disperse back to their 20 native nations for the vacations. If the manufacturers of “Contagion” choose a follow up, I have an idea for their opening scene.
So, thoughtful, talented individuals university administrators– are hard at work determining school setups and protocols to make campus safe. Ok, and what about off-campus? Unless the NYU provost can encourage Mayor de Blasio to restore restriction, there will be an absence of distancing in SoHo this fall.
An x-factor to all of this is a vaccine. The possibility we find and disperse a vaccine in the next 13 weeks is low to none. In sum, the concept of universities opening pre-vaccine is a reflection of our optimism. The problem? COVID-19 is indifferent to our feelings.
No matter enrollments in the fall, with endowments of $4 billion or more, Brown and NYU will be fine. Likely much better than fine, as a culling of the university herd would increase their variety of applicants and return them to the salad days, just better. However, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of universities with a sodium pentothal mixed drink of huge tuition and little endowments that will begin their death march this fall.
Thanks To Scott Galloway.
Universities need to be doing what every other organization whose service model has been threatened by COVID-19 is doing: cutting costs. This week, I spoke to the chair of the advisory board of an all-girls college. Next week I’m arranged to speak to the chancellor of the university that gets more applications than most likely any school on the planet. In both discussions we’ll go over innovation, tech, and how we are all “in this together.” Normally, when I broach the subject of cost cutting, it’s as if I belched. The discussion continues as if they didn’t hear anything.
The prize is massive– a remarkable boost in the number of seats at good schools.
In sum, elite universities will be fine.
