So I'm listening to the pregame episodes of JTP campaign 3. Which is all fun and games until I link it to the fact that I'm working on a book about plant and reptilian/amphibian people, and now I have to try not to accidentally copy any worldbuilding or character stuff. And I've just watched d20's ravening war too, so I'm already trying my best not to assimilate that into my book too.
Why is timing always like this? I love the inspiration but come on.

I really like the concept of "what if the Asl brothers swap parents?" so here is my 2 cents to it:
Ace:
He swaps with Luffy. Obviously that would change his character quite a bit bc his daddy issues regarding Roger are an integral part of his character & how he views the world and himself. He'd still have some issues but well, if you are forced to grow up in a forest full of monsters and mountain badits bc your dad decides to fight the government and dump you with your clinically insane grandpa you'd probably have some too.
Ace has heard a lot of things about the Revolutionaries. The government and nobles would describe them as vicious devils. Some common folk would describe them as delusional.( One small group can't change how the world ticks no matter how hard they try.) Others would describe them as saviours and beacons of hope.
Given his personal experience with corrupt nobles (Gray Terminal fire), Ace understands why Dragon would want to take down the World Government as it stands. So he wouldn't really dwell too much on it and focus on his own ambitions.(Become a famous Pirate). If his father wants to be a Revolutionary then so be it.
(Also he'd definitely remind Garp about it with a smug face whenever the old man brings up joining the Marines.,which never fails to earn him a "fist of love")
Another core difference would be that he probably doesn't try and challenge Whitebeard.
I'm not sure if I remember this one properly but Ace's main reason for going after Whitebeard was that Whitebeard was Roger's Rival and Ace wanted to prove himself as quickly as possible. So if it hadn't been for that I think Ace would have sticked more to exploring the New World, improving his skills and spreading his name. He'd be a lot more laid back and sure he carries a big secret with him but it doesn't fell nearly as much of a burden as it did with Roger.
Naturally Marineford never occurs which would change things up quite a bit.
Sabo:
Sabo swaps with Ace. Sabo is a lot more level headed than Ace and would probably take the fact that Roger is his father a lot better than little Ace. That being said he would still carry certain worries and fears with him for life. What if people find out out about his secret? Would they hate him? Would they leave him?The Marines could show up and execute him any minute now.
I'm not sure whether Ace and Sabo would grow up together since infancy or whether Garp dropped Ace of at Dadans when he was older but either way the two of them would quickly grow fond of each other. Like in canon they only have each other and in a way they can bond over their secret.
Sabo doesn't hate Roger the same way Ace does. Sure he was supposed to be this terrible Pirate but one day he plans to set sail and become a Pirate himself. People would speak and think ill of him anyways he thinks.
I don't want to put him in Ace's position and make him a Whitebeard Pirate bc I doubt Sabo would be as bold as to attack an Emperor unprovoked.
Sabo still sets sail with the goal to be free and explore the world and write a book about it like in canon.
Him and Ace would probably be "rival" pirate captains. Everyone assumes there is some sort of history between them and that they are enemies but in reality it's just two brothers having a pissing contest over who can sink more Marine ships.
Luffy:
Luffy swaps with Sabo. While Ace and Sabo somehow find themselves in a little more favorable position in this Au, Luffy would find himself in a much worse position.
Being forced to wear clothes he doesn't like, restricted meals, being forced to study boring stuff,Luffy would absolutely hate all of this. His parents neglect him and abuse him verbally and emotionally on a daily level so naturally Luffy runs away like Sabo did.
Luffy is loud, eats a lot ,runs around and he loves to explore so the live of a noble would absolutely kill him on the inside.
He goes to the Gray Terminal and meets Ace and Sabo. He follows them around like in canon and when the Porchemy incident happens they finally take him in.
I'm not sure how he gets his df but since Zoan DFs are said to have a will of their own I think the fruit would have found it's way to Luffy with or without Shanks.
The part about Luffy being taken away from his brothers would definitely be different. Luffy is not Sabo. When Sabo got taken Ace trusted that Sabo can take care of himself and that he'll find his way back to them eventually.
But Luffy isn't Sabo.Luffy is their little crybaby brother who still can't protect himself. Who would give up his own live for something as trivial as keeping quite about their stolen treasure stash.
They know Luffy will suffer in High Town. Luffy knows too but he'd gladly trade his freedom for his brother's lives and they hate this.
Luffy would have a tougher time trying to escape then Sabo bc he is younger and clumsier.
Meanwhile Sabo and Ace would desperately try and make plans to free their little brother.
Maybe Dragon's ass actually helps during the fire or they end up forcing themselves to ask Garp but I can't see them leaving Luffy to his fate.
Luffy's pirate journey wouldn't change much though i guess his wanted poster having just "Luffy" means that some people don't view Luffy in the same light.

For the WoL prompt-do the primes
1 2 3 5 7 11 13 17 19
WRONG, 1 IS NOT A PRIME NUMBER
but I shall answer it all the same, be prepared for spoilers up to the 6.1 MSQ!
1 - Why did they pick their first class/job? What about the job they main now?
Bylgrael's first class was Marauder and worked up to Warrior, because she learned to fight from her dad, and he was most skilled with the axe. Her particular style differs slightly from the typical Lominsan axework, favoring more "dirty fighting" like toe stomping, headbutts, elbow strikes, throwing dirt, etc. Once she had the option, she took up the sword n board and strove to be the best paladin she could, because her dream is to be a heroic knight beloved by all.
2 - Does your WoL have a recurring nightmare (or more)? What is it?
Nope, she sleeps quite soundly. She has her worries of course, but nothing that keeps her up at night.
3 - Who do they worry about the most?
I'll stick with in-game NPCs for this, I don't wanna involve my friends characters without consulting them first, so among her personal circle in the Scions, Y'shtola and G'raha. Bylgrael knows Shtola is competent and brilliant, but she's also three times now thrown caution to the wind and ended up in a perilous situation that Byl didn't have the expertise or knowledge to save her from, and that stresses her out in a bad way. Likewise, Raha has up and nearly killed himself for Byl's sake twice over, and that really upsets her because she doesn't want others to put themselves in danger for her sake. She's tough, she can Handle It. She also fusses over the twins, but they've proven themselves more than capable of getting themselves out of trouble.
5 - What is the first impression most people have of them? Is it different when they get to know them?
"Twelve have mercy she's a giant." Bylgrael is tall even by Roegadyn standards, and her fiery red hair makes her stand out in a crowd. At first glance she probably seems pretty intimidating, but once someone has spent any amount of time around her, they're likely to find that she's bubbly and cheerful, smiles often, and prefers to settle things without fighting whenever she can. That said, if they continue to spend time around her, they'll find that their first impression was very much correct.
7 - How have they dealt with losing people?
Poorly. Bylgrael was already used to people dying by the time she was a teenager, comes with being daughter to a bloodthirsty pirate king. She knew people mourned the dead, and she'd seen members of her dad's crew go overboard or get shot, but she hadn't actually had to process grief until Haurchefant. The best she can do is keep smiling, keep being the hero. Don't slow down or let herself wallow in memories of the people that aren't here any more.
11 - What location do they dislike the most?
Gridania. Bylgrael is not a religious woman, and tends to be very blunt with her opinions, and she has nothing kind to say about the Elementals or any government that allows "a bunch of haunted trees" to determine the fate of peoples' lives.
13 - What are their speech patterns like? more formal or informal?
Very formal and polite. Bylgrael is a bit slow and thoughtful with her words, wanting to make herself perfectly clear and leave no room for misunderstanding about what she means. She rarely ever curses either, and stutters when she's flustered or nervous. She's also quite fluent in crass, slang and euphemism riddled pirate speak, but doesn't speak like that if she can help it.
17 - Any allergies?
Nope!
19 - What level of education do they have?
Nothing formal, just some basic homeschooling from her father and his first mate using whatever educational books they could scrounge at markets (or steal). Bylgrael is a strong reader and enjoys books, but she's not very good at math more complex than basic multiplication. Her knowledge tends to be more practical, like "how hard do I have to swing to produce this much force" or "what kind of fish can be found in this part of the world".

Trying to do costume design stuff feat. the first time I've broken out my tablet in a while....
I've been in an awful creative slump for literally like 2 years. I love my ocs, but I haven't been able to write or draw anything I'm happy with for so long. But I'm trying to revisit Vel's world and start from scratch with a lot of world building and plot elements. I've had some ideas and inspiration that I'm actually excited to flesh out and I feel like it makes so much more sense with the characters I have in the story. Idk if it'll go anywhere, but I've been developing these characters for 7+ years and have never felt like they're quite at home in their own world since character dynamics and development has always been more interesting than plot and setting for me. There is a LOT of retconning going on, with characters, backstories, and setting... I just want to have some fun with it and not worry about having a product worth posting or showing to anyone because I feel like that mindset gets me into a rut.
I feel like since it was always, at heart, a pirate adventure story it had to be golden era of piracy/western Europe inspired even though it never made sense in the timeline... I think I'd like to explore Russian historical dress and folklore since I find it way more visually appealing, way more fitting to the character's senses of style, and a closer geographic equivalent to the setting of Skavarren.
I'm also not sure why but the pirate thing feels so off for Vel as a character. She's just not the right character to inhabit that role, but at the same time I love it and I'm really invested in it, and I'm not sure where else I'd go with her. But I want to do them justice as a character and give them a role that fits. What I know about Vel is that she was a ship's surgeon for a while and has her own passion project studying natural sciences, and has used their travels as an opportunity to study. She is a morally grey character, but probably too introverted/self sufficient to be interested in what a life of piracy would have to offer. It would take some external force or plot stuff to make her end up in that scenario, which makes them seem like a passive character being influenced by other stuff and I really hate main characters that have stuff Just Happen to them instead of actively doing things that influence the story. Plus I've retconned a lot of her backstory and family which definitely changes her as a character... But it does feel more in place in the setting instead of the setting being built around the old backstory.
I just!!! Plots don't make sense and that's my fault cause I've written myself into a corner a million times with this story. There are a few set points that I know would happen regardless but everything between them is up in the air. (Also, I have another new character who makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE in the role of badass gay pirate and,,,, I want her to have it ... But I want it to make sense in Vel's timeline and not just be basically the same story with a different name...)
I don't necessarily want to have a set plot that I could theoretically turn into a book/comic or anything, but boy oh boy I want to talk about my ocs so much but I don't have anything to say cause I DON'T KNOW what's canon anymore and what's not ... And I like the idea of someday returning to this with actual time and motivation and making something cool with it. But maybe that'll kill my motivation again because I like exploring my stories and adapting them as I find new interesting concepts.
Man this is hard.
Also I wish I wasn't so out of practice with drawing cause I suddenly want to draw again after so long of not feeling it at all and NOW I have to relearn a bunch of stuff lol I am continuously my own worst nemesis

Greetings- um, I was wondering if I could ask for a Rottmnt match up, please? Only if you have time, of course.
I'm a female, 5'2 of height (thin), glasses, cooper skinned, with short dark brown hair, mainly introverted. I don't use make up and jewelry makes me feel uncomfortable. My favorite colors are red, purple and green.
I adore windy autumn days and listen to a lot of pop and folk music (especially if it has flutes or violins). I love birds, the forest, board games, and I'm pretty curious about antique cultures an spiritual things. I like to think there is more in the origin of objects and people than what we can see...
I also appreciate silence and the space to do my stuff.
On first sight I look kinda serious... maybe stoic, but if I feel comfortable enough then I'm pretty expressive and really passionate about my interests, like art, books, theater and animated films. I could spend hours talking about character development, the performance in a musical, rambling about old mysteries or dancing and singing —knowing well I'm not the best at it, which makes me worry constantly about tiring or upsetting people—. That's why even if I get attached really fast, I ironically stay apart. Doesn't meaning I stop caring, i really do, even if they have hurt me. I would die for someone I appreciate, I can assure that.
I usually enjoy having a low profile (no parties), but secretly love the attention. It's a guilty pleasure, just like puns. I sometimes despised myself for liking it... honestly, I just want people to recognize my efforts. However, I don't really take the leadership of anything unless I'm the last option. My family and friends say I inspire confidence in others, giving wise answers to problems and bringing reflexive thoughts into the matter. Though, i love helping, sometimes it turns exhausting to guide someone. I consider myself patient, is only that I turn short tempered when people don't work nor think about what they say or do, like they actually were looking for problems.
On the bad traits I could say I'm a huge coward. I learn about the world but I fear it and their people. Example: One of my greatest fears is the ocean, though I'm a big fan of pirates.
I tend to be stressed when it comes to my responsibilities. It turn into my way of being an adult, 'cause if I don't stress about it I probably will forget it, and that's bad! Also, I do wish I could say I am tidy, but my room is more of an "order in the chaos" thing.
I'm quite selfish and territorial over my stuff and personal projects and, for the cherry on top, I'm really special with food. There're certain kinds of flavors I can't stand, and for god sake, it includes pizza so... that doesn't give me a lot of friends.
I'm sorry if I write a lot, it's another thing i can't control of myself. Thank you in advance áwà
Hello there, I gave plenty of time to do these kind of ask/matchups. Also the more information you give me typically the longer of a response I can give, so trust me I enjoy the long ask. I can See you with

He understands that you have a fear of the ocean and just alot fears in general but he doesn't mind at all. He just dose his best to support you.
He adores hearing you mumble and mutter about anything. He'll often lift weights near you so he can sit and listen and make conversation.

Fable IV rant:
I'm so pumped up for the 23rd because everything has led me to believe that Fable 4 will be announced this year and the game's existence has been confirmed for a while anyway it's just a matter of time of when will Fable 4 show itself. It's a badly kept secret tbh.
So to those who don't mind a big rant or wish to add on to my rant- here we go!
Can you imagine how good the graphics would be for this game, we've all seen modern games, surely, and they're all bloody fantastic looking. Fable Legends is technically the most recent Fable game despite it being a free to play online game
and that it's cancelled
but it also had a gorgeous look to it all! And the character models did great justice to the concept art and honestly that has my hopes real high because I love the concept art of Fable, specifically from Mike McCarthy, so exaggerated and recognisable- yet in all the games I can confidently say they did not do justice to his character design, specifically for Reaver. Sure, he looks stunning in the third game, but not quite what he looks like in his concept art sadly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But also, since Fable was made in Unreal Engine (I'm pretty sure at least) we've seen examples of what can be done in Unreal Engine now and it's absolutely breath taking!
If you haven't seen here are some examples and they're so life-like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving on from graphics!
Since Playground Games is behind the development of Fable 4, they would be spectacular at an open spaced world, judging from the Forza games.
I always loved the open world feature added to Fable, it made things more adventurous and you could do so many things that weren't at all related to the main quest to progress the story and it was just thrilling to see there were other things going on! I'd love to just have my dog companion running through fields, fighting enemies left and right and finding buried treasure or forgotten chests.
Run into strangers who request aid in something silly or rather serious and it would be up to you with how you go about the quest or if you even accept it to get renown or gold. Cause a massacre in towns and villages, running off with low morality and plentiful loot- oh one could fantasise of this all day.
Story, characters, writing and voices.
Fable has always had a fun environment of fantasy and a rather good story (despite the curse of mundane or pathetic boss fights in which I hope Fable 4 breaks this cycle) but the one thing that's always kept me on my feet in the games is the writing and the characters. It always just tried not to take itself too seriously, throwing in absurd quests that probably requires cheese or a really weird-looking outfit. It always kept my attention rather than just pure edge and seriousness of life or death.
The characters are a given, the writing done for them all is perfect in my eyes, I love hearing the variations of how characters of NPCs interacted (enough so that I even bought two of the Fable books written by Peter David). Despite Fable 3 not being the greatest at it's time, I found myself absolutely enjoy the characters for how they were- I even cried over Walter's death because it genuinely felt like I lost somebody pretty close (RIP Walter🙏). The writing and the chosen voice actors were superb and I'd love more of it.
I hope this time we can receive a full story instead of how Fable 2 and 3 were where plenty of plot points and such were cut out due to time constraints- thanks Microsoft, very cool. I'm still in anguish when listening to the Developer's Diary 3 of Fable 3 hearing lines that were just never said in the final product and it was definitely not just additional lines that weren't required as it seemed to mention entirely different things that weren't in the game; i.e. Reaver talks about his pirates in Bloodstone and how he misses them- in the final product he never mentions it and it's even shown that he's tried to completely bury his pirate past for whatever reason.
The pacing in Fable 3 was rather strange too, it felt like the revolution should've lasted longer.
Another hope of mine is to have choices that aren't so painfully black-and-white because it's very obvious which is the good or bad option to a scenario- personally for me I'd like to be morally grey rather than pure good or pure evil.
They better have kept the mechanic of your actions affecting your appearance too to the point where you grow horns and get cracked magma-like skin or this slight glow and aura around you and this flawless skin. It kind of died down in Fable 3, only looking more tired or have completely black eyes and the good- eh yeah not much I can say for when you're good. Purity and corruption seemed to also vanish in Fable 3 (at least I think) since you couldn't really change prices of the homes you were renting out, unless I've been a big goof who didn't arrange the rent prices in the game because I didn't know how.
Combat
Combat in all the games was rather straight forward, especially in Fable 2 and 3 where everything was just easy to beat or you could get overpowered around the start of the game. I'd hope the combat improves greatly this time and even bring back real consequences to dying instead of immediate revival with some lost experience and a scar. We need more serious consequences to your actions (this can be applied to all decisions rather than just if you die in a battle) even if it's just having to reload the last checkpoint. Makes things more challenging this way.
Another thing is to make boss fights less repetitive and simple- sure I can forgive it if the boss is from around the start but if they had phases you had to keep ontop of and didn't rely on summoning a bajillion other enemies to strike you, I'd be ever so grateful.
And if there's other characters fighting along side you, I'd hope they'd genuinely be helpful and keep up to speed with the player. I'm sure the AI in the past was the problem for this as AI wasn't at its best during that time so characters fighting by you didn't do too much or just did whatever that wasn't helpful. Now though, AI has improved immensely (I mean look at The Last Of Us 2, the AI is👌) and due to this, I'm sure characters would make battles more fun and the characters be more involved with the fight and even story.
Mana should be brought back as well, in Fable 2 and 3 mana just ceased to exist so you could just endlessly and repeatedly use the same spells and it just gave you too much power and the enemies barely stood a chance.
We need challenges people- CHALLENGES!
Medieval times? Yes.
I love Medieval fantasy and as much as I like the Victorian era too, I didn't think it quite suited Fable, as fascinating as it was to see fantasy turn industrial, it kind of took away from the Fable feel that I so crave. If they have indeed brought the game back to medieval times it means more creatures and enemies are back rather than driven away or limited to the same handful of enemies.
We can all also agree the guns were overpowered, though I did like receiving the Red Dragon late in Fable 2 to absolutely mow down enemies, it was satisfying to say the least. However, guns were far too powerful for the game, so I demand the bows and crossbows back thank you very much- or even throwing knives- I'll take what I'm given.
I'd love to see more of the natural landscape rather than towns or buildings that took over once entirely natural areas (Millfields/Bowerlake). However, I won't object to ruins of old buildings taken over by nature.
Skeptical with Playground Games? Don't be.
Are you worried that Playground Games wouldn't do justice to Fable since it's not Lionhead Studios? Don't be, it's been noted that Playground Games has hired several ex-lionhead workers and plenty other skillful workers to ensure we get the best product. I have high hopes and expectations for Fable 4 even if it's developed under a different studio, I've seen great things from them and I will believe they'll deliver us only the best.
Side note to all this
I will crash and burn if I don't see a crumb of Reaver or Jack of Blades in Fable 4- I don't know how true any rumours are of Fable 4 with time travelling and Jack returning, but we'll just have to see. Reaver still remains as my absolute favourite character of all time and I'd love to see more of him, even see him before he was 'Reaver'.
Jack too, more of his lore is stated elsewhere rather than in the game itself and I'd love to see it all be brought into light and really expand on his lore and make it known- rather than have ever-loving Fable fans like me dig around for these rather delicious bits of canon information.
That's my big rant, feel free to share your thoughts and what you'd look forward to!
Have some accidental art leaks from a Playground Game concept artist- believed to be for Fable 4👀

Random fun fact time! Ft. OCs! (Repost because I added more/ edited a lot of stuff)
Avery -
- Sneezes like a kitten, and most of the time she accidentally uses her fire breathe when she sneezes, so watch out
- Sleeps on a rock
- Is made uncomfortable by actual dragons, it's just... too weird for her...
- Has a strange and inexplicable extreme fear of eels
Tumblr media
- Reacts to fear by singing/humming/speaking very loudly, and also by running and screaming (basically, how markilpler acts when playing horror games? yeah that)
- At least once a week her dad has to help her brush through her hair, he says they should get it cut but she absolutely refuses
- Owns a few pairs of gloves- most of which look nearly identical. Some are for different days, some pairs are for bedtime, and some are for special occasions, but she also has some different types and styles of gloves for different events
- Loves the holidays, dislikes the weather that comes with it
- Absolutely hates people touching/messing with her tail, even if it's by accident she gets kinda mad. That's hers- don't touch it. (Emma's the only exception to this simply because it can't be avoided- although Emma does try to touch it as little as possible)
- Slightly allergic to pollen
- She has a clicking-like purr
- If you scratch under her chin she'll purr and relax, but if scratch a certain spot on her neck she'll sleepily fall over
Tumblr media
- Adopted as an egg and raised by her human father and fairy mother
- Has a Scottish accent
- Works as a Glazier (glass blower) and makes potion bottles, also helps with making the potions, and occasionally costumer service and boring stuff like stocking/inventory
Emma -
- Plays with hoodie strings and/or hair when upset or nervous (it happens often, her hoodie strings are sorta worn out)
- She's a big fan of animals! Especially bears, puppies, and unicorns, she thinks they're adorable! When she was younger she used to like dragons quite a bit too
- She's a protective friend and big sister, and she's a little over protective over people she cares about
- Tends to read into things; if your tone or demeanor is slightly different she begins worrying that something's wrong or that she did something. She also tends to believe that no one actually wants to be her friend or wants to be nice to her, but that they're only being nice because they're afraid of her or pity her.
- LOVES HUGS!!! Absolutely loves them, hugging other giants, hugging people smaller than her, getting hugs, giving hugs, she loves hugs
- Once accidentally ate a fake candy cane decoration, off someone's front lawn, because she thought it was real gigantic candy, left out for giants (she was like four, so it made sense to her then, but she still gets made fun for it a bit by her family)
- Loves snow and winter
- Her favorite color is probably blue
- Is surprisingly good at sneaking up on people, for someone 30ft tall she's quiter than most borrowers
- Is the second oldest of five kids, her older brother Rory is 23, her younger brother Richard is 15, and her youngest sisters Aroura and Tiana are 6 and 8, and they're all pretty close
- Her dad is a size shifter, and so are Richard and Tiana, the rest of the family are giants
- She's ambidextrous
- Very cautious of her surroundings
- Hates surprises/being scared
- Bi-romantic and ace
Sofia -
- Can write without looking at what she's doing
- Only wears slip on shoes or shoes with Velcro/zippers, she never learned how to tie them, she couldn't figure out what to do with her head or look at what she was doing
- She's an artist! She likes to paint!
- Has a hard time saying "no," so when she says it, she means it
- Hates surprises and people sneaking up on her
- Has a pet python named Albert
- Probably the only person on the planet who has worse anxiety than Emma
- Don't call her "Soph" or "Sophie," and she gets mildly annoyed when her name is misspelled
- Typically uses right arm to carry head and left hand for everything else
- Has a weird sense of humor
- Has a million stuffed animals, has like 20 on her bed, but Rupert the blue bunny is her favorite
- She has an enchanted scarf that allows her to wear her head when needed, she doesn't usually use it because she's not used to it & it gives her anxiety (she's scared of the scarf falling off/being taken off unexpectedly) but she has it and uses it on occasion, mostly at home
- She doesn't let anyone else hold her head, it seriously freaks her out, her dad is the only exception, but Avery held her once for a group photo (her body took the picture)
-She loves singing and has a soft beautiful voice but is too shy to sing around anyone 🎶
- She was bullied when she was younger and doesn't like to talk about it, she already gets emotional easily and those memories hurt

- Doesn't go out of her comfort zone, she only does stuff when Avery basically forces her to
- She really likes Emma, but is also sorta scared of her sometimes, she's just scared of people and being looked at, so she can be a little overwhelming without meaning to be, it's nothing personal and she knows Emma wouldn't hurt a fly, she's just scared of people and sometimes Emma is a lot of person
- Doesn't want Emma to hold her (Emma respects it, although sometimes they work it out to where Emma can give her a gentle hug)

- She has a baby sister, Brook
- She's odd and can be off putting unless you know her pretty well, then her weirdness is sort of endearing

Unbound part three - a winged!Killian fic
This fic keeps fighting me.
-----------
Killian didn't see Emma again that morning. When he stopped to pick up his usual coffee order, Granny had tersely informed him Emma had already picked hers up and headed to the station.
Since she obviously didn't want to talk about it, Killian simply accepted the coffees for himself and Belle, then impulsively bought a sprinkle donut for the librarian, and headed off to join her for research.
Belle was good company and, given time, Killian wondered if they could actually become friends. Her smile was genuine when she saw the donut. "Ugh, I'm definitely going to need the sugar today," she sighed.
She'd unearthed a set of dusty tomes that weren't in English, and they were attempting to painstakingly translating the text. It wasn't going well.
And Killian found he couldn't concentrate. The letters, which were frustratingly similar to Greek but with entirely different meanings, and Killian's brain was refusing to make any connections. Finally, he slammed the book shut, raising a cloud of dust.
Belle raised an eyebrow. "You, too?" She shut her book with less force, but no less dust.
Killian rubbed his eyes. "I'm sorry, Love...I'm afraid I just can't concentrate today."
"Is everything all right?" Belle asked. Then quickly added, "Sorry, it's probably none of my business."
Killian hesitated. It would be nice, having a friend to talk things through with. "I've upset Emma," he sighed.
Belle took a slow sip of her coffee, which had long gone cold. "Oh?" she prodded gently.
"She asked me if I would leave my wings unbound. I refused, and she left. It's important to her, for some reason, but I...I can't do it."
Belle set down her coffee cup. "Why do you bind them?" She asked. "I've often wondered."
Killian slid his cup back and forth between hand and hook, wondering how much to tell Belle. She'd already been hurt by her husband's actions; he didn't want to harm her further. He decided to keep it simple. "My wing isn't whole. It's become a source of derision and pity and it's... it was too painful to bear."
"And you're worried that you'll open yourself to all that pain again," Belle realized.
"Aye," Killian said softly.
"So...after all this time, you still don't trust us."
Her words were like a slap. Was that why Emma wanted this? And why she was so upset? Did she think he didn't trust anyone? Her family, friends, perhaps not even Emma herself?
Did he trust them?
He trusted Emma. Completely. But he wasn't extending that same trust to friends and family.
He tried to imagine Snow or Belle treating him like he was a broken thing, or David cruelly calling him half a man.
He couldn't. The attitudes seemed so utterly foreign to them. They'd accepted him as a one-handed pirate; why should this be any different.
Killian stood. "Thank you, Love, you've given me quite a bit to think about."
Maybe it was time he tried something new...
---------
Apologies for the lack of Emma; I felt this was something he needed to hear from someone unbiased.

Two witches, enemies and in opposite orders, decide to enter a deadly alliance to take out their common enemy. This book promises a twisted cat-and-mouse game similar to Killing Eve, and an stunning Jamaican inspired fantasy world.
I was looking forward to witches wanting revenge and working together while still being enemies, but unfortunately this is not really what we get and for that, this book was disappointing.
This book is amazing with its Jamaican culture, diversity, and representation. A lot of reviews speak about how they struggled with the language used and how much information is shelled out in the beginning. Once the book told me it was patwah, I googled and found a really helpful site that defined words I was unsure of. However, the context clues are there, and if they weren't, I found often that within a few pages it would be explained. If its the language or unfamiliar words you struggle with, I encourage you to press on and continue.
My biggest disappointment is that this in no way felt like am alliance. They hardly don't even talk or see each other which is frustrating because I would have LOVED to see two enemies slowly and begrudgingly respect each other, even be friendly, so the betrayals would hurt all the more. There are betrayals but it really has no impact which is a shame. In fact, for this boasting two witches joining an alliance, it really falls to a man spending all the time with either of them.
I don't quite understand the magic system. There's channeling through gold and that can do a lot of things, and it requires a certain amount to do certain things but it's not clear. There's also magic without channeling through gold that is inherited through death and family trees and birth order perhaps? It's a shame because if I could understand it, I'd probably be able to follow things a bit easier. There's a throwaway comment Ira makes about working together which is funny because both can't seem to stop judging Orders and see people.
There's two main character POVs we follow. Ira and Jazmyne. Ira is, in my opinion, the most annoying of the two. She makes a lot of stupid choices and I found her often nearly unlikable and just screams I'm incredibly special. Her chapters which include her learning of using gold would be interesting but they're not, instead they feel too long. The budding attraction with Kirdan doesn't even really make sense because they have no chemistry. Jazmyne, on the other hand, is far more likeable and I actually enjoyed most of her chapters. However, near the end, she seems to act completely different. Do I think she went too far? Maybe not. But it feels shocking that one of her closest friends is so eager to throw her away so quickly.
For a book that's so slow, in fact this "alliance" doesn't happen until almost 350 pages in, I found that this book is also too busy. Not only are we dealing with different Orders hating each other, there's a rebel group called the Nameless, another rebel group called The Jade Guild, a pirate army, a Yielding to worry about, the actual alliance plot, a Find The Magic Items search quest, and two other whole islands of people to also worry about? It's a lot for one book!
I honestly found the whole sneaking around and about by the characters terribly done. Some things also didn't seem very smart either. Why is there a big camp of enemy people being trained in weapons and such with almost no to absolutely terrible supervision???? Why are the most elite guard really bad at their jobs??? Why would you put the one person who has proper ties to the throne that the enemy would love deeply in a camp with her own people??? I just had a lot of moments where I was like: hmmm.
I wish there was a map too.
This is an interesting debut for sure and I loved the representation, but unfortunately this didn't hit the mark for me.
