Looking at the costumes at The House of the Dragon, I can't help but imagine all the gorgeous costumes we could have at game of thrones.
Just imagine hotd team creating Braavosi and Arya's costumes instead of Michelle Clapton giving her one outfit per three seasons.

Thinking about it I think one of the most OOC aspects of Arya in Game of Thrones was how military soldier-esque Arya seemed to be.  She was always straightbacked and immaculately put together when she returned to Winterfell, and of course all she did was become some lackey, similar to a run of the mill soldier.  But to me that seems OOC for Arya.  I do expect her to gain confidence in the books, and she is learning about adaptation, so she’s learning how to dress and look during certain roles she may have to play in every day life, but what we saw of Arya’s looks in S7 and S8 was just too straightlaced in appearance for me, despite still not looking conventional.  Like when I picture Arya, even when I’m picturing future Arya, who has access to regular baths and servants and nice clothing in a variety of styles again, I still don’t picture her like how Arya was depicted, especially in her down time when she wouldn’t be pretending to be anybody by herself.  I always pictured Arya as still having wild hair, for one, and not being so stiff backed all the time, and no matter what she’d wear in her down time, I’d completely expect it from being immaculate.  Not dirty per se, but not pristine and soldier-esque either.  It’s hard to explain.  But this is one of the reasons why I absolutely hated Arya’s aesthetic in the show, especially in the later seasons, besides the fact that Arya had pretty much the same costume for two seasons (even though she already spent 4 seasons in just one costume earlier in the show), when the other female characters, especially the more “feminine” ones were allowed a new outfit every episode or at the very least, every other episode.  IDK in general I absolutely detested every single costume Arya was put it.  It was apparent that Michelle Clapton hated to dress Maisie as Arya.  And it’s apparent that D&D never understood Arya as a character, considering Arya was already OOC and butchered in the pilot episode.

The more I read about GOT and the show runners and costume designer, the more I realize how absurd and petty their treatment of Arya and Maisie was.
Arya only has to pretend she's a boy for 1 book but was dressed like one for much longer. The length of time Maisie was required to bind herself to look flat chested was insane and she was rightfully unhappy with it. Her other siblings were allowed to grow and look older as the years passed and the actors aged but the show runners actively took steps to make Arya look and dress like a boy unnecessarily.
In the books, Arya is clearly an extrovert. We see that even after everything she has gone through, she tries to make friends and a pack wherever she goes. Pack means everything to Arya. But what did we get in the show? They made her a loner that couldn't even be around her family or attend a feast in her honor. After killing the Night King and saving mankind, she only received a toast that she wasn't even around for. And Maisie even commented in an interview that "Arya is always bloody alone." The writers constantly isolated Arya away from her family, her pack. The pack survives quote is heavily featured in Arya's POV in the books and hers alone. And the writers even took that from her.
Being a Stark and Northerner- Arya is the only Stark child with Stark features. She follows the ways of the North long after she left it. She's still connected to her direwolf after years apart. The Old Gods speak to her to remind her who she is. No matter where Arya goes, she's unable to forget who she is and where she comes from. On the show though, the costume designer said she wasn't a Stark anymore and that's why she didn't have any Stark sigils or even the heavy furs her siblings got. Non Stark characters got furs but Arya didn't deserve to be warm in the North. The show runners cut Arya's ties to her name, family, and home just to because they decided that Arya was going to be someone else. Arya Stark, the character that has identity as one of her major themes and the fact that she can never be anyone but Arya Stark was just going to go off and be someone else.
A fucking change of clothes. When other characters had multiple outfits in a single episode, Arya wore the same one in every episode. Even after the battle against the NK and she killed him, they didn't give a different style of clothes to wear. How fucking shitty is that? No wonder Maisie hated Arya's clothes. Arya was a princess of the North, the NK slayer, savior of mankind and the costume designer couldn't take time to give her something nicer to wear? And before anyone starts, in the books Arya wears dresses without a problem. As soon as she had to stop pretending to be a boy, she wore dresses without issue.
I know the show runners, writers, and costume designer did even more stuff to Arya but what I wrote about was currently on my mind. It's just when you think and write all that shit out, you can see how it's just is so blatantly ridiculous, childish, and just a completely asshole move by the show.
People don't understand why so many Arya stans were unhappy with the show but I have to ask, what did we have to be happy about? Arya is the only character in the books with POV in every chapter, the most POV for a female character, and third overall. She's fucking important in the books. She's all over the books. She's in Essos and people are willing to die for her and have died for her in the North. She's being searched for in the RL. She's a powerful skin changer, second to Bran, and with no training.
It's hammered to us in the books that Arya has never, can never, and will never be able to give up being Arya Stark of Winterfell of the North. What did the show give us? She's done being Arya Stark and going to be someone else now.

M*chele Cl*pton just had to put Dany in black leather for the last episode. Like, that’s a thing she did. She put Dany in shiny black leather and some questionable ass braids because she was really going for the villiain aesthetic. Really trying to make it pop. Like we weren’t being smacked over the head by the stupidity of D&D’s bad Got porno enough.  Meanwhile she gives us a ten-page-fucking-essay on the symbolism of Sansa’s dress, the thing we saw for ten seconds max and couldn’t care less about, and yet she can’t even choose something more meaningful for Dany to wear. Oh yeah, black leather ‘cause she’s baaaaaaaaaad now. I’m so smart. *chortle, chortle* We’ve literally been screaming for years for Dany to wear her house colors and god fucking forbid, a crown, and what we get is shiny ass black leather that’s as tacky as Batnipples were, and alien ass braids. I swear to god the did Dany dirty in so many ways that Imma bout to just start a riot on principle.

Oh could you please elaborate on why you didn't like Sansa's Black Raven dress? I thought It was so gorgeous lol, even If It didn't seem medieval
Sure!
Well I didn't like the feathers at all, which is kind of the focal point of the dress so not a good start. They were not pretty, and gave her this weird silhouette that we hadn't seen on the show before. Heavy shoulders was not a medieval thing and in general doesn't look good. Plus, weird that she got this dress in like a few hours and probably killed a bunch of birds for it. It also felt unearned. This was supposed to be dark!Sansa, Alayne Stone of they weren't such cowards, who would train with Littlefinger and go down a darker path. Instead, a few eps later she's in Winterfell and being abused so that she can stay the perfect little princess with very little depth.
Then there was the skirt. I know you mentioned that it wasn't historically accurate, but it really bugged me. They suddenly gave her an empire waist, again which we had never seen before, which would be fine cause some medieval dresses looked like that, but they didn't commit with some fur or a lining of some kind to highlight that waist. And they cinch it like you would on the real thing so it sort of just sat on her body. And the actual material was gross. It was the material she was wearing in season 1, very basic, scratchy, threadbare and lifeless. They did not commit to the bastard thing and give her worse clothes on purpose, so why were we back to the colourless fabric only smallfolk would wear, that I hated even in season 1, for her supposedly badass transformation dress?
And finally, the necklace. The goddamn necklace. Once again, if Arya has anything, Sansa has to have it too. God forbid Arya gets anything sacred in this show. The entire concept of the necklace is crass, insulting, not well thought-out and the actual thing does not actually look good here. It looks cheap. Also, Sansa doesn't even know about Needle, so why would she think to ask someone to make this? (There is no way she made it herself) Needle is Arya's thing, it means everything to her, and it was disgusting of Clapton and D&D to cheapen it make Arya and her story less special by insisting Sansa get "HeR oWn NeEdLe" when it had nothing to do with her. I will never be ok with this thing that became more prominent in the show than the actual Needle. It was undeserved, unfair and downright ridiculous.
If you guys like it that's totally cool. This might have been inoffensive to me if not for the awful story implications. But yeah, overall another miss for me.

chuckling cause while some people are writing long think pieces about michele clapton's logic and symbolism in her wardrobe choices, Dany stans know it's all bullshit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ *just came out of a worm hole of reading an anti post breaking down clapton's comments about Daenerys' clothes and how 'she was trying to tell us all along!' 🙄🙄🙄
All of her outfits are garbage. The woman said that Arya Stark is no longer a Stark....... miss me with that bullshit.

I think the worst thing about the Game of Thrones costumes is the monochromism of it all. The costumes are so dull, color-wise. An okay outfit is ruined for me by the dullness of the color palette. Fantasy is meant to be lush and rich, full of color, and that’s a huge part of George’s world. Where are the Tyrells’ emerald greens? Where are Cersei’s crimsons and scarlets? Where is Roose’s pink cloak or Ramsay’s garnet earring? Where are the royal blues, the riotous violets? Where’s the chartreuse and the turquoise, the aquamarine and orange? Where is the maroon offset by mustard, the chequey patterns? Where are the velvets, the silks, the fringes and tassels, the ruffles, the SPARKLES??

Hi, Fedon! You’re an historian, right? Are you well-versed in the history of fashion? I’m asking because I wanted to know your opinions and headcanons about asoiaf’s fashion. How do you imagine it? Were you satisfied with the show’s dresses and gowns? Would you have changed anything? What about the hairstyles?
Hi there!
O dear! I'm absolutely and completely rubbish at fashion even the fashion of my own time!
I look at clothes and all I think is : I like them or I don't like them. 😂
I'm not the right person to ask. You could try and ask @trinuviel. My fields are definitely not the history of fashion.
I can say only a few things. I didn't care for the hairstyle in season 1, the wigs were too 18th century for me, but the clothes were O.k. Because they had wide sleeves and lots of cloth. In the Middle Ages the rich and upper class people were dressing in masses of cloth, because it was expensive and that way you could show your wealth. The Starks clad in fur also made sense although the furs were too rugged and not exquisite enough. Give me some ermine or other striking furs (not real obviously)!
The whole tight sleeves, black aesthetics Michelle Clapton went for in the last seasons was not only boring but it also makes no sense. No one in the Middle ages with even a little money would have worn tight sleeves. First of all they didn't have stretch cloth, and second it would look cheap to people from the middle ages. Would Queen Cersei be so poor that she couldn't afford wide sleeves? And dyes?
I liked the dresses in season 3 and four. They looked like rich embroidered cloth and they were colourful with coats of arms and all that. It makes sense to have dresses like that, embroidered or brocade. That shows effort and money.
I also liked Sansa's self made dress in season 6, a dark green velvety cloth with embroidery. That rang true to me.
As for changing anything? I would definitely have not engaged Michelle Clapton...
Sry, not sry. Dyes were expensive. Give the aristocracy some colour. I hated season 7 and 8 dresses.
But this is just my opinion and general ideas. I'm really neither an expert nor even an enthusiast!
Thanks for the ask!

Who here dislikes Michele Clapton? I lost all respect for her when she went the way of the cliche and did White=good, Black=bad, White with red accents=foreshadowing blood to be spilled, with Dany. Besides, I feel that the clothes she designed had become exceedingly lackluster over the seasons, only so many outfits actually worked out. Take Missandei’s clothes in s8 for example. That shit was henious. And Dany didn’t even get true Targ colors, except for that off-red dress. And then she was wearing stereotypical black leather when she went ‘mad’. It was all just so...sloppy, really.
