Hey everybody so I decided to do some fan art and some other art things I wanted to do, And the original artist will be tagged under the art that i've done of their characters or their Virgil or their rainbow.
So I hope you guys enjoy.
Nightmare applejack, and nightmare big Mac and apple bloom.
Tumblr media
This is fan art for @janegumball, I like her nightmare mlp versions, So when she said at the end of her video to make a nightmare version of big mac and apple bloom and that would be helping M.A.J out, So that's what I did, And I think they look really great, Also by the way another thing too @janegumball say Is that I really like stickers, and your stickers are so cool
Here's a blanket so you can sleep comfortable, my friend.
Tumblr media
art for @galactikburzt, I like their Rainbow core and Virgil, But ever since they posted their Rainbow sleeping I had this idea for a while of drawing my Rainbow with his, Also because that guy needs a blanket, I just think it's really adorable, also all Rainbow cores may be sexy and look very chill, but you don't know what they could actually be behind the curtains.
I present to you your prosthetic leg sir.
Tumblr media
art for @shrimperini, who I also follow an instagram, Ever since I saw the teaser for their Virgil, I was really excited, I just couldn't wait for it to come out and it felt like it took forever, but now that he is released into the world , I decide to do my first drawing and yes V.B looks like his clone, to be honest, V.B would look like a Virgil clone, in their normal core form, But instead Of a circle in the centre of the 70s Aperture logo it would be a love heart instead, I don't know why but I just really like it.
fun fact: my first core eye I think was similar to wheatley's once, But I decided to change it up a bit, It's a long story.
Hey fellas, what's going on?
Tumblr media
art for @unmberonesnarkfan and @genericdragon.
These guys are one of my favorite artists, I decided to draw their Virgil's because I really like them, and they are one of my favourite Virgil's, So do ask if you wanna know who else has my favorite Virgil's, I wish I could draw them but sometimes I don't know if i'm allowed to post it or not with or without permission, I am trying my best on Tumblr, I'm just not the best at it, Anyways ever since I first saw their art, I really liked it, and I'm a really big fan of them, I am friends with one of them, but the other, we were once friends but I do not want get into too much detail with that, (For private reasons)
That's all I have to say now, Have a lovely night or day, depending wherever you are in the world.
byyyyyyyyyeeee ^w•
p.s You have my permission to draw my Virgil, Rainbow/James and V.B, and whoever else you want to draw, that I have on my profile, but I don't care if you guys use my older art since I haven't posted any of the other portal characters, hopefully it will be soon.

ooo that's a trio i rarely see! very cool. i also found rift in your toyhouse and they're very pretty! all of the design previews in the family tree looked really nice actually :0 do you have a family dynamic in mind yet, besides what you mentioned already? them being half siblings sounds interesting (also mood with the pony mode, it's been Years yet i still think about mlp. . .)
I am sorry for how long it took me to get to this, I kind of had no ideas on what to say oops xd
Ahh thanks! I try to have different ships across all my next gen verses & since this verse, the Amverse, is made of polyamorous ships I ended up with this trio ^^ Yeah, I love all the designs I put into the family quite a lot. Shoutout to awesome designers in the MLP space <2
Since you mentioned it (and I was wanting to share anyways) here's said family tree :3
Tumblr media
[Icon / headshot base by Aesthetic-static DA] From left to right we have! Top row: [HC designs] - Cheerilee [She/they] - Party Favour [He/they] - Rarity [She/her] - AppleJack [she/they/any] Bottom row: - Sunny Social [She/her • Sun/shine 2in1] - Vintage Acclaim [She/her • pop/star 2in1 • +] - Bubblegum 'Curio' Flair [she/they/it/X+] - Wistful Mellow [He/him] - Rift [she/they/it]. (Vintage is a DTA design I don't own yet but her character stands no matter what; even if her design ends up changing. Links are to their toyhouse profiles.)
Onto family dynamics stuff! It might be a little disorganised, sorry about that. Under a read more because oops somehow it is very long lol
Okay so! AJ & Rarity are divorced but they're still very good friends and care a lot for each other. For this reason, as well as the split custody of Rift, AJ is like an Aunt/Uncle/Bibi to all the other kids. They would come over every so often, this actually increased once AJ and their new partners (Tempest & Rutherford) had kids of their own. Both families being raised pretty closely together, the kids very much like considering each other to be like cousins.
Party favour is mostly the stay at home dad. Since his job is much more casual and has a looser schedule, he has the most time to spend with the kids at home. He loves it and wouldn't trade it for the world; spending time with his kids is the light of his life. He's forever grateful to be at a point where he's healed enough to have such a wonderful family.
Cheerilee still works as a teacher and therefore is home the least, though she does have the clearest cut schedule of when she'll be home. Though, while they were young and went to her school she still ended up seeing them a fair bit.
Rarity has the most unpredictable schedule. Though at least if need be she can work from home; since she has a sewing studio set up there. She makes her best effort to get home as early as possible but it isn't always possible, customers can be unexpected and she does occasionally lose track of time. Her family are always there to make sure she doesn't work herself to hard though.
Rift does sometimes feel a little awkward when she's with the RariCheerFavour family, always has a niggling sense of being out of place. Seeing as AJ has primary custody and it spends the most time with that side of her family. Though that's less to do with anything anyone has actually said or done, or ever thought, and more to do with being pretty self-conscious. It's the kind of pony who can't help but internalise what other say about them, the good and the bad. She loves all of her siblings on both sides of the family though, despite everything she would do anything to make them happy.
Rift, as mentioned previously, is the closest to Curio out of all of them. At first glance you wouldn't think they would get along, with how outspoken and bold Curio is versus how gentle and inhibited Rift is. In reality Curio helps Rift to feel more like herself, less need to hide and aspects of itself that might be considered unpleasant or weird. Plus Curio won't stand for anyone saying a single bad thing about Rift, or any of their family for that matter. They also share similar experiences of being on the social fringes, of being the 'weird kids'. They're also pretty good at teaching X to manage aspects of Xs more impulsive nature; all in all they're good for each other. Plus they have a shared love of poetry; Rift being one of the few that Curio will consistently show its pieces too.
The eldest of the family is of course Sunny Social. She was actually born to Cheerilee & Party before they started dating Rarity, she's actually pretty close in age to Rift. Sun works as a personal stylist out of / in conjunction with Rarity's boutique; she's very much a charismatic and social pony. Sun ended up pretty close with Rarity because they share interests; she loved watching her working and going to work with her. Sun loves playing 'dress-up' with shines younger siblings; to the extent they let sun at least. She's generally pretty easy going and casual so she gets along well with all her siblings, including Rift.
Sunny probably gets along best with Vintage, who is the next oldest in the family. That's because Vintage is also kind of into fashion, or at least values / trusts her sister's opinion on it. Pop was always the one who enjoyed letting Sunny dress star up the most. She was also one of the first ponies that Sunny came out to, Vintage's perceptiveness helping star to notice that something was up with her sibling.
Sunny isn't as close with her 2 younger siblings but she still very much gets along with them both. Sun doesn't share generally share interest with Curio but the 2 of them do still have a bond forged on a mutual secret indulgence of trashy TV; she lovings hearing all of Xs opinions of it while also using it to help unwind shines mind.
Sunny and Mellow are both very social and friendly so they get along easily. Plus, Mellow lets her style him in exchange for doing stuff he wants; such as being taken to the mall / arcade or gaming with him.
Vintage is probably the most ambitious of the family, pop certainly has dreams of making it big someday. At least, she thought she did? Her family has always been more than supportive of her dreams and ambitions; Rarity even introducing her to famous DJ Vinyl Scratch, whom pop now works for. Though in that journey stars realised that maybe being a personal assistant is actually more her speed after all. It turns out it something she's incredibly good at, designed for her almost. Luckily she has ponies she can turn to for advice on what to do.
She adores her younger brother, Mellow. He's always hyping her up and is more than willing to listen to her sets and give her feedback, plus he enjoys the stories from her work. He might not have much life experience but he's the one stars been talking to about her current indecision, he let her know that's okay to not know what. Pop also plans on talking with her parents but will always appreciate his help.
Vintage also has a pretty good relationship with Curio, they have a friendly competitive vibe between them. There's a lot of friendly ribbing and teasing that occurs; they definitely have the strongest sibling rivalry in the family. Though it's all in good nature; they definitely have each others backs when need be.
Curio loves its family, even if X does end up causing them some unintentional trouble. They're very much the kind of teen that requires phone calls to parents for smart mouthing at staff or organising protests of stupid rules. It's usually Party whose relegated to picking her up and dealing with the school, being the stay at home dad. He is pretty much always on Xs side, even if he might disagree with the ways it expresses its opinions sometimes.
Curio is a very curious pony, they love learning about everything and gathering new information. It's one of the bonds that ties them close to Xs Ma; no matter how much she's been working Cheeri is always happy to set aside some times to teach x about something new. Her love of learning is very much encouraged by her ma.
Curio is extremely protective of its younger brother, she's not afraid to stand up to anyone who might be causing him problems. She knows he's pretty impressionable and agreeable, she just worries someone will end up hurting him because of it.
Curio does in a lot of ways feel like they don't fit in with their family but also knows that they still love and accept X in spite of the differences.
Mellow is very much a dads boy; he thinks the words of his dad and gets along with him best out of his entire family. Sometimes he does wish he had a brother but he still loves his older sisters very much; even if they're a little overprotective of him. He loves getting them to participate in his hobbies or interests and is more than willing to do favours or what they want in return. He's the hype-man of the family, willing to offer unconditional support and cheer no matter what endeavours any of them are working on.
Thinks Rift is really cool and wishes they were nicer to itself; I mean, can't she see how awesome she is?

big post abt a bunch of my twilight-centric aus (i have lots more that arent about twilight hahah) along with her partner in each au bc i dont want to draw and describe the entire cast of each one rn. also the designs here arent “final” or anything, just what comes to mind when i draw them usually. ok
1. basic au
Tumblr media
this ones pretty close to canon and its the one i draw/reference most often. there are minor changes to events in the show (ex. chrysalis gets reformed, starswirl becomes a villain, etc) but its basically the same, especially when it comes to the actual characters! not much to say about this one! pinkie and twilight get married sometime before the finale
2. starryverse au
Tumblr media
my most cherished au... i could go on forever about this one!! this au is a “reboot” type thing— all the characters have new names, different designs, and altered personalities and roles. twilight twinkle is a pony created by princess solstice out of pure magic (although twilight doesnt know that). i would write many essays about this if i could so ill Not do that right now... twilight twinkle is very eager to make friends but is pretty bad at it. rose quartz pie (aka rosie pie) becomes her first friend and from then on, twilight has a silly puppy love crush on her that eventually becomes mutual love. rosie pie is an energetic and empathetic baker who specializes in baking party treats.
3. swap au
Tumblr media
all the mane 6 ponies are different types of ponies now! ta daaaaa! twilight is an earth pony specializing in potion magic, and pinkie is a party planner who has REALLY weak magic when it comes to anything but chaos and parties. fluttershy is a super strong earth pony who is kind of afraid of her own strength—however, it gives her an advantage when dealing with large or dangerous animals. rainbow dash is a unicorn with the dream of becoming the first-ever unicorn wonderbolt, using her special magic that allows her to run on air. rarity is a pegasus who loves making artistic weather patterns, though these arent always very effective at... weather. she also makes beautiful aerodynamic clothing. applejack is also a pegasus, and feels out of place among her earth pony family. (the secret twist is that her mom was a pegasus! wowww!) she makes special apple treats made from the best apples at the top of the trees, which only she can reach.
4. ascension au
Tumblr media
in this au, all of the mane 6 become alicorns and live together and love each other forever and ever YAY
5. time travel au
Tumblr media
in this au, twilight accidentally travelled back in time as a teenager to a time before luna was corrupted by nightmare moon. she didnt know about luna, as she was kept a secret by celestia in the present. she and luna fell in love, and had twilight stayed, luna probably wouldnt have become corrupted, since she wouldve had someone who appreciated and believed in her. however, twilight was eventually transported back to the present, thanks to her family finding a spell to bring her back. after learning ehat eventually happened to luna, twilight began trying to create a spell that would free her from the moon. in this au twilight would temporarily be a “villain”
6. basically just canon
Tumblr media
in this universe pretty much nothing from canon is changed besides designs. the only thing changed is that instead of “spreading the word of the storm kings defeat” (lol?? thats what magic is for) tempest becomes twilights personal guard. (seriously, why do all the other princesses get guards?)
7. starlight glimmer fucking dies au
Tumblr media
ok kidding she doesnt die she just never gets redeemed... instead the “seventh mane 6 member” is luna! after lunas return, she is sent to live in ponyville (because, like, theres NO way she was ready to just. rule equestria) luna is super powered down, out of fear that she could become corrupted again. some of her power is stored in the moon pendant she wears, in case she needs it in an emergency! luna becomes great friends with all of the main characters... i have ideas on how she’d get along with each one heheh! but her dearest friend is twilight sparkle... they just understand each other in a way nopony else can!
anyway ya theres all my silly aus... im very in love with all of them so ask me about them/any characters in them and ill gladly tell u

MLP Shorts!
Hey, guess what? The final season starts in three weeks! What a ride it’s been, eh? The ups, the downs, the even-further-downs... But at least it’s all coming to an end, right? What will it build to? Only time will tell.
For now, though, there are a TON of shorts that I apparently totally missed in the interim, so it’s time to catch up on those. This week, I’m doing the canon (I guess?) “Best Gift Ever” shorts; the next two weeks will cover the EQG shorts.
“Triple Pony Dare Ya”
“Tallulah”? As in Bankhead? Or the Ellen Page movie? What an odd reference.
What? How does that mean she wins? She just did something the other two have already done several times (i.e. dare somepony to do something that they couldn’t). I don’t... Whatever. It’s Pinkie. Nothing she does matters anyway.
“The Great Escape Room”
They already did an escape room, right? I didn’t imagine that, did I?
“We’re having fun!” I think that right there sums up the change in Pinkie’s character and why it’s so obnoxious. She no longer cares about anypony else’s well-being as long as she’s enjoying herself.
“Mystery Voice”
The school has a PA system? Ugh. I know I don’t really bring up technology-related problems I have with the show anymore, but...
“Let’s go have a friendly teacher chat...” Ooh, Rainbow Dash is gonna beat the shit out of somepony.
I think Ashleigh Ball wanted to have some fun and not do the same two voices forever and ever. Good on her.
“Rarity’s Biggest Fan”
I believe the idea of hairspray is to make your mane move less, Rarity, so I’m not sure why you thought that would help.
Poor Spike.
“Ail-icorn”
Wow. That swollen horn looks painful.
Poor Spike.
“Teacher of the Month”
Fluttershy is the master of burying the lede.
Way to open your big mouth, Applejack.
“Starlight the Hypnotist”
Yay, it’s Starlight! She’ll do something fun, right?
...but, once again, Pinkie Pie ruins everything. Sigh.
“Sundae, Sundae, Sundae”
I feel like it wouldn’t need to be sunny for the ice cream to melt. An ice cream museum should probably be indoors.
Aaaaaand Pinkie just impaled everypony. To the hospital!

Card Shark 9: Smolder, Culture Shock
The first Friends Forever Mane critique has arrived! This one is pretty interesting and I have a lot to say. Let's take a look at "Smolder, Culture Shock!"
Following the trend of "confront to flip" is nothing new. But after the flip? If a Faceoff is activated, you can exhaust Smolder and force your opponent to discard a card from their hand... and then use that card's power against them. I don't think we've ever had an Orange Mane like this. This is pretty crazy. It doesn't matter what kind of Faceoff it is or if Smolder is involved or not - you can still make 'em discard. This can work with some of the Orange Farming decks I've seen with Maud Pie and Ambassador of Honesty. You need a lot of Friends to support it, but Farming decks appreciate that support anyway, and there are plenty of options in that regard. I’ve seen a lot of support for our goddess Smolder on the CCG forums. While I do believe she is cool and could make for some interesting games, I don’t think she’s the best Orange Mane we’ve had (I would nominate Ambassador of Honesty for that position). My reasoning? Smolder has one fatal flaw.
My big problem is the part where it says "have an opponent discard a card." That means the opponent chooses what card they're discarding, not you. And that means it could go poorly for you. Maybe your opponent is running a 0 power card like Forest Owl, Paper Twi, or the new Queen Chrysalis. They can discard one of the 0 power cards and your Ember/Vapor Trail/whatever is getting no boost. Granted, this could be avoided with a Competitive card, and you do have the option of deciding which card gets the boost after your opponent discards. The other thing about Orange Farming decks is that they focus on dishing out power counters with Diligent and other abilities. Let’s say we take a classic Orange Farming deck and replace the Mane with Smolder. If the deck plays the same way, would that extra power be needed? I also can’t think of any Orange-centric cards that screw with the opponent’s discard pile. Decks have options to play cards from the discard pile. I do have to give Smolder credit, however, for being possibly the first Mane of its kind, but don’t expect me to swap my darling Grubber for her.
Here are some cards I recommend using alongside Smolder:
*Double Diamond, Ski Champ. There's nothing wrong with dual-color decks, but if you want to go mono-Orange, you only have one option for guaranteed boosts, and that's this guy. He's a bit on the pricey side, but he effectively gives you a minimum of 6 power every Faceoff, and that's nothing to sneeze at. Should your opponent surprise you with a 0 power card, Double Diamond can make up the loss.
*Somnambula, Pillar of Hope. Oh hey, a new Friends Forever card I can recommend! Boola forces your opponent to play with their hand revealed, so that way you can scope out what your opponent might be planning to discard with your Smolder. Sure, it doesn’t mean you pick what gets discarded, but it allows you to prepare for low-powered cards coming for the discard. (Not to mention it can also get you some free draws.)
*Applejack and Twilight Sparkle, Soup Du Jour. Another way to make up potentially lost power in Farming decks is this Orange/Purple duo. What I like about Soup Du Jour is the fact that it doesn't have to be involved in the Troublemaker Faceoff to work. It can be at home, it can be at the opposite Problem, whatever! Like Double Diamond, it's a bit pricey, but I think that guarantee of an extra flip is worth it.
*Balloonoculars. Like Somnambula, this Resource allows you to view your opponent’s hand and prepare for low-powered cards that your opponent could potentially discard. Unlike Boola, though, you can not only draw extra cards, but distribute power counters! This Resource is the perfect weapon for Smolder. Just beware of Bewitched Beavers or other Resource-dismissing cards. Side note: If you want to be EXTRA CRUEL, have both Balloonoculars and Somnambula out at the same time.
*Magical Misfire. This is one of the only cards I can think of that just straight up stop your opponent from digging into their discard pile. BANISH THAT PILE TO THE DEPTHS OF TARTARUS. You’d have to time it right, however, so be careful how you misfire that magic.
And there you have it! Sorry to disappoint, but I like Grubber better! Thank you for reading. Don't forget to vote on my Twitter @diamondsong42 to tell me what Friend I should write about next! Diamond out!

I dont know anything about mlp but go off dude
Here I’ll generalize it for you even if you didn’t really ask
The main character is twilight who’s a fucking incel and only made the 5 friends she got becauseher adoptive mother is only there to force her into a destiny she saw for her in prophetic dreams. She forgets she even has a brother until the end of season 2, and during season 4 we learned she gave somebody mega depression because she left town and didn’t go to their birthday party. She’s cool but she’s a degenerate lowkey and we don’t notice because her voice is sweet and she’s smart
Rarity! I love rarity. She likes glittery things and being an artist, but the writers forgot about that about halfway through season 1, and didn’t remember until season 3, when she had an episode where she sung about being generous. Which by the way, is supposed to be her element, and she is supposed to exemplify it regularly. But they forgot so bad, they had to make her sing about it. She’s currently the most successful horse in the group, chasing her dreams of owning dress/outfit shops all over the continent. She earned what she got through working hard and being an absolute darling. Fuck yea rarity
Rainbow dash is like basically the shows mascot right. Everybody knows that because she’s the cool bitch. Everybody loves the cool bitch. Whatever. She may look alright but she’s no different than the white boys you see getting red faced in a simple game of dodge ball. Though also chasing her dreams, which was to join what we thought was just a group of fancy fliers who perform for important ponies, but later in like season 2 kinda and past 4 that was changed to be the Pegasus military? Who are just a bunch of assholes. And she gets in and wonders why she, the asshole, is getting treated badly by bigger assholes. Anyways, she’s competitive and snarky and obnoxious and I don’t like her as much as I used to. Probably because I’m not 14 and know what a good character is now (barely. I’m still 10 tbh)
Pinkie pie is great! Love that wild bitch! Holy fuck! Again all her shortcomings come from shitty writers who don’t know how to write ‘lol random’ characters as anything but annoying bitches who don’t care about people’s feelings. Which isn’t true. Pinkie cares the most out of anybody. She knows everything about everybody in her whole town because she loves them so much and knows what makes them happy. She literally keeps everyone in ponyville from slitting each other’s throats by keeping them all happy and cheerful. She would assassinate an asshole for you if you told her it would make you the peachiest motherfucker in the universe forever. She shines brightest in episodes centered around her
Applejack ??? Cool fuckin awesome and the best family member figure in the show 90% of the time , which is high considering all the other shit we see. Her parents are dead and she takes the roll of both of them and runs a farm that sends shit all around the country on a constant basis. She’s like that one Dad who can fix anything but fucks up the most simple shit. Could really use a nap still. Also a shame you don’t learn anything interesting about her until about season 3, but barely so. Obsessive and has an unhealthy addiction to unneeded routines and tradition. My enjoyment of her fluctuates, but it is 100% real shit that she has ALL of the best songs in the show. It’s a fact and I won’t be convinced otherwise.
Fluttershy is lovely. Cute! But falls victim to writers not knowing how to write characters with anxiety or fears well at all. The morals of her episodes are weak, but are usually pretty ok eps. She’s just trying her best and I appreciate her effort. She’s good at a lot of things that she never ever acknowledges or gives herself credit for. If the episode isn’t about her, you might forget she’s even there sometimes. Oh well. Despite all her issues and shortcomings both in writing and character, she’s my second favorite in the main group. She looks like how the softest most fluffiest blanket in the world feels.
I think this enough talk of horses for now but I’m working a night shit and I can’t sleep and have nothing better to do I’m sorry

Trying to get back into writing, so I took some ficlet prompts in the server I’m in! Feel free to send me a request if you’ve got one!
“Oh, I don’t know, Rainbow. Running’s not really... um. I don’t think I’d be good at it.”
“Nonsense, ‘Shy! I saw you sprint just yesterday when someone slammed a door too loudly behind you!”
Fluttershy looked at her shoes.
“Okay, bad example.” For a moment Fluttershy hoped she’d be able to sneak away, but Rainbow was nothing if not persistent. “Listen, you don’t have to stick with it. Just go to a practice or two, see how you like it. You can hang out with me! When I’m not running, of course.”
And that was how Fluttershy, who’d never done a sport in her life, ended up on the Ponyville Prep track and field team. She’d protested more, of course, but Rainbow was always a very convincing friend. And perhaps she did need to get out of her shell a little bit.
This all sounded good until she actually got to the track oval, and saw just how many people were stretching and chatting on the grass. She squeaked and ducked behind the bleachers. She knew she couldn’t hide forever; rainbow was counting on her. She’d certainly never lie to her friend! Not on purpose, anyway. What had she said, anyway? Technically she had shown up... just not for very long.
“You looking for something, Sugarcube?”
Fluttershy squeaked in surprise, turning around in time to see... an absolute Amazon of a woman. She was tall, muscular, and well tanned. Her straw blonde hair was tied in a tight french braid, and she wearing what was obviously workout gear.
By way of response, Fluttershy swallowed. She had trouble speaking at the best of times, and staring at the most beautiful woman she’d ever seen was not exactly her best.
Staring! Right! Rude to stare! She forced her eyes down to the ground.
“Cat got your tongue, huh?”
Fluttershy nodded meekly.
“Well, you’re wearing running shorts so I wager you’re looking for the track team. That’s where I’m going. Follow me?”
They were literally right next to the track, so clearly Wonderwoman was just humouring her, but she appreciated it nonetheless. There were still people on the track, but somehow they faded out in the presence of the statue in front of her.
“Alright everyone, circle up!” A tall woman with a clipboard called from the end of the track.
“Never did get your name, Sugarcube.”
Fluttershy started. “Oh, Um, it’s... Fluttershy.”
“Fluttershy. Nice to meet ya. I’m Applejack.”
In the end, Fluttershy decided to stay on the track team after all.

Pone Reviews 25: Friendship is Magic, Part 1 and 2 Welcome to the 25th installment of Pone Reviews! I know 25 doesn't seem like a big deal, but I wanted to do something special anyway. 25 felt like a number to focus on another two-parter, and what would this show be without the two-parter that started it all, "Friendship is Magic!" I won't keep you waiting. Let's dive right in! Because this is the series opener, it doesn't really have a moral. Instead I'll look at each of the situations that solidified our Mane Character's primary characteristics. Applejack's seems to make the least sense. How exactly does reassuring your friend they won't fall to their doom show honesty? I'm having trouble connecting the two. Applejack could have lied and let Twilight get hurt, so it could have gone either way. Is it because Twilight realized Applejack wasn't fibbing? I guess so. Fluttershy's is straightforward and really stresses her kindness, love of animals, and initial, well, shyness. In contrast to Applejack, which revealed the honesty part and nothing else. And what better animal to stress kindness with than a big, (seemingly) scary manticore? Now how about Pinkie? I think her bubbliness was made concrete early on and this helped stress that. Laughing at trees doesn't really reveal much about a character. And I can't think of an episode after this where this concept was referenced again. As for Rarity... damn, that's deep. Yes, it shows her generosity and fashion-forwardness. But I'm pretty sure that's one of the most generous things Rarity has ever done. How long did it take her to grow that tail? And the loss of her tail clearly hit her hard, yet she shook it off and continued on. For Rainbow Dash, the Shadowbolts help showcase her loyalty, love of the Wonderbolts, and ego. There's really not much more I have to say about that. And Twilight didn't really have one, but I think the magic part is enforced through her studies with Princess Celestia. Overall, I'd say they were good stepping stones for viewers to get to know the Mane 6. So what about the opener as a whole? It doesn't have the same charm as other MLP two-parters, which is to be expected. But I think it does a nice job of introducing the characters. It pushes more characteristics of theirs that are just as common as their element traits. Twilight is (initially) an antisocial book lover. Pinkie loves parties and throwing parties for everyone in Ponyville. Rainbow is into speed and pranks. Rarity is the most stylish. Applejack is devoted to her family. And Fluttershy doesn't open up so easily. The opener also pushes some habits of Spike, primarily his notetaking duties for Twilight and how he gets tired easily due to being a baby dragon. Besides the characters, the opener sets some of Equestria's lore in stone that is mentioned again later on. Nightmare Moon and the two princesses. The Castle of the Two Sisters. The Summer Sun Celebration. The Elements of Harmony. Golden Oak Library. All big aspects of the show. This beginning of the franchise feels so simple compared to later two-parters (such as the most recent "Shadow Play"), yet it instills in viewers a love for these characters and message that friendship is magic. And it's marvelous. Now here are some of the smaller things I enjoyed about this opener: *APPLE APPLE APPLE APPLE APPLE APPLE *Steven Magnet is such a doll. *I find it interesting how each of the Mane 6 (sans Twilight) has a major role in the Summer Sun Celebration. We see in "Celestial Advice" that Celestia knew about these ponies... maybe they were nominated to play these big roles for the Celebration on purpose? *Princess Luna's design after being defeated doesn't feature her flowing hair and depicts her with slightly different coloring and stature. I like how it emphasizes that Luna has been essentially drained of her evil magic and must restart. *While I like Assertive Fluttershy as much as the next guy, it is adorable to see her meek side here. *The design of Twilight's Canterlot library is pretty sweet. *The Shadowbolts! The Shadowbolts are so cool. We need more Shadowbolts. Shadowbolts forever. *Apple Bloom wins best face of the episode. YOU KNOW WHY. And now here are some moments where I felt everything went a little flat: *Some of the animation errors, such as Celestia missing her legs and Pinkie missing her ears after Nightmare Moon is defeated, are too noticeable and they bug my OCD. *Why would Twilight, the most detail-oriented pony in the show, somehow miss the fact she pours a gallon of HOT SAUCE into her punch? *We have never seen Manny Roar the manticore again and it makes me sad. *I acknowledge that Spike hugging Twilight is pretty cute, but isn't he choking her? His arms are right around her neck. *How does that chariot stay in the air? *I expected a 1000+ year reunion to be a lot more sentimental. Overall: The start to a legendary fandom that has changed my and so many others' lives forever. Not perfect, but it still has charm. 4 out of 5 rainbows 🌈🌈🌈🌈 That closes today's edition of Pone Reviews. Come back tomorrow for a review of an episode with a memorable cameo by a certain grey Pegasus... what was her name again? Season 7 Retrospective
Well, we’re between highly anticipated movie releases this weekend (for me, anyway), so it’s time for our annual look back over the season!
Good lord, the beginning of Season 7 seemed like so long ago. I could have sworn the Flurry Heart episode was last season. Maybe this has just been a really long year. Well...okay, yeah, I can certainly see why it would feel that way, given the year this has been.
With a rating of 4-9-13 (W-L-T), this season must have been better than the last one, even if it didn’t feel like it. Season 8 is forthcoming, so how long before Hasbro gives up and reboots the series again? Only time will tell.
So, here we are. From best to worst:
#1. “Secrets and Pies”: This episode was...good? Like, really, really good? Why? I don’t get it! I wouldn't be so confused if you guys did this more often! I swear, the next time this happens, I'm going to get whiplash!
#2. “Rock Solid Friendship”: To complement the really good Pinkie Pie episode, here’s an episode that was really good in every way except Pinkie Pie! They’re at exact opposite ends of the season, too. Maybe it’s an equivalent exchange thing.
#3. “Triple Threat”: I thought this episode did a pretty good job of avoiding the “why don’t you just tell them?” problem that virtually every episode of every sitcom runs into. We’ve already established that Thorax is a whiny little milquetoast weenie and that Ember is a heinous prick who doesn’t listen to anybody but herself. Hell, that was the entire reason for the conflict in the first place! Honestly, why would Spike try to reason with either of them?
#4. “To Change a Changeling: If the monster hadn’t turned out to be a giant mole, the ending battle might have seemed a little more life-threatening. That, Starlight’s very, very stupid plan, and Pharynx’s abusive ass made this episode a little worse than it should have been. Apart from that, though, I liked it!
And now here’s the hardest part of the list: trying to figure out which “tie” episodes were slightly better or worse than all the others.
#5. “Once Upon a Zeppelin”: Yeah, Twilight’s parents were annoying (and idiots), but not to the point that I’m going to dread them ever showing up in any future episodes (unlikely as that is at this point). Plus, bringing back Iron Will actually seemed to have a point, and it helped that he didn’t have to “unlearn” his lesson from his first appearance just to make the current episode make sense.
#6. “Uncommon Bond”: This episode went out of its way to prove that yes, Starlight and Sunburst really do have only one thing in common. I would have expected the resolution to be the realization that the two of them liked more things than just that board game, but nope! Giant version! That’s it!
#7. “Daring Done?”: I was so distracted this episode that I forgot to mention that Pinkie Pie was actually acting like Pinkie Pie and not an annoying little shitbag! It was refreshing! But anyway, you’d think Daring-Do would have written enough books by this point to realize the obvious tropes this episode followed. The real challenge for her is going to be stretching this adventure out to novel-length.
#8. “Discordant Harmony”: I’m still not sure what made Discord think he needed to change a bunch of shit about his house to make Fluttershy happy. It looked the same way he made her house look every time he visited her. What did he think she was expecting?
#9. “A Health of Information”: This is the second episode in a row on this list where Fluttershy acted kind of like a doofus throughout the episode for no discernible reason. It also proved that unicorns are the solution to everything. Need to grab some moss from a swamp without falling in? Unicorn! Need to collect honey from the flash bees without going anywhere near them? Unicorn! Need to destroy an entire planet without breaking a sweat? Unicron!
#10 & #11. “Shadow Play (Parts 1 and 2)”: The first half fools you into thinking this isn’t just going to be a run-of-the-mill finale episode by promising you a halfway interesting quest before immediately giving you all the artifacts within a few minutes. Ha! Gotcha!
#12. “Hard to Say Anything”: I’d kind of hoped we were past the whole “two men competing for the trophy that is the personality-deprived female character” cliché, especially in a show designed for children, but I guess not. I mean, at least Big Mac and Feather do realize that’s what they’re doing by the end, but that doesn’t fix Sugar Belle’s “sexy lamp” issue.
#13. “A Royal Problem”: Has Twilight been of help to any friendship-related issues since she stopped being the main character? I think these episodes must be based on Twilight's memoirs, i.e. this isn't how things actually happened; this is how she remembers them happening. Here's what really happened during "Magical Mystery Cure":
Twilight Sparkle: So...I accidentally totally and completely fucked up my friends’ lives, but then I fixed it! That means I'm good at having friends, right?
Princess Celestia (sarcastically): Oh, yeah, you're a regular princess of friendship.
Twilight Sparkle: *gasp* Really?!
Princess Celestia: Oh, no, I didn't mean– Ah, crap, the music's already started. ♫ You've come such a long, long way... ♫
Princess Celestia (mentally): I've really got to stop using the word “princess” as an insult. This is the third one this week. I'm running out of castles! She'll just have to stay in the library until I can find another one.
#14. “All Bottled Up”: This episode is a perfect example of why the writers typically just don’t include characters in an episode if they have nothing to do in said episode. That escape room nonsense was just stupid. The six of you might be best friends, but you have never gotten along that well!
#15. “Celestial Advice”: Ugh, this one. “As a teacher, I have to send my student away. I don’t know exactly why I have to do that, but I’m sure I’ll figure the reason out later. Oh, wait, you don’t want to leave? Well, that changes everything! You can stay!” I think they were making this one up as they went along.
#16. “The Perfect Pear”: One of the emptiest “love” stories I’ve ever seen. This was an “attraction story”, if you can even call it that. This is another case where I’m positive that at least a hundred better fanfics had been written about this exact story before the episode was released. I get why people have headcanons about things now. Why wouldn’t you have a fanon when the canon is so...weak?
#17. “Honest Apple”: Once again, we have a brand-new writer for this episode. Kevin Lappin was very likely just given a slip of paper with “APPLEJACK = HONEST” written on it, which constituted the entire material he had to work with. That might explain why Applejack was such an unlikable prick for the entire episode.
Whoo... All right. Here we go.
#18. “A Flurry of Emotions”: If you don’t want to watch your kid (because, seriously, you’ve got better things to do), just show up at one of your relatives’ houses one day and dump it on them. They’ll have such a guilt trip that they’ll be glad to accept! But make sure it’s someone who’s completely unqualified for the job and has a mountain of other responsibilities first. That’s the best way!
#19. “Campfire Tales”: The fact that this episode was actually just a clunky setup for the finale might explain why all three stories sucked so hard. It’s this season’s The Mummy!
#20. “Not Asking for Trouble”: Now we’re going to get into the part of the list where I have to figure out which episodes are worse by balancing how much the episode irritated me in general with how toxic the moral is. Trust me, if your children’s show has a moral of “Do what you want to do for other people, regardless of what those people have explicitly told you not to do, because you’ll end up being right in the end. After all, people don’t know what they want!”, you’ve fucked up something awful.
#21. “Fluttershy Leans In”: I said in this review that this felt like the MLP version of The Fountainhead, but I only just recently realized that I also said the same thing about Season 5's "Canterlot Boutique". Given that the episodes were written by different people, this must be a storyline that creative types really like (even if it’s nothing more than a power fantasy).
#22. “It Isn’t the Mane Thing About You”: All right, you actually had a good idea with this one. Despite being the Element of Generosity, one of Rarity's main problems has always been her vanity. That means you pulled off the rare feat of making the moral both 1. something the character hasn't already learned in a previous episode and 2. something that a normal functioning member of society might not automatically possess. (There has been a distressing number of lessons in the past five seasons or so that don't fit one or both of these qualifications.) It's just a shame you crashed and burned so spectacularly by 1. turning the moral from “don't be vain” to “have confidence” (something Rarity has never struggled with AND which you have already had as the moral in MULTIPLE previous episodes) and 2. went about it in the most nonsensical way possible!
#23. “Parental Glideance”: This one was a little sickening. The “my parents are so embarrassing!” trope is bad enough, but you’re an adult, Rainbow Dash! Grow up! If the things your parents are doing embarrass you (or if they’re legitimately dangerous, like SHOOTING FIREWORKS OFF AT AN AIRSHOW), talk to them! You can do that without snapping and acting like a dick!
#24. “Forever Filly”: Holy crap, I have never wanted to punch a fictional cartoon character in the face as badly as I did in this episode. I don’t know what made Sweetie Belle act like such a little shit or why Rarity is so out of touch with her (seeing as Sweetie Belle would have had to have been about four to be into the stuff she was trying to do), but I hated this. Shove your black box experimental theater up your ass.
#25. “Marks and Recreation”: I got the sense from the beginning of the series that cutie marks were originally supposed to be something really deep and meaningful. I mean, they’re your passion. They represent that thing that you love so much and are so good at that you can spend the rest of your life doing it and wearing a permanent symbol of it on your body. Well, not anymore! Now it’s just some obligatory shit that you get because you have to and that doesn’t have any real meaning at all! Fuck you! Just...fuck you!
#26. “Fame and Misfortune”: Yeah, no surprise there. Holy shit, this was a painful experience. Like “Stranger Than Fan Fiction”, this was just embarrassing to watch. To quote somebody else, “...you don't get back at critics by attacking them, you do it by ignoring them and continuing to be awesome.” Hell, this episode's moral is contradicted by its own existence. “You shouldn't be affected by criticism of your work. That’s why I wrote this episode where all my critics are painted as raving lunatics and I am totally the victim!” The fact that this is the SECOND such episode is just pathetic. This one actually manages to be worse, though, because, unlike the earlier episode when it was just Quibble Pants being a dick, this one paints the ENTIRE fandom as either complaining whiners who hate everything or creepy stalkers who follow everywhere you go. Nothing says “we want you to keep watching” like insulting the few fans you have left right to their face!
Remember, next week is the review of the remaining six Equestria Girls: Summertime Shorts. Be there!
