Oh my, She did it again! (a.k.a Ikevamp artbreeder edits this time - Pt. 2)
Yup, here we go, Part 2! Let's resume!
Part 1 here, if you missed it!
• Leonardo da Vinci
(I admit I was worried about him, when I started. I couldn't convert his avatar into a semi-realistic guy in my head immediately, so I was unsure. But I went with it, kind of mindlessly and just enjoyed the ride. And it worked! I think he got that mature, older-man look! A relaxed but piercing stare at the same time, and a laid-back expression! His hair is nothing like the game design but you know... I don't hate the extra curls. ;))
Tumblr media
• Comte de Saint-Germain
(This is my take on him. It's not so good, not so bad, it's something... But I know I'll never be able to live down @redweed 's edit of him, that I saw once, it was utter perfection. He didn't even got the exact hair color, and its shape has a life of its own. Sorry, Comte. I went for and older, more mature look for him too, like Leo, since the dude's an ancient vampire, so might as well add some age to his gentlemanly features. Maybe his stare is a bit harsh? Not as welcoming and gentle, but a decent try from me!)
Tumblr media
• Jean d'Arc
(Again, that one guy with the eyepatch. But this time I didn't struggle that much when drawing it on after. Yeah, I also edited his hair... The other picture is the actual portrait I achieved in artbreeder, minus the eye color. His hair was impossible to do - for me at least -, so I didn't even try. Like with Comte. I went more for the hair color, instead. It's decent, I like his blank and stone-faced stare. And I like how the hair and eyepatch drawing came out! He looks nice!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
(He was one of the first — IF NOT the first that I completed. I don't remember. His features overall seem a bit strange and a bit possessed, with this eye color. His hair is a tad bit longer than in the game, but I'm actually surprised and happy that I could keep the pure white and it doesn't fade into a grayish color midway, just at the neck area, where it's darker anyway, due to shadows and overlapping lol. I'm satisfied with it! He's a bit grumpy but isn't he always like that?)
Tumblr media
• William Shakespeare
(I admit, I kind of forgot about him, and I realized in the last minute that he's missing. Sorry, Shakes. He was similar to Leonardo, couldn't really imagine him right away, but as I searched and just went with it, it came out nice in the end! I went for a gentle look and longer hair, but damn— this time his hair came out really long XD. It looks like he has a long ponytail that reaches his shoulders, and it's a big unhinged, but it's okay since Will is unhinged too, sometimes. Even his mismatched eyes look nice, I like him!)
Tumblr media
• Vlad
(I REALLY wanted to go for that soft and pure smile he usually wears! But he also has strong features; a long, firm jaw and nicely curved mouth, so it took a while. But I achieved what I wanted! And in the end, his hair came out good too! By that time, I didn't even pay that much attention to hairstyles. But he looks decent nonetheless, in my opinion. I kind of messed up with his eye color, but nvm. He has that sweet, pure but adult-like, mature look at the same time.)
Tumblr media
• Johann Georg Faust
(Okay, OKAY. Everyone calm down! Don't lose control, I know he looks really good! XD. No, but for real, I didn't even spent that much time on him — with editing on glasses and all. AND HE CAME OUT LIKE THIS. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO'S IN LOVE?? Be my husband, Faust. I was interested in him so far too, but NOW. Although the shape of his glasses are kinda off, you can see the general idea. I drew on his ear cuff and the small chain attached to it, connecting it with his specs, and edited his eyes, but I didn't even need to touch his hair! He just looks sooo good. And his strict, ruthless expression is one to die for too!)
Tumblr media
• Charles-Henri Sanson
(I wanted to make him soft, but not as soft as Vincent. And I wanted to add difference in his features too, of course. I unintentionally made his hair this curly, but it makes him cuter in my opinion. I wanted a semi-smiling, gentle expression on him. I didn't draw his earrings on, and his eyes don't pop as much as in the art. But he's precious, isn't he?)
Tumblr media
Yay, another one of the Ikemen games is done!
(Now I need to make one for the Sengoku guys, right? Well, who knows, my page is pretty messed up now in artbreeder lol.)
Overall I'm really satisfied with the whole gang, they look really nice!
And the realistic filter helped them a lot! <3

so just watched hocus pocus for the first time (only ever saw little parts of it, never got to see it when it was rerunning on tv during halloween sorryy) and it was amazing. loved it. another movie to add to my (non-existent) top 10 halloween movies list.
and then i stumbled upon a little cbbc show “young dracula.” and i was like, ya know what, why not? i'll give it a try.
unknowingly started watching the season 1 finale, so i was like, wow they really didn't introduce anything or anyone? but ya know what, i get it. the plot's simple:
(awful, kinda shit dad) count dracula moved from transylvania to the british suburbs with his (not favorite) teen daughter Ingrid (who's on board with being a vampire, killing people, organizing hunts where the possible victims are her brother's friend's family??, etc.) and his (favorite) son Vlad (who's reluctant about, ya know, killing people. and wants to just be normal boy and have friends) after being left by his vampire wife (who left him from a werewolf) and chased by too many angry peasant mobs.
so i realized “oh. this was episode 14, not 1. welp . . . i already like it?”
then i proceeded to watch the first episode and I ALREADY LOVE IT??
some gems:
robin. just robin as a character. bless him (and the whole goth child/ normie family dynamic and visuals - set design, clothing)
vlad finding the new family home - “best i could find on the internet short notice”
ingrid: this is bc he's your favorite, isn't it. count dracula: yes, that's right. (poor ingrid)
count dracula, looking at a portrait of his (ex)wife: ugh, in the attic. behind some boxes. under a sheet!
talking, stuffed (?) wolf
vlad: can't we have something normal, like, a hamburger? count: oh! a person from hamburg? vlad: nO!
vlad: who are you?? robin, while hanging from a window a few stories up, about to fall, having been caught by vlad: what a good time to have a discussion!!
the whole “are you here to donate blood?” bit
anyway, did not expect to get attached to this show, but here i am.

Just finished playing DLS, and I need to take this off my chest, sorry for the long text. 😅
[SPOILERS AHEAD] That flashback with Huma, Aysha and little Mehmed and Hasan, gosh how could those people treat a child like that, Mehmed was the cutest thing and didn't even understand why no one would play with him. That boy was rejected by everyone around him including his father! And even exiled when he was a kid! I have to admit I was really pleasantly surprised on 1448's Mehmed though, he seemed to understand how wrong he was using his power to make people suffer as he had suffered, that this is not the way. But still now all I want to do is to hug, and protect and love him! Hope the author will let us do so! I think MC and Mehmed are deeply connected somehow and that he will become an important character... Idk..
Real life Mehmed was the greatest sultan, he conquered Constantinople when he was 20yrs old, banished the law that prohibited painting portraits, brought cultures together and he was a smart and freethinker leader. Hoping for DLS Mehmed to turn out to be like that as well.
I'm suspecting that maybe the villain could be that guy that used to be sultan's friend but betrayed him, Vlad seemed to share that guy's feeling. So what if that guy made a deal with darks forces and Vlad managed to meet him and made the same deal? The guy wouldn't like Vlad being able to cure himself from the darkness then, and he would be hella powerful AND old, older and more powerful than Vlad. It wouldn't makes sense if Mehmed was evil because the battle that made Vlad's famous was against Mehmed's troops, and by Noe's story Vlad was the "villain" there.
Now, Noe totally represents me, what he said about the cliches of romance summarizing the relationship with Vlad and Leo was exactly what I was thinking ! I don't regret for a minute choosing to save him.
On that note, my Mc seems to be romancing Vlad even though I am NOT ? I mean, I chose all the options that improves relationship with all LI but only to be on their good side, I only bought ONE scene with Vlad, the first one that was available after mc wake up tied up with vines, and the dog one as well only because I wanted to adopt her, but when I was supposed to choose someone that I care about I would choose my sister or no one at all because I don't want to romance them, just to be friends.
Still in this last chapter when mc was saying goodbye to the boys it said that Aslan noticed that the relationship between Vlad and MC was closer than friends, but it isn't ! I didn't choose any romantic scenes with him! And I'm locked out from Aslan's romantic scenes, not that I care, but if Mehmed or Noe become an LI I want to go for them ! Am I screwed? 😭
Tumblr media
Kidding 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well, I wish they hadn't put "that scene" with him and Lale. Because now it's hard to empathize with him, I know he went through bad things in his childhood and it certainly helped to form that bad part and his behavior, but I don't think it's justifiable.
One of the things that a Reddit Mod pointed out that I think makes sense is that in the apology scene, they're different. Because if you have a bad relationship with him, you're going to hate him even more. I think he should, regardless of MC's relationship with him, genuinely apologize and not just for the sake of it. I think the character development shouldn't depend on the MC's choice, but the book plot. But let's see what happens, we still have 2 seasons to go.
Your theory about Vlad's powers is great, it reminds the plot of the movie with Luke Evans, it makes sense. It will be interesting to see.
I also saved Noe, I knew he was going to be valuable in the future. I liked that he had a redemption 🥰
Because the book is about Vlad, I think that's unavoidable, he has more screen time so to speak. I hope there will be more LIs in the future too! I think putting 2 more will make sense for another 2 seasons. Now whether it's going to be Noe or Mehmed is still a bit unclear (although I think they're pulling that way anyway).

Chapter 51: The First Step
William has been distant since I gave him the note. At first, I thought he was being cautious, that he was worried about me getting involved with Vlad. As the days went on, however, my perspective shifted. I’m pretty sure he’s jealous, but what I don’t know is who he is jealous of.
Despite any reserves he might have had, he gave Vlad the note, and returned with a response the next morning. That was a good start to setting my plan in motion, and then all I had to do is wait.
And wait I did. Less than a week of patience shouldn’t feel as tedious as it did, but I managed. Since Will was being insufferable, I stopped going to his rehearsals, to the desmay of the troupe. I liked those guys, but the tension between me and their director was palpable enough to dampen everyone’s mood, and I prefered to let them work without that unsavory distraction.
I also met Zola again. It happened the day I first walked out of rehearsal. I had ended up at the high street, browsing shops witout any intention of buying anything, just to kill the time. Émile bumped into me near a display stand and realized we were both eyeing the same notebook, a beatifully crafted one bound in marbled fabric.
“All yours, I’m just looking,” I said, making his eyes go wide when he looked at me. It appears he did not recognize me until I spoke.
“Mademoiselle Anaïs, fancy seeing you here!”
“Good morning, monsieur Zola,” I smiled politely.
“Please, call me Émile. Care to promenade with me?” When I nodded, he continued, offering me his arm. “How’s that talented painter friend of yours? Any new works to look forward to?”
“I, uh.. I have not seen Vincent in a while, to be frank.”
“Oh, how come?”
Our conversation was cut short as we arrived at the registry, where the bearded writer paid for the notebook. I slightly regretted not getting it for myself, but shook away that desire with the reminder that I have no use for it anyway.
“Nevermind that,” I nonchalantly changed the topic as we stepped out into the street. “What are you working on at the moment?”
“Well,” he started, adjusting his hat, “that portrait of yours struck a chord within me, mademoiselle. I have been hunting down other visionary artists, but none come as close as your friend. I can feel it in my bones, naturalism will be the new artistic revolution!”
“I’d love to hear all about it,” I chuckled. “On one condition: stop with that ‘mademoiselle’ nonsense. Familiarity goes both ways, Émile.”
“You pose an excellent point, Anaïs.”
After that encounter, we had lunch together in a nearby restaurant. Luckily, I had been getting better at managing my bloodlust, so I only had to excuse myself once, with some lame line about ‘powdering my nose’ or whatever. We talked about his work, mostly. He asked about Vincent a couple times, but didn’t pry. He probably thought it was some lover’s quarrel, and I couldn’t exactly correct him on that. The truth was too complicated.
On the days leading up to my ‘date’ with Vlad, I steered clear of the mansion, as well as all the places in the city the residents liked to frequent. Meeting any of them, whether it was accidental or not, would have raised suspicion. I spent a large part of my time in the townhouse, reading and playing with Puck. Will came in and out and mostly went about his business as usual, making me feel like a bit of a housewife. I hated it, but it gave me the chance to focus on my academic research.
After almost a week of uneventful boredom, the day has finally arrived. William woke me up with a curt knock on the door, telling me to get ready. He said he had rehearsal today and would drop me off near the flower shop.
The carriage ride is awfully quiet. Finally, my patience with William reaches its limit and I snap, nudging his leg with mine.
“What’s going on with you lately? I thought you’d want me to get along with Vlad.” I kick my legs up onto his lap, hoping the familiar gesture will provide some comfort. “You know, since you introduced me to him and all...”
“Right,” he mutters. That tone is not like him at all.
“Seriously, what is it?” I nag him further, but he just responds by pushing my legs off of his lap. “Will, come on. Talk to me.”
“This is where we must part ways.” The annoyed retort never makes it out of my mouth, as I realize the carriage has come to a halt. How convenient. I scoff. “Follow the main street and turn left at the statue,” Will continues. “Thou knowst where to find me after, but I shall be finished with the troupe in three hours.”
There is no time to argue, so I jump off the carriage and stare at him through the open door.
“Bye, William,” I finally sigh, closing it shut, and knock on the side, signalling the driver to move. William lazily waves me goodbye, but the usual glow of amusement does not shine in his eyes this time.
“Whatever,” I mumble to myself, turning away from the road once he’s gone. “He’s just being a brat.”
Despite the pleasant weather and the morning sun, I feel uneasy as I walk. I follow Will’s directions, but stop when the flower shop comes into view. Pressed against the corner, I take a deep breath and shake my head, mentally readying myself for the negotiation that is to come. I am in way too deep now, there is no turning back.
With my brave face on, I finally emerge from behind the stone wall. My steps are certain, purposeful, and I hope that my fear is overshadowed by the appearance I am projecting: a woman on a mission.

I drew Elle DeVampiro!
I really love the Vampires Pack for The Sims 4. There is more lore and mystery than you might think. I will make a number of theories on the Vampires pack, and so this will be part 1!
The first mystery, is that of the woman in red and the dark gray vampire guy who can be seen in a lot of the renders for the pack, as well as in the trailers for the pack. However, they do not appear in the game.
I personally have a theory, that this was intentional. Hear me out;
In the build/buy mode, there were quite few paintings that came with the pack (not counting wall decorations such as cracks and spiderwebs). One of these paintings however, is a set of pictures of a said ‘family’. The name of this painting is “Ancient Family Portraits”.
Tumblr media
When looking at the pictures, you might notice that two of the sims that appear on the painting, strongly resembles Inna Cents and Vlad Bloodvein. Now, here’s where things get mysterious.
See, there is a household in the gallery, released by Maxis, called ‘The Noble Vampires’. This household consists of Inna Cents, Vlad Bloondvein and Elle DeVampiro.
Elle, however, doesn’t bear any physical resemblance to the third sim in the painting, other than their clothes. So...who is the woman in red? Was she replaced by Elle? Or better yet, is she Elle?
Well, since they both were in the same trailer at the same time, we can conclude that they are not the same person. So then who is she?
The description for the painting suggests that for one, they are a family ((are you telling me they are related ??)) and that they might look familiar. Inna and Vlad B. look familiar, but not the woman in red.
Another painting that brings questions to mind, is a full-body sized painting of Vladislaus (((which is also exactly what you want in your house: a full-body sized painting of your creepy neighbor)))
Anyways, on the first swatch, only Vladislaus himself is portrayed, so the description only describes Vladislaus. But if you click on the other swatches, there will be a picture of Inna holding a bouquet of flowers, and another of Inna and the previously mentioned dark gray man who appeared in renders and trailers.
Tumblr media
So...was he also a noble vampire? Perhaps Inna knows him? So what exactly happened to these two vampires? Maybe it was all intentional? Maybe one of them made a mistake so bad that they had to change their image and appear different than before, perhaps out of shame.
Whatever the reason, I would love to hear your theories! Also stay tuned for part 2 >:3

Ok so, I just watched Vlad's route preview thingy for Ikevamp.
[SPOILERS MAYBE? ITS MOSTLY ME SPECULATING BUT STILL]
So I can't speak or read Japanese, and I heard a lot of phrases that I recognized. I'm like 50% sure I know what half of them meant. So I decided to torture myself and speak the phases into google translate
(╯ರ ~ ರ)╯︵ ┻━┻
But anywho.
The first thing we hear him say is:
真っ白な雪が
それからはい運命たち
この世界で君は
俺を見つけた
Which when all put together by Google means:
"Pure white snow
Then yes fate
You in this world
Found me"
We see a portrait of a woman that looks vaguely like MC. So I'm thinking maybe, somehow Vlad has been searching for her (or who he thinks she is)
-----
Then there's his introduction line that I didn't translate, but he probably basically introduced himself and then we hear him ask what her name is.
------
Then we see Vlad holding her face and there's roses and it's pretty:
君が こんなに近くにいた
"You were so close"
それなよ女とかした (I'm not sure if this is what he said but it means "That's a woman" so yeah)
もう一度させて
"Let me do it again" (Talking about the kiss I think)
So that's sweet and all. BUT THEN THE HUMMING :
俺は今作は愛してる狂おしいほどに
Which means "I love this work, [so] crazy."
The next thing is something that caught my eye the most. We see crazy, bloody Vlad, and calm, melancholy Vlad, split into different sides. One's has a darker feel, the other light and calm.
I think Vlad has a split personality. The nice gentle Vlad, and then hum while he kills you psycho Vlad.
But anyway.
We see MC holding Sad Vlad™ and he says:
そのためには
"For that reason"
必ず未来を変える
[I'll(?)] "Be sure to change the future."
Then there's a pause and he says something really damn fast. I wanted to cry after trying to figure that whole line out and I just cannot!😭
Sorry. Child Vlad!!!:
約束
[You?] "Promised"
いつけるって
"To come"
{Or he may have said- 死体つけるって. Which means "Take a corpse" but that didn't seem right)
だから信じてだめだ
"So I don't believe it"
Door closes and opens again and they in roses again:
So here he either says:
おいで いけ
"Come on"
Or
置いていけ
"Leave it" but I think the first one is correct.
Then I couldn't keep up or pronounce anything but he did say something about
永遠に "eternity" and I think he's inviting (or just making) her to become a vampire too.
Then he says the whole 'I'll take your heart and soul' bla bla bla (Aka Kris.exe has stopped working no more google translate)
SO final thoughts?
I think Vlad lost someone (Either to death or they just ditched him) and he's looking for them. MC looks like the lady he's looking for, aaaaannnd he's probably got a split personality.
(Watch all of this be so far from the actual plot😂)
ALSO, I know I could have spent more time trying to figure out what he was saying and comparing it to the words on the screen. But I... Don't want to...I paused, slowed down, and copy pasted so many times that I am done with google stupid translate for a long time!

Jason Chatfield.
Bio: I grew up in the far flung suburbs of Perth, in Western Australia, and used to spend my paper route money on MAD Magazines (I cheaped-out and stole my dentist’s waiting room issues of the New Yorker. I think I was the only kid who looked forward to going to the dentist).
I moved to New York in 2014 and started pitching to the mag in person. I’m not sure Bob liked me, so I went back to pitching via email. Then I went in on his last day and finally sold my first piece. I feel like it was his final f—k you to the magazine. “Here! Have a Chatfield!”
Tumblr media
Find this print here!
The cartoon was a goofy play on Vlad the Impaler.
I didn’t sell to the magazine again until last month, but I’ve had a handful sold as dailies. And I’m published in MAD often, so they’ve clearly done away with any of their standards.
When I’m not drawing gag cartoons I write and draw a syndicated legacy strip called Ginger Meggs which I took over 10 years ago. It’s been around since 1921 and now appears daily in 34 countries. He’s kind of an Australian version of Dennis the Menace, except he predates him by about 30 years.
Tools of choice: For drawing/roughs, I use a Prismacolor Turquoise clutch pencil with a red lead and try to find some paper with a little bit of tooth. The mixed media pads at Blick do the trick nicely.
Tumblr media
I ink using a Uni-ball Vision Elite Stick Roller Ball Pen… or a Pigma Micron 03.
Tumblr media
DO NOT use the Uni-Ball Vision Rollerball Pens, Fine Point (0.7mm) if you’re traveling. They explode on planes. And ruin your copy of The New Yorker.
Tumblr media
For a wash, I just use watercolor and whatever brush is lying around. Nothing fancy. There’s a scanning app on my phone called “Adobe Scan” which does a nice job of scanning line-art into a PDF when I’m out of the studio and need to email in a quick rough.
I use a Wacom Mobilestudio Pro for finished artwork. I like to get out of the studio and work from a bar or restaurant, so it helps that I can take that with me. I use a little glove that I got on Amazon so I don’t grease up the screen, and the felt-tip nib that comes in the pen-holder makes the friction between the stylus and the screen more like pencil on paper. Unfortunately, they’re not waterproof, as I found on a recent vacation…
youtube
My wife plays piano and sings at bars around the city so I’ll often sit at the bar during her sets and draw. Digital/Traditional depends on what deadlines are most pressing. (She has a weekly residency in Astoria —if anyone’s interested in going, let me know!)
A lot of people email me for advice about tablets —I’ve been trialling/demo-ing Wacom products for 15 years— I think they’re great. If you’re married to doing stuff by hand but want to colour digitally, you can get a decent tablet without going broke. Depends on your workflow.
Writing Desk: My wife and I were living upstairs in 5A when my neighbour in 4B died. He was a brilliant poet and had an incredible old writing desk. It’s the only thing that was left in the apartment, so I’m looking after it ’til his grandson moves in at the end of our lease. I work for countless hours at this old thing. It’s beat up, but I’ve patched it together enough that it won’t collapse and bury me mid-brushstroke. I’ve stuck a few of my favourite toons on the top of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tool I wish I could use better: My brain. It really is a sack of cats. Whenever I want to sit and do work, it clocks off. Then it comes up with a pearler of an idea at 3 in the morning when I’m trying to sleep. I write it down in my phone, but autocorrect makes it indecipherable by morning.
I like working with my writer friend, Scott. We both do comedy at night and have developed a nice short-hand. We also seem to have the same library of references and can build on each others’ premises, which tames my sack-of-cats.
Tumblr media
Tool I wish existed: The Deadline Extender.® I’ve never missed a deadline, but that said… an extra 3 or 4 minutes to allow for a terrible wifi connection, or a errant scanner wouldn’t go astray.
Also: The Deadline Extender® PREMIUM: Let’s you go back in time to when you were procrastinating and slap yourself in the face. $30 p/month.
Tricks: Ok, well. This is going to sound a bit Dalton Trumbo, but bear with me: I do my best work…in the bath. The most productive 3 hours of my week are during Scotchbath Sunday; an immoveable chunk of time on Sunday evening whereby I lock myself in the bathroom, run a bath, lug my drawing stuff onto a bit of wood that sits over the bath, and just write and draw. Nothing else. I write weeks worth of my syndicated comic strip (Ginger Meggs), I write New Yorker cartoons, scribble up roughs for dailies— and when I feel like I’ve earned it (usually 2 hours in) I tap the side of the bath three times, and my wife peels herself from her piano and I unlock the door to a nice big glass of scotch. It’s a hell of a carrot on a stick to work towards when you’re stuck. (PS. Lest you think I’m some kind of Don Draper-era misogynist; the scotch reward part was her idea. I think she realized it keeps me in the bath and out of her way.)
Anyway. It’s a great way to switch gears creatively. It’s like being on an aeroplane. No wifi, no phones — just the work you need to get done. Get involved. #ScotchBathSunday.
Oh! And if I get my deadlines done for the week, I have a small budget for a solo lunch somewhere where I can eat cheese and draw. I really didn’t know cheese ’til I moved to America. (And yes, I’ve already been to Wisconsin. Good Lord.)
Tumblr media
Tips? I always tell younger artists to not even think about touching a drawing tablet until they’ve learned to draw by hand first. Otherwise they’ll always be drawing away, knowing they have the insurance of the CTRL+Z key at their disposal if they screw up a line. That’s not a good habit to have when you’re working to a deadline. But, once you do know how to draw, by all means dive head-first into the digital realm. It’s incredible. Procreate, Sketchbook or Photoshop are all great.
Misc: One of the hangovers from working in advertising illustration is that I’ve had to be a bit of a chameleon style-wise for the last 15 years and haven’t allowed myself to just settle into one style. Lately, I’ve just decided to say “Bugger it!” and try and find a loose, consistent style that I’m comfortable with, that’s an apt conduit to my silly ideas.
Tumblr media
I always loved George Booth’s line, and his ability to create a scene with so much movement but just at the right moment in time. Also Sam Gross’ dark, hilarious cartoons with perfect line-economy. And I’d give my left arm (I draw with my right) to know how Barry Blitt has so much control with his washes…
Tumblr media
Chatfield’s portrait of Sam Gross
While I’m geeking out, I love seeing younger cartoonists find their feet and thrive in a style that just feels like they’re speaking to you— Ellis J. Rosen, Sofia Warren, Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell, Jason Katzenstein, Amy Kurzweil, and a seemingly endless list of talented younger artists who are putting in the work are a big inspiration.
Tumblr media
I know it should be Steig or Thurber or Addams, but my favourite cartoonist is Sergio Aragones.
I was always so enamoured of MAD growing up and studied the lines of Jack Davis, Mort Drucker, Al Jaffee and the Usual Gang of Idiots. I remember being so frustrated I couldn’t even come close to getting my work to look like theirs, but I think I found a style somewhere in between when I fell short.
I think Wil McPhail’s poses are masterful, and I wish I knew how how the hell he did that. One day I’ll trudge up to England and knock on his door to ask him. I find myself doubled-over at John Cuneo’s Instagram, and Ed Steed’s absurdly funny gags. I have a slew of toons I’ve torn out of years’ worth of magazines and taped to my studio wall, or my zillion year-old writing desk. I’m constantly humbled by how generous and welcoming the existing crop of New Yorker cartoonists have been to a goofy Aussie immigrant — Joe Dator, Matt Diffee and Pat Byrnes, Mort Gerberg and an ever-growing list of prolific, talented cartoonists who make the 99% weekly rejection tolerable.
I’ve made some of my closest friends and have been lucky enough to meet my cartooning heroes through the National Cartoonists Society. I got to spend a lot of time with Sergio at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival in the UK last year which made my year. We were signing together for a whole afternoon and I spent more time geeking out with him than signing.
Tumblr media
Okay. Enough drooling. Sorry.
I’m a fan of cartoonists.
Website, etc. I have a weekly podcast where I throw around ideas for New Yorker cartoons with a fellow comedian and writer, Scott Dooley. It’s called “Is There Something In This?” It’s a bit of fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we do take the art of writing gags very seriously. It’s an extremely difficult skill to master, and we’re virtually zygotes at it. We have lots of listeners now, which is bewildering. Talking about drawing is like dancing about architecture, but here we are. Anyway you can find it on iTunes or wherever you waste time listening to podcasts.

My website is jasonchatfield.com and my comedy stuff is up at jasonchatfieldcomedy.com  ( I’ve been doing stand-up comedy for 11 years. If anyone wants to come see a show, hit me up! I’ll put you on the door). My instagram is @jasonchatfield. I’m still trolling the British chap who has the @jasonchatfield handle on Twitter to no avail. To that end, I’m @jason_chatfield on Twitter.
If you want more art supplies in your life, A Case for Pencils is on Instagram and Twitter.  You can also find me, Jane (the person who created/edits this blog), on Twitter here, which is where I stick the paintings that I’ve been doing instead of interviewing people consistently (I needed to balance working on other people’s work and my own work!). Oh, and If you’d like to support this blog, which is always very appreciated, there are many different ways to do so, which you can find here!

My thoughts on BBC Dracula
This got longer than I expected so here’s a read-more.
Episode 1:
The jump-cuts reminded me of Jekyll, another show by Stephen Moffat
In one scene of Dracula biting Jonathan, he looked like Christopher Lee=nice!
I loved the whole scene at the convent when Dracula tore his way through the wolf and Agatha teased him with her blood. But as cool as the transformation was, it seemed like a really impractical way to shapeshift if he has to go through that every time.
Why was Dracula suddenly so willing to kill Jonathan after finally catching up to him?
Self-digs at vamp lore: they work but no-one knows why and say they don’t make sense and are ridiculous.
Lots of parallels with Sherlock:
The theme song sounds like the Sherlock one slowed down.
the spiral staircase in Castle Dracula looks like the one from Sherlock’s mind palace.
“Help me” gets reflected in the window like “Get Sherlock”
“Johnny, there is no baby” = Moriarty convincing people he’s Richard Brooke and Sherlock’s a fake, also a hint that Rosie isn’t real?
Dracula convincing Jonathan to write the letters and manipulating him like Moriarty with the people strapped to the bombs and Eurus with the prison guards
Jonathan gets trapped with a baby by a woman who can get out of her prison like John getting trapped in the well by Eurus (that baby looked really freaky, btw)
Dracula’s blasé attitude to death like Moriarty, calls Jonathan “Johnny”
“I have a detective acquaintance in London” really?!
Sister Agatha is basically fem!Sherlock
Mina is Molly, sort-of helpful to Agatha but mostly useless
Episode 2:
Loved all the food puns
He’s such a messy eater, no wonder he needs to feed on so many people.
When Olgaren asks Piotr/Martin what he thinks of his first time at sea, Martin should have said, “needs paprika.”
Did they really need to add a token secret gay couple just to kill them off? I know Dracula killed everyone anyway but that seemed like fake representation.
How did he get to England from the box without his home soil?
Not too much to say on this one. It was a fun locked-room murder mystery with lots of food puns and a fresh take on part of the story that never gets elaborated on. I initially didn’t like the modern ending but warmed up to the idea in the third episode.
More Sherlock similarities:
Captain Anderson, I mean, Sokolov
Utilizing a mind palace to solve a mystery (Agatha finding out who the passenger in no. 9 is and the case of the abominable bride)
the chessboard
Agatha realizing she’s in a dream
 Episode 3:
How does he know it’s a camera?
Why does he care about the girl smiling so much?
He knows how to use a video camera, tv remote, and faucet but not a refrigerator or electric lights?
Why is the knowledge he assimilates from his victims selective? Plot device.
Is he scared of the sun because he drinks from people who believe that, like with the crosses?
Is his immediate knowledge of using a phone from Bob?
Why did they transition to another shot of the portrait, couldn’t they have just zoomed in?
Jack Seward’s Shining wallpaper
Why is Lucy so superficially shallow?
Did he get the name for cancer from Bob too? He’s just pulling knowledge out of his ass at this point.
He’s had cancerous blood before but only reacted strongly to Zoe’s?
Super-secret organization can’t come up with a better password and gives him a wifi-enabled device?
How did he figure out wifi, skyping and hiring a lawyer over the internet that fast?
Wtf?! Why did Zoe drink his blood?!
Did her drinking his blood make her possessed by Agatha’s blood ghost?
Why so many time skips?
Why does Dracula need a treadmill? He’s an immortal vampire with supernaturally enhanced stamina, he doesn’t need to exercise. He looks weird in work-out clothes.
Lucy’s so chill with Dracula being a vampire and feeding on other people.
What happened to appearing to her in her sleep as mist?
What’s with her blasé attitude towards death?
“Children of the night. What music they make.” is supposed to be about wolves, not not-quite vampires knocking on their coffins in a cemetery.
Wtf is with the zombie kid?
Renfield needs to be weirder than just eating one fly in the car.
Does Lucy’s gay friend have a name? He didn’t die so... yay, I guess?
Lucy’s a social media influencer?
I don’t like the floor in Zoe’s hospital room.
Wow, Quincey’s a dick.
I don’t know how I feel about Lucy’s cremation rather than her book death.
Okay, so I was right Zoe drinking Agatha’s blood ghost.
Why does Dracula see himself as old and Lucy see herself as beautiful in mirrors?
They burn up Buffy-style? That’s not how it happens in the book. If that how it works, how could Dracula wear Jonathan’s skin? Did he flay him then stake him?
I like that Zoe’s shirt is the same color blue as Agatha’s dress.
The painting of the Sun is really neat.
Wow he really is a drama queen, huh.
Not sure I understand the explanation as for why Dracula couldn’t be in sunlight.
Love the visual of him walking to the sun through the crosses of the window.
The cancerous blood wasn’t deadly to him before it was Zoe’s or was it just that he didn’t drink enough to have that effect?
Well that was a dumb ending; he realizes the sun can’t hurt him so he immediately commits suicide? No, that’s stupid. Why the sex dream for Zoe? There’s no attraction there from either her or Agatha so what’s the point?
Zoe hosting Agatha’s blood ghost shares another slight similarity to Jekyll: Dr. Jekyll’s descendant is married to a woman who turns out to be the clone of Dr. Jekyll’s maid.
I liked that both Agatha and Zoe tried to beat Dracula right before they died in a fiery explosion.
Even More Sherlock comparisons:
Harker foundation is UNIT/Sherrinford prison/Moriarty’s holding cell
Blood-fueled deductions about people, good thing Sherlock’s human
“You don’t have to talk a lot of shit.” “You know, people don’t usually say that to me.” “Yeah, you kill them before they can. Basically, you’re blocking people.”= “Brilliant.” “People don’t usually say that to me.” “What do they usually say?” “Piss off.”
All in all, I enjoyed the series more than I expected to. The first episode felt like a season recap, maybe because it was told mostly through flashbacks. The second one felt the strongest because it was a part of the book that no one adapts and the writers got the chance to fill in the gaps however they wanted. The third episode started off all right but had a weak ending.
What they left out/changed from the book: so, so much.
What they left out/changed that I can remember:
garlands of garlic help ward off vampires
staking only immobilizes them, to kill them you need to stake them first then behead them
Dracula is affected by sunlight
He is not Vlad Dracula Tsepes, prince of Wallachia (auto-correct wanted me to write Appalachia)
Renfield is way more obsessed: “The blood is the life,” eats food chains
Mina and Lucy are great friends
Lucy kills children to eat and is seen wandering graveyards in her burial dress
Dracula has more control over himself when faced with blood
He’s not a snarky jerk
Neither is Quincey
Obviously they genderbent Dr. Van Helsing
“Children of the night. What music they make.” is supposed to be about wolves, not not-quite vampires knocking on their coffins in a cemetery!
I’m sure there’s more but that’s what I can remember off the top of my head. It’s been a few years since I’ve read the book.
