Best and worst match in the NEL so far

My answer is going to be greatly influenced by what characters are in the teams that BM was facing and my personal preferences so this will be biased as fuck. Also, I think it’s a little hard to evaluate because the circumstances were so different for each one re Isagi’s role in the team, but here's my take.

The Barcha match: Way too short. A HUGE plus was simply Bachira being there though (and Otoya's scrawny ass as well). Also, I really like Lavinho. I think Barcha as a team has great vibes and swagger and I'm really sad we didn't get to see more of them.

Obviously, it's understandable why this game was so short - it just served as an introduction to how this arc was gonna work and who Kaiser is. Still, I wish there had been more...

The MC Match: The length and pacing of this game were great. Unfortunately, I can’t evaluate this match very fairly because I simply do not give a single shit about Nagi or Reo, and since so much of the focus was on them, I just didn’t enjoy this game that much. One big plus was Chigiri being a baddie and the amazing ending with the whole “how does it feel to be a clown in my story” spiel. Also, I liked seeing more of Noa and learning about his attitude towards Isagi.

I think Isagi's and Kaiser's relationship/rivalry was explored so well during this match. Additionally, and very, very importantly, I really liked seeing Isagi... struggle. I liked seeing him fail and lose his shit and be desperate and angry. It added stakes and anticipation, and really left me as a reader wondering what he was going to do next. It was great.

The Ubers Match: I love Ubers as a team because many of the characters I like are on it + Lorenzo was a great new addition + the team has a great dynamic.

The one huge fucking minus was that during this game things started going well for Isagi to an almost cartoonish degree. The flip from "Isagi is struggling! How will he ever beat Kaiser and become the best? The suspense is killing me!" to "Isagi can do everything and everything goes his way. C'mon, he's the main character," was a little too fast for me; I kind of didn't enjoy it. He became too successful too fast. I hope the PxG game fixes this somehow.

What I did enjoy immensely however was whatever the fuck was happening with Kaiser and his character development. Like all true Kaiser fans, I want to see him fail and cry and scream and throw up, and we actually got that here! Here's to more of that in the next game. 🥂

To summarize: I have no idea bro. I think that overall the MC game was probably the best one pacing, story-telling, and stakes-wise, but, again, I didn't personally enjoy it that much simply because of who is on the MC team. I liked reading through the Ubers game the most but I don't think it was the best writing-wise.

praises from (some) bllk boys as bfs — a rating list. very objective. very serious. very canon.

chigiri: casual and very often, but means every word of it. often accompanied by a pat on the head or a forehead nuzzle. very proud of you and very loving, somehow feels like a bro though. 9.8/10 (if only he puts that shoujo manga aura sleeping potential he has. come on pretty boy.)

reo: hype man. good bf man. perfect man. will get the bouquet, will get you in his arm and spin you, will kiss you. public relationship? good, means he can do it in public. secret relationship? good, you get extra long kisses + cuddles. honestly no notes. is probably more proud of you than you are of yourself for whatever it is. 10/10.

isagi: keep the essay™ on how you are great in his head and usually go for the straight forward basic "you are amazing". if excited, you get a full body hug, if in boy next door mode you will get a besotted smile. both are good in their own way, just different expressions of genuine happiness. 8/10 (will add another 2 points if this is a subjective list)

sae: execution wise, need improvement. but because praise coming from him is like a black pearl or a blue moon during a supermoon and a lunar eclipse—the feeling of elation makes up for it. curt, short, and honestly a testament of how good the end result of your action is. but, objectively: 6/10 —adding a point because usually there are also head pats. 3 if not.

rin: is abysmal. please stop glaring because most people would translate it as them fucking up. but as his significant other, he will scoff and look at you three seconds too long then probably pat your shoulder once. probably a "so you can do it huh" if you are lucky. 3/10 way too constipated itoshi junior. (if he got through that teenage angst of his, 7. higher chance of "good job" because you are his favorite)

bachira: shouts. loud. very proud. another no notes. you get pats, kisses, hugs, kisses, and the list goes on. probably will have to get physically separated from you. if his mom is there too then will cheer along with him. afterward will take you somewhere as a celebratory date—it could range from buying a snack from the convenience store or a straight-up meal. honestly, you choose. 10/10.

bonus round: nagi — surprisingly 8/10. will immediately hug you and look so excited with wide open eyes and all like he just won something. ;; kaiser — 3/10 swallow that pride more and give something more than "see? you can do it" but extra point because high chance he gives you tough love motivation beforehand;; aryu — very osha before and after. very osha praises. osha / 10. no notes. ;; anri — miss gf will either cheer or cry out of happiness depending on how big your success is. if it's the latter please do your duty first. 7.5/10 please stop crying.

itoshi sae raises his eyebrows as soon as the words leave your lips. you notice he is about to leave your shared apartment and you give him a soft kiss; "don't go too hard on yourself, my love". while the rest of his expression remained the same, the way his eyebrows shoot up was so obvious you noticed it immediately. sae wrapped one of his arms around your waist and pulled you closer. 'don' worry, baby... can you call me like that again?'

itoshi rin would never expect you to say that. he was having some struggles; his body was exhausted, but he felt like he didn't practice enough that day. when you found him in the treadmill, not even five minutes after he arrived home, your heart immediately stopped. he looked like he could pass out at any moment. "are you okay, my love?!" you exclaimed, running up to him. he tripped softly, making you even more worried, and his wide eyes looked at you. 'w-what?' his breathless self held your hands that pressed against his sweaty face. 'i'm...your love?'

isagi yoichi have the sweetest pet names for you. he's always calling you cute things, a big smile on his face whenever he does it, so you thought you could give him a soft pet name too. that day, he and his friends organized a small meet up and your boyfriend seemed so hyped for it. before he left, he walked to you and pressed kisses all over your face, his arms wrapping you in a big bear hug. "have fun, my love!" you murmured between giggles. the smile he gave you was enough to make you melt in his embrace. he pressed a kiss on the tip of your nose and 'i love you so much!'

bachira meguru gives you the biggest and brightest smile as soon as the pet name leaves your lips. "my love, can you come here?" you say and, when you blink, he is immediately jumping in front of you, almost doing a little dance out of happiness. before you can say what you wanted to, he throws himself in your arms, burying his face on your neck. 'my love? hm, i really reaaaaally like that! i am your love, after all!'

calling michael kaiser with any pet name wouldn't be a good idea. that man already have a big inflated ego, his beloved partner giving him such sweet names would only inflate it even more. "my love! you were amazing today!" you say when he arrives home after a game. the smirk that he wore on his lips grew larger as he hugged you tight against his body. 'of course. your husband will always be the best man in the field. can i get a kiss as a reward, my love?'

First off, can we just talk about how fucking AWESOME Kunigami was here???

I had no idea that I needed to see Charles interact with Raichi but this made me giggle

I really love that he’s going back to the video game analogies, it’s one of the things that had me really loving his character at the start and it’s something I like trying to write in when I’m working on Hiorin fics in my limited spare time

I didn’t expect him to have this little rivalry with Charles but it’s fun so I can’t complain

Plus the video game boss Charles is SO FUCKIN COOL

Rin deserves better in this game, I’m kinda sad that he’s taking a backseat rn because he’s one of my favourites

But I do love how annoyed he is with Charles-

The only one who seems to like the kid rn is Shidou, so it makes sense that Rin would be annoyed by him, given that he hates Shidou and Charles is like a mini version of him

I really hope we get “kill mode” Rin in this game, I wanna see him go absolutely wild (I kinda really don’t want Bastard to win this game, I think it’s high time Isagi’s plot armour runs out)

note: When I say hate, it's not that they're badly written, I just don't like their personalities, and if I was there, I'd probably beat them up. this is in no particular order

1. MICHAEL KAISER

YOU GUYS ARE GONNA EAT ME FOR THIS. everyone loves kaiser, but I don't see why. from the get-go, he was just some snobby little bitch. like you're telling me you like kaiser when he fully got Ness to wipe his hand after he touched isagi?? yeah, no. I understand the team revolves around him but like still come on kaiser just sit down pls. I will admit tho I see the hype, and he's kinda hot but STILL.

2. ALEXIS NESS

BEYOND THE KAISER HATE, FROM THE DEEPEST PART OF MY BODY, THERE IS A RAGING HATRED FOR NESS. he's such a big fat dick rider. I don't care what anyone says. no matter how you try to defend him, he just wants to receive it wide like rashford from kaiser (and NO, I'm not talking about football) we all know he falls asleep imagining scenarios of him and kaiser pls. maybe I don't like him bc he reminds me of ui ui from jjk (they're literally the same person), which would also explain why I don't like kaiser either. HES ACTUALLY THE NUMBER 1 KAISER GLAZER AND IT MAKES ME CRY LIKE SHUT THE FUCK UP PLEASE I BEG YOU. 3. IGARASHI GURIMU

I see nagi slander, I see isagi slander, and I see rin slander. never once have I seen igarashi slander. he's literally useless. Can we be real here. I don't like how he acts as if he's so good at football like HELLO?? like yeah, you got chosen for Blue Lock, so of course, he's better than the average person, but let's not forget he was rank 300 and was always the bottom rank. unless he has an awakening, there's no hope. can we also discuss his goofy ahh weapon 💀 like we got isagi with spacial awareness, kunigami with his power shot, chigiri with his speed, and igarashi casually coming along with his "Can't lose attitude." like yeah no shit dawg you can't lose if you're already at the bottom. everything is an L for him. he's already lost on about can't lose attitude pls escort yourself out. and I refuse to believe that this guy made it past naruhaya, imamura, and KUON?!?!?! nah I'll accept the first 2 but kuon had way too much potential (actually it's bc he's a traitor that he's gone but still.) I am convinced he was not chosen he just happened to be on the winning team each time bc there's no way anyone would pick that gnome.

Love that Isagi’s cooking right off the bat! I do feel bad Kaiser, but what did he expect when he’s up against Mr. “I don’t give a f*ck about that, what I desire the most is the moment I destroy you” ITOSHI RIN?!?!

This is so much hype I can’t asdfghjk. I wasn’t even this hyped when nagireo reunited.

This chapter reminds me of the scene when Hiruma and Ichiro were countering each other’s tactics in Eyeshield 21 *I can’t for the life of me find panels of that scene. It’s been a while, my memory is foggy, I need to reread the manga or rewatch the anime 🥹*

This chapter also reminds me of when Mahito, Todo and Yuuji had a three-way battle. The tension is real 👀

On another news, I noticed that Hiruma and Isagi have the same first names. Hiruma Yoichi can be interpreted as demon in broad daylight, whereas Isagi Yoichi is world’s rightful or world’s purest.

Hilarious! But I see the similarities they have when they’re on the court.

In no particular order

Blue Lock (Manga), it’s so silly and unserious with how over the top and occasionally edgy it is but it also unironically has some really good character writing and some amazing character development. Isagi’s easily my favorite protagonist in Shounen, in any other shounen he’d be a villain. A huge shoutout to the Isagi and Kaiser rivalry for being so well written, easily one of the most entertaining rivalries there is. But I also like how the manga does a good job at showing different types of rivalries with the four main rivals, you have the friendly rival (Nagi), classic rival (Barou), out of reach rival (Rin) and mutual obsession rival (Kaiser). It’s also just such a hype manga, I’ve reread it multiple times and I always feel the hype on every reread. The art is also easily the best art in a weekly shounen currently coming out. The anime is good if you don’t care much about the animation quality dropping, I’d say at least the first three episodes are worth checking out before switching to the manga because of how well they set the tone and get you into the series.

Bungou Stray Dogs (Manga), there’s so much to analyze in BSD, when you get deep into BSD, you’re not just getting into BSD, you also end up getting into the light novels, you’re also getting into the authors the characters are based on. The characters have a lot of depth and are very interesting. It also has Fyodor, the most babygirl of babygirls. Not a fan of the anime after having read the manga tho, it has many pacing issues and outright dumbs down and ruins characterizations (Fyodor being the biggest victim of this).

Oshi no Ko (Manga and anime), I already loved the manga and holy shit the anime blew it out of the water. The animation, music and voice acting really liven up the entire experience. I absolutely love the themes explored and seeing the life of idols and actors. Since Oshi no Ko is best experienced completely blind, I’m not gonna say much more. Just know that it easily has the best premiere episode I’ve ever seen in an anime. I’ve also listened to Idol way too many times, I outright know the lyrics of the opening because of how much it played in karaoke. I also really love Ai Hoshino, I’ve ordered so much merch of her and even cosplayed her last week at a con.

Vinland Saga (Anime), character development at its peak. The writing is absolutely top notch. Shout out to Askeladd for being such an amazingly well written character. There’s so much depth to the characters and the fans weren’t lying when they were praising the writing in farmland because Thorfinn’s character development in that arc is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I’m also a huge fan of the openings, I’ve been listening to them every day. I’ve started buying the manga but I haven’t started reading yet, so I don’t want to include the manga yet.

Kuroko no Basket (Anime), it is so hype, it is so over the top, it’s so stupid, it’s so unrealistic and I absolutely love it. It also has the best female cast in any sports anime I’ve watched, they’re not stuck as just moral support and fanservice, they actually play an active and important role in helping the boys improve. I love the philosophy of the characters and getting to see the point of view of geniuses at the top who all have different perspectives of what it’s like being among the best. Kuroko and Kagami are also one of my fav friendships in anime, they have amazing chemistry and work so well as the main duo. I also love that Kuroko is the protagonist, because from his point of view, it’s not just about winning the tournaments, it’s also being able to save his former teammates from themselves.

House MD (TV series), it’s just so damn entertaining, I usually love doctor shows to have in the bg but House MD is unironically really good. It has genuinely good character writing and characters with a lot of depth. I’m a huge fan of asshole main characters. Hugh Laurie’s performance as House is also amazing, no other actor could pull off the charisma required to make such an asshole so likable. He has amazing chemistry with the other actors which really makes it feel more real despite all the absurdity happening all the time (like how House didn’t get fired on episode 1 is a mystery science can’t answer).

Durarara (Anime), easily has my favorite introduction arc out of any anime, it’s a bit confusing at the start but once you get used to it, it’s amazing. Every character in Durarara is badass and I love their interactions and how they work as an ensemble cast instead of having one main character. The city of Ikebukuro feels so alive thanks to all the personalities living there. Izaya Orihara also absolutely steals every scene he’s in, he is such a little shit and I love him, especially when he interacts with Shizuo. I’ll never forgive Shizaya for permanently damaging my brain into thinking that two guys wanting each other dead is peak romance.

Love Live (Anime), I’m including all the series. Love Live is the only anime to make me feel strong emotions every single episode. It’s just such a feel good show, it makes me so happy. I love all the girls, I wish they were real so they could be my friends. It’s not the most well written franchise but it more than makeups for it with how enjoyable it is. The VAs also do an amazing job bringing the characters to life and are so talented. The music is also really good and there’s such a huge discography that you’re guaranteed to find a few songs you’ll like. My favorite series has to be Sunshine tho, it just holds such a special place in my heart since it was what was coming out when I first got into the franchise and I can’t listen to the first opening or ending without being moved.

Bocchi the rock (Anime), Bocchi is just like me fr. I can relate to her struggles with social anxiety so much, I deadass almost cried in the first episode when I realized I found a character who I could relate to when it came to social anxiety, usually there’s just shy characters in anime which I hate because of how unrelatable they are and just make shyness seem like a cute trait. Like nah man, the interacting with people makes me an awkward mess. BTR uses such creative animation to show what’s going on in Bocchi’s head and while it’s obviously exaggerated, it does genuinely sometimes feel like the world’s about to end when I interact with someone I don’t know. The rest of the cast is also very likable and have great chemistry together. BTR is easily my favorite slice-of-life anime and one of my favorite anime, I highly recommend it even if you’re not a sol fan (I’m not too keen on them personally).

Adding this guy to the carousel of blorbos in my brain. I like that his tarot schtick leads into him being obsessed with probability and data 🖤

He's needlessly antagonistic, but that's Blue Lock for you. All bets are off when it comes to football. I personally enjoy the shit talking.

My only criticism of Hiiragi's great characterisation in Episode Nagi is... what for? Solely to entertain? Besides that, there isn't much purpose to it. His bravado in this match will be short-lived. Chigiri, Barou and Nagi win. Hiiragi passes the second and third selection, but remains on the bench for the U20 match, and barely plays during the Neo Egoist league. A guy that interested in probability must be aware how unlikely he is to make the national U20 team for the World Cup.

One of Blue Lock's strengths is its engaging line-up of characters. Even when they're barely shaded tropes, you root for and against them. But on the flip side, due to the manga format and pacing, there simply isn't enough time to spend on these interesting side characters. They rarely become more than a once-off antagonist or joke.

Hiiragi gets this one time to shine, before Episode Nagi moves on. After that, he's resigned to being background fodder, alongside other interesting characters (Darai, Hayate and Niou from the original U20 line-up spring to mind). If we're lucky, Hiiragi might show up to annoy Nagi during the U20 match or while they're teammates in Manshine.

It's a frustrating criticism. On the one hand, Blue Lock and Episode Nagi have an amazing formula. They're fast paced action manga, with sharp dialogue and thought-provoking concepts. The main characters in the franchise (which I'd identify as Isagi, Bachira, Chigiri, Kunigami, Rin, Nagi, Reo, Barou and Kaiser) get consistent development and page time. Other characters... don't. At least, not beyond the resolution of a particular arc or problem they're facing (Yukimiya for example).

Other characters are engaging but static—Raichi is an example. Has he received any significant development since his Team Z days? He's more grounded and less boastful, I'll accept, but we don't know much about his inner thoughts or motivations. Kurona and Gagamaru also suffer from this.

Don't get me wrong: Blue Lock achieves a lot of depth through clever exposition and panelling. If they spent more time on character development, they'd risk sacrificing hype. That'd be a greater lost, imo.

In truth, I don't think anything should change. There's nothing wrong with entertainment for entertainment's sake.

If anything, I'm bemoaning the fact there isn't more time or more English-language content available for Blue Lock's side characters. What we get is so good, it makes me hunger for more. Maybe that's what I'm really bothered by. In which case, less a complaint than a compliment.

Speaking of side characters, this chapter also gave us the Zantetsu-Niko team up that was teased years back.

Niko appears to be avoiding the main action this match, but one thing I enjoyed: he briefed Zantetsu on what kind of plays to expect from Barou, Nagi and Chigiri. He also doesn't rely on Zantetsu to recognise these on sight—instead Niko does the watching and calls the next play out to him, using nicknames that Zantetsu will remember and understand.

Underrated moment that reinforces their character tropes to the reader: a watchtower, supporting the stupidly fast.

p.s. I'm sure you've been told this many times but your writing is just superb. I always get the sense that you seem to see so much more than most people do and oh it's amazing the way you're able to express that in writing. Reading your works sometimes would make me feel like crying even when there's nothing sad about it, if only because the things you write feel SO real. i just caught up in the recent chapters of bllk aND IM SO FCKING HYPED and at the same time it was a cliffhanger, im rooting for isagi to just sMASH IT ALREADYYYYYYY

oH YEAH AND BLLK ANIME???? i recently learn that there was a bllk anime and man i felt proud and sentimental for some reason cos i discovered this manga two years ago when haikyuu manga ended lol AND i rlly thought bllk wont interest me BUT NO i was hooked immediately when i read the first chapter and then isagi became my comfort character BUT THEN rin came in, it was love at first sight so he's now my favorite character in bllk and isagi is the second one HAHA ig thats the end of my rambling

Ang tagal namin nagstay kanina sa jollibee morayta potek hahahaha sobrang na hype kami sa got, puro usap namin mga theory and shit pano si kaiser kasi nag rewatch tapos nadamay na kami sa hypetrain nya hahahahahahha. Pero kainis pa rin kasi ano wala na naman choco mallows kingina ano inalis na ba???? Puro wala!!!! Huhuhuuhuhuhuhuh tapos ano share ko rin pala kasi ano natulog ako kanina ng mga 6am na huhu para tapusin yung manual tapos naresched na naman yung turnover sa monday na lang daw. Punta na lang daw islander sa school haaaay ang bait nman ng client huhu thankzu alyssa ikaw na talaga nag adjust dahil may seminar kami sa monday hahahaha.
