lineage and legacy are fun conversations but let’s talk about lineage through knighting. something about who deemed you worthy, who raised you up and brought you into knighthood, and what that says about the two of them; the knightee as a reflection of the knighter.

People really are missing the point of a character like Nettles. Being the a non-Valyrian dragonrider is what makes her different(in every positive definition of that word) and helps to serve a larger purpose in this story.
Valyrian blood is not special. It’s not needed to do great things. No one is special because of what family they happen to be born into.
A non-Valyrian Nettles shows that we are more than the circumstances which we are born into. Our birth, our names, and our very blood does not define us. Our actions are what do. We can overcome so much and rise to become absolutely extraordinary with a little bit of determination, patience, and a dash of help along the way. Nettles exemplifies that to the fullest extent.
She's more than a Black Valryian. She doesn’t have to be Valyrian. She shouldn’t have to be Valyrian.
She’s a survivor. She’s a final girl. She’s a Black low-born girl likely without a drop of dragons blood that tames a wild dragon with patience that killed countless others who had dragons blood. She survived the Dance where others high and low alike fell and perished to become a firewitch to the Burned Men.
Her legacy is immortalized in the history books(and by the Burned Men cause they still worship her) as one of the last(if not the last) dragonrider(s) before Dany all without having any known Valyrian ancestry.

[Sandor Clegane, to Beric Dondarrion:]"Say, make my horse a knight. He never shits in the hall and doesn't kick more than most, he deserves to be knighted. Unless you meant to steal him too." -Arya VII, aSoS
confirmation that stranger, the hound's vicious hellhorse, was classier than tywin lannister's warhorse, and that tywin's horse is especially unworthy of knighthood.

Okay, I know that I’m most likely gonna sound like a boomer, but hear me out:
Today’s HotD fans are a perfect example to me of what is wrong with a large proportion of modern audiences and the way people consume pop culture and media in general.
Ever since the premiere of the Season 1, I am becoming convinced that going beyond black-and-white perspective is… well, beyond capabilities of a growing number of folks out there.
Like, to so many of them it is either Team Black or Team Green.
Either Rhaenyra or Alicent. Or either Rhaenyra or Aegon. Either Daemon or Aemond. Either the Targaryens & the Velaryons or the Hightowers. Et cetera.
And once someone leans more to one side of the story, they just seem to idealize their team and completely demonize the other. Once you love Rhaenyra, she becomes the perfect heir, progressive and feminist, and Alicent becomes a cruel, back-stabbing b*tch and servant of patriarchy. And vice versa, once you prefer Alicent, she is a 100% victim of her circumstances with no agency whatsoever and Rhaenyra becomes a spoiled b*tch who is unable to make anything good out of her opportunities.
And it’s just so beyond the point for me.
People, this is not some football match where you pick your team and wish all the worst to the other.
It’s a fictional historical fantasy chronicle about a downfall of one of the greatest houses in the history of this universe. Nobody here is perfect to rule; in fact, every faction here is in one way or another bad and makes decisions that are just incompetent.
The whole point of George R.R. Martin writing about the Dance of Dragons story is to ask the question:
What happens when among all the heirs to choose from, none of them is good?
And let’s finally stick to that.

Opinions on Glendon Flowers/Ball
literally the living embodiment of how hedge knighthood as like. feudal class ascendancy through attaining their masculine ideal is built on violence against women. In the text, we get the dichotomy of Glendon son of Fireball with hero’s blood an honorable legacy and knight versus Glendon Flowers, son of a sex worker and brother to another because he trafficked his sister to “earn” his knighthood and he’s clawing at the legacy of a biological father who probably isn’t even his because it’s his only chance at money and glory.
But at the end of the day it’s not a dichotomy it’s the same guy. his daddy is the metaphorically the redgrass field as a concept this huge act of violence. his mother is a victim and she gave him this story of who his dad was as a way of giving him a way out and then he used that story to gain knighthood by making a victim out of his sister. and for what????? no one believes him, he gets tortured, and even though he unseats daemon ii all heroically what is left for him in life after the tournament? there’s a thousand Glendons running around Westeros because he’s less of a character and more of an indictment of Westerosi society. ouch

Twitter was a mistake. No, actually, Humanity was a mistake.
I’m not joking, this is the very first time that I saw white-on-white blood purity and classism in action.
I assume the user is white because of the obsession with having Nordic features for “Nordic” Targs...who actually model more from Mediterraean/Hellenistic cultures.

the worst take ive heard about rhaenyra being haughty is that they think she's a bad character for it. that she's rude for it or that she's horrible because of it.
mam,,,,,rhaenyra is based of empress matilda. the woman refused to be addresed as anything else but empress, even after remarriage. THE LITERAL WOMAN WHO BASICALLY FOUNDED THE PLANTAGANET DYNASTY.
her own children ALL used the last name fritzempress - son of the empress, rather than their father because their mother instilled in them that she was superior in rank than their father's who was a count. her son henry ii REFUSED to be called anything but fritzempress.
rhaenyra was meant to be haughty especially in adulthood. after being abused by alicent for so long, she moves to dragonstone and realizes her damn worth and self importance. that there are people who believe in her existance as heir, that people would fight for her claim and sign themselves to supporting it. of course she'll get confident of her identity and self importance, being the heir to the throne.
like, yeah. she would grow bold and haughty because she is overturning the thought of a male dominated society by being the FIRST FEMALE heir that was named that was not only princess in her own right to dragonstone but also the very fact that this is maintained all through her father's reign from the moment she was literally made heir - even with the fact that she had male siblings soon after. like of course she'll have so much pride for that.

When either team black and team Green stans talk about Nettles, no matter the sides they always ALWAYS dim down her character to the relationship she has with Daemon and Rhaenyra especially Daemon and it's just pathetic on both sides. Green stans see her character as a child that has been groomed and use it as a "Ah ha!" Moment against Daemon's character, Team black stans see her as the reason why their stupid ship falls apart and both sides are just completely blind to her character. She's so much more than that, this girl who grew up ALONE on the streets and KEPT HERSELF ALIVE for 17 years was OUTSMARTED a bunch of highly trained and skilled soilders and was able to claim a wild dragon, Sheepstealer is the ONLY wild dragon that someone was able to claim and Nettles, someone who wouldn't know anything about dragons, didn't grow up around the culture of dragons etc was able to do that SHE DID THE IMPOSSIBLE. And yet, they want to use her character for their petty arguments when she is so much more than that. Also, I find it hilarious when people think of her character as some naive little girl who gets easily manipulated. You know who was a naive little girl that got easily manipulated? Rhaenyra! Do you know what makes Rhaenyra and Nettles different? Rhaenyra is a sheltered, spoiled princess who grew up in the comfort of castle walls, whereas Nettles has seen the real world. She's apart. If it is, she's not living some sheltered life she's seen and been through a lot in her youth. I'm sorry for the rant, but I'm just tired of seeing her character get dumbed down and used by both sides. Nettles is smart and cunning BEFORE the dance and AFTER the dance. When she gets sent away and ends up on her own again (with the addition of Sheepstealer), she kept herself and her dragon alive and became an actual deity among men, she was smart enough to do that. She's a fighter, she's a survivor, she's brave, she's compassionate, she's smart, she's cunning, she's caring, she's so much more than just some groomed child/mistress.
Tumblr media
Pretty much. Which is why I’m just #team Nettles over here. It’s very clear that the vast majority of both teams don’t view her as an actual character in her own right and instead view her either as a nuisance(cue she’s only Daemon’s daughter and if you say otherwise, especially if you say Daemon loved her in a romantic capacity, I’ll say your a total liar and bury my head in the sand when you bring in facts) or a tool(cue poor Rhaenyra and Nettles, it’s so sad how Daemon groomed them both😔 Protect Nettles and the racist white woman who tried to kill her while she was possibly pregnant✊).
They do always try to dim her light and make her seem unimportant. Yeah, she’s a secondary character, but that’s never stopped the praise before. There are plenty of secondary players who have people who they actually care about and make up a ton of crap for.
However, with Nettles, even her accomplishments are picked over, stolen, and put on other characters with little backlash.
Like the anti-Blackness is permeating throughout their posts on her. Because if you want Nettles to be a Magical Negro to Rhaenyra’s overprivileged dumba** behind, her Mammy, view her as a little girl when she’s a grown woman, or else you’ll call her a Jezebel, let’s make no mistake, it’s misogynoir:
Tumblr media
The reason why I bring up her relationship with Daemon so much is because her romance with him is a part of her story. Taking that away(and trying to pawn her off to second-tier boys) only serves to limit her characterization and reinforce stereotypes. They don't think she's desirable. We don’t need more she’s a strong independent Black woman who doesn't need a man stories. Especially not ones where she’s dedicating her life to a psychotic white woman. That’s regressive asf.
Nettles’ character is worth way better analysis and actual praise than what she’s being given. While she may be a secondary character she’s actually important to the narrative.
She grew up a homeless orphan(which is why it’s so insulting when people try to act like she’s a freaking idiot who doesn’t know how to bathe herself yet she can tame a dragon🤦🏽‍♀️ Put most of the highborn women in her position and they wouldn’t survive a day in her shoes).
She’s the only known non-Valyrian dragonrider who claims a wild dragon. A prince who believes in Valyrian supremacy falls in love with her to the point where he’s willing to sacrifice his life for her.
Nettles is self-made. She’s self-taught. She’s loved for herself. She survives a freaking war and becomes a fire goddess/witch. Who wouldn’t want her? Who wouldn't want to be her? She’s the sh*t 😎
At this point, I’m over it. I’m waiting for her to get more than a handful of fans and to see her get a somewhat happy ending (unless the show wants to face major backlash by killing her off when she survives in the books, she’ll get her happy ending). The Dumbnyra and Fettles stans can go cry and voice their concerns about that🤷🏽‍♀️

Rhaena and Baela stand there in horror because they don’t have critical thinking skills or souls. Rhaena should have taken her mind off her dead mother and thought about these kids she just met and cared about them fighting amongst each other instead. Like the priority at this point is to read Aemond’s mind and become a mediator to boys she doesn’t know after she’s told to ride a pig. Since their dad disappeared and the scared girls grabbed the closest people near them now their “hanging out” with them after a funeral. Desperately wanting guilty by association. Wait until Daemon starts committing war crimes Rhaena and Baela will be on Westerosi trial. There’s plenty wrong with the way their written but it’s made very clear they’re shocked at what their witnessing with Jace, Lucerys, and Aemond fighting with a knife and rock. Thanks to the person that just sent this to me btw. How do people see two terrified children and come to the conclusion that they cheerlead violence? Adultification and vilifying and the other comments these innocent girls should apologize??🤧
