the big plant job today was unpot and untangle my Billietiae from the little atabapoenses I potted up with it and combine all the atabs and give them all new dirt.

roots were fucking crazy im glad i had Mom for help.

in all it’s glory *pat pat*

after^

gave them fertilizer and planty of room for roots to grow :)

now my children go! bring forth great massive fuckin dumb ass leaves for me to look at!

Today's rescue was a tiny philodendron atabapoense, from Bunnings. $5.67, taken down to $2 for poor condition. I trimmed some mangled leaves when I got him home and gave him a tiny support, and now we will see. For $2 I am absolutely willing to try to rehab a plant I kind of wanted. :>

Also got a kalanchoe goblin and a black pagoda lipstick vibe, the latter of which was also marked down - it was half the size of the other, so obviously the vines had been cut or broken. Very pleased!

Sorrows of a Plant Parent - I

You're sitting down having tea - in reality, a can of sparkling ribena that has been out of the fridge for several hours (probably the third can of the day) - and revolving between lying on the couch and the foldable cushion-bed, as you sort out the thoughts and minor household tasks through out that evening. Your lack of discipline at even picking a more respectable beverage of choice, seemed to justify the your self-loathe for your undignified ways, and perhaps even incompetence, as an adult.

You were feeling drained. Helpless. And above all, a little sunken in despair that your rest day is about to be over in another 12 hours...

Pilodendron pink, while saved, hasn't shown any new growth in 4 weeks after the emergency repot. Leaf feels soft, lifeless, cold, and limp. Underside seems yellowish. I'm worried it's going to die after hanging on for so long, so bravely.

Bottom few leaves of macodes petola curled outwards, appearing to engulf itself, recently. It seems to hate itself 😢.

Sanseviera moonshine. Came home to the sight of one plant falling apart. Not sure if it was the doing of a passing bird (pot was placed on the window ledge). Some part of the leaves were wet and gnats were partying.

The third of the Indian rubber fig plant rotted and died after the last watering 1 week ago. Who said to use 100% peat moss as potting mix? Yes! Google! *profanity laden titrade ensues* Upon pouring out the soil. It looked like a piece of clumpy, wet turd. Bye.

New Alocasia Melo starting to show same yellowing at the leaf tips like its predecessor - alocasia infernalis. Same fate? Humidity too low? Again? Do I accept this result that I cannot ever keep alocasias?

Others are doing fine. Philodendron atabapoense is thriving. The potting mix is a very lose and well draining. Monsterias are growing fast, they refuse the stake (ok you win, I wont force , as long as you live).

Not too pleased with the Staghorn fern though. The original coco coir mix seems to be falling out with the weight after each watering session, like a droopy boob.

All this is going to cause me severe headache and angina.

Now, PPP and macodes petola to receive more sunlight. Placed them near window; observe daily for changes / improvements.

Repotted moonshine using sand potting mix. Good luck or goodbye? Observe if this works.

Threw rubber fig away. RIP. One left.

Started humidifier regime for the melo. Almost nothing else I can do, other than 1) change potting mix. 2) keep it elsewhere.

The decision to have more dependents, each having unique needs, predispositions and challenges, naturally entails more responsibility and burden as a parent. More kids, be prepared to tackle more problems. This is only logical.

Also, you let go of trying to "force" them to be in a way you envisioned them to grow up to be, as long as they grow up healthy and happy.

My baby Philodendron Billietiae cutting is growing really well in my grow box! Since it’s experiencing high humidity the aerial roots are popping out looking for something to climb. I sorta wish it would always stay this tiny because obviously it is so adorable! Since my original mother Billie, and now this one, are both growing under red and blue grow lights it’s seems to have change its notorious orange stems to a dark burgundy along with the backs of its leaves, resembling more of the atabapoense. In my experience the more natural sunlight makes the stems and leaves turn more of a bright red and then eventually makes its way back to an orangery tone. Okay, New Yeas Goals (besides the boring practical stuff like getting a job and replacing my tooth):

Get a frog

Get a Philodendron atabapoense, an Alocasia cuprea ‘Red’ and an Alocasia reginula ‘Black Secret’

Build a mini-bog for my carnivores

Do a German or a Chinese course

Continue building the terrarium business

Rope in more drawing commissions
