(JTA) – A historic but defunct synagogue in Tunisia was reduced to rubble on Tuesday amid mass rioting after an explosion in Gaza that Hamas blamed on Israel.
Hundreds of people were filmed setting fire to a synagogue in the central Tunisian city of Al Hammah in the hours after the explosion, at a Gaza City hospital where Hamas said many people died. Videos that circulated widely on social media showed people planting Palestinian flags and chipping away at the synagogue building’s stone walls, all without any police intervention.
Some users shared the video of the arson alongside a “#Palestine” hashtag. A video taken Wednesday shows heavy damage to the site, including to the fenced-off grave of a 16th-century rabbi that been a historic pilgrimage site for some Jews.
The incident, which has deprived Al Hammah of a key vestige of its Jewish past, comes amid attacks on other Jewish and Israeli sites around the world — including Germany, France, Portugal, China, and Australia — as Israel retaliates in the Gaza Strip following Hamas’ sweeping, deadly attack on Israel Oct. 7.
Protests against Israel ramped up Tuesday night after the hospital explosion. Dozens of rioters targeted the Israeli embassy in Amman, Jordan. Riots also broke out in Palestinian areas of the West Bank, Hebrew media reported.
Israeli and U.S. officials said they believed with near certainty that the blast was caused by an errant rocket fired by Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
The Al Hammah synagogue was not an active site of worship, as no Jews live in the city; however, it is the site of the tomb of 16th-century Kabbalist Rabbi Yosef Ma’aravi. The same site was previously damaged during the 2011 Arab Spring protests, which were not about Israel.
The American Jewish Committee denounced the vandalism in a statement.
“We are horrified by the burning and destruction of the Al Hammah synagogue in Tunisia,” the group said on X, adding that it was “closely monitoring the situation” and in touch with Tunisian Jewish community leaders.
Tunisia’s small Jewish population of around 1,000 also contended with a deadly terrorist attack earlier this year when a gunman stormed a synagogue on the island of Djerba. Five people died, including two Jewish pilgrims who had traveled to the area from Israel and France, and wounding several others.
In response to the Djerba attack, Tunisia’s president, Kais Saied, pledged he would increase security for the country’s Jewish residents. Saied also drew criticism for using the occasion of the attack to criticize Israel.
Since the latest explosion of violence in Israel and Gaza, Tunisians have taken to the streets in large numbers to support Palestinians. Tunisian schoolchildren have saluted the Palestinian flag, and Saied has pledged to stand by Palestinians while continuing to snuff out any talk of normalization with Israel, a path that four Arab countries took in 2020.

India has urged its citizens travelling to or living in Canada to "exercise utmost caution".
The advisory comes a day after tensions escalated between the countries with each expelling a diplomat from the other side.
Canada said it was investigating "credible allegations" linking the Indian state with the killing of a Sikh separatist leader.
India strongly denied this, calling the allegations "absurd".
Analysts say relations between the countries, which have been strained for months, are now at an all-time low.
How India-Canada ties descended into a public feud
Why Western nations fear India-Canada row
On Wednesday, India's foreign ministry said it issued the advisory "in view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada".
The Indian government has often reacted sharply to demands by Sikh separatists in Western countries for Khalistan, or a separate Sikh homeland.
The Khalistan movement peaked in India in the 1980s with a violent insurgency centred in Sikh-majority Punjab state.
It was quelled by force and has little resonance in India now, but is still popular among some in the Sikh diaspora in countries such as Canada, Australia and the UK.
Canada has the highest number of Sikhs outside Punjab and has seen several pro-Khalistan protests and demonstrations. In June, reports said India had raised a "formal complaint" with Canada about the safety of its diplomats there.
In Wednesday's statement, Delhi said that some recent threats were directed at its diplomats and some Indians "who oppose the anti-India agenda".
"Indian nationals are, therefore, advised to avoid travelling to regions and potential venues in Canada that have seen such incidents," it said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that intelligence agencies were investigating whether "agents of the government of India" were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen - India had designated him a terrorist in 2020.
Nijjar was shot dead in his vehicle by two masked gunmen outside a Sikh temple on 18 June in British Columbia.
"Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty," Mr Trudeau told the Canadian parliament on Monday.
India reacted strongly, saying that Canada was trying to "shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists" who had been given shelter there.
Some Indian media reports claimed the statement from Delhi followed a similar Canadian advisory for its citizens travelling to India. Canada's government confirmed its travel advice for India had been updated on Monday but said it had been "as part of pre-scheduled and routine maintenance in the section on travel health information".
"No new risk information has been added to the India TAA [Travel Advice and Advisories] page," a spokesperson told the BBC. Ottawa's advisory asks its citizens to "exercise a high degree of caution" because of the "risk of terrorist attacks throughout" India.

daily notes - early jan 20, 2024
Had a 4-hour phone call with an old friend last night. It was so hilarious from various angles. I learned about Australia's rabbit fence(?!) and briefly discussed the :Cue Cat barcode scanner.
I learned they have 2,200+ books cataloged in their home library. I always thought books, much like dolls, should not be completely counted. Like, if you observe them too closely, they'll multiply or run away without you realizing.
After we hung up, I did my nightly reading routine on my phone. Kept pausing to have giggle fits every so often, recalling the call with glee. I couldn't calm down until after 5am - getting mostly distracted with a web novel.
Again, kept giggling, as I tried to sleep. Woke up around 6:40am on my own. My alarm goes off at 7:30am. Put on earrings as soon as I got up; haven't worn any since the craft fair (early Nov). I just felt so good, so alive, and the earrings are my way of celebrating that.
I even considered grabbing some nail polish to take with me to the library. I literally do not remember the last time I wore it. Maybe 2020? I always feel so good wearing nail polish.
I was already doing better even before the conversation. Like, I was prepared for a serious topic, and it ended up being something fantastically fun, just nerve-wracking. I also felt good to disclose my concerns, things that I've done and regretted, as I shared my experiences.
God, my teeth are gonna get cold from all this smiling. It's not "House on the Rock" level of cheeks aching, but it's pretty heckin' close. God, it's so good to reconnect with old friendships, spark them with more conversation after getting caught up in life and ending up kinda distant. So good to be seen by someone who saw me back then, back when we were both messes.
I just hope I don't accidentally hurt myself when I flap my hands in excitement later. ========
Other news of note: This upcoming Wednesday is when I get my finished dental crowns. My Orion's Belt of damage will finally be capped and completed.

Some 230 Whales Beached in Tasmania; Rescue Efforts Underway | Snopes.com
HOBART, Australia (AP) — About 230 whales have been stranded on Tasmania’s west coast, just days after 14 sperm whales were found beached on an island off the Australian state’s northwestern coast.
The pod stranded on Ocean Beach in Macquarie Harbour appears to be pilot whales and at least half are presumed to still be alive, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania said Wednesday.
youtube
A team from the Marine Conservation Program was assembling whale rescue gear and heading to the area, the department said.
The whales beached two years to the day after the largest mass-stranding in Australia’s history was discovered in the same harbor.
About 470 long-finned pilot whales were found on Sept. 21, 2020, stuck on sandbars. After a weeklong effort, 111 of those whales were rescued but the rest died.
The entrance to the harbor is a notoriously shallow and dangerous channel known as Hell’s Gate.
Local salmon farmer Linton Kringle helped in the 2020 rescue effort and said the latest challenge would be more difficult.
“Last time they were actually in the harbor and it’s quite calm and we could, sort of, deal with them in there and we could get the boats up to them,” Kringle told Australian Broadcasting Corp.
“But just on the beach, you just can’t get a boat in there, it’s too shallow, way too rough. My thoughts would be try to get them onto a vehicle if we can’t swim them out,” Kringle added.
Vanessa Pirotta, a wildlife scientist specializing in marine mammals, said it was too early to explain why the stranding had occurred.
“The fact that we’ve seen similar species, the same time, in the same location, reoccurring in terms of stranding at that same spot might provide some sort of indication that there might be something environmental here,” Pirotta said.
David Midson, general manager of the West Coast Council municipality, urged people to stay clear.
“Whales are a protected species, even once deceased, and it is an offense to interfere with a carcass,” the environment department said.
Fourteen sperm whales were discovered Monday afternoon on King Island, part of the state of Tasmania in the Bass Strait between Melbourne and Tasmania’s northern coast.
Griffith University marine scientist Olaf Meynecke said it’s unusual for sperm whales to wash ashore. He said that warmer temperatures could also be changing the ocean currents and moving the whales’ traditional food.
“They will be going to different areas and searching for different food sources,” Meynecke said. “When they do this, they are not in the best physical condition because they might be starving so this can lead them to take more risks and maybe go closer to shore.”
The pilot whale is notorious for stranding in mass numbers, for reasons that are not entirely understood.
This happened again in 2020
youtube
Sep 23, 2020 Rescuers trying to free a pod of whales beached off the Australian island of Tasmania said on Wednesday they had found another 200 stranded mammals, bringing the total to 470 and making it one of the country's biggest beachings.
As a rescue effort began its third day off the southern island's rugged west coast, rescuers said they spotted another large group of pilot whales during an aerial reconnaissance of remote Macquarie Harbour, and most were believed to be dead.

He spent the final two seasons of his F1 career with Aston Martin before announcing his retirement in July 2022. Vettel plans to take a hands-on role in the management of the German SailGP team, which was officially welcomed to the event by CEO Sir Russell Coutts at an event in Dusseldorf on Wednesday. The strongest challengers in the 2023-24 season will be three-time SailGP champions Australia skippered by Tom Slingsby, the New Zealand boat led by Pete Burling and Sir Ben Ainslie's British team. Vettel won four consecutive Formula One world titles with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013 Vettel, 35, waved goodbye to Formula One with Aston Martin at the end of the 2022 season  The sustainability aspect of SailGP would have been a big draw for Vettel with all the teams competing in an Impact League which ranks them on being the most environmentally conscious. Vettel regularly wore custom t-shirts and helmets to promote environmental causes during his F1 days. Lasers, water landings, crewless operations: the updates that are coming for the C-130 Hercules family
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 05/28/22 - 4:52 PM in Military

The more advanced versions of the C-130 Hercules tanker that has become a military weapon of war are expected to receive even more 'toys' under the direction of the special operations community.
The MC-130J Commando II and the KC-130J Super Hercules aircraft are experimenting with high-energy lasers, amphibious landing and takeoff, and potentially a fully automated and crewless cockpit, if the work of the U.S. Special Operations Command is successful.
Program officials presented the details of the C-130 aircraft family on Wednesday at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference, held in Tampa, Florida, by the National Defense Industrial Association.

The aircraft, first built in the 1950s, served generations of troops in combat around the world. But now he's facing a contested airspace like he's never seen before.
"Threats are growing, it's just getting worse," said Rich Rodriguez, technical director of the Special Operations Command (SOCOM) for his Fixed Wing Aircraft Executive Program.
U.S. Air Force Colonel Ken Kuebler, head of the fixed-wing portfolio, told conference participants that he is prioritizing autonomous technology to relieve the burden of the flight crew. This was a recurring theme in almost all of this week's air, sea and data panels.
In addition to the workload, the crew itself could see possible cuts. "I need to be able to reduce the crew and reduce the workload of the crew," Kuebler said. “We have a lot of data coming to us all the time.”
A less busy crew, he said, could focus more on aircraft safety and combat missions.
Tumblr media
A rendering of an amphibious modification with two floats for an MC-130J Commando II. The Air Force Special Operations Command and its private sector counterparts are developing a Removable Amphibious Float Modification for the MC-130J, allowing aircraft to take off and land in water areas, as well as conduct independent runway operations.
Rodriguez said that SOCOM has already seen experiments by the Air Force Special Operations Command in an unmanned cockpit integrated into a smaller aircraft platform. He didn't specify which platform.
If successful, these initiatives can hit a huge plane like the variants of the C-130, he said.
Kuebler also wants to save space, but add options. "I need to be able to have a platform that is truly a multimodal and modular system," he said. This means payloads that can easily get in and out of the aircraft and do more than one thing.
U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Kevin McClure, head of PEO Fixed Wing's mobility division, said that the variants of the C-130 are receiving updates with a series of new equipment. The goal is for the numerous variants to have common systems and provide safer infiltration, exfiltration, refueling and refueling.
"But most of it is in contested environments," McClure said. “And this becomes a very difficult problem for which we need the help [of the industry].”

They want better communication systems capable of receiving data from other platforms to increase situational awareness in real time. "Not only can we react and recover, but we can also share it with the community," McClure said.
This goes for training as well. Program managers want augmented reality and virtual reality for immersive training in the variants of the C-130 and as many other aircraft as possible.
What's going on with the MC-130J?
In terms of recapitalization, the U.S. is modifying the MC-130J with mission systems for special operations forces to improve low-level infiltration/exfiltration, air launch, resupply and refueling in contested environments.
Ongoing efforts include radar integration, air mission network, radio frequency countermeasures, open mission system integration, special mission processor technology upgrade, tactical control, combat management system and cloud-based mission system integration.
Tumblr media
The first MC-130J equipped with the advanced set of secure Airborne Mission Networking (AbMN) secure communications.
Planned efforts include the functionality of automated mission systems for joint operations of all domains, palletized ammunition, active electronic scanning radar and training in augmented reality and virtual reality.
The C-130 began its life as a tanker/transportation. It remains a truck in the sky, but it can collect data, detect targets and attack when necessary.
Lieutenant Colonel Matt Foertsch, head of the attack division of PEO Fixed Wing, said that the current work includes the integration of the MC-130Js with a precision attack package and sensor systems for "next generation" targeting. His work also includes the withdrawal of the "W" variant that preceded the "J" variant, which should be completed in July, he said.
The latest work on the AC-130 gunship
Ongoing efforts include shutting down the AC-130W fleet, finishing production of the AC-130J Block 30, adapting the AC-130Js Block 20+ to Block 30, providing infrared suppression systems and bringing updates to the defensive system.
Planned efforts include crew reduction initiatives, adopting a modular approach to open systems and adopting augmented reality and virtual reality training.
Tumblr media
In other words, the gunship must maintain its attack capacity close, but also assume an integrated deterrent impulse, which the Pentagon has assigned to the Commando.
To make this work, Foertsch said, people are keeping an eye on the ammunition thrown by air mainly for the "best lethality". An example of this approach, he explained, is an integrated weapons data link added to a 50-pound warhead class last year.
Foertsch called the data link an "incredible capacity" that allows the crew to fire and then communicate with the round in flight, issuing instructions.
The link gives the user a "dud" command option, which can make the weapon inert in the middle of the flight if an attack needs to be canceled.
Tumblr media
But that still needs to get better, he said. To do this, they turn to the industry to provide state-of-the-art guidance and sensors that can work in environments without GPS.
"Now, for the most part, we do laser sights," he explained, and even that is not enough. They are also looking for optical or automated target recognition in modular and open systems.
But they want to do this by adding features to their existing forms, instead of adding another round created for a purpose. And they want greater reach and distance.
The work on this front is being done with two research grants for small businesses, he said. This involves testing an electrically propelled miniature cruise missile that can be fired at distances greater than 100 nautical miles and another small cruising missile that can travel twice that distance.
As if that were not enough, they would also like this 82-ton plane to land in the water and take off again.
Tumblr media
This is important for Navy SEALs, Marine Raiders and other operators who need to get wet in distant locations.
Rodriguez said that U.S. Air Force special operations personnel are doing digital planning and working to put floating sets on the platform exactly for this task.

When Tony Gustavsson began his tenure as the Matildas' head coach in January 2021, one of his first stated objectives was to get his players to "see the same picture".
"I'm one of those people that wants to control the controllables," he said in his first media conference.
"My experience [is] the better prepared you are, the more confident you are [and] the more you can simplify things for everyone to understand and see the same picture.
"Not simplifying in terms of neglecting important details, [but] simplifying in terms of creating a picture that everyone sees."
He was referring to a few different things: the new philosophies and systems he wanted to introduce, attempts to connect with players virtually amid lockdowns and border restrictions, and ultimately how to prepare the team for the Tokyo Olympics that, at that point, was only six months away.
A lot has happened since that media conference, now close to a year and a half ago. A different and more complicated picture has emerged.
Stripped back to its numbers, the picture is stark: The Matildas have played 24 games since Gustavsson took over, winning eight, drawing five and losing 11.
Of those losses, three came against opponents lower than Australia in the global rankings (Japan, the Republic of Ireland, and Korea) — three games which were decided by a single goal.
The Matildas finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, though won just two of five games (and one in regular time) to get there.
They've scored 53 goals across this period and conceded 49.
Their longest winning streak – and the time frame in which they scored the most goals – came in the group stage of February's AFC Asian Cup, where they blew past three emerging nations — Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand — with an aggregate score of 24-1 before losing 1-0 to South Korea in the quarter-finals.
Aside from the 4-3 win against Great Britain in Tokyo, Australia under Gustavsson has not won a single game against European opposition — nations that have made up 10 of the 24 games the squad has played.
In that context – the 15 months since January 2021 – this picture of the Matildas is not a pretty one. Their recent 7-0 loss to Spain and Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Portugal have only added darker paint to the portrait.
With the Women's World Cup around the corner, it's understandable that fans and the media are becoming restless. There appears, on the surface, to have been no improvement in the side that many expect to make a deep run in the tournament they're co-hosting next year. Faith and patience in Gustavsson are beginning to fade.
However, just as there was following the Matildas' unexpected Asian Cup exit, there is another, bigger picture that must be brought into focus here: Australia's struggles against higher-ranked sides – particularly those from Europe – are nothing new.
Between 2011 and 2020, under the tenure of five different head coaches, the Matildas faced top 10 teams 42 times (accounting for roughly one-third of their overall opponents) with a win ratio of just 38 per cent.
And of the 21 games played against nations ranked in the top five in that period, Australia won just twice.
Comparatively, in the 15 months since Gustavsson took over, the Matildas have played higher-ranked opponents more often (13 of 24 games, or over half) and with a win ratio of 33 per cent.
Australia's recent games against Spain and Portugal fit into this longer trend. They are two parts of a larger picture that extends back over a decade.
Within that, too, there is the narrower picture of this particular June window:
Both Spain and Portugal were fine-tuning their squads to participate in next week's European Championships, while the Matildas had nothing immediate to prepare for
Australia's team was primarily made up of young, uncapped, and fringe players in the absence of senior stars
There remains an almost-insurmountable gap in the length and quality of the leagues from which most available players – in all three teams – were plucked
As Gustavsson said plainly following Australia's loss to Spain: "This is where we're at." And when understood in the context of their history, it is where they have always been.
This is the picture that Gustavsson sees. It is the picture that the players see. And after this recent friendly series, it is the picture that everyone else in Australian football now needs to see.
A game of perspectives
Indeed, these past two games have offered a microcosm of where the Matildas now sit internationally.
Seventh-ranked Spain, which hasn't lost a competitive match since 2019, showed the gulf that exists between Australia's second-string side and a fully professional, international outfit; a team filled with players from clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid, players who've won Champions Leagues, players who've won World Cups at youth level.
Spain represents the growing dominance of Europe in the women's game, the pinnacle of the sport for both club and country. As Gustavsson said following the loss: It was never a question that Spain would win, but simply by how much.
Portugal, meanwhile, has provided a different perspective on where Australia currently sits in the international pecking order. Wednesday's 1-1 draw against the 30th-ranked side showed the Matildas' second-string team can be competitive against an emerging European nation.
While Portugal dominated the game's opening half and missed a handful of major chances, Australia was able to adjust to the tempo, reconfigure its formation, and muscle its way back into the contest in the second.
On the balance of play, a draw – thanks to a debut goal from Princess Ibini-Isei and an 87th-minute equaliser by substitute Telma Encarnacao — seemed fair.
It also fit into the longer trend: The Matildas' only other two meetings against Portugal ended in a 2-1 loss and a 0-0 draw back in 2018 — two games where Australia had arguably stronger players to choose from including Sam Kerr, Lisa De Vanna, Alanna Kennedy, Chloe Logarzo, and Elise Kellond-Knight.
And so, here we are.
Despite the many caveats and contextualisations of this international window — the unavailability of the Matildas' strongest players, the underestimated power of a Euros-favoured Spain, the gulf that exists between Australia's domestic pathways and those of emerging European nations, the chasm between the Matildas' first and second-string players — the expectations of fans and the media continues to grow.
They have been magnified by the pressure of Australia co-hosting the biggest football tournament in the world with a team containing a handful of world-class individuals playing regularly at some of the game's best clubs.
But that, as we have seen, is only part of the picture. Because while Australia has players of the calibre of Kerr, Ellie Carpenter, Steph Catley, Hayley Raso, and Kyah Simon, so too do most other nations that Australia has faced in the past 16 months, nations that they should also expect to face in a year's time.
The Matildas are, after all, just one star in a much larger galaxy of stars. The brightest of them have already accelerated away, emitting a light that began many years ago but which we are only now just starting to see.
This does not, of course, absolve Gustavsson of – in his own words – controlling what he can control. Valid questions have been asked of his player selections, his tactics, and his management of opportunities afforded by international windows.
But they must be balanced alongside the things he cannot control: the decades of underinvestment in Australia's youth national teams, the lagging behind of the A-League Women in providing full-time opportunities for emerging players, an uncoordinated domestic pyramid, and an increasingly unaffordable development pipeline, all of which have coalesced into where the Matildas now find themselves.
"This is an answer telling us where we are right now with [these] players and that pathway," Gustavsson said.
"That's an insight that tells us where we're at, and we need to keep investing to be fair to these players, to have a fair chance to jump from club land to international football, which is, right now, too big of a step for them.
"The Matildas is not a development platform. A senior national team should not work on developing players at the same time as trying to win games. The senior Matildas should be the tip of the iceberg.
"Sometimes a reality check – even if it hurts – can be healthy for the long-term.
"Short-term, it hurts for all of us, including us in and around the Matildas, fans, media, stakeholders, the federation.
"But in the long run, maybe that's exactly what we need to realise exactly where we're at and what we need to do.
"There's a difference between expectations and belief.
"I will never, ever stop believing in this team. But we also need to be fair on what we can expect and what time we can expect it."
What, then, do we make of all this?
Are the Matildas any better? Based on their past 16 months of results, no.
Are they any worse? In the context of their own history, not really. They are about where they have always been.
So where should they be, exactly? That will likely be the question that determines Gustavsson's fate, but it all depends on the picture you choose to see.

Mean Ellen DeGeneres: the 'be kind' girl wasn't kind
Tumblr media
Ellen DeGeneres premiered a new stand-up routine in West Hollywood on Wednesday including some business about how mean she is.
The former Ellen DeGeneres Show host told the audience she was “kicked out of show businesses” not once but twice.
“There’s no mean people in show business. The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind.
“I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f*ck yourself,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised.”
Ellen DeGeneres reminded the audience that 2020 was not her first experience of being booted from TV
In the late 90s, she came out as gay a year before the cancellation of her sitcom Ellen. Opinion differs on whether her coming out led to the cancellation – or perhaps, the more serious tome adopted by the show after she came out.
But no argument which corner Elen is in.
“Eventually, they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”
Degeneres experienced her second fall from grace in 2020 when employees accused her of leading a toxic workplace.
She referred briefly to that episode on Wednesday.
“I’m giving stuff away … and I danced, then I was mean, and they didn’t like me again.”
Had enough yet?
The Ellen Degeneres show finally announces end date.
Former employees respond to Ellen DeGeneres ending her talk show.
Ellen DeGeneres gives on-air apology addressing allegations.
‘I’m so sorry’: Ellen DeGeneres apologises to staff.

Fake News or Common Practice? Suspicions Behind US Interference in Solomon Islands Election
— Qin Sheng | April 19, 2024
Tumblr media
Illustration: Liu Rui/Global Times
Voting has closed across the Solomon Islands on Wednesday. About 420,000 registered voters will have their say across 50 national seats in the Parliament, which will later elect the country's prime minister.
This election in the Solomon Islands has attracted widespread international attention, partly because it is the first general election since it established diplomatic ties with China. Against the backdrop of increasing major power games in the South Pacific region, whether its current Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare can be re-elected is a major test of his foreign policy.
In addition, reports over US interference in the country's election through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have sparked quite a storm in the public opinion field.
Reports noted that the USAID's Solomon Islands Election and Political Processes Program (SIEPP), funded through the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening (CEPPS), has conducted voter awareness campaigns in the Solomon Islands, aiming to sway voters toward pro-American candidates. On Monday, the US Embassy to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu issued a statement saying the reports are blatantly misleading claims.
Whether the reports of USAID interference in the Solomon Islands election are true or not, it is an undeniable fact that Western countries, including the US, have long intervened in the political processes, economic policies and diplomatic tendencies of aid-receiving countries through aid. After World War II, developed Western countries provided massive aid to developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, ostensibly to help these countries develop. However, over a long period of time, the aid came with various strings attached, regardless of the recipient country's actual situation and true intentions.
In 2020, shortly after the Solomon Islands established diplomatic relations with China, the US pledged $25 million in aid to Malaita Province, a move interpreted as supporting the latter's independence referendum to potentially secede from the Solomon Islands.
In recent years, ties between China and Pacific Island countries have been growing at an accelerating rate. More and more Pacific Island countries have established or resumed diplomatic relations with China and signed agreements to jointly build the Belt and Road Initiative. Political mutual trust between China and Pacific Island countries is continuously strengthening, and the potential for cooperation in various fields is being explored. Through cooperation, the assistance provided by the Chinese government has significantly improved the well-being of the local people, earning unanimous praise from the islanders.
The positive development trend between China and Pacific Island countries has caused tension among so-called traditional aid countries such as the US and Australia in the West, who believe that China is trying to replace their dominant position in the region. However, the fact is that after the end of World War II, due to the sharp decline in the strategic position of Pacific Island countries, the US abandoned the South Pacific for over half a century, ignoring the slow economic development and weak infrastructure of the Pacific Island countries, tacitly approving Australia and New Zealand's dominant position in the region. As China's cooperation with Pacific Island countries deepens and expands, the South Pacific has once again attracted the attention of the US, but this attention is not due to concern for the development of the island countries, but rather a worry about their own waning influence.
From the "US Strategic Framework for the Indo-Pacific" under the Donald Trump administration to the "Indo-Pacific Strategy of the United States" and "Pacific Partnership Strategy" under the Joe Biden administration, the US continues to increase its aid and diplomatic efforts toward the Pacific Island countries.
The US hosted two consecutive US-Pacific Island Countries Summits in 2022 and 2023, and appointed the first-ever US ambassador to the Pacific Island Forum. The positioning of Pacific Island countries in US foreign strategy is becoming increasingly clear. Increasing investment in Pacific Island countries is an important means for the US to promote the Indo-Pacific Strategy and counter Chinese influence.
Therefore, the public opinion storm over interference in the election reflects the dissatisfaction of Pacific Island countries with the US using aid to exert political influence, and their dissatisfaction with the US using aid as leverage in exchange for its own geopolitical interests. The aid competition promoted by the US in the South Pacific region with a zero-sum game mind-set is forcing Pacific Island countries to take sides, as evidenced by the ongoing troubles in domestic and diplomatic affairs since the Solomon Islands established diplomatic relations with China.
In stark contrast to the US, China emphasizes equality and mutual benefit, non-interference in internal affairs, and aid process without strings attached, respecting the political system, development stage, and development characteristics of Pacific Island countries. As a major power, China never looks down on them, and it is precisely the various advantages of Chinese aid that make China the most trustworthy South-South cooperation partner for Pacific Island countries.
