June 20 - Osaka Day Trip

Last post :( As my time in Japan comes to a close, I’ve come to treat this departure with more of an appreciation for what I’ve been able to see and do rather than experience remorse for everything that I will miss. At the same time, I will most definitely miss and remember this trip, the people, and everything that I got to experience. Apart from the sappy talk, today was our day trip to Osaka! I’d been looking forward for this trip for some time; many people like Matthew had already been to Osaka several times before today, but this would be my first trip. I was especially looking forward to the food; I even saved a famous ramen spot that I saw on TikTok.

During today’s nostalgic morning lecture, where we discussed what worked and what didn’t during the study abroad, I proposed the idea of taking a day to go to the beach for next year’s study abroad. My comment was a hit, getting laughs and several sponsors. On the way to Osaka, many of my friends shared music using Spotify. Again, my Apple Music Family Plan subscription excludes me from a vital friend making moment. Regardless, I took the time to listen to The Weeknd’s new releases from his new show: The Idol. Raj, Nico, and I have been watching new episodes of The Idol every night they release. The show is subpar, but the memories are priceless.

In Osaka, we began with food. I had some not too bad tonkatsu with some friends. Afterwards, we visited the Osaka Castle before heading to America town and visiting the famous streets lined with street food shops, many featuring eccentric displays with moving crabs, animatronic faces, and more. It was truly something special. Professor Smith did his final “Gather Up, Alligators!” to our collective cringe and simultaneous sadness. After splitting, I went on Google Maps to find a surprise. My saved TikTok ramen restaurant? Just a 3 minute walk away. I told everyone I’d meet up with them later…

It was the best ramen I’d ever had. Slow braised pork on top, soft noodles and savory, salty broth underneath. Perfection. I shopped for a couple hours afterwards, but to be honest, I couldn’t find anything. Shopping and the ramen made me reallyyy sleepy. This was all before Aulora texted me the classic: “Wya.” I met up with the larger friend group to make a plan: everyone else would continue to shop and grab lunch. Me on the other hand? Rush over to the famous Osaka aquarium before taking the hour long train across the city to teamlab Osaka with everyone else. It was a plan.

The aquarium was beautiful. So many penguins, jellyfish, a whale shark (yes really), crabs, and more! I was expecting a little more, but it was perfect for my speedy run through. Teamlab was not as awesome as I expected; maybe the one in Tokyo set high expectations, but this outdoor botanical gardens style wasn’t doing it for me. It was definitely relaxing and cool to see, but Tokyo CLEARS. We finished the night off with some dinner at an okonomiyaki place (I had yakisoba) before taking a really long hour and a half journey back.

What a trip. I’m honestly sadder now writing the end of this blog post than I was when I started. I’ll miss everyone and everything dearly. I know I’ll be back and likely see many of my friends in the Fall. Thank you for joining me on this Tumblr blog.

Academic Reflection

The reading primarily discussed urban planning! It discussed a number of things that I’m incredibly interested in, including the fact that Japan tends to tear down and rebuild their housing structures rather than treat these structures as investments that need to be preserved, as many homeowners do in the U.S. I believe Japan has the right take on this. It has promoted extensive growth and importantly, allowed for the housing stock to grow in line with population growth in Japan’s major cities. If you look at the graph data, you can see that housing supply in major U.S. cities has remained stagnant or barely increased while population soared; this comes in contrast with Japan, which has seen massive increases in housing supply that correspond to population increases. This has limited extreme increases in housing costs and given tenants far more power in the housing market. Why? Because Japan’s housing market is a lot more reminiscent of an actual marketplace than the U.S., where adding new supply is so difficult that the country faces a shortage of millions of units. I could write about this on and on, but the point is there. Japan, 1. USA, 0.

Walking around Osaka, I could see these principles in broad daylight. The urban planning is not as homogenous, separated, and pre designed as in the U.S. Rather, it represents a mishmash of different uses ranging from housing to retail to workplaces, all placed in large part according to the marketplace desire at each particular location. In the U.S., our preplanned, separated communities tend to create communities where marketplace demands aren’t met (i.e. homeowners may want a Walmart within walking distance of their home, but zoning laws make it impossible in this scenario). I’m a huge, HUGE fan of this style of urban planning because I strongly believe that it brings communities closer together through the ability to walk and interact with your fellow neighbors, it encourages and reinforces a wide array of marketplace choice in housing, restaurants, retail, and workplace, it pushes people to welcome new neighbors rather than reject them, it massively reduces costs for residents who don’t need to buy a car and spent money on gas, insurance, maintenance, and it creates safe, functional cities that serve the people, not a select group of influential politicians and urban planners. I digress. Maybe I’m just loving Japan a little extra because I’m leaving so soon. Or maybe (more likely) the U.S. could learn a bit about urban planning from Japan and the vibrant city of Osaka.

When I learned that there was a 1929 film version of The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne, I wondered how this version compared to the other films that were inspired by the same book. To start with, there were many elements that I expected, like exploration of the world around us, devices that used this amazing thing called ELECTRICITY, and some cool but bizarre outfits worn by the characters on the submarine. Little by little, I discovered that while it did stay true to the spirit of Jules Verne, it was definitely a *loose* adaptation of the classic story.

There’s an ultimate bad guy, sporting a fabulous (read: ridiculous) hat:

When the submarines sink down to the ocean floor, the humans meet some weird-looking creatures:

But then it gets even weirder.

Huh. I wonder what that “ancient gluttonous enemy” is going to look like …

Hoo-Boy.

Do my eyes deceive me, or is that an alligator with a horn on its head?

Well, as long as we’re on our submarine, we should be safe …

… unless those fishy people figure out how to get in.

Anyway, as long as there aren’t any more giant monsters hanging around down here, we SHOULD be okay —

Yes, my sentiments exactly!!!!!

If you're up for an old movie that sits on the fence between silent films and talkies, that features the awesome Lionel Barrymore being extra over-the-top in the acting department, and that features special effects that are pretty amazing (I mean amazing overall, but ESPECIALLY amazing for 1929), then I highly recommend this film.

While the NYPL system doesn't own the 1929 version of this film, you can browse through our collection to find other versions of this story in print and on film. And this version is available to stream on TCM!

I watched Alligator (1980)

Sure, I saw this as a kid, but I remember nothing but an old man being eaten by an Alligator.

Director Lewis Teague isn't the world's best director. He's not the worst either. When it comes to Stephen King adaptations "Cat's Eye" and "Cujo" I remember both falling on the side of pretty good. He also directed the shitty sequel to "Romancing the Stone", "Jewel Of The Nile" and he directed the abysmal turd that is "Navy Seals" starring Charlie Sheen. Ok, ok...maybe Teague isn't that great a director. But, the best thing he ever did was Alligator.

"Alligator" is a creature feature that uses a bigger version of a common animal as it's monster. It's definitely riding the wave left by Steven Spielberg's "Jaws", but rather than a reasonable story about a shark at a beach, this film takes on the urban legend of alligators living in a city's sewer system. However, despite it's ridiculous plot, "Alligator" is a far better movie than it should be, and it's one of the rare post-Jaws animal-monster films that can be taken on its own merits.

That's not to say Alligator is the best movie you're going to watch this year. Its definitely a B-movie and it's definitely silly, but it has so much going for it outside of that fact. The writing here is good solid stuff. The running jokes work, with your hero's hairline constantly being commented on, a joke that grounds and relates him almost immediately. Your hero by the way is played by Robert Forrester, who is an effortlessly likeable and laid back kind of guy. The supporting cast is also fantastic.

All this silly plot is finely wrapped in a decently competent film about bureaucracy and scummy rich people and environmental warnings. It's the kind of horror movie that knows it should have fun with itself, while also feeling mildly grown up when it comes to character and pacing.

And, yes, it's awesome watching people get eaten by a giant Alligator. The gator is a good enough special effect, and just watching it chomp down on people is so much fun.

Also, who remembers Lake Placid? This is so much better than Lake Placid.

Crocodiles in Media (2)

These are some other crocodile/alligator characters that I have managed to find.

Renekton- League of Legends

The game League of Legends is known for their wide range of characters and so Renekton fits right in with all the other humanoid animals and spirits.

I have always loved the full on rendered style of the game's splash art and the cinematic feel of the composition which manages to emerge the players into this fantastical world filled with peculiar creatures and characters. The character's design is pretty solid and although the anthropomorphic looking body and armour make this character feel more human, there is still a primal ferocity in his pose and demeanour which balances the human-animal ratio.

Killer Croc- Batman Arkham Asylum

I don't know a lot about this character but I still consider Killer Croc to be one of the most iconic and well known crocodile-related characters in the media.

I find his backstory to be pretty interesting as well. From my research, Killer Croc (formally known as Waylon Jones) was born with a rare condition that sort of resembles epidermolytic hyperkeratosis which is a skin condition that causes sever blistering and a scaly like texture.

The design itself has stayed pretty much the same through the years and although it is a simple design, it delivers the character's tragic backstory pretty greatly.

I personally prefer the comic version rather than the 3D game model. I feel like the pronounced black shadows and comic like style make this character look more threatening and easy to read rather than the 3d one which seems to look a bit bland and out of proportion.

The Crocodiles- Assassin's Creed Origins

These crocodiles from ACO are pretty similar to the ones from Resident Evil. I have found a surprising amount of similar characters in games. They are usually there to make the player's journey a little more interesting through fighting these water ''enemies'' .

I think the model look good and I like how, compared to Resident Evil, these crocodiles have more texture and dimension to their skin. However, I think this model's face looks a bit strange, especially the teeth. They seem to be a little too big and the strange yellow-ish colour makes them stand out , giving them an almost cartoonish look.

King K. Roll- Donkey Kong

King K. Rool is a fictional anthropomorphic crocodile and the main antagonist in Nintendo's Donkey Kong video game franchise, as well as the archnemesis of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.

I was never a big fan of the way Nintendo designs their villains. I always found the cartoonish and stylised look to work a lot better as a 2D pixelated game rather than 3D. I do, however, appreciate the attention to details in the scaly body and the shiny elements like the crown and the diamond on his cape.

Brutus and Nero- The Rescuers

So far, all the characters I have looked at have had the role of the villain/enemy or simply be an obstacle in the protagonist's journey through the movie/game.

Such is the case for these two ''henchmen'' from Disney's 1977 The Rescuers. There is nothing special about these designs although the iconic Disney style makes for some very nice and exaggerated face expressions for these two crocodiles. The villainous smiles combined with the sharp teeth st5iking out and the cat-like glowing eyes pretty much define what animal antagonists look like in Disney movies.

A good example for that are the eels from Little Mermaid and the hyenas from Lion King which both have the same features.

Louis- The Princess and The Frog

This crocodile from The Princes and the Frog is the first crocodile I have researched that does not have the role of the villain/antagonist.

Louis not only helps the protagonists on their journey but would go as far as to transform himself in a human just so he can pursue his dream as a musician. The way he was designed makes it very obvious that he was never intended to be a bad guy. While all the other crocodiles/alligators I have looked at have very sharp teeth and claws and scaly bodies and intimidating eyes, Lois is a lot more rounded up and happy looking.

I think this shows how even something as dangerous and terrifying as a crocodile doesn't have to only stay in a certain circle of designated roles but can break the stereotypes and be the hero of a story.

Alligator Loki- Loki

I love this characters role in the Loki series and although it does not speak or emote, it often shows a lot of personality and cunning intelligence.

The comic relief animal character is something that has been done in popular comedy Disney Shows before such as in Jessy where the new nanny has to deal with one of the kids 7 ft long Asian Monitor Lizard.

Lizzie- Rampage

In the movie adaptation, Lizzie was once a normal American Crocodile from the Florida Everglades. However, after consuming a whole canister of serum that was designed to cure most of the world's diseases, the once normal reptile mutated into a gigantic monster with razor sharp scales, huge tusks and teeth and a spiny club on her tail similar to an Ankylosaurs.

These are some of the early designs for Lizzie that ended up not being used. I absolutely love the way these designs present a more fantasy like creature that mix the features of dinosaurs with dragons.

These designs remind me of Kaijus which are giant alien looking monsters that originate from Japanese media. I specifically like the white versions mouth and how it is filled with thousand of teeth and splits up in 3 individual parts.

On the other hand, I really like the blue and green colouration of the second design. It reminds me of how some dinosaurs used to be very vibrant. I also think this kind of colouration would suggest mutation a lot more well since it implies something more drastic and scientifically unexplainable.

Crocubot- Rick and Morty

Crocubot is a character from Rick and Morty that is basically part crocodile and part robot. I love this design and how the only organic crocodile parts that have still remained are his head, and arm and his tail.

I think the idea of mixing cyborgs/robots with organic real-life animals is a very interesting idea that could make for some very cool character designs from a dystopian world.

This sort of thing reminds me of how in Detroit Become Human people have not only manage to create human like robots but also android animals who look exactly like animals on the outside but look like machines on the inside.

We have reached a point in engineering and robotics where we are able to build animals that act and look like animals, so a scenario similar to Detroit is not as impossible as we might think.

Scientists have built a robot that teaches itself how to walk like an animal. This robot was made for research purposes and as an attempt of learning how the spinal cord operates in a new born animal. The robot uses an algorithm to guide its learning. A foot sensor sends information to target data from a modelled virtual spinal cord which runs as a program in the robot’s computer. It learns to walk by continuously comparing sent and expected sensor information, and adapting its motor control patterns.

Another very interesting example is how a roboticist from The University of Berlin created a robotic bee which was then placed in a hive to monitories the interactions and communication between bees. The most important part of this experiment was to understand why and how a worker bee signals the location of a nearby food source through a specific ''waggle dance'' .

TomBot is a robot that resembles a Labrador puppy. This robot dog was created in order to help dementia patients, families, and individuals that are facing health adversities.

The robot was programmed to act exactly like a real puppy, with everything from realistic dog sounds to interactive sensors that make the robots actins and movements really life-like

Historic and Spiritual Links

Crocodiles have ties in Egyptian culture as well. In the Pyramid Texts, there were mentions of Sobek, one of the oldest Egyptian deities. He was the lord of the crocodiles and was often depicted as having the body of a human and the head of a crocodile.

He was worshipped by the people of ancient Egypt in order to appease both him and crocodiles in general, but to also ensure the fertility of their people and crops. It is said that Sobek was the creator of the Nile river. Many mummified crocodiles, of all ages and sizes, have been found in Egyptian tombs.

Crocodiles are also considered monsters and devils in disguise by Christians during the Middle Ages. For native tribes, crocodiles signify unflattering personality traits such as aggressive attitude. short-temperedness or even insincerity and false emotions by shedding ''crocodile tears''.

They could also have a more positive meaning as well. Someone who's spiritual animal is the crocodile, could be characterised trough positive traits such as precision in motion and agility.

TGIWednesday: The parade of the unimaginable

"The Parade of the Unimaginable” is a game we all play- like worst case scenario thinking and going to that dark place instead of being confident that every little thing is gonna be alright (like the Three Little Birds song by Bob Marley). And so it was on a Friday, of all days, that I received a giant brown accounting envelope ugh. Now I know every year we have to deal with taxes and every day we deal with money and bills, but I just didn’t want to open this beast on a weekend for fear of what alligators were in there. It sat at my dining room table all weekend. Every now and then I forgot about it and then at times I went dark, worst case scenario. Even if I had a question and wanted to scream, there was no one at that office all weekend anyway. Friday, came and went, then Saturday, then Sunday. Monday I opened that envelope only to see that it was copies of things they had already done for me and merely mailed my copies to me. So for nearly 3 days that envelope was alligator wrestling me and taking up rent-free space in my mind! Ugh grrrrr. Most times the best thing we can do is plow forward through our challenges, even during this past full moon and just get things done. The mode has branching paths leading to fights that can lead to rewards like power-ups, customization items, and even new Superstars to play as. From New York cyclist Bolo Reynolds to the alligator wrestler Billy Huggins, the story is told by comic pages before and after each match. One of the main modes this game has to offer is Campaign, a single-player mode where the player controls seven characters made exclusively for this game as Paul Heyman and Stone Cold Steve Austin team up to bring a new era to World Wrestling Entertainment. Created by Saber Interactive, the same team behind the NBA 2K Playground games, WWE 2K Battlegrounds takes a more arcade-style approach from WWE 2K's realistic style. So, with WWE 2K21 cancelled because of it and the pandemic, WWE 2K Battlegrounds would take its place. WWE 2K Battlegrounds will feature a roster of more than 70 wrestlers with additional stars to be announced and will release on September 18th for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.WWE 2K Battlegrounds is the 2020 WWE video game, made in place of WWE 2K21 due to the massive backlash WWE 2K20 received (and rightfully so, as it was revealed to be a horrid glitchfest among release, causing it to be known as one of the worst video games of 2019). Born to artist parents, Rechin seemed to inherit their “artistic genes,” showing a natural ability and keen interest in art at a young age. More than 100 artists are participating this year, including recognized bird sculptor Jeff Rechin. Sarah Webber, Final Approach, oil, 12 x 24.
