thoughts on volume 12 of real:

THEY'RE REALLY MAKING ME WAIT FOR THIS ONE HUH. no yama update and only the barest smidgen of an azumi update. but at least there was much togawa kiyoharu.

ryo absolutely has a puppy crush on kiyoharu

it's nice to have some focus on azumi again since we've seen so much of the guys lately. and fumika's back!! and she's the tigers' new manager!! this bodes well for my takahashi joins the tigers prediction. except considering there's only 3 volumes left i'm not sure we'll make it that far before i catch up.

did you know that print copies of volumes 4 through 14 tend to sell for like two hundred dollars a piece? neither did i until After i decided i was going to start collecting it. oh kiyoharu we're really in it now. i can collect it on kindle i guess

kiyoharu is Not having a good time at this training camp. but it was good for his character development. ough he's such an asshole i love him

oh no. perhaps i'm focusing a little too hard on this panel because a couple days ago we took my cat to the vet and they did a chest x ray and found a bunch of cancer in her lungs so we had to put her down so Lung Metastasis is fresh in my mind. but i hope this is just Azumi Thinking and not. like. something that's going to come up again later.

maybe this aspect of kiyoharu is there as a counterpoint to the whole theme of moving forward. he’s moving forward so quickly he’s leaving everything else behind.

damn. nomiya went through that whole character development arc for the past 3 volumes and nothing really came out of it. hm. don't like that.

when is everyone's birthday? over a year has passed since the start of the manga and only takahashi has had a birthday. i Think nomiya's drivers license said his was in april but don't quote me on that. so he's definitely nineteen now. kiyoharu was Explicitly Nineteen throughout the so far but he's been nineteen for a while. maybe we'll get an age update in the next volume. but the next volume has shiratori on the cover and shiratori in the back cover copy so maybe not.

if i'm being honest if i were reading this as it was coming out i would be Very Frustrated. like damn. thirteen years of serialization and azumi and kiyoharu still aren't together and takahashi has barely touched a basketball. plot payoffs please 🙏

thoughts on volume 10 of real:

the flashback scene made my heart beat just as fast as it did when the events happened in volume one. god kiyoharu is so fucking cool. i love this man even though he's got a Fuck Ass Haircut Now.

also takahashi's eyes are glowing. that's so cute holy shit. nothing else about this young man is "cute" except maybe his emo hair but the way he turns into an excited kitty with dilated pupils when he's presented the opportunity to play basketball again. he's so cute.

little bit of kiyoharu angst!! he's going for his checkup, and we get a Long, Tense, Drawn Out Scene of him waiting to find out if he has cancer again.

and he does not. he's okay. he's so silly.

kiyoharu 🤝 me getting blood drawn all the fucking time

shit has not hit the fan yet for kiyoharu but good lord it looks like it's about to. and i hope it does because i need to see this boy cry. we have complete radio silence from yama which does not bode well, and azumi has applied to a university overseas. the consequences of these have not hit kiyoharu yet but this boy has a big storm coming.

he and azumi are Still Not Together and if this subplot doesn't end in an airport confession scene I Swear. To God.

i thought nomiya would simply not have the tokyo lightnings tryouts in the bag and it would be another of his silly little misadventures but he might actually do it that sick bastard. other than the fact that his tendency to punch his problems has flared up again and he may have lost his practice buddies. aka the college his old upperclassman goes to that nomiya just walked into like he was on the team. he's getting good again! but the overlap between "point guard" and "head coach" is once again showing up.

as time goes on i'm becoming less and less sure of this prediction but i'm sticking with it until i get definitively proven wrong.

showing up at his high school graduation and stealing the valedictorian speech, however, may not have been the best move of his.

takahashi is scared to try basketball again, but he Has to. this is his biggest breakthrough so far and on some level he knows it. he's still wrestling with his self-doubt, but his self-awareness is getting sharper. hara has picked up on this, and she knows a guy.

and here come the dreams (the tigers' rival team) practicing in the rehabilitation hospital's gym. i was hoping takahashi would join the tigers but honestly? if he was their rival? that would be fun. he'd get a rematch against nomiya and kiyoharu.

takahashi's community is growing. he's getting introduced to more and more Cool Disabled People, and that's spurring his character development. he's got the influence of hanasaki, who was the first other disabled person he actually tried to connect with, and shiratori, who's set a Goal and is determined to achieve it and not afraid to air out his own insecurities at what is probably Full Volume in the Middle Of The Fuck-Ass Gym. and now he's seen the dreams practice---he got to watch a room full of Cool Disabled People do The Thing He Likes, and he got a little seed of encouragement from one of them.

we find out in like. volume 2. that this player is a class 1 player like takahashi would be. i wonder if that was intentional foreshadowing or if the writer just remembered that detail and went "hmm i can use this for a second purpose"

good things are on the horizon for takahashi. i was right about his character development being So Satisfying.

side note: i often jot down ideas as soon as i finish the volume and then go take a shower and have bedtime so i can generate literary analysis thoughts. here's what the first draft of this post looked like:
