death of the divine ✸
as your flatter talk shivers down my spine i hear the Holy One exposing all the lies (Lord, forgive me, i know my flesh needs to die) x
baal / lucifer / michael from angels before man and angels & man by @nicosraf
close-ups + work progress under the cut

cleaned up sketch (i can't perceive my own messy sketch's coherency ok)

1st version. didn't like how thick the lineart and the colour palette isn't clicking with me. is so i scrapped it. decided i want to do frame/illuminated manuscript thingy so i added frame and re-centered michael.
i kind of winged it for the final version, so i don't have progress of me picking colour palette or compositions. idk how i did it, i just did it, it was hard. i had a bad day so i blanked out the entire day to just lose myself in this illustration. and then uh. tada.
now some close-ups:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and some notes:
i know i want lucifer's skin to come across as "gold", so i keep picking his colour in the orange spectrum. bcs yanno--the sun (morningstar). naturally baal is more red leaning, which i think also suits his lion associated imagery well (because lion -> strength card (in tarot deck) -> red. idk, it's how my brain is)
originally michael doesn't wear an armour. i decided last minute to put him in one because fuck it; (1) armour cool and (2) i am a masochist ig
both baal and lucifer wear lipgloss. this is entirely dedicated to rafael's (the author. not the angel.) suffering. they share lipgloss by kissing, you fools.
michael has "jellyfish" hairstyle because. the front bob kinda reminds me how catholic friars/monks in certain schoolings cut their hair in that bob hair? yknow the one?? ya?? anyway it's for that imagery.
both baal and lucifer's legs are caging michael. bcs they're what ground him (vices/temptations) ahahahahaa
i actually asked rafael (author not the angel) and he said he imagined baal is a brunette, which is the same like i had in mind. except that baal asked that he got depicted as a wizened old man/wizard. so now he gets a beard and his hair is white. (he also insisted i gave him a stylish beard)
if u look closely at the jewelries the demons wore; one of lucifer's rings and baal's visible earring have gemstones the colour of michael's eyes
in return, michael's sash is the colour of the demons
baal has a ring with heliodor (yellow) for lucifer, and lucifer has a(nother) ring with red ruby for baal
baal's other gemstones are topaz and lucifer's are yellow jasper
both demons have pearl necklaces. they're supposed to represent michael('s wings ahahahahahaahaha)
my headcanon is that michael's wings are brown like sparrow's actually. BUT during the war, god gave him more power and authority and my understanding is that he got tempered into a perfect sword; so his wings turned white. when book 3 came out and they finally bang (I FUCKING HOPE THEY DO. RAFAEL. THIS IS FOR YOU RAFAEL.) his wings will turn brown againehehhehe
lucifer's coat has wing-like cut at the ends to represent his no longer existing wingsbye
michael is blue because one time i shared this imagery with rafael; michael wearing blue because of the same reason virgin mary is depicted in blue. god's favourites are in blue; fated to suffer and be left behind.
fin.

I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say we desperately want to hear all your baal and lucifer thoughts!! I’m foaming at the mouth begging for crumbs, barking like a wild dog
Warning for major Angels & Man spoilers. I'm sorry for this long essay but I'm stuck in a lecture for this certification thing and bored.
So I'm thinking about immeditaely after the demons re-group and Lucifer leads them in building their caves. Baal falling to Lucifer's feet and swearing his allegiance. He says he's been fighting in honor of Lucifer's memory in all the time that Lucifer has been asleep. Lucifer is angry, though — maybe he slaps him — and he asks why Baal thinks that he's worthy of trying to continue the devil's legacy. Baal apologizes, says he didn't mean to continue it, just protect his memory, to worship him in life and death. Lucifer asks why Baal wants to worship him, Baal says Lucifer is beautiful, and Lucifer glares. Baal adds that Lucifer is powerful and wise, too, but Lucifer's already angry and maybe turns his back on him.
Regardless, Lucifer still offers him the title of duke within a few months. (He might be angry at Baal, but he's probably the most loyal among the demons). Whenever they're alone, Baal tries to touch him, lowers his voice, but Lucifer denies him over and over. It's only until Baal is hopeless, not even trying anymore (sleeping with other random demons), that Lucifer finally takes him to bed. (It was a test; Lucifer wanted to see if Baal would remain loyal even without the promise of sex. Baal has passed, but Lucifer doesn't seem happy with him, he never does.)
Baal carves a room to sleep in close to Lucifer's chambers but not too close. Baal starts modifying his body. He has a fixation on Michael; sometimes, he thinks of how far Lucifer and Michael might've gone in their relationship and pisses himself off. He imagines that Lucifer has become violent because of Michael. He imagines Michael must've hurt Lucifer. Baal tries to make himself stronger and bigger, scarier too.
Baal spends a lot of time beside Lucifer, sees a lot of his spells of anger and grief and violence. He offers to take over some responsibilities. He wants Lucifer to focus on being happier/calmer. Lucifer agrees, but because he plans to use Baal as a way to shift blame; whenever the demons need to be punished, he'll send Baal, whenever things need to get done, he'll have Baal scream at them. The demons will hate Baal and love Lucifer. Lucifer does, however, use most of his new free time to sleep and tend his gardens; so, he is a little calmer, and Baal is happy.
It takes centuries for Lucifer to let Baal actually sleep in his bed. One day, though, I think Lucifer wakes up cold and trembling, and he walks out, sees Baal, walks up to him, grabs him by his tunic, then drags him to cuddle in bed without a word. It takes another long time before Baal gets to sleep there frequently. Lucifer stops kicking him out post-sex; Baal eventually moves his stuff to a tiny corner of Lucifer's chambers, and Lucifer pretends not to notice.
Their relationship is rocky. Lucifer takes out most of his fury on Baal. Baal just takes it, sometimes unsure why he bothers being so loyal, but every time he thinks of stepping away, he comes crawling back.
Cain changes things though. Lucifer becomes a lot gentler. In front of Cain, Lucifer is very sweet and only playfully mean to Baal, and even when Cain isn't there, Lucifer stays a little nicer. Baal sees that the young, sweet Lucifer he loved in Heaven is still alive. Baal also sees Lucifer having meltdowns over Cain's safety, panicking and hyperventilating and pulling his hair out. Baal holds Lucifer tight as he cries and gasps over Cain being hurt or lost.
I'm trying not to ramble too much about Cain right now, but I think Cain mends a lot of their relationship. Lucifer is a little gentler, and Baal sees how hurt Lucifer really is. And they both adore Cain, even after everything that happens with Abel. Lucifer is a mess when Cain walks off on his own after the murder, and Baal is there for Lucifer.
So why is Lucifer still so mean to Baal in A&M? A part of it is an act. A part of it is trying to push Baal away. A part of it is trying to push himself away. Lucifer doesn't want to love anymore. Love drove him crazy in the past. He especially doesn't want to fall for someone like Baal, who he thinks isn't very bright or powerful or special. But.... Baal holds him really tenderly sometimes and Lucifer feels safe. And even happy, sometimes.

So I heard about baalcifer rant but what about MOOLCIFER and their love hate relationship that broke my heart because I NEED IT! Like screaming shaking throwing up because I can’t say much but Michael’s internal thoughts were killing me
Michael and Lucifer.... okay let me ramble about them too. Spoilers for Angels & Man below the cut.
They're made for each other, and they know that. Maybe God did it by accident, but he made them that way regardless. And I think that thought was very romantic in ABM, when they were innocently holding hands and pecking each other's lips like birds. I think half the fun of wrestling or laying together was feeling how perfectly their bodies fit together. When Michael puts his hands on Lucifer's cheeks or his waist or his hips, it's like they lock into place.
But God is a jealous God, so he punishes Lucifer (and not Michael, at least not initially). Lucifer was promised by Michael that he'd protect him, and he wholeheartedly believes in him, so he keeps waiting and waiting for Michael to save him, to kill God and take him away. To take him back to Earth maybe. (in vain i love you, the dawn streaming onto you, but there is no dawn in heaven, only on earth; lucifer wants to see the dawn with michael again). But Michael — well, he's the angel of strength, everyone adores him because he's so strong and big and muscular and beefy (and everyone is super gay). maybe he, at some point, worried that he was the angel of pain, but that was long ago now.
I don't think Michael has any strength at all. He has God-given strength but none of his own. He's never had to become strong. When he's finally put in a situation where he has to build a little strength of his own, he completely fails. When Lucifer tries to sleep with Michael, he cries. There's no pride in him, there never was, or that little bit of pride is really just God's, a tiny reflection of God. God made Lucifer to adore him, then made his chief prince a little too much like Himself; he made Lucifer and Michael for each other, without meaning to, maybe.
And so the fall happens and Lucifer is mad. Michael was a coward and a liar. he couldn't muster up the courage to even sleep with him. He didn't save him.
For a while, Lucifer just rots. He plays dead. He feels dead. He's so angry at Michael that he hates him almost as much as God. He thinks that maybe Michael was just like God in the end; Michael liked him as an adornment, as a beautiful angel to sing him songs and serve him drinks. Lucifer hates him, hates him, hates him. He gets up, finally, and gathers the demons, and he's so angry at Michael he thinks he'll dismember him next time he sees him.
Michael, though, is confused and upset. After cutting off Lucifer's wings, his hands are bloody and he's thinking, 'What have I done?' . When God binds him, he's scared. Why did he do that? Was that wrong? What happened? And now he's being tortured and immediately regrets what he's done. And he cries for Lucifer, begins to dream of him. God tells Michael that this is all his fault. He says Michael killed Lucifer when he loved him, maybe Michael didn't fuck him but he might as well have. Satan is the beast that Michael has made because he loved something more than he loved God, and now he is responsible for all the horrors Satan committed. Michael keeps dreaming of Lucifer, but this time he dreams ends in blood.
In A&M, Michael is sent to Earth as God's sword, and he slaughters everything in his way. He thinks this is the only way to stop Satan; that's what God has told him. Michael must punish the angels who fell for love, and he must bring Satan back to Heaven to be restored; Michael is certain this entire ordeal is his opportunity to redeem himself.
They finally meet again. Michael sees Satan, the monster he's made. Lucifer sees Michael, a lowly coward he stupidly loved once. Oh they hate each other. They want to rip each other apart but Michael is on a mission, and Lucifer is playing a long game, trying to buy time before the end of all things.
But there's something much worse that happens after they see each other again: they realize they still want each other. It doesn't matter what happened; they still feel like they were made for each other. Michael is praying for God to keep his head clear and Lucifer is furious. Michael thinks he craves a monster (and he keeps trying to squash all his obsessive thinking of beautiful sweet excitable angel Lucifer) and Lucifer thinks being attracted to Michael is embarrassing and pathetic and against his own morals. Liking Michael, to Lucifer, is liking God.
So all Lucifer can do is laugh, make fun of him. Invite him into his home as a way to control him. And it does work to an extent. Once, Lucifer needed Michael to teach him how to fight. Now, it's Lucifer doing the teaching. He's the one in control now.
They have that moment in that room. They fight. They rub and finish on each other. Michael is fantasizing of finishing inside of Lucifer, yadda yadda. But this doesn't satisfy them. Nothing will satisfy them until they're one, and they know it.
At the end of things, Michael decides not to drag Lucifer to God; he doesn't want to anymore, suddenly. He can't make himself do it. In ABM, he handed Lucifer to God without question, but here.... he doesn't. And worse, Michael sees the flood come and go, and nothing is any better. He did not redeem himself, and Lucifer was not restored. What was the point? Why did he do any of this?
But he'll go back to Heaven, and he's going to dream about Lucifer again. He's going to bring his hand to his mouth and suck on his fingers, thinking of how Lucifer felt. How they were made for each other, no matter how much they despise that now. And Lucifer is going to try to kill his love again, over and over, until the end of time.

Hello Rafa~ I first wanted to say that you completely and utterly destroyed me with Angels and Man. There's genuinely no way that I could properly recover from it and I'm in an endless period of mourning rn. Secondly, I was wondering if you had any ship names "confirmed" for your main pairings. I've seen BaalLucifer and AsmoRosier thrown out a lot but what about Lucifer and Michael? And maybe Azazel and Samyaza?
Hello!! Thank you for reading!! I'm sorry you were destroyed, but I hope it was a fun ride!! :') it destroyed me too!
I guess that I do have ship names? I usually use them when discussing the couples to, say, my friends. I'm open to anyone arguing about them but I usually say:
Moocifer - Michael Lucifer
Baalcifer - Baal Lucifer
Moobaalcifer - Michael Baal Lucifer (yes, really)
Asmosier - Asmodeus Rosier
Sazazel - Samyaza Azazel
Barakoka - Baraqiel Kokabiel
Phandina - Phanuel Dina (this one was sort of a joke but theyre kind of cute together)
Gaphael/Gap/Rabriel - Gabriel Raphael (Cannot decide)
anyway, thank you again for reading A&M! It's a long book so make sure to rest now :) thank u for the kind words too!
