Are there writing coaches/consultants specifically for neurodivergent and/or chronically ill people? Because I think that’s a job I’d be great at, honestly.

I’ve helped so many friends and followers untangle snags in their stories and their world-building, fine-tune their writing process to suit their unique needs, problem-solve various issues related to writing and creating, and I’ve got experience with various conditions of my own that seem to grant me an empathetic, judgement-free perspective.

Working on this series of posts aimed at supporting neurodivergent, disabled, snd chronically ill writers is emphasizing to me just how far I’ve come, how much information I’ve gained on this topic, and how much more I could be doing to help others accomplish their creativity goals.

I dunno, just thinkin’ thoughts over here…

I'm really enjoying Tearmoon Empire much more than I thought I would as I usually tire of these 'reincarnated in an otome setting with knowledge of how it goes down' deals pretty fast, but TE stands out a lot to me with Mia still retaining many shades of her past self - she's conniving and vindictive and selfish - which makes scenes like this where she's genuinely moved by Abel much more rewarding.

Go on about how this is for building up allies in the future all you like Mia, it's doki doki time for you!!

It's always odd to see someone go "there are great moments in Rogue One but there's a weakness at the heart of it, which is [fill in the blank]" because ... I mean, I love RO, but I have delivered criticisms of it and I stand by them! But that critique is the exact opposite of how I see it.

I still think Rogue One is a film that is extremely strong at the heart, both in the more sentimental sense of "heart" and in the sense of the most essential cinematic elements (direction, acting, cinematography, music in itself and how it's used in the film, etc). Its weaknesses are less core issues: the script is a bit uneven, the pacing sometimes erratic.

Also, almost everything that does get brought up in the [fill in the blank] takes seems laughably wrong to me.

I recently saw an article complaining about the inclusion of Vader and the Imperial office politics. Despite the main appeal of the movie being Cassian and Jyn for me, I actually loved both Rogue One's depiction of Anakin (one of my absolute faves) and the office politics.

Vader's homicidal dad jokes are a) fabulous and b) were already canon, and I will fight on this, and you get a sense of how suffocating his life is and yet how dreadful and terrifying he is. Also, the office politics really work for me in giving a sense of the mundanity of the Empire's evil. I mean ... it reminded me of nothing so much as my best friend's stories of working at Amazon as a programmer before he decided the check wasn't worth it and left. Also, I found the Imperial dynamics entertaining as well. A movie that crowded could have afforded less of that, maybe—I do still think the story and supporting cast would have benefited from two films or a limited mini-series—but that's not some core weakness, it's a minor pacing issue. I wouldn't want that excised completely.

Sometimes [fill in the blank] is a complaint that the acting is too understated or something, but I think it's exactly the right amount of understated, and that the sometimes wobbly script is elevated by top-tier performances from the actors and the great chemistry among the cast.

Also, while quite a few people have made the "Rogue One has one terrible weakness alongside its strong points" argument, they rarely seem to agree on what the one terrible weakness is. But yeah, it's definitely the case for me that it does have weaknesses, but weaknesses I would consider peripheral matters rather than core matters. The heart is just fine.

On your Equestria Girls rewrite, pretty tragic how Sunset used to be friends with the Rainbooms (albeit only close with Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy back then), what was the reason why she turned mean? And what caused her initial friendship with the Rainbooms to end before the first movie's events?

Sunset Shimmer in the first movie has a gigantic yet fragile ego, so I took that and made it into her fatal flaw: it's a horrible superiority complex hiding some unaddressed abandonement issues. And the root of all that is her attachment to Celestia and the (very misguided but unfortunately not entirely wrong) belief that Twilight replaced her as Celestia's favourite. It was the reason she first portal-hopped into the human world (rather than the "ough i want so much power" from the comics).

In the human world, she no longer had "God's Specialest Girl" privileges, but that actually helped her heal a bit. A mix of RD's tough love and Fluttershy's kindness made her mellow out a bit, and despite still not being a saint (she is rather prickly), it was enough to let her walls down and consider the human 5 her friends. And despite not telling them the entire truth about equestria and ponies and all that, she eventually tells them her backstory, in a roundabout way. And they manage to convince her that maybe it was a really rash decision to run away from home, and she should at least give her "family" a chance to prove to her that they still love and appreciate her.

So she goes back to Equestria when the portal opens again, ready to confront Celestia and/or Twilight. And she sees this

And she recognizes the ponies in the stained glass.

And she sees Twilight there among them, right where she would've been.

And it proves in her head that she was right all along. That Twilight really did replace her. And worse, that rather than fighting for her rightful place as Celestia's champion, she'd just left and allowed Twilight to take it without raising a hoof.

She loses it.

She runs back through the mirror (not without startling a few of the castle staff) and, irrationally furious, lashes out at the human 5 for... a lot of things, really. For convincing her to go back, for betraying her like that (she knows her friends aren't really the ponies in the stained glass, but she's having a breakdown and her mind is kinda conflating her two lives together), etc etc. She becomes extremely inflammatory and unfriendly (can't be abandoned if you push everyone away first), though for some incomprehensible reason RD and Flutters stick around, and decides that she will indeed return and exact her revenge against the world that did not value her as they should have. (Just like a certain Princess of the Night)

That's where we find her at the beginning of the rewrite.
