for modern AU fics - what chinese media did diaspora consume?
making this post because some of us in the diaspora server were having a chat about what Chinese media "Diaspora Chinese" watched in the 90's - 2000's (and even sooner than that) while not having access to satellite chinese media or streaming services - this is in the context of writing modern AU fics based off Chinese media/novels (so your main character's grandpa or uncle is not, in fact, watching an episode of Friends or Shortland Street or something as flavour text because sorry what the hell-)
We generally watched a lot of stuff on VCDs, including bootlegged and non-bootlegged movies, shows, anime/donghua. My household had a whole VCD album of this, and a lot of VCDs (even if they were pirated editions) would have a fancy hardcover box with a magnetic clasp and some artwork representing the show on it.
All of this is Mandarin - so not TVB stuff, because I'm from Northern China and I don't know any cantonese - but Canto friends, please feel free to add to the list! This is mostly stuff my parents liked to watch, or I liked to watch with them, with the exception of a few which I mainly watched with friends/cousins when I was maybe (in most cases) eleven/twelve years old onwards. This is a pretty personal list, meant to give people general idea of a possible "ballpark" of sorts, and by no means exhaustive.
Now, for the list of shows which I can confirm I had or someone I know had on VCD or some kind of offline media format lol (I'll try add release year stamps and links to the EN wikipedia where possible):
Period dramas (mostly Qing Dynasty stuff):
Huan Zhu Gege 还珠格格 (1998, April-) This is a classic, so many memes come from this show; hugely popular series, basically cemented Zhang Tie Lin's face as the face of the Qing Emperor for about a decade. Tie Chi Tong Ya Ji Xiao Lan 铁齿铜牙纪晓岚 (2002-2010) - I loved this show as a kid and watched all four seasons on repeat with family... The "trio" in this show are well known and loved.
Amazing Detective Di Ren Jie / 神探狄仁杰 (2004) A very popular and addictive show. Ok now the Big Four:
Romance of 3 kingdoms 1994 / 三国演义 (1994) - a classic that has had many remakes, my older cousin would play this on repeat...
Hong Lou Meng/红楼梦 (1987) - another classic with many remakes, but I think the most recognised by the public one is the 1987 one.
Journey to the West / 西游记 live action (1986) - I think the 1986 version of the live action is the most recognised one. *Shui Hu Zhuan / 水浒传 (1998) - I am not too familliar with the live action of this one in my household tbh bc my mum doesn't like it lol (she keeps saying it's too depressing) but I'm sure it's up there with the rest of the big four, if anyone has an opinion on this one please let me know!
Modern setting shows:
My dad loved all the Sun Honglei (孙红雷 - actor name) stuff, iirc it was a lot of MinGuo period espionage stuff, your shanghai 1920's sxc aesthetic. This actor has been around since 1999? Qian Fu (潜伏)was very famous, and Ren Jian Zheng Dao Shi Cang Sang (人间正道是沧桑)。 These were around '08 and '09.
Chuang Guan Dong - 闯关东 (2008) (Baidu link, sorry - couldn't get an EN wikipedia one). This show was huge when it was airing, everyone was watching it. I was pretty young but even I watched it and got invested ... and I thought it was such an "old person" show at the time lmao. Xiao Bing Zhang Ga / 小兵张嘎 (2004) (sorry, again Baidu link) - yo, anti-japanese war movies set between 1937-1945 were crazy popular - this is one of them and was very popular):
Donghua/Anime (all the stuff kid me watched and some which I didn't but were popular):
喜羊羊与灰太狼 (2005-) Calabash Brothers / 葫芦兄弟 (1986-1987) Black Cat Detective / Hei Mao Jing Zhang 黑猫警长 (1984-2010) Lan Mao Tao Qi 3000 Wen 蓝蓝猫淘气3000问 AKA 蓝猫 (blue cat) (October 1999 - Present) Legend of Ne Zha 哪吒传奇 (2003) Journey to the West/Xi You Ji 西游记 This was truly the Donghua I grew up on from when I was a bb, the OP song and ED song are classic bangers all kids know. Slam Dunk/ 灌篮高手 - People truly watched a lot of anime that may or may not have been terribly dubbed into mando (possibly canto too). Late 80s and 90s kids were all over this, and Dragon Ball, Crayon Shinchan (labixiaoxin).
Taiwanese Dramas:
This is mid-late 2000's, I would be remiss to not talk about the Taiwanese dramas of this era. Mike He, Rainie Yang, Wu Zun (amongst many, many others) were huge. Stuff like Dou Niu Yao Bu Yao, it started with a kiss, Hua Yang Shao Nv (Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi) were all pretty popular. Not sure if these shows all hold up in 2023, but boy were they popular at the time.
Note about CNY:
For CNY, people would try to tune into 春节联欢晚会 (the CCTV official CNY show) at that One Friend Who Had China Satellite TV's house. Zhao Ben Shan / 赵本山 was a comedy staple, and the show would often feature people from the music industry to perform. Eventually these people became more and more relevant to my gen and Jay Chou etc started appearing.
Last but not least Xian Jiaaaan 仙剑:
In 2005 I was all over 仙剑奇侠传 (Chinese Paladin), based off the video game. This show was crazy popular and probably sent me and a whole lot of other kids into Xianxia / Wuxia hell (and Hu Ge hell, and later I came back to love Liu Yifei). Thank you. The OST is a true banger.

My unpopular opinion about the current state of cdrama is that the episode limit (40) is the least of its problems. I’m old enough to remember when 30-40 episodes were the norm and anything 50+ was saved for true epics, like the Legend of Zhen Huan. Modern dramas (especially the idol ones) were 20-30 episodes and that was perfect. I actually think a lot of dramas could still get done and get done well in less than 40 episodes.
For me, the real issue is CCP’s content censorship and the increasingly idol led nature of dramas. Most dramas just feel so … empty, for a lack of better word.
(I miss BBJX)

Well the ending is a disaster.
Honestly am not surprised - youku’s last big ticket xianxia was Immortal Samsara and it had a complete disaster of an ending (also last two xianxias ChongZi and The Starry Night had messed up endings) + TTJ did bad stuff during mortal arc so censors won’t be keen on his happy ending + they had no time (this thing is already more crammed than a Tokyo train at rush hour) + the last quarter of the drama was an incoherent if beautiful in terms of acting and visuals mess (don’t depart from the novel unless you are the screenwriter for LBFAD!)
Also I hate any type of ending unless it makes sense. Tragic? Great - Goodbye My Princess and One and Only and BBJX had masterpieces of tragic endings. But here this feels instead as “Hi! see Goth Jesus put on this earth to suffer for you and die to redeem you, but unlike OG Jesus he looks fab doing it!” And open endings can be good too (a lot of people hated Novoland Eagle Flag’s open ending but it was so utterly fitting to its narrative and message!) Bur here it’s not even open for thematic reasons but to get benefits of both sides and to just try to wiggle and wiggle (and not even properly open, just a little bit to throw crumbs for kicks) How narratively cowardly!
Anyway, goodbye hot mess! You were glorious for a good portion of your run and by the time the stupid ending happened you were a mess for so long I am emotionally fine other than irritation so best of both worlds?
PS this is the same screenwriter as for HYX and all of a sudden I am feeling copacetic with not seeing that drama. It’s bad they fucked up a novel and characters I liked, it would be horrific if their grubby hands screwed up 2ha and Mo Ran and Chu Wanning.
PPS On plus side, single mom SuSu can now relive their sex tape any time she feels blue.

ON RUOXI AND HAE SOO DEBATE
Many call Hae soo dumb and compare her to Ruoxi and I have to emphasise , time and time again Ruoxi knew what she was getting into , knew the place, time and people.
Hae Soo did not .
Ruoxi was lucky and privileged on so many levels . Everyone knew she was different and even in the rigid institution such as the Place make allowances for her, because they find her cute and smart.
The princes , on her side trying to help and mediate for her.
Her sister, on her side , as always and she is alive for most of the drama.
The Palace servants who adore her.
Her enemies? They respect her and even make friends with her.
The King, on her side, she defies him to many times and he does punish her , but he also forgives and takes her back.
The Head Enuch, who cherishes her.
The Mongols and Princess Minmin, who cherish and forgive her.
Both eighth , fourth and fourteenth who loved her and fought for her.
The Empress, who agreed to let her have a relationship with the king, and tried to convince the Emperor to take her back.
It’s uncanny for all the realism that the story is trying to convey, that Ruoxi had this many characters supporting her, and everything was set up for her to accept and adjust into the Qing life but she still refused to accept it, because things didn’t go the way she envisioned. And by trying to stop them , recklessly, she only made things worse. She just cannot accept it , though there were little dangers and abuse awaiting her life in the palace.
Meanwhile,Hae Soo is out here , stuck in a system she neither understands or supports .
From the moment she gets there, she is always put in danger.
From being under suspicion for spying bathing princes to beating up a prince.
Nobody listened to Hae Soo, or allowed her to exercise her own free will.
When she is in the Palace, the King is quick to remind her to know her place.
She had visions from the future, that seem to hit her whenever she’s able to make a decision that the universe wouldn’t agree with it.
The princes are eager to play with her and romance her and this puts her in danger, as we can clearly see court ladies bullying her and Court lady Oh punishing her.
Jimong is eager to use her for his own benefit of making fourth prince king, but he never gives her advice on how she can live for herself.
All the princes who claim to love her impose their own will on her and expect her to take their side at everything.
Her enemies like Yeonhwa love blaming her for everything , framing her and then using her when necessary.
And she was tortured and was never treated well.
Her mother figures died early.
Everyone from water maids to the mighty royals love placing the blame on her for just about everything, beating her up and bullying her.
On top of that, two of the men she loved didn’t even understand an aota of her feelings and schemed and pushed her away because they couldn’t handle their own jealousy.
To top that, everyone was always watching her and spying on her.
Nobody even listened to her to begin with .
The question you should ask yourself is , is this women even allowed to show that she is smart?
When she is not even listened to ?
When the tiniest choice and involvement gets her framed and puts her in danger with no one on her side, is it even reasonable for someone to expect her to scheme and act arrogant, as if she’s a Royal when she’s not ?
Because, honestly there’s no point in fighting over who’s smarter without even analysing the circumstances they were put in or what privileges and choices they were afforded.
Bbjx was very much a story of how individual flaws lead to destruction and affect human relationships.
Scarlet Heart was very much a story of two flawed people who couldn’t be together because it was unconventional and too dangerous for it’s time.

i think the other most 打脸 thing about this is that I ever thought my crush on LGX has faded since the days of BBJX... Then I go and watch the Legend of Shen Li and it's like ... oh no ... He's still (very) hot

my dream svsss live action cast
Part 1
this really started out as a jokey post because it had clicked in my mind who the absolutely Perfect actor for shang qinghua would be but then i was all🤔🤔who else would i put in a svsss live action if i had a choice??
most actors are from dramas i’ve already seen or at least have heard of....pics mostly from screencaps or dramalist
Original Shen Qingqiu - Wang Duo
Tumblr media
LISTEn. LISTEN TO ME.... i am gently holding ur shoulders as i say this!! (accept no substitutes!!! which is deeply ironic considering what does happen to sqq in-story but :’‘))
elegant, coolly calculating and vicious, prideful with these glass shards moments of vulnerability...what can't this man do??
Luo Binghe - (Older version) Chen Zheyuan
Tumblr media
i never did watch him in handsome siblings, but i did enjoy the way he played his character in Mr. Bad....i like how...hmm easy he finds it to fluidly change between these expressions of slightly wicked/sly and definitely more innocent and vulnerable, which could be fun for older/sorta of toasted marshmallow blackened luo binghe...the younger 14-yr old white lotus!lbh would likely be played by a different actor but i have no strong opinions on that
Tumblr media
honorable mention for another lbh choice that was considered - Richard Yi from the webdrama series ‘has xianzun been whitewashed yet today?’ (ie in the meaning of cleaning up his bad reputation)
(while it Was pretty tempting to put down someone like luo yunxi for lbh i ended up not doing that---he does possess the requisite levels of dramatic evil presence and feral fury and resentment, i think he might lack a little bit hmmmm that kind of softer, more youthful side that lbh would still show maybe)
Shang Qinghua - Tian Yu
Tumblr media
...hey like. his whole acting in joy of life....Is he Not the Perfect choice????
the entire smiley while seemingly being obsequious and awkwardly uncool (obsessed w/ money all the time, his top fighting skill being RUNNING AWAY with his qigong), while ALSO having these good moments of adaptable cunning under a supposedly harmless exterior...... o w o
Mobei-jun - Nicky Wu
Tumblr media
idk what to say for this one (◕ᴗ◕✿) (◕ᴗ◕✿) scarlet heart/bbjx was Both deeply formative and also hecked up my brain chemistry a Ton, but if u need a character who is the strong Silent type but also exudes killing intent/pressure and a regal aura...i think he could pull it off for sure
Part 2 for this post for my headcanon casting of other characters would be incoming at some point. PART 2 OF HEADCANON SVSSS CAST HERE.
do feel free to interact with this post in the replies though
