7-Year-Old Girl Swinging in Hammock Killed When Tree Uproots: It Is a 'Tragic Accident'

Sabina Surjit Henderson, a 7-year-old girl from Virginia, was killed on Saturday when a tree toppled over and struck her as she swung in a hammock at a family gathering, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office confirms to PEOPLE. The second grade student from Brambleton and her 8-year-old cousin were being pushed by another child when the tree the hammock was tied to uprooted and fell on top of them. Emergency personnel responded to the scene shortly after 6 p.m. local time, and Sabina was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Annandale. “The 7-year-old female received life-threatening injuries,” Kraig Troxell of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office tells PEOPLE. “She was airlifted from the scene and later succumbed to those injuries and passed away on Saturday.” The 8-year-old boy, who was transported to the hospital by ambulance, received non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released, Troxell adds. Both children were visiting the property — an 1870s farmhouse that is now used as a bed and breakfast in Purcellville, FOX 5 reported — for a family celebration. “It’s my understanding that it was the grandparent’s property, that it was a celebration for the grandfather, and it was a family gathering at that house,” Troxell says. They had been playing on the hammock throughout the day, with relatives close by. The tree was also “very old,” Troxell notes. “All indications are that this is a tragic accident,” he explains. “There have been some questions about whether rain played a factor. I think there’s probably a couple of factors, but the ground is very soft right now.” In a statement to NBC 4, Sabina’s father, Ben Henderson, described his daughter as an intelligent and humorous girl who brightened up the lives of all who knew her. “Sabina was smart, witty girl who loved to tell jokes and make other people laugh,” Henderson, who did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment, said in his statement to the news station. “She was a powerful personality that lit up the room and was a memorable force for all those that met her. She was amazingly kind and thoughtful to her friends and family. Sabina was genuinely and completely loved by all that knew her. Her loss tore a giant hole in our lives that will never be mended. We will never recover from this, we will only survive.” The family is holding a memorial service for Sabina on September 28 in Brambleton. http://bit.ly/2xCiBKg

The start of a new beginning

It all started on April 5 the day that I will never forget. It was a hot humid spring day I remember walking out of the apartment building with great joy. Today was my elementary schools annual field day, walking in to the school I could smell the excitement in all my fellow class mates. The day was filled with water balloons, popsicle and physical workouts. But all that would not help me prepare for what was going to face when I get home. I walk in to my home with my two younger sisters screaming for joy and my older sister crying her eyes out. Being the middle child I was not sure how I would react to this. My mother and my father sat me down but before they could say it my younger sister said, “WHERE MOVING”. When I first heard I was excited as can be but then it hit me. I would be leaving everything that I knew all my friends, family and teachers…. Ok didn’t really care about my teachers but my friends and family was a big concern.

I was going over the pros and cons with moving although the day but in the middle of the night it hit me. Where are we moving? The suspense was too much I jumped out of my sleeping chambers and ran down the hall to my parent’s room jumped on their bed and screamed where are we moving? My father looks at me with the same face he makes when he pays his bills. With a stinky breath, my father said Loudoun county the first thing that popped in my head was where in the world is Loudoun county. The next morning, I woke up went on my family’s desk top and before I could search where Loudoun county is my mother told me to go to school. So, I went to school and on my way to my classroom I was imagining in my head what Loudoun county would be like maybe with ice cream stores at every corner and roller coasters instead of cars. I remember my teacher waking me up from my day dreams and asking me to solve some math problem and I answered the problem with the color purple. Everyone in the class stared laughing at me in my head I was feeling sorry for these guys because they would still be here.

After school was over I ran to my house straight to the computer screen. I went on google and search” London” instead of a Loudoun county as a kid I couldn’t tell the different. I would look at the imagines and see things like big ben and the London eye the minute I saw all the images I jumped out of my chair like a monkey and started to dance. My mother saw me dancing and she asked me “Why are you dancing”? I told her that I was so excited to move she looked at me with a smile in her face. The next day at school I said bye to all my friends and my teachers, packed all my books and pencils. My father picked me up from school and told me that tomorrow was moving day.

I was so excited I went straight to sleep when I got home. I woke up the next day at seven to my parents eating breakfast while the rest of my family was asleep. My father told me told me that he would be bring in the moving truck and if I wanted to come. I screamed to the top of my lungs YES so laud that I woke up my whole family. I got ready and went with my dad to get the moving truck. I remembered the drive back I was so excited that I would jump up and down from my seat. We got back to the house and my father and a bunch of his friends helped us load all of our stuff to the moving truck. After we paced all of our stuff my father brought are car and we were on are way to are new life.

I was stuck to the window looking out for the London eye and BIG ben. We drove for like an hour and we were there. I looked out of my window with disappointment asking my dad where is the London eye and big ben. My father started laughing and said that big ben and the London eye are in London. I asked my dad aren’t we moving there my dad laughed again and said were moving to Loudoun county in Virginia. When I heard the words Virginia my heart dropped. The disappointment on my face was priceless. I got out of the car and went inside my new house the house was full of that new paint smell. I remembered being so sad that I ran outside to my back-yard where I was greeted to this boy named Joey. It turned out that Joey was the same age as me we played for the rest of the day together. My mother called me in for dinner. I remember walking to my house thinking that this place may not be that bad.

As sustainability and meeting experts, The National has identified five trends for meeting planners to consider when booking a Green Venue for their meeting. 1.The Grass Is Always Greener – When doing a site visit, take a look around. Is there a lot of outdoor space for attendees to take a walk, or a hike, or to sit quietly? Having a facility with outdoor space that is relaxing--even a space to meditate, is a natural way to encourage attendees to unwind. The National is set on 65 acres in the countryside of Loudoun County, and the grounds are covered with drought-resistant plants, trees, shrubs and/or native plants to minimize water use. The property is irrigated only when necessary and mulched plant beds are used to retain water. An integrated pest management program has also been implemented to research the use of organic insecticides and fertilizers. That’s how the grass stays “green”! 2.Food For Thought – Studies have shown that eating high-protein foods and less sugar keeps up energy, brainpower and focus. Pick a venue that understands the value of healthy food and breaks. Check out healthy recipes and a sampling of our Breakfast of Champions menu, developed by The National for meeting planners who look for healthy menu options. Taking it a step further, over 60 different food products have been purchased from Food Hub, which represents over 30 farms in Virginia and Maryland. Menus are created based on what is available during the season. Blueberry Power Shakes or Eggs Benedict with a Yogurt Hollandaise Sauce are just a few ideas. 3.Energy Savers – The most obvious way to see if a venue has sustainability as one of its mission statements is to look for energy-saving options. The National uses motion sensors in guest rooms to determine when rooms are unoccupied in order to maintain energy-saving heating and cooling. Also ask if the property utilizes an efficient energy management program to operate their Central Utility Plant. This saves a great deal of energy compared to operating the plant manually. The National recently completed a 5-year energy lighting plan to replace all lights with energy-efficient light bulbs. Every time The National replaces equipment in the meeting rooms (computers, monitors, copiers, etc.), guest rooms (TVs, etc.) or in the culinary program (refrigerators, freezers, ovens, dishwashers, etc.) only Energy Star-rated equipment is purchased. Ask the Chef if the last appliance they purchased was Energy Star-rated. 4.Logistics – Paperless check-in, digital brochures and uploading handouts to a website are just a few ways a conference planning department can help keep the paper count down. Ask your venue how water is provided. Plastic bottles are out; ceramic coolers with reusable cups are in. Use environmentally-friendly paper products (napkins, paper towels, etc.) that are biodegradable and recyclable. The National maintains a Waste Management Contract for single-stream recycling for glass, plastic, aluminum, metal, wood, cardboard and paper. Soon the property hopes to eliminate even the printed map of the complex given to every guest by developing an app for wayfinding. 5.Get Involved – Working with the local community or “paying it forward” may be a great way to tie your green mission to our green mission. The National can help organize a river cleanup program near Potomac River or the creek flowing through the property. We work very closely with our neighbor, Riverside High School, who can create a culinary team with students to learn about farm-to-table cooking. Work with one of many local charities to help clean a park or build a section of a home similar to Habitat for Humanity. The National’s conference planning department has many contacts in the local community. With its reputation as an outstanding member of IACC, The National has hosted thousands of learning and training meetings and conferences over the years and has perfected the meeting experience.
