I love roadtrips. Last summer, we did two weeks from Manhattan to Bar Harbor, Maine. It was all the incredible food, museums, and hiking a girl could want.
In Manhattan, we decided to take a day exploring of Central Park, starting at the southern end, and working up to the northern end where Harlem begins. I like to call it urban hiking. If you get to the very middle of the northern end (Some maps and signs say Lenox Avenue and some say Malcolm X Blvd – same thing) and keep walking another 16 blocks north (corner of 126th), you hit an amazing restaurant, Red Rooster Harlem. (There’s a subway stop right across from the restaurant if walking’s not your jam or if you’re using a cab, it’s 310 Lenox Ave.) It’s Marcus Samuelsson’s place, and it oozes cool and everything’s delicious. I picked up a baseball cap there, and couldn’t seem to put it away the rest of the trip. What can I say?! It loves hiking!
Summit of Cadillac Mountain. Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor, ME
Stephen King’s house. Bangor, ME.
I fell in love with the book, The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem, first. Everything was wonderful, but his cornbread was the best cornbread I’d ever had. There are a lot of cornbread recipes I love, but his really stands out. A huge thanks to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for letting me share it with you. Don’t skip the sage honey butter in the notes! Who knew that sage belonged in honey butter? Marcus did. And it does. My review of the book is right after the recipe.
If you love it, please come find me again or hit that follow button! 😀
CORN BREAD is excerpted from THE RED ROOSTER COOKBOOK © 2016 by Marcus Samuelsson. Reproduced by permission of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. All rights reserved.
Corn Bread
Makes 1 (9-x-5-inch) loaf
This is right up there with the Fried Yardbird as a core recipe at the Rooster. We even have someone dedicated to making all our corn bread. Charles Webb, a former Alvin Ailey dancer, is the keeper of our secrets.
I knew from the beginning how I wanted it to taste, but we continue to tinker and change the recipe. This version is very moist, almost custardy. It will keep for 4 days, but a better plan is to freeze individual slices.
1 cup cake flour 1 cup coarse yellow cornmeal ¾ cup sugar 2¼ teaspoons baking powder 1½ teaspoons Aleppo pepper 1½ teaspoon s coarse kosher salt 1¾ cups sour cream 1½ cups buttermilk 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled ⅔ cup corn kernels (fresh or thawed frozen)
1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Spray a 9-x-5-inch loaf pan with pan spray. 2. Whisk the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, Aleppo pepper, and salt together in a bowl. 3. Whisk the sour cream, buttermilk, eggs, yolk, and melted butter together in another bowl until smooth. 4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until combined. Fold in the corn. 5. Scrape the batter into the loaf pan and smooth out the top. Bake until the bread is browned and pulling away from the sides of the pan and a skewer poked into the center comes out clean, about 60 minutes. 6. Cool on a rack for 20 minutes. Run a knife around the sides of the pan to loosen the sides and turn out the loaf. You can cut it now—the slices will be messy—or cool completely.
There are plenty of things to spread on cornbread – like either the Bird Funk or Chicken Liver Butter (both on page 82) – but I do love the way sage honey butter melts into the bread when it’s warm: Beat 2 Tablespoons honey and 12 ripped fresh sage leaves into 8 Tablespoons (1 stick) softened, unsalted butter. Check it for salt. Cover and refrigerate the honey butter for at least an hour to give the sage a chance to work its flavor into the butter, but take it out of the refrigerator at least 15 minutes before serving.
My review of the book…..
The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem by Marcus Samuelsson Edition: Hardcover
I love this book. The recipes we’ve tried were all delicious and interesting! He’s an intense flavorist – not an apologetic bite to be found. There are cool photos throughout. I love making playlists to go along with cookbooks, and Marcus includes his own playlists, chapter by chapter. It’s just frosting on the cake, but I really appreciate good frosting.
He was born in Ethiopia, grew up in Sweden, and then moved to New York, and he brings all of that to the book. If you want more of his story, Yes, Chef: A Memoir is fantastic, and he narrates the audiobook himself.
My thoughts and pics of the dishes we tried: 1) Obama’s Short Ribs – p168, Spicy Sweets and Green Beans with Spiced Butter – p170 & 62, and Cornbread with Honey Sage Butter – p63. Holy wow! Is that ever a terrific dinner! The ribs braise in wine, stock, ginger, lemongrass, etc, and they’re tender as can be. The cornbread is easily the best I’ve ever had, and the sweet potato green bean dish is face meltingly spicy, and yummy, packed with Berbere seasoning and fresh jalapeños. 2) Mac and Greens – p119 with Killer Collards – p123 in Spiced Butter – p62. I can see why customers wouldn’t let him take it off the menu. Two pounds of collard greens simmer in a half pound of the spiced butter. I thought it was excessive til I tasted it. Ridiculously, wonderfully decadent. This is the perfect entree when you have vegetarian friends coming over. Yeah, you’ll get all the hugs. 3-4) Shrimp Bird and Grits – p 204. I was flipping through the book at the library, and noted about 50 recipes I wanted to try, and then saw this one. You fry two chicken thighs, then immediately separate the meat from the skin and toss it on a cooling rack. The meat gets shredded and tossed into grits with pimento cheese. Top that with a poached egg and tomato-y shrimp. Then you blitz the chicken skin with Saltine crackers and parmesan in the food processor to create “bird dust” that gets sprinkled over the whole thing. Chicken dust?! That’s the stuff of fairies, and the sort of fairies that you really want to visit. I hit the buy button on Amazon right in the middle of the library, and I’m so glad I did! This is beautiful.
Do you write in your books? If you do, this is a time sensitive one, so I find it really helpful to scribble out a timeline. 5-6) I think this could win over the biggest brussels-phobe. Brussels Sprouts with Bacon Dip – p295, and Peanut Bacon Pork Chops – p214. The dip is a homemade bacon mayonnaise made with the bacon grease, then the bacon is folded back in. Best dinner so far! Total wow! 7) Tomato-Watermelon Salad with Burrata and Tomato Seed Vinaigrette – p 242. I made this as a light refreshing dinner on a hot summer night. It hit the spot. My grocer doesn’t carry burrata anymore, so I went with the creamiest fresh mozzarella they had instead. Blistered tomatoes, pan seared watermelon, garlic, jalapeño, basil, and burrata dressed in balsamic, tomato seed, and olive oil. Really harmonious flavors. 8) Fried Yardbird – p 85. I LOVE his chicken shake. Gorgeous seasoning. Brined, then marinated overnight in buttermilk, coconut milk and chicken shake (I gave it two nights because life happened and that was fine), and finally coated, fried, and sprinkled with more chicken shake. Just bring the chicken shake to the table, because someone’s going to want more of that stuff! 9) Rooster Donuts with Sweet Potato Cream – p 186. These are a labor of love, but oh so worth it! The donuts are a little puff pastry-ish, and the sweet potato pastry cream has gorgeous texture and is not overly sweet. The recipe makes a whole army of little donut holes across your counter, but they disappear quickly.
Others I have flagged to try: Cauliflower Frites with Green Mayonnaise – p 56 * Wild Wild Wings – p 81 * BB Roo Chicken Sandwich on a Potato Roll – p 90 * Lemon Chicken with Green Harissa and Roast Eggplant Puree – p 94 * Jerk Bacon and Baked Beans – p 112 * Catfish and Pecans – p 115 * Cordero (Lamb) and Grits with Grilled Chile Vinaigrette – p 150 * Puerco en Cerveza (Pork in beer), Plantains on the side – p 154La Marqueta Pork Tack Tack – p 158 * Aunt Grete’s Beef – p 175 * Yep, Chicken and Waffles – p 210 * Fried Green Tomatoes with Buttermilk Dressing – p 217 * Block Party Ribs with Sweet Q Sauce – p 234 * Andouille Bread Pudding – p 260 * The Breakfast – p 266 * Brown Butter Biscuits – p 314 * Pan Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Dried Cherries and Walnuts – p 340 * The Green Viking (green apple sorbet with caramel) – p 361 * Banana and Pecan Pie – p 372

By Frank Sabatini Jr. | Restaurant Review
The baseball season has arrived and Social Tap brings you as close to the bustle of Petco Park as you can possibly get without holding a ticket into the stadium.
On game days, you can see the big center screen hovering over the playing field from Social Tap’s back patio, which looks out to the grassy lawn leading to the main gates. The front sidewalk patio comes alive as well as fans enjoy drink service from a portable bar.
An upscale sports bar fronting Petco Park (Photos by Frank Sabatini Jr.)
And during non-home games, you can cheer on the San Diego Padres (or your preferred team) in the glow of giant flat screens while imbibing from a choice of 25 beer taps and a drink menu boasting abundant tequila, scotch and cocktail options.
The libations, along with a host of upscale bar food, are available year-round. They define the sporty concept of Social Tap, which operates additional locations in the College Area, Ventura and Scottsdale, Arizona.
The chicken & nuts pear salad
With an out-of-town visitor in tow, we dined in a comfy oversized booth on a low-key night and zeroed in on the establishment’s famous filet mignon tacos and “trifecta” chicken wings, which are baked, then grilled, and then fried.
We started with the “chicken & nuts” salad topped with a boatload of chilled breast meat that tasted divine when it began mingling with the balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Sliced pears encircled the plate, and a wellspring of candied walnuts, craisins and bleu cheese crumbles surfaced as we forked along. If there’s a mother of all chicken salads, this is it.
Buffalo-style “trifecta” wings
The wings had everything going for them with their baked-in juices and charred, grilled skins. We couldn’t tell that frying was part of the process since they were devoid of oil except for the small measure of butter that likely went into the Buffalo sauce. Other flavor options include Jamaican jerk, teriyaki and sweet chili.
Tender, minced filet mignon was piled into the tacos (served in pairs) along with an invisible mix of micro-chopped mushrooms, poblano chilies and crispy fried shallots. The contrasting textures and compatible flavors are well conceived — better than many of the innovative and often-glorified tacos put forth by other kitchens.
In the lead up to an entrée we shared — rosemary-thyme chicken served over bacon risotto — we imbibed on beer and cocktails.
Filet mignon tacos
The coconut porter from Maui Brewing I ordered delivered a teasing sweetness from the coconut and a strong, desirable coffee flavor. My companion’s Skinny Press cocktail with Ketel Citron, muddled blueberries, mint and agave nectar was summertime fruity with refreshing citrus notes.
On the down side, the “Mmmm Mojito” made with Captain Morgan she chose as her second drink was largely missing the star ingredient of a mojito. Only a single sprig of mint was in the glass — not enough to perform its magic.
Rosemary-thyme chicken
From the “plates” list, which includes items atypical of casual sports bars such as hand-cut rib eye, wine-braised short ribs and penne pasta with Cajun shrimp, we continued feeding our mood for chicken with an airline cut (the breast and first wing joint) accented with basil cream sauce. But it was the tender rainbow carrots and excellent bacon-kissed risotto served alongside that stole the show.
The pitfall of the dish was the chicken skin. Though delectably crispy, it was “crazy salty,” as my companion described before bringing it to the attention of an apologetic manager. He offered a redo, but we declined after already extracting the tender meat underneath.
Social Tap’s over-the-top dessert, called Holy Sundae, combines a chocolate chip cookie and brownie with Oreos, cinnamon crunch fried ice cream, bourbon caramel and chocolate sauce.
We passed in lieu of the simpler deep-dish chocolate chip cookie crowned with vanilla ice cream made by Moo Time Creamery in Coronado.
It marked a happy ending in a well-designed space where hearty food, bountiful drinks and good vibes prevail, regardless of how the Padres perform each season.

As many Boston restaurants pivot to different takeout and/or delivery options, we thought that it would be important to keep track of them all. You can’t eat at restaurants, but you can still support them by ordering their food. This directory is organized by neighborhood, and outlines the status of each restaurant, what they’re offering (delivery, takeout, etc.), and what platforms they’re on. If the restaurant is marked as closed, please consider visiting their website and purchasing merchandise or gift cards from them.
Right now, this isn’t a directory of every restaurant in every neighborhood, but we want to get as close as possible. We’ll be updating this guide daily - so if you don’t see your neighborhood spot, or if you’ve got a restaurant takeout or delivery tip, let us know at [email protected].

Other than the family-style meals, there are only a few dessert options, but they’re good ones, like the guava and cheese empanadas.
Delfino $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Roslindale $$$$ 754 South Street Not
Rated
Yet
Delfino in Roslindale Square might be our favorite red sauce place in Boston. Our favorite dish on the menu, though, doesn’t contain red sauce at all - it’s the broccoli rabe linguine served with sausage made by an Italian butcher shop down the street. They’re doing takeout Tues-Sun starting at 3:30pm, with family-style meals available along with the regular menu.

Plus, you can order produce and pantry items along with lunch, which is perfect for the current times. All orders can be placed here.

other locations Ciao Pizza & Pasta $ $ $ $ $$$$ 59 Williams St 7.6 /10
If you’re a pizza purist, then Ciao Pizza in Chelsea has classic Neapolitan pizza available for you - though we’re not sure we’d consider their Nutella pizza a “classic.” Order online for pickup orders.

The NYC Sandwich Delivery Guide added to Google Docs
The NYC Sandwich Delivery Guide
The sandwich is a simple concept. Two pieces of bread with just about anything in between. But not since the advent of monogamy has something so straightforward been interpreted in so many different ways. That’s probably because there are tons of different methods of making a sandwich absolutely delicious. You’ll find a bunch of them on this guide.
Featured In The Ultimate NYC Delivery & Takeout Guide See all our guides the spots  Cheeky Sandwiches $$$$ 35 Orchard St
From fried chicken on a buttermilk biscuit to braised short rib on challah, there’s no wrong sandwich to order from this New Orleans-inspired spot on the LES. But to really stir up thoughts of Saints’ chants and cast-iron balconies, order their oyster po’ boy, along with some beignets and Cafe Du Monde chicory coffee. Place your order directly through their website, or by calling 646-504-8132.
Otaku Katsu $$$$ 137 Rivington St
Otaku Katsu - (admittedly copied and adapted from New takeout) Have you or your loved ones tried to deep fry a pork cutlet on your electric stovetop? How did that work out for you? This feels like a good time to announce that Otaku Katsu on the LES is open for takeout and delivery service. You can go to their website to place your order for things like a katsu sandwich with things like chicken, tamago, or bacon and kimchi mayo.
 Noah Devereaux Mekelburg’s $ $ $ $ American ,  Bar Food ,  Sandwiches  in  Brooklyn ,  Williamsburg $$$$ 325 Kent Ave 8.3 /10
If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, Mekelburg’s in either Clinton Hill or Williamsburg is one of the best options in the city. If you’re lukewarm on the idea of a sandwich, the one with meatloaf and red gravy or wagyu roast beef and comté here will set you straight. And if you’re completely against the idea of a sandwich, then you should probably read a different guide, or go to Mekelburg’s anyway, and get the three-cheese mac and cheese or caviar-topped baked potato.
 Ba Xuyen $ $ $ $ Vietnamese  in  Brooklyn ,  Sunset Park $$$$ 4222 8th Ave Not
Rated
Yet
This is our go-to sandwich spot in Sunset Park. They make 11 different kinds of banh mi. If you want to stick with the classics, get the #1. It comes with plenty of crispy vegetables and pork in various forms (ham, paté, pork roll, etc.). For something a bit more exciting, get the #7 (the sardine variety), which will turn your mouth into a saltwater paradise. This is good news considering you can’t really experience a saltwater paradise anywhere else. Call 718-633-6601 to place your order.
 Emily Schindler Katz's Deli $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Deli  in  Lower East Side $$$$ 205 E. Houston St. 8.2 /10
Along with Fiorello LaGuardia and reliving college, the pastrami sandwich from Katz’s is one of the greatest things about the LES. It should be your introduction to this iconic deli, but it shouldn’t be your whole relationship. The corned beef and the reuben are very much worth getting to know as well.
 Teddy Wolff Zooba $ $ $ $ Middle Eastern ,  Egyptian  in  Nolita $$$$ 100 Kenmare St 8.5 /10
Zooba’s takeout and delivery in Nolita will make your hummus and turkey sandwiches seem like uninspired baby food. Check out their website to order one of their excellent pitas that are grilled and stuffed, like the one with spicy taameya or cheesy beef hawawashi.
Peaches Hothouse $ $ $ $ American ,  Southern  in  Bedford-Stuyvesant ,  Brooklyn $$$$ 415 Tompkins Ave. Not
Rated
Yet
It’s not a matter of if you should order the fried chicken sandwich from Peaches Hothouse, it’s only a matter of getting it ‘hot’ or ‘extra hot.’ If you go with extra hot, you’ll probably want to add an iced cocktail to your order as well. Like the original in Fort Greene, the Bed-Stuy location of this Southern spot is open daily, with links to delivery options on their website.
 Steph Rizzolo Razza $ $ $ $ Pizza ,  Italian  in  Jersey City ,  New Jersey $$$$ 275 Grove St 9.0 /10
For the first time ever, Razza is serving a meatball parm sub. If you’ve had this Jersey City pizza spot’s bread, meatballs, and ricotta before, then you know this is a very big deal. If you haven’t, now you can get all three on the same plate. Razza is open for takeout from 3-8pm every day except Monday, but they only announce if they’re offering subs that day on Instagram just before they open.
 Faicco's Italian Specialities $ $ $ $ Sandwiches  in  West Village $$$$ 260 Bleecker St 8.3 /10
If we could only keep one invention from the year 1900, then the world would just have to do without zeppelins. It’d be a small price to pay considering we’d still have Faicco’s in the West Village, and its chicken cutlet sandwich with pesto.
Factory Tamal $$$$ 34 Ludlow St
Both of Factory Tamal’s LES and EV locations serve about twenty five different sandwiches on ciabatta heros, including an excellent torta de quesillo with avocado, Oaxaca cheese, and papalo herbs. But you should also know that no meal from Factory Tamal is complete without a tamale. They’re relatively small and you’ll disappoint yourself (and us) if you don’t try at least one. You can place your pick-up or delivery online here.
Banh Mi Saigon Bakery $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Vietnamese  in  Chinatown ,  Little Italy $$$$ 198 Grand St Not
Rated
Yet
Our favorite thing about the banh mi at Banh Mi Saigon is the spiciness from their mayo and stacks of jalapenos. So make sure to ask for your sandwich to be spicy when you stop by for takeout. If you don’t want to wait for your order, you can call 212-941-1541 ahead of time.
The Edge Harlem $$$$ 101 Edgecombe Ave
The BLT at The Edge Harlem is served with texas toast lathered in garlic mayo. Adding jerk chicken is optional, but as you might expect, strongly encouraged. That delicious sandwich, as well as dishes like coconut fish with parmesan grits, is available for takeout or delivery daily from 11am-9pm (until 4pm on Sundays).
 Noah Devereaux My Cuban Spot $ $ $ $ Latin ,  Cuban  in  Gowanus $$$$ 488 Carroll St 8.1 /10
For a reminder of what normal feels like, you could dress your coat rack up as an attractive date and be disappointed with how boring it is to talk to, or you could order food from My Cuban Spot. It’s always been a to-go-only operation from a takeout window in Gowanus, and it still is. The whole menu is available for takeout or delivery, which means you can eat their pan con bistec with NY strip or perfectly balanced Cubano on your stoop or couch like usual.
 Noah Devereaux Pastrami Queen $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Deli  in  Upper East Side $$$$ 1125 Lexington Ave 7.8 /10
If you find yourself in the East 70s wishing for a perfect deli sandwich, let Pastrami Queen be your north star. These sandwiches come on soft rye with exactly the right amount of lean meat. All you need to do is add mustard. Not feeling pastrami? The roast turkey here is also worth your respect and affection, even though it’s objectively a less sexy option. Either way, get some matzo ball soup and a plate of half-sour pickles in the mix, too.
 Noah Devereaux Andrea Salumeria $ $ $ $ Sandwiches  in  Jersey City ,  New Jersey ,  The Heights $$$$ 247 Central Ave 8.2 /10
The menu at this Italian deli in Jersey City is like a dating app in a small town - you’ll wish it had more options, but you’ll find yourself going back to it again and again. Order any of the five fantastic subs for pickup by calling 201-653-1666.

Shelsky’s is from the same people behind Shelsky’s deli/appetizing store on Court Street, and it’s where you should be ordering a very good bagel or rye sandwiches in the Park Slope area. You can see their full menu and place your pick-up or delivery order here.
Bricks & Hops Beer Garden $$$$ 65 Bruckner Boulevard
Like boogaloo music and David Duchovny, the chopped cheese sandwich was born in New York City. It’s a cross between a burger and a cheesesteak, and it should be part of your order from Bricks & Hops. Order one from this beer garden in Mott Haven any day between 1-10pm.
Sol Sips $$$$ 203 Wilson Ave
If you’re looking for something vegan in the North Brooklyn area, this all-day cafe in Bushwick has sandwiches like a “chicken biscuit” with fried oyster mushrooms, and a panini with tamarind and jackfruit. In addition to offering takeout and delivery at their cafe in Bushwick, Sol Sips is taking donations so that they can give out free meals to the Bushwick community and during protests and Black Lives Matter vigils.  Earl's Beer & Cheese $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Sandwiches  in  East Harlem ,  Upper East Side $$$$ 1259 Park Ave. 8.0 /10
Mastering the grilled cheese sandwich is a sacred art form that takes patience, hand-eye coordination, and a whole lot of butter. And Earl’s on the UES has put in the work to get it right. There are three different kinds of grilled cheese here, but the one you absolutely must order comes with pork belly, kimchi, potato chips, and a fried egg on toasted sourdough. The more traditional one with mozzarella, miso mayo, potato chips, and pickles on an english muffin is incredible as well.

Tasty Deli $ $ $ $ Deli  in  Washington Heights $$$$ 4020 Broadway Not

Tasty Deli has been making great, affordable cold cuts since 1957 and their menu still has over fifty different options. It’s the kind of place where people have a “usual” and the guy behind the counter telepathically understands your needs. But if you’re new and easily overwhelmed, the “Celebrity sandwiches” and “Classics” are both great places to start narrowing down your options.
 Noah Devereaux El Floridita Restaurant $ $ $ $ Latin ,  Cuban  in  Washington Heights $$$$ 4162 Broadway 7.5 /10
Picture a Cubano sandwich, and then try to imagine if everything about it was better. That’ll give you a pretty good idea of the version from Floridita in Washington Heights. It’s available for delivery from 7am-11pm or pickup 24 hours a day.
Cafe Rue Dix $ $ $ $ French ,  West African  in  Brooklyn ,  Crown Heights $$$$ 1451 Bedford Ave Not

Asking for extra Senegalese hot sauce on your chicken sandwich from Cafe Rue Dix will elevate the meal from a straightforward ciabatta sub to something special that you could only find at this Crown Heights spot. No offense to the red peppers, avocado, lettuce, or tomato, which all play important roles as well. If you’re someone who likes to keep it mild, go with one of the burgers instead.
 Pisillo $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Italian  in  Financial District $$$$ 97 Nassau St Not

This Italian deli makes simple stuff with extremely high-quality ingredients like smoked mozzarella and prosciutto. Plus, they’re huge so you can share with your roommate or whoever you need to make a peace offering with because of your actions during quarantine. Urban Vegan Kitchen $$$$ 41 Carmine St
Vegan sandwiches get a bad rap. But Urban Vegan Kitchen is changing all that with options like chickpea tuna and a texas toast BLT with tempeh bacon. So if you’re in the West Village and looking for a solid vegan option to bring with you to the park, this is a great place to know about.
