For context, this is a maple'shades vengeance AU thingy, where Apple'Dusk and Birch'Face were together, not only because I love them but for angst aswell, instead of apple knocking birch off the rocks himself, he ends up being knocked into birch by another warrior, causing the thunderclan warrior to fall into the river, much to Apple'Dusks horror.

She didn't insult the kits, she outright said kits dying no matter what clan they're from is tragic.

Darkstar is not a bad person for not letting in a cat that would cause unnecessary conflict in her own clan, would cause conflict with thunderclan (possibly even war because oakstar is a violent fuck and tensions are probably not great because appledusk killed birchface) and that she assumed is perfectly fine taking care of herself because she could either go to the barn or go to the twoleg place

Not exiling appledusk is misguided judgement. You are not automatically grr evil evil bad bad grr for having misguided judgement, she'd probably also be hesitant to exile or lose any cat in general while tensions with thunderclan are already so bad, even if that cat is fucking awful.

Honestly, i do think living with the ever present guilt of not only getting children killed, but condemning most of your family as well is plenty of punishment for Birchface.

Would he be damned upon the truth coming out, maybe, who knows, but currently he has been punished, even if unknowingly by the stars or whatever metaphor makes sense, with the guilt of knowing all of that was his fault

The agony of never knowing, fear of receiving that punishment, living in a StarClan with the kittens you got killed and none of your family... Birchface lives in a hell of his own making.

If he hadn't spitefully tried to "warn" Ravenwing about the kittens, none of this would have happened. What did he think would happen? This is what he gunned for, and he got it. Now he has to exist with that.
