There are expensive, tiny and cute real leather Blythe shoes and some book binders who make miniature leather-bound books. Skilled leather crafters can skive the thicker leathers to an exquisite thinness. This makes me think that the people (who aren’t veg) yet still don’t consider real leather for bjd accessories 1/4 scale and up either don’t want to deal with the learning curve or won’t address the expense. Leather doll shoes would only have a niche customer base within an already niche hobby with very little size standardization. So tell me, are you willing to pay 2x as much for doll shoes/boots, pants, bags and accessories if they are made from real leather? Because yes, sewing in real leather at small scale really is difficult.

Warrior/Knight outfit in Medieval style, based on period prototypes and designed entirely by me. Reinforced genuine leather is used for the set, the buckles are handmade, the silver pieces are carefully chosen in style. The leather texture is exaggerated with silver paint to create more depth and metal-like look. The boots and clothes are also based on period styles and create a stylistically uniform set. Sets like this are extremely rare to find, as most armors for BJDs are plastic or fake leather. Fits Soom Idealian 72 (doll on the photo), due to a straps&buckles system the armor could fit Iplehouse EID Superhero, Impldoll Idol, DollShe 28M, 5th Motif Venitu and dolls with a measurements similar to Soom Idealian. The shirt and the pants are on a loose side so they should fit too. Online resources for making BJD clothes and shoes

(Updated 25 June 2020 with my/ Small Wonder romper pattern) 

I've been wanting to collate a list of quality resources available free online - primarily sewing patterns, but also tutorials and tips.  These are generally ones I’ve found to be pertinent, accurate and useful in crafting for my own dolls.

Jareth The Goblin King: Dark Armor Tutorial for 70+ BJD

FINAL LOOK

This Jareth the Goblin King’s dark armor has been created in 1:3 scale for a 70cm BJD. I hope the tutorial below is helpful to those who wish to recreate the outfit for their doll or themselves.

PREFACE

When approaching Jareth's costume design, it's essential to understand that he is a monster. He steals human infants. He probably eats them too, which should explain all the human bones present in his garment. Also, goblin craftsmanship is not the most elegant, there always will be a degree of crudeness to his look. That said, Jareth is a fey of royal standing, so he will have luxurious elements to his outfit, with especial attention to armor.

REFERENCE

Since in the movie Jareth changes clothes more often than a Bollywood star, I started by choosing the outfit. I'll admit, I hoped to cheat by using the action figure as a reference, expecting it to be an authentic replica. I was wrong. The figurine, although very well made, has some principal inaccuracies in the design of the chest piece and the cape. Since Jareth's cuirass is the centerpiece of the outfit, I believe it's very important not to follow the initially incorrect design of the action figure, like many cosplayers do, but rather refer to the film itself.

The problem is, the scene of Jareth appearing to Sarah in his regal armor is very dark, so the costume is hardly visible even in the HD version of the film. The only other scene displaying this outfit is the "You have 13 Hours..." dialogue before Sarah enters the Labyrinth. The lighting is much better there, but, again, there is no clear full body shot. I was lucky to find some promotional photographs from the press kit which features both characters in focus, with enough details to use for reference.

After examining the reference images, it becomes clear that the diamond-shaped cuirass is worn on top of the leather doublet, the bottom of the doublet showing from underneath the armor. I outlined the armor and mirrored the image to create a template, which I used to figure out the proper size for the doll. 

CUIRASS

The cuirass was sculpted out of pewter Sculpey, but any polymer clay will do, because it has to be painted black for the final look anyway. I painted it with acrylics, adding some blue and purple shimmer to the edges for definition. I specifically tried to achieve an organic look and feel to the armor, as if the goblins crafted it out of some monstrous insect shell.

This chest piece is sized to fit a Dollshe DSAM, but it fits a Hound as well.

CLOAK

In the film, the cape consists of two pieces of fabric: the inner shimmery blue material and the outer dark ripped material. For the inner part, I used a royal blue lamé, which I crinkled by hand to add texture. For the outer part, I wanted a fabric with an organic, uneven texture, but I couldn't find exactly the right kind, so I had to resort to making one myself. I found a triple-layered Italian silk chiffon in warm off-black, where top and bottom layers are hammered, and the middle layer is plain, and carefully cut holes in the top layer, fraying the edges of the holes. Then I applied streaks of metallic cobalt paint, which added color and dimension to already complex texture of the cape.

The shoulder piece and the collar are made of black and dark-brown leather of different textures. To keep the shape of the collar, I inserted a piece of steel wire into a woven ribbon, and glued it to the back of the collar with Aileen's fabric glue. Same ribbons decorate the front of the collar.

The bones were sculpted out of Sculpey, and gently aged with acrylic paint. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions when baking your polymer clay!

DOUBLET

The doublet is sewn out of glove-quality leather (a recycled skirt), bottom edge folded and trimmed using Aileen's fabric glue for structure. The closure is a self-adhesive black Velcro strip. Cuff trim is painted with metallic acrylic.

The leggings are store-bought, any tight leather-like black pants will do.

The boots are regular store-bought riding boots with some leather trim I added to replicate the style of Jareth's boots. With a slight modification, any black boots will do. His are much more elegant, but I'm fine with these boots because they add stability to a doll when standing on his own (also, I was too lazy to make boots from scratch ;) ).

Anxiety is one of your favorite pairs of pajamas gets messed up prematurely, meaning not a life of normal wear and tear, and freaking out because of it wondering how you can save them even though you know you can’t, struggling with yourself to rationalize you’ll make cute doll clothes from the pants and the shirt can be worn outside, it continuing to bother you no matter what, and only finding peace in the middle of the night when you finally find a replacement pair online. 

Mini Dollzone and her 1/6 daughter. These were pajama pants that wore themselves out. I have a blue version that’s also warn out and I’ll make another set of outfits. The dad in this family, also a mini Dollzone, fits the same clothes as mom. Did just realize the top has darts but he doesn’t care. He’s just miffed I haven’t found a pastel version of his wig yet. But he’s so old he’s turning beauty green so it’s difficult.

If you want a boy and girl BJD who can share stuff get Dollzone minis. 

Obitsu 60 unnamed eyehole head in a track suit made form a pair of pants. 

So turning my cute old clothes in to doll clothes, and making printed shirts in to quilts, isn’t an issue.

It’s when so many other things are yanking your chain and a pair of messed up pajama pants just snaps it. Adorbs pajama pants with wiener dogs wearing coats and hats on them pajamas. 

And the cat is allowed bak in my room to lay on my bed but I’m keeping her out of the bathroom. Basically if I can’t see her, under the bed and the closet are blocked off, I’ll be suspicious. She’s on;y peed on the floor and the bathroom rug so thankfully it’s not paper or books. 

Don’t know what my neck and arm think they’re doing so I don’t know what I’ll be doing on that end.

On the drawing end and being able to trace things in to sketch books should I feel the need to it looks like cheaper is better. This thing is sold under all sorts of combinations of ‘magic mirror tracer sketch art wizard trace n draw’ could be in a different color, could be a marketing tie in. 

Unless you’re in the Alex art supplies market, and you know if you are, pass up their version for a free standing piece of plastic with feet. This didn’t bother my brain one bit. The feet come off and can be used on bigger plastic. It’ll work with a book. Just remember this method does a horizontal flip on everything it sees. So I’ll be able to use my stencils, I just need to put them down backwards. 

I’m going to experiment with loading up pics in the tablet that have been flipped horizontally and possibly filtered a bit to make some things stand out. As it goes most of my stencils are for 5x8 books. 

The way my brain injury is going I might have to rely on initial tracing more than I would like as there are some pics I just for the life of me can’t get right. There are two books I want to really use this for, the softcover Strathmore mixed media for the water soluble graphite pics of people in leather and which ever of the books becomes a mixed media brag book.

Did open the Jane Davenport, it’s not smooth like hot press watercolor paper but has a bit of a fabric like texture. Still looks like nice paper. Haven’t done anything in it yet because I haven’t felt like doing the nice art I want to put in it yet. 

But I will!
