BLOODBORNE LORE Q+A PART 2: CAINHURST STATUES
part 1
---
THE HUNTER ASKS:
Tumblr media
all the statues in yharnam are weird. even the ones that look normal are so fucking weird. nearly every statue in this game hints at something much larger and stupider than we ever could have imagined.
before we start, for clarity's sake, the chalice dungeons are comprised of four major areas: pthumeru (the largest area and the aforementioned "tomb of the gods", it is a city that rose and fell eons before yharnam), the hintertomb (previously explained), ailing loran (a long ruined city whose fate echoes the fate of yharnam), and great isz (a dungeon that is overlapping with "the cosmos" and is of great story importance). they are NOT main game content. some people completely skip them because they appear to be repetitive and are honestly kind of boring. and yet....
this ties into castle cainhurst's "normal" statues. the first clue something is off is that all the knight statues are missing the right leg. all of them. and not in an uneven way that would imply they were knocked off by some art hating maniac.
Tumblr media
it wasn't until the DLC came out that this became retroactively significant. the item description for the old hunter's trousers reads:
A widespread belief of the period was that "beast blood crept up the right leg," and this led to the double-wrapped belt.
the dlc takes place in the time of the old hunters, the distant past. but the knights predate the hunters, right? they have to. the rifle spear was said to be based on a "lost cainhurst weapon". its a pale and poor imitation of the reiterpallasch. and the statues...
the statues in cainhurst clog up rooms to much that they make moving around difficult. they're all the same 4 statues: a queen, a king, a different queen holding a child holding an orb (?), and a tasteful contrapposto nude. i cannot stress how many of these fucking things are just lying around or shattered around the castle. the depictions of the generic king and queen (in truth, these are recreations of statues around notre dame) match depictions in other parts of the game but absolutely no mention is made of their rule now or in the past.
how old is the cainhurst lineage?
old. really, really, old.
here's the only other place you can find the statues: as gold statuettes in the treasure rooms of the pthumeru dungeons
Tumblr media
ah, and i know what you're thinking: obviously this is just fromsoft re-using assets in that classic sloppy late game kind of way. but there's. more. a lot more. its not just this.
its so old that the armor you see in the throne rooms and a portrait of a knight in cainhurst castle can be found scattered throughout the lowest parts of the labyrinth.
Tumblr media
in modern cainhurst, the fellow above has been transformed through dastardly means into the gargoyle-esque enemy called the "child of antiquity". "bastard of cainhurst" probably would have been a better and more thematically appropriate name.
Tumblr media
he is not the only cainhurstian (?) depicted on the this wall of what you probably thought was reused concept art. its probably that. but its something else too. you know who else is in these paintings and also in the chalice dungeons?
Tumblr media
her.
Tumblr media
in the sinister chalice descriptions ("sinister" being a modifier that adds her to the dungeon for extra challenge) she is described as a "mad pthumerian". h-how can she be a pthumerian if she's a cainhurst noble?!
have you noticed that bloodlickers will appear in chalice dungeon rooms where you've preformed a visceral attack? the only other place they're found in the game is cainhurst! they're read to be blood drunk nobles who have become vampiric like mosquitos or ticks. why are they in the dungeons??
there's also this cainhurst knight who continues to live and serve his queen. i believe one of his guaranteed encounters is at the very bottom floors of the labyrinth. how did he get down there??
did he get down there?
or...did they come up? the subjects of the portraits are pale and thin.
"The old nobles, long-time imbibers of blood, are no strangers to the sanguine plague[...]"
how old? how long have they been imbibing blood? they've experienced blood plague before?!
why do both the bloody crow of cainhurst (one of annalise's knights who is evidently not a vileblood) and the shadows of yharnam (the entourage of queen yharnam) drop "blood rapture" runes which are deliberately vague about which queen the rune is in service to?
how old is the cainhurst lineage?! WHAT is the cainhurst lineage?! annalise, queen of the vilebloods, is the sole survivor of a massacre that wiped out the rest of the vilebloods (an ideologically charged name imposed on them by the church). she was left alive simply because she could not be killed but she was forced into a mask she cannot remove. but the mask does not prevent her from making us into a vileblood, as we only have to drink her blood to do so.
what could the mask be hiding? why does her dialog change when you unlock the lowest chambers of the labyrinth? how are there two undead queens?! (yucky item from bloodborne warning)
all hail the undying queen of blood!

Since when does beast blood crept up the right leg?
It came to my attention that some people missed a detail that was already in the base game concerning the thing about how the best blood "crept up the right leg". Apparently injecting blood in the right leg (and having consequences from it) is something that could have happen way before the healing church and the old hunters.
Like you might be aware (if you played the dlc) many old hunters have belt on their trouser & right leg (Like Henryk, Djura & the old hunters) :
Tumblr media
Old hunter trousers that protected countless hunters from the beasts in an older age. A widespread belief of the period was that "beast blood crept up the right leg", and this led to the double-wrapped belt.
+ Gehrman is missing's the end of his right leg. (well we have 0 idea how he loose it to so... mystery not sure it's link but it probably didn't help in the collective imagery).
It seems to indicate that smt is going on with it right ? Could be just a belief but I think there's a bit a truth in this.
Here's an image of an half transformed Yharnamite in Yhahar'gul. Like the cleric beast & huntsmen it's their left arm who are bigger / seems to transformed first.
Tumblr media
Why ? Well blood transfusion. It's where they got their blood transfusion.
Then what about the hunters legs ? Where could this rumors about the right leg come from ? Well were do we (the hunter) pass our time injecting blood vials to heal ? Bingo. The right leg. In that case, it made sense that some of the hunters who turned into beast would begin their transformation in this part.
Now there's another interesting details concerning the right leg thing. And depending on the timeline it's really interesting and confusing. It seems that the old Cainhurst knight were missing their right leg too. Perhaps for a similar reason? So that "legend" could be even older!
Take a look at the staircase that led to the Queen's chamber just after passing Logarius and before the room with Annalise.
Tumblr media
Ok you see the statues? All the knights armors are missing their right leg below the knee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what does this status depicted? Well personally I don't think they're the Vilebloods we know when the beast plague strike Yharnam and when they were enemies of the church. but old cainhurst knight. Maybe a few centuries ago.
The following armor, really similar to one illustrated in one painting we can found in the chalice dungeons. It does look more akin to those missing a leg don't you think?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah yes Cainhurst went to war with Pthumeru and their pthumerians cousins it seems. But it's another story. (+ they got their ass kicked and that's perhaps why Gehrman just thought that using lighter clothes could be more efficient. old armors are bad.)
Also...Here's a cut content enemy that has supposed to be found in the chalice dungeons. The "Nameless Cainhurst knight"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is missing his right leg too....
So...why are they missing a leg ? Using old blood before everyone? Hm who knows...
and yes I know moon presence basically take our left leg but a bigger part too
(I just wanted to show off the the knight armor on their horse! many people miss it apparently an I was advice to share it!)

I headcanon that Mensis Scholar Damien was actually Runesmith Caryll’s little brother, and that he used to be a member of the Choir. (Hence his use of the Choir Bell)
Tumblr media
However after witnessing the slow decline of Caryll’s health due to experimental surgeries performed by the Choir to magnify her natural connection to the Great Ones, Damian defected.
Unable to reconcile his own feelings with the group that exploited his sister to death.

She needs more love
HHHHH YESSS
Tumblr media
I am not normal about her or this look at ALL, like where is all the stunning art of her in this gown with the red hair pleaseeee <3
I try to draw her like this as much as possible. My Annalise propaganda needs to expand though! I have spent hours thinking about her and crafting her story in my mind…I guess I should write it out a bit more…
My girl…she does need more love🩸

Miss Eileen for the blorbo <333
Tumblr media
Aw almost bingo :(
Fun fact Eileen was the character design that got me interested in Bloodborne as a game as I'd like to play, not just reading up on the lore. As a kid I was hyperfixated on the Black Death/Plague to the point that I knew the "key players" (first person accounts) like they were blorbos in my favorite movie or somethings. Eileen being an older woman in a Plague Doctor costume was catering to me and me specifically that it's a personal attack. I want her gender.
She is innocent of her crimes. In fact she did not commit any (including attacking me) cause they were necessary (frankly the "Good" Hunter is rather unhinged). I wish canon didn't happen that she goes mad or her ending being ambiguous. I hope she gets a good retirement at least in one ending. And also therapy.
She's one of the few decent characters ngl I wish her sidequest was longer and I didn't mess it up so easily.

I focused on Rom and Caryll specifically for this one, as they have the biggest potential for the Micolash-level roles in the Choir! I have a post that collects the points about how it is possible that Healing Church maybe was not instantly isolated from Byrgenwerth ( x ), and under this idea Willem somewhat works too, albeit a bit more like 'eminence grise' than a present 'leader'. In short, Byrgenwerth was responsible for Fishing Hamlet massacre that became a fundament of the Church to seek eyes, Byrgenwerth is quite aware of Laurence's endeavours down to association with the Moon Presence, Willem coincidentally looks like a pope himself and Laurence is a vicar who are the guys that replace the MAIN guy, the Eye rune which is a voice of Ebrietas also served as a symbol of his pursuit for the eyes, Forbidden Woods have secret cave through which people like Fauxsefka could still access Byrgenwerth, Choir which formed from Research Hall honors Willem with their blindfolds and there are evidences of some Choir people (like Rom or Yurie the Last Scholar) "coming back" in Byrgenwerth!
Tumblr media
Altar of Grief is very likely Rom herself despite legs not matching, as Rom in the Lake and Dungeons coincidentally has holes at the level where big legs on the altar form are! Besides, Ebrietas' lyrics seem to refer to Mensis Ritual as she is weeping for her:
Tumblr media
( x )
We just don't know whether Insight given her to Kos was too much and she could not linger in human plane any longer, or she willingly abandoned it seeing (the future?) what would come from School of Mensis and hid the ritual in advance... But at the same time, especially since nothing in lore says she was one of the scholars, even, she could still just be a more "successful" patient they took from Research Hall, or even one of the children that took the "wrong" path into the Sea instead of peering into Stars (Adeline approves fjhdfhfds). Or maybe one of the members that turned special, or a secret agent from Willem, or even from Micolash since concealing the ritual helps not just the humans below but himself too, or or or-
Tumblr media
With Caryll, it is a bit simpler: whereas Willem had a hunch of her, Ebrietas in person was finally found after Research Hall ran its course and the doctors figured, probably by patients like Living Failures, to seek for the Stars and not the Sea. This was how the Choir was formed around her, but who is a better person to be head of the Choir than THE one famous for being able to understand language of the Great Ones? Caryll could easily bridge the gap! And no matter the timeline convolutions, could've simply left Byrgenwerth with Laurence from the start but actually remembering to fear the blood all along!
But... Yeah, in the end, ever since @jarognieva pointed it out that we can't even be sure about Micolash's role in Mensis it's been a super interesting idea. That maybe School of Mensis itself functioned more on its own and Micolash was "chosen" as the most mad madman x) So, why could not Choir function in a similar way too? So Laurence would babysit BOTH of the factions full time, OR leave them to manage themselves at most only checking in for progress reports (would well explain the huge rift between his blood-drunk ass and both subordinate factions being focused on Eyes instead, too).

Unique Statues in Bloodborne
Hooded Lady, presumed to be Caryll (Found in the Hunter’s Dream, the Abandoned Old Workshop, and the Chalice Dungeons)
Tumblr media
Bearded Figure (Found in the Tomb of Oedon, Oedon Chapel, and around Cathedral Ward)
Tumblr media
Angel of the Grand Cathedral (Found in the Grand Cathedral, in the nightmare too, and before Hemwick Charnel Lane)
Tumblr media
Three Women next to a body (Found in the Church of the Good Chalice and Witches’ Abode)
Tumblr media
King and Queen of Castle Cainhurst, most likely some of its first rulers (Found carved on the door of Castle Cainhurst and all around the castle itself. A small golden statue of the Queen is also found near altars in the Chalice Dungeons)
Tumblr media
Shrouded Figure (Found exclusively in the Chalice Dungeons)
Tumblr media
Other notable statues. Executioner, most-likely Logarius, a strange witch-like figure at the entrance of Hemwick Charnel Lane, two other statues in Castle Cainhurst, one of the only humanoid figures in Yahar’gul Hidden Village.

another thing i found strange! cainhurst folk did not inherit the motifs of pthumeru's statues-- the ladder having had statues of completely covered up figures, sometimes only showing their hands and not even a hint of a face at all
meanwhile cainhurst has noticeably uncovered, naked figures (usually women, as cainhurst has a matriarchy) and when theyre not uncovered, the faces are not hidden and the figures have proud, open postures.
and yharnam...resembles the pthumerian statues a lot more? makes sense, i guess- the town being named after THE yharnam, pthumerian queen.
except...hell, how was this place founded? by whom? pthumerians clearly settled into what would later be cainhurst, as they are their descendants. yharnamites, however, arent.
alfred has dialgoue which suggest only HUNTERS know of the chalice dungeons, he, as well as gehrman, refer to them as the "tombs of the old gods"... so- hear me out - was yharnam actually the place where pthumerians lived, and the dungeons were simply, well, tombs. the dungeons do not seem to be very liveable places i wouldnt think, the place has many guards as well as some bosses by the name of "watchers", "keeper of the old lords", "watchdog of the old lords". of course, we DO find pthumerians (in the form of both regular enemies and bosses) but they usually look decrepit as fuck. there's also the bell ladies, whom i assume were pthumerians themselves (and the kidnappers! both would affiliate with the school of mensis as we do find them in yahargul/working for it) and their primary task is summoning to keep us out and you know..kill us <3
it is a very guarded place, not chill at all, has levers and many doors and no structures that would resemble houses in a traditional sense
plus we find church servants and giants in cathedral ward, who look very pthumerian indeed (messengers kind of do as well but who knows also their lore is like one sentence) so...what do you all think? was yharnam once the propee home to pthumerians? and the reason most of them reside in the dungeons is due to communing with the gods, as they too were blood-crazed like all of the other nations/countries we hear of... except wherever yamamura and the hunters of hunters came from
