Transformers: Mosaic #380 - "Leader Of The Club"
Originally posted on May 13th, 2006
Story - Alain Desrochers Art, Letters - Dane Eichinger
deviantART | Seibertron | TFW2005 | BotTalk
wada sez: This strip is inspired by the Disney Label version of Optimus Prime, “Mickey Mouse Trailer”. The strip’s title is quoted from the theme song to The Mickey Mouse Club. On deviantART, Desrochers offered a list of the “magicians and sorcerers” Mickey is acquainted with: “There's Jafar from Aladdin, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Fairy Godmother from Cinderella, Merlin from Sword in the Stone, Master Yensid from Fantasia, Genie from Aladdin although he's neither a magician or a sorcerer.” See below for Desrochers’ original script and commentary.
First Panel: Blackness, nothing.
Prime: Where am I, what happened?
Second Panel: Haze is lifting, ill defined shapes are barely identifiable as the clouds, a tree and what might be the side of a building.
Unseen Commentator: Gosh, you had a bad fall, but don’t worry you’re safe now.
Third Panel: Shapes are fuzzy, but clearer. The sky is a vibrant blue, the clouds seem to glow, the tree sways gently as if in a breeze and the side of the building turns out to be a barn door.
Prime: I feel strange, something’s different.
Unseen Person: Gee I’m sorry, when I touched that crystal thing something happened to change you. I don’t know why.
Fourth Panel: POV Prime as he sits up, before him is a creature never before encountered, an anthropomorphic mouse with perfect round ears, white gloves, yellow shoes and a pair of red shorts.
Prime: Who are you?
Mouse: I’m Mickey Mouse.
Fifth Panel: Prime climbs to his feet and shakes his head.
Prime: I’ve never heard of a Mickey Mouse. The Matrix changed me because you touched me you say, but why? *Mickey shrugs at the question*
Sixth Panel: POV Prime looking at his reflection in a pool of water, he should appear cartoony similar to Animated Prime, but more in keeping with traditional Disney animation looks.
Prime: By the Matrix.
Seventh Panel: Full body shot of Mousemus Prime looking both shocked and comically petrified.
Prime: Megatron could never take me seriously like this.
Eighth Panel: Close-Up of Mickey looking suitably ashamed and disappointed at having caused Prime trouble.
Mickey: Oh I’m sorry if I caused you any trouble. Maybe I can get some help to change you back to the way you used to be, I know a lot of magicians and sorcerers. Even a Genie.
Last Panel: Mousemus Prime’s upper torso with a Disney bluebird flitting past his left ear, he shakes his head at Mickey’s concern.
Prime: *Sigh* It is not your fault Mickey Mouse, the Matrix does strange things. I shall have to learn to live with it I suppose. Or perhaps, sorcerers you say?
This might need a little work, let me know if I should rework the last couple of scenes. It might not jive well enough.
End ?
Here is the original script for my Transformers Mosaic piece, I have left it completely intact and chose not to edit it to reflect the changes made in the final draft.
As you can see there was some more dialogue between Mickey and Prime and no really dynamic ending for the piece. Blueike the artist really fixed it up for the second draft by limiting the dialogue and adding that final dynamic scene it helps the story a lot more than what I originally had as an ending.
Most of my other unclaimed scripts have good endings I think, but this one I will admit to having a difficult time limiting myself to actually end the piece on one page. Not only is it a blending of my two favorite hobbies, but it also wasn't easy letting go, my muse wanted to keep writing I think. But I had to limit myself.
Fortunately my collaborative comrade helped get a much better message across for an actual ending. Thanks Blueike :D

So how's it going lately? I don't think I've spoken to you in a while. I'm BlueIke from dA, btw.
Pretty good thanks. :) I love your TF5 pics since they’re very creative takes on some of the characters for TLK and ones from the past movies.

Alright let’s not beat around the bush: the Pecharunt event was hacked into activation, people are playing it. Bulbapedia knows it, Serebii knows it, Game Freak knows it, you know it, let’s just get on with it.
Anyone expecting a more involved story with how the peach guy ties into Okidogi’s group will be bummed because it doesn’t do that. It’s basically an Ultra Beast plot straight out of the SuMo anime: an unknown Pokémon screws around by feeding people Mocchi which makes them do the chicken dance, and Ash and co have to shove it in a Beast Ball to get it to stop. (Funny enough the play through I watched used a Beast Ball). In context, Pecharunt doesn’t appear to be doing anything malevolent, making its connection to Okidogi’s crimes a bit questionable. I guess what I take away is it fed them thinking it was helping the trio, but the dim witted trio snapped and went to commit crimes, leaving Pecharunt to go “Oh SNAP! O:”
I imagine the intent was to have a goofy side story to lighten the mood after the Indigo Disk, but I dunno, it still doesn’t feel right, especially for what is, as of typing, the final entry in Scarlet and Violet’s game story.
Since it feels like a plot for Ash, I leaned hard into it on my end. After getting Shiny Terapagos, Team Rocket bonds with it and decides to go get some Mocchi to celebrate… Unfortunately they become possessed by Pecharunt, who reawakened around the same time as Okidogi’s group did. Unlike the games, this version is more openly malicious, and it seeks to take over Kitakami. Apparently in ancient times, Pecharunt was the one responsible for creating the war between the Four Treasures and the Loyal Three, pitting both against each other to see who would be best for its benefit. (As it happened, Lucius’ Six Heroes were also involved towards the end, and helped seal away Pecharunt and the Treasures in the temples Team Ash, Team Explorer and Team Rocket found the later in on Paldea.) In the modern day, when the Treasures were defeated once more, it proved to be Ash, Iono, Alfie, Team Rocket and the Loyal Three. Team Rocket succeeding in capturing Terapagos, the entity responsible for Terastalization, wound up being a huge bonus to Pecharunt.
Kieran, who didn’t drink the Kool-Aid, tries to warn Ash and the others, but Ash, Pikachu, and Iono get infected also, leaving Alfie, Kieran, Fezandipiti and Briar unaffected, and the only ones left who can stop Pecharunt’s army.
Can Alfie and the others stand up to the World Champion and Pecharunt’s onslaught?
Rather than the chicken dance, I thought it’d be funnier if Ash’s group instead referenced the dances from Overman King Gainer and Lucky Star.

On the topic of EarthSpark factions, let’s also consider the Autobots.
Hasbro, understandably, wants to mostly use characters who sell so Optimus, Arcee, Bumblebee & Grimlock tend to be the Autobots primarily used the most in things. Lately Wheeljack and Elita-1 have become more common fixtures, and while it’s preferable to have Elita get a chance in the spotlight again over the somewhat forced Windblade and Pyra Magna back in the IDW days, it’s still a big symptom of modern storytelling. The insistence to use the same five or so Autobots over and over again is proving to be stale. It wasn’t THAT long ago we had a more varied cast but there’s only so much you can do with the same five guys and gals over and over again without completely rewriting them (Arcee being a particular stand out due to Prime and IDW).
Like the Decepticons, it feels like the Autobot cast in EarthSpark is miscast.
For instance, if GHOST is meant to be part of human relations anyway, shouldn’t some of the Autobots be public service vehicles? This show is Rescue Bots for Teens, own up to it, man!
Like where’s Inferno & Red Alert?
Tumblr media
While never really depicted as a gay couple before, if you want an organic relationship, these two are it. It wouldn’t take much to pivot these two into being husbands. Plus, Red Alert’s paranoia could easily (and rightfully in some cases) played off against Megatron and other GHOST aligned Decepticons.
Human/TF romance is also something that could be played up with Powerglide and Sea Spray.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Powerglide for the aerial recon and support (it’s not like they do anything with Wheeljack’s drones in show anyway) with Astoria being his semi eccentric co-pilot and one of the rich sponsors that helps fund GHOST.
Alanna and Sea Spray I had it were part of GHOST, who research aquatic areas of interest related to the Decepticons.
Tow-Line! A personal fav of the RiD01 Autobots. Still following his No Parking! mantra, he’s mostly comic relief towing away Decepticons, Terrans and fellow GHOST operatives who park irregularly.
Tumblr media
Quickshadow! Pretty much a straight transplant of her Rescue Bots self, and the straight woman to a lot of the antics of the Terrans and her teammates. Notably she’s the only Rescue Bots Autobot to make the leap to the big kids table in this scenario.
Tumblr media
Smokescreen! I see him as a hybrid of his Prime and G1 self. Young and impulsive, but having a bit of a smoking problem which is useful for confusing Decepticons. Hes largely kept in check by Quickshadow and his human partner Jack Darby.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Strongarm! Transplant of her RiD15 self, slightly less rigid but no less by the books. She’s in on the Terrans, and drops by the Maltos to teach them what she knows of what it means to be an upstanding Robot in Disguise. The bit with her and the Terrans is a toned down version of IDW Tailgate being taught by the fastidious IDW Ultra Magnus about the Autobot code.
Tumblr media
(Frankly I’m terrified Prowl’s upcoming role as of typing will make him an ACAB type due to IDW and current events, so Strongarm is my choice of having a competent cop that’s doing what’s she’s supposed to be doing.)
And to round us out: Grapple. The artsy fartsy type of the GHOST Autobots who leads reconstruction efforts with a squad of other construction themed Transformers like Bulkhead, Quickmix & the Constructicons. Very detail oriented and a perfectionist, buildings MUST be up to his standards to the letter. Grapple, Jawbreaker & Thrash tend to be played off in work/play scenarios where they learn from each other.
Tumblr media
I do understand that the Terrans are meant o be the standouts and the Decepticons, due to favoritism, are getting the oddballs, but it bothers me that the GHOST aligned Autobots especially feels like an afterthought (because in a fashion they kinda were…).

So let’s try to guess TFONE’s story for kicks.
The movie opens with how we expect Optimus & Megatron to be, but jump cuts to then stuck in the cramped room when they were in their “twenties” as Orion & D-16.
We get the worker bot bit with them, B-127 and Elita, until they get the bright idea to go to the surface of Cybertron. They’re on the run from the Vehicons mostly because they bounced from their positions and that’s a no-no.
The group stumble upon Alpha Trion and get their own T-Cogs, and then stumble on the Quintessons talking to Sentinel Prime. The whole thing is orchestrated by Starscream, forcing the Quints to come and “take care” of their benefactor, so Starscream’s group can shake things up on Cybertron and do things HIS (and to a lesser extent The Waves’) way.
Cybertron is well off but has its hierarchy due to the ruling Prime cooperating with the Quintessons. When Sentinel can no longer comply, they kill him and set forth what is functionally the start of the Great War, using the Vehicons, warrior Quints & other troopers related to the government to start a take over of Cybertron.
Orion and D-16 have differing opinions on how to deal with the Quintessons and their ties to their planet’s government, with a frustrated and betrayed D-16 storming off and being absorbed into Starscream’s group. Orion obtains the Matrix meanwhile and becomes Optimus, with him, Bee and Elita becoming the first Autobots.
Things come to a head where Megatron beats the slag out of Starscream, takes over what is now the Decepticons, and kills an important figure (Alpha Trion maybe?) to prove how far he’s willing to go to defeat the Quintessons and set Cybertron under a better order, HIS order, an order Orion couldn’t grasp and Starscream would just screw up.
Optimus and Megatron’s factions do defeat the Quintessons, but now Cybertron is at a cross roads with the Quintessons & Sentinel gone, and Megatron looking to settle scores, and a somewhat reluctant Optimus ready to stop Megatron when things will eventually get hairy for TFTWO.

Y’know the more I think about it, if EarthSpark has such an infatuation with the Decepticons, why aren’t they using Decepticons better suited to the story it’s trying to tell.
To me the Decepticons’ role really should’ve been a mix of IDW and RiD15. Most are left rudderless, cranky and confused, still willing to continue the cause and hurt people in an attempt to conquer. Some meanwhile are willing to work with humans in some capacity, good or bad.
Like where’s Sky-Byte, Knock Out, Clobber and Drift?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Never mind Drift’s Husbando thing with Ratchet, shouldn’t Megatron, as a GHOST operative, have his own little group of turn coat Decepticons who willingly followed him to the Autobots (and that it’s specifically ones who willingly became Autobots in past series helps this make sense). I get the intended idea was to make Megatron something of a fish out of water among the Autobots, but technically speaking, shouldn’t a few reasonable Decepticons have tagged along with him?
For that matter, where’s guys like Lugnut and Demolisher having an existential crisis over their leader abandoning them?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s gotta be fertile ground for shenanigans and character work with Megatron and the Terrans. I know they kinda toyed with it with the ‘Waves, but boy did they not commit to the bit.
I can also buy that there’s a few Decepticons that are trying to make due on Earth and even work jobs with humans, we’ve seen that before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to mention Decepticons working with the human criminal element (or at least morally dubious types).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course there’s my personal favorite, the Decepticons doing whatever it takes to get off Earth.
Tumblr media
Like really, the RiD15 Decepticons were able to build/repair ships using comparable human hardware, what in the ever loving skrud was preventing the ES Decepticons from doing the same. And don’t say GHOST, they’re too stupid to be a problem on their own without the Autobots. Maybe the Arachnamechs, but even so what’s stopping an opportunistic Decepticon from capturing and reprogramming them for their own ends?
The writers have such a fixation on the Decepticons, why NOT have this more nuanced take on them that ISN’T just purely making them into giant teddy bears. Fun aside, but they actually had those via Brickbear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey ES writers, I know some of you are reading this, on the off chance you guys continue to write for TF in the future, I triple dog dare you to make a Brickbear Decepticon canon in-show. I don’t care what you have to t’do, you want teddy bear Decepticons? Make this work. The blue print is right here. Basically make him or her the Peter Puppy (Earthworm Jim) of the Decepticons: cutesy in beast mode, a monstrous Hibernation Sandy Cheeks in robot mode. You’re welcome.
The point remains that modern writers NEED to stop sympathizing with the Decepticons and stop writing them as misunderstood Millennials and Zoomers who need a hug. I’M a bi-slagging-sexual Millennial from the 90’s and I’m among those telling you to knock it off, most of us want fun villains who revel in being murderous gearshafts, stealing Energon from refineries and drop kicking cassettes cats. Not everyone needs to reform like it’s Dragonball or Steven Universe, and I say that liking Vegeta and Beerus.

So the EarthSpark kids books came out and the one that stuck out to me was this one.
Tumblr media
The cover suggests a story about Bumblebee having to break his cover at a race (again), with Prime and Megs being forced to intervene due to GHOST.
With me, being old school, and remembering a similar G1 story book about racing, I was expecting the climax to basically be this:
Tumblr media
Obviously with different characters, but no…
The crux of it has GHOST still wanting to apprehend Bumblebee and they go to a race track thinking he’ll be there because he can’t resist a race. He does wind up coming there, but only because the Terrans and the kids twist his arm into sneaking out and watching a race. GHOST gets suspicious, but Dot, who was with GHOST on patrol, manages to diffuse the situation before anything can happen and the story just… ends.
They get to watch the race sure, but it feels like they stopped half way. I feel like a much better story would be GHOST is trying to find Bumblebee at the race track, but they’re so hellbent trying to find the little yellow guy, they over look the actual problem at hand: Swindle and the Stunticons Slashmark, Wildbreak and Heatseeker. Swindle is working with the Stunticons to fix the race for his own financial gain while the Stunticons get to wreck some havoc.
It’s then up to Bee and his pit crew in the Terrans, Robbie and Mo to put a stop to Swindle’s scheme, and work around/deflect GHOST.
The main change though is Optimus and Megatron can’t be here, since they’d piece together what’s going on immediately, instead leaving it to Schloder to bumble his way like Inspector Gadget through the story while Bee and the Maltos get the job done like Penny and Brain lol.

Transformers fans have been going over a new quarterly report and there’s good news and bad news. The former is Transformers is Hasbro’s strongest performing brand, the later is RotB and EarthSpark’s toy sales are stinkers. In particular, EarthSpark’s considered an underperforming product, with the show’s ratings in the smelting pool. As some of us anticipated, the second season is the most we’re gonna get, no third season or beyond.
So as much as some don’t want to hear it: EarthSpark is essentially a flop, and the second season coming at all is more because it’s too late to axe it.
What’s carrying the toys so far are the collector lines: Legacy and Studio Series. For better or for worse, do NOT doubt the power of nostalgia. Also pricing. A friend was telling me a parent audibly freaked out at the prices of the EarthSpark toys, so that’s keeping parents away.
Do kids still like Transformers? Well in my experience they do, but they largely liked G1, Prime, RiD15, Bayformers and Rescue Bots. They did NOT like Cyberverse (especially in Japan where I’m told toys are STILL rotting on shelves down there), and now apparently EarthSpark. I didn’t see RotB in theaters so I can’t speak for that, but I did see a lot of kids at Bumblebee when it was in theaters.
The easy answer on its failure, and we all know GriftTubers will latch on to it, is Nightshade. Transformers making it on to Fox News is NEVER a good thing… not helped as the owl continues to be controversial due to the Japanese dub deciding to make them male. (Personally I say split the difference if Nightshade ever reappears and make them he/they but still.) I’ve been clear on my stance that NS is fine and cool, but I’ve also placed more importance on their skills, interests and personality. Their gender is not important to me to get them to like them, but the unfortunate problem is too many people on both sides focus on their identity and it scared off normies and parents. Again, well meaning like the Blue’s Clues Pride Parade, but read the room. There was a way to make NS work and still let them be NB, but they didn’t do it, and I still say the old “they’re Terran because gender means nothing to them as a robotic life form” was the way to do it.
The more nuanced answer however is more complicated. ES wound up being another kids show that was actually for adult fans and not kids, choosing to instead focus on a sense of identity and HYUGE importance on family. Stuff that isn’t bad on its own, but most modern writers and executives don’t understand subtleties: resulting in a lot of Bludgeoning of well meaning ideas in a show that doesn’t feature the Master of Metallikato. Most kindergarten and elementary school kids aren’t THAT interested in that stuff, they like Pokémon, Mario, classic Disney, classic Star Wars and anime in my experience. And Transformers has a certain expectation among people, and while there’s been stuff in the past that involves talking about things (Rad having environmentalist tendencies and Optimus respecting his feelings on needing to protect the environment when a fire breaks out during a Mini-Con Panel hunt, with Tigatron, Optimus and Dinobot having a similar conversation more than once in Beast Wars), if the Autobots AREN’T waging their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons, most aren’t interested.
This feeds into the show’s writing which also I think killed it: the show’s writing is decent but it only gets weaker as it goes along. The overfixation on making the Decepticons into misunderstood bullies who need a hug, despite also showing them perfectly content to kill people, the mixed signals of all the known Earth Decepticons now being friends with the Maltos, Optimus being a doofus the longer the show went on, the heavy IDW slants that weren’t popular at all with general audiences like Autobot Megatron, and Fix Fic Blue Eyed TFP Starscream. There’s also lack of proper follow up on plot threads like Ravage and Mandroid’s friendship with Alex, Schloder’s reasoning for hunting Bee being stupid, mysterious Transformer artifacts, poor reasoning on Energon aliens running amuck, why Cybertron never re-established contact, the lack of understanding why Quintus Prime seems to have such an interest in Earth and why the Emberstone is even here at all and more. Sure some of this might be touched on better in season 2, but do I trust this writing team now? No. No I do not. I think this can be summed up by the rejected episode pitch with Ratchet and Drift. More focus was put on them being husbands, and while both tried offering their own reasonings for the Cyber Sleeves, there was no concrete answer provided on why the kids had the sleeves. Its especially odd in that I wager they would’ve played up Ratchet’s atheism from IDW, but never once have Quintus actually speak up through the sleeves, like a joke in Family Guy where Stewie calls out Brian’s atheism because Jesus crashed on their couch recently. The episode is just… more fluff. People don’t want fluff in Transformers, and we’re seeing that with how well the Energon Universe is continuing to kick everything’s afterburner in comics. IDW never did that. The best selling stuff towards the end was the Marvel G1 prequel and sequels, and the Beast Wars reboot and those were still low in the rungs.
So what can be done to get kids more on board with new TF content? Go back to basics. Transformers desperately needs a new Beast Wars style show to give it a kick in the pants tv show wise. Earthspark I think fancied itself as that but was not meant to be. The Energon Universe is a good start: the true Neo G1 successor to the 80’s cartoon canon so far. The easy joke me and a friend have made is to just adapt the Energon Universe for tv, but it’s not ready yet. I think using it as a spring board would be useful and having the Void Rivals be supporting characters would help expand their exposure. But the simple matter is this: absolutely under no circumstances use IDW/MTMTE post war stuff. I’m willing to go as far as using characters like Adaptus, Nova Prime, Nominus Prime and the Guiding Hand for certain things but that’s it. Classic good Autobots vs evil Decepticons. Megatron is full on evil like in G1, the movies & Unicron Trilogy: no more of this making him into a repentant Anakin nonsense. More of stuff like Optimus’s friendship with Sparkplug and Spike and his consoling of the deer. Earthspark was on the right track making him more lighthearted and closer to the well meaning dad he was in G1, but they pushed it too far the other way like Cyberverse did. Maybe ease back on Bumblebee a smidge, that worked with ROTB and Energon Universe so far, and other than maybe a little mixing and matching (Like Strongarm, Iguanus, Fixit, Barricade, Blackout and other guys being main Bots and Cons for a change), stick to the basics.
Edit: adding more because I had to go run an unexpected errand. Not only the basics, but let’s revisit the idea of a proper anime again. It’s the second major modern anime boom in the States, why DON’T we have a new RiD or Unicron Trilogy type thing? And no I refuse to consider Prime Wars and War For Cybertron anime. I don’t care what Netflix calls it. The fact we don’t have a TF anime currently is baffling; the last time we had an anime was Transformers Go!, and that was more of a one off spiritual Brave successor. I’d rather at this stage Takara commission a new kids anime for Transformers with writers over in Japan scripting the premise who know what they’re doing to make a fun children’s show. Then it can be dubbed and we get Blum, Kaplan, Zeno and other popular/veteran anime dub voice actors to reprise roles/do new ones. I don’t care if Trigger, Toei, Polygon, Science Saru or whoever animates it, my stipulation going forward is 2D animated TF anime, but with designs that are easier to hand draw. Like somewhere between G1 and Transformers Animated. I liked the Armada designs but I can see why Energon and Cybertron opted for CGI for the robots because they became way too technical to draw outside of very specific scenes. If full on 2D robots wasn’t acceptable, the CGI technology used for SSSS. Gridman and Bravern is acceptable, but a full return to 2D animation is preferable.
As for a setting: Earth. Autobots protecting their human friends against the Decepticons. A new gimmick properly implemented from the toys into the show, with the Quintessons as a villainous third party with a stake in the affairs, hiring Mercs like Devcon, RoughEdge, Lockdown and Rampage, or freelancers like the Skuxxoid and villainous Void Rivals to do their dirty work.
Something like that, but above all else cast wise: Blaster and his Cassettes MUST return. And to acknowledge EarthSpark, Hashtag can be his kid sister, with Twitch as one of Hashtag’s own cassettes. Everybody wins.
