Saying The Decameron has aged badly is an understatement.
It'd be more accurate to say that I'm currently reading the ultimate precursor to r/arethestraightsokay.
One of the stories has the following general plot:
A guy's family engages him to a woman, Sophronia.
His friend sees Sophronia and becomes obsessed with her/overcome with lust.
He decides that he doesn't care as much about her as his friend does and decides to "give her" to him "as I would with any of my possessions" (yes, he refers to her as his possession). Accordingly, he helps his friend arrange to assault her on their wedding night, making the friend her lawful bridegroom without her knowledge or consent.
They tell her later and she leaves, telling her family. They are rightfully angry that the man they trusted lied to them and her in order to trick her into marrying a relative stranger, and make the whole affair public. They're also angry at the rapist.
In order to calm the situation down, the friend/rapist calls a huge meeting to talk about how they shouldn't be angry, because a) the gods willed him to have this woman, b) the original fiancé was acting within the sacred and uncriticizable bounds of friendship, c) he's better than his friend because he's richer and comes from a better city (Rome instead of Athens), d) "she was carefully, discreetly, and honorably given" to him in contrast to those awful women who elope or get married after becoming pregnant, e) it was her fault for just assuming that the man who came into her dark bedroom on her wedding night and asked her to confirm that she wanted to marry him, then had sex with her, was the man she'd just publicly married, and f) if they don't let him take her to Rome with him "as is [his] right," he'll wage war.
Inexplicably, they don't stone him to death, and he gets everything he wants.
The first guy becomes destitute and gets driven out of Athens. Because he's overly dramatic, he goes to Rome and, when his old friend doesn't recognize him, arranges to have himself falsely arrested for murder.
The rapist finds out and accuses himself of the same crime.
Inexplicably, the real criminal is driven by pity to confess.
Even more inexplicably, the praetor is fine with all of this and doesn't punish either of them for wasting his time.
The emperor gets involved and absolves the actual criminal and both friends.
The rapist makes his old friend co-owner all his stuff and "gave [him] as his wife one of his young sisters."

What’s your favorite exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium?
Mines the deep sea tank, I could just sit in front of it for hours.
Impossible to decide. It's like deciding on my favorite child.
The entire Into the Deep exhibit is mind-blowing. It sucks that it's only a temporary exhibit, but it'll probably be around for several more years. The first time I saw the Japanese spider crabs there.... I felt like I instantly reverted to a 12 year old. I was 24 LOL
The bottom layer of the Open Seas tank, which is now integrated as the first section of Into the Deep, also deserves a shout-out. When I was a kid I used to lay down on the slanted concrete slab below the titled glass, and you can look directly up and see the undersides of everything that passes by. The Mahi Mahi in particular scatter light in rainbows around them. It's gorgeous. I still do that these days, but it's more brutal on my knees and I'm a tad bit too tall to do it comfortably for long periods of time.
If I have to choose, the shale reef area/deep reef area of the Monterey Bay Habitats tank is my lifelong favorite, though. It's underappreciated alongside all the other exhibits, but there's so much in there that's iconic- but mostly, I love the insane variety of massive rockfish in their, including Boccacios. And then you have the giants of sevengills sharks and giant sea bass swimming over as you fixate on the tiny fish flitting between the ricks. My normie account social media pfp for a long time was the silhouette of me sitting in one of the glass "bubbles" on that tank, staring into the depths beyond. The white plume anemones also remind me of one of my favorite dive sites, which is also nearby.
And of course, ya gotta say hi to Rosa, or her compatriots if she's not in exhibit. It's mandatory.
In general, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a love letter to California's marine life, and I love it so much.

Pathologic fanfic writers i have an idea.
What if. A group of 10-11 people got together and created a Pathologic inspired variation of Boccacio's Decameron (but with just 10 stories instead of 100 bc god no).
The general premise would be pretty similar to the original- 10 characters secluding themselves to escape the Sand Pest. In order to pass time they tell each other stories. Think about the possibilities:
- every story could be a reflection of a character's personality
- different writing/narrative styles!
- symbolism and metaphors that reveal interesting things about each character (backstory, hidden feelings, life philosophies, biggest regrets, fears etc.)
- the stories could range from completely bonkers to somber and serious
Sooo that's just an idea i had. I don't think I'd be able to write something like this myself (too little time sob) but I think that is could still be an interesting concept!

TOP 05 FAVORITE TYPES OF STORIES

01. The Search for the Lost Husband and The Persecuted Lady
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those are considered the two most widespread kind of folktales. What personally touches me the most about these stories is how they explore the resilience of its female heroines, wich we often underestimake as weakness in real life women.
The Search for the Lost Husband touches on the anxiety about arranged marriages, and how women feared they would be sold by their fathers to wild, monstrous beasts, specially because their husbands are full of secrets. Them the heroines break a taboo, discovering the secret, wich makes the husband depart full of fears and insecurity, while the heroine, having grown in love for the husband, reveals courage and confidence to go in a long, dangerous journey to, now in her own terms, win back her beloved. Rather than end the narrative with the marriage celebrations, this kind of story explores what it takes to keep the marriage.
The Persecuted Lady touches in the domestic drama of women who suffer familial abuse, be it the work force exploitation imposed by a stepmother, the appearance shaming imposed by a birth mother, the sexist neglect of a father or grandfather, or the sexual harassment committed by a father. In some tales, the heroines suffer in silence at their own homes, in others, usually under a disguise that makes her look ugly by societal standards (like a straw coat or an animal’s skin), she runs away and works in servitude in another place, also suffering abuse from the employers, until she has the chance to enjoy at least three festive occasions and catch the eyes of a handsome and young rich suitor (usually a Prince), who uses a piece of garment like a shoe or ring to identify the heroine and marry her. The heroine has a long time to cope with harsh situations, but keeps hopefull for better days, and finds the love and happiness that she didn’t had back at home.
My favorite Search for the Lost Husband tales are The Black Bull of Norroway, The Singing Springing Lark and The Iron Stove. My favorite Persecuted Lady tales are Dona Labismínia, Bicho de Palha, Maria Borralheira, Donkeyskin, Thousand Furs, Princess in a Leather Burqa, Florinda, The Three Sisters, The Tale of Popelka, Tattercoats and Cap’O Rushes.
02. The Story Inside the Story
Tumblr media
This is when one character presents a fictional narrative to another character, and the narrative presented is just as engaging as the in universe “real” characters we have been accompanying. Sometimes the characters are just amusing themselves with a fun story, and other times the story has a thematic moral relevance to the “real life” situation they are living. The Story Inside the Story can take the form of A Book Within the Book, A Play Within the Play, A Movie Within the Movie, and so forward. The most famous example, and still my favorite, of Story Inside the Story is probably the One Thousand and One Nights book. Other famous examples include Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Giovanni Boccacio’s Decameron.
03. The Family Saga
Tumblr media
When the story stars being about a character, them this character dies and we move on to see the story of that character’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, all the while we see their different points of view about the political, cultural and societal changes troughout history. My favorite Family Sagas are the myth of The Mahabharata, the myth of King Arthur, Shakespeare’s Henriad and Rose Tetralogy cycle of plays, Érico Veríssimo’s novel Time and the Wind and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude.
04. The Band of Heroes in a Quest
Tumblr media
A group of people who in normal circumstance unlikely would meet and talk to each other is united by fantastical circunstances to go on a quest. The object of the quest varies: it could be a treasure, a search for spiritual enlightment, save an innocent in distress, destroy a cursed artifact or eliminate an ancient evil and save the world they know from doom.
My favorite examples Band of Heroes in a Quest are probably the Vampire Hunters from Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel, the Fellowship of the Ring from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novel and the Bronze Saints from Toei’s Saint Seiya anime.
05. Deal with the Devil
Tumblr media
A human being who makes a deal, out of either desperation or pure ambition, promising his soul to the Devil. Sometimes the deal is selling the soul right away, other times the deal is a bet, where if the human fails at accomplishing a task, the Devil will take their soul  to suffer eternally in Hell. We accompany the main character’s journey as he asks: should I use what the Devil gaved me for my own benefit, or should I use it to help other people in need? If I use it to help people in need, so I am redeemed, or my deal with the Devil will forever tarnish me as an evil person? Was I wise in making this deal? Is the Devil truly evil, or is he just testing the evil I may have inside me?
There are two ways in wich this story ends: either the main character escapes with his soul redeemed (usually by a loophole in the contract) or he has sank so low in doing evil deeds that the Devil wins and takes his soul to Hell. The most famous example of a Deal with the Devil kind of story is the german myth of Doctor Faust.

Ok I want to talk about the litterature thing in druck and Mailins protesting. I study literature, which means I’ve read a lot of stuff by men that absolutely fucking suck. Have you guys heard of Pamela by Samuel Richardson? It’s not great. However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s the importance of literature of the past, no matter how much I hate it.
Pamela by Richardson is rapey and misogynistic in many ways, and very obviously written by a man. It is also one of the more prominent western stories that centers a female and has her as the main narrator and protagonists. He gives her an inner life.
I will slam dunk August Strindberg till the day I die, but my literature teacher was dying on the hill that his literature still had value because he was never afraid to experiment with his texts.
I understand how much it sucks to read texts that feel outdated ass hell, but without those texts we wouldn’t be here right now. No one is required to read classics on their free time, and trust me, some of them are not worth your time at all. But schools still teach them because it’s part of a general education. The Iliad and the Odyssey, or just Ancient Greece in general, is notorious for its hatred of women. But so much of Western literature depends on the legacy of these works.
The more I learn of literature from the past, the more it connects with the literature of today, and it is a very exciting experience. Mailin has every right to shit on books by white men, especially really misogynistic ones. I do it all the time. And she can start book clubs where female authors are centered, where diverse voices can be heard.
But removing white men from the curriculum isn’t doing anything but removing a huge chunk of the literary canon that exists, whilst simultaneously ignoring the fact that there are a lot of women and people of colour who exist in this category as well. Every story written by a woman from the past will not necessarily age well in a modern lens, but it doesn’t mean it should be excluded either.
Sorry for ranting, but this storyline is stupid. Not every white man from the past wrote misogynistic stories (Carl Jonas Love Almqvist is my best friend actually), and Mailin legit just comes across as ignorant. Can’t believe she makes me defend white male authors (my behated) but here I am. Boccacio was cool actually, change my mind. Don Quixote is one of the best stories ever written, don’t @ me. The offensive literature of our past is in direct dialogue with our more diverse literature of the future, and it gives us a Time Machine into the past and how people were thinking. It’s important as hell.
I’m gonna shut up now.

New Post has been published on https://eserozetleri.com/dunya-edebiyatinda-ilk-roman-hangisidir/
