Dave Angel played a big part in the first wave of UK techno and was one of the scene’s early pioneers, but what sets him apart from the majority of his peers is that he’s still around, pushing out tracks to this very day. Growing up in a musically diverse household in which his dad was a jazz musician and his sister is rapper Monie Love, Angel immersed himself in England’s acid house scene. He became a DJ on pirate radio in the late 80s and spun alongside now drum and bass legends Fabio and Grooverider

.Angel’s first release, an acid-fueled remix of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” was an instant hit, reaching #23 on the UK singles chart in 1990. It was a breaks track but with a dark Detroit techno type of vibe. And as the characteristics of techno became more fully fleshed out throughout the early 90s, Angel would become a definitive leader of the UK’s scene

.But Dave Angel isn't just strictly a techno guy. He can craft nifty house tracks, too, and in '98, he did just that with the accurately titled "Bodypunch Funk," which, basically, depending on how hard the kick drum is hitting at certain points, could either be considered techno or house. The track first appeared on a compilation called Techno Nations 8, released by the London label, Kickin Records. Then the following year, Angel released it as the lead track on his own two-song EP called Knockout. And in October of that same year, Carl Cox included it on his double-discer Non Stop 2000.

It's not really apparent when you first hear this song, but the thing that really makes it go is its warm, yet subtle bassline. Angel's got the rustling techno hi-hats, the glassily shimmering synths, the fun, little flute melody, and the expanding hand drum rhyrhms all working over that backbeat, but the piece that gives the track its funkiness is really that roving, humming bass underneath that plays along to the synth, first coming in a wave and then a few stabs. Once you pick up on the bass, you realize just how important it is to the whole track. Without it, the song really should've just been called "Bodypunch".
