Bossam: Steal the Fate. 7-8
Story: 8-9
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Haechi (kdrama); Queen: Love and War (kdrama); 100 Days My Prince (kdrama)
What could of been an outstanding drama became only a mediocre historical drama for me. It fell into the draggy trap, with the repetitive back and forth that many dramas unfortunately fall into. There was many storylines that I felt was wasted and it just fell into a sour lump by the middle let half. It was sooo good too in the first half, especially with the chemistry between both Yuri an Jung ll Woo. I felt totally cheated too by that rushed ending. 🤬 In some ways I felt if they shortened the drama by editing it down some but working on a less rushed ending, this would’ve been a hit throughout. Nonetheless I still enjoyed it, just not as much as I thought I originally had in the first half.

Am I the only one who's mad about Lee Dae Yeob's ending? His life was the worst of all. He went through a lot but remained pure and innocent no matter what. He lost his love but was always there not only for her but for her lover as well. He remained faithful to his love, friends and even the family that betrayed him. What was the writer's intention by suddenly revealing his real identity when there was no plan to work on his story. Him being a prince had no impact on the show... as his death. Why did they have to kill such good character when they could just let him live happily with his mother? That guy deserved to be happy for once 😑

hello💗 love your writing and your blog, you’re so so talented
AND I just wanted to ask if you have any good court drama recs lmao
💕
Thank you! And oh yes 👀
At the time of those tags I was knee-deep in the waters of Chinese web novels (recs from that journey are The Rebirth of an Ill-Fated Consort, Eight Treasures Trousseau, Like Pearl and Jade; Your Mileage May Vary, however, since I like slow-paced things) but I also have some drama-proper recs, namely:
Magnificent Century (Turkish production, follows the ascent of Suleyman the Magnificent’s wife in the harem; liberties are taken, but it’s actually not that unfaithful to the truth, and Meryem Uzerli is...honestly a revelation)
Nirvana in Fire. Honestly I cannot recommend this one enough. It’s just so—so!!
Bossam: Steal the Fate is partly this. Other Korean recs include The Crowned Clown and Mr. Queen, and I heartily recommend watching them in that order, actually, because you will need the levity Mr. Queen has, particularly early on, to cope.
From the web novels (additional rec: The Remarried Empress. This is a Korean work, and is currently being serialized as a webtoon, also, with very pretty art) I went on to reading Katie Quinn’s series of books set in Rome, which were...sadly only decent, so not a particularly strong rec, just a mention. Instead I’ll rec Megan Whalen Turner’s sequels to The Thief, which turn into this: they are The Queen of Attolia; The King of Attolia; A Conspiracy of Kings & Thick as Thieves.
Also, last year Jacqueline Carey utterly rewired my brain, particularly with Phedre’s trilogy (Kushiel’s Dart, Kushiel’s Chosen, Kushiel’s Avatar) but while court drama features in these, it’s not the point, exactly.
Hopefully this is a wide enough net of things for you to find something you enjoy within it ^^

[INFO] EXO Suho to appear in new MBN historical drama!
"Suho will appear in MBN's new drama 'The Crown Prince Disappeared' (tentative title). 'The Crown Prince Disappeared' depicts a Joseon version of a romantic comedy that takes place when the crown prince is bossed around by a woman who will become the crown prince. The romance between the two young people, which blooms on the escape journey where they must risk their lives at every moment, is expected to bring a new breath of spring to the viewers. [...] In particular, as it is his first attempt at a historical drama, expectations are heightened for his acting. Meanwhile, 'The Crown Prince Disappeared' was written by Kim Ji-soo and Park Chul, who wrote the drama 'Bossam: Steal the Fate,' which recorded the highest ratings in MBN history in May last year." in lieu of working on my taxes
11pm, sunday, march 26, 2023
big ol' spoilers for the second book of the scholomance series and the movie RRR (2022)! plus a song you likely haven't heard of, a puzzle game, and assorted ramblings. it's an ilcb, what can i say.
reading stayed up later than i intended this past thursday and then couldn't settle until i'd stayed up even later, finishing the last graduate (naomi novik). some stuff in a deadly education which irked me remained true in this one-- big example, so much of how el relates to people, orion specifically but the enclavers in general, is to be shocked because they don't understand something that ~everyone else gets~, which? i guess effectively introduces us to her attitude and stance towards the world, and (to a lesser extent) to the world itself, but el saying 'we all never did x' or 'everyone thought y' always made me want to ask, how do you know this? having a first-person narrator do exposition about the world is one thing, but having them make general statements about attitudes or thoughts of other people (especially when that same first-person narrator has supposedly spent her first three+ years a social outcast?) just got to me after a while. although, definitely believable as a smarter-than-you high schooler. and, on the flip side, i think that there were enough moments in this one where el had her assumptions challenged, or the things that 'everyone just got' were turned upside down, that i will accept it as a narrative choice. i love a book that establishes a system and then explodes it-- for that, i definitely prefer this one to its precursor. and i ended up really feeling for the scholomance itself! all its sass and vicious attempts to uphold its mission took on this really moving flavor by the end.
Tumblr media
also working on: jasmine throne, ebook; dial a for aunties, audiobook; the brothers karamazov, ebook (for bedtimes); and vol. three of heaven official's blessing (print).
watching watched RRR (2022) over the course of the week, with a break at the 1.5hour mark where there's a clear intermission. because of that, i think by the time i'd come back for the second 'act', i'd more or less acclimated and wasn't as shocked or overwhelmed by the Sensory Everything of it anymore? so despite the massive ~reveal~ in the second act, that rama raju has been under deep cover the whole time he's been working his way up in the ranks of the army, i wasn't quite as hype the second time. also, i feel like that deep cover reveal actually simplified his character for me; i had been sort of fascinated by the idea that he was a sincere supporter of the people oppressing him, and was fascinated to try and understand why, what from his past had caused that, and how he could possibly be brought around or what could change his mind-- so the fact that all of it had been a pain-staking act felt like a removal of a layer of complexity, rather than an addition? plus, like-- just because you beat and killed innocent people for the sake of maintaining your cover, doesn't mean you...didn't beat and kill them...but it was very Tragic and Difficult for him, you know. and i guess in a way, the decision to break his cover for the sake of trying to salvage bheem's friendship, and support bheem doing what was right, does mean that he had a major change of heart? i liked the water-coded-character balancing out the fire-coded-character, i liked the song and dance numbers esp. naatu naatu, i liked the hyper-color saturation and the bromance. both of the leads killed it, and good lord ram charan is outrageously, offensively good-looking. he had a little of the jason momoa eyebrow in the later half, with the long hair? you agree.
Tumblr media
also watched: crazy, stupid, love (2011) which was a really interesting look back into an era of film and society which i did live through but which i was not, like, paying attention to at the time; episode 14 of bossam: steal the fate with @hematiterings which will deserve its own segment soon, it continues to impress and constantly surprise us; and the first episode of the new season of shadow and bone which as someone who read the crow books but none of the actual s+b series was a great time. i love seeing these characters, i love seeing this world, i have a lot more affection for it now that there are these faces and these visual aesthetics attached, it makes all of it far more interesting. big crush remains on jessie mei li, surprising myself by also now appreciating nina in a new and serious way.
listening new hozier good. new fall out boy good. others more qualified and knowledgeable than i will be able to tell you why, but right now the strings-into-big powerful rock chords buildup that happens in 'love from the other side' is just playing on a loop in my head. but in the last week i think i actually listened to this song the most, a surprise from my spotify discover weekly which i wasn't thinking too hard about and then the steel? guitar? chiming in the background really sank in and i couldn't get enough of it. it's not not surf rock. the chorus is a groove. the ambivalence about gender is a bop. i don't know anything about NoSo, but now i'd like to.
youtube
playing two different weekend visits to my friend with gamepass means i've gotten to try out a bunch of different great games lately. failed quite spectacularly at a crash bandicoot racing game (couldn't resist picking my lil guy based on cute vibes over, like, driving features); laughed ourselves to fucking tears playing the fighting (?) game gang beasts (your fighters are so floppy); and then today we had quite a good time with escape academy in two player mode. honestly so satisfying and good, but the puzzles are legitimately tricky and i think i'd have gotten very frustrated on my own. it felt like doing an escape room, in the best way, in that you could shout out what you were seeing at one side of the room and the other person could be playing with the lock and inputting what you were saying, etc. the character design on the different npcs is very good, the art and all the design is great; i am very curious to get more of the lore about the founders (a group of friends who all have a lot of Past, it's almost locked tomb-esque, if i may); there are many. many. puns.
Tumblr media
making daubed some superglue on the broken egg cup! ended up breaking it a little bit more in the process, but it's back together now. not my neatest job, but better than it was. also trimmed up the weird dangling tree limb over the back porch, put the christmas lights and wreath in the basement at last, and sent a card i'd been sitting on for far too long. this hasn't quite unclogged my letter-and-card-writing flow, but it's a start.
Tumblr media
working on two zoom talks down, one and a half summer jobs applied for, one summer travel grant due at the end of the week, and now actual chapter writing to get back to. since nobody seems to notice or mind if my committee doesn't meet until after the semester is over (oops), i've got a bit of extra time. for now, the real challenge is probably catching up on RA hours i've neglected this month, since those are actual income hahahah alas. luckily, i think a friend solved one of the mystery words i'd been stuck on in this round of RAship work, which will help a bit this week.

EXO Suho to Star in His First Historical Drama as a Crown Prince
Tumblr media
EXO Suho is set to make his historical drama debut as a crown prince who gets kidnapped by his bride-to-be. The idol-actor has confirmed his role in the upcoming MBN drama “The Crown Prince Has Disappeared” (working title), a romantic comedy with a twist of suspense.
What is “The Crown Prince Has Disappeared” About?
“The Crown Prince Has Disappeared” is a historical drama that revolves around the traditional Joseon era marriage practice of “bossam”, which means stealing a bride or groom away by wrapping them up in a blanket and carrying them out of their homes in the middle of the night.
Tumblr media
(Photo : Twitter / X) The drama will follow the story of a crown prince who is kidnapped by a woman who is supposed to be his wife. However, instead of being a submissive bride, she turns out to be a bossy and fearless woman who makes the crown prince do whatever she wants. The two end up on a runaway journey, where they face various dangers and enemies, but also develop feelings for each other. The drama is written by Kim Ji Soo and Park Chul, who also penned the hit drama “Bossam: Steal the Fate”, which starred Jung Woo and SNSD Yuri. The drama broke the record for the highest viewership ratings in MBN history, reaching 9.6 percent.
Who is EXO’s Suho Playing in the Drama?
EXO’s Suho will play the role of the crown prince, who is described as a handsome and intelligent man who has a gentle and warm personality. He is the heir to the throne, but he has no interest in politics or power. He prefers to enjoy his life as a free-spirited artist, who loves painting and music.
Tumblr media
(Photo : JTBC) EXO Suho However, his peaceful life is turned upside down when he is kidnapped by a woman on his wedding night. He soon realizes that she is not his intended bride, but someone else who has a hidden agenda. He tries to escape from her, but he finds himself drawn to her adventurous and courageous spirit. This will be Suho’s first historical drama role since his debut as an actor. He has previously starred in dramas such as “The Universe’s Star”, “Rich Man”, and “Behind Your Touch”. He is also expected to make a cameo appearance in the second season of “Arthdal Chronicles”.
When Will the Drama Air and Where Can You Watch It?
“The Crown Prince Has Disappeared” is scheduled to air in the first half of 2024 on MBN, a cable channel in South Korea. There is no official confirmation yet on whether the drama will be available on any streaming platforms outside Korea.
Tumblr media

in lieu of a commonplace book: holiday edition
monday, dec 5, 2022 ~ 9pm ----> thursday, dec 22, 2022 ~ 4pm  ---->
                                      saturday, dec 24, 2022 ~ 4pm
i’ve had this one languishing in drafts for so long that it’s now a holiday ilcb! stay warm out there, get yourself something nice to drink and light a candle or two or three, i am sending you a hug and a far-too-long post.
Tumblr media
reading brrr what did i just finish. when i first drafted this post it was wintering by katherine may. fine premise, i generally accept her point about life inevitably having periods of winter and learning from them. i like the creativity of her different chapter topics. i am tepid to cool about the mix of research and creative writing, mostly because it wasn’t as scientific as i would have liked, and the bits of memoir turned me off at first. i’ve been reading more nonfiction the last few weeks, so i’m also here to report that index, a history of by dennis duncan was quite entertaining for being a book about a piece of book apparatus, and it will probably be a source of many good party facts for the next few months. i began listening to it as an audiobook though, and i must say the melifluous narrator’s voice was a) very entertaining because he had a really hard time with the latin and b) did his best with the fact that many of the examples in a book about indexes (indices?) were just lists of things and page numbers. switching back to print was a good move, imho.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
book of the month and possible new entry in my top ten of the year, though, was the goblin emperor by katherine addison, which housemate G gave me as an early christmas present and which was absolutely my shit, between the shakespearean language and the shakespearean court intrigue. the emotional weight of a character shifting from the formal ‘we’ to the informal ‘i’ midsentence! the gradual building of a totally new world and language system! all the supporting cast coming to love the main character in ways that he can’t quite believe but which are clear to the reader! it reminded me of the best bits of the hands of the emperor in that way, and it ranks alongside that one as far as being ‘books that i didn’t want to end.’ the name of the ‘untheileneise’ court is evocative of ‘unseelie’, ever so slightly, and the flavor combination of reading this while also watching the d20 show mentioned below has been delectable.
Tumblr media
watching couple of different contenders for this topic, surprisingly, between continuing to watch bossam: steal the fate with @hematiterings and fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood with @hematiterings and @pep-squad-lizzie, and having watched crouching tiger, hidden dragon and 20 minutes of a random episode of the white lotus on the plane, or now having been at my parents’ for a minute having started enjoying miss scarlet and the duke and three pines with them. on my own, though, it’s been dimension 20-- i bought a year’s subscription for myself as a present, and the entire visual and storytelling aesthetic of a court of fey and flowers has been hitting so right. i love aabria’s dm style, i thought this during exandria unlimited too (and i just did a cursory search of ilcb posts to make sure i haven’t said this already?? if i have please forgive me)-- there’s a richness and glitter to her narration and the details she chooses to highlight. and everyone in this group is doing such a great job, i’m in ep 2 ‘the great hart hunt’ right now and just, the different strategies each of the characters has selected to solve the puzzle, the combination of more court intrigue with humor and whatever earnest emotion peeps out sometimes, plus the slightly-different-but-equally-creative take on goblins from brennan and k.p. hobb here as opposed to the goblin emperor (they both have emotive ears!) is very good to me, personally.
Tumblr media
listening mostly podcasts, if i’m honest. i put on an 8-hours-of-gentle-christmas-carols yule log youtube video today, but really i’ve been listening most to the WBUR podcast last seen when doing dishes or cooking or otherwise getting the streets of this city back under my feet. the episode on the jewel heist is where i started, while the one on chinese pie / pâté chinois and the franco-american/quebecois in new england gave me an emotion. this evening, though, there will be christmas music and yes that is a threat.
Tumblr media
playing more stardew (while enjoying fey and flowers in the other window) but i’ve decided i can start a new game for a new year! while i work out how to download things from the itch.io bundle i bought literally two years ago, and scroll through the under $10 section on steam’s sale, recommendations are welcome. things i’m intrigued by: spiritfarer! a dragon age? i do not have a gaming laptop, a desktop computer, or a good gaming rig in any sense, and i will be choosing based entirely on Vibes (art / music / tone / narrative / writing etc), but input and suggestions are always welcome! also i tried to teach my dad 2048 and it went about as well as i could have hoped. also i asked for a zelda DS game for christmas like it’s 2013.
Tumblr media
making there was a lot that could have gone into this section over the last few weeks, if i’d posted it when i initially started thinking about it-- i hung a poster! remounted a shelf! and now have dried orange slices for last-minute ornaments and made many (MANY) molasses-ginger cookies, and am in the process of mulling apple juice (california apparently not believing in proper cloudy apple cider). we’re travelling to see family the day after boxing day, so any real holiday baking will probably happen once we’re there, rather than being made now and then having to be frozen or eaten all in a rush-- so nothing to report on the bread / pie / candy front. yet. CIDER UPDATE: it tastes like hot apple juice. luckily irish coffee is also an option now.
working on but it’s christmas! i hear you cry. yes, and all free time is time you could be working on your journal piece, i reply. i’ve also been grinding through RAship hours before the end of the year, even though my contract continues until the end of april, because the more i can get done now the easier the spring will be. also i’m reading some diss chapters for a friend (self-serving also because his topic is close enough to mine that i can call this research!) and working on a letter of support for a prof who’s been good to me over the years and who is up for a teaching award. my journal piece is a cleaned-up version of a talk i gave, so really it’s a question of prettying-up the footnotes and inserting better citations, and trying to make it Good Enough while not too different / not rewriting it entirely. what does this actually look like? hell if i know, but unless someone gets back to me about image permissions it’s a moot point anyway. happy new year to me.
