Fluffy Feburary [2024], Day 2 Prompt- Eavesdrop @fluffyfebruary
It had all started very simply, or well... Ronodin thought it had started very simply, he still wasn't quite sure how it had gotten to this point. With him sat in the Sorenson's living room, a Christmas tree up in the corner with several people glancing cautiously at him- as they should.
He had simply been listening in on Kendra and his cousin, and really, the should know better then to talk where someone could easily eavesdrop. And yet somehow, he was caught! Him! Master of hiding and deception and a million other things. (No, he was not going to give that dragon credit for finding him.)
And so. Here he sat in the Sorenson's living room. Ruth(?) staring at him, no amusement on her face as she held a crossbow- a loaded crossbow!- at his face. A few feet to her left was a rather boring looking man that he couldn't recall that name of (David? Daniel? Whatever.). And a satyr! Now, he didn't really have anything truly against them but... really? A satyr in their house? Did they not care about the furniture?
Nearest to him was his beloved cousin, son of the Fairy Queen, Bracken. And opposite his (annoying) cousin was the Fairy Queen's handmaiden, Kendra. Really, if anything it was their whole fault he was here!
Once he'd been found someone had ushered Seth away, which Ronodin found quite rude. Sure, he might've emotionally manipulated him- but everyone emotionally manipulated someone at one point or another!
...
...three hours had passed. Somewhere after the half hour mark the satyr had left the house, but promising that he'd be back later with another satyr (Nick? Newel?).
Then after the hour the plain man (Dale!) had stood up and said that he needed to get back to his chores, not before leveling a glare at him though. Really! The nerve of these people. Did they not understand how rude they were being to him?
Around two hours later, when the sun was making its descent Ruth had reluctantly stood up and made Kendra and his cousin promise to keep an eye on him before she disappeared.
And so, after the three hour mark Kendra had inquired if he would like something to eat. Now, you must understand- he was not a picky person when it came to food. But he had very much laughed in her face, which quickly made her retract the offer of food.
At the realization that she seriously wasn't going to get him food unless he apologized he pouted. Wasn't she supposed to be a 'good guy'? What kind of good guy didn't feed their guests?
Another half an hour later he finally caved and (politely) asked her to get him something to eat. Since really, he did need to eat something. Before she'd left she had made eye contact with his cousin that seemed to make him promise to keep an eye on Ronodin.
...
...an unknown amount of time later he'd been released from him bondage.
And somehow he was... enjoying spending time with his (moronic) cousin and Kendra. Perhaps it was because he felt some... peace, from being around just the two of them. The light magic that emanated from them felt like a cool balm against his skin. Like a memory of something that had once been familiar to him.
He found himself lowering his guard around the two. The barbs coming from him not feeling as venomous as they should, and the ones coming from his friends enemies didn't feel as venomous as they should either. They felt... like the snark one would expect from people who had known each other their entire lives and were friends. Not two unicorns and a mortal(?) handmaiden to the Fairy Queen who were enemies.
At some point, Ronodin realized that there was a blanket wrapped around the three of them, with another spread across their laps. He was stuck in between them but it didn't feel bad... it felt safe. Even as he felt Kendra's head on his shoulder, soft breathing coming from her as her eyelids fluttered. Or his cousin's soft voice that made him feel like he was a young unicorn again and his older cousin was telling him stories.
It felt like home. That was his only thought as he felt himself rest his head on Kendra's and slowly drift off to sleep.

Okay so come with me on this journey I am going insane about Ronodin:
Okay so we know that Ronodin was raised in the unicorn royal family like they were his own son. He and Bracken were extremely close. We know that Ronodin was a radicalist about interacting with multiple types of magical creatures and mortals and that earned disapproval. We know that Bracken later emulates this behavior.
When Ronodin betrays his family and corrupts himself its out of love, he wants to avenge his family and thinks he has found the best way to do so without considering that he might be wrong. He is doing this with good intentions, Ronodin dresses up everything he does with good intentions, even when he helps murder people he says its for good intentions. Ronodin cannot fathom the idea that good intentions can't fix a problem or justify harm.
Later on in his villainy (and GOD I wish we got to see the aftermath of what happened when Ronodin destroyed that mushroom and the spear, what must've it felt to so thoroughly destroy yourself in the name of your family only to realize that you doomed them. Was it the exile or the feeling that /he could still fix this if he kept going/ that drove him to side with the demons?) Ronodin seems incapable of not including the term family, of getting close. He claims Seth as a brother in order to replace the one he lost, he's pouring resources into corrupting Bracken so they can have something in common again, when he infiltrates the Giants he does so by trying to establish a relationship with the Queen. Hell his proposal to Kendra might have been his last ditch effort to finally have some kind of connection once he realized that having the fairy crown wasn't fixing him. He's craving that validation, that sense of belonging. He could have it if he wanted, if he admitted to what he actually wants but he cannot accept redemption or apologizing because he still is incapable of understanding that he might've been wrong to take action on his own.
Bracken is hunting him down. He treats this like its his own burden to bear, he let Ronodin down by not being there to help. After Ronodin -was exiled/corrupted/died/left- Bracken leaves the Fairy Realm to investigate mortal societies and see what Ronodin saw that made him choose to do what he did. When they fight Bracken seems incapable of actually finishing him off, Ronodin also refuses to actually put an end to this. Ronodin had Bracken literally as close to the void as the two of them could physically bear and he tries to say that he needs more to corrupt him???
In short I'll finish this analysis by saying this: I was shown the most insane little jesterman imaginable who could've been the cornerstone to a story about themes of family and siblings and betrayal and instead of finishing his arc in a meaningful way that mirrors Seth and Kendra Ronodin gets deus ex machina'd away by actual god after everyone completely bypasses their narrative character flaws (except Kendra by the way!!! Because she is literally just standing there doing NOTHING WRONG) by dipping in some magic water because fuck actually using meaningful imagery to communicate what we wanna say these characters need to get ACTUALLY BAPTISED.

Part 1 of drawing the daughters in law of Queen Elaena IV!
Lady Sabitha Tully, the wife of Elaena’s third son and hand of the king to his older brother, prince Aeron, born in 599 AC
She was the eldest child of Lord Tully by his first wife, who died in childbirth giving birth to her third daughter, born in 602 AC at Riverrun, Sabitha married prince Aeron at the age of 18, after having been infatuated with the prince for a year in which the two exchanged frequent letters, their hasty wedding broke her engagement to the heir of house Bracken and left her and her fathers relationship in ruin, Lady Sabitha returned to court with her husband, who had laid off his studies at the citadel to be with her instead, where she would soon grow influential and support her husband in ruling the seven kingdoms as hand. She was known to be a fearless woman, that stood her ground in battle, as well as court, where she held a reputation for being sharp tongued and honest, though rarely cruel. Lady Sabitha sat as many council meetings as did her husband and her good brother, the king, valued her as an advisor, for she was as logical and pragmatic a thinker, as she was well spoken. She had six daughters, whom she loved, though she often said her relationship with them was more that of a father and his children, as she felt she held none of the warmth a mother should have. The girls where raised more by her younger sister and prince Aeron than by Sabitha, although she made a habit of carrying the girls with her to her study as well as council meetings when they where babes.
Lady Beatriz Corbray, the wife of Elaena’s seventh son, a famous warrior, prince Baelor, born in 609 AC
Born in 604 AC, Beatriz was the only daughter of Lord Jonos Corbray, who was said to cherish her most among her many brothers and therefore allowed her to do as she pleased, pursuing her great love for horse riding, archery, falconry and swordsmanship alongside her brothers, some say her father even allowed her to compete in jousts disguised as a mystery knight. She was known to be tall with weathered, angular features and a long mane of untamed curls, and while boys had been a passing fancy of her in the past, beyond the occasional flirt with one of her fathers knights or a visiting nobleman’s son, it is said that Beatriz found a love out of fairy tales in prince Baelor. The singers tell us that the prince stumbled upon the wild Lady in the year 630 AC, while traveling to a tourney at the Eyrie, his group had been attacked by mountain clan men and separated, Lady Bea, disguised as a man was roaming the Forrest as she often did and the two became companions upon their travels, some say prince Baelor fell for her while still under the impression that she was a man, true or not, Lady Bea disappeared upon their arrival at the Eyrie, only for Baelor to spot her at her fathers side during the tourney, grinning widely at him as it is said. After that they where wed within a week, at her fathers castle in the Vale. They would end up having only two children, a daughter in 632 and a son five years later.
Lady Alanna Velaryon, the wife of Elaena’s second son and lord of the tides, prince Daemion, born in 595 AC
Alanna was born in 598 AC to the son and daughter of a cousin of Queen Elaena’s mother, Lady Larissa Velaryon, she was known throughout the seven kingdoms for her immense beauty and talent with the harp, as well as her singing voice. She had been betrothed to prince Daemion, who would inherit Driftmark from his grandmother some day, as a babe and had been send to court at only 11 to become close with her future husband. While his brothers secured themselves great love matches Daemions love laid with the sea, with his dragon, and with his older brother, the king, whoms most adamant supporter he was. Alanna and her husband were friends and cousins rather than lovers, even after they were wed on Driftmark in 613 AC. While her husband traveled the world or spend his time at court, advising his brother, Alanna ruled as the Lady of Driftmark and preferred to surround herself with other women. Her closest companion and dearest friend was the Lady Larrya of Lsy, whom was the widow of her cousin. Lady Aly, as she was called by her friend Larrya, had three children with her husband, triplets, two sons and one girl, born in 618 AC, on which she doted all her life.

ok, so I know I already made this joke BUT chi and I were re-reading dragonwatch and the part where br*cken’s like “hey kendra why don’t you ever swim with the naiads they’re silly and harmless” and kendra’s like “uhh yeah until they drown me” is, as chi pointed out, TOO fitting for this vine

Fun thing to note is that Bracken is the only son of the Fairy Queen and like her favorite kid.
He’s the one that she calls for all major stuff. He’s the one she has lead the forces in war. He’s the one she calls for help dealing with threats in her realm. He’s the one she risked her crown to save.
And like... I’m sorry but I’m 90% sure he’s not the oldest and has multiple older sisters and... this reeks of “the treasured son who we had at last”. The fairies should literally be matriarchal because they don’t have guys but it’s the boy that’s treasured to that extent.
The sisters aren’t even mentioned even though they should be older and more experienced and able to help and that just reminds me so much of how the brothers are always the favorite in misogynistic households.
It’s such a common thing irl that I shouldn’t be surprised that Brandon made it in his story but you’d think he’d do it with literally anything except a Fairy based ruler because fairies don’t even have guys.

Time for more Gorgeous Artwork and an AU
I commissioned @fairykam to make some art for me from her beautiful hands. The idea? Bracken and Kendra as Aragorn and Arwen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, first off, I WANNA SCREAM AT HOW BEAUTIFUL THESE ARE.
*I’m sure you hear this awful, high-pitched squealing somewhere off in the distance — that is me*
Now for the meta, shall we?!
First off, I’m going to list the traits of Aragorn and Arwen, then I’m going to compare those traits to Bracken and Kendra, and lastly I’m going to squeal some more about this art and hopefully wrap up this (inevitably) long post with something coherent which wraps all of this together, and yes I’m going to color coordinate this stuff bc hello visuals:
Aragorn
Brave Leader
Compassionate
Huge destiny which he is at times hesitant about (ok often not just sometimes), but he eventually comes into his own
Humble
Probably running from his past
Swordsman, archer, sings, speaks Elvish... the man possesses hidden talents
Protective of anyone in his care, especially those who cannot defend themselves
Mortal, although his bloodline was “infected” by Magic so he had a prolonged (but still mortal) life
Excellent motivational speaker (lolol)
Willing to die for The Cause, but sure as hell will go down fighting
“Seems like a fighter but is actually soft”
Takes losses hard. He genuinely cares about the people around him.
Perpetually Exhausted
Arwen
Strong with the Magic™️ (did you SEE her drive back like all 9 friggin ringwraiths after beating them in a horse race?!?!?)
Compassionate
Loving
Open-hearted
Stands up for what she believes in
Immortal
Willing to trade her immortality in order to remain with her love
Fiercely loyal
Makes her own decisions, tyvm
FeIsTy
Strong of Character
Daughter of a man (elf) who is a recognized leader and was also tainted by darkness but rejected it (btw Elrond is honored by the other elves, and he lives with them and loves them, but he just... doesn’t quite seem to fit in with the others the way he did before the first war with Sauron)
Perpetually beautiful (she’s an elf; she can’t help it)
“Seems soft but is actually a fighter”
Will Not Tolerate Your BS
Now let’s assign the above traits to Bracken and Kendra (ahh, we see how the color coordination helps!):
Bracken
Brave Leader
Compassionate
Probably running from his past
Swordsman, probably an archer, sings, can use magic, speaks the secret fairy language & probably many others... the man possesses hidden talents
Protective of anyone in his care, especially those who cannot defend themselves
Excellent motivational speaker (lolol)
Willing to die for The Cause, but sure as hell will go down fighting
“Seems like a fighter but is actually soft”
Stands up for what he believes in
Immortal
Makes his own decisions, tyvm
Son of a man (unicorn) who is a recognized leader and was also tainted by darkness but rejected it (btw the Fairy King is honored by the other citizens of the fairy realm, and he lives with them and loves them, but he just... doesn’t quite seem to fit in with the others the way he did before he was captured by Gorgrog)
Perpetually beautiful (he’s a unicorn; he can’t help it)
Will Not Tolerate Your BS
Kendra
Compassionate
Huge destiny which she is at times hesitant about (maybe more than just sometimes), but she eventually comes into her own - hello, Dragonwatch 3? YAS QUEEN
Humble
Mortal, although she’s been “infected” by Magic so who really knows how long she’s going to live??
Takes losses hard. She genuinely cares about the people around her.
Perpetually Exhausted
Strong with the Magic™️ (seriously, have you READ Dragonwatch 3?!?!?)
Loving
Open-hearted
Stands up for what she believes in
Fiercely loyal
FeIsTy
Strong of Character
“Seems soft but is actually a fighter”
Will Not Tolerate Your BS
As you can see, Bracken and Kendra are a very good mix of both Aragorn and Arwen, with some particularly striking similarities. IMO, Aragorn/Arwen is aged-up Brackendra.
NOW TO THE ART!
I couldn’t decide whether Bracken or Kendra should be Aragorn or Arwen, because they’re both a pretty good mixture of each character, hence why I commissioned two pieces.
One of Bracken in Arwen’s role, with Kendra in Aragorn’s role:
Tumblr media
(Pictured: Bracken giving Kendra his horn, like when Arwen gave Aragorn her necklace)
And one of Kendra in Arwen’s role, with Bracken in Aragorn’s role:
Tumblr media
(Pictured: Bracken reassuring Kendra that she’s Got This, with Kendra on horseback about to race an injured Warren of course to safety. I love the confidence on her face - just like Arwen! Also, if you don’t know which scene this is from, it’s when Arwen had an injured Frodo on horseback, about to race the entire Ringwraith crew to safety. Spoiler alert: she won. Spectacularly.)
To sum up: Bracken and Kendra are foils of Aragorn and Arwen.
Also, this last point remains to be seen, but I have a feeling it may happen eventually...
Willing to trade his immortality in order to remain with his love

1 Day Til Cottage Cheese
Day 15: The Final Day
Theme: Legacy
Description: (heroes may fall but) Legends Never Die
QUICK NOTE: I just want to thank every single person who liked or commented on any of the days, you guys gave me motivation to finish this challenge. Of course I will continue posting, just not on as much of a regular schedule. I have a few more ideas I want to flesh out, and a few ideas for longer fics. Also, I’m sure I’ll have a lot to write about after CotTG comes out. :)
---
Legacy. Stories passed through generations. Remembrance. People, heroes, long lost to the hands of time. Time, it wears them down. Wears down their stories. Soon people are claiming preposterous things, or denying their existence all together. The world may never know the truth. The world might never recognize all they did. But that doesn’t mean they are forgotten.
People pass on their stories. Their legacy continues through many more generations. They are never forgotten, never will be. Heroes may fall, but legends never die. And they are legends. Legends of another time. Another life. Saving the world so that others may live in it, unspoiled by the pillaging, rampaging, and burning.
---
---
---
In the middle of a magical preserve, filled with creatures and spectacular sights, a child sat on his stool. His mother sat across from him at the kitchen table. The boy looked up at his mother, eyes big and pleading.
“Please, mama,” He begged. “Tell me again.”
The mother simply smiled. She would happily tell him again, for she never grew tired of the stories.
“She was your great-great-great-grandmother,” She began, her voice soft. “He was your great-great-great-granduncle.”
The child bounced up and down eagerly. He too never grew weary of the stories, passed down through the generations.
The mother continued. “Together, with their friends and family, they defeated both the demons and the dragons, when they tried to break free of their prisons.”
He listened intently, soaking up all of his mother’s words.
“Kendra and Seth Sorenson,” The mother sighed. “They were true heroes.”
---
---
---
A young girl, no older than fifteen, stood before the Singing Sisters, trying to appear confident. She put her hands on her hips and stared at them, not letting her fear show as she awaited their verdict.
What she did not expect was for one of them- Orna, she was pretty sure- to sigh longingly.
“This is it, isn’t it?” She addressed her sisters. They nodded their agreement, silently. The girl was taken aback. Since when did they all agree with each other?
“This is what?” She asked hesitantly, fearing the answer.
Orna regarded her. “You’re him.”
“Just like him,” One of the others murmured.
The girl didn’t know what that meant. “Just like who?” She pressed.
“Seth, Seth Sorenson. He came through here many years ago, a carbon copy of his ancestor, Patton Burgess. And now you. You carry on the legacy.”
The girl spluttered. “Are you crazy? Seth Sorenson? He was the greatest adventurer there ever was! I’ve heard so much about him! I’m not like him at all, he was so much better than me, I could never hope to measure up!”
Orna almost smiled. “Oh, trust me on this one.”
---
---
---
The prospect of a new handmaiden hadn’t even crossed the Fairy Queen’s mind. It had been many ages, centuries, since Kendra Sorenson. A blink of an eye in the life of an immortal being. But things still felt heavy. The Fairy Queen had grown to love Kendra as one of her own people. And occasionally someone said something or did something that reminded the Fairy Queen of her brave handmaiden.
That was why becoming Fairykind was so rare. Once she found someone worthy, she inevitably grew closer to them, until she found she actually cared. She wished she could’ve helped her more. Prolonged her life. But that would’ve been selfish. She knew Kendra wanted to grow old and eventually die with her family, rather than see them wither away whilst she remain youthful.
But even as much as the queen mourned her, she knew her son was in even more pain. Bracken hadn’t handled it well. It had been a long time since he loved anyone, and when he finally found peace, she had been torn away from him. The Fairy Queen knew firsthand what it felt like to have a partner die.
Only in Bracken’s case, she was never coming back.
He had confined himself to a room, barely eating and barely sleeping. He spent his waking moments on the verge of tears. The Fairy Queen had had to stop him from destroying his wall- it was full of pictures, memories captured. Her smile, her laugh. Their love for each other. The queen tried to convince him that they were mementos, precious, to be treasured. He had shakily replied that all they were were reminders of what used to be.
She wanted to help him, she really did. She just didn’t know how. Kendra would’ve known. Kendra always knew the exact thing he needed when he felt upset. But Kendra would never be there to help him, ever again.
---
---
---
The history books might never acknowledge their lives. Most people may never know their names. But they will never, never, be forgotten. Their stories are passed down, and their legacy survives. It survives in the stories, it survives in their children, and their children, and their children. Not children of heroes, children of legends.
Heroes may rise, and heroes may fall, but legends will never die.

Brackendra's  Children  Headcanons
-If Bracken and Kendra's kids want something they always go to Bracken. He can't help but say yes to there adorable little puppy dog eyes. When they beg in those small voices and look up with those bright eyes, he just can't bring himself to say no. Because in reality, he has witnessed just how short life can be. And they are only kids once so he's going to makes sure he does what he can to make them happy, while happiness is still simple.
-Seth is always bringing their kids little gifts and tokens from his adventures. One time he brought a little dog stuffed animal for their son and he carried it around with him EVERYWHERE. As they grow older it turns to emergency kits, potions , and weapons to keep them alive.
-their kids definitely inherit Kendra's love for cuddles. Bracken can't count the number of times that he has come home to find a cuddle like full.if his favorite people.
-Storytime is a time to look forward to in their house. One time there daughter even tried to go to bed at four in the afternoon just so they could have storytime. Kendra and Bracken both tell elaborate stories of characters in lands far away. However what makes these stories so special are the bits of truth tied into them. If you are to ask their children what their favorite story is, the answer will always be the many tales of how the  Fairy Princess saves the Unicorn Prince.
-Kendra had been really worried about how the fairies would treat their child because of the way they treated her. She worried that they would resent them. However these worried could not be farther from the truth. The fairies absolutely ADORE the child. They love to watch her play and explore the world they know. All of them are determined to protect the child from anything that may seek to harm them. The same goes for the Astrids, one look from those sparkling eyes melts there hard exterior. Bracken has caught both parties in several occasions doing that they would never normally do strictly to entertain the giggling child they had come to adore.
-When she was pregnant and after she had her children, Kendra found herself forming an even closer relationship with the Fairy Queen. Out of all of her family the Fairy Queen  was the one that had taught her the most about being a mother and raising her children. The Fairy Queen was ecstatic to hear that she was going to be a grandmother and immediately took it in stride. Making sure everything was taken care of and ready. It was also during this time that Kendra witnessed firsthand where Bracken got his overprotective nature from. Even though Kendra's case was the first of its kind, She was determined that everything was going to go perfectly smooth.
*I don't know where these came from. Sorry.🤷*

Here is the synopsis of Dragonwatch 3: Master of the Phantom Isle from goodreads
In the third book in the Dragonwatch series, Kendra leaves the timberland dragon sanctuary of Wyrmroost and travels to the other side of the world to a new and aquatic dragon preserve that teeters on the brink of being overthrown in the ongoing global dragon uprising.
The dragons have formally declared war on anyone who stands in their way of freedom and unrestrained power. With every dragon sanctuary that falls, Celebrant, the Dragon King, comes closer to his goal of world domination. No single mortal or creature can stop Celebrant. Kendra will need to raise an army of friends and allies to accomplish her mission to thwart Celebrant because her brother Seth and her closest ally, Bracken, are missing.
Cursed by the Key of Forgetting, Seth’s memories of his past—his relationships, experiences, and who he really is—are gone. For now he will align with his new mentor, Ronodin, the Dark Unicorn, who brings him to the Phantom Isle, the secret gateway to the Underworld. Though not formally a prisoner, Seth is heavily influenced by Ronodin, who wants to use him and his special Shadow Charmer powers for his own dark ends.
Seth and Kendra have braved the Fairy Queen, battled the Demon King, and survived the Dragon King during the dragon uprising. Now alone, Seth will face a new dark foe: the Underking —the ruler of the “undead”: the zombies, skeletons, and restless wraiths who tirelessly serve their dark master. He will find himself in bondage to the Underking and obligated to complete nefarious tasks for him.
Also on the Phantom Isle, but imprisoned, is Bracken, who claims to be a unicorn, the son of the Fairy Queen, and a former friend of Seth. Bracken and Kendra try to remind Seth about his past, but, unable to access his memories, he isn’t sure who to believe. For now, he will use his newly discovered magical abilities, which could be a game changer in helping Ronodin create chaos.
In this new fantasy adventure, Dragonwatch: Master of the Phantom Isle, readers travel to a ghost island, a mermaid city, and a dangerous archipelago as they meet new fantastical characters and get reintroduced to old friends from Fablehaven. As power shifts back and forth from the forces of light and dark, who will gain the ultimate advantage to win the epic dragon war?

i don't have a copy of fablehaven in english, but in fifth book bracken says to kendra "my mother haven't always approved my girlfriends, but she adores you" or something like that. does it mean that bracken had some spooky girls in his rebel phase? were there some mortal girls? is it possible that bracken had to watch his beloveds die of old age? or did he just step away?(im writing a fanfic about fablehaven's world in medieval times, and it touches that subject a little bit)
So in the English book it says, “’I haven’t been drawn to a girl in a long time. ... Against all odds, this time, my mother actually approves!” So I get the feeling that the Fairy Queen hasn’t liked ANY of the girls he’s liked before, but some of them were probably mortal, or at least that doesn’t matter so much to them.
I would die for Bracken to have a rebel phase! He already sounds pretty rebellious what with giving his horn up, and “I’m going to go see what’s up with this shrine even though my mom told me not to.” Like if him and Ronodin were super close and all unicorn punk, trying to flirt with wraiths.
Then again, any rebelliousness probably wasn’t that crazy or anything. I would definitely say he’s liked at least one mortal girl before though, otherwise he probably wouldn’t bother too much acting on his feelings with Kendra since she’s going to die anyway. It would also lend weight to why the FQ’s approval was “against all odds” even though we know she adores Kendra so much. She probably has super high standards for whomever Bracken is interested in because he’s her only son, and after her husband “died” he took on the role of her closest confidant. She wouldn’t want him going for someone who’s going to leave in a couple of decades.

According to Goodreads, I read 106 books in 2016, which is a lot. Instead of having you scroll endlessly through my Goodreads to find my reviews, I thought I would make a nice little wrap-up post of my favorites and recommendations.
NOT PICTURED (because I only own in ebook format thus far): Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys, and the Jem and the Holograms graphic novels by Kelly Thompson.
More on these titles and why I chose them below the cut!
An Ember in the Ashes and A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir:
The first two books in what will be a four book series written by former Washington Post author and editor (who is here on tumblr @sabaatahir!). These books are exceptionally good, featuring a diverse cast with a good amount of social commentary and good world building. The first book (Ember) focuses on Laia, a girl who goes undercover as a slave in a prestigious military academy as part of a deal to free her brother from prison. There she meets Elias, a specialized soldier known as a mask, who happens to be the son of the very woman Laia was sent to spy on, and who wants nothing more than to be out of the school and free of the Martial empire. I can’t say much more without giving anything away, but these books pulled me in and had me absolutely captivated from page one and I cannot wait for the rest of the series:
Some things to be aware of: Yes, slavery is a theme in this book, but it is never glorified or romanticized. Rape is mentioned and threatened, but never occurs or is used as a plot device, and is presented in only an absolutely negative light. There is a lot of violence in this series, and it gets a tad graphic at times, so be careful of that. This series falls victim to a few common YA tropes (the “chosen one” and a love triangle or two) but I personally found they didn’t detract from the story too much.
A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab:
Let me start by saying that this is hands-down the best series I have read in a long time and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The books follow Kell, a magician with the power to travel through worlds using his blood, who gets himself into a bit of a bind through his love of smuggling artifacts from other worlds into his own, and Delilah, a skilled thief who dresses as a man to avoid detection, and who happens to steal a dangerous artifact from Kell when she meets him in the street one night. nearly destroying his world and draining hers of the little power it has left. This series has the most interesting characters I have encountered in a long time, with amazing personalities, and great representation all across the board (disability, sexuality, and race all represented well and in a positive light). And with the release of A Conjuring of Light in February, the series is blissfully complete! No months of waiting for the next book, not that you’ll be in any hurry for the series to end. Author on Tumblr as @veschwab.
Things to be aware of: Seeing as the series deals with blood magic, there is a fair amount of violence and bloodshed.
Passenger by Alexandra Bracken:
I never thought I’d be into a book about time-travel, but this one proved me dead wrong. This book reads like historical fiction mixed with modern young adult romance. Henrietta Spencer is a talented violinist, who hopes to make her professional debut soon, but her plans get derailed when she is literally thrust into the past and soon finds herself in a race to find a valuable artifact hidden by her mother somewhere in the past before her mother is killed by the family seeking it. On her adventures she meets Nicholas, a freed slave turned privateer who has just narrowly escaped the clutches of the same family holding Etta’s mother hostage. He makes a deal with the family to accompany Etta and bring the artifact to them in exchange for a share of their fortune and the promise of his true freedom, but will he be able to keep his promise when he starts to fall for his travelling companion?
Things to be aware of: Slavery and racism are definitely themes in this one, but both are handled delicately and not glorified or celebrated. One of the few interracial pairings I’ve seen in YA and it was done amazingly well. Book 2, Wayfarer introduces some more characters with diverse backgrounds and sexualities, so this series gets good marks for diversity.
Salt to the Sea and Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys:
Two excellent historical fiction books set during World War II. I listed them together because not only do they have overlapping timelines, but they also have related characters. Between Shades of Gray focuses on a young girl and her family who were rounded up and sent to various labor camps because of their anti-Stalin stance, while Salt to the Sea follows the journeys of four young men and women who ended up on the doomed Wilhelm Gustloff, a massive ship that went down in the Baltic Sea on January 30th 1945 while attempting to evacuate German citizens, refugees from other war-torn areas, Nazi officials, and military personnel.
Things to be aware of: There is an instance of rape in Salt to the Sea, and one of the characters in Salt to the Sea subscribes to Nazi rhetoric, however neither are romanticized and both are shown in an incredibly negative light.
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson:
A wonderful graphic novel which collects and updates the pages of the webcomic of the same name. The story here is complex, dark at times, funny at others, and utterly satisfying to read.
Illuminae and Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff:
Two extremely good young adult sci-fi novels, told in one of the most unique formats I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Rather than being told in prose, the events of these novels unfold through a series of confiscated emails, chats, interview transcripts, and detailed descriptions of surveillance videos. The events of these books kick off when a major corporation launches an attack on a small planet which is home to an illegal mining operation by their rivals. Thousands are killed, but a few ships manage to escape with refugees, including Kady Grant and Ezra Mason, two teenagers who just happened to break up hours before the attack and now find themselves on the run from a destroyer intent on blowing up their escaping fleet to ensure that word of the attack never reaches the light of day. The first book, Illuminae, contains the only plot twist that has ever made me scream out loud, and Gemina continues the story by bringing in two new teenage characters to kick ass and take names.
Things to be aware of: One co-author; Jay Kristoff, has come under fire for serious butchering and appropriation of Japanese culture and language in another series he has written. While I myself did not notice anything of the sort in Illuminae or Gemina, as a white woman, I wholly admit that I am not the best judge of such things and can understand why some people may not wish to read anything he is involved with. As for warnings applying to these books specifically: there’s some violence and gore in both and some drug use and organized crime in Gemina that some may want to avoid.
Heartless by Marissa Meyer:
A wonderful fairytale spin-off that tells the tale of how the Queen of Hearts became the way she is, and how she got her instantly recognizable catchphrase. This was one of those rare books that I simply could not tear myself away from. I read the entire thing in just over 24 hours and have not stopped thinking about it since. If you like fairy tale retellings, give this one a read.
The Valor Anthology:
This collection of comics and short stories all feature fearless women stepping up and being their own knights in shining armor. Brought to life on Kickstarter and featuring numerous Tumblr artists and content creators, this book is a treasure trove of badass heroines, LGBT representation, and characters of diverse backgrounds and cultures. I love how many of the stories draw on folklore and mythology from around the world, and how many are completely original as well. The anthology can be purchased here. The ebook option is just $5!
Jem and The Holograms Comics/Graphic Novels:
If ever there was a perfect example of rebooting something and making it modern while still keeping the charm of the original, this is it. Kelly Thompson and Jen Bartel took our favorite pastel and punk ladies and brought them into today’s day and age with more diversity than you can shake a stick at. This comic series has so many different body types, cultures, and sexualities represented that I don’t even know where to begin. Just read it! Need more convincing? Digital editions are on sale up to half-off through Comixology until 3/20/2017!

Based on your last post about how Bracken is the treasured son I can’t help but wonder what Bracken’s older sisters think about all this. I am immediately wondering if any or all of them become traitors to their mother. They are all traitors in different ways. One wants the crown for herself. One aids demons/ The Underking. Another is part of a conspiracy to allow a fairy to take the crown back. This series is making me think that everyone will eventually be a traitor. Library.
Oms that would be so interesting.
Just, bracken is the favored son and it grates on the others until they end up betraying the queen but none of them know the others are traitors and all traitors in different ways and it’s absolutely wild because half the time their betrayals cancel each other out.
They’ve almost ended the fairy realm a few dozen times except the army of demons coming in got defeated by the true fairies that were invited in who were then too weakened to challenge the queen so had to leave and the one trying to take the crown got foiled by the demons attacking and it’s a disaster.
