It absolutely sets my teeth on edge when gringos refer to Carnaval as "Carnival".
It's not a carnival, it's one of the holidays in my culture (which has nothing to do with carnivals), and it has a name.
You don't get to make up another name for it because you feel like it.

I saw someone mentioning a similar experience on Twitter recently and it got me wondering if it's a common phenomenon or just a coincidence...
Do people in fandom from non English speaking countries also find themselves unable to read fic in their native language after you start reading in English?
I started out reading fic in a Brazilian and Portuguese forum when I was 13 and later on FF.net but it's been over a decade since I just stopped entirely. The only Brazilian fic I still follow is a decades old lotr story with over 100 chapters that gets updated once in a blue moon.
Not sure if it was because I mostly liked reading Gen fic when I was younger and Br fandom just liked ships too much, or because I started getting into fandoms that weren't as popular in here, but it felt like fic in Portuguese just wasn't as interesting after a while and then I stopped. Maybe because the history of fandom is just different, and resulted in different tropes and culture among fic writers? Or maybe because there's just more fic in English? I don't know...
Anyway just thinking about this today

An aspect of Hilda the series that I feel isn’t talked about enough is the colonizer’s guilt and how it affects the main character.
What made me write this was watching the third episode of the new season, but honestly, it’s something we see throughout the whole series. Starting out with the elves in the northern counties, and moving on to trolls and now giants. Every season that came out gave us a chance to see Hilda deal with the feelings that arise from living in a society she knows is built on the occupation of another people’s native land and the oppression of those inhabitants.
She knows it’s not her fault, she knows she’s not the colonizer, but she’s well aware that she’s in the privileged side of her society. Seeing her grapple with the fact that her very existence in these spaces is only possible because someone else is getting the short end of the stick, to me at least, makes her that much more interesting of a character.
Because it’s not a matter of fixing what she’s done, but the privilege is still there and not even well hidden when she sees the day to day life of the people whose land has been occupied by humans/trolbergians. So whenever we see her rush to aid them, her borderline desperation to fix what’s been broken, it’s even more captivating because it’s not just the usual “I love helping people and having adventures” gist, there’s always this undertone of guilt for something she hasn’t personally done but still knows has to be held accountable for.
Hilda knows the type of oppression that people like her get away with. And she wants no part in it.

no i sent that because right wingers (esp the agro crowd in brazil) like to repeat that vegan products contribute to it as if that was all there was to it, which unfortunately actually has people thinking soy crops are meant for vegan products (have had to argue with multiple people irl about this - it's somehow not that obvious to everyone as you might think) so i think it's important to shed light on what actually matters. vegan products are not the root of the problem so pointing out they contribute to it does not help solve the problem so much. however if people are vegan for environmental reasons i agree it's coherent to seek out products produced locally etc (i assume that's why you mentioned that then?)
i did not mean that ask to attack you in any way tho just thought it's worth pointing out.
i understand where youre coming from but i am not a right winger agro person and neither is anyone that follows me on here, i don't know what would make you assume otherwise. you are pretty much preaching to the choir. the fact of the matter stands that you'd be doing much more to help the environment by donating to environmentalist and food security orgs in brazil with your dollars than by choosing grocery chain international vegan products over, say, local farmer's market meat. (yes, that is why i mentioned it)

hm the thing north americans should understand when non english speakers complain about websites or the internet in general being very usamerican is that like. its like that everywhere online. everything is for you... its all built with you as the default in mind ... every other nationality has to carve in a little.community for themselves but theres not any website online thats like. for south americans. or for koreans. or for mexicans. etc like you get the idea. there are only communities within default US websites. that gets frustrating when youre not usamerican

There are 3 types of gringos:
The ones who consider Brazilians Latino but only because they think we speak Spanish
The ones who know we speak Portuguese but think we aren't Latino because we don't speak Spanish
The ones who know Brazilians are Latinos who speak Portuguese... because their Brazilian friends have rambled and ranted about it until the information sunk in

just showed the first small draft of my br regency story to my teacher and he said: “well i think you need to reforce how problematic slavery is more often”. hello???? one would think the reader knows that slavery and sexism and racism and ableism are bad without the author having to tell them again and again! omg

Translation: Mick about the problems with his motor he faced during the Sprint Race
Mick: "Yeah, a good first lap which definitely helped us, and yeah after that I got difficulties with the motor pretty quickly, at least for me it seemed like there was something not right with the engine. So we had a lot of communication between the team and (I) had to change a lot on (the set up of) the steering wheel which does not exactly help the course of the race. In the end we still did a good job. We have been faster than Lance in front and I think Daniel as well, so two more positions forward would have been possible and if everything would've gone right probably even more. So quite happy with the day today."
I: "But do have to be worried for tomorrow regarding the engine?"
Mick: "We will find that out this evening."
