I’m Going to Talk About Justice League Dark

Hello there, Internet, I’m Mr. BreaksIt, and I’ve had this sudden urge to spend the next few paragraphs rambling about a movie. It’s not a movie I particularly liked, nor one I particularly hated, although I’m certainly leaning a bit more towards the latter. It’s not even a movie that I think handled a particular issue brilliantly or terribly, although it does have its issues from a feminist point of view. To be frank, it’s an unremarkably bad movie that’s notable only for giving me an excuse to be pretentious and chatter about a subject that I am far from an expert in.

Justice League Dark is the latest of the DC Animated Movies, which are certainly a mixed bag these days. It focuses on a small group of popular comics characters with a supporting cast of lesser-known fair and a tagalong Batman who spends the movie doing very little but add star power. This is all fairly standard so far, and come to think of it, that phrase could be used to describe the movie in general. The whole thing reeks of committee design, to the point where I can’t really consider there to be a “creative process” involved.

That line probably sounds like it comes from an amateur reviewer here or on Youtube, but let me try to explain what I mean. Right in the beginning of the movie, John Constantine is playing poker with the Demons Three and tries to raise after going all-in. The Demons assume they know what’s coming next and declare that Constantine’s soul isn’t worth two bits. 5 minutes and a fight scene later, two of the Demons are rolling around screaming about how Constantine’s soul will soon be theirs!  The movie is filled with moments like that, with Constantine and Zatanna (of all people) constantly mixing up which one of them is supposed to be the shiny paragon and which is supposed to be the selfish loner and the like. It all plays out like the writers were filling out a checklist of “things that happen in a superhero movie” without any real thought to why those things happen, meaning characters are left totally blank.

There’s a scene at the end where Doctor Destiny taunts Swamp Thing for “secretly wanting to be human again” but that’s a character trait that’s never even suggested to the audience beforehand. There’s a scene where Zatanna loses control of her powers for no adequately explained reason and is shut down by John Constantine who claims the same thing’s happened to him before, but in every fight in the movie, he remains perfectly cool, calm and collected. Batman goes from not believing magic is involved in the crime wave that sets off the plot, to just going with it, to suddenly deciding magic is rubbish for one, single line in the middle of the movie before going back to standing in the background for the rest of the show.

The point is, this is a movie that doesn’t seem to realise it has characters, simply seeing them as vehicles for the plot, scant as it is, and doesn’t even give them consistent roles to fill. Constantine is either annoyed at having to come along, a righteous crusader, or an enthusiastic trickster depending on the needs of the scene. The same goes for Jason Blood, Doctor Destiny, Zatanna, Deadman and Batman. Even Orchid and Swamp Thing get in on the fun, and they’re barely in the movie.

This was all a bit of stream of conscious here, so I don’t have a lesson prepared for anyone who reads this to take away, but if you forced my hand, the only thing I could suggest would be, well, basic consistency for one thing, but apart from that it would be that genre conventions exist for a reason and don’t work when divorced from that reason. You don’t need a red herring when there’s no mystery, so don’t put one in. Every element of a story exists to serve the story, and it shouldn’t be bent out of shape to accommodate an element that doesn’t need to exist in it.
