8th December 1987: The Scottish Land Court ordered the English owner of the Hebridean Island of Soay to sell more than half the island to a crofter who had lived there for more than 41 years.
Born in 1919, Joseph "Tex" Geddes - typically, he claimed he was given his nickname by a Red Indian fellow commando.
By his own account, he was born in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, and taken to Canada by his father when he was two, following a trivial altercation with the police. Others maintain he was raised by an aunt, the youngest of three fighting brothers, in Easter Ross, and never went to Canada in his life. His neighbours in nearby Skye believed that he hailed from Australia.
In the book Hebridean Sharker Tex Geddes describes his exploits during the 1950s as a hunter of basking sharks in the waters of the Minch, between the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Using an adapted whaling harpoon, he and his crew stalked these huge fish often in perilous conditions, the liver of which is a valuable source of oil.
Always a maverick, before World War Two Geddes had been a boxer and a rumrunner to Newfoundland. During the war he established a reputation as an expert knife-thrower and bayonet fencer and served in the Special Forces with fellow hebridean Gavin Maxwell (author of Ring of Bright Water), and was a central character in Maxwell's Harpoon at a Venture
He combined the hazardous pursuit of sharks with crewing the local lifeboat, ring-net fishing, lobstering, deer-stalking and salmon poaching.
Thesubject of previous posts, historian of Gaelic culture Margaret Fay Shaw said of him: "Tex was a great storyteller and important as such. He was also immensely kind, and had that hunger for life and fun that is essential if you are to make a go of living in these islands. The Hebrides needs more people like Tex Geddes. So does the world
He went on to purchase the tiny island of Soay, where he lived with his wife Jeanne, Geddes continued fishing basking sharks, selling unprocessed livers rather than processed oil to Glasgow.While much of the remaining population of the island evacuated to Mull in 1953, Geddes and his family remained. Geddes protested at the lack of emergency telephone services and with the threat of loss of postal service to the remaining inhabitants of the island, he asked people to send him registered letters and packages. As a result the service was kept with post arriving once a month.
Today the island has a population of three, and the post arrives once a month. The population peaked at 158 in 1851, following eviction of crofters from Skye in the Clearances.

The installation was exhibited in an empty stepped hall. Various green plants are regularly placed in golden vases. At the same time, a piece of sacred music was playing. This made me feel the communi- cation and connection between plants, they are like a community, and even have their own culture. (p1)

This photographer photographed coins of the same denomination with varying degrees of wear. In these enlarged photos of coins, we can clearly see the traces of nature. It could be corrosion, it could be wear, it could be patina. This reminds methat when artificial objects are inter- vened by nature, their value may not be changed, or they may have high- er or lower value. Likewise, how are these values assessed?

The artist extracted the texture of the tree in the photography and printed it on the glass through UV White Print, creating a double visual effect. The tex- ture expressed by the printing of mod- ern technology replaces the original texture of the tree. This kind of conflict between technology and nature makes me very interesting

The artist acquired a wsteland in Bel- gium on top of a former coal mine. Find fossils of a carboniferous forest on the land, it triggered ideas of a deep time, beyond private property.
The artist draws a series of fossil pat- terns through the coal in the site. I am fascinated by this way of recording and creating through the materials of thesubjects the research.

It is a lot of work to prepare for properly, plane tickets,hotel accommodations, car rentals, clothes to pack, pets to wholesale Bike Trainers take care of,making sure the other family members and friends can contact you in anemergency etc. But one of the items sometimes left to last, is photographyequipment to record your vacation. Do you want to take along a lot of equipment,still cameras and lenses, accessories, plus the video camera to record all theaction on your trip.When taking a vacation, mostpeople will take a still digital camera or a video camera. Some will take both,and do their best to contend with the hassle of switching between cameras.
Somescenes are better suited to being photographed with a video camera, obviouslyas with things that are moving, ,such as a parade or at the races, while othersare better suited to a still camera, such as landscapes and cityscapes. Using the two differenttypes of cameras does require a different technique to get the most out of thecamera. For instance, when shooting with a video camera, all the experts willtell you that the best method to make sure that the video you shoot is asexciting as when you took the video, is to take a series of short clips, ratherthan one long boring clip. Video needs to be interesting, and we humans getbored very quickly, so make your videos short and to the point. On the other hand, takingphotos with a digital still camera offers you the opportunity to take a littlemore time to think about the composition and framing of the image, and the timeof day you take the photo. Digital still cameras also offer a much higherresolution so you can make enlargements that you can hang on the wall for allto see.
The digital DSLR is a very versatile system. If you are not fully awareof the benefits of a DSLR let me do a quick summary. The first, and somebelieve the most important feature, is that you look through the viewfinder andyou see exactly what the camera sees. In other words, the light from thesubject enters the lens of the camera, and this is the image you see. At themoment of the exposure, when you take the photo, the camera re-directs thisimage onto the digital sensor, and captures the image. In normal daylight, thishappens so quickly, it is barely noticeable. In dim light conditions, you willnot be able to see through the camera until the exposure is finished. With thenew generation of cameras, they employ a system called live view, where theimage you are photographing is shown on the rear LCD screen. So you can composeand see the image as you take the photo.Now, in the old days, and Iam talking about a few months ago (things happen so fast in this digital age),you had to compromise on taking a video or a still camera or both on yourvacation. But today, you have a new choice. The major still DSLR cameramanufacturers are now combining the best of both worlds into the one camerabody. Now you can take high resolution still photos, and HD quality video withsound, on the newest range of DSLR cameras. This is exciting news, as now youreally do have the best of both worlds, a HD video camera and a high resolutiondigital still camera, all in one unit.
