Paris FC - Lyon Postgame Interviews
TL:dr version: Renard is probably the most pissed off I've seen her, and this after they won the game.
@OL Comms Dept: PLEASE pay for a grande Pumpkin Spice Latte (soy, whipped cream), I'll do anything!!! I deserve it for translating a postgame interview this long!!!
Blah blah standard disclaimers apply. Going to turn this into a Timothee Piron fan account one way or another.
Also blah blah Lyon bias whatever. Renard > other captains. A proper captain holds you accountable both in the locker room and publicly.
WENDIE RENARD INTERVIEW
Journalist: A huge congratulations to our captain, Wendie Renard. Captain Wendie, this win is beautiful, isn't it? I think it will do a lot of good both in terms of ranking and mentally. It's a really important win today for Lyon.
Renard: Yeah, we knew it was going to be difficult. It's always complicated against Paris FC. We saw that again this afternoon. It'll do us some good, but congratulations to everybody. It wasn't easy. We hung in there and managed to win. That's cool.
Journalist: Wendie, I don't know if you realized it in the heat of the moment, but we begin the second half, it's 1-1. Clara Mateo takes a shot, you clear, deflect, and take the pace off the ball, and Mathilde Bourdieu scores the second goal. She's offside by one meter. Is that the turning point in the game for you? You're down 1-2 against the run of play. But you found the mental strength and technical abilities to come back and impose yourselves.
Renard: Yeah, I think we conceded that second goal at the worse of times. And yeah, I was aware of the situation, I lived it. Unfortunately I took pace off the ball, and it put Mathilde [Boudieu] in a good position to score. But after that we saw this Paris FC team say to themselves, "okay, we've got this, we need to keep the score." And they started to time waste for throw-ins, the goalkeeper as well, she went to pick up balls even though there are ball boys for that. So we said to ourselves we need to stay calm, keep our emotions in check. And then I think, unfortunately for their goalkeeper, she made a mistake with touching the ball, I managed .. I managed to score by the skin of my teeth. But I think that goal did some good. And we had the resources to go get that third [goal].
Journalist: Wendie, a lot of followers of women's football, whether it's in the French league or the Champions League, have a tendency to want to bury Olympique Lyonnais. "Oh, that's it, they're not what they once were". Other teams are getting ahead. But we saw a lot of character. You won at Zurich three days ago, you were behind in the rankings. We feel there's a mentality [now], there's actually a style of play. We feel there are still a lot of elements that will allow Lyon to stay ahead.
Renard: Well, it's not the Olympique Lyonnais from before in a lot of ways. But that's a topic for another day. But the players who wear this jersey give the best versions of themselves to live up to the jersey and the history [of the club]. That being said, each game reveals its own truths. Today it's like that. We're not going to settle, because we can't forget the number of injured players we have. But despite all that we're still here, we manage to play. It's true that there been some catastrophic games on our part, but that's part of a cycle. It's part of periods as well. This afternoon we showed a lot of - [Cayman walks past and whispers something to Renard] - we showed a lot of character, an irreproachable mental spirit. We really wanted it [the win], we knew it was important to win here.
Journalist: Wendie, I know you always put the group performance above an individual performance, but I still want to salute you today. We remember your rage when scoring the winning goal against Fleury at the Groupama OL Training Center [where Lyon plays their regular home games] in extra time. Today you scored a brace, your first brace in two years. That is also Olympique Lyonnais. This innate desire to win. We felt again that with everything you have experienced, it made a difference today.
Renard: Yeah, I mean, once again I was able to make the difference for the team. It's good for the team as a whole and for me personally. To go home with a win here [at Paris FC] is not the easiest. So we have to continue like this, have to continue to work. We still have several games [to play] before the winter break. So we have to continue to take things seriously.
Journalist: You brought it up, Wendie, we have experienced a pretty intense month of November. But what can we say about the calendar in December which can be decisive, whether it be in with the clash at home against Paris Saint-Germain, or three very important games in the UWCL. We're obviously thinking of the match against Zurich, but what to say about the away game against Arsenal or this final, for lack of a better word, at home against Juventus? This month of December has to count for something. It will be decisive for 2023, whether the year is off to a good start or not.
Renard: [nods] Well you summed it all up. I think it's important to finish well. Today, what's left is Dijon, Paris [Saint-Germain], Zurich, Arsenal and Juventus. Those are difficult matches. We saw it, it wasn't simple. In Champions League, the win against Zurich did us some good, even if we could have scored a lot more goals, be even more efficient. But that 3-0 win was good for us. And now we have a week to get ready for Dijon, recover as well, and prepare for Dijon. And after that, the marathon is still going on. We don't have a choice. As I said, we have to take it seriously, stay focused. Nothing is done yet. And if we want to [shakes head disapprovingly], if we want to play a lot of games in 2023, we have to put in a lot of effect together and individually.
Journalist: One more question, Wendie, and I will let you go. You said it really well. We saw you celebrate with the fans in the stadium after the game. In the month of December, you're going to play four games at home, three of which are the Groupama Stadium [men's stadium]. Do you have a message for the Lyon fans ahead of these important [home] games?
Renard: No. [pause] Just, come support us. It's an important month, December, before the winter break. We need you, I guess. I know it wasn't easy this afternoon. At times, we heard them [the Lyon fans]. I think they took it badly, just like we did, when we conceded the second goal. But they were behind us. [sounding unconvinced] So we're expecting a lot of fans at the Groupama Stadium to come and support us and be behind us until the winter break.
Journalist: Thank you, and congratulations once again.
Renard: Thank you.
BRUNO CHEYROU [LYON SPORTING DIRECTOR] INTERVIEW
Journalist: Bruno, thank you for being here tonight. A win, it's going to do a lot of good, both in terms of the ranking and mentally.
Cheyrou: No, it's true. We've been on a good streak for the past two, three weeks. And this win, we had to work for it, I think it will do us good in terms of confidence, be able to take on the upcoming weeks, with difficult matches, in a bit more of a serene manner. So you summed up the situation well.
Journalist: As you know, Bruno, a season is long. But certain games, certain moments, have more weight than others. Do you think personally we witnessed a turning point in the season for this team?
Cheyrou: A turning point, I don't know. We were on a positive streak despite everything. We're in line with our objectives, even if we've experienced some difficult moments. It's mainly a question of confidence. There were a lot of injuries, I'm not going to go over that again. I think what's important is that we have a team that can accomplish the goals we have set. In the [French] league, we're good. In the Champions League, we're going to try and do what's necessary to go get that qualification. Now we're entering into the "Money Time". So I'm not really talking about a turning point, more like continuity, such as the game against Zurich, where we're missing a little bit of confidence to be more efficient in front of goal. But now against one of the hardest opposition in the French league, we were able to react really well. I think that the determination and character shown - [feed freezes]
Journalist: Bruno, today we saw in the style of play a significant improvement. As you said, we've gone though some periods, some more successful than others. There were some very tight score lines, or simply lack of performances such as against EAG. We feel that now the style of play is better, and that will allow us to approach the month of December better. We're thinking particularly of playing at home against Paris Saint-Germain and these crucial matchups against Arsenal and Juventus.
Cheyrou: No, I think that's obvious. Physically, we are doing better. We're getting players back, who are returning to a very competitive level. There's Maro[zsan], who played her second game. There's Vicki Becho, Ines Benyahia, the two academy players showing a lot of promise, who showed they are capable of bringing something to the team. So that's good. It's good for us. And indeed in this final stretch for 2022 we will need everybody. And it's true that in terms of the style of play, it's better and better. It's not yet at the level we are capable of. But we're pretty much on the right track and on a positive dynamic. So we need to emphasize that. And yeah, they're a good group, there's the personality and character. Now obviously it's not as easy or as simple as previous years. It's true that at Lyon we were used to winning more easily, be more dominant, be more in control. But women's football as a whole is developing and is getting better. And I think it's good that it's more competitive. And we have to get more used to having to fight for a win. What matters at the end of the day is just winning.
Journalist: One last comment on the calendar for the month of December. It's quite daunting. What is your perspective on these upcoming games, which without talking about a turning point, will have a considerable importance in terms of 2023?
Cheyrou: No, it's obvious. There's Dijon, and after that Zurich, Paris [Saint-Germain], the two games against Arsenal and Juventus, which will be decisive. We need to get better physically, which is what we are seeing right now. We're recuperating a maximum amount of experienced players, and for important games, you're always going to need your best players. Those are all non-negotiable factors when you're preparing for the game. There's a degree of confidence. But I'll say it once again, I do think the match this evening, I think the personality and character shown - especially that of Wendie [Renard], who scored a brace, I know she was with out for a while. I think that summarizes the team quite well. "Never give up." And that's how we come together.
Journalist: Thank you, Bruno. And you're always welcome on OLPlay.
DELPHINE CASCARINO INTERVIEW
Journalist: We found Delphine [Cascarino]. Thank you for being here with us. We asked this question in the studio. When Paris FC scored the goal, several seconds after the second half had started. Matilde Bourdieu gives Paris FC the advantage despite having been offside. What was going through your mind when that happened?
Cascarino: Obviously that goal really, really hurt us at the start of the second half, because, well, we wanted to start aggressively, and our momentum was stopped in its tracks by that goal. But we didn't give up, we kept working at it, try to come up with a play that would allow us to score, to equalize first and then score to take the lead.
Journalist: Just between us, we considered this match as being the first big clash in the D1 Arkema for Lyon, against a team who up until now was undefeated. We saw there was some improvements in the Champions League game against Zurich. We have the feeling that the style of play is becoming more fluid, that the team is becoming more comfortable, the confidence is returning. Do you and the team feel the same way?
Cascarino: Yeah, it's true that we're feeling better and better. Despite the two goals conceded, we didn't give up. It's positive going forward. And it gives us confidence because it's true, it was the first big clash in the [French] league. So yeah, it's really good to have won tonight, and we're going to keep going like this.
Timothee: Delphine, good evening. It's interesting, because within a week you have the game against Zurich where you won because you were superior technically and physically, and today there was a slightly different version of Olympique lyonnais Feminin, a Lyon team that never gave up, who will fight until the last minute to get the win. The mentality was on display. And we saw a little bit of what makes Lyon, well, Lyon, the mentality that makes Lyon stand out year after year.
Cascarino: Yeah, it's true that we're not used to being behind. So that was really hard for us. But I guess it's good that it happens during the big games, because we showed a lot of character to have come back and scored that last goal. It shows we're here and will still be here until the end of the season.
Timothee: We could hear the celebrations, lots of screaming in the locker room. We heard the same against Zurich. Is it important to enter into December with these positive emotions? We know that since the beginning of the season, there hasn't exactly been only positive feelings. Getting in a positive mindset before this chaotic month of December, that must do you some good, I imagine.
Cascarino: Yeah, mentally it's good to enter into December having won those two games. We know it's not going to be easy, there are some big games ahead of us. So yeah. We're ready for these clashes, and we hope we're ready for it. In any case I am happy for the team tonight, because we showed a good style of play. It was a nice win. So I'm satisfied with the team.
Journalist: Delphine, for you personally, this was the third goal of the season in D1 Arkema. Maybe the most important one. Vicki Becho gave you a great ball, it was deep. And then you had a really nice early Christmas present [there was a mixup between the defender and goalkeeper which allowed Cascarino to go through on goal]. But you stayed diligent until the end.
Cascarino: Yeah, that's it. It was a good pass from Vicki [Becho]. She did great coming in [as a sub], she gave me a great ball. I could feel it, I put pressure on the defender and I could sense there would be a miscommunication. That pressure meant that they gave me the ball and all that was left for me to do was put the ball at the back of the net. It was really good for us, for the team.
Journalist: One last question, Delphine. You've experienced quite a rich, quite a dense, 2022. We're thinking obviously of the titles won with Lyon last season, a successful Euros campaign up to the semifinal, not much vacation time. Now we're in the final stretch and it's not exactly the easiest. It will quite a dense month of December with three enormous games, we're thinking of Paris Saint-Germain in D1 Arkema, and the major games against Arsenal and Juventus in the Champions League. A hell of a 2022 and it's not over yet.
Cascarino: Yeah, it's true that it was an emotional 2022, with a lot of games, a lot of wins. So we hope it will continue like that and we'll finish 2022 on a good note. That's the objective anyway so we can start off 2023 on the right foot.
Journalist: A big thank you, and a big congratulations. Get some rest, you'll need it for the month of December.
[Cascarino doesn't smile at the banter]
Cascarino: Thank you. Have a good evening.
SONIA BOMPASTOR INTERVIEW
Journalist: We're here with the coach, the one who probably has the more Lyon DNA in her than anyone else. Sonia Bompastor, thank you for being here with us. The first question is simple. How are you feeling after this game?
Bompastor: Good evening to everybody. I'm really happy. This win was important, we said it to the team before the game. It was our third game in a week, with the last two being two away games. So we knew recovery was going to be the most important thing. And we knew that opposite us was a really good Paris FC team, who has ambitions every season. An attacking team capable of making things difficult for us, with the three attacking players and Gaetane Thiney in the middle. So we had to go get the win with the mental aspect, which we were able to do because we have a team with a lot of character who doesn't give up. And with the style of play as well. And as such it was important. There were free kicks as well. It's true that we believed we could get the win until the end. And it's true that we're really pleased and satisfied with the result, but also with the manner [it happened].
Journalist: We talked about it in the pregame show, this clash between two undefeated teams, two teams with the best defense in D1 Arkema [shocked about Lyon not gonna lie]. I asked you about it, and you said no, it wasn't going to be a low-scoring game. You ended up being right. We feel as though this game and this result has all the necessary ingredients to give the team confidence going into the month of December.
Bompastor: Yeah, it's true that it's important to emphasize that. We're on a series of eight games until the end of the year, and we're at three wins out of three so far. So we're heading into December in the best way. Indeed, as I said in the pregame show, with the quality of attacking players on the field and also the playing philosophy of both coaches, I knew there would be space, I knew there would be a lot of chances created. And whichever team would be most efficient and diligent defensively would probably win it. So yeah, today, even though Paris FC gifted us that third goal, we were until the end - we believed until the end that we would be able to get a result. We put them under pressure to force them into making that mistake. So yeah, all the better for us. Though once again, Paris FC is a good team. They will cause problems for other teams in the league.
Timothee: And we hope, Sonia, that they will make life difficult for other teams really soon, maybe as soon as next week, that will make things easier for us [Timothee is referring to the PSG - Paris FC clash]. Within a week, we saw a condensed version of what Olympique lyonnais is. You're on top physically and technically in the game against Zurich, then there is this close win today which required a lot of mental strength. The two types of wins, two types of emotions at the end, it puts Lyon in the best conditions for December, no?
Bompastor: Yeah. Lately we've focused a lot of the state of mind, the ambitions and objectives we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season, on the expectations and demands that we all needed to have in order to accomplish these goals. So I think over the past few games we have showed an intriguing style of play, even if we didn't accomplish everything we wanted. There's still work left to be done, but in terms of willingness, of state of mind, there's a team who is focused on the job, a team that has the quality to meet these objectives and never gives up. So that's important, because at the top level, the state of mind is fundamental. And in context, that's two games now that we've scored three goals, so that gives us confidence individually and as a team. For the team dynamic in December, that's positive.
Timothee: And finally, what I was saying right now when we were in the studio, there is this consistency, this indisputable fact that Lyon, with their back against the wall, fights back when they have to. That's also reassuring with the upcoming games in December.
Bompastor: Yeah, in any case it shows that we have a very focused group. We have players who are real competitors and always show up no matter what. It's not always easy, because, I say this often, the players are in high demand. We talked about it before, they're playing a lot of games, we're going to be playing every three days. Sometimes even if you think you can do it, your body says otherwise. Today we showed the most important thing was mental strength. When you have that kind of mentality, you can meet any challenge. And that's important. As a coach, you know you have a group that is focused. I have several possibilities, I really liked the substitutes who came on in the game today, they brought a great energy even if they didn't score themselves. In terms of dynamics, they showed a lot of positive things when they came on. And that's good for what's coming up, it's reassuring. It gives a lot of confidence.
Journalist: One last question, Sonia. The next games are coming up really quickly. But there are still six days before you play Dijon and this insane schedule for December. What's the planning and schedule for the upcoming days?
Bompastor: So we play again on Saturday against Dijon. The idea is to give 48 hours rest to certain players, particularly those who want it on the mental aspect. Because as you said, we're really going to have a packed schedule, and it's important that mentally they can decompress a little. For those who want it, there will be a session on the field and recovery, of course. The idea is to have the group back as a whole on Wednesday, and work from Wednesday up to Saturday to really prepare for this game. It's a game that should allow us to continue with what we have been doing lately. And also get players involved, because there are some players who haven't gotten a lot of game time but in terms of mental spirit are top. [Not sure that attitude will win you the Champions League...] So we're not going to rotate completely, but that allows us to involve certain players who deserve playing time and could be useful later on. [shit philosophy!! Such a shit philosophy!!!]
Journalist: Thank you, Sonia, and a big congratulations. We had a segment ready, the last time Lyon was defeated in the league. We left the tape in the cutting room. We'll have to wait a little longer to use it.
Bompastor: Thank you. That makes me happy. I'm glad you did work for nothing.

Laure Boulleau will no longer be Sporting Coordinator at PSG Féminines and will focus on her mass media career. Although the club was expecting to have her join a team of three to replace Bruno Cheyrou as Sporting Director, Laure Boulleau has decided to part ways with the section. She will continue to be a host for PSG TV.

I have so many things I would like to say about my beloved team, my very own PSG Feminines. A team that got me into the women’s game, a team that I have been following for the past ten years. A team that has made me ache, always searching for glory, deserving such glory, and rarely ever attaining it. In fact, this team has only been glorious twice in their history, with that second time being difficult to claim. It was a messy, dirty game, that I had a hard time celebrating.
For so many years, I think I blamed Lyon. Dang it, Aulas, the league is suffering because of you! Then, as I grew up, as I understood the game better, I realized that it was not in fact Lyon’s fault. Lyon is a team that I do not like, that I will never like; come on, l’Olympique Lyonnais is the villain of every PSG film I have watched where I cry at the end. Winning all those finals, all those titles, always leaving us second.
Lyon is not a villain. In fact, Lyon is doing everything a team is supposed to do. Aulas is doing for his team what any other president in the world of men’s soccer would do for theirs. Aulas is doing exactly what Nasser does for PSG’s men’s section, with the appropriate resources that he has. In Ligue 1, PSG is often seen as a villain, because the rest of the teams cannot compete with Paris. Is Paris really a villain? No, Nasser does what he must with what he has; and what he has, is a lot.
The inverse of this situation leaves us with a president that does what he must with what he has (Aulas), and another president that does not. This can be proven time and again over the years of PSG Feminines. Really, to my point of view, what has kept PSG Feminines alive are the players themselves, keeping the faith and, more than anything else, the loyalty for the colors that they represent. Over the years, PSG has had players such as Sabrina Delannoy, Katarzyna Kiedrzynek, Laure Boulleau, even Jessica Houara, that have stuck through the thick and thin with this club. Furthermore, you have the players that arrive and are quick to demonstrate love for the jersey, such as Irene Paredes, Ashley Lawrence, Eve Perisset. This, along other players from the Academy, such as Katoto and Geyoro, have been the base to keep PSG afloat. However, this base has not been enough to create a winning team.
Around this strong base of players that would give their life for you, like Boulleau or Delannoy, and the talent you can create from your academy, you need to recruit. This combination of factors is what has made Lyon so successful. Over the years, PSG has recruited in a way that is almost shameful. They have indeed gotten some recruits that are absolutely wonderful, such as Paredes, Lawrence, Endler, Cruz, Vero during her prime, Cristiane! Beyond a couple of names, PSG has had a very lazy recruiting. While Lyon is out there recruiting the best, PSG ends up getting one good recruit for every five that they get.
In the most recent era of PSG Feminines, the club has acquired the likes of Pekel, Vanmechelen, the older Hegerberg, Dudek, Daiane, Voll, Palacin, Cook, even Nadim. Nadim is a legend, and although I am incredibly fond of her,  she is past her prime. All of these players have one thing in common: they have all been recruited to be loaned out, or to warm our bench. PSG recruitment has given me the impression that they recruit just so that the league sees that they are doing something. This is especially evident when well-known names are recruited, a huge deal is made out of it, and the player does not even make the team’s roster, or sits on the bench. The best examples of this phenomenon are current, and their names are Nadia Nadim and  Andrine Hegerberg.
PSG Feminines is one step away from finally dethroning Lyon in France, and becoming European champions. Out of the three factors that have made Lyon a beast, they already have two. Bruno Cheyrou needs to be fired, and that spot should be replaced with a sporting director that does not only know the world of women’s soccer, but that is fond of such world. It seems like nepotism, almost, looking at who Cheyrou is friends with.
The girls are enthusiastic, they are close to each other, they have the Ultras, their stadium next to the Parc, they just need that one final ingredient. I believe that PSG men need to win that Champions League title, and maybe Nasser can take on a new project, or at least assign someone to it if he is just utterly uninterested. In the meantime, and while we get that final ingredient that is recruiting, I will be supporting this wonderful group of girls. Warriors that continue to be competitive and strong despite a management that is missing out on the opportunity to care.

OL - Issy Postgame Interviews
Me @ OL Comms Dept: pay me!!! I understand the importance of loving something that loves you back AND I am bilingual in French and English.
JEAN-MICHEL AULAS INTERVIEW
Journalist: One more title, which was already won the previous [league] day. But what a great season from Olympique Lyonnais Féminin.
Aulas: Yeah, it's a really accomplished season - on the field, around the field, even in the stands [Note: Issy game was sold-out] where we can really see that women's football is taking off, both in terms of popularity and also in terms of connecting with the public which is always there, and a team that really blew us away during the entire season, and who blew us away even tonight. All of Lyon's principals were respected, even if there was a rotation in the team. And we know it was unfortunate for this Issy team who got relegated tonight, but we saw the Lyon team play like normal, who is the rules of the sport. So there was a lot of fair play on top of a really exceptional season.
Journalist: We know about your affection for your women's team, for women's football. What can we - for next season, what can we build on to make it even better?
Aulas: Well first of all we need to stay at this level, because we know that all the countries, especially the European ones, are continue to rise. I know also that French women's football is progressing. There are now four, five teams who can compete against each other in a game. So you have to prepare yourself in the best way. We anticipated that, and now we have a structure in place, a really high level structure with Sonia [Bompastor] and Camille [Abily] at the helm. But also on the one hand a Sporting Director, who is someone who supervises, Bruno Cheyrou [head of scouting / recruitment at Lyon for both women and men], we also have a Football Director, Vincent. So we have a homogenous structure, men/women, complete parity with the same people. And we try to build from that. We begin the recruitment process extremely early. We've already put in a lot of work. And we're going to surprise a lot of people with the signings. And then there's the rise of the academy, which handles and produces a lot of young quality players. We saw our U-19 team were Champions of France. It was something really fantastic for us, winning the Coupe Gambardella on the guys side, and winning the U-19s with the girls. It's really what allows this women's football to evolve, to prepare itself with the academy, but also with international players as we saw tonight, who bring experience and skill.
Journalist: Okay, we know that OL - we know that OL -
[Malard, Renard, MBock interrupt the interview]
Journalist: You're in high demand. Okay, so we know that OL [as an institution] knows how to get the job done. We know also that you have your place in the federation, etc. We know everyone is working [behind the scenes]. What will allow the league to perform even better?
Aulas: So you know with the federation, with the support of Noel Le Graet, we're going to create the Committee [of Professional Sports]. I accepted the position of President [of that Committee]. It's possible we didn't announce it in the best of ways, even internally. I had to explain all the work that's been done this year and how that is the foundation for what's going to come next year and all the following years. We're going to revamp the competitions, the youth academy centers for female footballers for clubs who have an interest in an academy, and we're going to change the hierarchy in terms of the competitions, which will allow us to have a greater number of elite [clubs] in both D1 and D2, but will also allow the academy centers of the bigger clubs to participate in these competitions. This will allow the younger players who have talent but aren't eligible for European tournaments to prove themselves to their clubs. So there's a lot of work behind the scenes. I know some are impatient. And, well, that's normal, because other countries are really moving quickly. But I think it's really important to focus on the elite, because when you make the elite progress, everything else progresses as well. So reforms are on the way. I hope the High Commissioner will approve these reforms, so that we can move towards turning the entire league as professional, especially those within the Federation [Note: clubs that aren't pro gets subsidies from the French Federation. Aulas is making an implicit dig here because Lyon has to pay "dues" which go towards helping fund these non-pro clubs.] This will really help the development of French football. We know the French national team is great, they're going to be playing in the Euros. And when you see the players who are here, who are at Paris Saint Germain, they're in the best clubs in France and in Europe. I have no doubt that these performances will pull the team to a higher level.
Journalist: Thank you, Mr. President, and congratulations again.
SONIA BOMPASTOR INTERVIEW
Journalist: Sonia, first of all, congratulations on a great night, and the title, this 15th title.
Bompastor: Yeah, thank you, thank you to everybody. It's true that we are really happy. The season was long and there were some moments of doubt at times. To finish like this at home, with a great win, we were able to have the maximum amount of players participate in these festivities, and to celebrate with our fans, it's good. I am happy.
Journalist: We could really see the project [you put] in place. We could feel that there was a beginning of the season that was really, as you said, it was really hard, because there were a lot of injuries, you could never really put together a consistent starting 11. And then when you found the right system, we could really feel the team gain momentum.
Bompastor: Yeah, it's true. A team, just like players, it's like a human being really. You have to trust it. [Note: best part of this is Abily and Bompastor's daughter running up to Bompastor in the background] It needs confidence. We suffered a lot with all the injuries that happened throughout the season. That didn't allow me personally, or the staff, to really work on the innate connections. I asked a lot of the players to have to adapt, to play in a position that wasn't exactly their preferred position [Note - Henry absolutely hated playing CB] But they also rose up to the occasion. And that's an important value to have when you want to win titles. And then towards the season we had a group that was a little more stacked and a consistent starting 11 started to form [Bompastor's daughter knocks her off balance] And that allowed us to really hit top form at the right moment especially in the sprint towards the finish line.
Journalist: We often talk about the "Lyon DNA". But we could feel the Bompastor influence in terms of the character. And that was missing maybe a little bit last season, especially in terms of winning titles. And we also saw again the joy from the players, to be together, to be happy together. And that's really important.
Bompastor: Yeah. Yeah, personally I am someone who has high expectations when it comes to work ethics. I ask the same of my players, to hold themselves to high standards, both personally and in terms of the group. And, yeah, when you go onto the field you have to give everything. Sometimes it happens, you can fall short in a match. But you shouldn't have any regrets. And there are other values, like solidarity, like doing things together. That's important. And it's true that sometimes we don't agree. But if there is communication, being honest and transparent, you can find a way to have middle ground so we can accomplish our goals and win the matches which will give us the titles. That's important.
Journalist: Just one last thing, maybe. There's the players, but there's also the staff, without whom a coach isn't anything. There's also been this cohesion with the staff, a unity.
Bompastor: Yeah. Honestly, I really want to thank them. And thank you for offering me that opportunity. My technical staff, my relationship with Camille [Abily], obviously. I think it's a strength. My entire medical staff, my physical fitness team [Bompastor grunts as her daughter knocks her off balance again] The entire staff, really. It's true that I think we work well together, we have the same objectives. We go forward together, in a coherent manner. I think that's important because there are so many parameters to take into consideration that to do it alone, it's complicated. And today I am surrounded by people who make up for my weaknesses, and who are able to tell me things even if I don't want to hear it. And those are two really important elements if you want to be successful.
EUGENIE LE SOMMER INTERVIEW
Journalist: Eugenie, a good evening if you put it in perspective with this title. I could say a good season as well, because you had a good experience with OL Reign. And then the reunion with the French league title.
Le Sommer: Yeah, that's it. It's really nice to come and win these titles. I spent six months in the US, it was a great experience. Unfortunately I didn't win the league over there. But I experienced some really great moments over there, both on a sporting level and as a human being. And I was happy to come back too, to see my friends [other Lyon players] again. And when we finish the season like we did, it's really fantastic. And I'm really happy to have come back and won these trophies. We have a great group, a great team. And so yeah, really happy.
Journalist: I just want to congratulate you on your mentality. To come back into a team like this one, a team that has already bonded. And even with your experience, the titles you have won, it must not have been easy. Sometimes you found yourself as a substitute, sometimes you were starting. You always went along with it. This means that you will be here next season as a starter. We know your desire to win. It will be different next season.
Le Sommer: Yeah, it's true it's always difficult to come in to a group in the middle of a season. The team was winning as well. So I tried to fight for my place and do what is best for the team. After that, it wasn't always easy, there were a lot of injuries. I had to play in the midfield sometimes. And then I was the one who got injured. And when I got back it was right at the end of the season. But I'm really happy, and I feel like I gained experience as well. It's always moments like that that you learn, you become more mature. So I'm happy, I'm happy [the season] ended like this. I'm happy to be back. I would have preferred to have played in more games for sure and more playing time, but I gave everything in practice to make it onto the team sheet. After, we have a really stacked team. I was at the service of the team. I know my qualities and I know what I can bring to the team. But anyway, I'm happy about tonight.
CAMILLE ABILY INTERVIEW
Journalist: Camille, you were used to titles as a player. Here's a title as an assistant coach. It's also a nice moment.
Abily: Yeah, it's not exactly the same happiness, I guess you internalize it a bit more. But it's true it's really satisfying. We had a good season, and the girls were really great.
Journalist: Your main focus was on the opposition. We know you traveled for the Champions League and in D1. You watched a lot of opponents. Is that also one of the strengths of the staff? To have really analyzed the game and put in place the tactics you wanted?
Abily: Yeah, I think women's football has progressed enormously. Teams are more and more ready. So I think it's important - the most minute detail can make a difference. And it's true that along with Maeva Ruiz [video analyst for OL Féminin], we really focused on the opponents. And I like that, analyzing football is really what makes me happy. And with Sonia [Bompastor], we talk about how we make put the opponent under pressure, make it difficult for them.
Journalist: We were talking with President [Aulas], there were some really nice things that happened this year, with the multiple pregnancies within the team, and also have put two women [Bompastor and Abily] in charge of this team, two former players. That's quite an impact statement.
Abily: Yeah, of course. I find it to be something to be proud of. It could have been the case earlier but it wasn't. Anyway I think we didn't really rely enough on older players who could have brought a lot to the club. But now we have Sonia [Bompastor] as head coach, myself as number 2. So that's good. It should continue like that.
ALICE SOMBATH AND KYSHA SYLLA INTERVEW
Journalist: Well, the youth had something to say. You participated in the league win, in the Champions League. How does it feel to be so young and get these kind of titles?
Sylla: Yeah, it's really huge. We're young, we're in a top club with the top players. To be able to experience this, it's always been one of our objectives. After, we want to play in these types of games all the time. It's huge.
Sombath: And win them for the coming years as well. While playing.
Journalist: We saw another title being won, the U-19s. French Champions. That's something you've won as well. Well, not with the same club for you, Alice. But does it mean that the youth players deserve a seat at the table at Olympique Lyonnais?
Sylla: Yeah, obviously we're sending a very clear message. We showed it's not just the super experienced players, there's also the younger players. That's the future. We're really proud to represent this club. [Sylla taps the badge]
Sombath: I'm good, you covered everything.
Journalist: A quick word. You're going to involved in the call-ups [for the youth teams]. There's the European Championships, the World Cup. It's important on an international level to represent Olympique Lyonnais.
Sylla: Yeah, it's really important because we're not only representing France, we're representing our club as well. And we're really proud, it's something to be proud of considering our age.
Sombath: We're going to try and be prepared as possible to come back with a trophy.
ROMAIN SEGUI INTERVIEW
[Romain is in charge of OL Feminin's fitness training]
Journalist: Romain, an exceptional season with two trophies at the end. It's fantastic.
Segui: Yeah, it's extraordinary. I know Timothee is in the studio right now. We saw each other when preseason kicked off in July. The first words I said to him was "this is the year of reconquering [our titles]." And I think we did that, you know. We won two titles. The two most important ones, I guess, because this season has been long. And winning the UWCL against Barcelona, who was a good team - still are a good team - I think the girls did an incredible match in that final. And what an incredible season. We finished with an 11-point lead. I think it's been a while since that happened. So despite all the injuries we got, the team still stuck together, the staff as well. And we managed to get the titles back.
Journalist: Earlier, Sonia [Bompastor] was talking about her staff. We know the physical preparation is an important aspect in a team. How did you make this team gain [physical] momentum?
Segui: Well first of all, I can't be the only one who takes credit for this. I had two extra people, Antonin Da Fonseca [note: Danielle van de Donk's physical trainer] and Remi Pullara. I like to say we're a team who handles all the physical preparation. And I'm really thankful for them. After that, our goal was to have a big preparation for the season, with the emphasis in July-August [#bikeride]. We gained in moment. I thought overall the first six months were mostly good. We tried to do a similar thing in January. We suffered a little in January and February. Our goal was to be ready for the end of the season, the "money time". I think we accomplished that. We hit that low point in January and February but it ended well.
Journalist: So we know you're a big fan of football, of women's football. You've followed them since Gerland [Lyon moved to Parc OL in 2016]. It's something else, to be with this particular team.
Segui: Yeah, it's extraordinary to be with this group. It's an honor, first of all. I had been following them for a long time. What's really extraordinary is how hardworking they are. Personally I took over, everyone on the outside was like oh, it's women's football, it can't be that hard to win titles. But nothing is easy. There is nothing easy. Everyday the girls are like, "What can we improve on? How can we get better?" even though they've already won everything. They always want to do better. And that's a real pleasure [to be around].
KADEISHA BUCHANAN INTERVIEW
[Note: For reasons that half-annoy me and half-perplex me, Buchanan wasn't able to do the entire interview in French despite having lived in France for 5 1/2 years, so I noted when she switched to English]
Journalist: [In French] First of all, Kadeisha, a huge thank you from the entire Olympique Lyonnais for all these years, these wonderful years, and all these titles.
Buchanan: [in French] Thank you, thank you to the President [Aulas], thank you to the club. [In English] Just for having me. Five and a half years with this club, and I'm very thankful for this opportunity that was given to me and for all the coaches. I'm very grateful for all the players that I've played with. This team is special. Each year it gets better and better. And I'm just really sad to be leaving. It's a really beautiful team that we have here.
Journalist: [in French] Kadeisha, thank you again for your professionalism. I've seen you play, I saw you in the Olympic Games, you were extraordinary with Canada. You really improved. And today, a Champions League win, and another French title.
Buchanan: [in English] Yes. Yeah, thank you. Coming here, I wanted to get better, and this was the best team to be with. So every day, I came, and I learned. And each year my game got better and better. And I just have to thank the players and the staff and the club for helping me get better and better, and making me be the best player I can.
Journalist: [in French] The road doesn't end here for you. Can you tell us your new club?
Buchanan: [in French] Not right now, but soon.

Anger of supporters in Lyon
Les Bad Gones and Lyon 1950, two flagship associations of Lyon supporters, expressed their dissatisfaction this Sunday on the forecourt of Groupama Stadium. Armed with signs hostile to the management – to the director of football Vincent Ponsot and to the director of the recruitment unit Bruno Cheyrou in particular – the Rhone ultras have thus demanded a restructuring of the sports center of…
