im gon keep yapping about the sound design for the magnus protocol because its driving me insane
the difference between the two podcasts is so drastic its FRIGHTENING
The Magnus Archives intro/outro: high-pitched, screeching, eerie, dies off with what sounds like a stone tumbling into the depths and lights turning on/off, water, sounds like the darkness of a cave that you must descend into even though you're terrified, but you do it anyway
The Magnus Protocol intro/outro: LOUD, deep, bone-chilling/shaking, foreboding, it sounds like darkness in a different way, like the great throat of some unknown beast that is hundreds of times larger and older than us and will swallow us whole; it's fear that hunts us, instead of us hunting it
-
also, side note/addition because i realized i forgot to add WHY it freaked me out
long story short, i was around 50% deaf in my right ear until I was 12 years old (reconstructive surgery truly is something I am so grateful for) and now I'm back to a fairly normal hearing range.
The problem?
I can't hear low tones as easily.
the magnus protocol is heavily reliant on lower tones, so what I hear is likely not how most people hear it, but for me it sputters, almost, parts of it are kind of missing, and I know I'm not hearing it right, which freaks me the fuck out.

spoilers for TMAGP 7
Doesn’t this episode sound like the fears coming into the TMAGP universe???
Cause we know hilltop road was where there was that rift in TMA, where the web prepared a path for the fears and where that one cleaning lady fell into at the beginning.
And sure, tmagp probably doesn’t use the same fear system as tma and they probably don’t work the same way. Personally I was really liking the “fears are desires now” theory but I don’t really see it applying to this episode.
Unless!!! This incident/statement marks the point in which the tma fears passed through the hilltop rift and manifested (maybe differently) in the tmagp universe.
Because we really see manifestation of almost all 14 fears: the volunteers and all of the taxidermy remind me of the Stranger, the pickled jar with human fingers is of the flesh, the coins, instruments and blood makes me think of the slaughter, all the dead animals and gunshots feel like the hunt, the black ooze might be the dark, there being so much stuff she’s almost buried alive, the hilltop centre burning down is very much the desolation…
I don’t know if they were all there but A LOT of them were, which makes me think that this might be how the fears passing into this universe manifested.

Happy Thursday everyone, I know there's no ep this week so I'm gonna take the opportunity to share my theory with the class.
My friend and I have been calling it the "fear smoothie" theory, and I believe that our encounters with fears consist of two or more entities working as one to create even more terrifying and horrific instances.
So during TMA we kinda caught on to the fact that each of the fears has a handful of signature tropes associated with them! (think manikins or doors, that kind of thing. Just stuff that gets the audience to catch onto who might be behind a statement) Well as I've been listening to TMAGP I've been trying to find those same tropes and I noticed something interesting. (and this is gonna be a bit long but bear with me)
In each of the eps so far I have picked up tropes from two or more of the fears working in tandem to create even more horrific situations!
How did this happen? Good question I have three equally plausible situations on why the entities are doing this.
Number 1: During the aftermath of the eyepocalypse the fears were smushed even closer together than they had been previously been, when they were forced through the hole in the universe. Therefore they are now so intrinsically close that they physically cannot work separately.
Number 2: This is web bullshit, most of the fears aren't really too conscious besides "feed" so it makes sense if the web is trying to relive what it was like in the eyepocalypse.
Number 3: The fears remember how wonderful it was when the world went wrong. They are working together because they liked it. it made them realize that their teamwork was the best way to get the most fear and by working together they are hoping to create another "Archivist" (someone touched by all of the fears) to put them back to their full power. What's the best way to do that? Make 100 avatars touched by at least 2 fears each and make them race!
Here is my current list of eps and what I think the smoothies are for each:
EP 1 First Shift ~ Eye + Web
EP 2 Making Adjustments ~ Flesh + Desolation
EP 3 Putting Down Roots ~ Corruption + Spiral
EP 4 Taking Notes ~ Slaughter + Flesh
EP 5 Personal Screening ~ Web + Stranger
EP 6 Introductions ~ Flesh + Spiral
EP 7 Give and Take ~ Stranger + Buried
EP8 Running on Empty ~ Spiral + Lonely (+ some elements of the Vast and the Flesh but not enough to officially make the board)
EP 9 Rolling With It ~ Hunt + End
EP 10 Saturday Night ~ Hunt + Stranger
Anywho! Lemme know if you have any ideas for future eps as well as if you disagree with one of my points and think a different fear would fit better!!

hoooooooooo boy, tmagp 4 go-
this time its becoming apparent that there are some themes and clues that tmagp wants us to notice, the sections stand out, begging for attention
like the recurring theme of bones, and blood, and gore in general (it might be too soon to tell exactly what themes are leading to, but they are definitely there)
the violin could fit right in grifter's bone with it's affinity to music and violence
(the music feels aligned to circus over spiral or web
tho there are elements of the web what with the mind control, but i fear all fears possess a certain degree of control, as such
the violence feels more of the slaughter variety rather than the hunt, though you could make a valid argument for flesh as the words 'sacrifice', 'payment' and 'creature with needs and purposes of its own' do stick in mind
once again i do not think that tmagp follows the same format as the smirke's fourteen (or 15) , i merely use them as parallels to better explain what aspects of the episode sticks out to me (and for me refer back later on))
as other listeners have noted, another theme that tmagp in general follows, is 'obsession', rather than tma's 'fear'
i feel this is also paralleling (intentionally or not) the audience's own listening habits and motives
we first consumed the magnus archives for its content of horror
and yet we are back for the magnus protocol like we never left, and perhaps
we never did
the statement's first person pov depicts a truly horrific picture of the slaughter, of the violence that the violin demands
and his descriptions of the mania on the audience's faces too
it's eerily reminiscent of the france's dancing plague
enough about the statement, lets talk about my boy sam and his co-workers, and their workplace in general
there's a protocol surrounding the magnus institute? interesting interesting, very similar to the police division daisy and basira were part of, the unofficial supernatural division
is this like the civil servant version of such?
another thing that is interesting; how is freddy getting these statements incidents? like sam asked, how exactly does a letter from the 18th century end up in the system?
i don't think gwen's answer is satisfactory (and we weren't meant to either), sure someone might be updating the archives website for reasons unknown but rarely in magpod is something a dead end, every little thing is a clue, a small part of the larger picture
so how exactly does a letter from the 18th century is in freddy's system?
perhaps an 'avatar' or the equivalent (such people are suggested to exist in tmagp universe, like the tattooist from daria's statement)
or maybe the fears themselves manifest in phenomena that upload relevant content to freddy
colin my guy, still being iconic and not trusting tech, hats off to you, the only real character in the whole show
never trust any piece of technology older than paper
the video of lena that gwen got in the end? weird? yeah, fuck yes, but how did she even get it? is there any sort of personal communication available on the ancient system? why gwen?
i have so many questions and so many more thoughts, but this is already so long, im gonna write a separate post about tmagp so far, in general

Hey, sorry if this is long, but I really like what you guys are doing and have nowhere else to put my theories, so...
Firstly, sorry to be that person, but I actually think you mislabeled the entities for two episodes. Needles reads like an avatar of the slaughter to me. It's like Lietner said, the physical description is less important then the emotional or metaphorical. Needles' thing isn't "look at this scary trick I can do with my flesh body." It's "I am going to cause you intense pain at random by stabbing you with my needles. Please be scared of me :)"
I was also surprised you didn't mark Putting Down Roots as a filth statement. Illness, rotting alive, swarming flies, a deeply unhealthy romantic love. All reads as corruption to me.
Now let's get to my fun crack theory. Episode 7 almost reads to me like the point the powers breached into the new world. Think about it, hilltop road was suddenly overwhelmed by a wave of artifacts and "people" (avatars) that map to many different powers (I counted stranger, slaughter, dark, filth, and possibly hunt among the artifacts present). The timeliness doesn't quite match up (we have a statement from the 1800s), but maybe the powers are capable of having retroactively always existed. Or maybe the fan theory that the entities are now the "hungers" that feed on obsession was true until the fears intruded into the world.
Omg thank you so much for the ask I absolutely love over analyzing this goofy lil podcast and i really wanted to have this board be a collaborative and community thing for all of us TMAG/TMAGP fans out there!
starting with the board corrections you pointed out you are absolutely right after reading this I ended up rereading the wiki entries about the Entities because its been a hot second since I've read up on those goobers and I've kinda forgotten how many little nuances that each one has. I had no idea how we missed the clear corruption tie-ins that were occurring in Samuel Webbers journal (Putting Down Roots) especially when you brought up his toxic relationship to his partner.
As with Needles before doing my reread about the fears I just assumed flesh because body modified with needles. but looking into it, sudden piercing needles more cleanly falls into slaughter.
I actually have this ongoing theory originated by my roommate and other blog contributor that the fears might have been scrambled when crossing dimensions. maybe because of this many minor powers have begun to branch out from the main 15 and with that hybrid avatars and entities have been created. With needles I think maybe they fall under the umbrella of slaughter and spiral because of the way they mentally toy with their victims. also could explain why needles has to convince the man on the phone that they're scary because this hybrid power may be new and people have not gotten fearful of it yet.
I'll be making those changes for next weeks board so thank you for pointing them out :D
on to your theory that would make sense especially since this episode (EP 7) is kind of serving as the catalyst for the story to shift into high gear. I think that if the Hilltop charity shop was the entrance point for all of the fears to enter the world it would make complete sense. Hilltop is the one place in the Magnus canon that people have reported traveling to different dimensions. also the date of the incident falls right about the time that Archives started early 2016 so the fears may have also gone back in time to when Jon became the Archivist in TMAs universe (since Jons death is the catalyst that forced them to jump dimensions.) I'm really liking where your theory is heading
also real quick if anyone has more info about the theory that Protocols world lived off of hunger and desire pre the fears appearing I'd love to hear more about that because I've never heard of the until now.
Again thank you so much for the ask I'm so happy you're liking what we're doing here and I hope you continue to share your thoughts and theories with this blog.

TMAGP 6 Thoughts: Old Friends
Lots to talk about this time although maybe not lots to say. We'll see. This was a Jonny episode so that's bound to happen. Either way spoilers for episode 6 below the cut.
So, I think we all know the biggest thing here; mini-donuts are finally confirmed. Okay, for actual serious things; Alice likes Choco Liebnitz and has confirmed to have immaculate biscuit standards but alternate biscuit spellings.
For the stuff that largely doesn't matter we've got a "surprise" 4th returning character, a new avatar in a fun new flavour, and a statement you know people are going to try to cram into the desire theory.
Starting from the bottom up for no real reason this was a very overtly fear driven episode. I'm not going to spend too much time on this bit because I think trash talking this theory is in poor taste. But I don't buy it and think it's often very strained and ignores big chunks of things to justify itself, and seems to forget just how much of TMA was wrapped up in desires too. The cosmology was always set up to have some people running away from the Fears and some people running towards them. TMP hasn't really done much different there to my mind and this episode is a pretty hard break away from a lot of the things people like to latch onto for the desire theory.
Needles up next then and I'm a big fan. Harry Roebuck obviously did a great job, and the different formats continue to do some great work. There isn't really a lot to say about the incident in general other than the above. It's all pretty normal stuff outside of the fun with the format. But what is interesting, apart from another character we'll see return, is that Needles is both very close to and very far from a TMA character. Both ways you can take that. Obviously there are some pretty big Stranger and Spiral vibes here. Like, if you throw Needles next to Nikola they'd seem totally normal. That's almost certainly not accidental because of how it contrasts to the rest of them. Pain isn't out of place for the Stranger's lot as a threat but it is in such an extreme example of it. Needles is more about pain than they are about anything else they're not preying on the fear of the uncanny. That would typically be a great fit for The Desolation except the way it manifests here is pretty distinctly not part of the Lightless Flame's lot. The Hunt or the Slaughter are also bad touchstones here because Needles really seems to be about a slow and restrained sort of pain that's out of place in those ideas of it. Which is all to say this the most overt showcasing of different manifestations so far. We've seen lots of stuff like TMA fears but twisted in TMP already but I think this one is deliberately set up to hammer that point home. We see something that is on first glance very at home in TMA until the details leave it without a solid home in Smirke's 14.
Finally, the wonderful return of Lowri Ann Davies as Celia. Celia Ripley at that which I'm sure isn't a reference to anything. So, I'm sure some people will say this is more likely to be the Celia native to TMP but to that I'd say there probably isn't one. There is likely a Lynne Hammond in TMP but I doubt she also lost her name and took a new one. Combined with the whole "I don’t scare so easy these days." comment (especially if taken with her namesake) I think it's the contrarian stance to suggest this isn't TMA's Celia at this stage. It might obviously change as we get more info but another TMA character, especially a relatively minor one, shouldn't be a surprise in the TMA sequel. How she got here is more interesting because it's likely not how JMJ managed it and probably a more calculated effort through The Gap or a similar anomaly. Either way, very excited to see where that goes.
DPHW Theory: Another set of fairly unexciting numbers. This is good and bad. The more this occurs the more likely it is I'm correct and called it very early, but it's also less fun to dig into. Either way it's 4824 which makes a good deal of sense overall. I'd expect D to be a little higher just from the statement but Needles doesn't seem like they want to kill anyone really and it's the liminal state of uncertainty that is the sweet spot for them. Pain is their game though and an 8 is a very strong showing for it. So that's all good. 2 for H also makes sense they seem to be able to disable people but not in an overtly supernatural way and I wouldn't say it was a particular focus of the ordeal. Finally, a 4 for W tracks pretty well for out pointy Distortion-lite new friend.
CAT#R# Theory: CAT1RB leaves little to be said beyond what I've already said other than what it was that I said last time probably isn't right. But I've not found a CAT#R# theory that I particularly love yet so nothing of great import has been lost.
Header talk: Back to some measure of normalcy here with Injury (needles) -/- intimidation. And I might as well talk about my current ideas for how crosslinks work. For the first few eps I had a pretty solid idea based around emotional states. Regret, Trespass, Dysmorphic, and Guilt (assuming 3 was misfiled) all seemed like the central emotional weight of each incident. But then Musical happened and that didn't fit with that idea. So I thought maybe it's about preoccupation. It's not strictly emotional but it's driven by what the incident's subject has at the forefront of their mind during the events. That would track with each of them. But then, of course, Invitation happened which makes that theory not hold up. Afterwards I thought that it might be the vector instead and the more I think about it the more it makes sense. Crosslinks might describe the route an incident takes to manifest, how it finds its way into reality. Harriet's regret pushes her to contact whichever avatar Frankenstein-ed Arthur, RedCanary's trespassing triggered the Institute's protections, Daria's dysmorphia shaped how she was able to sculpt herself, Dr. Webber's guilt drew him into the infection's grasp/the plant life in the garden spread the infection, the violin collects its payment through music, and Voyeur claimed another victim via invitation. And now we have Needles who intimidates their victims for the fear they crave. I'm sure the next episode will ruin this theory too but that's half the fun.

MPHFPC characters as TMA fears:
Alma: the End (stopping time to live forever, knowing that if she strays too long she will decay)
Hugh: the corruption (its the bees)
Emma: the desolation (fire)
Jacob: either the eye or the hunt (he's the only one that can see the monsters/he learns to hunt and kill them and thinks that that's all he's good for)
Millard: the eye (invisible but also lots of knowledge?)
Olive: the vast (floating forever unless tethered)
Claire: the flesh (good teeth for it)
Enoch: the end, maybe web (he controls the inanimate so....yeah)
Bronwyn: idk, the hunt maybe? (very determined and was so so desperate to find Miss P when she went missing)
Fiona: the corruption (specifically thinking of tmagp 3)
Noor: the dark (light eater and all that shit)
Should I write an au for this? Maybe. Hm. We shall see.

SPOILERS FOR TMAGP
Tumblr media
So here’s the notes I took
1. I ALWAYS FORGET TO SAY IT BUT THE BEEPING NOISE IN THE BEGINNING SOUNDS LIKE A HEART MONITOR OR WHATEVER THE ONE THING IS
2. This guy was very Avatar-like. Especially with the lack of fear making them angry. That would piss off an Avatar
3. I get that it wasn’t medical but still. Where would medical fears go? The End? But I feel like not all medical anxiety is death related. At least for me. The Flesh maybe?
4. This was really just an extension of 3 but it feels Hunt adjacent? I don’t think medical fears would fit The Hunt, but the statement itself wasn’t medical, I was just thinking about that bc of the needles. Idk I’m trying not to force these statements into categories but it’s hard
5. I stand by that. Celia is my number one
6. CRYING STILL. LITERALLY HAD TO PAUSE THE EPISODE ANS SOB
7. Just a joke, but I think it’s funny

I have been, once again, obsessed with TMA and newly, TMAGP and well, it seems to have translated to ieytd so...
ieytd characters assigned with fears
Obligatory warning for spoilers, both tma and all the ieytd games
While I'd love to have a set fear for every character in the games, I don't really know too much about the less-mentioned characters but I still have a decent chunk of them.
Linebreak because I definitely over-analysed this
So we all agree that the Agency has a distinct Eye flavour, right?
Reginald is definitely solely Eye-- more so in the watching aspect. He doesn't have anything in the Knowing department (be so real right now, he's dumb as bricks /aff) but definitely Watches his agents with a close eye.
Prisim on the other hand, while tinged with the Eye definitely has been affected by the Buried. In the sense that she is constantly buried under her expectations to achieve. She created the TK implant, she has to live up to those standards.
Director Morales is definitely like the Elias of the Agency. Does nothing but look pretty for the Eye, serving as a vessel.
Phoenix is really hard to decipher. I originally thought they'd be Desolation because of the fire motif but thinking about it more, they're a bit closer to the End with their penchant to avoid death.
Honestly, Zor reeks of the web. They hide in the shadows orchestrating their evil plans, coordinating and manipulating as many people as they can.
Fabby is an interesting one to me. She's definitely the Hunt. She finds so much joy in creating these traps for unsuspecting EOD agents to fall witness to. The thrill of the hunt and all that jazz.
Hivemind is so silly. So silly that they're somehow both the Web and Spiral. We see that he's got the mind control device in ieytd 3 as well as a mind-wiper. I'm sure anyone would feel like they're going crazy if they're suddenly missing a decent chunk of their memory.
Solaris is vast. She loves space and practically lived on the death engine. But, I can also see her being affected by the Lonely. She doesn't exactly have anyone stable considering the rotating cast of people sent to work on the Death Engine.
Anna gives off Slaughter vibes. I don't really know how to describe it other than the music motif she has. Pied Piper and all that shit.
Daniel Sans, despite the fact he has like, two minutes of screentime ABSOLUTELY is Corruption. Bro wants to unleash a supervirus??? Tell me that doesn't scream Corruption.
John Juniper. Oh, Juni. He has definitely been affected by the Eye. Being an actor in the spotlight would have consequences. But, I see him affiliated with the Stranger. He'd be so uncanny with his masks, both literal and metaphorical.
Ollie is Lonely. He's been stuck underwater for HOW long? That'd do something to a person

some random tmagp hiatus thoughts:
- thinking about how Needles seemed very analytical and used... some sort of logic to figure out how to really scare the operator. When the operator didnt seem scared of needles they changed it up and instead threatened them with hunting them down, which is a bit different (?) from whatever embrace they appeared to perform with the victim.
- when Alice talked about how they need to keep a distance from the cases and not look too far into it, it definitely sounds like the whole purpose of the OIAR is to remove the fear-aspect of these cases by describing them in the most convoluted and yet clear way. and if you dont stay away, you make yourself vulnerable to become either a victim or an avatar of the fears (IF there are still fears as we know them in the archives podcast)
- even though it has been established that the employees arent tied to the organisation as with the institute, they could still have the influence to keep him from getting another job anywhere else?? like i know that it is likely that its just the current job market BUT it is just as likely that OIAR can keep them unemployed until they "decide on their own" to return.
might add more as we get closer to april 11th

Scavengers
I have 10 episodes left, have wasted my whole day, and have work in 7 hours. Let's do this.
Who is this? What's happin-
Oh? "Private contemplation" you say? You suddenly have my full attention. Hold on, I have to check something on Ao3...
Tumblr media
I'm disappointed in this fandom. Oh well, let me just...
Tumblr media
Alright, where was I?
"The tunnels do have a tendency to echo." Oh my god! How many times did it come up do you wonder?!
Wait! They said they have a cult or something? Is this them?
"First name basis with the profits..." I'm sorry, they're profits?! That's hilarious, actually! Also, Jon being a smartass here is actually really funny to me.
They can sleep here. That would make me so happy.
Wait? Okay, I've seen some stuff for TMAGP (spoilers) and I know Celia apparently comes back in that series and she's the girl who talked to Martin in episode 100. The one with the bad ghost story and who he gave money for coffee. I'm sure it will come up later in the episode but honestly an A+ choice on the writer's part.
Oh, maybe you shouldn't tell them this part?!
Oh? They know each other? From therapy? Can't imagine she has the best mental image of Jon then?
Yeah, was wondering when the- Oh god the tape recorders refuse to be told no today... Stop acting like this is Jon's fault!
I was gonna make a quip of "Only seven people, you didn't even get one from each fear?" but apparently they lost a bunch of people and that is very sad actually.
The implication that the tape recorders seem to like Martin is interesting. It reminds me of Jon saying that the Eye is fond of him a few episodes back. I can't help but wonder if that's because the Eye finds him particularly interesting or capable or if it more because Jon loves him and thus the Eye kind of loves him too?
I'm not sure why but the concept of something eldritch and vastly beyond human comprehension being fascinated and possibly in love with a human is actually kind of scary to me in a way. Like, I made a post forever ago about fan translation of Uzumaki, where the characters said something to the effect of "It's like the Spiral is in love with you." and that had fundamentally changed the story and it perspective for me at the time. Because something that thrives on fear and chaos simply can not express love in a way that's human or even really safe to interact with. Case in point, Jon is one of the Eye's favorite humans and look at everything it's put him through so far.
This is all to say, if that is the direction that the story is going and the Eye is actually in love with Martin to come extent then all I can really think is "Oh god no."
Anyway, unpause.
Yes, thank you! Stop being blaming Jon for this shit!
A convenient fear that's a never ending supermarket? What fear would that even be? Like, I've worked in customer service so I guess that would be a constant and unending nightmare for me to have to go back to but interesting that it might have been enough of an issue for it to have it's own place at the end of the world.
Wait, yeah, where is the Admiral! He's just hanging out in a Hunt domain, I thought those were just memes! I'm actually really sad about that!
More of the tape recorders following Martin then... Okay, Melanie, you don't gotta be mean... Melanie, you were always this way...
Your therapist thinks your the chosen one. Weird...
Ah, that's cute...
"One of the profits chosen to walk the end time unscathed," and "the anti-christ's plus one." Aren't you two just a pair?
Yes, fantastic question! How?!
A Spiral maze? Of course a therapist would fear madness.
Gosh, that's awful! So they just explained the fears to these people and they took it in a religious way. Oh, I hate the thought of that actually! Like, what happens if you start to worship after the fact? Can you become a chosen of the fears after they've already won, I wonder?
Melanie, you lied to them, I'm guessing? Damn, okay. I'm guessing it gave them at least a little hope? That's good I guess? Yeah, this doesn't seem great.
Oh, Melanie, you are tragically sweet. Martin, you are also tragically sweet. I wish you both the best.
Okay, this is a hard conversion... Daisy, I miss you still. Basira too!
"Careful of Helen." She says. You don't say hon? Yeah, don't worry about that actually.
Yeah, I liked her too... Okay, Martin you can't just drop "Jon killed her" like that on someone and give literally no warning. Pace yourself bud!
I would argue that- I am very curious who Aaron is?
Uh? This person sounded a lot like Helen for a second and I almost went "Oh god no!"
Fair enough...
Hello Aaron? I don't know if I like you but okay... Sorry, hon, no gods of hope.
"What do you know about poetry?" Well he is dating a poet... "Nightmare Strider." That's a fun title-
"I do not want a poem." Damn Jon. Why is everyone in this hellscape either tragic or just mean?
Jesus Jon, you're becoming way more of a dick?
There was a lot to take in from that episode. Like, wow. Melanie and Georgie are profits, Jon is a prickly disaster, me wondering if the Eye is overly obsessed with Martin or if I'm just interpreting the series wrong, I have another new fic to read, just wow...
