Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #219
Brought to you by a marine biologist here to tell you to buy local!
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
Seafood is really important. I mean, food in general is important to our lives - y'know, it keeps us alive and all that. But seafood in particular, both wild-caught and those raised in aquaculture, are so important, that for many people around the world, it is the single source of protein they rely on. Of course, many island nations come to mind, especially Japan, since we're talking about Animal Crossing. In fact, seafood is so important there, that at least half of the fish that we've covered in this fish explained (counting only the extant species, mind you) are considered important fisheries in Japan or worldwide. The dark-banded rockfish is one such fish.
Tumblr media
The dark-banded rockfish appeared in AC Pocket Camp this past spring, from March to June 2022. That's a pretty long stay for one of these ACPC exclusives!
Now, there isn't much to say about the DBR as a fish. In Japan, it is called Mebaru, and accompanies a few seafood dishes as a smoked or cooked whole fish in a broth. The fish is caught wild *and* farmed to meet demand for these dishes. The DBR is often called the Japanese Red Seaperch as well and its scientific name is Sebastes inermis. It's part of the Scorpaenidae Family, a group of fish well known for their venomous spines and being prickly in general, like the red lionfish, zebra turkeyfish, weedy stingfish, and others that we've covered before. The family is quite diverse because venom and spikes are a great way to deter predators, especially around rocky or coral reefs where predators could be lurking in any crevice and you are generally small. The DBR is endemic to the Southwestern side of the main Japanese islands and near the Korean peninsula. They eat zooplankton for the most part.

Fisheries are my bread-and-butter. When you're a marine biologist, there are a lot of different paths you can take, and fisheries is great when you believe we can have our fish and eat them, too. About a third of what I do is promote local fish species to the people who live on the island I call home. The Northeast US is a hotbed for fisheries that basically built this region, including the Atlantic Cod, Sea Scallops, and American Lobster, among many more local favorites like Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass. There has been a huge uptick in aquaculture of oysters here as well. So, like the DBR is to Japan, these species come to our fish markets straight from the boats.
There's been a movement lately (within the last 20 or so years) to choose local, wherever possible. That includes getting local veggies and meat from local farms instead of big companies you see in the supermarket, and going to the local fish market to buy species caught in your area. Buying local does a lot of good for your community and the planet. Let me explain:
When you buy local, you're keeping that money circulating within your town, state, or region. You support small business instead of feeding giant, faceless corporations. And I don't mean to be such a liberal on main, but I actually do. Buying local is good for your local economy. When you buy a fish that is native to your area, you directly support the fisherman who caught it, the local dealer he sold it to, and your neighbor running the fish market.
Not only that, but you cut down the carbon emissions of your food. Seafood in general has a fraction of the carbon emissions that beef production does (and it's healthier for you overall). In fact, if you have local shellfish or seaweed farms in your area, those farms actually reduce carbon in the atmosphere! And, for a more obvious take, when you buy local, that food didn't travel a far by truck or plane as, say, a fish imported from another country. It might not have traveled at all if you buy straight from the dock!
Buying local means your food is fresher and thus is more nutritious and tastes better. When fish is imported, it is often frozen, thawed, frozen again, perhaps thawed again to process, and frozen yet again before it reaches your plate. All of that freezing and thawing ruins the meat.
And lastly, when you buy local, you have a better chance of knowing how it was caught, the regulations associated with that fishery, and knowing that your food was sustainably sourced, or grown in a bay you can actually visit.
This all applies to freshwater species as well. Find out what your local species are and choose them first. Easiest way to do that is hop on Google, find a fish market near you, and talk to the guy behind the counter.
And there you have it! Fascinating stuff, no?

Club Takamagahara (Part 2): Close Call
I was trying to figure out how to deal with the whole “Ship” situation and I decided to not have my MC shipped with anyone so as not to exclude anyone reading.  The MC is only 18 in this rendering and in the novel’s canon she could be even younger. So honestly, following the novels, it gets weird quickly. Best to leave ships at port.
Enjoy!
“UKYO I LOVE YOU!” Someone screams from the corner of the crowded dance floor.
The man removed his white cloak and tied the sleeves about his waist to reveal his bare chest to the crowd. He takes several deep breaths, making his stomach rise and fall. The muscles of his arms were sculpted and well defined as he danced on the stage with his sword among the floating cherry petals.
“Oh my god, I’m going to faint!” The woman says next to you before she promptly plops to the floor and is dragged away by a waiter who seemed to be right behind her. You stare silent and still as she’s swallowed up by the crowd of people that parts only briefly before coming together again like nothing happened.
Everyone’s eyes were on this person so it was easy for you to slip towards the edge of the crowd. Mingfei was dressed just like the waiters and there were dozens of them moving in the dark. There was no way you’d be able to pick him out even if he was standing right next to you.
The audience thundered with applause. The man wasn’t a bodybuilder like some of the other guys but you recognize the sword art as genuine and practiced. Sword arts weren’t part of your repertoire - You specialized in hand to hand and shooting - but you knew skill when you saw it.
You squint… wait is that?
It was! It was Chu Zihang! You knew him to be a shy and quiet person, not someone who could perform on stage in front of thousands of people. That said, you acknowledge you didn’t really know him. He was a performer then? Curious, you tilt your head and get closer to the stage. But it was really hard. People were pressing in with the same intent as you to be as close to the stage as possible.to watch the performance. Eventually you had to stop because the crush of people was too great. Your arms are pinned closed to your chest and you have to watch through a window of outstretched hands with cell phones.
A black-clad and masked waiter pushed a two meter long tablet onto the stage, which was covered with ice, on which a whole fish was laid out. You’d never seen a fish that big. This is something that would be a mouthful even for the whales of Siberia! Chu Zihang waved the sword and divided the fish in strong powerful strokes. One slash! And the dark red back meat was separated from the bone. Two! And the soft white belly meat was separated!
The sword moved in a blur and the sections fell into neat perfectly sliced pieces as perfect as a picture.
You, the MC, applauded politely, but the rest of the women behind you screeched like this was some sort of frenzied and spiritual experience. The noise made your skin crawl.
Something wet splashed on you smelling of alcohol, drenching your cheongsam.
“Whoops, sorry!” The woman behind you giggled.
“No… no problem…” You mutter, too quiet to be heard.
The cut fish was placed on small plates that were sent down a glowing river of water suspended from the stage. The river floated the plates down to a bar where women on translucent stools lit in many colors. They delighted in picking the fish off the plates with delicately carved chopsticks made out of coral.
In the crowd, at the same time, money was being held up in the air, as well as fingers and fans. They bid on the price of a particular large piece. As the bidding ended, the winning woman was invited on stage and she held up a large rectangular piece of fish over her head like a champion wrestler holding her belt. Meanwhile, Chu Zihang was still busy carving up the rest of the fish.
The crowd has thinned slightly and you’re finally able to get close enough. You look at him, trying to catch his eyes but he’s too focused on slice after slice. Finally he finishes the section and slides it onto a tray.
“Zihang!”
Even though your voice was not that loud, he looks at you wide eyed and shakes his head in a quick jerk. A clear message of “Not now.” And goes back to work.
Just then an excited woman rushes the stage with a bottle of champagne and dumps it down his bare back and shoulders. The crowd roars in delight and Chu Zihang doesn’t move a muscle other than his eyes down to you.
Your eyes are as big as saucers. Champagne is dripping down every muscle like golden rivers through valleys of pale skin. Both hands cover your mouth in clear horror. But then he looks away from you and you relax. Was this part of the show too?
You back away from the stage and decide maybe you should get out of here. As you’re backing up, you run into what you think is a wall but you turn around and someone in a bright purple suit grabs your shoulders. Your body reacts and elbows him hard in the ribs.
“Oof! Easy there, princess.”
That voice! You look up and immediately rear back, stumbling and staggering over your unwieldy heels and falling to the floor.
“Looks like someone has had a bit too much.” Caesar says.
A waiter comes by to pick you back up, before whooshing away like some suited fairy.
“Basara King! Please tell me you’ll stay!”
“Only if you vote for me sweetheart.” Caesar fondly leans over and kisses the woman’s hand.
“I’ll vote for you every night! The world won’t be the same without you in my life!”
He is in the purple suit, like the color of a bright purple dinosaur named Barney you remember seeing pictures of, but his hair is permed and draped over one of his eyes… eyes that are painted in purple eyeshadow. He was even wearing lipstick, bright red too. The woman goes to find a waiter. She shouts, “Fifteen tickets for Basara King!”
Once she’s gone, he asks. “Where’s your caretaker sweetie?”
You’re gasping in silent horror. “What did you do to your f-”
“Aaaah! I’ve got it! I’ve got it!” Mingfei grabs your arm and drags you away. “I told you to stay in your room!”
“Someone came in there! Lu Mingfei what happened? Where are we?” You gasp. You turn back but Caesar is already occupied with more women.
He yanks you back to the elevator and mashes the button repeatedly.  “Shh! Shh! Stop! Quiet or you’re going to ruin everything!”
Lu Mingfei looks truly desperate as he pushes you into the elevator and mashes the close door button. He presses his hand firmly against your mouth. “Listen. Swear to me that you won't say a thing about what you just saw in there. Got it?”
You blink at him. He releases your mouth and you tell him, “You’ve got a little… lipstick right…”
Mingfei furiously rubs his cheek - the wrong one - “Look… Look. I know what you’re thinking but just stop thinking! Don’t think! We have to be here. This is the only place we can hide out! We don’t have any other place to go! We lied and said we were illegal immigrants smuggled into Japan to get treatment for you. They don’t care that we don’t speak Japanese so long as we look good and make the clients happy!”
The elevator dings but he holds the “Door closed” button. “But you’re, first of all, not old enough to be allowed in, second of all, you have to stay with us in the men’s area. Also not allowed! And you’re a woman, third not allowed!  But Caesar has a plan to get you to stay but everything has to work out, so please just please…”
You’ve never seen him shaking this much. “I’m sorry.” You whisper, still against the wall.
“No, it’s just… These women are crazy!” He puts his hands over his eyes and leans his back against the wall of the elevator. He looks seriously like he’s about to weep.
You pat his shoulder. “There, there.”
“I don’t want to lose my good standing at the college and how will I ever face Nono if…” He lowers his hands. “N… never mind.” He hangs his head.  “I didn’t say anything.”
“It’s okay. You’re stressed out, but I really did have to leave the room.”
He sighed. “It’s my fault. I forgot to put the Do Not Disturb sign on…” he said glumly and allowed the elevator door to open. You hear the roar of the crowd above you and it sounds like a man is on a megaphone hyping them up. Mingfei pauses and continues to lament. “You must be so traumatized by what you saw.”
“How long do we have to stay here?” You ask as he leads you by the hand.
“Right now, it’s a temporary arrangement. We’re intern performers. This is one of the best places in town for this sort of thing so you have to pass muster and win enough popularity. If the people in the crowd love you and want you to stay, they’ll buy tickets with your name on them. You have to have at least 800 tickets and pass an interview with the club owner. Until then… anything we screw up on could get us thrown out and we can’t get thrown out, MC.”
You immediately nod. “How many tickets do we have?”
“Not enough yet. Tonight is the moment of truth.” Lu Mingfei said seriously. He leads you back to the room with the barrels.
“Oh.” You purse your lips. “Right.”
“And even then…”
“Interview.” You said. “Got it. I’ll behave.”
“I gotta go…” Mingfei sighs and leans on the door a bit.
“Can I get something to eat? Sorry…”
Lu Mingfei softens at your earnest expression. “I’ll get you something.”
The sound of popping interrupts and you startle and gasp.
But Mingfei smiles and looks down the hall. “Oh! Firecrackers! That’s good! I think Zih… I mean Ukyou got enough tickets! That also means… every table gets free champagne… damn…” He hangs his head again and blinks away tears. “I’ll bring you some food when I can, okay?” He closes the door and dashes out. Even though you wait for him, he doesn’t come back at all for hours.
You wait, sitting in the closet, your stomach growling loudly. You hadn’t been this hungry in a while but it wasn’t completely alien. The smell of rich foods was wafting down and not being helpful though. The best remedy for hunger was sleep so you shed the boozy cheongsam, shower again and go lay down.
You don’t remember falling asleep but you wake up to voices. Hunger pangs were seriously gnawing at you now and you got up to approach the door The space is full of the fragrant steam from baths mixed with the scent of cigar smoke. They must be bathing, but you’re so hungry.
“All that’s left then is to interview the owner… Do we have an appointment or something?” Lu Mingfei asks.
“No. It’s up to them when they see us. And they still have to agree to let MC stay here so you need to do better, Mingfei.”
“I know… I just didn’t expect her to wake up today.”
You’d never heard them sound so exhausted before, as if they’d gotten no rest at all since the battle of the streets of Chizuru. Lu Mingfei said that they’d been forced to work here. You don’t know the hours from the looks of things, they wouldn’t be able to ask off because their tenancy depended on performance. But if you hadn’t eaten in three days then you need to eat now, even if it inconveniences them.
You knock gently. “Can I have my food please?”
You’re answered by splashing around, and Mingfei yelping. “MC! Don’t open the door!”
Caesar’s voice. “Will you relax? We’re in the bath. She’s already seen Chu Zihang’s body and she was fine right? Sure, MC… come on in.”
You crack the door open. The three barrels are now occupied with Caesar, Zihang and…only Mingfei’s bubbles appeared to pop on the surface of the water. After a few seconds, Mingfei’s head came up, open mouthed and gasping. “Don’t look! Don’t look! You have to preserve what innocence you have left!”
Caesar pulled his cigar out of his mouth.  He was reclined, covered in hickies and other miscellaneous marks all over his broad muscular chest. The makeup was thankfully gone. “You’re assuming a lot. How do you know she’s innocent?”
Mingfei was still gasping. “We should assume all young ladies are innocent!”
Caesar nods to the bag on the TV and you hurry to it. Inside is some of the leftover sushi, some rice, and a few pieces of cheese. “Sorry it’s not much but we can’t exactly be caught pilfering food for someone who’s not supposed to be here.”
Chu Zihang was sitting back, eyes on a newspaper.
You grin at him.  “Congratulations, Senpai on your tickets.”
“Ah…” He muttered as the only acknowledgement..
“Little sister, I’m sorry you had to see Senpai like this. You must have been so shocked. This isn’t normal I swear.” Mingfei was still just a floating head in a barrel, determined to keep his body below water.
You stuff your mouth with the sushi. It was fresh and still tasted of the sea. You hum with delight. “This is good!”
“I mean you must feel like… seeing him like that… you… I mean … even the girl’s in the college, they go crazy even when he has his shirt on.” Mingfei peers at you as you’re digging through the bag for the cheese. It’s so fancy it’s wrapped in black cloth and you can smell it through the fabric.
“Don’t eat too quickly.” Chu Zihang murmured.
“MC, can you be a doll and throw some more wood on the fire?” Caesar asks.
You chew the cheese and get a log from the rack and take it to Caesar’s bath. You bend over, open the old furnace carefully and toss it in, quickly shutting the door. Mingfei watches you, quiet. Then you suddenly straighten. “Boo!”
“Ah! Don’t look!” He ducks down, inhales water and starts choking.
Caesar massages his temples.
You giggle at his distress and simultaneously ignore it. “If Senior Brother has never done this before, that makes it three times as impressive.”
“Hey, don't compliment Zihang and not me.” Caesar grumbles.
You rub your chin, “Then, Caesar must work hard to keep up such a muscular chest! I don’t think I’ve seen one like it since the bear hunters passed through the port!”
He bit his cigar and smiled. “Thank you!”
Chu Zihang lowered his paper a moment, glared and then lifted it.
Mingfei moaned. “All of this is so wrong.”
“If it bothers you that much I’ll leave.” You say, grabbing the bag.
“It might help if you answer the question simply, MC. Are you innocent?” Asks Caesar, blows out a puff of smoke.
“Boss, why are you being so direct?!”
“Yes,” you reply, “But I don’t feel that way about any of you. You’re my Senior Brothers.” You pause. “...quite senior in fact. You look nice but we’re not a good fit” You turn to Mingfei with a pointed glare. “And you’ve made it very clear that you’re not attracted to me at all and I’ll let you know that the feeling is mutual.”
“Good it’s settled. Happy now?” Caesar asked, grinning at Mingfei.
Mingfei groaned.
“So what’s the plan?” You ask, tucking into the rice. There was both a spoon and chopsticks. You suspect Chu Zihang had prepared this. Mingfei wouldn’t have thought to include alternate utensils.
“This place is called Takamagahara… as you saw… women come here to spend thousands of yen a night just to support their favorite ‘ikemen’ on the stage.”
“Ikemen?”
“Like an idol… a fantasy guy.” Mingfei grumbled. Still neck deep in the water.
“Both Chu Zihang and I were instant hits. There’s no problem for us. However, there’s no place for a female performer.” Caesar taps the ashes into a golden buddha statue that’s holding a bowl to receive them.  “My goal is to have you stay as a planted guest to help coax more money out of the clients.”
“What? That’s your plan?” Mingfei exclaimed. “She’ll be out there in all those … those guys!”
“That’s called ‘shill bidding’.” Chu Zihang turned the page in the newspaper.
“You saw the auction right? I’m sure that piece of meat could have gone for more. If we had someone who can bid the price up, the club makes more money, and there’s no losing it because she’ll be bidding with the club’s own funds.” Caesar explained.
“She’s still too young to be here?” Mingfei continued to object.
“She’s calm enough. Calmer than you in fact.” Caesar sighed. “For that I’m grateful. None of the men here will touch her. It isn’t that kind of place. She’s safe here. I’m not worried.”
“It’s a good idea, Caesar.” You say. “I’ll do my best. I’m not used to cheering that loud though.”
Caesar’s eyes turn sharkish. “Money speaks louder here. Don’t worry.”
You’ve finished the rice already and put down the bowl. “I know you’re upset, Senpai Lu, but you have no say in this matter. What Caesar says goes.”
“Senpai Lu? When did this happen?” Caesar’s eyebrows raise.
You’re not sure how to answer. “He is, isn't he?”
Caesar regards you for a bit but then shrugs. “Thank you for cooperating. We tried to find a hospital but the Hydra had them all blocked off.” Caesar's expression darkened considerably. “No matter how far we traveled, there was just more and more police. Meanwhile, you were bleeding out! Not only did this place offer to help, but they ordered a private doctor for you. If it wasn’t for them, you’d be dead now.”
A cold silence fell over the group and you could almost feel the breeze from the dream of Black Swan Bay and hear Z’s voice.
You had a very close call.
“Z…” You whisper.
“Hm…?” Caesar asked. He’s staring at you with a little concern.
“I… I’m tired. I need to lay down.” You hurry back to the closet and shut the door.

pens:
the planner i got is an appointment calendar with small lines, best served by some kind of fineliner. i have various microns only in black, triplus fineliner, and stabilo point 88. the point 88s are my favorite of these to write with, and have my favorite shade range. it is very important for my organizing scheme to have serious color control! so i have purchased myself the 30 (!) pack of the 88s. the main downside of these is longevity, i think. i have gone through a few of those over the last two years. once i settle into this set, i may by myself some of the triplus fineliners in colors that i’m missing.
the pens i use most in my every day life are papermate flair felt tips. i have gone through a few of these in pinks and reds! i do not want to purchase a new set of these because i am only interested really in the pinks and reds, which i will replace individually whenever i can get to the craft store, along with the dark blue, which i like for work, and maybe a black.
the flairs are slightly too dark and bleeding for my planner now, its pages are thinner than average. going to lean into the neon point 88s, especially the “neon red” (040) shade, which is my second favorite pen of all pens. my other favorite point 88 shades are neon pink (056) and pink (56). i also really like their unique dark shades, like brown (45) and olive green (63) but i think if you want those murky, interesting darks and drabs, triplus fineliner has more and better options.
my very favorite pen of all is the red pentel sign pen. i would like a whole set of these, especially coveting the greens and oranges, but it will wait since i can’t use them in my planner (too inky) and they are somewhat pricy.
as for pens, i also quite like the papermate inkjoy, especially the pink. i use these pretty hard and might just buy a new sampler eventually. i’m no ballpoint hater! this pink pen is one of my signature daily writers, and might be another of my favorite pens :).
as for highlighters, i have a spread of japanese mildliner knockoffs in pastel neon, as well as the following zebra mildliners: smoke blue, mild vermillion, mild magenta, mild brown, mild lemon yellow or mild yellow i forget which, and mild green i think. i also have access at home and at work to various regular highlighters and intend to pick out the very best inky neon yellow one for daily use. i said i did not need more highlighters, but they are kind of important in my daily organizing!, i use them in my planner to block things off, and they’re useful because they are bold without bleeding through much. so i have some holes i could fill. i want to replace the mild gold mildliner i had which dried up, because all the yellows i have right now are very pale. i would also like something that goes with red, i am thinking mild red (which is a dusty dark rose i think) and mild coral pink. i am also drawn to mild gray and mild dark blue, and may just buy the set that has those. and i love mild citrus green. however, i also want a couple of stabilo boss finally! i haven’t decided how to optimize this decision, but they make a beautiful pastel aqua shade, which is not a shade i have because it’s not a shade i ever use, but it would go with all the greens and blues in my new pen set. most of their pastels are too washed out for me. i may get all their original and neon pinks and corals. they seem to have the most lipstick pink shades of anybody!

The first chapter of the Tracy’s doing the Overnight/Live Aboard program. It’s a WIP, and and will take a bit to finish as I’ve got to rewrite a couple of scenes as I found they’re implausible. (There are some minor liberties taken on the program, but I try to have anything that can be visited IRL accurate).
These pics correlate to the opening chapter.
Notes: the berth described in story is not exact to the above: The one I stayed in is the door and by the women’s Head (bathroom, accurate as they also have showers), and the quarters displayed above are part of a tour. Also, my headcanon is Texas was allowed to become an independent republic again in the future.
Enjoy.
••••••
Scott Tracy was in love - again. She had sleek curves, a graceful nose, beautiful blue and gold colorings... and long graceful wings.
He stared at the real Navy Blue A-4 Skyhawk Blue Angel that "flew" on a tall, solid pedestal as though soaring the skies.
Scott could imagine being behind the wheel of the plane, zooming through the air to help serve his country. The swooping, diving and turning were all quite vivid in his head, and he got lost in his imagination.
In fact, Scott was so deep in his dream he didn't notice the world around him trying to get his attention - nor the fact he was grabbed and thrown into a fireman's carry.
It wasn't until he saw grey concrete and rough, seashell laden sand - and someone's shoulders hitting Scott in the gut - he realized he was even moving.
Scott finally was snapped out of his thoughts, aided by the crisp, salty air of the Gulf of Mexico. "Hey! Let me go! Put me down!" said the pilot, gently pounding on the man's left shoulder blade.
A gentle base voice laughed. "Sorry birthday boy but there's plenty more to see than your 'girlfriend'," laughed Virgil as he continued to walk the man a short distance to the front entrance of the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi, the Texas Republic.
The aircraft carrier, commissioned February 17, 1943, was the fifth one by that name. The previous one - CV-2 was sunk in the Coral Sea during World War I, and people chose to rename a newly built carrier from USS Cabot to Lexington in her predecessor's honor.
The nickname Blue Ghost, coined by Tokyo Rose, was created when the Japanese thought she had been sunk four times, but came back.
She was kept in service until formally decommissioned in 1992, and now had been a museum for almost 70 years.
When Texas was allowed to become its own independent constitutional republic again in 2047, the United States allowed the carrier to still be on display in the Gulf as part of a history sharing program.
When Grandma Tracy gave a Live Aboard trip to Scott for his birthday, he suggested they all go. He said it was all he wanted for his birthday - a trip through history of course, experiencing life on an aircraft carrier, but also spending time with his family.
They would be camping in the old crew quarters below deck as part of the program, as well as enjoy meals in the mess hall and see other sites in Corpus Christi, including the Texas State Aquarium and museums in the area.
Even John happily agreed to come down and stay on Earth for the two nights they would spend camping on board the vintage aircraft carrier, so it was for once the entire family.
Admittedly though no one knew how much excitement this trip would bring for the family.
It was already a struggle for them to keep Gordon from dashing off to the visit the marine wildlife and rehabilitation centers at the aquarium. His invite to feed the fish - inside the aquarium in his scuba gear - and the dolphins wasn't until two days later.
Now, just like Scott had done to Gordon over the aquarium, Virgil had to carry him away to get to where they were supposed to go.
"Oh come on Virg - she's not my girlfriend," said Scott, rolling his eyes as he lightly bopped his brother's head.
Virgil scoffed. "Yeah right - you also have to flirt with the TA-4 Skyhawk, T-2C Buckeye, SNJ-5 Texan, KA3B Skywarrior, N3N Yellow Peril, F/A-18 Hornet, 4A Phantom 2..." he said as he then gently set his brother down beside his others. They had their sleeping bags and backpacks bundled together for the two-night stay, packing clothing and other supplies needed.
What many didn't know there was another special "guest" on board - Thunderbird Four. She was boarded late the night before on a special elevator remaining active on the ship. The other 'Birds were ready to fly with EOS' autopilot at a moment's notice from Tracy Island.
While none of the Tracys thought any vehicle would be needed, they wanted to be ready just in case. Kayo was also on standby, staying at a nearby hotel with a helicopter landing on the rooftop to quickly board Shadow.
Scott chuckled in concession. "All right - I'm the 'Bachelor' for a bunch of aviator beauties," he said looking at the ship. "At least I'm not Gordon and want to kiss a sea turtle or otter."
"Hey - that was in my dreams," said Gordon, who then realized it only made things worse. He chuckled. "Yeah... well, I admit I'm wanting to go to the aquarium already, but I've also been looking forward to staying on the Lexington. I finally get to teach you a thing or two about ship life."
Alan chuckled. "Yeah, such as how to get stuck in the brig for hours misbehaving," he teased.
The aquanaut shook his head. "Can't do that bro - the brig is on the hard-hat tour, and Grandma couldn't get us on that one. Filled up."
"Doesn't mean they couldn't put you in the photo op brig," chuckled John, who was sitting on a large ship anchor as he finished his bottled water and snack.
They laughed at the remark as Virgil sat down by his red-headed brother. "How are you feeling bro? Do you need some more water?" he asked seriously.
John shook his head, waving off the remark. He was still suffering space sickness compounded with a rough descent in Thunderbird Five's space elevator two days prior. It had been bad enough he scared his brothers by passing out shortly after they greeted him in the living room.
They all had been worried his "space sickness" would keep him from going, but Virgil and Brains gave him the OK, as long as he ate and drank whatever he was given by the medic or brothers. They already had told him he'd be buying mozzarella sticks - a specialty - at the concession stand the moment after they got settled on board.
"I'm fine, besides - looks like we're about to start our adventure," John said, nodding toward the middle age man walking up to them.
"The Tracy brothers correct - Scott, John, Virgil, Gordon and Alan?" said the man, and the five nodded. "Just wanted to be sure. Your grandmother had already checked in with the girls from the local YMCA. Said though she was going to head to the Wardroom's mess to fix you dinner."
The five brothers gasped in horror, and the man chuckled. "Don't worry - we have people hired to cook the meals. We told her to rest and wait until Scott's birthday celebration - but only bring store bought foods."
Gordon wiped his forehead in a melodramatic fashion. "Whew! for a moment there I was afraid we'd end up getting something that closely resembles SOS."
Alan looked at his older brother, confused. "What's SOS?"
"Well it's also known as Sh..."
Virgil quickly clamped a hand over his seafaring brother's mouth. "Corned beef hash on toast," he said, glaring at Gordon. "SOS is a nickname for the food, and I'd better not hear you say it fully."
Gordon rolled his eyes but conceded.
Alan made a vow to himself to quietly ask his immediate older brother later - out of Virgil's earshot - what the acronym stood for.
The Lexington worker laughed. "Well, now that's settled, let's get started on your Live Aboard program. My name is Jacob Cobalt, and I'll be the ship leader during the next two days aboard the USS Lexington," he said. "Shortly I'll take you aboard so you can unpack in the berthing quarters. You'll be staying in the same area as the Boy Scouts, but have a berth to yourself."
The others nodded. They knew a couple of the workers were informed by the GDF about the need for the five to have their own quarters. Their berth would be slightly smaller than the larger groups, but they would be able to store their IR uniforms without the worry of prying eyes looking through lockers.
Jacob continued. "That said, you'll still have to follow the same rules of the Live Aboard, which means first, you must show proper decorum on this ship. It is a memorial to those who fought and died on it for freedom. Secondly, you have to obey whatever command I say…" he said, smirking before he then changed to a drill instructor tone. "So line up at attention! Backs straight and tuck in your shirt tails!"
The result was a slight comedy of errors when John tripped over a sleeping bag and crashed into Virgil, making both tumble to the ground. As they did they bumped into Gordon's shoulder, making him back into the anchor. Thankfully, all he did was sit on it.
"You have 10 seconds to get in line and shirt tails tucked and get in line," said the ship leader.
Everyone got in line and their tails tucked in by the count of 10 - except Scott.
Jacob clicked his tongue, disappointed. "You of all people - retired Air Force - can't get your shirt tucked in quickly?" he said, motioning Scott to come forward. "Well... I guess you get to give an example of what we do if someone's caught with their shirt untucked."
The other four Tracys laughed. "Oh boy, Flyboy got in trouble," said Gordon, teasing.
Scott gave a feral grin. "Don't think I won't be watching for my chance to get even..." said the eldest as he stood by Jacob.
"I think you'll have plenty of chances Scott…" said Jacob with a smile.
The aquanaut made a show of gulping, to everyone's amusement.
"OK...so what's the penalty?" Scott said, wincing. He hoped it wasn't clean the Head with a toothbrush.
"You have to do 15 pushups - the proper way," said the leader with a chortle.
Scott merely laughed and did as he was told - making sure the final five were single-handed to shush Gordon further.
One he did his 15 pushups, Scott returned to the line and Jacob continued. "OK, now we'll head up to the berthing area. Watch for low overhangs, your step on the ladders, and the lips of the doors so you don't trip over them."
John gave a subtle wince. "I thought I hated gravity before..." he muttered, praying he didn't go flying into a bulkhead not paying attention to the floor. He certainly didn't want to wind up ruining Scott's birthday suffering a concussion.
Virgil put a gentle hand on his brother's shoulder. "It's all right John - we'll make sure you don't fall - down or out," he said knowingly as they gathered their items and headed up the long ramp. They admired the exterior of the Blue Ghost, which included weaponry and lifeboat pods.
At the entrance, they received a blue wristband, showing they were part of the Live Aboard program and could stay past visitor hours before looking around the hangar deck. There was a machine that would simulate a flight simulation for guests while a real simulator lay on display nearby.
Other planes with mannequin workers getting it ready for takeoff, military memorabilia, and mockups for photos graced the area as well.
The Tracys however were heading toward a hatch leading to one of the Heads on the ship. “This way gentlemen,” said Jacob.
John leaned over the railing to look at the ladder of stairs and had a slight case of vertigo. "Oh brother, that's a way down," he muttered.
The youngest brother looked at his brother in sympathy. "You'll be OK John. I'll show you how to get down," said Alan as he started his climb down with his backpack. He faced away from the ladder, making his descent very slow.
When he reached the landing, he turned around, realizing he forgot his sleeping bag. "Um, guys, can you -" said Alan, only to be hit in the face with said item.
Looking up, he saw someone chortling. "Very funny Gordo," said Alan, only to be hit in the face again, this time with Gordon's pillow, then sleeping bag.
"Yeah - it is. You just took the worst way to get down these ladders," said Gordon as he turned around and faced the ladder on his descent. He would've slid down the rails as he did on occasion during his WASP stint, but the rungs were wrapped in rope to add grip safety. Gordon certainly wasn't going to let Alan tease him for rope burns.
Eventually, all five managed to make their way down without much incident. John went last just in case he slipped - and when he did three steps from the bottom, Scott and Virgil caught him. John gave a weak smile in thanks.
Jacob then descended and lead them to a doorway marked "Reserved for Live Aboard Only," and lowered the chain before opening the heavy door.
"OK, here's where you'll be staying the next couple of days. You'll use this head in the evenings after hours, and the showers are behind the wall there," he said, then gestured for them to come inside the quarters.
Inside there was a pool table, old fashioned arcade game that still worked nearly 80 years later, sofas and a ping-pong table. Military memorabilia from the wars the Lexington served in: badges, coats worn by sailors, flags, challenge coins, photos, adorned the walls along with mementos from past guests.
Seeing the youngest look over at the entertainment, the eldest sighed. "We're going to have to keep Alan from the video game, or he'll never go on tours," said Scott, knowing the youngest's fondness for antique games.
Alan rolled his eyes. "I can't play them - I don't have any coins," he said, looking at the game. "Besides - it's that old Donkey Kong game - I defeated it years ago."
The others just shook their head as they followed Jacob through a pair of doors. Turning left, they saw a kitchen area, clean but dark and clearly unused for decades.
Once they descended yet another set of ladders, they arrived at their berth. "Make yourselves at home. You can tour any of the paths until mess in the wardroom at 1800 hours," he said.
The Tracys nodded and entered the room, shivering at the abrupt coldness of the berths compared to the rest of the rooms earlier. It had pale olive green walls, tall, thin lockers for storing their items and bunk shelves complete with a thick foam mattress.
There were three levels to the bunks - beds near the ground, middle and near the top.
"Dibs on the top bunk," squeaked Alan as he quickly walked over to the nearest one.
"Hey - I get one," said Gordon.
Scott laughed. "There's enough for all of us to be on the top bunk if we want," he said, though he was going to stay on the middle bunk.
"Not me - I'm not going to fall out and get a concussion," said John, who wisely chose the lowest bunk, which lay about eight inches off the ground.
They chatted and laughed as they wandered around the quarters, choosing and making up their bunks before stuffing their lockers.
After a few minutes, Gordon and Alan walked around to look at where everyone selected to sleep.
Turning one corner, Alan sniggered at the sight in front of him while Gordon coughed to keep from laughing outright.
"Um, International Rescue, we have a situation," the aquanaut said, though his tone was not as serious as the comment would normally entail.
Still though, Scott went into smother hen mode and walked around to the bunks the youngest duo were at, while John followed, interested himself.
When they reached the others, Scott did all he could to keep a serious face himself.
He barely kept it.
"Um Virgil - what on earth possessed you to try and claim a top bunk yourself?" he asked.
The medic was stuck halfway in and out of the bunk, using his feet on the lower bunk to keep the metal edges from pressing into his gut.
In spite of Virgil's wishes and dreams to finally sleep on a top bunk, his large, muscular frame was just too broad to fit through the space between the safety bar, ladder and bed.
"Looks like Papa Bear forgot that those beds are too small for him," said Gordon, laughing.
"Very funny Squidface... can you guys give me a hand?" muttered Virgil.
The brothers laughed and helped assist Virgil down from the top bunk. The man then wisely chose to do the middleman choice and choose the middle bunk - still higher off the ground, but much more space as no bar was needed. He even double checked by effortlessly pulling himself into the bunk, silencing any further teases from Gordon.
Once they ensured everything was in place, and in the cases of the IR uniforms locked in the lockers, Scott turned and faced the others, smiling. "OK - let's take a journey through time... starting with the flight deck," said Scott.
"Of course - got to go see your girlfriends... FAB birthday boy," teased Virgil, and they headed up toward the hangar deck to go on the bridge/flight deck tour.

Fishkeeping in Asia
youtube
Chinese aquarium markets have the vibe of a silk road bazaar. You rarely see what you and I call fish stores. Instead, you see rows of vendors in underground alleys, each specializing in a specific species or equipment set. Men selling aquascaping rock, women holding up lengths of Malaysian driftwood. You’ve got your discus guys, your cichlid hawkers, and then those who deal in Asian Arowana—the last dragons in China. My girlfriend—Shelly—lives with me in Shenzhen, and she insisted on coming to Honghu Aquarium market. She worried I wouldn’t say “有点贵” forcefully enough. (Translation: “it’s too expensive.” A phrase you must repeat constantly when haggling in China.) I speak Chinese at the level of a semi-intelligent six-year-old. So I was happy to let Shelly do the talking. She has a passion for bargaining, even on things with set prices—like restaurant menus. I once heard her negotiating the price of noodles. Our fishkeeping brethren in China build their tanks upside down. They put the sump on top of the aquarium instead of beneath it. Generally, this sump covers the full length of the hood and doubles as a lid. Many Chinese fish keepers I know live in fear their fish will jump. That heavy sump gives them peace of mind. If a Super Red jumps, that’s a lot of money flopping on the floor. However, many Chinese aquarists lean toward the opposite extreme. They leave their tanks uncovered out of superstition—the fish might need to send them a message one day. Every fish seller in China tells the story of the Malaysian businessman and his Asian arowana. In the story, the man and his fish share a special bond. One day, a business associate invited him to make a risky investment. The day before closing the deal, the arowana jumped out and died on the floor. He believed the fish killed itself to prevent the deal. A few months later the company he’d considered investing in folded. This story has many variations—sometimes the man is Japanese, sometimes it’s a Super Red, but the moral remains the same. The fish saved the man’s business. Here, anything red demands a higher price. Pigeon blood discus, chili reds, red mushroom coral, even arapaima with especially vibrant tails. The color is embedded in China’s cultural psyche. During Spring Festival, people exchange red packets of money and hang red paper cuttings on their doorways. In traditional weddings, Chinese brides don’t wear white, they wear red. When I first moved to China four years ago, I bought an upside-down aquarium. For freshwater, these are better than any Western-style aquarium. The pump pulls water from the bottom, zips it to the mini-sump, and then it flows back in. A clean and efficient system, perfect for a bare bottom tank. However, I wanted to keep coral this time and needed a Western-style setup. Shelly finagled, bargained, and then feigned a walkaway. By the end of it, the vendor offered us a 100-liter system for 800 yuan. (About $125 USD.) It included the tank, light, stand, sump, and pump. I would've preferred a larger aquarium, but I have limited space. Shelly and I live in a studio. Additionally, I prefer glass aquariums. Call me old fashioned, but glass just feels better. But we have to carry it to the fifth floor (no elevator), so I decided acrylic was more pragmatic. I paid while Shelly told the vendor we’d pick it up next week. Later that evening, while ambling Shenzhen’s alleyways, I stumbled into one of those rare standalone fish stores. Except for the labels written in Chinese and the Buddhist shrine in the corner, it reminded me of an American LFS. The owner—who I call Mr. Li—welcomed me into his shop. He soon offered me a great deal on a used 100-liter cube. 300 yuan—about $45—for the tank, stand, sump, and pump. When I heard the price, I wanted it. But I'd already promised my money to another. I thanked Mr. Li and left his store. I tried to forget the cube. It was heavy, impractical, and didn’t come with a light. But it was glass, high-quality, and perfect for a nano reef. Shelly messaged the vendor in Honghu to request a refund. When they returned my money, I went straight to Mr. Li to purchase the cube. That trip became the subject of my first video. Afterward, I collected all the bits and bobs needed for the setup. Mr. Li ordered the light—a Chinese brand called Sunpolar. It’s a fine piece of equipment with this quirky thing called “lighting mode." Hit that button and it flashes like a strobe light. I ordered the rest of my gear off Taobao, China’s equivalent to Amazon. I ordered a Sunsun powerhead, an Aquasyncro protein skimmer, and a heater. I'm unsure what brand —it's in Chinese. People hate on Chinese made stuff, but everything I bought, especially the protein skimmer, was top notch. It fits perfectly in my five-gallon sump. As for the powerhead, you get a lot of flow for $3. When was the last time you got a powerhead that cheap? After filling it, I visited Mr. Li to buy live rock. (I had installed a RO/DI filter under my sink and used a Chinese brand of reef salt.) Mr. Li sold cured rock for about $1.25 a pound. I purchased ten kilos in total. When I told Shelly how much I paid, she said, “just for rocks?”
In my next post, I will go discuss my plans for training the fish, and the coral I bought for the aquarium.

The Great Onmyouji and Ibuki
Tumblr media
Complete tasks for Ibuki, the cat from shikigami dispatch, to unlock rewards. Sounds simple, but it’s a tiny bit more complicated than that. So what it actually is; complete tasks > get bells > fill up a gauge with 10 bells to level up Ibuki’s fondness of you > unlock rewards every time that levels up.
There are two tabs of tasks. 10 “practice” tasks you can probably do while during your dailies. In the first event practice tasks could only be done 25 times, in later events this cap is removed. Then there are 7 weekly tasks of varying difficulties and can be before reset. If you can’t / don’t want to do certain regular tasks you can use 10 jade, for a max of 5 times per day, to refresh it for a new one. Completing 4 regular tasks will also reward you a blue summon ticket, you can receive this reward multiple times.
As for rewards they are 2 sets of them as well; a normal set of 15 items with one at every 2 levels, a special set of 30 items with one at every level and can only be unlocked after spending s-jade. After that’s unlocked you can purchase Ibuki packs which give 10 bells ie increase Ibuki’s fondness by 1 level.
Due to some odd translations in GL, “Break the Shield” = “Do Realm Raid” and “Mystery” = “Do a Mystery Summon”. In chinese and japanese these quest names make much more sense.
Examples of the weekly tasks (bold text will vary depending on difficulty):
Clear the 8th floor of True Orochi twice
Clear the 9th floor of this week’s skin dungeon challenge
Be in the top 15 for an Oumagatoki/Demon Encounter raid boss

Hanafuda Pass

(^ These are based of CN translations)
There are two s-jade packs that can be bought:
