I’ve been down a rabbit hole wondering about medieval jewelry (and if I can reproduce it despite having no metalworking skills, to which the answer is mostly no) lately & I figured I would share the fruits of my museum collection searches for other medievalists/hobbyists/reenactors/nerds.
Jewelry of the 13th Century Anglo/Francosphere
Tumblr media
TL;DR
Metals: 🟨 gold(tone)
Stones: mostly 🔵 cabochon, rarely 💠 simple cut, some carved 🗿 intaglio or cameo
Stone Colors: warm blues, emerald green, purples, burgundies, reds
Materials: enamel, 💎 gemstones (garnet, Ceylon sapphire, ruby/spinel, emerald) or glass paste imitations, ⚪ semi-precious stones (pearl, lapis, jasper, carnelian, coral, turquoise, porphyry)
Settings: bezel (oval and rectangular); ⚜️ intricate metalwork; more visible and textured metal than modern jewelry; more mixtures of stones and colors than modern tastes
Motifs: ◯ round, ✤ quatrefoil, ✙ cross, ✸ star (even numbers of points), ♣ trefoil, ❦ floral, 🐉 animals, 𝕬 inscription
Formats: brooches, ornamented clothing, rings, pendants, circlets, cuffs (rare)
A detailed look:
Some forms of jewelry that were very popular in the Roman Empire and are again today were just not the thing in the middle European Middle Ages. (Earrings, for example, seem to have barely existed. This is partially at least because ears were covered--by coifs and caps, hair, and (for women) braids or the chin strap and fillet/wimple/gorget.) In fact, a lot of the places we would put jewelry against our skin today were covered.
This left some other options:
Jewelry on Clothing
Medallions
Okay, these aren’t jewelry, strictly speaking, but they’re metalwork ornaments associated with a person.
Enamel Mitre Medallions

OA 3437 and OA 3438 Before 1291, Ile de France Louvre, Paris photos (c) Musée du Louvre / Stéphane Maréchalle 2015
Cloisonné and plique enamel over gold and copper, with decorative motifs of trefoils, quatrefoil, and stars in a palette of dark blue and green with accents that may once have been ruby red.
Appliqué Medallion
Tumblr media
# MRR 256 13th c., Limoge Louvre, Paris photo (c) Musée du Louvre 2014
Gilded copper (though most gold is worn off) with quatrefoil champlevé enamel in emerald green, lapis blue, and white or off-white.
Brooches
Perhaps the most prevalent medieval jewelry item in the Anglo & French regions. These were worn at the shoulder for men and breast for women, often anchoring a cloak, or to close the collar. As the ornate fermail and double-ring brooch suggest, these ran the gamut from practical to incredibly decorative and ornate.
Garnet & Silver Gilt Animal Ring Brooch; Green and Blue Glass and Gilt Ring Brooch
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Right, # M.28-1929 13th c., England V&A, London photo © Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Cabochon garnets or carbuncles in the gilded silver brooch (L), perhaps once paired with smaller stones in the eyes of metalwork animals that bite the pin bracket. The right brooch, also silver gilt, sports two glass paste emerald and sapphire "gems" in cabochon. It was probably a lover's token; it reads (in Lombardic-lettered French) IOSV ICI ATI VCI or "jo su[i] ici a t[o]i v[o]ici" which I might translate as "I am here with/belonging to you, look!"
Ruby & Sapphire Ring Brooch; Sapphire, Garnet, and Pearl Fermail
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left, # 6808-1860 1275-1300, England V&A, London photo © Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Right, # OA6287 1250-1300, France Louvre, Paris photo (c) Musée du Louvre
Blogs often claim that stones were only polished en cabochon until the 16th century, and that medieval jewelers couldn't cut gemstones. But this 13th-century gold ring brooch (left) pairs table-cut purple rubies with collet-set cabochon sapphires, and may evidence early medieval gem-cutting or reuse of Roman cut stones. The silver gilt fermail, right, includes pearl beads, garnets and sapphires both cut and cabbed, and one glass paste cabochon. Both are intricately textured, with punchwork (L) and floral metalwork, probably cast and then attached (R).
Double Ring Brooch with Sapphire and Glass "Emeralds"
Tumblr media
# M.26-1993 13th c., England V&A, London photo © Victoria and Albert Museum, London
This gold double brooch is so small they think it was for a woman or child. Central sapphire cab is flanked by glass paste "emeralds" in bezel settings and metalwork featuring two animal heads.
Jewelry on the Body
Rings
Many are probably familiar with the signet ring, used for pressing into sealing wax, which could be intaglio-carved gemstone or metals. There were also a number of decorative and/or talismanic gemstone rings.

Sapphire in gold is the name of the game when it comes to rings in the thirteenth century; even the purple stones on the left are purple sapphires. (Sapphires were said to aid chastity, purity, and the effectiveness of prayer.) For larger stones, the bezel often has claws added (L); the central ring is an example of a full claw setting that modern viewers might find surprisingly tall. Naturalistic flourishes are added (C & R); these might be pre-cast then attached to the base (R).
Pendants
We equate pendants with necklaces, but their medieval applications also included wear as badges, from headpieces, and on horse decorations.

Statue Jewelry
From here, we get into the really ridiculous stuff; the previous categories could be relatively everyday (as much as ornamentation reserved exclusively for the wealthy can be an everyday thing) but the following examples are astonishing displays not necessarily for wear.
"La Couronne" de Vierge et l'Enfant d'ivoire de la Sainte-Chapelle
Tumblr media
# OA 57 B 1250-1300, France Louvre, Paris photo (c) Musée de Louvre
This was not even a crown for a person, but rather for a painted ivory statue of the Virgin Mary, holding her infant son. (Though circlets, even set with stones, were sometimes worn as part of women's head dress.) It's incredibly ornate gold, set with pearls, garnets and rubies, sapphires, and turquoise (?) en cabochon.
Anneau de Saint-Denis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
# MS 85 BIS 1200-1215, France Louvre, Paris photos (c) Musée du Louvre / Daniel Arnaudet 1990
This astonishing piece, which is ring-sized but now displayed as a cuff on an ivory hand, is made of gold and displays every possible gemstone appearance characteristic of the period. The front piece has a central sapphire and is surrounded by quartz with red backing (mimicking ruby/garnet), amethysts, pearls, and sapphires, some set on yellow backing (mimicking turquoise?). Most are en cabochon on this face, but two are faceted and two intaglio. Were this not enough, the three other 'faces' of the ring are set with gems as well, two cameos (probably sapphire and garnet?) and one amethyst intaglio set in ornate gold filigree.

Chicken (Squawkabilly) Mail!
• A few cutely-illustrated books about Pokemon, and one about Spren.
• Several star-themed shirts. A selection of these include:
One with pinpricks of light with tails that zip through a sky with three moons and a red patch of haze, like a scar.
One with outlined constellations that look like symbols built of lines, curves, dots, and circles.
One with a giant ring of dust and a faint light that looks like an eye.
• A lot of socks based on Eevees and Eeveelutions. Some have little ears on them :3
• A necklace with a flower pendant; it’s set with peridot gems.
• A pair of dangling earrings shaped in rather organic patterns, as if the swirling branches of a coral were transmuted into copper.
Svirak-Daughter-None has a letter in her beak. It reads:
“Dear Peridot,
Here is your Discreet Deliberd Delivery! It’s slightly late, but I had put a good bit of work into it. If you feel like any of these things are redundant or don’t suit you, I would not be insulted if you exchanged gifts with another person. Have a wonderful holiday!
Life Before Death,
-@shallahi-and-snowflake”
I love them so much, thank you and I hope you have a wonderful holiday as well

Gemstones for Prosperity, Success, and Wealth in Your Life
Gemstones are often regarded as powerful tools to counteract the negative, unfavorable planetary alignments in an individual's horoscope. In contemporary times, they are increasingly employed as astrological remedies to complement efforts aimed at enhancing health, accumulating wealth, and achieving success.
Each planet is associated with a specific precious gemstone, forming the Navratnas, or the nine gemstones for the nine planets. Wearing the gemstone linked to a particular planet is believed to amplify its positive impact or alleviate its negative effects on an individual's horoscope.
The efficacy of gemstones is attributed to a set of prescribed practices in Vedic astrology, including purification processes, mantras, auspicious timings, days, metals, and specific fingers and hands for wearing the gemstones. The weight of the gemstone varies for each person based on the desired outcome. Additionally, Vedic astrology recommends energizing and cleansing processes, along with daily recitation of mantras to enhance the gemstone's effects.
Navigating the Cosmic Landscape
The Radiant Sun and Ruby Step into the realm of fame, fortune, and authority with the radiant Ruby, a beacon for the Sun's energy. Worn on the right-hand ring finger in gold or copper, the Ruby holds the promise of amplified positive impact. The ritual purification process involves a soak in a concoction of milk, honey, and Ganga Jal, followed by the empowering mantra, "Om Suryaya Namah."
Moon's Tranquil Embrace with Pearl Embrace the calming influence of the Moon with the luminous Pearl, a gemstone renowned for balancing emotions and relationships. Worn on the little finger in silver, the Pearl undergoes a purifying soak in Ganga Jal and cow milk. Recite the mantra "Om Chandraya Namah" for daily empowerment.
Mars' Fierce Energy in Red Coral Harness the dynamic energy of Mars with the fiery Red Coral, symbolizing strength and courage. Worn on the ring finger in gold or copper, this gemstone alleviates the Manglik dosha. Immerse the Red Coral in a blend of Ganga Jal and raw milk for purification, and chant the mantra "Aum Bhaum Bhaumaye Namah" to awaken its power.
Mercury's Intellectual Spark in Emerald Embark on a journey of wisdom and intellect with the enchanting Emerald, Mercury's gemstone. Worn on the little finger in gold, this gem enhances communication skills and earning capabilities. Purify the Emerald in a mix of raw milk and Ganga Jal and infuse it with energy using the mantra "Om Budh Budhaya Namah."
Venus' Allure in the Diamond Experience the epitome of love and beauty with the majestic Diamond, representing Venus. Worn on the middle finger in gold, the Diamond enhances wealth and improves marital relations. Purify this gem in a blend of Ganga Jal, raw milk, and honey, and recite the mantra "Om Shukra Devaya Namah" for daily empowerment.
Jupiter's Abundance with Yellow Sapphire Jupiter, the harbinger of good fortune, is embodied in the Yellow Sapphire. Worn on the index finger in gold, this gemstone attracts recognition, fame, and vitality. Purify the Yellow Sapphire in a mix of honey, raw milk, and Ganga Jal, and recite the mantra "Om Brim Brihaspataaye Namah" for continuous empowerment.
Saturn's Command with Purple Sapphire Bow to the taskmaster, Saturn, with the regal Purple Sapphire. Worn on the middle finger in silver, this gemstone enhances positive results and brings wealth. Purify the Purple Sapphire in a blend of raw milk and Ganga Jal and chant the mantra "Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah" daily for empowerment.
Rahu's Enigma in Hessonite Navigate the mysterious Rahu with the protective Hessonite. Worn on the middle finger in silver, this gemstone guards against malefic influences. Purify the Hessonite in a mix of honey, raw milk, and Ganga Jal, and recite the mantra "Om Ram Rahave Namah" daily for energizing vibes.
Ketu's Shield in Cats Eye Stone Embrace the enigmatic Ketu with the protective Cats Eye Stone. Worn on the right-hand middle finger in a silver ring, this gemstone safeguards against loss and ill tidings. Purify the Cats Eye Stone in a blend of honey, raw milk, and Ganga Jal, and recite the mantra "Om Kem Ketave Namah" daily for purification and empowerment.
Conclusion: Nurturing Your Gemstone Allies
Remember, the key to unlocking the full potential of these gemstones lies not only in their mystical properties but in your commitment to personal growth. Get gemstone recommendations based on your kundli for improved luck and success. While gemstones pave the way for luck, success, and wealth, your efforts and initiatives play an integral role. Consult with an astrologer to embark on a personalized journey, unveiling the gemstone that aligns perfectly with your cosmic blueprint. As you wear these gems, cleanse and purify them weekly to ensure they radiate positive energy, guiding and supporting you on your path to prosperity.

Cedar, Sugar, Pearls, and Glass (and Frogs)
Corobel starts turn 9 with 15 points: 10 (roll) + 3 (nonhoarding) + 2 (left over)
In the mythologies of the Occident, there are three chief etiologies for the Night-Singers.
That the Moon drew them from the marshes as it draws the tides, either naturally or to serve one of the Sky’s many inscrutable purposes.
That the Sky heard the wind sing through creaking trees in an Occidental valley, and, to preserve the sound, trapped it in a clutch of nearby frogs—but the power of the song was such that it bestowed upon them a swift and changeable intelligence.
That the Gods created them to serve the Sun-Divers.
In all of these are implicated the machinations of a lunar spirit called the Coryphaeus, or the Beast of Faces, generally appearing as a three-headed peacock enthroned in the silvered Court of the Two Skies since the world’s beginning—doling out the heartbeats of mortals, tracking the movements and politics of the stars, and keeping the gate to the Mirror-Halls of the Moon’s interior.
Whatever their origins, the Night-Singers are the main population of the marshy northwest of the Occident, to whose climate they are far more suited than humanoids; here, they live in chiefdoms centered around their excessively large elders. In other areas of the Occident, they comprise from 5% to 20% of the population, often forming “shadow settlements” upstream of humanoid ones. Their social situation is variable and sometimes degraded.
Some characteristics of the Night-Singers:
Being suited to coastal marshes as well as inland waters, they have some tolerance for salt water, though they will die if immersed in it for longer than a few minutes at a time.
Lay clutches of up to a dozen eggs on land, though tadpoles still require water. Tadpole mortality is quite high.
Can hold their breath for a very long time, though their size prevents them from entirely relying on breathing through their skin.
Must periodically immerse themselves or suffer serious health consequences.
Prone to accidents of metamorphosis—bicephaly, polydactyly, supernumerary limbs and eyes.
Have a heightened ability to recover from wounds, to the point of regrowing limbs.
Reputed to be able to change sex at will.
They tend to be seen as emotionally reserved, cold, mysterious, mercurial, and dispassionate. Finally, they have a great love for singing and dancing, and they often manage these things even in their sleep.

Meanwhile, along the coasts of the Pearl Sea, Occidental galleys flit. Where they encounter indigenous populations, in the north and northeast. they trade with silver and fight with iron. On the well-defended promontories and the well-drained near-coastal highlands, they built their colonies, entrepôts, temples, ringed with stout walls and watched by blindfolded priests.
The lands bring forth cedar, tea, wine, cacao, coffee, rich yields of manioc and sugarcane, cinnamon and sky-flower, copper and iron, cotton and flax, pearls and coral. Every island, mountain, river, and fishing-ground yields up its bounty in tribute, and, from the forests and the deserts, bands of snake-eyed hunters bend to lug great weights of fine pelts and wondrous feathers down to the sunlit sea. With the many-shaped inhabitants of the deep, the Occidentals carry on a slow and distant trade, leaving offerings on beaches to be taken at the high tide and replaced with oceanic riches.
The great wheel of extraction and exchange curls itself around rainy lands and dry, and its spokes pierce the hearts of men, and more and more they strain to turn it, and it will grind until the world is done.
Further north, where the Two Rivers cut through desert, Occidental colonists establish the beginnings of an urban civilization, though none of the city-states are so far of global prominence.
Most of these Occidentals come from the northern Tamarisk Country and the Nephrite Isles; though the majority are Sun-Divers, some are humans and Night-Singers.
Create Avatar (-7): The Coryphaeus turns its gaze upon the world of mortals.
Command Avatar to Create Race (-1): The Coryphaeus creates the Night-Singers in the marshes and rivers of the Occident.
Command Race (-4): The Occidentals colonize the coasts of the Pearl Sea and the lower extent of the Two Rivers.
Command Avatar to Advance Civilization (-1): The Oracles of the Great Flowering Tree ensure that the Occident, and bright-skied Azimuth in particular, will always reign supreme in divination and prophecy.
[I suppose this Command Race is more of a Command Civilization.]
