The stems of Corylus avellana 'Contorta' (corkscrew hazel, Harry Lauder's walking stick) provide dynamic winter interest. The branches are strongly twisted and create a large shrub which is even more impressive if the finer stems are pruned to reveal the structure. The leaves have a slightly twisted and contorted appearance with catkins being produced on bare twigs in the spring.

Flowering from late autumn through to the spring Viburnum farreri (Farrer viburnum) fills the air with scent. This is a large, upright deciduous shrub which provides a display of autumn colour before the clusters of flowers open.

Finding beauty in the midst of winter is all in the mind of the individual. It's all a part of my seasonal challenge to pay attention to everything around me in the garden. The gift this weekend was not under the tree...it was the Edgeworthia chrysantha that caught my eye. In the back of this DC urban garden, this leafless shrub quietly stood guard. With buds hanging like living ornaments, I marveled at how the tight buds dangled in the Nordic like temperatures. Theoretically there should be twenty four Paperwhites blooming in my garden at the moment, because that is how many I had planted last autumn. The reality is that there is only one that has an open flower right now. Why, you are asking? Because it was so warm here in Austin at the end of autumn and the beginning of winter that most of them bloomed in December. Well, that makes this one very precious so I wanted to share it with you.
