a big part of tsubasa reservoir chronicle is the fact that none of the main characters are using their real names (which I think can be also attributed to fei wang as he’s presumably an extension of clow, which is Pretty Neat). in general deception is a major aspect of the storyline but ultimately what I’ve always taken away from trc is that identity does not equate to a name. over and over again we watch these characters fall in love with each other (in a platonic and romantic sense) even though NONE of them are *truly* real, because who they are is made up of each other. All six protagonists (if you count c!sakura/c!syaoran as being meaningfully separate which. duh) find their meaning and identity NOT through the names they are Given (what has been placed upon them) but through their experiences being surrounded by other people, because ultimately what all these characters need to Learn is that they above all else are people capable of both love and more importantly Change. They are all by the end made up of the memories they hold with each other.

Prompt: TRC AU where C!Syaoran & R!Syaoran are twin bros, with the former as the younger one & the latter as the older one. In this AU, C!Syaoran is gifted with super strength (like Disney's Hercules from the 1997 animated film of the same name & Luisa from "Encanto"). And like any sibling, R!Syaoran is initially envious of his lil bro's gift. But over time, he grew to accept the fact that he's giftless & eventually, he grew protective of his younger bro because the people around them have overwhelmingly negative response to his twin bro's power. They would call C!Syaoran derogatory names, whispering to each other whenever he's passing by, laughing behind his back, etc. This made him self-conscious about himself & as a result, his self-esteem plummeted to rock bottom. Thankfully, R!Syaoran is there to provide him any comfort, encouragement & reassurance. But most of all, they've got each other's back.
It looks like these writing prompts really are going to take me through the rest of my semester. There are still two more after this. I hope to finish them up in the next month.
So that is a lot of information there. And I was, admittingly, stumped on this one for a little bit, but I remembered I had in my mind a Spiderman fic that had kind of similar vibes. So I borrowed a setting from it. For this, I had no idea how to refer to these boys. In the end I’m going with the younger being Li and the older being Syaoran, because that is the only thing I could think of. So in this AU their last names are something else. Clow maybe…or Reed. Anyway. Since you have provided the backstory, I don’t go into that. The younger was born with powers and the older one wasn’t. This turns out to be a short snapshot into their lives.
EDIT: I was about to post this and tumblr ate it! I had made corrections directly on the post too. I’m so frustrated!
Word count ~1020 (I almost stayed under 1k this time!)
Title: Burdens
Syaoran was careful not to slam the door to their shared room. Just like he had been careful when entering the home not to be too loud, not to be too noticed. He was used to fading into the background and, while he used to resent it, he now found it to be an advantage. As he had been informed multiple times, he was a guest in this house, and he was not allowed to be disruptive. His grandfather permitted him and his brother to stay there because. Well. Because it was the only option. They had nowhere else to go. They could not get kicked out of another home.
Though. That wasn’t quite right. Their mother had been forced to send Li away. The bullying had gotten out of hand and Li was too strong, too angry and too much of everything. So their mother made plans to send his younger brother to the country, to live with their grandfather and try to start over. A new house. A new school. A new life.
Alone.
Syaoran couldn’t let it happen. He had insisted on going as well. Because, despite everything, Li was still his younger brother. And he was still responsible for him. Not that being older by 7 minutes really counted for much, but Syaoran had found his role early on in their childhood. He was the calmer one, the more responsible one. He had always been the older brother and he always would be.
Syaoran moved through their small room, walking on the balls of his feet, quietly listening. Li was in his bed, blanket pulled over his face and breathing a little too harshly to not be trying not to cry.  Syaoran sighed and slipped to the floor, his back pressed against the mattress. He stared out their window and waited.
The course breathing slowed, and Li grew very still. Like when they were little kids and spent late nights hiding from the monsters in the closet.
If you stay quiet and don’t move, they won’t hurt you.
Syaoran shook his head at the memory. Li had ended up punching a hole in the closet door at one point and their mother had been livid.
“You can’t keep doing this,” Syaoran whispered after the silence had dragged on too long. The blanket pile behind him shifted and Li gave a scoff that sounded too weepy to be true annoyance. Syaoran leaned his head back on the mattress. “If you want our classmates to like you, you can’t keep beating them up.”
The blanket was shoved away.
“I did not beat anyone up,” Li bit out.
“You can’t threaten to beat them up, especially not a little girl.” Syaoran turned to meet his brother’s eyes, but Li looked away. He pulled the blanket up again, stopping short of covering his face with it.
“She had powers too,” Li muttered into soft fabric. Syaoran sighed.
“You can’t threaten to beat up kids even if they have powers too.”
“I didn’t threaten to beat her up!” Li snapped the blanket over his head. Syaoran turned and carefully, carefully pulled the blanket down.
“Tell me then?” Syaoran whispered once he caught his brother’s eyes. The older boy folded his arms on the mattress and waited. Li wrinkled his nose under the scrutiny, but he didn’t turn away. He pulled at the blanket’s edge and studied the worn threads straining under his grip.
“I thought she was strong too,” he finally whispered. “I didn’t mean to scare her. I told her to tell me what she could do. I just thought… she was like me.”
It had been hard growing up with a twin who had a gift of strength, while Syaoran had nothing. His lack of special abilities had been difficult on him when he was little, but he realized it was hard on Li too. Having strength that nobody could match. Not being able to play with others unless he was very, very careful. Scorned and shouted at if someone did get hurt when he was around.
 It must have been lonely.
Syaoran tapped his fingers on the mattress, dragging his brother’s attention from the loose threads he was pulling from the blanket.
“Someday,” he cleared his throat. “Someday, you’ll find someone who can match you. And you’ll either be best friends or mortal enemies. I hope it’s the former.” Syaoran lightly flicked his brother’s ear before turning to sit comfortably on the floor again.
The room went quiet. Syaoran watched the light from the window dim with the setting sun, casting an orange glow throughout their room. The shadows deepened around them and Li’s gentle fingers brushed across his brother’s shoulder. When they were young, Li had broken his brother’s arm. Their parents didn’t let him forget it. Their mom failed to remember the speeding truck that Li had pulled Syaoran away from. To be saved from the truck’s path and hurt by his brother’s hands in the same moment… it had been a frightening experience. He had cried a lot that day. His parents had seen his pain, but they had not seen Li’s. That was the first time Li had really hurt someone without meaning to and it left him with a haunted look on his face.
Syaoran would not forget that his brother saved his life that day. And he would not forget how hard Li cried when his older brother’s arm twisted the wrong way in his hands.
“You think there will be someone like that?” Li whispered, almost too quiet to hear.
“Yes,” Syaoran answered without hesitating. “And until then, you have me at least.” He turned and grinned. “I’ll always be your older brother.”
No matter where they got sent, no matter how the others whispered about Li, they would always be brothers.
Li let the corner of his mouth twitch up.
“Thank you.”
Syaoran ruffled his hair and Li batted him away gently.
“You have me too,” Li whispered. Syaoran grinned.
“I know, I know.”
If you stay quiet and don’t move, they won’t hurt you.
I’ll protect you.

I disappear for one single day to deal with irl stuff and miss your birthday??? Unbelievable, happy belated birthday!!
I get what u mean about aus sometimes just being about the vibes, I think why I'm so hung up on tomoyo in particular (other than my brain being a nightmare that wants No Holes in The Story) is I'm mentally fiddling with a kurogane ctechno's backstory to keep the anarchism in play, so already the role of tomoyo has gotta be a bit different. And because of that my brain wants to figure out All the changes, and what those would mean for c!techno in this au. Rotating him in my head and demanding to know who his catalyst is and all that. Who looked at a violent c!techno in this au and said "we're gonna get you some standards for killing. And also make you a pawn in multiverse chess. Have fun!"
Yuuko cgeorge would definitely be a vibe, and it's easy to make cdream feiwong reed work (the atrocities! The holding onto the past! He would be more than willing), but I think what I like so much about the reverse is where the base motivations lay? Feiwong reed is clinging onto a single person at cost of everything else. Which reads as very similar to c!dream in canon clinging onto a version of the world that no longer exists, but phrase that another way: his base motivation lies in the world being changed in a way he views as negative, and trying to prevent that change/bring it back to its previous state where its already been changed. Which is also what yuuko is doing! It's just that we view yuuko as being in the right because she's. You know. Preventing the collapse of the multiverse. Doing less atrocities. It would be a characterization of c!dream that would borrow a bit more heavily from early days smp I think, but with the pragmatism and bastard energy of current lore. Or maybe not even that, maybe it's just a question of, who does cdream become if his allegiance is no longer happy memories of an 8 person server of friends, but instead the smooth functioning of a multiverse? What is he like if he has different eggs (<- cursed metaphor but whatever it gets the point across)
Also with the whole plot point of feiwong reed being theorized to be like... a fragment of Clow formed entirely from the wish to keep yuuko alive, I think it would be neat to put an earlier days, somewhat kinder and more friendly cdream up against a late days cgeorge who has become so single minded in focus, who cant tolerate the world as it currently exists. To have cdream remembering an early days cgeorge while dealing with the current cgeorge. And yet, the things one could do with cdream and dreamxd if we go the cgeorge is yuuko route...
Oh I figured out my hang up, it's that I can picture a world where cdream chooses the world over cgeorge, especially if cgeorge has become antagonistic to said world, but I struggle to picture a world where cgeorge wouldn't sacrifice the world to keep cdream. However, I also am not a cgeorge or c!dnf scholar, so I'm very open to being told I'm wrong on this bit
yeah trc is especially difficult to cast full aus for considering that there are so many characters that are all so intertwined and it's like, sometimes you just gotta take a character concept and strip it down and run LMAO. like in my ffx au ctubbo's role is most analogous to rikku's role in the game. they are not similar in vibe in the least, but it Works okay i PROMISE.
the thing that is off to me about cgeorge as feiwong is like. cgeorge is so profoundly defined by apathy and inaction? and even in his stream about destroying everything and becoming a god, it's not out of some desperate drive towards an end goal, if anything it's the complete opposite. this is cgeorge essentially throwing in the towel, he's giving up on the entire world but he's also decided to make it the whole world's problem in the process. if his dream hadn't literally handed him the tools for the job, he probably wouldn't have gone on nearly such a rampage; think about how quickly he gave up mining down his statue: "it's such a chore to even destroy myself". that's not to say cgeorge is incapable of fighting for things, but his coping mechanism of choice is not to dig in his heels or press onwards, but instead is to just. give up. disengage. and his constant dreaming just enhances that sense of passiveness.
so yeah i feel like cgeorge in a yuuko-esque role where he's like. trapped in stasis. forced to inaction in some ways. and is trying to fix things to an extent but is limited in his scope just by the nature of his existence? yeah. idk. but also i will confess that some of the finer details of yuuko's stuff does escape me as it has been a Hot Minute since i've reread so i could be bullshitting here LOL. also i think that if cdream had to play multidimensional chess and create a 9000 step plan to ruin lives across the whole of reality all for cgeorge's sake that he would 100% do it in a heartbeat and that arguably you could interpret his actions in canon to be him doing just that, so there's that as well

It's been 23156789 years after the whole TRC divide by zero, chicken-egg theory that I still confuse had the timeline was not fucked up, who would be R!Syaoran's real parents.
And I just realize that R!Syaoran's parents would have been the Li Clan possibly Li Yelan (if it's still the same like CCS). But due to the C!Syaoran change the time and then with C!Sakura make their own choice, they both fucked it up. The C!Syaoran become the son of the-should-be R!Syaoran's parents. Therefore the whole mess
But why this timeline was not fixed when they fixed the time loop??? Bcs C!Syaoran's existence was already in there. He had already become the son of the Li Clan. He had already been "humanize". So C!Syaoran was a clone but the same time was also a human (someone already gave birth to him, people had memories of him etc)
Why not fixed the time by returning before C!Syaoran and C!Sakura exist. Because turning back time would just ruin their own time loop again. And even if it's not, C!Syaoran and C!Sakura would've existed anyway (due to Butt Chin) and therefore make the same choice.
The only way to fixed the time with turning back is to turn back before Clow Reed had a small thought to make Yuuko stay. With this, Yuuko would have been died, Butt Chin would have not existed neither do C!Syaoran and C!Sakura. Watanuki also has a high chance of not existed. Kurogane's mother would have not be killed therefore his father should have not died on that day too. Fay might have not born twin (I forgot about this, the details are murky)
Idk tho, it's just a theory. I might be wrong

Ok i'll go for this. Yuuko for the headcanon game
Thank you! I know I just did Yuuko but honestly I'll take any opportunity to talk about my favorite character, so I will be sending more headcanons your way!
Headcanon A:  realistic
Yuuko can speak multiple languages, as well as Old Japanese, Classical Chinese, and Old Korean. She can also speak various languages from other dimensions, such as Fai's and Kurogane's languages, as well as the language from Clow Country.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
I am convinced that if she went to a mahjong parlor she would be an absolute hit. Yuuko absolutely has a fanbase of 60 year olds in a rundown cafe that probably should have been condemned five years ago but the locals wouldn't have it. She would dazzle the slightly over middle aged crowd.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
Because Yuuko in relegated mostly to her shop and the area around it she didn't know of Clow's death until months, possibly years, after it happened. It really sparked a feeling of isolation in her, that the rest of the world could move on while she could not. She was robbed of the peace that Clow was given, and yet it was only because he loved her so very much. I think she must have been very quiet afterwards, possibly even becoming sharper, more distant, more willing to be cruel in her teasing. All because she was coming to terms with just how monumental her status as an outcast from death meant.
(And this is before becoming aware of certified ass FWR - if this is contradicted in later TRC it's because I'm not done haha...)
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
Yuuko wanted a cat familiar because she saw it in pop culture media so often but when she tried to start by keeping a fish and she had to give it away to the fortune teller lady because she almost killed it she realized that a Mokona and two soulless children was probably enough.

Gimme those Sakura headcanons
I’ll assume you’re asking about TRC (we have so many Sakuras please specify which angel you want to hear about)
Headcanon A:  realistic  – When the clones are reborn and give birth to Tsubasa Li we’re told that Sakura, for some reason, is weak due to illness, but I think she actually is prone to “fainting spells” that are left over from the price Syaoran paid to Yuuko. With all of those memories she still has she probably keeps almost remembering her childhood with Syaoran in Clow and passing out, making people think she’s come down with some sort of illness. She’s not sick at all though, she just can’t break the deal Syaoran made with Yuuko.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious – Sakura laments to Kurogane sometimes about how Syaoran isn’t “picking up what she’s putting down” during moments where she manages to pluck up enough courage to try and be a bit forward and flirt with him. Kurogane listens understandingly, occasionally chiming in with an exasperated “I know exactly how you feel, Princess.”
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends – Because of the paradox and the near death event in TWC Sakura is the only clone with the ability to actually be reborn, while c!Syaoran can regain an existence he’ll be dead. She agrees in order to spare Tsubasa and Kimihiro from a life in what is basically purgatory and flees Clow to travel with Fai and Kurogane.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own – Kurogane teaches her how to use a sword in Outo as well once they start to realize that things are strange because ain’t no daughter of his gonna be found defenseless no sir. Young lady is gonna take this blade and she’s gonna know how to use it. Am I bitter? Maybe just a little but hey fuck you.

Re: your Clear Cards/TRC meta. If the original staff went to Yuko, it means the staff now is in Wateneki's possession. Wateneki, C!Sayoran and C!Sakura's universe repayment baby (the reason why they gave the staff to Yuko in first place too, if i'm not wrong, was to make it possible to Original Syaoran and Watanuki to coexist). Very mind-blowing, very CLAMP to have all this weird TRC backstory in Clear Cards.
You know, I was going to go into Yuko dying and Watanuki taking her place and then I looked at my post and thought 'is this not a holy mess already'.
But yes, you're 1000% right. Sakura Kinomoto's staff now belongs to Watanuki. Who, in another universe, is hers and Syaoran's son (after time was reset and he 'replaced' Original Syaoran as their son).
Watanuki, who is then also a descendant of Clow Reed and looks an awful look like him and honestly I'm pretty sure the endgame for xxxHolic is going to be Watanuki is Clow Reed, and it was an origin story all along.
All of this. All of this is woven into the background of Clear Card. THANKS, CLAMP, I BOTH LOVE AND HATE IT.

actually okay I just had a thought. If there is only one Clow Reed across dimensions, how does that play into his descendants? His blood runs through Syaoran CCS and also R!Syaoran and C!Syaoran/Tsubasa of TRC and Watanuki(Syaoran), so that technically makes them related in that familial sense, however they are supposed to be alternate selves of each other from different dimensions, so..?

I come back with more questions, but I see you talking about CCS, have you finished that? I'm super curious on your thoughts with how it somewhat (I think at least with Clow Reed and Yuuko) ties into xxxholic? And also wondering which other Clamp works you've read? I'd love to talk about them!
Hello!
I am those most unfortunate people who is involved with a lot of semi-expensive fandoms, and thus sometimes my budget is a bit thinned. For example I just bought a lot of Kamisama Kiss volumes (one of the best romances ever written no regrets) and I'm still hoping to one day collect all the Higurashi and Umineko manga volumes, as well as all CLAMP's works localized into English.
I have read only xxxHolic in its entirety, though I'm also starting xxxHolic Rei (waiting for volume 2 to be in stock) and have read some TRC (3 omnibuses in) and maybe the first two chapters of CCS.
I have however seen CCS in its entirety, as well as Clear Card. So at least there's something.
As for other works I've watched Blood C and Chobits and that's basically it. Unless you count Code Geass lol. I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to CLAMP, though I do plan on getting X/1999 next in terms of manga volumes.
Also I made an entire post on how xxxHolic and CCS might be connected! Here it is! Note that since I haven't finished TRC or read the CCS manga, which is more explicit in Clow's reincarnation and all that in regards to Eriol and Sakura's dad, it's not the best, and I do plan on rewriting it eventually. Safe to say though the worlds are definitely connected somehow. And I'm kinda wondering if Clear Card, or any future xxxHolic or TRC content will try to make those ties more explicit.
And I'd love to talk about CLAMP's other works! It's just a pity I haven't read many of them. But don't worry! You won't be able to shake me so easily CLAMP, I'll have read all of you eventually then... watch out! Or something haha
