BNHA 390 - Shoto Todoroki: Rising - Thoughts
I'm super-late with this, but the chapter dropped in the middle of my work month from hell. In the end, it was also lucky, because I was too busy to read the fandom reactions / discourse and got the space to process it alone.
I have to say that naysayers calling it "dragging" (when in reality, the whole thing is 3 tiny chapters) or "rushed" are both wrong. I think HK wrote exactly what he wanted to write, but whatever it was, it was never going to satisfy everyone.
It's enough to look at the Chapter number and title to know how much he cares:
190 - His Start (Endeavor's triumph)
290- Dabi's Dance (Dabi's big moment)
390 - Shoto Todoroki: Rising - it's finally Shoto's moment to shine.
But not only that:
Ch 39 - Shoto Todoroki: Origin
Ch 390 - Shoto Todoroki: Rising
Also, 39 can be read as "3-San 9-Kyyu" -> Thank You and chapter 390 will be included in Vol 39 - the "Thank you" volume.
Add to that the first words spoken by Shouto in his Rising chapter, and guess what... It is:
Tumblr media
"Thank you, Iida."
Speaking of Iida, in advance I really didn't see him being a part of the Todoroki showdown, but in hindsight it makes a lot of sense. Iida is the first ally Shouto made by saving him and inspiring him, they had great foiling around their families since their start. Plus, Iida being there is like all of Class A being there - he's the president after all.
And not only that - Iida who was introduced as diligently kicking down robots for entrance exam points, even though in his heart he knew what the right thing to do was grew into the person he wanted to be, also thanks to Shouto. Someone who will put supporting his friend both emotionally and in practical ways first, use his speed to save people without hesitation and through this making a huge impact.
Their combo breaks the sound barrier - a feat that's really reaching the OFA realm is almost an afterthought - but that's not point, it's just the HOW they get to do what's right. Tsukauchi also gives a little nod to All Might - reminding us that he's behind this - putting his faith in Shouto and Iida - his students - that they can do this.
Tumblr media
The way Shouto goes flying (probably carried by the momentum), as Iida yells his parting words - for Shouto to become who he wants to be - reminds me of a cat landing on his feet.
Tumblr media
I love this sequence of Shouto hitting the ground and then taking that step that's so big that it doesn't even fit in the panel. It's far from his first step - he's been taking them again and again since his first visit to Rei. And despite all the hurt, disappointment, let-down - Shouto is not giving up on his family.
I think a lot of people loved Shouto's letter to Rei. It's endearing in its clumsy awkward way. As a quick reminder, Shouto started to write these letters after he failed the Licensing Exam and couldn't visit Rei, because his weekends were taken up with the remedial classes. It's the time when his unprocessed trauma prevents him from being a hero - even though almost everyone else passes.
The letter clearly shows that Shouto understands that him failing the exam has nothing to do with his fighting ability and everything to do with his lacking communication skills, so he's determined to improve. It's also the period where he has to step out of the safety net that Midoriya and Iida gave him, as he spends a lot of time with Bakugou.
Tumblr media
And it's interesting that after Ch 352 focuses a lot on Class A as a source of reassurance for Shouto, his rising chapter focuses on how he learns healthy conflict. Because when it comes down to it, in the Todoroki family every conflict is either shut down (like separating the kids), or is blown out of proportion, like Enji abusing Rei.
But Shouto grows from the conflicts - he learns that these can help clear the air and be the source of positive change. Bakugou is prominently featured in these memories, reminding us how much both Shouto and him learnt about these clashes and how they came to understand each other better (which furthered both of their storylines).
Shouto wants to be like his friends - caring, outward looking, able to feel empathy and righteous anger.
Tumblr media
Notice also the way the speech bubbles are placed. Who he wants to be above Rei, Fuyumi and Natsuo. And the "not easy, but I'm trying" above Endeavor and Touya as a tie-back to how being "Endeavor's son, Dabi's brother" impacts how people perceive Shouto.
And the way he runs - so desperate, giving it his all - ties back to all the times he was late before.
When Shouto enters the battlefield, it's the first time the Todoroki family shares a panel since Touya attacked baby Shouto. The mismanagement of fire from that time resulted in this - Touya turning into a live nuke about to explode and take everyone with him - the whole family and the innocent by-standers alike.
Tumblr media
I already talked about Touya's POV - but it's worth mentioning that his line "It was so simple", circles back too to Shouto in the Stain arc.
It's difficult to see even the simple things when you yourself aren't seen. Shouto needed Midoriya to see him, to confront him, to call him out on his goals to realize that he gets to decide who he wants to be. And Touya needed his family to see him, to confront him also to be able to see Shouto not as some monster masterpiece, but as a crying little boy, fighting for his family.
And being finally able to see all of his family makes Touya realize he doesn't want to die yet, that there are things he still wants to say.
Tumblr media
I don't mind that Shouto uses Great Glacial Aegir again. It's the move he made to save Touya, and it's honestly a perfect culmination of Shouto arc. Also this Glacial Aegir is a completely different scale than the previous one - enough to stop a nuke. But again - this is not about
Having it in play both times shows that Shouto did his best the first time around too, but couldn't do it because they weren't together. Because Touya's Phosphor is the endpoint of all the hurt and rage and jealousy piling up and simmering inside Touya and Shouto's Phosphor is all the hard work of healing and reconciliation and processing trauma. In the end, the power of healing overcomes the power of rage, it lights a light within the fiery core of Touya's nuke.
Shouto brings relief to both his family and the people caught in blast range. His name is not chanted by civilians, I doubt if he was even recognized by anyone, other than his dedicated fanbase of 3 kids. But it's a start. And more importantly he's doing what he wants - bringing reassurance to others while still being there for his family.
Tumblr media
And just like in his Origin chapter, the mist lifts and Shouto is standing and I love this panel - such a good Shouto-like line.
Tumblr media
He's not making fancy speeches - that's not his style - it's all clumsy but sincere. He starts by acknowledging Rei, Natsuo and Fuyumi - how their intervention mattered (maybe their ice was needed - but even if it didn't, them showing up meant Endeavor couldn't go through his murder-suicide plan and they brought precious seconds for Shouto to arrive).
Tumblr media
Then Shouto addresses Touya framing this whole thing not as some ideological fight between villains and heroes, but a ridiculously powerful family fight between two brothers. And even as he's technically the winner, he acknowledges Touya's fire as exactly what Endeavor always wanted from Shouto.
Tumblr media
His last line is heartbreaking and heartfelt, gracious and cruel at the same time - as it's right above Endeavor. Knowing Shouto it's just blunt and factual. He's not Endeavor masterpiece. He didn't go the way his father wanted and became who he wanted to be. Someone whose power doesn't separate him from his family, but rather uses his power, his entire being to bring them together - so they can work out their issues.
And I love that this starts with Natsuo - who was a source of honest confrontation in the family - kind of ignoring Touya's ranting as he asks him "what now?". Because this was the comedown from the tantrum of the century. And it's true that Touya and Endeavor dragged the whole family into it. They are all in hell. But they are all together.
Tumblr media
And FINALLY - too late, Endeavor says what he should have / could have said back during the Touya reveal, or when they met again on the battlefield.
Tumblr media
It's so little, so inadequate, so late, but it still matters, as evidenced by Touya's hollow eyes coming back into focus. And Enji does something simple and fatherlike, as he drags himself over to Touya to warm him as he keeps freezing from the inside. So simple. Such a small thing.
Tumblr media
And finally the dam breaks loose and Touya can say what he wanted to say - express his hurt not via a nuke but verbal confrontation. And we see melting ice running down his face as the symbol of the tears he hasn't been able to shed for a decade, while Endeavor encourages him to let it all out.
Not healing yet - but anger - it's a necessary step in processing grief over what they could have had.
And Endeavor finally apologizes properly to everyone in the family - but when he gets to Shouto, he's at loss what to say either because Shouto is passing out or because where do you even start. Or maybe both. It's sad and it feels empty, and I think that's exactly how it's supposed to feel. Because getting to know all of the Todoroki family we know it didn't have to be this way - they all have capacity for goodness and they are all capable of caring for their family.
And in the end, Shouto, the family hero is still in the middle all alone - with no hugs or comfort, and not even a thanks - after he gave every last bit of himself to save the people who hurt him the most from the almost inevitable tragedy.
Tumblr media
It's not a dark ending, nor is it a happy ending. It's sad and raw and the damage is real; both in terms of Touya's and Enji's charred body, and also all the trauma that has been exposed during this confrontation. A big flashy move can only take you so far, the real work - clawing their way out of hell starts now.
But for the moment everyone is alive, and sometimes that's good enough.
I don't know if this is how it ends for Shouto - I don't think so. We've had lots of clues that him becoming the family hero is the hurdle he has to overcome to stand with his classmates.
I still think that in the end we'll get an ending with the whole class coming to Deku - a Class A ending. But for now, Shouto is out for the count and I'm sure it will be a long wait. So strap in.
In the end, I hope we will see him smile - if not in the endgame, maybe the epilogue. He deserves it.
His Rising chapter gave us a glimpse of who he's grown into, what his values are as a person and as a hero. And I think for everyone who was worried that Shouto's endgame would be an acceptance of Endeavor, it is clear now that he's on his own path deciding for himself his own priorities and way of doing things.
And the fact that he didn't break away is because that's who he decided to be. Touya's looping explosion showed that you can't just save the "good victims". You have to save everyone - the innocent bystanders (Fuyumi and Natsuo), the person who doesn't want to hurt others but is broken by her own victimhood (Rei), the victim who becomes a perpetrator (Touya) and the source of it all (Enji). And since the Todoroki family is a small reflection of hero society - this is what will happen also on the large scale.
I'm sure there are people who didn't like the chapter - it wasn't enough of a closure, it wasn't happy enough or sad enough, it felt like the apology was hollow - if these are the things you are feeling think about that likely that's what Horikoshi wanted you to feel.
The Todorokis are an incredibly messed up family with lots of deep running hurt, trauma, and this is their reality. It's messy and raw and sad. There is no neat way of resolving it all with an ultimate move, no matter how fancy or powerful. But they are alive and they are together.

"This is a reply to a ignorant account"
This is the dumbshit the tumblr mha fandom loves to spout, when they don't get what they specifically want it's apparently the mangaka having poor writing because they aren't accommodating their wishes lmao. Fuck the kids, they aren't the only characters in this series. The whole point of sending in reinforcements was to focus on them obviously.
Literally nowhere did hori break the world building at all either, don't know where you got that nonsensical bullshit from. Not to mention this chapter clearly makes it a point that she can't do any and everything, I gotta keep reminding myself that the tumblr fandom can't read either and then you try to shit talk hori for being creative with star's quirk? Lmao. Also, Search doesn't tell the user the weaknesses of their quirks, otherwise shigaraki would've know deku's, endeavor and etc's quirk weaknesses during the war, common sense.

Ch 408 - Thoughts
Quite a solid chapter, with some interesting details.
Tumblr media
I'm glad Yoichi got 2 months to live without his crazy brother, presumably having living his OT3 life with Kudo and - Bruce. (lol, I definitely take it as a Bruce Lee joke).
AFO killed him pretty brutally though, he could have taken out both second and third in one fell swoop - but I guess in his pettiness he wanted them to suffer. He may even have given OFA to Kudo when he splattered Yoichi all over his face. (or maybe they did it in the old-fashioned way...)
Tumblr media
Kudo is really hot. Bruce looks like the smart one (after all, he gave OFA to the guy with Danger sense).
Tumblr media
This page is brilliant. Love the panelling and the two parallel dialogues of Yoichi with AFO and with Kudo. The sense that he really wanted to save his brother - I feel so sad for Yoichi.
But also the way AFO is holding on to the physical hand he cut off of Yoichi, while Kudo is looking at the hand from which Yoichi was cut off. Yet on the bottom panel - Kudo's eyes reflect the hand (the connection that OFA started) while AFO is unable to connect. He only sees emptiness. That something was "stolen" from him.
Tumblr media
This spread is pretty cool - we get to see how all the vestiges died, plus Ujiko meeting AFO. AFO was especially brutal with En. I'm really curious what was his deal. Did he give Nana his hair with his body cleaved in half????
Tumblr media
So in the end it looks like Kudo and Bakugou are not related and all that smoke and mirrors is just a coincidental resemblance. As someone who never thought that the ancestor theory would add much to the plot - I'm ok with this. Also, it's a neat detail that Bakugou's eyes earlier never have the "sparkle" in them. So it makes sense that AFO would only make the connection now.
Tumblr media
Oh my, the blood-drop.
Full power AFO - I worry about Hori's hands. Also, hello Vestige!Hawks. I do wonder if there's going to pull a spy on AFO and turn his quirks on him.
Tumblr media
I think Bakugou is not going to charge head-on. There's a lot of focus on his sweat drops - so I'm thinking he's gonna trick AFO. The set-up reminds me of DvK - except this time Katsuki is the massive underdog, while AFO is the one blinded by rage.
Tumblr media
As for Bakugou's last line, reading the Japanese reactions, it sounds like Bakugou says something like "If I'm stupid, I'll lose" - which make sense.

What do you think of AFO's backstory ?!
I thought it was pretty interesting lore-wise:
AFO being before the Glowing baby and possibly being the "original" or one of the originals makes me wonder what happens once AFO is destroyed
AFO and Yoichi being twins (very Romulus / Remus vibes!!!) means they share the same genetics, so clearly their quirk is connected somehow. Whether it's the same quirk split into two parts (AFO's ability to take and give quirks, Yoichi's hidden quirk of being able to pass his quirk) or whether AFO together with the nutrients syphoned the quirk from Yoichi originally other than that little room OFA is walled off in. There are lots of possibilities, including that there is a lot more to Yoichi's quirk than just the ability to give it, and Izuku will be the one to unlock that ability.
AFO's psychology is also interesting - clearly another case of nature vs nurture. Even if AFO taking his mother's quirk as a baby, that's not to mean he was born evil with no hope. Remember Eri also killed her father when her quirk came in, but with nurture, she got better. I think the lack of nurture for AFO with a clear predisposition to selfishness that spiraled out of control. So I feel like wanting everything to exist for his sake kind of leads back to trying to fill the hole he was missing.
Is their mother still inside AFO as a vestige?
How did they survive as babies? I have so many questions…
Again - Yoichi and AFO coming from the same backstory finding inspiration in the hero and the villain fits with the overarching theme of the story - where keeping your eyes fixed on a hero can be saving in itself.
The last image is pretty brutal - cutting off Yoichi's hand that reached for someone else and generally his obsession with his brother to me speaks to a deeper need than just "one tool he possesses". Maybe here the important thing is that Yoichi kept having hope for him despite all the evidence to his villainy.
Hope that we will get to see what happens exactly during the escape and how Yoichi manages to pass his quirk to Kudo. With him bleeding out possibly, maybe it's that blood, together with a dying wish is what leads to the "birth" of OFA.

I didn't read the leaks this weak, only the summary, and I enjoyed the chapter much more.
This guy sent me cackling on page 1 and couldn't stop laughing until the end:
Tumblr media
I have so many questions:
Did he bake the pie?
What kind?
Did his wish for a pie turn into wishing energy that saved All Might?
Was Hori thinking of a pie when he drew him?
If I wish hard enough for a pie, will I change the future?
I'm begging you, Hori! I need answers!

BNHA 413 - some thoughts
I kind of dislike trying to make Star now somehow important by creating a crack to the "sad child"
I definitely HATE the idea of "Tenko" being an actual innocent ghost child who can be conveniently saved without Deku having a discussion with Tomura and dealing with him directly
I don't mind OFA being passed, but for the love of everything, why can't it be Deku's own initiative? Why does it have to come from Kudou?
My long-term gripe with the vestiges is fully demonstrated in this chapter. These dead people have no dynamic with Deku or with each other. It's just hollow to have "self-sacrifice" from a ghost who was already dead. (With Kudou being this important, I do wonder if the bak-u-go theories were correct, but HK changed his mind.)
I guess we can now predict all the vestiges getting lobbed over to dig Tenko out of the hole. I'm pretty sure at least Nana and All Might will go, because at least they have a connection to the "sad child". and will have some kind of emotional parting from Deku.
I am really really hoping that this fight won't be just won by the vestiges fully cutting out the need for Deku to get through to Tomura. That would make his fight worse than both Toga-Ochako and Dabi vs Todo-fam, which both needed to face their villain in their current reality.
So I'm hoping for one of two things:
Child Tenko is dug out, but he's like Tomura says is not a separate entity, but Tomura himself and to demonstrate that, he'll decay the vestiges. (They have no good narrative role / space, so might as well be sacrificed for some tension and a final test of faith that Deku will keep smashing the lid even when he's lost something he treasures).
Child Tenko crack is a booby trap set up by AFO and the "trump card" he mentioned to lure OFA out. So again, it would be somehow an attempt failing, but at least Tomura would get a chance to talk to Nana and see All Might vestige put everything on the line to try to save his child self that nobody reached out to. And that could prepare the ground for a conversation with Deku.

Another good chapter with the temperature and tension rising in the Todoroki plot...
- After the hope that Rei, Natsuo and Fuyumi presented, the police confirms that their ice is not enough. I think that makes sense considering all 3 of them are untrained civilians who never did any quirk output training and Touya's flames are Endeavor ++
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Touya's thoughts as he cycles between "this is how it feels like" and "if it was this easy, why only now" as he watches Endeavor's burning face is haunting. It feels like maybe there is a little regret in there, a bit of too little too late. But maybe the first tiny crack to show that he doesn't want to end things like this.
- Cut to a reminder what's at stake. The civilians still trying to escape the blast range, and the heroes like Uraraka are still fighting a few meters away. A lot that's dear is at stake for Shouto, not just the immediate Todoroki family.
- Love the contrast between Shouto's little fans from the Remedial class and Can't-You-See-kun who is wearing an Endeavor merch outfit - but they both believe in their heroes and don't look away even as things seem hopeless.
- The woman in the Philippines shows us that not only in Japan but also people around the world are watching. I'm also wondering if it's a set up to change the weather there once we get the pressure from Touya's and Shouto's combined Phosphor released in one way or another
- I think it will look really cool in the anime how the ice jet comes in. You can see the building and then the same building with the vibration and rain drops changing shape from the speed.
Tumblr media
- The melting panel edges become straight when the kids notice the Shouto - Iida jet - maybe the cool air has hit them.
- It's a cool quirk combo between the two of them (and wouldn't be surprised if Hatsume had a hand in it too when he upgraded Iida's armor)
Tumblr media
- I love the last double spread. It's a really good contrast between the serious panel and the goofy nickname. It's just like Shouto - he looks deceptively cool but he's also a big dork and the gap is what makes his character funny in an endearing way.
- I always loved the Remedial arc, I think it had a lot of the core themes of the manga well represented - the essence of saving being about hearts / quirk and emotional development / quirk singularity doomsday theory / the meaning of the Symbol of Peace, plus it was a really important development for Shouto so I'm happy to see the references back to it

BNHA 388 - first thoughts
Spoilers under the cut
More familiar faces are popping up among the evacuees - interesting that the Culture Fest haters are there too. Wonder if the rest of Class A in the area will get to do something too to help stall until Shouto arrives. It seems like the biggest issue is getting in the air without making Touya blow up. Uraraka, Inasa, Yanagi all have the quirks to do that.
Rei going full on badass, hijacking a robot, riding into the heat with a Terminator reference - nice
I knew Fuyumi and Natsuo would be following Rei. So I guess Natsuo has ice, just like Fuyumi and mom. Their faces are so heartbreaking. Fuyumi's abandonment issues, Natsuo's regret - all of it is on full display. They are both really traumatized too.
I like how this chapter highlights that this is not something Endeavor can just do alone, isolating everyone else from the damage. It's not an Enji-Touya matter, it's for the whole family to tackle - because they were always a part of it.
It seems like their presence at least is getting through to Touya. I think the last vision is his - his ideal what-if future. But the fact that he's still wearing the Dabi-coat makes me think that it won't be over easily.
I'm not sure if Shouto will arrive just yet. I could imagine a bit more stalling here although not very long, because everyone is burning up. Let's see.

BNHA 395 - Thoughts
I’m leaning towards liking this chapter, though probably for completely different reasons than the majority of fandom.
No, I don’t think it’s a good end to Toga’s character, but that’s fine because I don’t believe she’s dead or that’s even the point.
If she is, it will go down as a pathetic bury your gays ending for her, that I’ll hate even if I don’t particularly care about the ship itself.
What I liked about this chapter is that it feels like it’s going back towards the overall narrative direction.
I was not a fan of how “easy” Ochako got the saving of the hearts part (compared to everyone else’s efforts, it felt hugely unfair) - and for me it really cheapened their fight as it felt excessively sentimental (in the unearned sense) and melodramatic.
But the fact that Toga despite having been touched by Ochako’s acceptance is still suicidal and still doesn’t see a future for herself.
It brings to the surface the ultimate issue with saving the villains - that if their choice is death or prison, it makes it hard to de-escalate even if a connection is made.
So I’ve been thinking that maybe the point of this overly syrupy presentation is to paint a picture. Both to the fandom and to the public in story who are watching this unfold in real time through the news helicopters.
Two pretty girls connecting, saving each other, Toga who has been used already as propaganda by the PLF publicly sacrificing herself can be the human interest story that will change the public mood and make them open to the villain’s redemption.
Touya and Tomura couldn’t do this - they are not as sympathetic as a schoolgirl with the tragic vampire aesthetic.
So currently the world offers no alternative to the villains, but maybe a third way can become possible where redemption can be earned via good deeds (like how Toga could help out in hospitals rather than die or be locked away).
The second thing I liked was Hawks. I was looking forward most to his involvement in this storyline and I felt really let down when he seemingly had no role. However, seeing him also near suicidal, just accepting or even welcoming his fate was the kind of raw emotions I wanted from him.
He’s all alone now - having failed his goal, he lost his quirk, his idol rejoined his family. As the Twice clones are turning to dust, he doesn’t have to protect the fallen kids anymore, and Hawks puts down his sword and almost invites a last act of revenge.
But the narrative doesn’t let Hawks die and I think it will be because he’s going to have to face himself as Keigo. Without quirk, without hero paraphernalia, without the family he invented for himself. He is symbolically stripped down to his core self and he will discover what he can do and what he is about.
And I think for now, he can save Toga and for later, he as the heir to the HPSC can be the person to spearhead the bold changes in society that can give an option to people who fell on the wrong path to pull their life back together. People like Jin, people like Tomie.

BNHA 275 -Thoughts
Not much to say about this chapter - it is clearly a transitional one.
I feel like HK kind of “phoned in” the girls’ fight because ultimately this is not what matters.
Uraraka can’t save Toga until Toga brought Sad Girls’ Parade to Hawks. So everything else was stalling for time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What matters though is this parallel - both Toga and Touya leaving Shouto and Ochako behind, and when they try to taunt their counterparts neither of them stay but both look back.
Probably, because both Ochako and Shouto referred to something that made them feel like they were listening and willing to engage them on their own terms. And maybe it was too late, but that moment was marked nevertheless.
Ochako and Tsu getting through the portal to Gunga makes me even more convinced that Shoto and Iida are coming too. The portal Touya came through is covered by fire and smoke, leaving it ambiguous.
Tumblr media
I’m excited about Hawks facing Twice (not so much in terms of fight, but more emotionally.)

Best moment in the chapter was Tenko subtly playing finger puppets to show that he’s still in there.
Other cool moments:
Hatsume unperturbed + Mirio tiny first aid panel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I felt literally nothing when Deku went ham with 2nd’s quirk. Just like Fa Jin, it’s there to let him smash harder. Yay - I guess?
Technically he surpassed All Might, but because of the rushing & off-screening, it just doesn’t feel like anything.
Transmission I guess will get interesting either when Deku uses “reverse” (I assume that’s one of the gears) or if the 5-minute time limit is up.
I’m guessing Erasure will be taken out of the equation to tilt the balance again, either via Skeptic detaching the support part of the coffin or AFO showing up.
Anyways, it was interesting to see AFO in person towards the end with Yoichi - which further shows that they are not fully merged.
All Might I guess is still signing that card for Bakugou.

BNHA 377 - Thoughts
The opening page had such a lovely melancholy to it. Feels like it's All Might's hands - and the cherry petals that slip through his hand are heart-shaped. I wonder if we are going to see him soon (in the vestige plane or whatever is going on with Bakugou...
Tumblr media
2. Aizawa's eyes sparking up with a moment of hope - i love the conflicting feelings on his face - before it all goes to hell...
Tumblr media
3. Lol, Deku's "saving punch" did manage to split AFO and Tomura. No comment, it's shonen BS, just as the big explosion that happens for "some reason" and does nothing. I'm not a fan of Deku going at the villain with ape-shit violence being the thing that saves Tomura. It feels like the same old MC-privilege where everyone else gets punished for violence, but Deku gets rewarded for doing the exact same thing.
Tumblr media
4. Tomura being back is a good thing though. I want Deku to have to interact with Tomura rather than getting the "Tenko-shortcut" to saving. Also, Tomura is way more entertaining than AFO or New Person Altogether.
Tumblr media
5. Gear Shift's downside is revealed and it looks like 2nd vestige is pushing Deku down a self-destructive path. I have a feeling 2nd's "victory no matter the cost" is going to find some resistance from either All Might or Mr "Victory-with-no-losses" himself.
Tumblr media
6. I'm personally not too excited about La Brava - for one, her return was telegraphed, two, I just find the La Brava - Gentle relationship really icky (a personal squick).
But it is thematically fitting - allowing former villains to be useful is what will turn the tide of this conflict and La Brava and Gentle were always the easiest "redemption candidates".
Also, it gives me hope that we will see other long-teased cameos (like the Shiketsu crew).
Overall, interesting chapter, especially Erasure getting cancelled and Tomura's return bring fresh blood into the plot.

Ch 382 Leaks - Thoughts
There is some interesting stuff in this chapter - the most interesting is Toga’s internal struggle.
Her frustration over not being able reach her full power shows her confusion about love. She can’t unleash Twice’s full power - but as a reminder, she could do it with Uraraka’s.
This crack in her mind will be the key to turning sides, I’m sure. She cares about the LoV members, but doesn’t want to become them. She wants to become Deku and Ochako. And as a reminder, she can use their power in ways they wouldn’t (like when she killed Curious).
Before the inevitable TnJ happens, I really want to see Toga in boss mode (unleashing a power she can use fully - Deku’s or Ochako’s).
I quite like how Hori manages to combo the powers of side characters. Camie darkening the sky to help Dark Shadow is a good use of her quirk. I hope we will see more of these combos as we get gradually to our main characters.
The weak side of the chapter is AFO again. He just comes across really unmenacing which kind of sucks the tension out of this fight. His rewind rate is also super-inconsistent. He stayed the same for ages, then there was a sudden spurt of de-aging. Though I do like him more as a Babyface!AFO at least.
Machia turning up here is a cool twist. Most people did predict that Shinsou will end up Mind Controlling Machia, but not necessarily him showing up at Gunga.
We will see what went on at the hospital I guess for the next 2-3 chapters, hopefully also getting a good highlight for Mina.
Bringing Machia here is a risky gamble though, because if for whatever reason the Mind Control breaks or Shinsou is taken out, it can quickly turn against the heroes. I guess their hope is that AFO will be rewound into nothing before that happens.

If you have seen the sneak peek of chapter 360 can you give us your opinion of what you think will happen? I was have read if he gets saved by the Big 3 (not sure if that’s true or just a theory) mainly I just wanted to get your take on the upcoming chapter! I have been following for a while and I love how you talk about each chapter!!
The whole chapter is out, as well as the summary, so if you are willing to spoil yourself, you can find out exactly what happens. I've also already written quite a lot about it - if you check my bnha 360 tag.
Last chapter, when fandom fell into despair, I said that I didn't believe this was the end of Bakugou's involvement in the fight (as the core of his character is never to give up) and that how HK handles what is coming is going to be an indication for me for the rest of the story.
The one thing I was adamantly against is rage!Deku come in, see the desperate state Kacchan is in and use that as emotional catalyst to beat Shigaraki.
Let me explain why I didn't want that:
"I'm sorry I said something so awful"
Tumblr media
We had the Villain Hunt arc which concluded basically by saying that Deku can't do this alone, he needs to accept others, he needs to accept people with less power than him staking their lives out of their own free will to help him and trust that they can handle themselves. If Bakugou here had to be bailed out by Deku specifically, it would have proven right Deku's fears that the others can't keep up with him. You know the exact thing he even apologized for as an awful thing to say, because it also would have proven everyone right who ridiculed and stomped over quirkless Deku's dreams. The entire narrative question of the story about who can be a hero.
2. Wait but isn't it exactly what happened? Bakugou had to be saved...
Bakugou having to be saved by the team is not problematic - because that precisely shows both Bakugou's teamplay philosophy from back in JTA (I'll have your backs and when I'm in trouble you'll save me) and also how hero society has grown and changed since Ch 1 when the heroes stood around waiting for someone with the right power to save Bakugou (or you know nobody helping Tenko), while now they all work together to get him back.
3. "Control your heart"
I don't know if you have noticed, but since the endgame fight started, everyone who had a part in it so far got taunted by the villains, putting them face-to-face with their worst fears, guilts, inadequacies. And raising to the bait gets you beaten. All those words were wielded as weapons - targeting their hearts.
Shouto (whose new power required perfect concentration / meditative state) got told by Touya how he was their father's half-baked little puppet who will never amount to anything and kept being rejected by his brother.
Hawks was taunted for losing his wings / becoming worthless.
Endeavor got taunted by letting his sons fight each other, and when that didn't work, AFO pulled out the Touya's body card (and Endeavor went down when he lost his head).
Jirou and Tokoyami were called weak gnats
You get the pattern...
Which to me meant two things: (1) Bakugou needed to prove that he really faced and conquered his worst fears (that he's weak, not as great as everyone told, that he's the stepping stone for Deku, that he has no chance to become no. 1.) and is able to stand up mentally in face of those fears and continue to give his best (2) if everyone else needs to control their hearts and fears, Deku shouldn't (again) win by rage.
So the new chapter's direction feels really good to me, because Bakugou after that soul-crushing, brutal and absolutely humiliating beatdown is controlling his heart. He's focused, he hasn't lost his faith that a path to victory can be found, he hasn't lost his will to fight. A power-gap is not the end of the road, it means having to find other ways (like early Deku who could only keep up by quirk analysis, teamwork and creativity). We see Bakugou vulnerable and hurt - but he hasn't given up. How could he? That's who he is. That's his image of All Might - the one who never gives up, no matter how hard.
4. "But with his broken arms"
So this was one of the biggest problems last chapter - how can Bakugou keep fighting and contributing (even if he won't give up) when one of his arms are broken, essentially depriving him of half his quirk.
My response to this was that Deku was allowed to fight in such situation (most famously in the Muscular fight - where both his arms were broken, his 100% OFA hits shrugged off, yet he managed to keep on with his broken arms and somehow surpass his max).
So for Bakugou, there were 3 possible paths: (1) same as Muscular!Deku - getting to keep on fighting with a broken body (2) a quirk awakening removing the limitation of his quirk (3) finding an entirely different path to victory (such as a fight inside the vestige realm or a team strategy).
I feel like the way implied in the end of the chapter is a mix of everything. BJ will stitch up Bakugou's arm. He seems to have a quirk awakening that would allow him produce explosions from other body parts than just his palms, opening up more options for him. And he seems to have spotted a weakness to exploit in Shigaraki. And as far as I'm concerned - that's a good way to go - playing into all of Bakugou's arc.
5. "It doesn't matter, he can't win against Shigaraki. He's Deku's villain"
Again, to me this is not an issue. Bakugou can get a win / make a difference while simultaneously Deku can still have a lot left to done.
I don't know if you noticed, but none of the villains are done. Toga has the Twice clones up her sleeve, Dabi's chest is glowing, AFO is rewinding. I'm sure even if they beat ShigAFO, a new boss-form will come. And Deku's role in any case is about saving Shigaraki (giving rise to a possible conflict between Bakugou and Deku or alternatively, to showcase their relationship where Bakugou, the one who almost died at Shigaraki's hands will be the one to back Deku up, displaying his trust in Deku's way) so he can help them destroy AFO.
So I'm very optimistic with how this chapter played out. It's reinforcing the themes I want to see and it gives Bakugou to stand on his own feet to complete his own arc (that's the stage we are at). The resolution of the important bonds will come after - and I'm sure it will come. Bakugou and Deku will talk, will fight, will support and save each other. I'm sure of it. But this would have been the wrong time.

BNHA 383 - leaks - first thoughts
As expected - a flashback chapter to Jakku
I expected a little bit more highlight on the Class B students. Kodai gets a cool combo with Mt Lady, but I think Honenuki sinking the villains in the background is really out of focus.
I did not expect the Sludge Villain to come into play here, though it has vague ties to Kirishima’s plotline, as the news about Deku running into to save Bakugou was one of his inspirations.
Mina getting a nice highlight is long overdue. I like that she poured her frustration over not being able to do anything into upgrading her ultimate move and that Bakugou and Todoroki helping / inspiring her new technique. I think we saw them take a prominent role in Class A and I like the idea of them helping their classmates to improve their quirks.
Her tiny “no jutsu” to Midnight’s killer sounds a bit shoehorned though.
The battle felt a bit rushed to be honest, but with already knowing the outcome, the tension feels a bit diminished anyways, so I’m fine with that. I guess this also still means that Kirishima’s highlight will come in real time, rather than inside the flashback
Mt Lady got some cool nods to the Baseball AU.
The heroes are throwing everything at Ikemen AFO, who seems to be able to hold them back without much difficulty.
Who is in the helicopters? Hmm... I’d guess All Might+ mystery suitcase or Shouto/Iida. But if it’s Shouto + Iida, that would mean Iida’s speed coming into play in a different context.  Of course, getting more AFO allies is also a possibility since he got outplayed on Machia.

Note
I'm just surprised Bakugou took such a hit so early on. Like others, I wanted to see more payoff to his training. However, I also like this if this let's others shine in this fight - finally we can see the Big3 actually in action together. And then also an opportunity to let Bakugou shine in another way. To top it off, it also shows how terrifying Tomura is in comparison to washed out AFO.
I guess Bakugou’s biggest shining moment will be from a position of weakness and vulnerability.
He’s really been reduced from the guy with a great quirk and prodigious talent on the greatest hero fast track to someone whose absolute best is just not enough. He struggled so much, swallowed many bitter pills, trained and improved relentlessly, did his great sacrifice play and got even a power-up, but all that work and effort all leads him to being nothing more than “MC-sama’s closest”. Not a threat or a great hero, but just a pawn to be used by the strong.
People are not born equal. And now Bakugou is in the position of early Deku - who is being told that he can’t be good enough, effort and will be damned.
And I think it will make or break the theme of the story what Horikoshi will decide to do with him now.
Because the story told us that All Might and Deku are not great because of their power but because of their heart.
That all goes out the window if Bakugou serves for nothing more than Deku’s damsel to save or emotional catalyst to a rage-boner.
Bakugou has to matter through his own choices and initiative. Not just be saved but save and win himself to prove the point of the story. That a hero can be inside everyone and it’s not the flashy power that makes them such.
Bakugou’s showcase is to prove he won’t break in the face of overwhelming odds and won’t compromise on his ideals.
