On #NationalBirdDay we're visiting the Bronx Park East (2,5) Station where Candida Alvarez’s "B is for Birds in the Bronx" (2006) celebrates several types regularly seen in this borough. At least 300 bird species have been recorded by observers in the #Bronx, including a variety of breeding species, including Green Heron, Wild Turkey and Cliff Swallow

🤲🏻@elmuseo announces 𝘌𝘚𝘛𝘈𝘔𝘖𝘚 𝘉𝘐𝘌𝘕: 𝘓𝘈 𝘛𝘙𝘐𝘌𝘕𝘈𝘓 𝟸𝟶/𝟸𝟷, the museum’s first national large-scale survey of #Latinx contemporary art featuring more than 40 artists from across the United States and #PuertoRico. Curated by @rodrigoemoura and @svtemkin from El Museo del Barrio and featuring as guest curator, New York-based artist @asahinyc. ⁣ This first iteration of #LaTrienal borrows its title, 𝘌𝘚𝘛𝘈𝘔𝘖𝘚 𝘉𝘐𝘌𝘕, from the work of participating artist @candida_alvarez_studio, a former member of El Museo’s curatorial team in the 1970s and the only artist in the show with a previous exhibition history with the institution. ⁣ ⁣ Alvarez’s painting 𝘌𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘺 𝘉𝘪𝘦𝘯 (2017) takes its title from the resilient and obliquely sarcastic response to the aftermath of #HurricaneMaria in Puerto Rico. Now pluralized, the phrase resonates with the present-day moment, as the works in the exhibition address issues of race and identity politics, gentrification and displacement, climate change, as well as the particular effects of the global pandemic to Latinx and other BIPOC populations. ⁣ ⁣ This landmark exhibition demonstrates El Museo del Barrio’s commitment to championing the voices, stories and lived experiences of Latinx artists in the United States. We invite audiences to challenge established truths, unpack authentic narratives, and see themselves reflected in the works of art presented. @hyperallergic: Wiki Edit-a-Thon dedicated to Women Artists of Color ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿⁣ ⁣ Organized by the nonprofit organization Art+Feminism and Wikimedia DC, the region’s official outreach organization for Wikipedia, the annual Wiki Edit-a-Thon enlists volunteers to help close the gender gap in Wikipedia’s coverage of female artists by creating new profiles and enhancing existing ones. The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) has hosted the edit-a-thons in person since 2014; because of the ongoing pandemic, this year’s edition was held entirely online today, August 11. Titled 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳, the event was dedicated to artists of color in the NMWA’s collection, with a focus on women from the African diaspora.⁣ ⁣ Most of these artists, such as Candida Alvarez, already had Wikipedia pages. But even existing profiles require significant updating, proofing, and expanding. In total, volunteers edited 85 articles and created two profiles, adding 17,200 words and 180 references to pages primarily about Black women. ⁣ ⁣ @candida_alvarez_studio @womeninthearts @nmwa_committees @wikipedia @wikimediadc @artandfem ⁣ 📌 For a complete list of the profiles updated during the edit-a-thon, click the link in our bio. ⁣ Candida Alvarez⁣ 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥 (no.9, detail), 2013⁣ Acrylic and pencil on Yupo paper⁣ 9 x 11 in (22.9 x 27.9 cm)⁣ ⁣ #candidaalvarez #NMWA #nationalmuseumofwomeninthearts #blackartistsmatter #editathon #wikipedia #artandfeminism #womeninthearts #feministartist #feministmovement #museumfromhome #womenartist #togetherstronger #workingartist #femaleartists #womeninart #feministart #inspiringwomen #womenartists #socialchange #womenintheartworld #blackartists #blackart #africandiasporaart #blackartwork #supportblackartists #worksonpaper #museumcollection #equalitymatters #thefutureisfemale (at National Museum of Women in the Arts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD4dtcMFDws/?igshid=y3pah3f1zr08

The Museo de Arte Contempráneo de Puerto Rico presents part two of the exhibition: 𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘦: 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘰 𝘙𝘪𝘤𝘰 (Anarquía y dialéctica en el deseo: géneros y marginalidad en Puerto Rico, Part 2) on view now through February 28, 2021.⁣ ⁣ This exhibition transcends the approach of exhibiting "art made by women" to give way to the study and recognition of the material, historical, political and subjective reality of the body as a self-conscious space; one that recognizes 'Desire' as the impulse and catalyst for artistic production, and 'Art' as an exercise of resistance and re-existence.⁣ ⁣ Being an artist in a country rife with colonial history as Puerto Rico implies inhabiting a space of political, social or economic marginality. Moreover, being a woman, or inhabiting a feminized or racialized body, AND being an artist on the island thus involves intersections that widen the layers of marginality, which requires further contextualization.⁣ ⁣ Join MAC for a virtual conversation led by Raquel Torres Arzola (artist, educational coordinator, and guest curator) on Wednesday, 12/16, at 6PM EST. ⁣ To register, visit the link in our bio!⁣ ⁣ Candida Alvarez⁣ 𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘍𝘢𝘪𝘳, 𝘒𝘰𝘭𝘯 (𝘈𝘒𝘈 𝘓𝘢𝘷𝘢 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘭) ⁣ 2009⁣ Acrylic on cloth⁣ 68.5 x 18.5 inches ⁣ Collection of the artist⁣ ⁣ @museomacpr @candida_alvarez_studio @kimonorose2 @torresarzola ___⁣ #candidaalvarez #darkfair #lavacaramel #mac #museomac #macpr #MuseodeArteContempráneo #puertorico #puertoricanart #puertoricanartists #womenartists #femaleartists #latinartists #latinart #latinamericanart #latinx #latinxart #latinxartists #genders #marginality #desire #museomacpr #raqueltorresarzola #candidaalvarezstudio #virtualtour #museumtour #curatorialdialogue #colonialism #contemporary_art #puertoricancontemporaryart (at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CI0gOW-FVV7/?igshid=1jnfpr155b0t1

✏️💛🎨 Twenty years ago, in the summer of 2000, Barbara Gladstone Gallery organized an exhibition entitled 𝟶𝟶, a survey of drawings at the turn of the millennium. On the 20th anniversary of this expansive presentation, 𝘋𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟶 revisits this idea of drawing—how it remains vital, how it constantly mounts a quiet revolution, and how it transforms in the care of different artists—as a lens into how artists live and make work at this important moment in history. ⁣ ⁣ These works are a product of our times: influenced by the physical, political, and technological elements of everyday life. More recently, quarantine in the face of a global pandemic and a widespread reckoning on race have changed many perspectives and how we view the world, each other, and art. Yet the act of drawing has continued to surge forward – the works in this exhibition present the inherent complexities and intrinsic qualities of what constitutes a drawing in the expanded field.⁣ ⁣ 𝘋𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟶, an exhibition of drawings made in the present moment, is currently on view at @gladstone.gallery’s 21st Street gallery and in the online viewing room. Release 1/5 will be available online September 24 – October 5: to view, visit link in bio! ⁣ ⁣ Candida Alvarez⁣ 𝘋𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝟺, 2020⁣ Watercolor pencil on yupo paper⁣ 12 x 9 inches (30.5 x 22.9 cm)⁣ @candida_alvarez_studio, courtesy of the artist and Gavlak Los Angeles/Palm Beach.⁣ ___⁣ #candidaalvarez #candidaalvarezstudio #drawingshelter #puertoricanartists #latinartists #latinxart #feministartist #bipocartists #womeninthearts #womenartist #workingartist #femaleartists #feministart #inspiringwomen #watercolor #womenartists #puertorico #thefutureisfemale #worksonpaper #yupo #yupopaper #drawing2020 #gladstone #gladstonegallery #onlineviewingrooms #viewingroom #barbaragladstone #exhibition00 #galleryexhibition #drawing (at Gladstone Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFxUBQmFyq2/?igshid=1oseds52nl37h
