Day dress hand-made from block-printed cotton and lined with cotton. Cut and constructed for nursing. 1830 The dress has a shallow wide neckline and long sleeves which are full at the sleevehead and tapers towards the wrist. The sleeve ends are finished with self-cuffs which are cut to wrap over and form a diagonal line, which is trimmed along the outside edge with six tiny gilt-metal, non-functional buttons. The cuffs fasten with hooks and eyes. The front panels of the bodice are decorated over the breasts with a pair of horizontal self-pleats which meet in a V-shape at the centre front. The dress has a slightly raised waist and a full bell-shaped skirt which is gathered into the waist. The hem of the skirt is trimmed with a deep self-flounce. The bodice has a loose panel which could be unfastened at the waist and lifted for nursing. The design of the print sets boldly drawn flower stems, which include marigolds, heather and valerian rendered in pink, yellow, green and indigo, on a vivid madder ground. The fabric was probably printed with indigo and madder by a resist process and overprinted with yellow to form orange and green. #history #museumcollection #antiquetextile #instamuseum #museumoninstagram #antiquecotton #historicaldress #costumehistory #fashion #historicalfashion #historicalclothing #dresshistory #fashionhistory #historicalcostume #fashionhistorian #19thcentury #19thcenturyfashion  #fashionexhibition #fashioncuration #fashionmuseum #dressmuseum #costumemuseum #historyofcostume #historyoffashion #historyofdress Source: V & A https://www.instagram.com/p/CdeE1QlAmOQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

💀 New Life After Death 👻
🏛️ I’ve loved the natural world for as long as I can remember. And while it is sad to work with dead animals, each specimen gets to live on, becoming immortal through the museum.
🦉 The goal of preservation is to make something that can withstand the test of time. When we open the drawers full of birds, there are specimens from the 1920s that are the prettiest bird in the bunch. So these hundred-year-old specimens live on to show us a snapshot of their world. It’s a little like time traveling. From the data associated with it, we can know where an animal was living, what it was eating, how old it was, how it died and often much more. These creatures, once thought to be gone forever, are reborn in our understanding, offering glimpses into the past that inform our present.
🧬 These specimens get to live on and answer questions we humans don’t even know to ask yet. Natural history museums have been collecting objects and specimens since the 17th century. In the 1950’s, the people collecting small mammals in the Philippines had no idea that in 50 years their specimens could be used in DNA studies. This is a testament to the afterlife of these animals in the world of science. They continue to play a role, even in a new era. As our understanding and technology evolves, these preserved beings will be resurrected once again, offering fresh insights and knowledge to future generations.
👩‍🔬 Collection workers like me are stewards of these specimens, making sure they can tell their stories for as long as possible. In a way, we are the guardians of this cycle of life, death, and rebirth in the realm of natural history. These creatures find a form of immortality, transcending death by becoming timeless messengers of the natural world. Their stories continue to unfold, and their contributions to our understanding of life on Earth are bound to endure, even as we peer into the mysteries of existence, both in this world and, perhaps, the next.

Truly humbled to be invited by Fashion Museum in Bath to view this inspiring exhibition where my sustainable couture wedding dress was chosen as one of the 10 curated unique displays at ‘You Choose’ exhibition in Fashion Museum, alongside pieces from designers Kenzo, Ossie Clark, Junya Watanabe, Jean Paul Gaultier and Gareth Pugh, as well as historic treasures including a 1750s man’s worsted wool banyan, an 1881 beetle wing embroidered day dress and 1940s women’s cape.   ‘Amongst over 100,000 objects in the Fashion Museum collection ranging from Shakespeare era to today’s leading designers (Christian Dior, Vivian Westwood and Alexander McQueen), Sanyukta Shrestha is the first designer of Nepali origin to be documented in the history of The Fashion Museum in 2012 and the only item identified as made in Nepal 🇳🇵till date.’ It is utterly incredible to receive this honour from one of the greatest Museums in the world. It has been a real pinch myself moment that has made me feel speechless and ecstatic. Thank you for bringing my vision into such a prestigious & unique showcase! It was certainly a mesmerising visit for me and my family, especially so touched by a dedicated museum tour by the exhibition curator Fleur Johnson. Thank you so much.🙏   Visit Fashion Museum, Exhibition is until 30th October 2022.  The tickets are available on the Fashion Museum website!
