After much trial and error, here's the full concert post- this got long so it's going under a readmore.
Got off to a strong start by accidentally cutting the whole line and not realizing it until the doors opened (nobody said anything for the entire 20 minute wait lol), but everything went smoothly with the tickets. The venue was pretty small- just a bar with a small stage area- but it wasn't crowded enough for the size to be a problem. I managed to snag a spot at the very front! Thank god because I'm pretty short and the visibility in my Jacket mask was horrible lol
Tumblr media
The first artist up was Destryur, whose music I'd never heard before. Tbh I thought he was a house DJ at first, but regardless I really liked his stuff! Sadly I didn't get any footage, but he was dressed up as a doctor with a devil mask on (apparently relevant to a song of his), and his background visuals were all clips from classic horror films. Somebody in the crowd started handing out glowsticks at this point which was awesome.
Next up was Street Cleaner, and MAN did he not disappoint. He was decked out in a sick glowing mask and jacket that matched the keytar he brought with him. I wish I knew where his visuals were from because they were awesome. Dude was amazing on stage and really got the crowd into it- at one point he stepped down into the crowd and danced next to me for a bit. Super fun performance and the music was incredible, he was easily my favorite artist of the night. Street Cleaner ily Street Cleaner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point, the staff started setting up the stage for Midnight Danger. I had noticed some instruments behind the other artists' display setups, and I was not wrong to assume that Midnight Danger would be using them for live band stuff alongside their backing synth tracks. While everything was getting set up, the speakers were playing some great classic synthwave/darkwave tracks. I recognized a lot of them, including stuff by Danger, Sunset Neon, Perturbator, and Nightstop. They started playing a Carpenter Brut song before it got interrupted by a sound check (rip What We Fight For 😔). Also, I wasn't the only person in costume but if anyone recognized me as Jacket they didn't say anything about it. Got some fun nicknames though, with Chicken Little and Dave's Hot Chicken being my favorites. Mostly drunk people looking at me and going "You're a chicken! :D"
Tumblr media
Last act of the night was, of course, Midnight Danger. Since they're a group of 2 they had one guy on drums and the other switching between synthesizer and electric guitar. Their music was definitely a lot heavier than Street Cleaner's, and they had the whole crowd headbanging. I kind of wish their lights were toned down a little bit but overall they looked great, they sounded great, the whole thing was great. They killed it on stage and they seemed like they were having fun! Warning for flashing lights in the video.
After the stage was cleared, I took the chance to explore the rest of the venue. They had an outdoor porch area that gave me the much-needed opportunity to get some fresh air with a few merch tables set up. I didn't get anything but they had some pretty cool stuff out for Midnight Danger. I hung out and danced for a while, as well as talked to some of the other people. One of the girls I met literally lifted me up at one point which tbh I didn't love, but oh well no harm done. There was a house DJ that came out after Midnight Danger and they had a nice cyberpunk sound that was great to vibe out to while I waited for my ride back.
Overall it was a pretty great experience! I'm happy I got to do something for Halloween weekend, and now I can say I've seen some great live synthwave. Hoping I can go to more events like this in the near future :]

Stay Safe Playlist
Tumblr media
YouTube Playlist for Stay Safe Found Here
(Alternatively, if the link doesn't work: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtGKUohVH5zUp6uaQkDTx7T8VNCVjrccq )
I present the soundtrack/score/playlist for Stay Safe! While I was writing, I had the idea to ‘score’ it like it was a visual media byproduct. Music is incredibly helpful for me when I need to visualize different things or instill certain emotions.
Beneath the cut you will find a full breakdown of the individual songs chapter by chapter, as well as the YouTube links to each of them! There will be spoilers for all chapters of Stay Safe, of course.
Enjoy!
Part One: Should Have Known Better
Intro--Carpenter Brut
So here we have our introductory piece! Something to channel a little danger, a little suspicion, that sense of unease from waking up bleary-eyed in a new place. Throughout it weaves the old school sci-fi motif to set our scene, with heavy synth use and electronic instruments.
Launch--Daniel L.K. Caldwell
We lean heavily on the electronic once more, evoking a sense of weightlessness as we head through hyperspace to the dulcet tones of deep synth, querying brass and lonely, wordless vocalizations. Our protagonist finds themselves managing the care of a strange child in a new environment. They are weary and sore but their charge is an easy burden to bear, all things considered. When they eventually bed down for some well-deserved rest, they find they can sleep peacefully.
...x…
Part Two: Tranquil Turmoil
Star-Stealing Girl--Chrono Cross Original Soundtrack
This piece is inquisitive and lilting, and fits well with Sorgan. Through it you can hear soft, high vocalizations like a child's singing. The village radiates safety and comfort, invoking an aching sense of nostalgia for things that our protagonist may have once had.
The Countess Cathleen/The Women of Sidhe--Riverdance
Near and dear to the heart, this piece is twofold. We carry on the gentle, idyllic motif of the previous piece with some crooning pipes, but of course our group is in this village for a very specific reason. The second half of this track morphs into something determined, made of sterner stuff than its gauzy counterparts. This perfectly accompanies the implied training montage of the villagers and our protagonist under the watchful tutelage of a shock trooper and a Mandalorian.
...x…
Part Three: Vibroblade Mettle
Facing Fears--Ivan Torrent
At last, we come to our big fight! We start out soft, our protagonist calming the children in the hut before they themselves are attacked. There's the uptick in tempo, the shift of music where they grit their teeth down harmonized by beautiful vocalizations. The whole piece has a certain panicky cadence until around the halfway mark, where it briefly flattens out before building back up to a triumphant crescendo. Our protagonist will let nothing and no one past them.
Good Night--Undertale Soundtrack
Thoroughly exhausted and incapacitated by the fighting, our protagonist drops where they stand. They are safe, and they sleep like a rock in the comfort of that knowledge. This piece is short and soothing, perfect to loop over and over again to lull you into slumber.
The Rage Of The Shadow Warriors--Star Wars: Republic Commando Soundtrack
The children are taught a very important song and dance by the Mandalorian, which they then perform in front of their parents.
...x…
Part Four: Reaching Out
Cosmos--Hazy
This piece is contemplative, soft piano with ethereal, twinkling electronic notes. There is an airy quality to it that lends itself to reflection. We find our protagonist sitting sulky and disgruntled on Tattooine. At first, their resentment is sharp and crisp, but as one day turns into two, they begin to worry and their resentment thaws gently.
Sixty Seconds To What?--Ennio Morricone
Our gunslinging attack! We prelude with light chimes, instilling a false sense of security as Calican dandles the child on his knee. Then, the guitar picks up when our protagonist discovers the truth behind Toro's motives. Organ and horn blast to highlight Calican's villainous gloating and sneering at the Mandalorian, contrasting sharply with the light chimes once again to close the piece out as Calican falls.
America Online--The Midnight
The song that gave this chapter its title! This track invokes a sense of longing, with its worn-out cassette sound and quiet electronic pipe trills. Through it all weaves the tentative, heavily-filtered vocals with the query that our protagonist will soon find on the tip of their tongue.
...x…
Part Five: Dark Past
Lighting The Fuse--The Magnificent Seven Soundtrack
Our protagonist finds themselves in a tense spot, surrounded by unfamiliar ne'er-do-wells. There is unease in the air; we are at the slow build to an inevitable explosion. Grudging alliances are forged, undoubtedly for the sole purpose of gleefully breaking them.
Animal In Me--Solence
Our protagonist is separated from the Mandalorian once again and there is no way to truly know what transpired in the prison beneath their feet. However, his mental and physical state when he returns suggests that something unsavory has occurred. Our protagonist, for all of their good intentions, knows precious little about the armored man's grisly past.
Dream A Little Dream Of Me (Instrumental)--Yiruma
The Mandalorian, delirious, asks our protagonist to sing him the lullaby they sing for the child. They oblige, assisting him in obtaining peaceful rest.
...x…
Part Six: Go Alone
Bat Out Of Hell--Meat Loaf
Something lighthearted and fun! Meat Loaf songs are always a joy to belt out when you think no one else is listening, and this one is no exception. Our protagonist is unwittingly observed by the armored man, another nail driven in the coffin of eventual reveal.
The Savage Divide--Fallout 76 Soundtrack
We come to our protagonist moping around. They mourn being left behind once more, but they understand the reasoning behind it. This piece is wistful, with keening strings that lead nowhere but are lovely in their looping futility.
...x…
Part Seven: Like A Ghost
Is This Love--Whitesnake
The song that started it all! If this was a movie in the eighties, you can bet this would be the song playing during our important scene. The scene where the stoic Mandalorian finally bears his heart to our protagonist. It's a song that seems like it should be delighted, but it sounds more like heartache. Love is no simple thing, as we will soon find out.
Stay--Smash Into Pieces
The song that gave this chapter its name! Pleading agony given vocals. The Mandalorian doesn't know what to say and that appears to be his downfall as our protagonist leaves him to ruminate on his behavior.
Adieu--The Seatbelts
Our protagonist scolds themselves roundly for their doe-eyed optimism with this gentle jazz piece in the background. Whisper-soft vocals chiding over idyllic ideas of love, not so much sad as disappointed. The piece is steeped in callous awareness, though shrouded in piano and delicate guitar.
...x…
Part Eight: Savior At High Noon
Let It Never Be--Terrane
Our protagonist departs the Razor Crest alone and begins their walk back to the town. Soft, hazy vocals paint a picture of defeated, mechanical steps, emotions pushed to the side in favor of putting distance between our protagonist and the subject of their affections.
I'll Never See Him Again--Pocahontas Soundtrack
A throwback! Our protagonist finally makes it to the town and is ultimately struck by the crushing realization that they will no doubt never see the Mandalorian again. In a fit of exhausted grief and perhaps a touch of self pity, they cry themselves out. This piece never fails to elicit an emotional response, with the tender, pained violin playing that familiar theme.
Holdout--Two Steps From Hell
Our high noon showdown! We start strong, drums hammering like thunder as our protagonist all but throws themselves into the fray. The rattle of cymbals mimics the cacophony of beskar, loaning the scene a sense of despairing grandeur.
You Saved Me--Piotr Wojtowicz
Our protagonist, unmoved by intelligence or self-preservation, storms the proverbial beaches to aid the mortally wounded Mandalorian. Visual media would make this miles more glamorous, with gratuitous slow motion and competent lighting. We start out soft, but there's nothing quite like the breath-taking hitch of gentle piano that swells to female vocalization and fierce drum beats!
...x…
Part Nine: Swan Song
Mandalorian Funeral Chant--Star Wars: Republic Commando Soundtrack
The Mandalorian sings IG-11 off, paying tribute to the reformed droid in the only way that he knows how.
Sacrifice--Transformers: The Last Knight Soundtrack
It's time for agony! We have a somber piece, strings circling round and round to a build as our protagonist slowly loses consciousness. There is an urgency and fear here, as well as weary resignation. Our protagonist is so, so tired.
Melancholy--Alex Kosenko
The long walk home. The two weeks in the bacta tank. The uncertainty of our protagonist's fate, and how heavily it weighs on the Mandalorian who now finds himself alone again. This piece is lonely, it's sadness and longing all in one. A contemplative doldrum.
...x…
Interlude: How He Sees The World
Star Wars: The Mandalorian Suite--Samuel Kim
This composer is exceptionally talented! They've taken the score for this series and woven in motifs from the original scores, giving the whole piece a beautifully layered depth. A suite track for the retread installment, where we view the entire tale through the visor of the Mandalorian.
...x…
Part Ten: Shereshoy
One Summer's Day--Joe Hisaishi
Our protagonist wakes in the Nevarro medbay, disoriented from their time in the bacta. The piano shines here, with searching orchestrations occasionally gaining center stage. There is a feeling of loss, of nostalgia and most importantly, a sense that things need to be put to rights.
So Small--Thomas Bergersen
The reunion! This track starts off quiet, gentle. Apprehensive and yet, cautiously hopeful. Our protagonist has found their way back to the Mandalorian and, as the music swells in that oh-so-familiar old romantic motif, all is forgiven. The strings build in tandem with the brass and choir, triumphantly declaring everything that is affection and reconciliation before tapering off. However, if we wanted to go for something a bit more eighties...
The Outfield (The Midnight Remix)--The Night Game
The alternate/bonus track for their reunion! This remix has boosted synth and extra canned drums, lending itself better to the sci-fi vibes. Another crooning, eighties-style power ballad to have everything fade to black right before we get that salacious X rating, and the proverbial credits begin to roll.
Dream A Little Dream Of Me--Jacklyn Lovey
Finally, a vocal rendition of Dream A Little Dream Of Me. A modern cover with a gentler tone overall, and the perfect way to round this score out.
The curtain closes on our tale, and I would like to thank you all for reading, listening and enjoying! Stay safe, my friends!

The Teacup Awards B-Side (2019)
Not every game can get a big shiny award in front of cameras that zoom in on you clapping. Sometimes you have to get awarded something at a small dinner attended by people you’ve never met in your life. And that’s what these games repressent. They weren’t quite notable enough to win any of the big awards but they are still deserving of recognition. It’s time to make up some phony awards and give them to games I like. You know, more phony than the other ones. Shut up.
The ‘Third Best Roguelike’ Award For…
Enter The Gungeon
Enter The Gungeon has its claws in me. It seems like every time I’ve got a few minutes, I boot it up, jump straight in as the Pilot and proceed to blow it just before the final boss. Those claws are painful. I think most of its appeal comes from the skill elements that are thrown in. Of course, getting good items will help a run but unless you’ve got your dodging down pat, you’re not getting anywhere. It’s dodge roll or die. I like that.
Tumblr media
If there is any frustration here then it’s largely down to the duff items. I’m not sure picking up a water pistol is going to be the game changer that’s worth using up a key. It can be really quite annoying to clear a floor and you’re either still using your basic pistol or worse. At least the Hunter starts with the crossbow. That aside, the majority of the runs offer you something new. The fact that so many items synergise means there’s always something new to find. Hence why it places number three.
Behind the Binding of Isaac and Dead Cells, if you were wondering.
The ‘Spit Take’ Award For Funniest Game
Donut County
Everything is funny in Donut County. It exudes this sort of lighthearted charm from every pore. Even the simple, clean graphics work wonders when it’s depicting a racoon sitting on a toilet texting his best friend. Then he delivers a donut and everything falls apart. Thing is though, the silly graphics and charming (if a little too forced at times) dialogue is only half the reason it’s funny. Thirty percent, really.
Tumblr media
The true humour comes in the gameplay. You’re opening holes under things and watching them fall in. Doesn’t sound like the funniest thing in the world but it cracks me up. There’s something about seeing someone panic as their garden furniture slowly slides down into a widening hole that gets to me. Then it gets big enough to swallow their entire house. Slowly, ever so slowly, it tips over and is sucked out of view. I don’t know why I find it so funny, but I definitely do.
The ‘Swiss Army Teacup’ Award For Best Gimmick
Moonlighter
The whole shopkeeper adventurer business is not an entirely new gimmick. Recettear did it earlier, for example. But if you want something less… anime, then Moonlighter is a good choice. It splits itself in two. Half of your time is going to be spent delving into the dungeons. You collect the loot in there and fight to reach the boss. On the way you can use money, and the bits you pick up, to improve your gear. Eventually you clear out the dungeons and find the secret hidden at the bottom of them.
Tumblr media
The other half of the game is how you get that cash. You run your own shop, inherited from your father, called the Moonlighter. Fitting name. The odds and ends you find the dungeon go on your shelves and people come in and buy them. There’s no price regulation for random dungeon knickknacks, so you have to figure out the price yourself. People will buy for what they feel is a justified price. It’s a decent little balancing act, though rather too easy. But it’s a nice, simple game to kill some time to.
The ‘Caffeine Jitters’ Award For Most Stressful Game
Hacknet
Stress isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes when you’re stressed it’s because you’re focusing down on a puzzle. You’ve got a time limit ticking away and you’ve gotta engage that big ole brain to get through it. While HackNet is not the most challenging game in the world, it’s worthy of mention because of its final level. It teaches you all the skills you need and then puts them to one hell of a test.
Tumblr media
Set to Carpenter Brut’s ‘Roller Mobster’, it is incredibly stressful as you try to time all these programmes perfectly, while the trace rapidly ticks down. I failed it the first couple of times before breaking through and boy, was it satisfying.
The ‘Cup of Hot Water’ Award For Blandest Game
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider isn’t bad, nor is it particularly disappointing. It just… is. It does the modern Tomb Raider things, and does them very well. But that’s all it does. There’s no innovation, excitement, nothing even that interesting. It goes through the motions to an almost clinical degree. Again, it’s not bad, it’s even fun at times. It’s just bland and not worth paying full price for.
Tumblr media
The only real standouts are the tombs that you raid outside of the main story. These are generally nice, contained puzzles and put all of your different skills to use. Then it’s back to the combat and parkour and whatever else.
The ‘Almost Perfect Temperature’ Award For Very Nearly Best Game
Octopath Traveller
I reviewed this at the start of January, meaning it technically qualified for the awards this year. At the time I probably thought of it as a game of the year candidate. Unfortunately, possibly down to the fact that I thought I reviewed it in 2018, I didn’t really consider it for this year. Still, it’s a damn good old school RPG. Of course, it has all the usual positives and negatives of a game that deliberately emulates an older time. It can be very grindy, but also challenging when it comes to the boss fights.
Tumblr media
What the older games didn’t have was a high production value. Octopath Traveler looks great, sounds great and has some great writing there too. Its characters all have their own questlines and motivations that, in some cases at least, end pretty satisfyingly. I do wish they all linked together more though.
Well that’s the final load of awards. Time to get on with the year and generate some new ones!

April 2020 Music Roundup
Tumblr media
Enter Shikari - Nothing is True and Everything Is Possible
Enter Shikari is a top 5 band for me, so I was extremely excited for this. Luckily, it doesn’t disappoint. After a ton of albums, Enter Shikari prove to be getting even better at songwriting, branching into pop territory and leaning even heavier into electronics than before. Not much to say about this one except it’s fucking great.
Favorite Songs: Modern Living Satellites** Marionettes (I+II)
Tumblr media
Gaytheist - How Long Have I Been on Fire?
I had never heard of this Portland, Oregon trio before this album. I randomly stumbled across them on Metalsucks when they did an album preview. I was instantly hooked by this album’s blend of punk, noise, irony, and humor. Dying to see them live when everything is back to normal. No song overstays its welcome. It’s funny, fast, and very fitting for the times we’re in. Favorite Songs: The Dark Deep Dental Records Border Patrol
Tumblr media
The Black Dahlia Murder - Verminous
Only took me 7 albums to finally check this band out and I see myself digging dipper into their catalog after this one. Killer solos, amazing bass tone, all around good Death Metal.
Favorite Songs: Godlessly Child of Night Dawn of Rats
Tumblr media
August Burns Red - Guardians It’s a true testament to just how good August Burns Red is that they’ve never put out a bad album in a genre that is known for being ultra repativive. I get pessimistic every time I hear they are about to release a new album thinking this will finally be the one that doesn’t grab me. Fortunately, ABR prove me wrong every time and just become better and better at what they do upon each release.
Favorite Songs Bones Lighthouse Three Fountains Extinct by Instinct
Side note: I’m digging Carpenter Brut’s new soundtrack “Blood Machines”, but I’m going to give it a few more listens and watch the film before I have my full opinion, which is why it isn’t listed this month. Seems good so far, though!
Singles:
Billy Talent - I Beg to Differ Orville Peck - Summertime  The Ghost Inside - Aftermath PUP - Anaphylaxis

Carpenter Brut - Leather Teeth
Track list:
Leather Teeth
Cheerleader Effect
Sunday Lunch
Monday Hunt
Inferno Galore
Beware the Beast
Hairspray Hurricane
End Titles
Again this is another band I’d never imagine giving the time of day for, but just lately with bands like Gost, Skrillex, Dead By April and Knife Party opening me up to extreme crossovers I find myself here. Caught these guys opening up the metal hammer golden god awards this year and instantly added this to my wish list for when I go home.
“Monday Hunt” feels like a blend of 80’s rock guitar thrown over the Sonic The Hedgehog soundtrack grated over an Ibiza club track. “Sunday Lunch” is quite a strange one in all honesty, at times it could be on one of the dance club stations from GTA Vice City but then again could also be an 80’s pop jazz fusion or a theme song to one of those old dramatic TV cop shows from back in the day. When “Hairspray Hurricane” kicks in I truly and honestly believed that it was “Take On Me” from back in the day, then quickly discover it is not which I’m not sure whether to be disappointed or relieved. “End Titles” I really like and a closing song mostly because the name is appropriate and the nature of the track is winding down from what we’ve been exposed to for the rest of the album.
On the surface this just seems like it would be a bit of a mess, the reality of it though is that it works quite well as a composition and having seen it live it does come across with the visuals they displayed on the screens, however I don’t think I would pay to go and see this live I would definitely pay for the music though to blast through the sound system for when I was throwing a party, that is where this music would thrive.
