For #throwbackthursday I'd like to share with you two of the prettiest villages in Italy; both are situated in the province of Savona in Liguria, both are incredibly charming, but both so very different architecturally speaking. The first one is Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena — what a name! Perched on a mountain at 1,100 metres above sea level, Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena is a medieval pearl in 'Val Neva' ('Neva Valle') and lies 18km from the coastal town of Albenga. When I arrived in this striking village, dominated by the manor castle that's still privately owned, I wasn't prepared for the awesome autumnal colours of the leaves that adorned the labyrinthine streets — especially in December! The best advice I can give when visiting Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena is not to be afraid of getting absolutely lost; rather, wander around the old cluster of timeless buildings, all supported by a succession of vaults and arches, and immerse yourself in the tortuous alleys to discover the traces of the history of the village. I used the imposing castle as my point of reference. When you feel like you've seen enough – in my case a couple of hours – I'd recommend following a trail called 'Il Sentiero di Ilaria del Carretto', a scenic route that will take you all the way down to another beautiful village in the valley called Zuccarello. If you have your back to the castle as shown in the fourth photo and follow the path down, you'll see a signpost for the trail. It's long but downhill. You can get to Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena from Albenga by bus ('TPL Linea').
