Catalina is a twenty-year old Bolivian-American college student who is majoring in anthropology. In regards to Ramon specifically, they first met when he was born in the year of 1984. The 8th's "strange disease" ( In The Japanese Localization ) was inherited genetically & the very same illness that claimed his grandfather Alejandro, who fell to an untimely death. Los Illuminados' return to the mainland was ultimately the result of Catalina wishing to preserve the life of her only child from an otherwise incurable ailment.

Osmund, like Ramon, was despised by the population for being born different --- this being amplified tenfold with The 7th's Queen betrayal & Ramon becoming a LITERAL mutant, on top of his disabilities. It should be no surprise that the community of Valdelobos ( besides Los Illuminados worship ) had an innate disgust with the disabled, mental or physical, as anything outside of the norm would potentially be perceived as deformed or the defilement of demons. "The Devil" being welcomed out of exile to cure Ramon was the final nail in the coffin, which more or less led the boy straight into his arms not even a decade later, willingly.

Anyone familiar with the remake should know that Ramon was horrifically abused by his own biological father, to the point where he wished to kill his own son for being born sickly & an aforementioned "demon-child". Osmund using this as leverage to gain his loyalty I don't believe was really necessary, as Los Illuminados was already an established enemy of The Salazar's --- Ramon was entirely aware of their existence & the genocide his ancestry committed, then continued. Osmund absolutely manipulated him to an extent, but granted Ramon desired the death of his own biological father regardless, it was minimal. If Lord Saddler was not eventually responsible for Diego's death, Ramon absolutely would have been, without a doubt.

I believe Osmund hearing Catalina's plight was his only genuine show of "humanity", despite his blessing utterly robbing a soul of that. From his point of view, blessing another with Las Plagas IS a show of kindness, granted his role as a faith healer & missionary. Although he was the key to releasing the seal initially, he was not set aside after all was said & done. Lord Saddler actually held Ramon in a respectable regard, going as far for The Castellan to believe that The Lord was his "true father" all along.

Replaceable as Ramon is as a subordinate, I truly think Osmund harbors some "love" for the boy, in his own way, considering he was raised solely by him since he was about 8 years old --- an act that was NEVER necessary. The director & Ramon's own voice actor confirmed that in the script, it was suggested that he was essentially adopted & treated as his own. Osmund has known Ramon more than he has known his own biological parents --- & with how highly he speaks of him, I can almost guarantee he is spared from any harsh treatment. If anything, I'm willing pin that Ramon is spoiled lavishly by Lord Saddler. I surmise granted they share trauma by the very same institution, they understand each other better more than anyone & have a much deeper bond than what Lord Saddler might have with Chief Mendez or Major Krauser.

Their relationship as father / son, however, also breaches into a very strange, upsetting but understandable dynamic, with Ramon wishing to play "catch up" with Lord Saddler, as his childhood was essentially devoid of any affection. Ramon admits so himself in his personal diary ( Japanese Localization ) that he loves to sit on Osmund's lap, his head being patted / caressed like he is a little boy --- despite being an adult. Granted Osmund was born in the midst of a violent civil war between two religious institutions, I doubt he had the time or interest to sire an heir himself --- Thus, Ramon receives very preferential treatment & leniency as his servant.

𝐓𝐋𝐃𝐑: Osmund's fatherly relationship with Ramon is extremely weird, but bound tightly by generational trauma, prejudice & abuse inflicted upon by the same religious institution.

Ok, just finished my Ashley/Salazar short story. Going to post the epilogue in full here too since its short and I don't think there's anything here that's too objectionable. If you enjoyed, please consider leaving kudos on the work on AO3, and a comment if you're up to it!

Wounds: Epilogue

She sat in the university's atrium, alone on a bench, twisting the thick gold band on her finger from side to side, a habit she’d formed over the weeks and months since. This ring… It was to her a reminder of the evil in the world—but also, the good. It didn’t look like modern jewelry by any stretch of the imagination—more so that it belonged in a museum behind thick glass. 

The opulent central diamond was surrounded by a ring of pearls. On the inside of the band, engraved in fine, delicate script were two names. One, ‘María Isabel’, and the other ‘Catalina’. It seemed the ring had been passed down through the Salazar family. Had Ramón really just given her such a priceless heirloom?

Perhaps with Lord Saddler’s blessing, you will be returned to me once this is all over… My darling…

Ramón’s words echoed through the recesses of her mind, amazed that she could recall his voice and his words so clearly, all things considered…

She’d really meant that much to him…

Something deep inside her wrenched and then wavered before subsiding. A thousand different thoughts and feelings were conjured up, competing against one another. Her mind was buzzing with all she wanted to relate to someone else, but couldn’t.

After the plaga had been removed she’d gotten off the operating table and stood and walked on her own feet, like nothing had ever happened. How she felt inside, however, was indescribable—there was relief, yes, but she was also bent, almost to the point of nearly being undone as she tried to put on a cheerful face for Luis and Leon’s benefit.

The general public remained blissfully unaware of the dangers Los Illuminados could have posed, though Leon would go on to write a confidential report that would make its rounds among groups committed to fighting bioterrorism.

Back in the United States, her life resumed as it had been. She returned to her university, her sorority, and her friends. She was forever changed, and everyone else was none the wiser. The whole ordeal had come and gone so quickly that not even her friends were aware she had been missing. Not that she’d dare breathe a word of what had happened. Who would believe her?

She made her best attempt to settle back in. Life became predictable again. The time she’d spent with Ramón might have been mistaken for a fever dream if she were not wearing the ring he’d placed on her finger.

How odd it was… That one crazy, long-ago night in Spain had seemed endless at the time, full of the most intense fear and dread she’d ever experienced. Now there were countless nights she would give anything to get back on that sofa.

Radiant sunlight poured down through the high glass ceiling as if the sun had been partially obscured by thick cloud cover moments before. Presently, she stopped fidgeting with the ring and glanced up again at her surroundings.

The only sound was the gentle trickle of the fountain in the center of the atrium. It was quiet and peaceful this time of day, which was one of the reasons she would frequent this place in between classes. And because it reminded her so much of the castle garden she’d been so captivated by under the moonlight.

She breathed deeply and reached for her laptop sitting next to her on the bench. Strange… She’d never been very creative before, nor much of a writer, but now she felt a hundred stories brimming inside her. She’d even enrolled in a creative writing course—quite a deviation from the business degree she was pursuing. Perhaps she’d become a novelist instead of following in her father’s footsteps. Would he be disappointed?

Tonight, like most nights, she’d crawl into bed, the end of a long day of classes and studying, with a pad of paper and write until she felt her eyelids growing heavy. She’d write everything from the sweetest romance to stuff that would probably make Ramón blush.

For him, she would write, and she would live. That was how she would honor what she’d lost. She would write about different lives and scenarios, different identities. She liked to think of them as the lives they might have spent together if they hadn’t been hindered by distance, illness, or a parasite-worshiping cult—or the most damning of all: death. She could not publish anything she had experienced in Spain, but there were no rules against writing fiction.

Ashley sighed.

Ramón… You deserve a thousand first-class scripts.

Tapping her fingers against her desk, Catalina stared at her phone, resisting the urge to check it for what must have been at least the hundredth time. In the years she'd been working for Nina's family, she'd met with Nina sometimes several days a week...remotely. This day, however, Cat had been asked to meet in person, which put her on edge. Would Nina come all this way for a run of the mill meeting? And if it wasn't a normal meeting, would Catalina be walking out of it?

Her job came with a significantly higher risk since she'd started working for a crime syndicate, something she was reminded of often. But the pay also awarded a level of luxury that couldn't be beat, and Catalina was damn good at what she did. Flipping her phone over, she looked at the blank screen before standing. Someone downstairs was supposed to call her when Nina arrived, but maybe Cat would just go wait for her.

DUMAGUETE, NEGROS ORIENTAL -- The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) will hold a joint coordinating conference related to the proposed postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections 2023 (BSKE) in the town of Dumaguete and a municipal province of Negros Oriental were all presided with COMELEC chairman named George Erwin Mojica Garcia, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Benjamin Casuga Acorda Jr. and chief of staff in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) - Gen. Andres Castor Centino.

A localized public hearing will be held from June 27th-29th, 2023 starting at 8am and 2pm (Dumaguete local time) in some selected places in the province.

Cluster 1 begins to Canlaon, Vallerhermoso, Guihulngan, La Libertad and Jimalalud. Cluster 2 will be implemented in Tayasan, Ayungon, Bindoy, Manjuyod and Mabinay. There will also be a public hearing for Cluster 3 in Bais, Pamplona, Tanjay, Amlan and San Jose. Cluster 4 includes Sibulan, Dumaguete, Valencia, Bacong and Dauin; while the last one ends in Cluster 5 are the municipal places in Zamboanguita, Siaton, Santa Catalina, Bayawan and Basay.

Here in Cluster 4, the scheduled public hearing on the postponement of the BSKE will begin locally at 2pm at the Lamberto L. Macias Sports and Cultural Complex in Brgy. Taclobo, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental and it will be streamed LIVE and exclusive on Facebook. This is to give way to give voices and to end public election violence per the assassination of the late Dumaguete governor Roel Ragay Degamo against a suspected murder mastermind and suspended Negros Oriental congressman Arnulfo "Arnie" Alipit Teves Jr.

The rest of our nation will continue to vote for BSKE, once its later approved by the COMELEC.

Diego Salazar is imperative to Lord Saddler's backstory & reasoning for his world ending justification, but for more reasons than you might believe. Not EVERYTHING revolves around Ramon or Catalina, & that will be explored below under a read-more for distressing themes:

To begin, Diego was the reigning monarch who was responsible for the death of multiple Saddler prophets ; Speculated, but realistically included in that, Osmund's own mother & father. The 7th was noted to be as severe as his predecessor Gregorio The 1st, who initially colonized & genocided The Illuminados population that first called Valdelobos home. Los Ganados ( Parasitized People ) were ruthlessly culled to the point a bastardized offshoot of Catholicism was born, in which they were depicted as demons, naturally sacrificed to YHWH. This religion was more or less indistinguishable from Catholicism in the belief of Christ, Mary & Saints, etc. --- but having a gruesome, maddening obsession with exorcising / killing "demons" & the obliteration of apostates / heresy. This same obsession & paranoia was inevitably passed down to Pueblo, hence the frescos nearby the lake / mural caves depicting the sacrifice of Ganado & altars requiring blood sacrifices.

Recall those statues with the removable heads of the apostate & blasphemer that would bleed? Yeah, that wasn't the work of Los Illuminados... that was the work of the reigning religion PRIOR their resurgence! It is important to note that Diego's lineage was not only built upon the destruction of Illuminados heresy, but the heresy of other religions that differed from Catholicism as well. The Salazar's were initially soldiers sent on behalf of The Inquisition to uphold state-mandated Catholicism & to expel heretics from their own lands... or to execute.

It isn't confirmed if this is due to underlying Las Plagas exposure, cultural expectations or an inheritable condition, but four Salazar monarchs were known to be afflicted with madness akin to psychopathy or sociopathy, having an inclination to abuse & torture... perhaps uncontrollably. This was seen in Gregorio The 1st, Gregorio The 3rd ( Architect of Torture devices / Death machines ), Diego The 7th & Ramon The 8th. It is also noted that The Garrador(s) prior Las Plagas infection also had an inclination to torture / kill & was passed generationally to the horror of others ; "He [Garrador] was originally a torture officer who served the castle lord. His father, his grandfather, his brothers & cousins. This is one of the negative legacies of the Salazar family."

The stark contrast between The Salazar's & Los Illuminados is that one is under the sway of a mind-controlling parasite & the other is not, being deliberately cruel out of their own free-will. Osmund knew this wholeheartedly & was subject first-hand to the violence of humans, kindness VERY few & far between, the first & only being Catalina Salazar. Osmund's views upon humans being inherently evil is NOT an isolated occurrence & did not spur out of thin air, it was due to generational oppression / enslavement spanning almost a quincentenary & living throughout the most horrific tragedies that have occurred in recent human history --- as well as surviving his own exile / civil war. Lord Saddler is very much a child soldier as other protagonists in the series such as Sheva, Jake & Carlos --- but this is hardly brought into consideration because he is naturally one of the worst antagonists in the franchise.

It is more than likely isolationism was a LEARNED behavior of Las Plagas for their species survival & why they are distrustful or violent towards outsiders. This is not to say that Earth should willingly surrender to the whims of parasitic overlords, but that the parasite itself is naturally a mimic & mimics what it learns. --- If prior hosts of Las Plagas had experienced warmth & acceptance, perhaps their uncontrollable urge to feast & assimilate animals or human beings would've been mitigated. Perhaps The Ndipayan Kingdom never would've fell. Perhaps Los Illuminados would've never been founded. It is truly anyone's guess --- but the ultimate goal of Las Plagas is to propagate & survive like any other species. The difference being that Las Plagas as an organism itself is scarily intelligent with OR WITHOUT a host & straddles the line of sapience.

I could elaborate forever, but Diego was a despicable man. Not only was he a ruthless child abuser, he voluntarily executed his own wife & mother of his child without remorse. This angered Osmund to the point that his death was immortalized as a mural in his own church ; Being decapitated by Lord Saddler's sickle & his headless, unidentifiable body being given a shallow, unceremonious burial. Diego ruthlessly hunted & slaughtered Osmund's people & family for decades, ultimately paying the price in the end.
