Janet Elizabeth Macgregor was born on January 12th 1920 in Glasgow.
Born as Janet Elizabeth McPherson at Lynedoch Place in the cities Hillhead area, you may not have heard of Janet, but in her work she has no doubt saved countless lives as a pioneer of cervical screening.
Betty, as she became known, attended school at Bearsden Academy, going on to study medicine at the University of Glasgow during the Second World War, graduating in 1943.
Betty Macgregor was the cytologist who made northeast Scotland the United Kingdom's first centre for systematic cervical screening. It was because of her published results that screening was taken up throughout the country.
She published important papers on many aspects of screening, including cervical cytology, the epidemiology of cervical cancer, improving the prognosis, cost effectiveness, cervical abnormalities in various subgroups of women, and the problems of false negative results. Her booklet Taking Uterine Cervical Smears, published by the British Society of Clinical Cytology, sold 25 000 copies.
It was not a period when priority was given to such a lengthy and complex medical programme: politicians had other demands on public funds. It was the way Macgregor organised the tests that brought the programme so much renown. Everything was meticulously documented and recorded with great care and attention. After five years she had assembled such powerful scientific evidence that other health authorities throughout the UK immediately adopted her system.
She retired to Isle of Seil. She died of cerebrovascular disease on 8th October 2005 at the Lynn of Lorne Nursing Home, Benderloch, near Oban.

I think so many people/countries would benefit if you guys had Reeling In The Years
For those who are Not Irish (so sorry), RITY is a TV programme we have here in Ireland. It airs every Friday, and each episode details the events of a certain year. They play video clips from that year with subtitles informing the viewer of the context, with both National and international news.
For example, RITY for tonight was 2018. For national news, it discussed the 8th Amendment Referendum which decriminalised abortion in Ireland, the breaking of the Cervical Check scandal where hundreds of Irish women got false negatives during screenings for cervical cancer and were told they were healthy when they in fact had cancer (rip Vicky Phelan), the Papal visit where Pope Francis spoke about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, the Irish presidential election of that year, the record temperatures and forest fires that year, and the formal apology made to Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.
In international terms, there was Meghan Markle/Prince Harry's wedding, Trump's visit to both the UK and meeting with Kim Jong Un, the Brexit deal made with the EU, the forcible separation of immigrant children and parents at the US border, and the rescue of the soccer team from the Thai caves.
I was twelve during 2018. I read the newspapers occasionally and my parents always had the 6 o'clock news on, but generally I didn't really know much about what was going on in the world. The first episode of Reeling In The Years described the events of 1962, and even my parents hadn't been born yet. It is such an important show, because every episode reminds you or teaches you about the past in both Ireland and the wider world.
"Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it" etc etc. Reeling In The Years ensures that Irish people know their past and are informed of what went on in the world, even during years they weren't alive or paying attention. And we need reminders too. The abortion referendum was six years ago, but in an age where abortion laws are under threat in the US and a recent referendum on a woman's place in the home and the definition of care was struck down, we need to remember that we are a country who cared about women, and that we can do it again.
The last episode of Reeling in the Years that I watched was 2016, the year the people of Ireland decided overwhelmingly in favour of allowing gay marriage. I was ten. I didn't even think about boys, let alone girls, but now I care. Now I know the attitudes of the time, the decisions that were made and how they affect me now.
People need to know their past in order to build their future.

good news for women - march 2024
HUGE gains have been made for women's health worldwide!!
among 36 countries receiving world bank funding, there has been a 96% drop in maternal mortality! massive gains have also been made in providing contraception, lowering teen pregnancy, lowering child mortality, and connecting women in rural areas to health clinics! check out this report from the world bank to learn more
The Egyptian government has started cash transfer programs as a social safety net meant to empower women and keep girls out of child marriage. The Takaful part of the program provides monthly conditional cash transfers to poor households with children under 18 years provided they comply with health and education conditionalities. The Karama part of the program provides unconditional cash transfers to the elderly poor, orphans, widows, and persons living with disabilities. As of December 2023, the program has reached 4.67 million households (around 17 million citizens) and 74% of card holders are women.
This change has been widely supported by the French public and was overwhelmingly voted in by lawmakers!!
Though abortion rights are unstable in the United States, some pharmacy retailers are making abortion pills more accessible. Walgreens said it will start by providing the pill in a handful of pharmacies in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California and Illinois. CVS's spokesperson Amy Thibault said it will begin dispensing the pill in all of its pharmacies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island "in the weeks ahead". Both companies said they will focus on rolling out in states where pharmacists are allowed to dispense mifepristone, and will monitor prospects where there are legal challenges to abortion bans or limitations, like Kansas, Montana and Wyoming.
In line with the Global Strategy to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030, WHO, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and partners, in collaboration with the Government of Nigeria, developed and implemented a multi-pronged prevention strategy to protect the lives of girls and women from the deadly disease.  This includes the rollout of a mass HPV vaccination campaign targeting girls aged nine to 14 years to receive a single dose of the vaccine in 16 states. Between October 2023 and January 2024, 4.95 million girls were vaccinated against HPV.

STRATEGIES TO REDUCE INDIA’S CANCER BURDEN: INSIGHTS FROM DR. ASHISH GUPTA
Tumblr media
Why are cancer cases on rise in India?
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Cancer Registry Programme, the number of cancer cases in the country is projected to go up from 14.6 lakh in 2022 to 15.7 lakh in 2025. There are multiple factors responsible for this.
1) Lifestyle Did you know that in India, a significant portion of cancer cases stem from preventable causes? According to the sources, smoking and chewing tobacco alone contributes to 40% of cancer diagnoses, followed by infections at 20%, and poor diet combined with lack of physical activity at 10%. However, additional considerations are involved.
Obesity is a big one. Being overweight significantly increases the risk of developing cancer. Then there’s sun exposure. Spending too much time under the sun or in tanning beds exposes you to harmful UV radiation, raising your chances of getting skin cancer.
Stress, too, plays a role. Experts warn that it can fuel the growth and spread of certain cancer forms. And it doesn’t stop there. Poor diet choices, bad oral hygiene, and exposure to harmful substances in our work and environment like pollution also contribute to the rising cancer rates.
According to Dr Ashish Gupta USA trained, American board-certified medical oncologist, Chief of Medical Oncology, Unique Hospital Cancer Centre, Dwarka India, The most common cancers in India are: breast cancer, oral cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancer. There are regional differences in cancer e.g. gallbladder cancer is much more common in Delhi/North India, Stomach Cancer is highest in South India, Oral Cancers are highest in MP, Gallbladder cancers are highest in UP/Delhi/West Bengal so called Gangetic plain. Much of this variation has to do with exposures to tobacco, alcohol, betel nut chewing, and other environmental exposures.
2) Detection of cancer- With the growth of healthcare facilities, hospitals, diagnostic centers more and more cases of cancer even from the villages are being detected that were previously not found, this is also contributing to increased rates of cancer in India.
3) Increased age of the population – We know that cancer risks increase as the population ages. This is also responsible for increased number of cancer cases How can India reduce its cancer burden?
Mutiple strategies can be undertaken:
Awareness campaigns at the community level in community centers, in schools, in colleges regarding cancer symptoms, risk factors and methods of early detection in the local language.
Conducting screening camps at the rural level with the help of the community health workers for cervical, oral and breast cancer.
Mobile vans- e.g. mammography vans to promote screening of breast cancer
Healthcare Facilities- development of new facilities at every level that can provide these services
Workforce- addressing the shortage of skilled professionals in oncology and other medical staff, investing in training programs and skill development
Research- supporting research initiatives to understand risk factors, patterns and compliance
Public-Private Partnerships
Telemedicine- expanding telemedicine to facilitate remote consultations in rural areas
Education- It plays a key role, with a focus on teaching prevention strategies to students and healthcare professionals alike
Cancer Prevention Nationwide Programs Simple lifestyle adjustments, such as maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, can significantly reduce the risk of certain cancers. Protecting oneself from sun exposure, sexually transmitted infections, and undergoing regular screening tests further enhances prevention efforts. By taking these strategies, individuals can take proactive steps towards a healthier future.
Understanding the Need for Second Opinions in Cancer Treatment Seeking a second opinion in cancer treatment can significantly improve outcomes and boost confidence in treatment decisions. It ensures patients have the right diagnosis, explores alternative treatment options, and confirms the suitability of their treatment plan. I believe every cancer patient should get a second opinion because in cancer the sequence of treatment is important.
Benefits of Second Opinion
Getting a second opinion for your cancer treatment decisions is crucial. Once you begin the treatment and after three or six months, there isn’t much chance of returning. Since cancer treatment is developing at a quick pace, getting a second opinion can be beneficial. New medicines are available almost every week now whereas it used to be months or years before. Another reason why you should think about getting a second opinion is simply because there are numerous clinical trials available in India and other countries that could be helpful to patients.
What is the new approach to cancer treatment?
The new approach to cancer treatment is using modern medicines from the first day to improve the cure of cancer. The new approach is that just like every patient is unique, every cancer is unique and we use personalized medicine to tackle cancer. The most recent developments including immunotherapy, targeted therapy, targeted forms of chemotherapy available as injections and/or even some tablets have greatly increased the cure rates. New medicines are available almost every week now whereas it used to be months or years before. Other techniques including CAR-T therapy, robotic surgery and targeted radiation have also improved outcomes.
These cutting-edge therapies are crucial in ensuring the comprehensive treatment and recovery of patients with different forms of cancer.
What is the role of AI in cancer treatment?
Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role in various aspects of cancer treatment. Firstly, it aids in early cancer detection by analyzing medical images and other data, potentially spotting diseases like pancreatic cancer several years before conventional diagnosis methods. Additionally, AI streamlines treatment planning by swiftly segmenting tumors and organs, significantly reducing the time radiation oncologists need for this task.
Furthermore, AI contributes to drug discovery efforts, making the process more efficient. It also assists in predicting treatment responses and outcomes, as well as advancing personalized medicine. By analyzing complex medical data, AI algorithms such as neural networks and deep learning can provide accurate assessments of clinical conditions, aiding in diagnosis, recurrence, and survival predictions for cancer patients.

The Importance of Early Detection in Successful Cancer Treatment
Cancer is a major global cause of death, which emphasizes how important early detection is to getting the best possible treatment results. Early detection of malignant growths gives patients more options for treatment and better prognoses. Here's why the battle against cancer treatment depends so heavily on early detection.
Tumblr media
Importance of Detection in Cancer Treatment
1. More Treatment Options
Cancer in its early stages is frequently easier to treat and more locallyized. When the disease is discovered at this stage, there is a greater range of treatment choices available, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies, all of which can successfully treat or eradicate the illness.
2. Increased Survival Rates
Research continuously shows that individuals with cancer who have an early diagnosis have a better chance of surviving than those who receive an advanced diagnosis. Prompt treatment beginning is made possible by early identification, which raises the chance of long-term survival and enhances quality of life.
3. Decreased Treatment Intensity
Treatments for early-stage malignancies are usually less aggressive, which leads to fewer difficulties and adverse effects. This lessens the strain on healthcare resources while simultaneously improving the patient's quality of life during treatment.
4. Reduced Healthcare Costs
By lowering the need for complicated and drawn-out therapies, hospital stays, and supporting care services, early cancer identification can result in significant cost savings. Additionally, it reduces production losses brought on by advanced illness stages.
5. Screening Programmes
Early cancer detection, frequently prior to symptom onset, is greatly aided by screening tests and programmes. Mammography is a commonly used screening modality for breast cancer, Pap smear for cervical cancer, and colonoscopy for colorectal cancer. Frequent screening attendance can find anomalies early on, when they are more curable.
6. Public Education and Awareness
Raising people's knowledge of the warning signs and symptoms of cancer motivates them to get help as soon as possible. In order to prevent cancer and discover it early, educational efforts highlight the significance of regular screenings, modifying risk factors, and adopting healthy lifestyle choices.
7. Genetic Testing and Personalised Medicine
Thanks to developments in genetic testing, people who are more susceptible to specific cancers can be identified. Genetic predispositions can be used to customise early detection systems, enabling focused surveillance and preventative measures.
8. Benefits on an Emotional and Psychological Level
Early detection reduces the emotional anguish that comes with late-stage diagnosis in addition to improving physical outcomes. Early diagnosis leads to reduced anxiety and sadness in patients, which promotes a more optimistic attitude on their course of therapy and recovery.
9. Extended Monitoring and Survivorship Care
To identify disease recurrence or new primary malignancies, continuous monitoring is essential even following a successful course of therapy. In order to maximise long-term health results, survivorship care plans include routine follow-up visits, surveillance testing, and support programmes.
Conclusion
Effective cancer treatment still depends heavily on early detection. Through the prioritisation of screening, education, and availability of high-quality healthcare services, we can significantly lower the cancer burden and enhance patient outcomes. Let's work together to combat cancer, beginning with prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Why cancer is increasing in India?
It can be difficult to identify a single cause for the rising rates of cancer in India because there are many variables that can affect cancer incidence rates. But a number of things might be behind the nation's increased cancer incidence:
Population Growth: The population of India is rising steadily. The absolute number of cancer cases would inevitably increase with a larger population.
Population Ageing: The likelihood of getting cancer rises with age. Cancer is more common in older individuals, and as healthcare has improved, more people are living longer, which also raises the prevalence of cancer.
Urbanisation has resulted in changes to the way of life. A poor diet, inactivity, and increased use of alcohol and tobacco are all associated with increased cancer risks.
Use of tobacco: A sizable portion of the population in India uses tobacco. Consuming tobacco in its different forms is a major contributor to the development of multiple cancers, including lung, oral, and throat cancers.Breast, mouth, and cervical cancer are the three leading cancers in India.
Environmental Factors: Air, water, and soil pollution as well as exposure to dangerous chemicals all increase the risk of developing cancer. There could be a connection between industrialization and pollution in densely populated metropolitan areas.
Genetic Variables: Some genetic variations can predispose people to developing cancer. The population of India is diverse, and a person's genetic heritage may affect their propensity to develop cancer.
Lack of Awareness and Early Detection: Cancer is frequently discovered at an advanced stage, which lowers the likelihood of a full recovery. In order to lower the number of deaths from cancer, awareness efforts and early detection programmes are essential.
Limited Access to Healthcare: Access to healthcare services, including cancer screening and treatment, is restricted in several areas of India. When cancer is discovered, more advanced stages may exist due to a lack of an early diagnosis and appropriate medical care.
Infectious Agents: Infections with certain viruses, such as hepatitis B and C and the human papillomavirus (HPV), can raise the chance of getting a certain type of cancer. Cancer rates may be higher in areas where these illnesses are common.
A multimodal strategy is needed to address the rising cancer incidence in India, including public health initiatives to increase awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, and lifestyle changes. The burden of cancer in the nation must also be decreased by measures to reduce cigarette use, promote healthcare accessible, and improve air and water quality.

The NHS vaccination programme to prevent cervical cancer has so far stopped hundreds of women from developing the disease and thousands from experiencing pre-cancerous changes to cells, a study has found.
In the first proof that the programme is working to save lives, the Cancer Research UK-funded study found that cervical cancer rates in women offered the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine between the ages of 12 and 13 (now in their 20s) were 87% lower than in an unvaccinated population.
Researchers said cases in this age group, which are rare, dropped from about 50 per year to just five.
There were also reductions in cervical cancer rates of 62% in women offered vaccination between the ages of 14 and 16, and 34% in women aged 16 to 18 when vaccination was introduced.
87% Cervical cancer rates in women offered the vaccine between ages of 12-13
Experts looked at data from the HPV immunisation programme using the vaccine Cervarix, which was given to girls on the NHS from 2008 to September 2012.
A different vaccine, Gardasil, is now used for the programme, and is given to girls and boys aged 12 and 13.
The new study was able to use data to estimate that, by June 2019, there were around 450 fewer cases of cervical cancer (down to 374 cases in 2016-2018) and 17,200 fewer cases of cervical carcinomas (pre-cancers) than expected in those vaccinated against HPV in England.
The study found a 97% drop in pre-cancerous changes to cells in women vaccinated between the ages of 12 and 13, 75% in women vaccinated between the ages of 14 and 16, and 39% in women vaccinated between the ages of 16 and 18.
Without vaccination, experts believe the toll for pre-cancerous changes could have affected almost 36,000 women.
The researchers said the findings, published in The Lancet medical journal, provide the first direct worldwide evidence of prevention of cervical cancer using a vaccine for two types of HPV, which is the virus that causes it.
97% Drop in pre-cancerous changes to cells in women vaccinated between the ages of 12 and 13
Cancer Research UK said the findings were better than expected and that cervical cancer could become a rare disease thanks to vaccines combined with screening.
Professor Peter Sasieni, lead study author, from King’s College London, said: “It’s been incredible to see the impact of HPV vaccination and now we can prove it prevented hundreds of women from developing cancer in England.
“We’ve known for many years that HPV vaccination is very effective in preventing particular strains of the virus, but to see the real-life impact of the vaccine has been truly rewarding.
“Assuming most people continue to get the HPV vaccine and go for screening, cervical cancer will become a rare disease.
“This year we have already seen the power of vaccines in controlling the Covid-19 pandemic. These data show that vaccination works in preventing some cancers.”
Dr Vanessa Saliba, consultant epidemiologist for UKHSA, which also took part in the study, said: “These remarkable findings confirm that the HPV vaccine saves lives by dramatically reducing cervical cancer rates among women.
“We encourage all who are eligible for the HPV vaccine to take it up when it is offered in school. All those eligible can catch up until their 25th birthday.
“Together with cervical screening, this will help to protect more women from preventable cases of cervical cancer.”
Cancer Research UK chief executive Michelle Mitchell said: “Results like this show the power of science.
“It’s a historic moment to see the first study showing that the HPV vaccine has and will continue to protect thousands of women from developing cervical cancer.”
At the moment in the UK, around 3,200 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year.
The study looked in detail at cancer registry data between January 2006 and June 2019 for seven groups of women who were between the ages of 20 and 64 at the end of 2019.
The National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) run by NHS Digital also took part in the study.
