International Firefighters’ Day
Firefighters put their lives on the line every day to save our lives, loved ones, homes, and even forests and cities, so give them the thanks they deserve.
The role of a firefighter in today’s society–be it urban, rural, natural environment, volunteer, career, industrial, defense force, aviation, motorsport, or other is one of dedication, commitment, and sacrifice–no matter what country we reside and work in. In the fire service, we fight together against one common enemy–fire–no matter what country we come from, what uniform we wear or what language we speak. -  LT JJ Edmondson, firefighter, and creator of Firefighters Day
Nobody could have put what it means to be a firefighter as well as this courageous woman did. Most of us would risk our lives for those we love—family members, friends, pets. But could you imagine risking severe injury or even death for someone whom you don’t know at all? Could you imagine going into a burning building to rescue a stranger, knowing you may not come out?
Could you imagine climbing a tree in a burning forest just to save a defenseless animal too frightened to come down on its own? These are things firefighters do every day, and though we likely see them as acts of pure heroism, for firefighters, they’re just part of the job. Few people deserve to be celebrated as much as these heroic men and women do, so let’s all make sure to celebrate Firefighters Day in their honor!
History of International Firefighters’ Day
The first organized professionals whose job it was to combat structural fires lived in Ancient Egypt–however, at the time, firefighters worked for private companies that provided their services only to those who could afford them. Later, in Ancient Rome, Ceasar Augustus revolutionized firefighting by calling for the creation of a fire guard, called the Vigiles, that was trained, paid, and equipped by the state.
Firefighters Day was created in 1999 after 5 firefighters died tragically during a wildfire in Australia when the direction of the wind changed suddenly and engulfed them in flames. It is celebrated on May 4th because that is Saint Florian’s day, and Saint Florian, who was said to be one of the first commanding firefighters of an actual Roman battalion and saved many lives, is the patron saint of firefighters.
The incident that led to the creation of this date happened on the 2nd of December, 1998, in Linton Community, Australia. The event was so tragic that it shook the entire world. Linton is a populated area in Victoria, Australia, and firefighters at the time were tackling a massive bush fire. They called for mutual aid. This resulted in the Geelong West Fre Brigade coming to the scene. They did not know the tragedy and despair that was awaiting them.
Matthew Armstrong, Jason Thomas, Stuart Davidson, Chris Evans, and Garry Vredeveldt all loaded into a truck. They were sent to help extinguish the flames as part of a strike team. However, as they made their way into the hot zone, the wind switched direction suddenly, which resulted in the truck being engulfed in flames, with all five members losing their lives. It was an extremely tragic event, and it resulted in the birth of a day to celebrate firefighters and everything they do for us. After all many other firefighters have lost their lives in the field.
The symbol of International Firefighters’ Day
The International Firefighters’ Day has a significant symbol associated with it, and this is the blue and red ribbon. The ribbon is cut precisely to one cm in width and five cm in length, with the two different colors join at the top. Blue and red were selected by JJ Edmondson because of the symbolization associated with the colors. Blue is designed to represent water whereas the red represents fire. Not only this, but the two colors are also recognized around the world as a symbol for the emergency services. Therefore, it was decided that there was no better color choice!
The ribbon is typically worn on the fold of the fabric on a shirt, i.e. the lapel. However, it is not restricted to a certain spot. You can wear it wherever you feel appropriate, be it a different part of your shirt or your cap, for example. A lot of people also place them from their car mirrors or windows, as well as the trees in their garden. No matter whether you decide to place these ribbons, they represent a simple yet effective way of showing your support for firefighters all around the world.
How to celebrate International Firefighters’ Day
There are many great ways to celebrate firefighters on this day. Most of all, this day is about showing our appreciation for their service, risks, and sacrifice, so find a way to make sure your local firefighters know how much you value them! As always, it’s the thought that counts and small gestures go a long way, so even bringing a cake down to the fire hall would be a nice thing to do. You could also consider donating money to one of the many firefighter charities out there, some of which help firefighters injured in the line of duty get the medical treatment they need and return to health.
Other firefighter charities help retired firefighters live comfortable lives after years of risks they took for others. You can also raise awareness about the dangers firefighters bravely face every day by wearing a red and blue ribbon—the colors of water and fire, respectively. There are also a lot of different craft projects that you can enjoy on Firefighters Day that are based on the symbol of the day. Wearing a ribbon, baking a cake or donating a few dollars to a charity may not seem like particularly impressive gestures to you, but they will likely mean the world to those who work tirelessly for their communities.
You could also use this time to educate yourself about some of the heroic acts of firefighters, whether in your area or around the world. All you need to do is a quick search on the Internet and you will be able to read about some amazing heroic firefighter stories. This includes heroes who have risked their lives to save newborn babies from burning buildings, as well as the firefighters who have been involved in high-profile incidents that have happened around the world, with the tragic Grenfell Tower fire and the Australian bush fires being two of the most recent tragedies. Pay tribute to the amazing firefighters as well as those who have tragically lost their lives.
Show the firefighters of the world a little gratitude and celebrate Firefighters Day with us!

I know I don’t talk about the positives much but I have gone to some truly wonderful treatment centers. It’s really hard to navigate the good ones from the bad. Ed treatment reviews blog is a good place to start, so is asking around.
But here are some red flags I’ve personally noticed. 🚩
-Almost any place that uses horses in their brochures and websites or offers horse therapy ( iykyk)
- if they won’t give much clear info regarding billing ( these places are truly just focused on profit and don’t give a shit about anything else)
- if a place has recently been acquired by a new company / merged. ( see above)
- anyplace that appears to have high staff turnover rate

Picking a Decent Platform For Forex Trading
While we have an enormous number of individuals going into Forex exchanging consistently, a colossal level of beginners scarcely approach experienced people to put them through the quick and dirty of the exchange so they can get going on a sound balance... what's more, when I say experienced people I don't mean individuals who, having drilled demo Forex exchanging for under a half year or live exchanging for scarcely a year, emerge to guarantee skill in a market where even those with north of 5 years experience don't make a case for such accomplishment. Various internet based Forex trading company present their merchants with stages that are cumbersome and challenging to utilize. For this situation you frequently figure out yourself spending a lot of opportunity attempting to sort out some way to set up a straightforward exchange instead of assessing and dissecting the market and going with choices concerning what your ensuing exchange will be.
Then again, utilizing an earth shattering point of interaction, the best stage for Forex puts all the Forex devices that improve on your estimations right readily available. With such Forex merchants, the catch is tied in with giving better Forex exchanging environment than each dealer, Forex instructional exercises, uncommon assortment of Forex exchanging devices as well as live streaming news/reports, monetary occasion schedules and an unreasonable practice mode account with live Forex rates so you can trial and test out exchanging fields prior to exchanging with genuine cash.
Best internet based Forex stages similarly consolidate Forex exchanging with a web 2.0 local area focused approach. Master Forex stage and intermediaries make a thriving Forex people group around private and public visits and conversation gatherings, that empower you to speak and discuss Forex with peers from around from one side of the planet to the other. You can also look at and investigate the most in vogue/famous matches being exchanged by their highest level brokers, and take advantage of their insight to your advantage!

Too many big brothers
Characters: Kelly Severide x Sibling!Reader, most characters from 51
Warnings: Overprotective brother figures.
Summary: Going on a date shouldn't be this hard but, your firehouse family make sure it is.
A/N: I wanted more grrr but it might've been too much so I stopped. Sorry for any mistakes, I did not proofread this. Anyways, thoughts???????????
*****
Your cheeks were hurting way too much from how long you'd been smiling, your stomach in stitches from how much you'd been laughing in such a short amount of time.
Over the past week or so, you and your lab partner had been talking and hanging around at school much more than usual. It was a total shock when he approached you this morning at your locker if you wanted to go out to the movies with him and you accepted. Dylan was also decently attractive and shared your sense of humour, making your decision much easier than it would've been.
He offered to walk you home but you had to say no, explaining that you were being picked up but that only resulted in him keeping you company till your drive arrived. Your friends waved goodbye, giggling with smug smiles on their faces, saying things along the lines of having fun and how cute you two looked together.
Very rudely interrupting your conversation, stopping you mid laugh and Dylan mid story was the very familiar sounds of sirens and the honks from none other than a firetruck.
Low and behold, parked right in front of the school was not just one but three red trucks and an ambulance, all the inhabitants poking their heads out so they could wave and shout at you.
Immediately, all eyes were on the firefighters and you, knowing exactly who they were here for. You could say that you were known as the girl who had too much of the CFD behind her.
Groaning, you glared at your older brother who was laughing with no shame at all. No longer were they honking since they got your attention but their shenanigans remained.
"I'm so sorry about them." You apologised, hating that they interrupted them. Collecting your bag, you got to your feet and sent an apologetic smile to Dylan.
"I'll see you at six." Dylan confirmed with you, waving at you as you left and walked towards the squad truck, reciprocating his wave as you did so.
With all your attention now ahead of you, you glared and tutted at your family. "Ha ha, very funny. Thanks a lot."
"Your very welcome." Matt said, nodding at you in appreciation of your thanks. All of the guys and even the girls on ambo looked very proud of themselves for the scene they caused. "It's always a pleasure."
"You guys can stop now, you made your point." You said, opening the door, accepting Cruz's hand to help you up. "You couldn't help yourself, could you?"
"We just love you too much." "Just doing our job." "Your welcome." The squad members said in sync, snickering at your sour pout.
"Tony, just drive." You scowled, smacking your older brother on the arm but doing no damage, only causing the men to fall into another round of laughter.
*****
"So, who was that boy we saw you sitting with?" Was the first thing that was said the second everyone got back to the firehouse. They were all still getting out of their gear and weren't messing around.
You tried to act oblivious, coming across confused at the mention of the boy that kept you company but you failed big time. Upon trying to escape, you were trapped in the middle of a big circle of men that you never once found intimidating in your life but being the centre of attention brought an unnatural amount of nerves.
"Him? He's absolutely no one." You scoffed, shaking your head in denial. "We're just lab partners but that doesn't matter. He doesn't matter, trust me."
You were one hundred percent sure you weren't going to break under pressure but a single glance at Kelly's raised brow and you crumbled. "His name's Dylan."
"And does Dylan have no other friends?" Kelly asked, further prompting you to spill all the details despite knowing where this conversation was going.
You stuttered, unsure of what to say and how you were going to explain yourself. Even with your older brothers dating history, he cared very much about yours and refused to let any boy near you in fear of what would happen to you.
Luckily, this firehouse had been blessed with three amazing women who came to your rescue, saving you from the interrogation that was taking place. Grabbing onto your arms, you were pulled away and taken into the bunk room where you'd be safe for the time being.
Sighing in relief, you repeatedly thanked your saviours for their gracious act but as soon as the door was closed, the three woman sat you down on a bed and gathered around you with knowing smiles. You really couldn't escape this time.
"He wants to take me out to the movies tonight."
And the three practically screamed, muffling their volumes beneath their hands. They were elated that you were finally going out with a boy for the first time in your life. Not only that but being the only female figures in your life, they had the pleasure of helping you with everything.
"What time is he picking you up at?"
"I think he said six."
Oh how the glance they shared sent you so much nerves.
*****
You tried your hardest to leave without anyone noticing you. Being as stealthy as possible, you slipped down the corridors without anyone noticing, the girls sending you big smiles and thumbs up for encouragement but as soon as you got onto the app flour, you were caught.
You could see Dylan standing on the pavement outside where you told him you two would meet but alas, nothing was as easy as you wished it was.
"Would you look at the time? Six already, wow." Cruz said aloud, his attention very obviously diverted from the card game being played. The girls obviously couldn't keep a secret, especially when it concerned you.
Internally, you groaned, cursing the women's horrible ability to keep a secret. From where you stood, Dylan could see you and waved but instead of you going towards him, you reluctantly gestured him to come into the firehouse.
Poor boy was clueless, walking into the firehouse being totally oblivious as to what was happening.
"Dylan, this is my older brother Kelly." You introduced your brother with a tight lipped smile.
Kelly's face was stern, standing in front of the boy very intimidatingly, his arms crossed as if to make a strict first impression. Clearly, he was successful because Dylan felt clammy, shrinking under his glare.
In that very short time frame, everyone gathered round and stood behind Kelly, looking all sorts of scary and intimidating. The message being sent was received very quickly by your lab partner.
"What are your plans with my sister Dylan?" Kelly plainly asked, the question being very straight forward and simple.
"We're um going to the movies, probably get something to eat and bring her straight back here sir." Dylan replied nervously, his eyes flickering to all the firefighters.
Kelly hummed, his eyes not breaking contact with Dylan's. The tension was thick and continued to rise which you hated but you had to let everyone get everything out before you left.
"Come ere." Kelly said, gesturing Dylan to come forward, shocking you. With his arm now around his shoulder, Dylan was brought towards the rest of your family and you understood what was happening.
"Alright kids, have fun." Kelly's demeanour suddenly flipped as he clapped Dylan on the back, pushing him towards you.
Dylan was shaking in fear, almost on the verge of running away had his plans for the rest of the evening not consisted of hanging out with you.
Every single member of your family happily bid you goodbye, wishing you a wonderful night but the second you turned around, they all glared at Dylan's back, burning holes into his head.
"I'm so sorry about them. They're all family and are just a tad bit protective over me."
"Yeah, I can see that."
*****
To say you had a good night was an understatement. For your first date, it was pretty amazing and despite the minor hiccup earlier on, Dylan proved that he was worthwhile.
It was pitch black outside, the few lights coming from the firehouse and the street lamps lit up the street. Dylan and you were walking up the drive with your hand in his where it had been for a while now.
"Thank you." You said, a soft smile painting your glossy lips. "I'd love to do it again sometime."
"Give me a time and date, I'll be there." Dylan replied, reciprocating your smile. With your hand still in his, the vibe was clearly there but you weren't too sure if he caught onto it.
Very slowly, the two of you inched closer to each other but before anything could happen, you were interrupted by a throat clearing.
Somehow, you hadn't noticed the lieutenant and Captain smoking their cigars in their usual spots and for once, everyone remained inside, most likely getting some shut eye before the bells rung.
Kelly rose a brow, challenging Dylan to go any further and Matt was completely monotone but his captain jacket alone was scary enough.
Dylan nodded, reluctantly letting go of your hand but before you could walk away from him, he grabbed your wrist and pecked your cheek before quickly rushing off. Looking over his shoulder, he only looked at you. "See you at school tomorrow!"
Heat rushed up to your cheeks, not fully registering that he kissed you but your older brother and your older brother figure knew exactly what happened and they weren't too sure if they liked what they saw.
"You guys need to stop." You shook your head, failing to keep a straight face and smiling. You couldn't help yourself no matter how much you hated their overprotective behaviour.
"It's our job as your big brothers." Kelly said speaking for everyone as he squished up in his chair, gesturing for your to squeeze in like you used to as a kid which you did without question, resting your head on his shoulder.
"We won't be so easy on him next time."

It would be a Connor Rhodes one where you're his assistant and you're both having feelings for each other. One time you see him laughing with Ava and fear You'll never be good enough for him. So you go out to Molly's and later Connor finds you there with a guy and gets jealous. So he grabs you and kisses you passionately. You then go home with him and you end up in bed. Later then you cuddle and he finally asks you to be his girl ? I really hope this is fine 😊
A/N: omg I finally finished it, after weeks of not knowing what to write. I hope you like it
Connor Rhodes x fem!reader
Words: 1341
You let out a sign as your eyes fell on Connor talking to Ava in the hallway. You really thought there was a chance for you two, but seeing him laughing like that with her, made your stomach twist.
Sure you had no reason to be jealous, he wasn't yours after all, but you worked with him for hours every single day. You've spent a lot of time with him and often found yourself in critical situations. Also the relationship you two had, didn't make things easier. Aside from the constant friendly teasing and making jokes about each other, you two were the perfect team if you had to be.
But you knew, you wouldn't ever get a chance, he was your boss after all. The one who's responsible for your doings and don't forget the age difference. It wasn't much, but people definitely would comment on it.
Also the man had the perfect reputation, he was a celebrity under the doctors and everyone knew him, but no one seemed to recognize your abilities. You would never be good enough.
----
That evening you chose to go out for the night and forget about your exploded hopes of ever getting together with Connor. You wanted to find someone else to spend the night with, to keep you occupied.
----
As you entered Mollys, the bar was packed. Members of the CFD, CPD and the med were all together in this small space, but there also were some people who didn't belong to any of those. People who didn't know you and it seemed like that was your chance.
You made your way over to the front of the bar to order something to drink.
"Hey Herman, the usual please." You said to the firefighter behind the bar.
"Got you." He said as he handed you the drink.
Just as you wanted to walk towards an empty seat, a man you have never met approached you. The two of you started a conversation and after making sure he wasn't a creep, you told yourself that he was the one you wanted to go home with tonight. After a few more drinks, you asked him to step outside for a bit.
The two of you exited the bar and stood next to the door, as the stranger, called Nick as you learned, lit up a cigarette. You didn't mind people smoking, it was their decision after all, but you wouldn't do it.
Nick and you continued talking for a while, the chilly Chicago air helping your heartbeat to calm down a bit. It was easy to talk to him and laughter filled the street, after he told you a joke. That was the first thing Connor heard after getting out of his car. Your laughter. Your beautiful laughter. It was something that he loved most about you. The sweet sound he tries everyday to get out of you. Everytime he hears you laugh, his heart explodes.
He wanted to be the one who made you laugh right now.
As he turned the corner, he stopped in his tracks as he saw you leaning on the wall with a stranger. It seemed like you were enjoying his company and Connor didn't like that one bit. If looks could kill, the guy you were talking to, would be dead right now.
With angry steps, Connor walked towards you and as he was only about two steps away from you, he called out your name.
"Y/n" He said and you would always recognize this voice no matter what.
You turned around with a surprised look and your eyes met his.
"Yeah?" You asked, unsure of why he had disrupted your conversation with the stranger. "Can I have a word with you? Please?"
Sure it was a little awkward but Connor wouldn't let you slide through his fingers again, so he took the chance.
You looked at Nick and back at Connor before nodding slowly, unsure of where this was heading.
"I'll wait by the car, okay?" Nick asked you, oblivious to the fact that your interest wasn't really on him anymore.
"Yeah, sure" You quietly said and waited until he was gone, as you turned to look back at Connor.
"What is it?" You asked, slightly annoyed as you remembered why you wanted to go home with Nick in the first place.
The two of you stared into each other's eyes for a while before Connor suddenly took a step forward. He took a hold of your chin and turned your face to look at him more. Then he leaned forward and collected your lips with his in a passionate kiss. Fireworks and butterflies erupted in your stomach as you welcomed the feelings of the kiss.
After kiss after kiss, you found yourself sitting next to Connor in his car on the way to your apartment. You couldn't keep still and started fiddling with your shirt. Connor noticed and took your hand in his, as he had his other hand on the steering wheel.
A few minutes later, the two of you finally reached the apartment. You couldn't keep your hands off of each other on the way up. Connor took a hold of your ass, as he picked you up and pushed you against the elevator wall and started kissing down your neck towards your cleavage, as suddenly the ring through the elevator echoed and the door opened. But unknown to Connor or you, the two of you weren't on your floor yet. Connor slowly dropped you down and as the two of you turned towards the door, you were met with your neighbor's face.
The moment was embarrassing for all of you, as your neighbor stepped into the elevator and stood next to you.
"Good evening y/n."
You cleared your throat before also wishing him a nice evening, trying to ignore the weird atmosphere.
As the elevator finally took a stop on your floor, you quickly took a hold of Connor's hand and pulled him towards your door.
A moment after the two of you stepped into the apartment, you were met, once again, with Connor's lips on your skin. He took a hold of your west as you pulled him closer. One thing led to another and soon you found yourself skin to skin with Connor inside your bed.
------
You woke, through to the sun shining into your face and lighting up the whole room. You tried to turn around but due to a strong figure spooning you from behind, you were stuck in your current position, so you slowly turned your head to try to take a look at the man sleeping behind you. But soon you noticed that he wasn't really sleeping anymore.
"Staring is rude, you know?" You soffty asked, your voice still raw from just waking up.
"I know but I think we can make an exception now, can't we?"
"Yeah, I guess you're right." You smiled at him.
"Y/n?"
"Yeah?"
You tried to turn around again and this time Connor let you.
"Please tell me this wasn't just a one time thing." He looked at you with such a hopeful look and it broke your heart, that he even would think that in the first place.
"Of course not Connor, of course not. I really enjoyed last night and I would like to spend more time with you."
"Outside of work, of course." You quickly added.
"Good we do have the same mindset. Y/n do you think, I mean, would you like to be my girlfriend?"
"Doctor Rhodes are you asking me to be your girlfriend, before even taking me out on a date?" You asked in a teasing tone.
"To be completely honest, I personally am of the opinion that dating is completely overrated. Especially in this case."
"Okay then, all I can do is to say yes, isn't it."
"Yeah I think it is."
"It be like that sometimes" You muttered before locking your lips with his, as an alternative to the word 'yes' .
I know this isn't perfect but I would still like to hear your feedback:)

Home To You | Part 1
Fandom: Chicago PD
Characters: Jay Halstead x Reader
Genre: Angst, hurt/comfort, fluff, romance

Word Count: 2489
Requested by jxbeizhe: The reader comes back from service with the army, she stayed longer than Greg and Jay, now deciding it was her time to come home. Since they saw each other last, Greg is now working in Intelligence with Jay, and Jay has been dating Erin. Jay doesn’t find out that the reader is back until he bumps into her leaving Greg’s office on the ground floor of the precinct. She had been smiling as she was leaving Greg’s company, not an unusual sight considering they were friends, but Jay still can’t help the pang of jealousy all within the 5 minutes of seeing the reader for the first time in years. To Jay’s surprise as well the reader has returned from service with a limp and a cane. What happened to the reader out there? And what will happen to her and Jay now that they are reunited once more?

Part 1
The L-train follows the curves of the track above the city’s bustle, the screech-rattle of the cars on the rails somehow brings you a comfort you never imagined it would. You look out over the sprawling streets to see everyone’s days in motion. The ordinary sights of people sharing conversation outside coffee shops, construction workers hollering as they work in symphony, and a CFD fire truck passing down below - it all makes you smile. You would have to stop by Firehouse 51 at some point, or better yet drop into Molly’s and see everyone there. You had finally made the decision to switch blistering heat, roaring rocket fire and a Ranger’s uniform for the city you had grown up in. Now it would be civilian clothing, Chicago’s varied and broad soundscape and the excitement for a new chapter of your life.
There was, however, a small caveat to your ‘decision’ to come home. You had decided that the tour you had just finished was going to be your last, yet it was still cut short by the fateful hand of an IED. The explosive device had surprised your small team of Rangers whilst out on a detail, you had all suffered various injuries. For you, it was the shrapnel to your right leg. The damage had required extensive surgeries to repair the bone and muscle just above your knee, going into your thigh. With the best work of surgeons, you had still come away needing regular physiotherapy, carefully managed pain medication and a cane to help you walk.
Yet, all things considered, you could cope with that; you were one of the fortunate to still have a life to live. After months of counselling concerning your time in Afghanistan, as well as occupational therapy about what would come next, you had got yourself to a place where you could make each day work. It had been as difficult as it had been described to you, adjusting to ‘civilian’ life again, and learning to rely on military support groups made you feel uncomfortable, a stark reminder of all that you had done. But it was an unfortunate necessity to be around people who had been in the same situation, something you could only reconcile and grow from going forward. If you couldn’t, then you’d take the breather and restart the next day.
Now that you were indeed a good few months into being back in Chicago, you had decided it was time to see familiar faces. Friends who hadn’t yet been witness to your return. You wondered if they would be upset that you didn’t make your existence known sooner, but on reflection, you don’t think you’d have been good to anybody before now.
You had let Hank Voight know you were back in town, and rather controversially Greg Gerwitz.
The controversy wasn’t because it was Mouse, the controversy was because of who it wasn’t. You had been avoiding Jay Halstead with all the best will in the world, deciding that you didn’t need to cause waves in his life after so many years of him being home and making a new life for himself. Last you heard he had a girlfriend, some detective in the same unit as him, it was better that you just let him be. Right?
So here you were, having got off the L, walking up to the steps of the 21st District with a nervous thrumming in your body. You hadn’t been here in 5 years, Hank had tried to get you to consider the Intelligence unit, but you had decided against it. Choosing to redeploy was right for you at the time, but you couldn’t help but think how different your life could have been. Now, you weren’t sure how someone like you could fit in with that type of work, especially with a physical impairment, not that you didn’t know desk work was a thing. Still, there was a lot left to consider.
Taking a deep breath you come to the top step, and a patrolman holds the door open for you, you thank her as you slip inside, eyeing Trudy Platt filling out a form at her desk, it makes you smile. Trudy had been one that you wanted to surprise, choosing to be entertained by her unfiltered reaction at your return. You take careful steps towards the desk, and come to a standstill in front of the sergeant, leaning slightly against your cane. You clear your throat loudly.
You immediately want to start laughing as Trudy lifts her head with a scowl, ready to chew out whoever was getting her attention in an obnoxious way. But her face immediately softens when she sees who it is,
“Oh my god, you’re alive.” She breathes, coming round the desk to give you a hug with haste.
Laughter escapes you now, chest filling with warmth as Trudy wraps her arms around you, it felt motherly, it felt like home.
“Yep, Sarge. I lived, sorry to tell ya I’m back to being a pain in the ass.”
She makes an indistinct noise of excitement and affection, squeezing you a little tighter.
“It’s good to see you back, kiddo.” She leans back to get a good look at you, still smiling that rarely seen smile around the District.
“It’s good to be back, Trudy. I was thinking we could catch up at Molly’s soon, or uh, I’ve got an apartment, you and Mouch could come over for dinner?”
You almost wanted to cry at Trudy’s clear happiness at seeing you, you clocked a few patrolmen out the corner of your eye gawking at their Sergeant’s uncharacteristic glee.
“You’re not gonna cook for us, we’re gonna cook for you. How about this Sunday? Mouch is off shift, and I’m free.”
You nod enthusiastically, touching her elbow in thanks, “I’d love that, Trudy. Thank you.” She nods approvingly, patting your shoulder before letting you readjust your position. Taking in your cane and knee brace, she finally asks.
“So, out with it, what happened?” The sergeant crossed her arms, disapproving that you got hurt where she couldn’t come and visit you or help you.
“IED.” You shrug, sighing. “Shrapnel messed up the bone and muscle, I can walk, maybe jog a little, but the movement is restricted. I’m doing alright all things considered. I’ve started looking for work, not quite sure what yet. Something First Responder related though.”
She listens intently, mulling over your words. “Well, you know I’ll help you with anything, alright? If you need me to put in a good word or want some contacts, I’m your gal.”
“You are absolutely my gal, Sarge.” You wink, so happy to be back with the people you knew loved and cared for you most.
“I was gonna say hi upstairs if that’s alright, but uh is Mouse around? I heard he has his own little office down here.”
Trudy nods in the direction of a doorway leading down some steps,
“I’ll show you.” She starts walking, and motions to another officer to take over the desk for a minute.
“Great, thanks.” You start moving, taking a glance at the gated stairs that lead to Intelligence’s bullpen, stomach clenching nervously at who would be up there.
You can’t hide forever, dumbass. An internal voice supplies, knowing eventually you’d have to look Jay in the eyes.
A few steps and a corridor later you come to a door that leads into a room, Trudy pushes the door open to reveal a space full of shelves of files and a small wall of monitors with various data, footage and images on it. At the desk facing said electronic wall is the recognisable mop of hair on Mouse’s head. “Why does nobody ever knock-” He grumbles, turning to complain at whoever had just intruded his space, but stops short when a) He sees Trudy’s scowling face and b) Your amused one
“Holy shit, she’s here.” He grins, standing to bring you in for a tight hug.
“I’m here.” You mumble between soft chuckles into his shoulder.
Trudy’s lips upturn ever so slightly, still irritated by Mouse’s tone,
“I’ll be at the desk if you need anything, Y/N.”
“Of course, Sarge, thanks.” You hold up a thumb of approval, keeping your laughter to a minimum until the door closes behind her.
“It’s so good to see you, man.” You grin, ruffling his hair, “You doing okay?” You query, knowing Mouse always found it harder than you or Jay to adjust to being away from military duty.
“Yeah, I’m alright… it has its days, but I like working here for the moment.” You nod, listening to his words, taking in his own space.
“This is a nice little spot, huh?” You remark, flicking one of the Star Trek bobbleheads on his desk.
“It is when nobody is busting into here without knocking.” He muses, you roll your eyes, prodding him in the shoulder.
“Hey, I have a license to intrude, I haven’t seen you in freakin’ years, dude.”
“You are the only one with a license, not even Jay is allowed to just intrude.”
You swallow at the mention of Jay’s name, it doesn’t escape Greg’s attention.
“You spoken to him at all?” He raises an eyebrow, arms folded as he leans against his desk, pulling the chair out for you to sit and rest your leg.
“Thanks.” You say softly, sighing as you continue to answer the question. “I haven’t, he doesn’t know I’m here. Unless you…?”
He holds his hands up immediately, “Hey, I kept you a secret as you requested.”
You smile sheepishly in thanks, it now hits you that you would more than likely see Jay Halstead, for the first time in years, today. You’re rubbing absentmindedly at your aching leg, trying to quieten the nervous adrenaline that thrums through you. Serving together had been simultaneously the best and most challenging experience of your adult life, both of you could never seem to get the timing right and though it wasn’t an entirely negative parting of ways, it still felt that it was something lost.
You and Mouse chat for a while, catching up on things as you glance at the clock on the wall. You hum, preparing to get yourself up,
“I guess I should go up there, huh? If nothing else Hank will want to see me.” You lift yourself out of the chair, finding a good grip on your cane you start to move towards the door. Mouse opens it for you,
“You want me to come up too?” He queries.
You shake your head, “Nah, it’s okay. The others will be up there, I told Adam last time I’d bring him something back from my final tour.”
“Oh yeah, what did you get?”
You pat your jacket pocket, pulling out something small. Mouse snorts,
“A rock?”
“Yep, a very nice sandy rock.”
“He should be honoured.”
“Damn straight.”
“So, going solo?”
“Yeah, yeah, I don’t want to get you in trouble for being in on the secret.”
“You absolutely sure? I can take him, he’s older and slower now.”
The joke has you chuckling loudly, giving Greg a one-armed hug as you shuffle out into the hallway.
“Oh, I will use that line as an ice breaker.”
“Gee, thanks, what happened to not getting me in trouble?”
“Needs must, and that one was too good to not share.”
Greg shakes his head in fake offence, “You are still trouble, Y/N.”
“Oh don’t I know it, bud, don’t I know it… Listen, if I don’t say goodbye or whatever, you wanna meet for drinks or something soon?”
“100%, I’ll text you.”
“Sweet, alright, well wish me luck.”
“Good luck, remember when in doubt, whack him with the cane.”
“I will absolutely do that.” You give Greg one last wave and turn to make your way back up the corridor Trudy had led you down, Mouse shutting the door as you go.
You’re still giggling to yourself as you walk, not noticing the man approaching who had heard you leaving Mouse’s office with laughter. Taking a quick glance at your phone you end up walking into the warm, rigid, frame of the approaching man, the corridor was not exactly roomy enough to simply pass one another. You stumble back, trying to right yourself, but firm and gentle hands grip your arms, one hand moves to your back to stop your descent and the clatter of your cane.
You feel a little embarrassed for not looking where you were going, ready to apologise to whoever had caught you traipsing in the hall,
“Y/N?” His voice is deeper now, but there’s still that curious youth, he had really filled out since you’d seen him last, strong muscular arms, a jawline and stubble that matured his baby face. Despite the change in depth, Jay’s voice was as comforting as ever, and your skin fizzled with goosebumps. His detective badge hung around his neck, green eyes intense and a storm of emotion.
You realise you’ve not said a word yet, simply staring at him dumbfounded when his small snort of laughter brings you back. You laugh awkwardly.
“Jay… hey.”
“Hey… wow, I - when did you get back? I thought the tour wasn’t supposed to be over for months yet?”
“Ah, well, an IED made that decision to retire me early.” You jiggled your cane in your hand, fully aware that Jay was still holding on to you. You clear your throat, and he finally releases you. It would be so easy to immediately pry about your injury, but he knew that wasn’t always the best course of action. He decides you’d share with him if and when you were ready.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N, that’s rough…I, god, sorry there’s so many questions. What are you doing here?” You’re inclined to believe that Jay meant at the District, but you know his expressions well and you see jealousy flicker to the forefront. You were pretty sure he meant “Why are you seeing Mouse before me?”
“Well, I’ve been back a while, and I decided it was time to see old friends.” You smile tightly, a sadness creeping in that you really were hoping would stay at bay. “I was just about to head up and see you guys.”
He nods, keeping his comments to himself for now, “Well, I can come with, I can bother Mouse later.” You were pretty sure that now meant, “I can interrogate Mouse later on about why you didn’t want to see me.”
“Sure, that would be good. I’ve missed everyone.” You smile a little more sincerely now, bracing yourself for everyone’s curiosities and seeing Jay’s partner, now girlfriend.
As you watch Jay head up the corridor with you closely behind, you can’t help but hear the words you wished you’d said a moment ago ringing in your head.
“I missed you, Jay.”

Love You | Chapter Seven
Tumblr media
Summary: A chance encounter has all the makings of a lifetime love.
Series Masterlist
WC: ~1k
Warning(s): mention of blood, mild language
It only took a day before Kelly could no longer hold off on calling Odette. He ran out of excuses as to why he shouldn’t in the first place. In the end, he decided that none of the reasons mattered because he enjoyed the time he spent with her and there was absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to continue starting something with her. It wasn’t too late into the night where he thought she’d be sleeping but late enough that he winced when he glanced at the time.
Still, she answered, albeit with a breathier voice than he was used to.
“Hey babe, you okay?” He asked, his mind already on high alert. He foresaw that even if he wasn’t sitting in his CFD office quarters right now, the first responder instinct would never leave him.
There was a pause before she spoke and he sat up straighter the moment he caught it.
“Y-yeah, I’m okay,” she coughed and elicited a stronger voice within herself as she continued, “How’s your shift going so far?”
Kelly frowned, but decided in the moment, to answer her question instead of pushing her, “Uh, it’s fine. We don’t use the Q word around here, so I’ll settle for calling it ‘calm.’”
Odette chuckled, “Well, when you’re done with your calm shift, how do you feel about breakfast tomorrow? Almond croissants and hot chocolate are calling my name.”
“That can be arranged,” Kelly smirked into the phone. He himself had called to ask her out on a breakfast date tomorrow morning. “You really know how to beat a guy to the punch.”
“It’s a talent,” It’s almost like he could hear her smile through the phone as she joked with him.
“How was your day?” He inquired. Sounding farther away from the phone, he heard her intake of breath and the doubt that was slowly dripping out of his body had rushed back in. “‘Dette, is there something wrong?”
“No,” she immediately answered, “No, not really. I mean, it kind of is. But also kind of not. And it’s under control so nothing to worry about.” She rambled hurriedly and almost incoherently, which only further worried him despite her assuaging words.
“Hey,” he interrupted her, “Talk to me.”
“Well-” she started. Whatever words she was about to say got drowned out by the blaring alarms calling for Squad 3 and the other fire companies of House 51. Kelly’s groan was almost something of a growl.
“It’s okay,” she soothed, “We’ll talk later. And you’ll see for yourself tomorrow that I’m really okay.”
Kelly was already up and out of his quarters as they bid their goodbyes.
**************
Odette sighed a mix of relief and discomfort as she hung up the phone from Kelly. The scalp wound on her head was still dripping with blood even with all the multiple times she had softly dabbed it. The bleeding not stopping after thirty seconds was enough to cause alarm, but her call with Kelly had been a distracted detour from getting her things together to head into the ED.
She was woozy now and knew it’d be irresponsible to drive herself. With the meddling yet well-meaning neighbors she had, she didn’t even need to ask for the older couple to take her to the ED as the wife had all but forced her into her car while the husband stayed back at her house to survey and attempt to fix some of the damage from her now broken window.
Odette wasn’t entirely sure how a tennis ball had landed itself through her living room window, but she was more focused on the bad luck she had to have been standing right near her bookshelf when it burst through the glass. One of the shards had slashed right where her hairline met her forehead on the side of her face along with several other smaller, more superficial cuts on her arms from when she had blocked her face from the damage.
She sat back in the passenger seat of her neighbor’s car and decided to silently let her neighbor fuss over her instead of insisting she was okay. Doing anything more took too much energy from her and she was already fading fast the longer she reclined against the seat. Her neighbor’s voice became a muffled noise and she could just barely suss out the sounds of nearby ambulance sirens and lights emanating from the hospital’s ED bay.
***********
When Kelly finally got settled back into his officer quarters, it was after midnight. Odette would more than likely have been asleep by now, but he was still tempted to call her back and pry an explanation out of her. Something felt wrong from their last interaction and he couldn’t shake the feeling.
There was a knock on his office door and Dawson poked her head in precariously.
“What’s up?” he asked. The hesitance on her face gave him pause.
“Brett and I just got back from taking the last of the fire victims to Med. Some woman had brought in Odette, that girl you’ve been seeing, with a major head lac.”
Kelly was back out of his chair instantly, “What?!” Almost asleep voices from outside in the bunkroom murmured irritatedly at him. “I just got off the phone with her. What the hell happened?”
“I don’t know,” Gabby shrugged, “She was literally brought in just as we were leaving. I told Will that we knew her and asked if he could give us an update when he could… It was a lot going on. She looked barely conscious.”
Kelly shook his head, not content with waiting to hear what happened. Instinctually, Gabby backed up as he exited his quarters. Unaware and uncaring of what attention he was drawing to himself, he stalked straight to Boden’s office, who was getting ready to take a nap on his sofa.
“Chief, I’ve got an emergency. I need to step out. Can you have Cruz cover for me?”
If there was anything following the confused and alarmed nod of his battalion chief’s, he hadn’t taken stock.
