Every day that Jessica woke up and got ready for work felt like she was making herself look presentable for her own execution. She hadn't slept well after Tuesday evening when she went home and cried after Jake punched Brian in the face. He offered to stay with her, but she told him she needed some time to herself. And now she was in a cycle of dreading every minute of work, just like before.
She'd had these soft glimmers of hope over the last few months. She had made a new friend, she had a boyfriend who she was falling in love with, and she absolutely nailed the fraternity fundraiser. Everything was looking so hopeful, but she should have known there was no way she could have it all if Brian was involved. Especially since it looked like he had a broken nose on Thursday morning.
She thought she was going to throw up when he looked at her. Any minute, Dean Walters or someone from his office would be knocking on her door, asking what exactly had possessed her boyfriend to punch the head of the science department.
But it never came. And the anticipation was just making it worse. When she heard someone tapping on her door, her stomach lurched as she sank a little lower in her seat. "Come in," she called out, her voice wavering. When the door eased open, she was surprised to see her friend standing there. "Advanced Calculus," she muttered, leaning back in her seat and taking a deep breath.
"I brought you some coffee," the other woman said as she closed the door behind her. "And I also came to ask you why the hell you didn't tell me that Jake punched Conley in the damn face!"
When Jessica looked at her again, she just shook her head. "I don't want to talk about it."
She set down the coffee cup and said, "You don't have to talk about it, because I already know all about it, because Jake won't shut up about it to Bradley. He thinks he fucked everything up with you. He thinks you're mad at him."
Jessica let her forehead rest on her desk. If she tried to say she wasn't avoiding Jake, she would be lying. "I think I just need to deal with the repercussions on my own. But I'll text him back." She reached for her phone and looked at the most recent message from him. Hey, Smart Girl. I'd love to bring dinner to your office hours, but only if you want me to.
"Wait. What repercussions?" the other woman asked as she took a seat with her own drink. "You don't think this will fall back on you? Do you?"
"How could it not? Have you seen Brian's face?"
She snorted. "I sure fucking did. I came up here more or less to congratulate you for making Jake fall in love with you so hard that he did that for you."
Jessica's heart pounded in response, and she knew her eyes were wide. Jake hadn't said that to her yet, and she hadn't either, but she felt like it was right there. "He just punched him all of a sudden. I didn't ask him to or anything."
"I know. That's the whole point. He couldn't let someone be shitty to you. I just knew Jake had it in him."
Jessica looked down at her phone again and decided to stop avoiding someone who made her so happy. I would love it if you brought me dinner.
His response came almost instantly, letting her know that he would be there. She felt a little better as she looked at her friend. "Thanks for the coffee." But she waved it off and shrugged. "I also wanted to stop by and tell you that everyone is still talking about your fratraiser. They all loved it."
Jessica wanted to love it, too. It has been the perfect night until Brian showed up. "Thanks. I still want to stop in and talk to Dean Walters about it, but I was trying to wait until things with Brian blew over."
"You should definitely talk to Walters," she replied as she stood to leave.
Jessica was tired of hesitating all the time, so she asked, "Do you want to have lunch together today?"
"Can't," she replied with a grimace. "I promised Dr. Rosenthal that I'd look at curriculum with him again."
"Tenure must be so nice," Jessica replied wistfully. "Not that I'll ever know."
Before she slipped out the door, the other woman said, "I'm still holding out hope, and you should, too."
Hours later, Jessica was still considering those words when she took a little break before the start of her office hours. She had been hiding at her desk, looking for a birthday gift for Jake, when she started yawning. With her office hours spread out like a gauntlet in front of her, she decided to quickly grab another coffee from the lounge. She would need it to get through a tutoring session with Luca.
But as soon as she walked through the door, she was met with Brian, and he had his arm wrapped around the same teaching assistant she saw him with before. The one he was most definitely sleeping with. His face looked terrible as the bruising had spread out from his crooked nose, giving him two black eyes. Jessica was sure the glare he was sending her way must be painful for him at the moment, and she had to try her hardest not to laugh. Apparently he was in full scumbag mode now, because he didn't even bother to separate from the TA as Jessica waffled next to the door, undecided if she should stay and make some coffee or not.
"Did you need something, Dr. Reed?" he snapped, his voice extra nasally.
The mere sound of his tone was enough to make her regret coming down here. "No, actually. I'll just leave you to your...business." She turned and left them, hoping she still had a can of Coke in her mini fridge that would suffice. And that was when she almost ran directly into Sabrina Conley.
Jessica recognized her immediately, and she could tell Brian's wife remembered her as well. A chill rippled along her entire body as she felt the woman appraising her with a hateful scowl. "Are you the reason my husband's face is a mess?" she asked, venom lacing every word. Convinced this week couldn't get any worse, Jessica stood frozen, completely unsure what she should say. Was it her fault? Or was it Brian's? Or maybe it was Jake's fault? She just wanted to hide in her office again and cry.
Sabrina took a step closer, her voice somehow more scathing as she said, "Can you at least tell me where he is?"
Jessica nodded, a jerky motion, as she pointed behind her and said, "In the lounge." It was a few seconds before she fully realized what she had done, and by that point it was too late. Sabrina had already disappeared around the corner, and then Jessica heard an angry shriek.
--------------------------
It had been two solid days since Jake saw Jessica, and this was the proof he needed. Seeing her every day had become a necessity. It hurt that she'd distanced herself a little bit after the incident with Brian, even though he could understand that she probably just needed a little space and time. But the irrational side of his brain was running completely wild.
"I fucked up the best relationship I have ever had," he groaned in the locker room on base.
"No, you didn't," Bradley replied with an eye roll. "Or... maybe you did. Maybe Jessica is out on a date with Dev at this very moment."
Jake glared in response. "It's 5:30 on a Thursday. She just finished a lecture, and she's getting ready for her office hours. She's not anywhere with Dev."
Bradley smirked as he got dressed in one of his hideous shirts. "You have her entire schedule memorized. That's so cute."
"You have your wife's entire schedule memorized," Jake retorted.
"That's right. Dr. Tits is finishing up her linear algebra lecture right now which means I can pick her up on my way home. Unless we take a detour to the library," he muttered, and Jake decided to tune him out. He needed to stop home and grab the food he made yesterday in the hope that Jessica would want him to stop by tonight.
He would make this all up to her. If she was somehow in some shit at work because of him, he would have to try to fix it. So he picked up the little individual containers of chicken, mashed potatoes and vegetables along with some ice packs. But his condo was so quiet, he was anxious to leave again. He was hoping Jessica would want to spend the weekend here with him, cooking and reading some journals. Making love and watching a movie. Really anything she wanted to do.
He drove his new truck to campus and parked, knowing he was right in the middle of her office hours and not wanting to intrude if she was working with Luca or someone else. So he went slowly up the walkway past Chippy's and crossed the street to the science building. If he saw Brian, he would stay calm this time. He wouldn't fuck anything up worse for his girlfriend.
When he reached her office, the door was closed, and he heard a soft conversation inside, prompting him to wait his turn. He was hoping it was Luca. He already felt the rage building inside of him over the fact that it could be Brian again. But then the door opened, and a skateboard hit the floor in front of him, and Jake smiled.
As Luca skated away, Jessica launched herself at his chest, and Jake welcomed her, dropping his cooler bag on the floor. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly as she buried her face in his neck and held onto him. "I missed you."
"I don't know," she whispered. "I just know I missed you, too." She started backing up, pulling him into her office, and he reached to pick up the bag of food.
When she guided him to her desk chair, he was delighted that she pushed him down before sitting on his thigh. Jake's hands went to her waist, and she came to rest against his chest with a sigh. Maybe she wasn't so upset with him after all.
He kissed her forehead. "I'm sorry," he whispered again. He'd said it so many times. "I'm sorry I punched him."
"I know you are. It's okay, Jake. Part of me is absolutely delighted that you did that," she told him as she ran her fingers along his name tag. "Because he deserved it." She swallowed hard, and when she spoke again, he could barely hear her. "Brian's wife was here today, and she walked in on him alone with one of the department TAs in the lounge. I'm sure it was as obvious to her as it is to me that he's sleeping with her now."
"Shit," he grunted, stroking her jaw with his fingers before brushing them through her hair. "If he got caught again, then he deserved it."
She nodded. "I don't know why I feel guilty that I was the one who told her he was in the lounge."
Jake's fingers froze. "You feel guilty? Baby, the only one who should feel guilty about anything is Brian.""I know that," she whispered. "I do know that. But Sabrina has been through enough, and I've been feeling bad for her for the past year."
She needed a break, and Jake knew it. "That's understandable, but it's still not your fault. I think you should come spend the weekend at my place and let me take your mind off things."
Jessica tilted her face to look at him. "How are you going to do that?"
He kissed her forehead again as he said, "By cooking for you and kissing you and reading journals with you." Her soft moan had him pressing his luck. "We could pick out some journals right now, and I could have them ready for when you come over tomorrow after work. You worked really hard on your fundraiser, and you deserve a break this weekend."
"Jake," she groaned. "That sounds perfect." The fact that she was curling up on him and yawning now let him know she was exhausted. And if Brian's wife was on campus earlier today, then there was a good chance she was upset that her husband's face was all bruised. He needed to take Jessica's mind off of this shit.
"I'll go grocery shopping tonight, and then the whole weekend is whatever you want it to be, Jess."
--------------------------
On Friday morning, when she ran down the hallway and into her office, Jessica turned on her computer. While it started up, she grabbed a few more journals from her shelf to take to Jake's place. Her plan was to leave right from campus to spend the weekend with him, her overnight bag already in her trunk. When she logged in to check her university email, she had to read over the newest message three times to believe it.
Dr. Reed, I realize this is very short notice, so please allow me to apologize in advance. Dr. Conley is taking a short leave of absence, and in an effort to keep disruption to a minimum, there is an immediate need for professors who are willing to step in and teach some of his courses. Due to conflicting schedules, you are the only PhD in the science department who can advise his Senior Studies class on Wednesday afternoons. I know this will be an additional workload if you are willing to take it, so we can discuss compensation on Monday. However, if you are willing, please let me know today so I can finalize this schedule. It would be much appreciated. Sincerely, Dean Corbin Walters
"Oh shit," Jessica gasped. Brian was taking a leave of absence? And not only was the dean not upset with her, he was asking her to take one of Brian's classes? "Holy shit." She lunged for her keyboard and typed up a response so quickly, she had to read it three times to fix the spelling errors. Her heart was pounding, because she would have been willing to do this even without the extra compensation.
And now she sat back in her chair, wondering exactly what had happened with Brian's wife. The anticipation was going to eat her alive, but she had a quantum physics lecture to hold. First she added a note to her calendar to call Dean Walters' office and schedule a meeting for Monday.
By the time Jessica was leaving campus on Friday afternoon, she had a meeting scheduled with the dean. She also took the time to update and recalculate all of her grades, and Luca was finally passing. She rode down the elevator with a smile on her face, knowing Brian wasn't on campus, lurking around a corner, ready to give her a hard time. Instead she walked out to her car in her heels with her head held high.
Her stomach was growling, but she knew Jake would feed her all weekend. He would take care of everything. She wouldn't have to scrape together any sad meals or plan her lessons through next semester just for something to do. She was allowed to enjoy herself when she was with her boyfriend. She was allowed to let her feelings grow deeper.
Of course she wasn't disappointed when she knocked on the front door of his condo, and the door swung open to reveal him in an undershirt and gray sweatpants, the smell of something delicious wafting to meet her.
"Baby, you should call me from the parking lot next time," Jake drawled, reaching for her. "It's getting dark outside, and I don't want you walking around alone."
Jessica whimpered as he pulled her inside and locked the door. Of course she thought he was being a little dramatic, but she appreciated him nonetheless. "Okay, next time I'll call you." She barely got the last word out as his lips met hers. Her palm slid over the roughness of the stubble starting to grow in on his cheek before she pushed her fingers back through his hair.
"You're really not upset with me?" he asked softly, eyes closing to her touch.
"No," she promised. "I just needed some time to think about things, but I'm not upset with you."
It was all a seamless motion as Jake scooped her up by her thighs and backed up until he was sitting on his couch with her on his lap. "I missed you," he whispered, squeezing her legs and hips gently.
She laughed as he kissed her neck. "You saw me yesterday."
"It wasn't enough." His voice sounded a little rougher.
She tugged on his hair until his lips were hovering against hers. "It was less than a day ago."
His nose bumped hers as his hands tightened around her waist. "Well apparently I can't go that long, Jessica."
She could feel his cock hardening through his sweatpants, and the more she tugged on his hair, the raspier his voice seemed to get. His green eyes were so pretty and eager, and she wanted him right now. Her skirt was already bunched up on her thighs, so she took his hands in hers and used them to push the fabric the rest of the way up to her waist.
A little smirk formed his lips as she said, "I can't go another minute."
Jake grunted and shook his head before his eyes trailed down to where she knew her rose colored thong was on display for him, and he swiped one long index finger up along her clit. "Jake!" she gasped, grinding down on his cock. He did it again, and she rolled her hips again. "Oh my god."
With one hand, Jake hooked her underwear to the side, and the cool air met her wet core. With his other hand, he tugged himself free of his sweats and his underwear, his thick cock standing at attention for her. She didn't hesitate as she sank down around him, making him groan loudly. One slow roll of her hips, and she was groaning too. Just when she was getting a good rhythm going, her lips met his neck, and his phone alarm started blaring in his pocket.
"Shit," he grunted, stilling her movements with one hand on her butt as he mashed his fingers against his phone screen. "I'm making you a chicken pot pie, and I don't want it to burn." He stood with Jessica fully seated on his cock, and she grabbed at his hair and his neck as she wrapped her legs around his waist, losing one high heel as he walked.
"Fuck! Jake!" she nearly screamed, clenching around him with each step he took.
"Hang on, Baby," he whispered, setting her on the island before turning away from her to reach for his pot holders. She was whimpering for more as soon as he was gone, but she was treated to the sight of him removing the pie from the oven before tossing the pot holders on the floor and rushing back to her, his wet cock bobbing along. "I got you."
He was back where she wanted him with one sharp thrust, and the look of concentration on his face as he worked her up made her smile. "You liked it when I was walking, didn't you?"
All she had to say was, "Yes," and he had her up off the island again. She lost her second shoe as he grinned and walked around the island, rubbing the spot deep inside of her that made her ache with need. "Yes." She was a mess, clinging to him and making ridiculous sounds while he walked her back through the kitchen. And then she was clenching around his cock, with her lips to his ear, but when she saw the dinner he made for her, she came. She whined his name, one long, loud syllable.
Next thing she knew, he had her back pressed up against the refrigerator, magnets clattering to the floor as he got some leverage and thrust into her with all his weight. "Jessica," he growled, nudging her glasses with his nose and squeezing her butt. Then he filled her up with his cum, his cheeks flushed and his eyes half lidded.
Jake kissed along her lips as he murmured, "Let me feed you dinner, Smart Girl. And then we can do anything you want as long as you don't leave my side." --------------------------
Could things be looking up? I mean, Jake can't really be blamed, right? And it looks like scumbag Brian is found out once again. Thanks to @mak-32 and @beyondthesefourwalls

Batfam x GN!Bat!Reader.
Tumblr media
Summary: Bruce had another kid in Arkham asylum that nobody knows about.
Warnings: Murder, Arkham asylum, Reader can see the dead, Bruce being a bad father, hallucinations, delusions
Yes, I know that a psychiatric visit wouldn't go like this, I also know that hallucinations don't normally work like this, but it's a fictional world with a bat inspired vigilante, use your imagination.
Part one
~☆~
"Bruce, what the fuck!" Tim had yelled as he ran into the Manor.
Dick had abandoned the thought of taking Damian and going to get both Tim and Jason. Even if they showed up at the asylum with proof that they were your adoptive siblings and half sibling, they would still have a slim chance of getting to meet you.
"Calm down, Matster Timothy.." Alfred had tried his best to make the tension die down. He himself only knew of you from the brief explanation Bruce gave him five years ago.
"Calm down?!"
"Listen, I mean I could go in there with my badge and get to at least meet them." Dick proposed, searching his brain for a way to meet you.
"Yeah, we all could with our reputations." Jason made himself known by talking about their vigilante personas. He was weirdly calm throughout this entire thing. "Why have you never mentioned them?" Oh, now they could see it. He was acting... he's seething.
"I-" Bruce thought of something to say. "When they were fourteen, their mother was murdered. I was asked to survey the scene, and they had told me about how they weren't even there-"
"Where is this going, father?" Damian interrupted.
"And then we looked inside one of M/N's journals. Y/N has a history of delusions that they fully believe."
"So you shut them out because of that?" Tim asked, genuinely trying to grasp ahold of what was going on.
"I know that they wouldn't want me in their life, M/N didn't, so why would Y/N?" Bruce sighed.
Jason opened his mouth to speak but was beat by Dick speaking first. "We're going up there. We are going to meet them!"
×
"So you're Y/N's family." Dr. Conley spoke. "Bruce Wayne... I would not have called that."
"Can we see Y/N or not?" Damian asked, boredom evident on his face.
Dr. Conley took in a breath before setting a file on the table in front of herself. "Y/N is plagued by hallucinatory delusions. They believe that they can see the dead."
"Can they? I mean, we have aliens roaming around." It was Dicks turn to speak.
"No, they can't. They claim that two of the "people" they see are named Alice and Mathew, old residents of the asylum." Dr. Conley sighed. "We've never had any residents named Alice and Mathew Hallows."
"Are those her friends?" Tim asked.
"Yes."
×
"Y/N, you have some visitors." Dr. Conley told you, a small smile tugging at her dark skin.
You got up from where you sat, silently gesturing both Alice and Mathew to follow you. Dr. Conley guided you out of the main building and into a sanctuary that you had never been in.
"I'm still in isolation." You told her, afraid that you would get in trouble for being out of your room.
"We've made an exception." She smiled again, now opening up a door for you. As you walked in, you immediately noticed the one face you hoped you'd never see. Bruce Wayne.
And his little ducklings all sitting with him.
Dr. Conley pulled out a chair for you to sit in, but you never noticed that. All you could focus on was Bruce avoiding eye contact.
"Y/N." She snapped you out of your daze, finally letting you sit down. All seven of you sat awkwardly, not muttering a single thing. The boys just gave you small smiles.
Just as Dick was about to say something you spoke.
"You think I killed her, don't you?"
The room remained silent, offering Bruce's avoidance on a silver plater. "I would never, I loved her."
"You don't know what it was like out there, I was hungry, and so was she...I was getting us food-" You cut yourself off as you began shouting. "and when I came back, she was....dead."
Tears had started to unwillingly fall from your eyes, something that Bruce noticed as he finally looked up at you. "And I'm not crazy." You whispered.
You noticed the weary looks that everyone around the room shared. "What?" You asked.
When none of them answered you turned to look at Dr. Conley, taking notice of her frown.
"Y/N.." She whispered, "There are no records of an Alice and Mathew Hallows."
"What?" You laughed.
"We've looked at computer documents and paper documents... they just aren't real."
You looked at everybody in the room, hoping to find a smile on one of their faces, signifying that this was all a joke.
You whipped your body around to face Alice and Mathew. The young man, whom you've grown to know very well, only looked at you with a sorry look, and Alice stared at Dr. Conley with wide eyes.
This couldn't be real. She was lying.
You quickly turned to look at Dr. Conley, before going back to look at Alice and Mathew. This time, Mathew was nowhere to be seen, seemingly having turned to air.
"Y/N, no, she's lying, I'm real!" Alice yelled, grabbing at her face to convince herself.
"I know, I know!" You tried to make her feel better, but the hysteria under your skin started to break free.
"No, I'm real!" She was crying now. "I'm real!"
You turned to look at everyone in the room, about to ask them for help, only to stop yourself when you noticed their wide eyes. You heard Alice's cries die down but never turned to face her again. You were sitting there just staring at the people around the room.
When you came back to your senses you tried to mutter out, "We need to he-" you paused, "-lp her?"
Alice was gone.
~☆~
Tumblr media
I know that people wanted a "holy shit you can see the dead" reaction, but I strive to suprise.
Also, I think I'm going to post a follow-up of this fic, just to see how Y/N's dealing with it and how their relationship with the batbros turns out.
I have another two part Asylum!bat!Reader in the works if you're interested.

What happened to the janitor that Leo Frank accused? Does he have any descendants? Sorry I said it before, but as a black person. The story of Leo Frank seem like something straight out of the Twilight Zone
Both the night watchman and janitor were ruled to be innocent St the time, and Leo Frank was the only one charged and sentenced, after which he was broken out of jail, allegedly by the KKK, and was then lynched.
Jim Conley was later maligned by the ADL, and still is to this day, as the true killer of Mary Phagan, Newt Lee was forgotten by the ADL and didn't fall victim to their 100 year smear campaign.
The only strange thing is how anyone would believe the ADL when they were founded to defend Leo Frank, and how the KKK would pass up the chance to lynch a black man in 1913 Georgia.

Common Dreams
April 16, 2024
"The institutions of world finance have lost their muscle," wrote more than 100 activists, celebrities, and political leaders. "You can be the leaders who bring them into the 21st century."
Quoting the economist John Maynard Keynes at the time of the founding of the modern global finance system in 1944, more than 100 signatories on Tuesday called on the world's largest economies to allow the world "to taste hope again" by pouring resources into solving the global debt and climate crises.
Keynes remarked after the historic Bretton Woods meeting in New Hampshire that the summit offered new hope to everyone from "our businessmen and our manufacturers and our unemployed" as world leaders established the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
But with the world now "rocked by conflict, food insecurity, biodiversity loss, and spiraling inflation," said the signers of an open letter organized by communications and campaign group Project Everyone, the global community needs "another Bretton Woods moment"—one that would correct the "imperfect" system hammered out 80 years ago and live up to the ideals that were centered at the original meeting, including "prosperity as a means of peace" and wealth as a means of serving "the common good."
Tumblr media
The letter states that global inequality is "compounded by the devastation wrought by climate change," which is disproportionately likely to impact the Global South even as developing countries contribute a mere fraction of the planet-heating emissions of wealthy nations.
The signatories—including International Rescue Committee CEO David Miliband, philanthropist Abigail Disney, and singer and activist Annie Lennox—called on G20 countries to take steps including tripling their investment in the World Bank and IMF, canceling developing countries' debt to the institutions, and reforming tax codes to ensure big polluters and the wealthiest people contribute to efforts to mitigate inequality.
"This is your chance," reads the letter, which was released as world leaders met in Washington, D.C. for the World Bank and IMF's Spring Meetings. "The institutions of world finance have lost their muscle. You can be the leaders who bring them into the 21st century. You can unlock the colossal public and private investment potential of renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate adaptation."
Under the status quo, the signatories noted, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are "way off track," with $3 trillion still needed achieve the objective of a "greener, fairer, better world by 2030," as agreed to by 193 U.N. member states.
Project Everyone and its supporters reiterated a demand made by Oxfam International Monday to cancel debts owed by countries in the Global South that are facing rising inequality, as their debt obligations to the IMF and the World Bank have left them unable to invest in education, climate adaptation, housing, and other public services.
"Removing burdensome debt allows countries to invest in their people and their future: in resilience, education, health, and nutrition," wrote the signatories. "This drives growth and creates string partners to trade with... Each of us stands to gain from stability, lower food and energy costs, and nature protection."
The wealthiest countries in the world, said Project Everyone, must look to the leaders who met at Bretton Woods and "fulfill their promise: to transform these instruments for peace and prosperity and truly set them to work in our common interest."

This is a recommendation not exactly related to conversion therapy or LGBT issues at all but I would like to link the webcomic Elan School by Joe Nobody. I was struck by how similar Love in Action and Elan functioned, from the idea of false image/guilt and erasing identity, to purposefully obfuscating language to make communication between kids and their parents difficult, the constant surveillance, and even the inspiration from addiction groups. Conversion therapy is just one religious branch of a wider troubled teen industry, and I think that's important to consider, that teens and children are vulnerable enough groups already on top of the homophobia and transphobia LGBT teens face. I would add that Elan School has the same triggers as Boy Erased with regards to suicide, self harm, child abuse but also drug use and violence and probably more.
Review
So I read this book because it's quickly become THE book on conversion therapy, at least on the non fiction side. The fiction side is probably locked down by The Miseducation of Cameron Post, and they've kind of become interlinked to me. Probably not helped by both of them having movie adaptions come out at relatively the same time, which is probably the reason why Boy Erased has become the go to book when it comes to these conversations.
And it makes sense why, this is a very accessible memoir. I think a lot of people tend to shy away from non fiction because they assume it won't be as compelling as fiction, and that's definitely not true here. It should be pretty apparent from his writing style that even Conley himself is more comfortable with fiction, and writes in a similar style with tons of descriptive details, metaphors, and the like you might not expect if you haven't read any narrative non fiction. Honestly, that's why I didn't like the writing, because I don't like narrative non fiction and I'm fine if it's a little drier and I'm not getting descriptions of every sensory detail the author can remember. I say that, but also I couldn't stop reading Boy Erased every time I opened it and eventually came to really appreciate the style. Please give it a chance whether or not it clicks with you immediately.
And I really would suggest you give this book a chance if you can handle how triggering it can be, especially if you're in my situation. Not to make this review about myself, but while Conley and I are both gay I'm from a blue state, my mom's always been accepting and even been to more pride parades than I have, and more importantly religion plays no part in my life. While I have sympathy for LGBT people, especially LGBT teens and transgender people in the south, it's also easy for me to dismiss a literal hell with literal demons and the fear of them, to roll my eyes when I see churches in my area advertise "everyone is welcome" with a little rainbow flag, to just exist without those fears and trauma and without the need for those reassurances, to be relieved when you find a church where you belong. Because it's just never been a huge part of my life. I think it was a good experience to read Boy Erased and put myself in the headspace that was decidedly the opposite, to experience as best I could that kind of pressure and its consequences. Where there really would be that struggle between faith and sexuality, to wrestle with how much an all loving god can possibly love when you're in a place that well, quite literally demonizes being gay. That would push you to go into conversion therapy, to stick with it despite the abuse and the shame until you reach the breaking point.

WOII
WOII was definitely a very interesting module, I never thought we would study something so different and mind-opening like this module! "Creativity — that sometimes-elusive spark, the motivation to think more deeply, the chance to innovate, re-think, and renew. " (Author) We studied art differently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of my favorite classes was week 4, where we talked about how to analyze designs. Since that class, I have looked at clothes, mugs, bags, accessories, literally everything, in a different way. Now I'm trying to understand what the artist wanted to project with their product, how they designed it, how the process of doing the product was, how long it took them to come up with the idea... and with that, we learned how to appreciate art, especially hand-made ones. WOII was a safe space where could explore more our creativity and abilities to expand our skills. It was also exciting to work in groups, where we could share our ideas and explore more possibilities. Coastal Carolina: 2023 Hawaii Bowl Champions
Tumblr media
Freshman quarterback Ethan Vasko threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night as Coastal Carolina beat San Jose State 24-14 to win the Hawaii Bowl in Honolulu.
Vasko completed 20 of 33 passes, wrapping up the win with 2:43 remaining when he found Sam Pinckney for an 8-yard scoring strike. The play capped an eight-catch, 123-yard performance for Pinckney in his last college game.
The Chanticleers (8-5) possessed the ball for more than 37 minutes, converting 8 of 15 third downs. They were outgained 374-336, but their defense came up with two key fumble recoveries to halt third-quarter drives.
Spartans quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, who was born in Honolulu and playing the final game of his college career, hit 16 of 30 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown. He led two fourth-quarter scoring drives that got San Jose State (7-6) within three points, first finding Sam Olson on a 35-yard strike at the 12:27 mark.
Quali Conley added a 12-yard touchdown run with 8:30 remaining, but the Spartans couldn't get the stop they needed. They had a chance to get within seven points with 1:09 left but kicker Kyler Halvorsen missed a 32-yard field-goal attempt, ending their hopes of a dramatic comeback.
San Jose State entered the game as a clear favorite. The Spartans came in with a six-game winning streak, and Coastal Carolina's star player, quarterback Grayson McCall, departed for NC State via the transfer portal.
But Vasko orchestrated a patient attack that hogged the ball for nearly 18 1/2 minutes in the first half. It was Vasko who broke the scoring seal with 3:16 left in the first quarter, flipping a 2-yard touchdown pass to Matt Alaimo to cap an 80-yard drive that lasted nearly 5 1/2 minutes.
Meanwhile, San Jose State couldn't get going against a Chanticleers defense that was lit up frequently down the stretch. They limited the Spartans to 24 plays, 127 yards and six first downs in the half.

Too Hot to Work? America's Next Big Labor Battle
— By Giulia Carbonaro | August 14, 2023
Tumblr media

American workers are dying, local businesses are reporting a drop in productivity, and the country's economy is losing billions all because of one problem: the heat.
July was the hottest month on record on our planet, according to scientists. This entire summer, so far, has been marked by scorching temperatures for much of the U.S. South, with the thermometer reaching triple digits in several places in Texas between June and July.
In that same period, at least two people died in the state while working under the stifling heat enveloping Texas, a 35-year-old utility lineman, and a 66-year-old USPS carrier. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 36 work-related deaths due to environmental heat exposure in 2021, the latest data available. This was a drop from 56 deaths in 2020, and the lowest number since 2017.
"Workers who are exposed to extreme heat or work in hot environments may be at risk of heat stress," Kathleen Conley, a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told Newsweek. "Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Heat can also increase the risk of injuries in workers as it may result in sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, and dizziness. Burns may also occur as a result of accidental contact with hot surfaces or steam."
While there is a minimum working temperature in the U.S., there's no maximum working temperature set by law at a federal level. The CDC makes recommendations for employers to avoid heat stress in the workplace, but these are not legally binding requirements.
The Biden administration has tasked the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with updating its worker safety policies in light of the extreme heat. But the federal standards could take years to develop—leaving the issue in the hands of individual states.
Things aren't moving nearly as fast as the emergency would require—and it's the politics around the way we look at work, the labor market, and the rights of workers in the U.S. that is slowing things down.
A Deep Political Divide
"There's remarkably little in terms of regulation, and of course, given our divided political views in this country—on the right, Republicans in general, are trying to resist more regulation that's premised on continuing global warming," Gregory DeFreitas, Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy at Hofstra University, New York, told Newsweek.
There's a bill, initially introduced in 2019 and now revived by Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, a Democrat, that would move in the direction of setting a federal standard for temperature levels, and other heat-related requirements.
The Heat Illness and Fatality Prevention Act would create a universal heat standard requirement through OSHA for workers threatened by hot working conditions.
"No worker should have to endure life-threatening heat to provide for their family. This would be an important step to protect Ohio workers on the job," said Brown in a statement available on his website. "We know too many workers still work in dangerous conditions, putting their health and safety on the line every day to provide for their families. There's not much dignity in a job where you fear for your health or your life."
Newsweek has contacted Brown for comment by phone but did not receive a response.
"Given the political divisions, it's hard to say what its chances of passage are, although you'd think that another record-setting year in heat would put more pressure on taking similar action," DeFreitas said.
Tumblr media

This political division over safety regulations in the workplace, according to DeFreitas, started during Donald Trump's presidency. "The minute Trump got in office, he declared war on regulations," he said. "In 2017, he cut OSHA's job safety rules, employers were not required to make as frequent accident reports, there were to be no surprise inspections of factories and workplaces," he said.
"As a result what you have is a weakened federal agency, but that fits with the idea of deregulating businesses and giving them more freedom—the so-called voluntary self-regulation, which was common under both the Bush and the Trump administration."
He added: "That's a deep philosophical orientation of the current Republican Party, regardless of what the dangers are, whether it is climate change or anything else, they want to cut as much regulation and regulatory steps as they can." Newsweek contacted OSHA but did not receive a prompt response.
Billions Up in Smoke
As well as harming or losing people, the country is losing money to the heat.
According to a recent study by the Adrienne-Arsht Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center, housed at the Atlantic Council, the U.S. is already losing approximately $100 billion on average every year from the drop in labor productivity caused by the current level of heat.
That's "approximately the annual budget for the Department of Homeland Security ($51.7 billion) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development ($44.1 billion) combined (U.S. Government Publishing Office 2019)," researchers write.
The study estimates that, if no significant effort is made to reduce emissions or adapt to extreme heat, labor productivity losses could double to nearly $200 billion by 2030 and reach $500 billion by 2050.
For labor experts, there's no doubt that the extreme heat, which is becoming more frequent due to climate change and our collective failure to bring down carbon emissions on a global level, calls for drastic changes in the way Americans work.
"It's a huge but under-appreciated issue that we're dealing with, not just with outdoor workers, but also oil and gas field workers, people working in warehouses, construction workers," Kurt Shickman, director of Extreme Heat Initiatives at the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center, told Newsweek. "It's a huge swath of our economy that's already increasingly affected by the heat today."
When it's really hot outside, people work more slowly and they are more prone to make mistakes and have accidents, said Shickman. "You may have situations where the weather is so dangerous that you just physically can't have people outside, so you lose work hours," he added.
"We're going to need all kinds of dramatic changes in terms of factory design, warehouse design, and workplace design," said DeFreitas. "The bill is going to be very, very high unless we do something dramatic soon."
Shickman thinks that change is going to depend on regulation. "I don't think we can count on this being self-policed by businesses. It hasn't been so far."
A State-Level Battle
In the immediate future, protecting workers from heat stress—when it's so hot that the body can't keep its ideal internal temperature and can suffer heat stroke and exhaustion—is then up to state lawmakers and the businesses themselves.
California, for example, has set a maximum temperature at which outdoor workers can safely do their job, as well as introducing other regulations aimed at protecting employees, like more frequent periods in the shade and water breaks. More action has been taken in this direction in a handful of states including Minnesota, Washington, Oregon, and New York.
But while states like California have succeeded in introducing effective safety regulations, in other states similar attempts have been rebuffed by the opposition of industry groups and lobbyists.
In Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott recently approved a law rescinding city and county ordinances requiring mandatory water breaks for construction workers—a move that generated much controversy and backlash from Texas Democrats. Supporters of the bill, on the other hand, said the law will help rein in local and county officials that have exceeded their authority and will give small businesses the consistency they need to invest and grow.
Tumblr media

In Nevada, lawmakers for months have put off giving final approval to heat safety regulations adopted by OSHA, as the state's Department of Business and Industry discusses the concerns of industry groups over the new policies, as reported by The Washington Post.
"With our workers outside during extreme heat, requiring basic water and rest breaks is just common sense—and it will save lives," Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat, told Newsweek. "As we continue to experience record heat waves, we need to hold employers accountable and protect workers across the country."
The Cost of Change
Investing in making the workplace safer for employees might cost companies more than they're willing to spend, even as they are losing workers' productivity and hours.
"A lot of the generalized skilled work, what we would call lower skilled work, is in warehouses," Lindsey Cameron, an assistant professor of management at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, told Newsweek. "Warehouses are big, massive football fields. It costs a lot of money and a lot of infrastructure to try to cool down. And sometimes it's just impossible because you have all these trucks going in and out and people going in and out."
Some businesses have already moved to protect their workers from heat, knowing that the cost of ignoring the issue could eventually be higher than trying to fix it.
Tumblr media

Jose Garza, the national environmental health and safety leader at California-headquartered general contractor DPR Construction, told Newsweek that the company—which has over 10,000 employees—has implemented heat safety procedures that go beyond the state-mandated regulation, including introducing cooling stations, handing out electrolyte drinks, and giving more breaks to workers.
"We see it as the cost of taking care of people and the right thing to do," he said. "You can either plan for it or react to it, because if you're not planning for it, those breaks are going to happen when the worker is no longer able to work, when they're sick, when they're well beyond the point where their bodies are unable to cool themselves down."
Garza said that employers who care about their workers should go "above and beyond" available regulation to protect them from heat.
'A Long Time' Coming
Experts agree that change won't come from the businesses—and will likely not come soon unless there's committed political action.
"It's really going to take both state and federal movement on this," DeFreitas said. "And I'm hoping that certainly in states like New York, where there does seem to be more attention to workplace safety, that they can move in the direction of the federal bill that's now stuck in progress."
"I don't think the United States has such a great backbone when it comes to climate issues," said Cameron. "We pulled out of the Paris Agreement [under former President Trump in 2017, but rejoined in 2021 under President Joe Biden]. I think there's going to be a lot more attention given to climate change, but it may take a long time to be able to see those changes."

Lakers dismiss T'Wolves, ready for Ja Morant
Tumblr media
(News4usonline) -  There was nothing surprising about the NBA playoff play-in game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves. For much of the game, both teams made enough head-scratching plays that would make you scream and want to pull your hair out. This was not one of the more exhilarating games you’d ever want to see.  Maybe because this is the playoffs. Both teams played sub-pat and inconsistent basketball during the regular season. Both teams mirrored that theme in their head-to-head matchup at Crypto.com Arena. It wasn’t pretty to watch, but the No. 7 seeded Lakers managed to shake off the No. 8 Timberwolves in overtime, coming away with a 108-102 win.  mood. pic.twitter.com/oB6CO5PeKq— Los Angeles Lakers (@Lakers) April 12, 2023 “We went 2-10; the analytic side said that we had 0.3 chance of making the postseason,” said LeBron James, who scored a team-high 30 points for the Lakers in the victory. “So, all you ask for is a chance, I guess. For us to turn around our season, and give ourselves an opportunity to compete for the Larry O’Brien trophy, that’s all you can ask for.” After sputtering out of the gate to start their season, the personnel moves the Lakers made before the trade deadline seems to have paid huge dividends for the team. Now the Lakers’ reward for beating Minnesota is a playoff series date with Ja Morant and the No. 2 Memphis Grizzlies. Good luck.  The Lakers struggled to beat Minnesota. It took the Timberwolves to go super ice cold in the fourth quarter, and then some luck in overtime before the Lakers managed to put the game away to move on for the right to play against Morant, the most electrifying player in the NBA.  “Really good team, very well-coached, very well-balanced,” James said about the Lakers’ next playoff opponent. “Obviously, they’ve got a guy named Ja Morant, another All-Star in Jaren Jackson , who’s up there, won defensive player of the year; he blocks shots, but offensively, he’s very dynamic as well. Tyus Jones, the point guard off the bench, has led the league in assist-turnover ratio like the last six years, so he compliments them very well.” And one, AD. pic.twitter.com/2o8APD9z1J— Los Angeles Lakers (@Lakers) April 12, 2023 James didn’t stop there in doling out the platitudes to Memphis.  “Desmond Bane, I think in his third year…second or third year, but he plays like a veteran,” James remarked in postgame comments. “His ability to shoot the ball from the three-point line and also his ability to attack in early transition. Dillion Brooks, the opportunity to go out there and you know, you can’t disrespect him because he makes shots. Xavier Tillman has been playing good basketball. Obviously, he’s been well-coached from his college days from coach Izzo until now, and so on and so on. They’ve got Luke Kennard, who broke my scoring record in high school. He passed me in high school. There’s a reason why. He’s a lase from the three-point line. His ability to shoot the ball is uncanny. And they’ve got so many other guys also off the bench that you can’t disrespect them because they will make you pay. Obviously, I haven’t thought about Memphis one minute.”  If the Lakers play at the level they did against the Timberwolves, the Memphis series might be a quick one. The Minnestoa-Los Angeles NBA play-in playoff game was hard to watch for a variety of reasons. Let’s be clear about one thing: Minnesota lost this game.  Yes, the Lakers eventually came away with the win, but the Timberwolves blew it. Quite simply, Minnesota deserved to lose after blowing a double-digit lead in the fourth period. At the 6:01 mark in the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves had scored 95 points and had a cushion of seven points.  Minnesota would not score again until three free throws made by guard Mike Conley with 0:01 left in the game sent the contest into overtime. Conley, who scored 23 points for the Timberwolves,   “Give them credit first off,” Conley said. “They did a good job of changing up their defensive scheme, switching from one through five, and made it tough for us to get the ball into Kat in positions where he could be effective, and we didn’t have a great rhythm, and forced us to take some tough shots.”  With the Timberwolves bumbling and stumbling all over themselves and suddenly forgetting how to penetrate the paint late in the final period, that created an opening for the Lakers to make a run, which they did.  ? pic.twitter.com/QVJ88RperV— Los Angeles Lakers (@Lakers) April 12, 2023 But this win was hardly anything to celebrate other than the fact that the Lakers got an opportunity to beat a talent-thin Minnesota team in order to move on to play a deeper and better athletic team in Memphis. At the end of the day, the Lakers won. That’s all that really matters.  But if this was a rating on the impressive scale, it would read about a 3. Ugly game. Ugly win. Now can the Lakers play this way against the electrifying Morant and the Grizzlies? Absolutely not. The Timberwolves went out and choked this game away rather than the Lakers going out and winning the game.  This game is also a reflection of where the Lakers are at as a team. There’s a reason (or a couple) why the Lakers found themselves in the play-in game in the first game. They’ve had to fight all season just to be in the position to have a chance to play in the postseason.  “Everyone knew what was riding on this one.” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “The days of rest you gain by coming out with this game is priceless. That’s on both teams’ minds, the direct competition as well as the circumstances around it-who wins and who loses. We expected a dogfight and they gave us one.” Read the full article

Denver Nuggets Add Bol Bol in Draft Night Deal With Miami Heat
Tumblr media
On June 21st, 2019, the Miami Heat traded the draft rights of forward-center Bol Bol to the Denver Nuggets for $1.2 million in cash considerations and a 2022 second round draft pick.
It seems like every year in the NBA Draft there’s a player whose draft stock falls down as the draft approaches.
2019′s player falling down the draft charts was Bol Bol. A projected lottery pick and the fourth ranked high school basketball prospect in the country, Bol ended up being selected 44th in the NBA Draft.
A unique talent with length, seven-foot height, ballhandling ability and the skill of a guard, Bol shined in college at the University of Oregon (21.0 PPG, 9.6 RPG and 2.7 BPG) but he suffered a stress fracture in his left foot after just nine games, cutting what would be his lone college season short.
Bol fell all the way down to the second round of the draft despite receiving a green room invitation, meaning he actually attended the draft. He was taken 44th by the Miami Heat who instantly traded him to the Denver Nuggets in a pre-arranged deal.
The Heat had already acquired Stanford forward and 32nd overall pick KZ Okpala for three future second round picks and saw an opportunity to replenish future assets by acquiring a second round pick for Bol.
Bol joined a Nuggets roster that had established itself as one of the bright and exciting young teams in the NBA during the 2018-19 season. Led by center Nikola Jokić and guard Jamal Murray, Denver was ready to further its pursuit of becoming a title contender.
The presence of Jokić and backup Mason Plumlee meant there were going to be limited opportunities for Bol. Denver presented an opportunity for the young center time to develop and recover from his foot fracture.
Bol spent much of the year on the sidelines. He did make eight appearances in the NBA G-League with the Windy City Bulls, averaging 12.0 PPG, 5.8 RPG and 2.3 BPG.
Denver was one of the top teams in the NBA. The team was 43-22 when the NBA season was put on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After the NBA season resumed in the summer with a bubble format based in Orlando, Florida, the Nuggets went 3-5 over a span of eight games to finish out the regular season. Bol was given a chance to play during the bubble exhibition  and regular season games due to injuries and Nuggets players having delayed arrivals due to positive COVID tests.
Bol played in seven bubble regular season games, averaging 5.7 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 0.9 APG and 0.9 BPG in 12.4 MPG. In the limited time, the seven-footer showed flashes of major talent such as his athleticism, ability to pass and handle the ball.

Denver finished the season as the third seed in the West with a 46-27 record. The Nuggets qualified for the postseason and matched up with the Utah Jazz in the first round. Jazz star Donovan Mitchell had 57 in the series opener but Jokić and Jamal combined for 65 points as the Nuggets pulled away late for a 135-125 overtime win.
The second game saw the Jazz lead by as much as 31 points as they comfortably won 124-105. The third game was similar as the Jazz built an early double digit lead. Utah led by 39 and annihilated the Nuggets 124-87.
Game Four was action-packed as Mitchell (51 points) and Murray (50) dueled back and forth. Mitchell scored 18 in the fourth quarter to help Utah withstand  a Denver rally and win 129-127.
Facing a 3-1 series deficit, the duo of Murray and Jokić combined for 73 points and the Nuggets used a 35-21 fourth quarter to take Game Five 117-107. Murray and Mitchell’s fireworks display continued into Game Six. The Nuggets guard crossed 50 again and Denver forced a Game Seven with a 119-107 victory.
The seventh and final game was ugly. Both teams shot under 40% and failed to reach 100 points. The game was tight but a Jokić hook shot gave Denver an 80-78 lead with 27 seconds left. Utah had two chances to the or take the lead but Mitchell turned the ball over with eight seconds left and Mike Conley missed a three at the buzzer as Denver held on for the 4-3 series win.
Denver went on to the second round where it was a heavy underdog against the Los Angeles Clippers. In the opener, the Clippers used a 49-24 run from the first to third quarter to take control in a 120-97 rout.
The Nuggets came out like gangbusters in the second game, jumping out to a 44-25 first quarter lead. The Clippers managed to get within five points but Jokić had 26 points and 18 rebounds as Denver held on for a 110-101 win.
The third game saw Clippers star Paul George score 32 points. the Clippers rallied in the fourth quarter and outscored Denver 29-19 in a 113-107 win. In Game Four, the Clippers had an early 18-point lead before the Nuggets tied the game early in the third quarter. A 21-5 Clippers run contributed to Los Angeles’ 96-85 win.
The victory gave the Clippers a 3-1 series lead. Facing the deficit, the Nuggets looked dead in the water early on in Game Five, trailing by 16 points in the first half. 35-year old veteran Paul Millsap sparked a run in the third quarter and Jamal Murray had 26 points in a 111-105 comeback victory to keep Denver alive.
In the sixth game, the Clippers led by 16 points at halftime, but the Nuggets outscored them 64-35 in the second half to cruise to a 111-98 win. Game Seven was similar as the Clippers blew another early double digit lead.
Murray had 40 points and Jokić had a triple double (16 points, 22 rebounds and 13 assists) as Denver made another miraculous 3-1 series comeback with a 104-89 result.
Denver advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 11 years and faced the Los Angeles Lakers. In the first game, Lakers star Anthony Davis dominated with 37 points and 10 rebounds in a 126-114 Los Angeles win. The second game saw the Lakers build a 10-point lead at halftime, but the Nuggets battled back.
Late in the game, Jokić and Davis exchanged shots. After a Jokić make with 20 seconds left, Denver had a 103-102 lead. The Lakers missed two shots but retained possession on both misses. Davis converted a three on an inbounds play at the buzzer to give the Lakers a 2-0 series lead.
The third game saw Jokić and Murray combine for 50 points as Denver led by as much as 20 points in a 114-106 win. Los Angeles took a 3-1 series lead after Davis and LeBron James combine for 60 points in a 114-108 Lakers victory. James (38 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists) was phenomenal once again in Game Five as the Lakers prevented a Denver series comeback with a 117-107 victory.
During Denver’s playoff run, Bol played just 21 total minutes, averaging 4.8 PPG and 1.3 RPG.
After his first year in the NBA, Bol agreed to convert his two-way contract with Denver into a standard NBA deal for two years and $4.2 million.
The Nuggets tried to keep its roster together for the 2020-21 season, but lost starting forward Jerami Grant to the Detroit Pistons in free agency. Still, most of the roster came back except for a couple of bench rotation free agents and two first round picks.
Denver looked to continue its winning ways. The Nuggets began the year 1-4 but quickly righted the ship, going 10-3 in the next 13 games to get to 11-7. The team had its share of ups and downs but thanks to the performances of Jokić and Murray, was in the thick of the Western Conference playoff chase.
Positioned in fifth place with a 26-18 record, the Nuggets made a move at the trade deadline. The team dealt Gary Harris, rookie R.J. Hampton and a first round pick to the Orlando Magic for Aaron Gordon and Gary Clark. Denver also acquired center JaVale McGee from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The move gave the Nuggets a bonafide starter at power forward to improve its defense and its starting lineup. After the trades, the Nuggets quickly ran off eight consecutive wins (seven with Gordon in the lineup). The team found its flow and was playing excellent basketball and was starting to look like a title contender.
Those title hopes came to a halt after Murray tore the ACL in his left knee in April, cutting his season short. The Nuggets went 13-5 over their last 18 games to finish the year 47-25. Bol rarely played in his second year. He appeared in 32 contests (two starts) and managed 2.2 PPG and 0.8 RPG in 5.0 MPG.
In the 2021 postseason, the Nuggets faced the Portland Trailblazers in the opening round. Portland got hot in the first game, knocking down 19-of-40 from three. Portland star Damian Lillard led the way with 34 points and 13 assists in a 123-109 victory.
Jokić led the way in Game Two with 38 points as Denver won easily, 128-109. The third game in Portland was a surprise. Jokić was his usual dominant self with 36 points, but guard Austin Rivers came alive in the fourth quarter, nailing four three-pointers and scored 21 points total in a Nuggets 120-115 win.
Portland rebounded in Game Four, leading by as much as 33 points in a 115-95 victory. With the series tied, both teams were set to battle in a competitive Game Five. Lillard was fantastic, recording 55 points and knocking down several long distance triples including two different threes that sent the game to overtime and double overtime.
In the end, Jokić’s 38 points and a clutch three from Michael Porter Jr. helped Denver escape with a 147-140 win. Game Six saw Jokić score 36 points and the Nuggets pulled away late to win 126-115. They won the series 4-2.
Denver advanced to the second round and battled the Phoenix Suns. Early on, the Suns took control. Four Suns players scored at least 20 points in a 122-105 Phoenix rout. The Suns continued to dominate, winning 123-98 in Game Two.
The Suns backcourt of Chris Paul and Devin Booker combined for 55 points as Phoenix controlled Game Three, 116-102. Denver put up a better fight in Game Four but Booker and Paul combined for 71 points in a 125-118 Suns win and series sweep. Bol played in three games and six minutes during the 2021 playoff run.
After the season, the Nuggets were in a holding pattern. Knowing Murray was likely out for the entire 2021-22 season, Denver kept much of its core together, losing only Paul Millsap from its rotation. The team re-signed free agents Will Barton and JaMychal Green while also adding guard Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland as a draft pick.
Bol played in Summer League with the Nuggets and was effective. The big man averaged 21.7 PPG on 44.2% from the field, 6.7 RPG and 2.3 BPG in three exhibition games.
Behind the continued MVP efforts from Jokić, Denver began the season well with a 9-4 start. The team soon struggled with a losing streak and the news that Michael Porter, Jr. would be out what would be the rest of the season after a back injury put even more of a damper on the team’s hopes of contending.
Denver continued to hover around .500 and with Bol still behind several other frontcourt players in the rotation, the team decided to move the young seven-footer.
In January, the Nuggets agreed to a trade with the Detroit Pistons. In the deal, Bol went to the Detroit Pistons for Rodney McGruder and a 2022 second round pick. The trade was voided three days after because Bol failed his physical due to a physical that revealed a broken right foot.
Soon after Bol decided to have surgery on the foot. Nearly a week after the voided deal, the Nuggets agreed to send Bol and guard PJ Dozier (also out for the season) to the Boston Celtics in a three-team deal also involving the San Antonio Spurs that brought guard Bryn Forbes to the team.
At the point of the trade, Bol had appeared in 14 games, compiling 2.4 PPG and 1.4 RPG in 5.8 MPG. Bol ended his run in Denver with 53 games played, 2.7 PPG and 1.2 RPG. He shot 48% from the field, 38% from the three-point line and 67% from the free-throw line.
The second rounder Miami acquired was forfeited as part of the NBA’s investigation into the Heat holding early free agent talks with point guard Kyle Lowry.
Bol Bol on his skill (via Nuggets.com):
“My game is pretty unique because for my size, I can dribble pretty well, can shoot from anywhere pretty well, and my passing is pretty good. I can just do a lot of things that people my size can’t do.”
On joining the Nuggets:
“Towards the end of the season, I started watching a lot of [Nikola] Jokić highlights because of his great passing ability, and that's something I want to add to my game. I watched a lot of his highlights and he’s a great, great player.
“The Nuggets were a great team last season and I’m excited to be a part of the team. Because of how great the team is, that will help me because [I’ll have] great players around me and the great organization. I think that will also help me become a better player.”
On the disappointment of being drafted late (via Denver Post):
“The thing I’ll remember is definitely being drafted late in the second round instead where I thought I was going to be drafted, like somewhere between the middle of the first round or toward the end.”
Denver Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly on adding Bol Bol (via Nuggets.com):
“We’re fortunate to add another young piece, a guy we think highly of. We think his skillset [and] his pedigree, who he is as a guy, will fit in well in the locker room. We started the night with no draft picks and we left with a guy who we think has a real chance to be impactful down the road.”
If the team had any concern with Bol’s injury history:
“We’re not concerned as to why he fell, we feel very fortunate that he fell [to us]. As the night progressed, we got pretty aggressive. He was a guy that we circled much higher on the board. We didn’t have him where we picked, we had him much much higher.”
On finding a steal in the draft (via Denver Post):
“We thought we were going to get a guy that was greatly undervalued as the night progressed. Who knows where we’ll be picking in the future, but when you get a guy with the tools like Bol Bol, it’s hard not to be aggressive. And it’s hard not to be excited.”

Lesbians and Hiring
Diversity is a buzzword that many companies and large corporations have latched onto when it comes to the hiring process, but is diversity what hiring managers are actually looking for? When it comes to diversity among gay and lesbian individuals, a 2020 meta-analysis of hiring experimentations concludes “no”. In “Discrimination against Gays and Lesbians in Hiring Decisions: a Meta-Analysis”, Alexandre Flage researched 17 studies that used over 50,000 resumes to test discrimination based on sexual orientation. These studies used “correspondence testing” characterized by engineered, fake applicants being sent to hiring employers. The study acknowledges the vast amount of variables that can go into hiring and other prejudices that can be incorporated when choosing an applicant including if the job’s demographics predominantly consist of women or men, and if the job is highly skilled or lower-skilled (Flage, 2020, pg. 671). The research produced a very consistent result despite applicant variables; lesbian women had 39% lower odds of receiving a response. An interesting caveat was those chances were lower if the resume included sexuality openly divulged, but higher chances if sexuality was disclosed only by revealing the gender or name of their partner.  Lesbians also faced further discrimination in jobs that are associated with being “feminine” (Flage, 2020, pg. 675-680). These women are facing what Patricia Hill Collins coined the matrix of domination. At the intersection of being a woman and being a lesbian are opportunities for patriarchy to dominate both. Prejudice may make an employer see a female applicant as weaker, less educated, or less fit for leadership roles (Conley, 2019. pg. 315-321). Whereas, being a lesbian could bring forth prejudices about them being too masculine and unable to corporate with other men (many stereotypes around lesbians paint them as man-hating). This double edge sword makes employment especially hard for lesbians as either script or role they choose, they could face sanctions.

This is a viewpoint editorial by Peter Conley, an item supporter at Vercel and a factor for Bitcoin Magazine. How huge can Bitcoin tasks, facilities and chances get as a whole? Not "crypto" as a whole-- simply Bitcoin. The Bitcoin network is growing at the exact same speed as the web. We are aware of the size of the "financial worth" this network holds. Since composing, bitcoin has a worldwide market capitalization of around $445 billion. What about the size of "work worth" it can produce? In 1999, the task title iOS engineer didn't exist. If you do a fundamental search on LinkedIn you'll discover over 33,000 open functions with that title alone. These are open task positions, not the variety of individuals currently used because position. In 2002, front end React designer tasks did not exist. On LinkedIn, you'll discover over 47,000 open functions at the time of composing. Very same with "AWS Engineer"-- nonexistent in2004 Now? 203,000 task openings Get where I'm opting for this? A comparable pattern is taking place in the Bitcoin area. In 2013, bitcoin mining and Wallet interactions lead, Lightning facilities engineer and bitcoin mining operations supervisor positions didn't exist. Not one. Now there are lots if not numerous these kinds of positions offered. What will these chances appear like in 2038? Will the LinkedIn (or comparable) look for "Lightning engineer" return 10,000- plus outcomes? Breaking Down Bitcoin Subsectors And Potential Bitcoin Career Paths Let's check out the present subsectors of Bitcoin to set out existing and future chances: Bitcoin Education We're still early. If Bitcoin is the web, it's 1997 Individuals will long for beneficial academic material in order to comprehend bitcoin's significance and how to purchase it, trade it, keep it and negotiate with it. Do you keep in mind the 1990 s, when individuals attempted to discuss to you how crucial the web will be? Keep in mind when significant news anchors didn't understand what e-mail was? Keep in mind when Dave Letterman chuckled in the face of Bill Gates when he attempted to describe the significance of the web? We're in the exact same precise area on the timeline if you map Bitcoin to the web-- it's virtually the exact same story. Since of this, there will be a market requirement for fantastic communicators to notify the general public of bitcoin's value. Some of my individual preferred teachers in the area are: Robert Breedlove, Lyn Alden, Michael Saylor, Natalie Brunell and Jeff Booth Bitcoin Mining Jobs Examples of mining business are Cathedra, Marathon, and Compass Mining. Presently, the bitcoin mining sector has the most public business and the biggest quantifiable market cap compared to other kinds of Bitcoin business. Bitcoin mining might possibly be the biggest subsegment, both in regards to market cap and staff member count, merely since the bitcoin mining procedure requires a big quantity of physical facilities and capital investment. Bitcoin Engineering Jobs Inventions we can not predict will be developed on top of the Bitcoin procedure. Were the engineers at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ever efficient in anticipating e-commerce or online dating when they initially developed the web? Was Alan Turing ever efficient in anticipating smart devices after he developed the world's very first computer system? Now, take a look at the number of developments were developed on top of those core developments. I do not believe, back in 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto ever pointed out principles like seed expressions, multisignature wallets, and the Lightning Network, however here we are. The chances are unlimited here. If you can dream it and code it, you can make it a truth. Bitcoin Mining Pools In addition to bitcoin mining business, there are completely different "mining swimming pool" business, like Foundry. This can be a whole subsector in and of itself. Mining swimming pools resemble monetary service business and procedure effectiveness business for the miners.
Mining swimming pools de-risk the variable benefits from the mining procedure and permit more individuals in the network to have steady sats circulation. Bitcoin Exchange Jobs The requirement to transform USD to BTC will constantly exist till fiat currencies entirely collapse. That's where bitcoin exchanges been available in. Exchanges were a few of the very first-- and now the wealthiest-- bitcoin business. Examples are Kraken (begun in 2011) and Coinbase (begun in 2012). The majority of them have actually because rotated to providing cryptocurrencies at big, however there are exceptions: Swan Bitcoin is a bitcoin-only exchange. Anticipate this area to broaden as more altcoins like Terra/LUNA start to implode. Bitcoin Software Wallet Jobs The scope at which bitcoin wallets will be embedded in almost every interface (both physical and digital) will be mind-bending. They will be as common as e-mail addresses or charge card submission types. Every maker and site that accepts money, charge card, wire transfers and PayPal will be matched-- if not completely changed-- with bitcoin wallets. You'll likewise require several type of wallets. One as a quasi-checking account (hot wallet) and another as a cost savings account (freezer). There will be a requirement for carrying out these wallets into existing services and there will be a requirement for education about how to negotiate with the Lightning Network, how to handle a hot wallet and freezer wallet and how to determine tax occasions. Bitcoin Custodians Custodians assist users hold a backup secret for multisignature wallets. They even have services that focus on this service for organizations, not simply people. 2 of the greatest gamers in this area are Casa and Unchained Capital. Bitcoin Hardware Wallets You've most likely become aware of the hardware wallets Ledger and Trezor, however have you become aware of ColdCard? ColdCard specializes as a bitcoin-only hardware wallet. Expect the hardware wallet area to get more imaginative and innovative. We've only simply begun to scratch the surface area on freezer methods. Bitcoin Node Producers Bitcoin nodes are the specialized hard disks that host the journal of all bitcoin deals going back to the very first block in January2009 There are numerous business that make and offer these specialized mini servers. Some consist of Nodl, RoninDojo, and The Bitcoin Machine. As the marketplace cap of bitcoin grows, more individuals will have skin in the video game causing more individuals wishing to decentralize and secure the network. Bitcoin Physical Products The sky's the limitation for bitcoin physical items. Opendime is a terrific example. Other examples consist of the BLOCKCLOCK by Coinkite. There are steel-based gadgets for backing up secrets like Codl's Punchplate or the CypherWheel by CypherSafe. Bitcoin "Bridge" Services Professional services will not disappear, they'll simply move to the bitcoin requirement. Individuals will still require in-person assistance to shift to the monetary system like bitcoin freezer consulting. New courses are brand-new organization chances. A fantastic example would be the home mortgage market. Are you bitcoin abundant however fiat property bad and attempting to get a home loan? Look no more than Hoseki, an emerging innovation to show your holdings without giving up custody. As brand-new requirements emerge, a growing number of service services and full-time work chances will emerge for assisting others with onboarding to the Bitcoin network. This is a visitor post by Peter Conley. Viewpoints revealed are totally their own and do not always show those of BTC Inc. or Bitcoin Magazine. Read More
