Book Two: The Selection
“Dream mo ba talaga magturo, Sir Cheese?”
“Itong book.” Ipinakita niya ang cover ng binabasa niya. The Selection ni Kierra Cass. “Naisip ko lang, what if may ganito talaga in real life. Yung parang hindi ka puwedeng mangarap para sa sarili mo kasi you were born for something else na hindi mo gusto.”
“Hmm.”
“Travel?”
“Kinda.” Tumango naman ako. “Nakakapag-travel naman ako every quarter. May means naman ako to travel.”
“Tapos work mo ’to rito.
“I was working sa data collection. May bachelor’s degree ako sa library and information science. May master’s degree ako sa humanities and social science. Hindi ko first choice maging professor since exposed ako sa restorations and other nerdy whatnots.”
“I don’t think it has something to do with the IQ.
Mas marami ang medical-related and hospitality and culinary applicants since ’yon ang maraming estudyante rito sa school.”
“Sa bagay.” Tumango-tango na naman siya. “Mahirap ding mangarap kapag mahirap ang papangarapin.”
“But dreams are relative,” dagdag ko. “’Yang book na binabasa mo, before ko ’yang mabasa, may nakakuwentuhan ako about diyan. Her name’s Alvic.”
Ate Alvic is a criminal data analyst and she’s working at a background checking company. The nature of the work wasn’t a surprise kasi family business din siya ng lola ko kay Momsky. Cute, mukhang huggable. Ombre ang buhok na wavy, and the nature of her work wasn’t that visible sa looks, but she has piercing eyes. And she looked so sweet and friendly.
What surprised me was the book choice.
Most of the time, I judge the book by its cover—literally. Kasi separate ang creator ng book cover and their rights, separate din ang rights ng author. So I have to look at the book parts by parts and credit where credit is due.
She asked me one time when I was working as a student assistant dito sa library, “Ano ang masasabi mo sa mga nagku-quiet quitting sa work or nabu-burn out?”
Kinabukasan, ganoon ulit.
Lifeless.
Mentally, ide-drain ka talaga niya kasi you’re forcing yourself to do something na, in the first place, hindi mo naman ginusto.”
“What if ginusto mo naman siya before? Passionate ka roon sa job before, pero na-burn out ka na lang katagalan. Kaya pa ba siyang ma-ignite ulit?”
Hindi ko ’yon agad nasagot. I was twenty, barely earning for myself, umaasa pa rin sa allowance ng parents, but I worked sa library for a discounted tuition fee kasi malapit na rin ang graduation ko.
Privileged kid, yes.
Passionate po kayo noong una, then that means, at first, you like what you’re gonna do.
Mahina siyang natawa saka napatango.
“May point,” napapangiting sabi niya.
Nakikita ko kay Ate Alvic na rooting pa siya ng something more sa status niya that time, and I saw nothing wrong about that. It was part of growing na hindi ka puwedeng maging stagnant sa kung ano ka lang ngayon. You have to change the course of your life and you have to decide for yourself.
“Oh, I see.” Tumango-tango naman siya sa isinagot ko. “Dream course?”
Mabilis akong tumango. “Yes po.”
“Suwerte mo naman. Bihira kong marinig ’yang course mo.”
Naiilang akong ngumiti saka napahimas ng batok. “Wala po kasi masyadong pera pagka-graduate, sabi nila.”
“Hindi naman siguro. Buti na-pursue mo.”
Alanganin siyang tumango. Parang oo na parang hindi.
“Dream course n’yo rin po?”
Mabilis siyang umiling, walang sinabing kahit na ano.
At that moment, napaisip ako. Kasi ang daming estudyante na nag-aaral lang for the sake of diploma at masabing naka-graduate.
“Hmm . . .” Tumingin siya sa itaas, parang nag-iisip. “Let’s say ako, may work na kasi ako.
May nakaka-graduate po kahit 70 years old na. But since may second-thinking moments kayo, mas nangingibabaw ang happiness and self-satisfaction n’yo sa ngayon kaysa sa dream course n’yo. It will consume time po kasi. Mag-aaral kayo, mahahati ang time n’yo.
. .” pag-ulit niya sa sinabi ko. “What if possible na makabalik ka.
Everything happens for a reason.
I have my own fair share of regrets, but the more I cling to them, the more I couldn’t move forward to have a better future.
And the first way to grow is to step out sa dark place kung saan sila na-stuck. But then again, pace means moving from one place to another kahit gaano pa kabagal. It wasn’t about staying at one place, and magically, magmu-move ka na sa kabila.
“Cheesedog was Here,” pagbasa niya at ibinalik na ulit ’yon sa page. “Grabe, sipag magbasa, sir. May favorite quote ka rito? Nakakabisado mo ba ’to lahat?”
“By birth you have been blessed, and it is time to acknowledge that blessing,” sabi ko.
Biglang lumapad ang ngisi niya. “Hala, angas!” “Dito naman, ‘It's the fear of looking stupid that keeps you from being awesome.’”
Natatawa akong tumango. “Hindi sa nang-e-encourage, but it was a good way to tell everyone na galing ka sa book, and you read everything from the paper to its soul.”
“Hahaha! May point ka diyan, sir.”
Isinara na niya ang libro at nginitian ako. “Kumakain ka ng kwek-kwek, sir?”
Nakangiti akong tumango. “Yeah.”
“Libre mo ’ko, sir.”
“Hahaha! Jazmin, Jazmin, Jazmin.” Napailing na lang din ako. “Sige, tara sa labas. Kain tayo.”

Homewarming Findings Note #2: Hotdog Talk
While looking in the cookbook, we found different types of hotdogs. Mustard, relish, ketchup (even though I read catsup haha)
And I didn't know that there were more hotdogs. There were stew, popcorn, cheesedog (shouldn't have putted that inside the hotdog), macaroni, reverse, peas, corn.

I know there is one that has pins all over, which is the hardworking hotdog one. Sheesh, who's going to eat that with sharp pins?
I've also made a hotdog friend and named him, Diggity. Hot diggity dog!
But then... I found something unusual about the number 24.

Book One: Tao Te Ching
Pinanghawakan ko ang Hotdog ko.
Wait, parang ang sagwa pakinggan.
Pinanghawakan ko ang pagiging Hotdog ko.
Puwede na. Okay.
I was in Grade Two when everyone officially named me Hotdog. I still write my Carlisle Arjeantine name kapag kailangang isulat, but nickname? Hotdog talaga.
I was Hotdog Mendoza way back then. To be honest, hindi siya weird na nickname, because I had a classmate, and she was named as Kukay. I found Hotdog a bit presentable than Kukay during those days.
I was enjoying being Hotdog in an empirical manner when I realized, there was nothing special about being Hotdog.
First Year High School, ang random ng thought, everyone knew me as Hotdog while some called me Arjan. My mom used to call me Cali, and it was confusing me in another level kasi hindi ko alam kung ano ang dapat itawag sa akin.
You had a freaking name, and it was legally applied, and no one wants to use it for you, even yourself.
Same kay Kukay. Ang real name niya, Angelica Marie Joy R. San Vicente. But no one called her Angelica or Marie or Joy, or any of it but Kukay. Like, dude, for real?
Symbolic for me ang nickname na Hotdog kasi sobrang rare kong kumain ng hotdog kahit noong bata pa ’ko. Laging cheesedog. So, I asked my dad some time when I was six, “Pops, bakit may ganito na white sa hotdog?”
It was a white, gewy substance, dripping at the tip of the hotdog. And damn, it sounded so not safe for work, but it was.
“Kasi special kapag may cheese. Kapag, wala, common hotdog lang siya.”
Intrusion! Intrusion!
But yes, it was a sudden flashback during my childhood days na kapag may cheese, special.
Ang bibingkang may cheese, special.
Ang ensaymadang may cheese, special.
Ang putong may cheese, special.
Ang burger na may cheese, special.
There might be something about cheese that makes everything so special.
“Kaya pumayag kang maging Cheesedog?”
Ah! My mind was wandering around, kausap ko nga pala si Jazmin pero Z.
“Cheesedog is a good source of discussion, anyway,” sagot ko.
Jazmin pero Z is my student. Humanities class.
Well, she’s . . . she’s interesting. Very . . . interesting in a sense that she found me in a place where no one wants to look for me.
There’s something about the timing na hindi ko ine-expect. There’s something about the idea na ang sarap i-look forward because someone found you where you’ve been.
She’s cute. I like her eyes. Madaldal.
“Because I want you, guys, to understand that book?”
“Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu,” pagbasa niya sa librong pinababasa ko sa buong klase for a reflection paper. “The Book of Way.”
Her name is Cherminne. I was nineteen when I first found this.”
Ako pa ang nagbuklat ng page at ipinakita ang bookmark ko roon sa page na may memorable line for me.
“We wu wei,” nakangiting sabi ko. “When nothing is done, nothing is left undone.
It was fascinating, for me. Si Ate Cherminne kasi, virtual assistant siya. Sobrang broad ng pagiging VA, and I was a student way back then. She has an expressive eyes, and she looked at me like she was reading me until the very fiber of my existence.
And nineteen years old wasn’t that old enough to know something about life in general. And she’s double my age.
Ate Cherminne and I were on the same table, and she was reading that book habang naghihintay ako sa kanya. We had a small talk, some questions about life, as in sobrang random na hindi naman normally pinag-uusapan ng dalawang taong hindi rin naman magkakilala.
She asked, “Tingin mo, simple lang ang buhay?”
I answered, “Yes po.”
She smiled at me. “Why?”
“Simple lang ang life because it’s more of living and knowing why you live?” hindi sure na sagot ko.
“If simple lang, bakit mahirap maging masaya?”
“Hmm.” I really thought about that part. “Subjective po siguro ang happiness. Siguro nakadepende ’yon sa source of happiness nila kaya mahirap.”
“So, dahil ba sa constant craving nila for something they do not have, kaya mahirap maging masaya?”
Maybe it was about that constant craving gaya ng sabi ni Ate Cherminne, or maybe it was about the contentment na kung enough for you ang kung anong meron ka, you’ll feel happy kasi satisfied ka na. You don’t have to crave for more, you don’t have to ask for anything else.
Maybe it was about perspective, depende kung saang side ka tumitingin.
“When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly. When people see some things as good, other things become bad,” pagbasa ni Jazmin sa isang page ng book.
“Hmm. Quiz ba ’to? May score ba ’to, sir?
“Cheesedog Was Here.”
“Yeah. I am different from ordinary people.”
Bigla siyang tumawa sa ’kin. “Ang GGSS! Legit ba?”
Ako naman ang napangiti sa kanya. “Joke lang, ang bilis mong maniwala.”
“Kaya ko nga tinanong kung legit ba. Grabe siya, ha. Pero seryoso, natatandaan mo pa?”
“Yep!” Tumango naman ako. “If you want to become whole, let yourself be partial. If you want to become full, let yourself be empty. If you want to be reborn, let yourself die. More like if you want to be one, become one.”
“Sir, hindi na makatao subject mo. Nakakabobo na, ha. Hindi pa nga ako nakaka-recover sa I exist; therefore, I am mo.
“Every moment that passes by is a new piece of time, a new chance to make things right as they were before, a new start to do good as it was written for us long ago. Every life has an opportunity to change its ways if it wants to be happy again,” pagbasa niya roon. “Buti pa ’to mabilis arukin. Wala ka bang ganito, sir? Kaysa yung one plus one mo.”
“Hahaha! Magbasa ka na. Ikaw una kong tatawagin bukas sa recitation.”
“Hoy! Namemersonal ka na!”
“Hahaha!”
Life is composed of simple things that make us happy. A simple joke, the laughter of a cute kid, a short conversation with someone you adore, a cute toy. And I guess it wasn’t complicated at all. We just have to look at it as something worth its existence.

Cheesedog
i am very cheesy and stretchable :3 you try and pull me apart and i just keep going. never ending. becoming infinitely thinner until i can slip through the molecules comprising your body, causing you to drop me. i then clip through the floor, reaching an otherwise inaccessible trigger to send me straight to the credits, beating the game in 4:58.21, and achieving a new any% world record, smashing the 5 minute barrier for the first time.

Currently taking a little breather in the middle of nomming down on tonight's leftover rice delight. I hadn't made any in a while, and we had suitable stuff, so a version of omuraisu it is.
Tonight's take is sort of a weird-but-tasty cheesedog version. I used sliced-up sausages that were open in the fridge plus plenty of veggies in the fried rice, and layered a little sliced cheese in between the rice and egg. Topping with the classic ketchup, plus a squeeze of sriracha and a sprinkle of crispy fried onions.
My omelet ended up pretty mangled, mostly because the pan wasn't quite hot enough when it went in. May not look nearly as nice that way, but it still tastes good. (But, no photos of the half-devoured plateload of whatever this is tonight!)
If you really don't like ketchup (like Mr. C), I've also made pretty good pizza-themed variations and at least one topped with salsa before. Japanese-style curry sauce is another pretty popular option. Easy enough to turn out vegetarian versions, and I probably would have tonight if we hadn't had the open package of varmkorv at the ready. Pretty flexible all around, in terms of what's likely to be tasty in something like this.
Not a bad filling makeshift meal, at all.

Melting (and cracking up) at the latest video on Martin's instagram, it's so cute that he and the younger cast get along so well 🥰
Some highlights:
Martin calling them 'my cobras 🐍' in his description
Jacob pretending to tuck him in with the airplane blanket
Martin accidentally calling Jacob 'Jason' and Jacob sarcastically replying "oh thanks dad" 🤣🤣
Martin's relatable OTT reactions to Jacob eating his hotdog without mustard and Xolo's cheesedog
Xolo's HUGE bite of the cheesedog with Martin going 'oh GOD'
Xolo's in depth review of his cheesedog
Just the fact that Martin likes this random ass video enough to post it 😆
And then this happened in their Stories 😂😂
Tumblr media
Some inside joke maybe? 😆 Who knows lol. It's just really cute seeing them being silly and having fun together ❤️
