Women’s Champions League: where the semi-finals will be won and lost
This weekend brings the first legs of the Women’s Champions League semi-finals and I am particularly intrigued to see how my old club Chelsea approach their tie against Barcelona. This is the third encounter between the clubs in the space of four seasons and it will be interesting to see what Chelsea’s coaching staff have learned from those previous games – the 2021 final and 2023 semi-final, which both ended in defeat.
To draw on my recollections of playing in those matches, in 2021 we went into the final with a high press and the attitude that ‘we’re going to do our thing’. But we all know how that worked out – within 20 minutes we’d conceded three times and by half-time it was 4-0, which is how that final finished.
Last year, as a consequence, we took a more cautious approach. We changed to a back three and tried to minimise their chances on goal and I think we did it quite well though, in the process, we sacrificed our own attacking game to a degree. In our 1-0 first-leg loss at home, we had an xG of only 0.35. Hopefully, this time Chelsea can find the perfect blend and play their own game while also constricting Barcelona.
Of course, it won’t be easy as Barcelona – like the Spain national team – are going like a train right now. In my first column in February, I spoke about playing against Spain with Sweden and the challenge of stopping their play in the half-spaces between the centre-back and full-back, which they are so good at exploiting through Aitana Bonmatí. This time I’d like to single out another player – namely, the Barcelona right winger Caroline Graham Hansen, who is having an incredible season. She scored in both legs against Chelsea last season and has been even better this year with 17 goals and 16 assists in the Liga F. With Barcelona functioning so well as a team centrally, they can get the ball to her in the wide spaces and give her the one v one situations in which she flourishes. Therefore, Chelsea must keep a player tight to her and also to try to stop the supply line of passes out wide.
As for my old team, just like for last season’s semi-final, they look certain to be without Millie Bright, who has only just returned to training after her knee injury. She will be missed, as will Sam Kerr, the leader of the front line. Yet if you’re looking for positives, one potential upside is that it might not be easy for Barcelona to analyse Chelsea. They have used a lot of players this season with different combinations in the back line and midfield and this unpredictability could be an asset. A case in point is Lauren James, who could play as centre-forward, the No 10 or in the wide areas. Lauren has been injury-free this season and has played at a consistently high level and it’s not easy for opponents to set up to stop her as she can float around and perform in different areas.
Another possible positive for Chelsea is that Barcelona are without their injured centre-back Mapi León. She was very good against us last year, both in stopping attacks and building the play. We had a plan to exploit their high line and get Sam in behind her and Irene Paredes, the other centre-back. However, the pair of them read it well and dropped back to deny Sam the space.
When you look at Barcelona’s unbeaten run in their domestic competitions, it contrasts with Chelsea’s recent domestic form with their defeats in the League Cup final and FA Cup semi-final. I’d argue that, playing in England, Chelsea face bigger tests more often yet Barcelona, to their credit, never seem to let their standards drop and whenever a big test comes around, they show up. If I have to make a prediction, therefore, my head tells me Barcelona are the best club side in the world right now and so will edge it. Of course, my heart is hoping for Chelsea and although they’ve have had those recent setbacks, a huge characteristic of their success under Emma Hayes has been their ability to bounce back from disappointments and produce a performance when it matters most.
As for the other, all-French, semi-final between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain, I would have made Lyon clear favourites a few months ago but not any longer. I actually scored Bayern’s winner at PSG in the group stage in November but I have been impressed by how they have gelled as a team since then. Watching their quarter-final against Häcken, I saw a settled, solid side who have found a way to really capitalise on the speed of winger Tabitha Chawinga.
Before our two games against them with Bayern, we looked at their threat on the left side with both Chawinga and full-back Sakina Karchaoui, who gets over a lot of crosses. What I like about Chawinga is that she’s a forward who, with her individual quality, speed and strength, can make something out of nothing. At Bayern we experienced that in our 2-2 draw with PSG in Munich in December when with her speed, she intercepted a backpass which our goalkeeper had looked the favourite to reach.
She also scored when PSG drew 1-1 in Lyon in their most recent league meeting in February and with Marie-Antoinette Katoto alongside her, it’s clear PSG have a strong attacking threat. At the same time, though, I consider Lyon a more complete team. It’s true they’ve not yet faced a serious test in the competition but they have more than 11 world-class players. And I can speak from recent personal experience as my Sweden team lost 1-0 last week to a France side including several of Lyon’s best players. At centre-back Wendie Renard was really solid against us and underlined her set-piece threat once again by scoring the winning goal. Alongside her, Griedge Mbock now looks back to her best after injury.
Up front, meanwhile, I faced Kadidiatou Diani, who is the Champions League’s leading scorer with seven goals. Seeing her up close, I could sense she was in good shape. When you play an attacker who’s in form, things just seem to happen for them and I recall one incident in particular where, without producing a fantastic dribble, she was still able to get the ball away from several of our players. She is another player who can create something out of nothing and could have a key role, especially with Eugénie Le Sommer missing after suffering a knee injury in that same game against Sweden.
Like Chelsea and Barcelona, Lyon are unbeaten in this Champions League campaign, they tend to get the better of PSG in their domestic competition and I expect they’ll do so again over these two legs. That said, I really do think any of these four semi-finalists have the quality to go on and win the trophy. Whereas the quarter-final ties each had a clear favourite, this time anything could happen. I hope as many people as possible tune in as we could be in for a treat with two dramatic ties full of twists and turns.

So, I'm a relatively new FCB fan and I've been doing some research about why the club had a downfall. What I understood was that everything went to shit since Neymar left. Plus he didn't even have any legit reason to leave apart from more money being offered by PSG. People say he left because he was in "Messi's shadow" but that's not true. All I saw was love and appreciation for him by the fans and his fellow players. Especially Messi. He treated him with so much love and respect. Even now, after going through so much shit at PSG, Neymar doesn't seem to want to leave that club. In my opinion, he is one reason why Barcelona went downhill. The club spent so much money on his replacements which all ended in failure. I think if he hadn't left at that time, Barcelona would be in a relatively better place right now. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I interpreted. Please correct me if I'm getting it wrong or if I missed some important thing amidst all of this. I have nothing against Neymar, he's a wonderful player, but I can't help but put a little blame on him.
Hii ! I love ranting about this stuff, so warning: long ass ramble, I'm putting it beneath.
I think it's fairly common for people to assume Neymar's departure in 2017 was the thing that started FCB "downfall" (which is a pretty dramatic term in of itself), because it's such a public move that made everyone talk. It's a transfer whose consequences on the market value of players and the way we appreciate those is still underappreciated; genuinely, that Neymar saga is mad, it changed everything (to me, for the worse). But the decline of FCB, the institution, began way earlier than 2017. 2017 is kind of, the first most visible consequence of every prior stuff.
Everything was a mess by 2006/2008, for the team & institutionally wise. It got better from 2008 - 2012, under Pep Guardiola (coach) & Laporta/Rosell (presidents, although both not v good men) & which is now commonly referred to as the "golden age" of FCB's recent History. Then, from 2012 on, everything kind of started to decline. It's not very visible since we won the treble in 2014-2015 (KING SHIT VISCA BARÇA VISCA CATALUNYA etc. etc.) , but already behind the scenes it was rocky as hell. Political stuff, power struggles within the board, etc. Even that 2014-2015 "golden" season was a mess, what with the breach of the Transfer Regulations (we couldn't sign players until 2016), firing of our sporting director, firing of medical/staff members, lies about state of finances, restriction of said finances, Messi/Enrique/Chelsea conflict, etc. That 2014-2015 team winning the Treble effectively masked to posterity & the general public how fucked up the club's politics were at that time. But on the long run, that bad gestion did end up affecting that team that arguably should've gone on to win way more in 2016 - 2017, what with the bunch of talents we had in hands.
Then there was the Neymar stuff in 2017, Iniesta leaving in 2018. Of course, by then the mess that was the cub began to reflect on our style of play; by 2017/2018 already we weren't playing as good as we had. There were moments of brilliance of course, games to remember, iconic ones, but still. It was already falling, there were ovious issues, weaknesses, boring times, some alarming performances. I think that 2018-2019 UCL campaign symbolizes everything that had changed since that 2015 UCL ; we didn't have a team, we had one guy, surrounded by too unstable performances from players around. As football proves times and times again, you can have the current best player in the world, if he's alone, you'll never win shit. You'll win games, not competitions. That's the beauty of the sport, you need a team, or you'll go nowhere. Ultimately that "downfall" confirmed itself by more harsh and evident results, with the 2019-2022 period being rock bottom. Jesus Christ that period.
As for that Neymar stuff: it's so real complicated. And not as black/white as it appears. As a FCB supporter, when he left, I despised his guts for a bunch of years, genuinely. Many still do, just look at the comments under the rumors of his comeback; large portion of culers don't want him there, because we really saw it as a treason. A guy who left for money and some more fame. I guess you can say the fact that most culers still haven't swallowed that pill six years later is a testament to how much we loved him.
First, let me state that it's fucking tragic, for him as for the club. He left at his prime and, arguably, wasted it at PSG (tell anyone from 2015 that Neymar Jr doesn't have a single Ballon d'Or to his name and they'll rightfully laugh at your face) ; while Barca drowned as well, failing to find a proper replacement (FCB players were upset with the board at that failure), as you said. Had he stayed, as Pep said, and had the club managed itself better (but that in itself prompts the argument of: could they really? After all the decline started in 2014?) we could've won at least one, if not two UCLs. Honestly, now that we can take a few steps back and reflect, it seems none of the parties (except PSG, who propelled itself forward on the European scene) benefited from that move. But in truth, there can be a million reasons he left. We don't know if it was a personnal initiative or one of his family. We don't know how the Remontada and the aftermath really affected this decision. We don't know if he's the one that wanted to step out of « Messi's shadow » or if his father/agent pushed him to. We don't know if it's because Barcelona rendered public some elements of his contract, effectively breaking the trust his side had towards the club. This mess is a mix of money, ego, power, ambition, personnal relationships, psychological stuff in the brain of a 25 years old and his surroundings, Barcelona being Messi's club (whether you want it or not, it has been true since 2009. Barcelona and Messi were (still remain) synonymous, and that in itself paused a problem later on), PR/image manipulation/communication, and background stuff we'll probably never know of/or much later. The guy even pushed to comeback to Barcelona a mere year or two later. The whole Messi part is a theater play in of itself, between a starstruck kid who went on to play with his idol, who became friends and formed the most successfull Trident of the decade with him, who upon each occasion praises him and rambles about their friendship/love for each other, yet leaves. I mean, the guy reportedly told others he was leaving the club on Messi's wedding, without telling Leo - if that doesn't indicates you how fucked up/messy it was in his own head, Jesus. And yet the friendship Neymar had with other FCB players showed through the very summer he left, what with them posting a pic together following the legal actions of FCB against him. So yeah.
I think part of why he stayed at PSG after they retained him from going back to Barcelona is because he's, like every great player, a winner, he wants to get everything, he genuinely wants to give Paris what he came to do, but also cause, in the long run, he's trapped himself there. The more time passed the more it became that kind of need: he wanted/needed his move to mean something, he wanted that UCL so he could feel like he didn't waste so much time and talent and prime there. All in all, it's a bit tragic, I could ramble about it for hours but I'm gonna cut it short now cause that's not your ask lmfao.
Conclusion to the essay: Neymar's transfer to PSG didn't start anything, rather was the consequence and the accelerator of a decline that began years prior in the institution's background. Hope it helped bring some elements to the table, anon! ❤️

The first leg of the women's champions league semifinals were played today
Barcelona v Chelsea in Barcelona, Chelsea win 1-0. Chelsea were so defensively solid but also barca didn't show up they missed so many chances, they didn't get even one on target. A mess
PSG v Lyon was wild. PSG was running things and were 2-0 up then at the 80th min Lyon scored 3 times in 6 mins to remind everyone why they've won this competition 8 times.
Potm Jess carter of Chelsea absolutely deserved I think she's so underrated. She absolutely bossed the backline and kept it together.
Potm Melchie Dumournay was a great asset to get Lyon over the line with a goal and assist for the winner.
I feel like either team can win the next game the difference is only one goal in both matches so I'm excited to see what happens next week. It really could be anyone

Do you think neymessi fans have become discouraged because of their lack of content? And what do you think will happen to the fandom when Messi leaves? I might be wrong but I have the feeling that people will abandon the boat
Oh yes. I mean I’m even discouraged myself LMFAO. Not to be pessimistic, but atp I think all of us are kinda just waiting for Leo to say that he’s leaving PSG already 😭
And I honestly have no idea what will happen. I mean I think the fandom will probably fall off, but it’s not like we won’t ever get neymessi again. Like WC qualifiers are coming up for Arg v Brazil and then Copa America too 🤷‍♀️ also a lot really just depends on where Leo goes or Neymar goes. If Neymar stays at PSG and Leo goes back to Barca, there’s a chance for a UCL reunion potentially. Or if Leo went to City (idk how probable this is lol) and Chelsea actually gets Neymar, then we’d see them play against each other a few times in the prem. And ofc there’s always the off chance that they miraculously end up at the same club together again.
Also I feel like it’ll kinda be like a Copa America thing tbh? Not as extreme but more so that when they get reunited, all the prior neymessi stans re-emerge and rejoice over whatever cute moments they had for like a few days and then it’ll die off again.
Idk. I can’t speak for everyone clearly, but it’s definitely hard to be so ride or die for two ppl together when there is a lack of current content. Not saying that I’m not ride or die for them anymore btw!! It’s just that I’ve found other duos in the past who used to be PEAK, and then they weren’t anymore, and I couldn’t help but lose interest when I noticed the separation or that things just weren’t the same as they used to be. But idk this instance just feels different for me, and I think it really has to do with this blog and just having a bunch of friends to talk to ab stuff like this.
And ofc there could be new ppl who find out about them and go crazy like me and try to find every old clip of them together LMFAOOO but there will come a point when that runs out and you can only look towards the future 🤷‍♀️
And also there’s a chance that the neymessi fandom just separates into staying Neymar fans and Leo fans bc they’re not together anymore but still love them separately.
I’m dreading the day this comes, but it’s inevitable so… I guess we’ll see!!
——
But also (sorry just thought of this lol) I think a lot of neymessi fans are discouraged bc they had (including myself) a different expectation for how the season would go for them. A lot of new neymessi stans emerged after the WC. They see how well Leo plays and Neymar (and ofc Kylian becomes super highly well known too). So you can’t help but think:
oh my god! These 3 amazing players are all on the same team together? Surely this team is amazing!
Only to come back from the WC, and see how PSG declined from being undefeated at the beginning of the season, to just losing repeatedly or barely scrapping a win (and still playing horribly)
It also doesn’t help that new neymessi stans went through old content. Saw their interactions from barca, Copa america, and psg and saw how linked they were. I was literally SO excited for what I thought would be at least one hug every game with the two of them. But that didn’t happen. Half of the games they didn’t play together due to injuries, and if they didn’t play together, they either lost or if they scored didnt have as huge of a celebration as was expected (either just bc or due to VAR).
And this is not to sound ungrateful at all, because I am so happy I got to see neymessi play together in real time, but it just didn’t play out as I expected it to (and I know other people agree with me). Ofc I went in with naive expectations bc I literally knew nothing ab the sport at all, and didn’t realize how unfortunate things like injuries can be for a player during a season.
So anyways that’s my spiel. If anyone read it I appreciate it. And again this is not to be ungrateful WHATSOEVER. I love neymessi so much, and I just wish the second half of the season treated them better and how they deserved.

ive seen so many ppl on twt being like "m*dryk didnt create any chances all because cucurella didnt pass the ball to him" and its starting to sound a lot like "hakim's psg loan failed bcs psg left everything till last day".. basically chelsea fans grasping at straws to justify the mistakes their club chéri makes
He didn’t create any chances because he played horrible!!! Last game they were blaming Mount for his terrible performance now it’s cucurella, who’s next? The’ll defend the guy forever, I see how vocal some users are on tumblr too about him. They excused him his is*ael post cause he’s “hot” so who cares. Yeah this always leads to toxicity and club failure, chels-a fans should know better. Meanwhile Hakim who is loved by everyone and N E V E R had an issue, always professional etc gets to be called unbothered, lazy and they expected him to bring toxicity because of the transfer fail. BUT no this is not toxic lol. Their mentality fr.

"is ilestedt even a good player? & should chelsea forwards he worried about her"
Why are Swewnt players constantly questioned and underrated like this just because some of them don't have a big brand, aren't considered stars and aren't as well known as Frido or Kosse? 😡
Sweden by tradition produce well football educated players on the women's side. Coaches in the women's top tier are required by the federation to have the highest coaching license which is Uefa Pro above the A and B. In men's football a B license is required to be a head coach for amateur teams, youth football teams up to age 16 and assistant coach. The A license is required for head coaches of men's professional teams. Uefa Pro is required to be a head coach for national teams and enables coaches to work in any league around the world. Watch this on coaching licenses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNsWmVXZg88
The least well known domestic players who aren't national team players, are already better than the average player before they take the step abroad and take further steps in their player development. In Ilestedt's case she's played in Fcr under Jonas, Potsdam, Bayern and Psg. In Swewnt she's played as a RCB, RB or a RWB even a CB at times in a back 3. Bayern sometimes put her to the left also. She's as tall as Z, will have absolutely no problem with the physical duels in WSL, she has pace in defense and attack plus has a mean long range shot and killer headers. She's certainly better than any of Arsenal's starting defenders of last season without naming players.
When Swewnt were asked which player was toughest to meet in training they said Ilestedt and Magda. Even gave Magda a good run for the money who hated most to lose in the squad. It's not good news for Chelsea that Arsenal signed her.
Yea it's a really smart signing from arsenal

Tumblr media
