Do you ever spend hours at a time not knowing what to wear? Find that all your money is slipping because you’re spending so much money on clothes? Welcome to fast fashion, the world’s most unsustainable trend in modern day society that still runs rampant!

If you look at what your hoodie or shirt is made of, it’s probably cotton and polyester. These two materials are mainly used in fast fashion because they are very convenient and cheap. Unfortunately, they are also poor quality (Edward, 2016). I’ll be writing down some information on both fabrics, starting with polyester!

Polyester is the most widely manufactured fibre. It’s made from petroleum, which is known to be energy-intensive because as a synthetic petroleum-based fibre, it’s made from a carbon-intensive non-renewable resource (Edwards, 2016). Manufacturing petroleum requires large amounts of crude oil and releases carbon emission (Claudio, 2007). One kilogram of polyester may use up to 125 MJ of energy to produce (Muthu, 2014).

Alongside environmental impacts, polyester affects our health. Volatile organic compounds, acetaldehyde, and dioxins are emitted during production, which poses a threat to human health and the ozone layer (Muthu, 2014). These emissions can cause or worsen any pre-existing respiratory disease.

It’s basic knowledge that polyester fabrics need harmful chemicals. What you don’t know is that they contain carcinogens. If you look at where your clothing comes from, it’s likely countries like China, Indonesia, and Bangladesh where the environmental regulations are less strict. When the chemicals are emitted into the water and the air, it will cause significant environmental damage if untreated (Edwards, 2016). Communities nearby manufacturing plants will face serious health threats that I have already mentioned.

On a small positive note, polyester does not have as high levels of water-intensity compared to natural fibres. Unfortunately, polyester cannot be dyed with low impact or natural dyes (Edwards, 2016). Once polyester fabrics pass production, they don’t stop with their negative impacts. Polyesters are likely the biggest source of microplastic pollution with up to 1900 fibres washed off for a single piece of clothing. This is not for the entire lifetime of the garment- it’s just for one wash! (O’Connor, 2014) When you throw out your clothing, it isn’t biodegradable and stays in the ecosystem for a while until it breaks apart (Edward, 2016).

On a positive note, polyester can be completely recyclable, which opens up the possibility of manufacturing clothes from recycled plastics (Edwards, 2016). Some examples are Repreve and Eco Intelligent Polyester, which are eco-friendly but hard to find in stores and expensive.

Nonetheless, there are always actions we can take. First, start minimizing the amount of polyester clothing you buy. It’s almost impossible to eliminate polyester nowadays, but do try your best to reserve polyester for specialized garments (like rainwear!). If possible, do try to recycle your clothing too.
