“You can see strings.”
Tim stares at them, brown eyes owlbear-wide and words intoned with accusation and fascination alike. If nothing else, he’s at least waited until Martin was out of earshot, though he had to find some nook in the stacks to shove Jon into to do so. For that, at least, Jon gives him credit. They surely would have passed away otherwise, flagged down some fire giant or phoenix to please, please turn them into a pile of ash and put them out of their misery. The smell of soot would be preferable to the present moment, which is permeated with the stale scent of old books and their own mortification.
Jon would love nothing more than to go back in time and not warn Tim he was about to trip over threads no one else could see — he’s been able to do this for years, he should know better to spot the subtle difference in perceived depth. But he’s no mage, not really, and so the best he can do is glare up at him, moving his pointed finger off his chest, and spit, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Jon.” Tim crowds in a little closer, the brim of his hat blocking the light. His eyes light up like scrying crystals. “You have magic, boss. Real magic! Like, dragon-whispering, light-conjuring, glittery unicorn snot magic.”
“I have the ability to see a world that looks like it’s been taken over by dire tarantulas.”
“And that’s really cool!” Tim says, throwing out his arms in emphasis. At Jon’s grimace, he amends, “It is to me, at least. And don’t try to pull the ‘boo hoo, I don’t believe in magic, I hate fun’ sceptic bit on me again, you’re cuter when you’re not lying to yourself. And to me, of course.” He claps a hand on Jon’s shoulder. “So, which poor sod’s strings was I about to trample on? I wouldn’t want to rip out anyone’s heart trying to get to lunch.”
Lowering the brim of their hat to maybe, just maybe hide their burning blush and stammering lack of words, Jon mutters, “Um. It was actually… erm. Good lord, this is embarrassing…”
“I mean, I was only joking, heh, it’s not actually my business, boss—”
“No, no, I’ve never — uh, I’ve just never really discussed it with anyone. It was… yours. A-And Martin’s. I know you two have, er, fancied each other awhile—”
“He likes me back?”
Jon blinks. Going by all the touchy-feely flirting they’ve been doing for months now — holding hands in the stacks, talking movies and pets over lunch, rescuing that nest of cinnamon birds in the atrium — he was frankly convinced they were living together. “Yes? I… thought you knew?”
“Jon. Boss. Just because you can see that with your fancy spook-o-vision doesn’t mean we all can.”
“My sincerest apologies that you can’t see what’s right in front of your eyes,” they snark. Jon’s already had this sort of conversation with Martin, excluding mention of their… unique ability, of course. He’s more Tim’s friend than Jon’s, they think, but they’ve nonetheless listened to his anxious rambling and, in hindsight, perhaps inadvertently played a wingman sort of role. The two evidently like each other. Jon’s hardly forcing or creating anything that isn’t already very much there. Their chemistry is thick and tangible whenever they’re in a room together — it’s already cavity inducing. They’re becoming a risk for attracting pixies.
Tim gets a mischievous gleam in his eye, smirking in that way reserved usually for Martin, or for any patron at the front desk he’s trying to please, and Jon’s heart swoops even as it sinks, like a piece of parchment fluttering whilst it falls to the floor. “Well, I guess you’ll have to see it for us.”
“…I beg your pardon?”
“Y’know. With your spook-o-vision.”
“Do not call it that.”
Hello!! This is my valentine gift for @gayformlessblob for the @seasons-in-the-archives Valentine’s event, featuring a martim/jonmartim focused fantasy/soulmate AU!
Marked by a childhood incident, Jon can see the thin strings woven between his fellow researcher Tim and the librarian Martin as the two grow closer, but he tries to keep this ability under wraps to focus on his work at the Magnus Institute, one of the largest repositories of magical artifacts and writing in the land — after all, he’s never seen any strings tied to himself. As his secret comes out, however, and he works in cahoots with both Tim and Martin to help their developing relationship, he winds up a bit more tied up with the two than he intended :)c I hope you like it!!

Hey Aim! 😊 I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed the hell out of Haiku and I honestly let out a little squeak of joy when I saw it and read it. Great work as always. I also wanted to ask you what’s one pairing you want to explore next year, which work of yours have you reread the most, and which was your favorite pairing (or y'nno, top six to nine) that you wrote for this year for Ao3 wrapped? Hope you're having a great day! 😚
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. ^_^ I've never done a Reverse Big Bang before, so it was a different sort of prompt than I normally use and it was a fun new exploration!
19. What’s one pairing you want to explore next year?
Ooh. This is tough, because I honestly write pretty much whatever tickles my fancy without regard for whether other people will read it anyway, LOL. I'm excited to post more Stucky longfic (YEAR OF FINISHING WILL CONTINUE INTO 2023) and to finish and post the Steve/Joyce. I do really want to try writing Eddie Munson/Wednesday Addams, if I can brain up a plot for it. Right now the idea is just Good Vibes. I'm excited about a lot of the Femslash February pairings that I'm planning on for 2023, as well. But there isn't anything that necessarily sticks out to me like, "oh I wish that I felt like I could write X but I can't," because I just... do the thing, usually.
20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?
Of all time? I think Cinnafic, probably -- it's the oldest thing I have posted that I'm still actually quite proud of at least most of, and I just reread it this year so it's in my head. I think the District 4 story in that series in particular is what I've reread the most of my own stuff. If I do say so myself, the Vibes in that story are Immaculate.
Of things I've written THIS YEAR, Five Times Captain America Fucked A USO Girl & One Time Steve Rogers Got Fucked. I was in a writing fugue state while writing it so I didn't hyper-edit myself the whole time and make myself sick of it while writing, for a change. LOL
9. Favorite pairing you wrote for this year?
Oh man. I'm so bad at ranking pairings. I mean, I feel like I'd have to call myself a liar if I acted like anything other than Steve/Bucky were my OTP of the moment, but it's honestly kind of rare that I have a true One Pairing That I Like Best because I'm such a multishipper. I love writing Kate/Yelena. I love writing Gomez/Morticia, and I'm excited to write more Wednesday/Enid. I love writing just about any woman character/Velma Dinkley, hahaha. Dang who all did I even write for this year? I love Chrissy/Eddie :(((((((( my sweet doomed bbs. The pairings that I wrote the most this year are, in order, according to AO3:
Yelena/Kate
Steve/Bucky
Phryne/Jack
Booker/Nile
Joe/Nicky
Darcy/Wanda
Eddie/Chrissy
Katniss/Peeta
Gomez/Morticia
Andy/Quynh
But like, the pairing I wrote the most this year is still only 79/968 fics that I posted this year, so I've written A FUCKTON OF PAIRINGS.

[ID: Jon and Martin are together outside the safehouse. Jon sits on the left in a chair on the side of the house, with a window behind him. He has stubbly facial hair, numerous scars, long, thick curly hair tied at the bottom, and angular glasses. He wears a wide-brim sun hat with flowers tucked in the ribbon, gardening gloves, a jumper, and a maxi skirt. They look happily at their flowering vine plant, surrounded by numerous other flowers and shrubs. They have one hand in their lap, and the other holds an elephant-shaped watering can. Martin is on the right, walking along the front of the house to get to Jon. He’s a man with short curly hair, slight stubble, freckles, and round glasses, wearing a turtleneck, patched trousers, and rubber-toed shoes. He walks past the wooden front door carrying two cups of tea, but is surprised and distracted by a large bee flying in a heart-shaped pattern. Centred on top reads the title, “and blooming would be my delight,” with the hanging loops of certain letters curling like vines. The piece is monochrome with a paper and ink texture, except for some plants and other objects coloured yellow and/or green. In the corners are yellow flowers with green leaves. End description.]
Summary:
Jon looks up, meets his eyes and tries for a soft smile. “I can’t wait to see what you bring home.”
“I guess it’ll be a surprise, then,” Martin laughs, squeezing Jon’s hand before letting go. He mirrors Jon’s smile. “They’ve got those little packets of seeds down in the village. I’ll, uh, see what speaks to me.”
“And here I thought we were free of terrors. Talking plants, oh my—”
“You know what I meant!” Martin lightly swings the dishcloth in Jon’s direction, brushing against his cheek with a fwap.
“I do, I do. If some conversational rosemary is the most we have to worry about anymore, I’d call that a victory.”
Jon’s never been much good with plants. Or people. Or himself. He’s no gardener, and he knows it. But in spite of it all, an idea takes root, and Jon finds the strength to nurture new growth. All it takes is some time, some sunshine, and some love.
Or, Jon, plants, and trying again.
In honour of the @seasons-in-the-archives spring event, I give you: my second ever fic, a rather self indulgent oneshot exploring Jon’s life and character growth through the lens of his relationship with plants! Working on this has been an absolute blast. Make sure to check the tags and warnings before reading, and check out all the cool art and writing that’s also been made for this event!

The cat mmrps in their lap and butts their head against their hand. “Yes, yes, I’m petting you, don’t worry,” they say, resuming what must be their earlier petting. They look back up at Martin, and gesture halfheartedly towards their stack of books. “I, er. Had a bit of trouble, deciding.”
Martin chuckles. “So you got the cat to help you choose?”
“Well, the cat has a name,” Jon informs him in their most esteemed professional voice, “and a very fine one at that. Pangur Bán is the official defender of this bookshop, and he is very good at his job.”
That... sure is a name. “Uh. Pardon?”
“Pangur Bán - you know, the, er, ninth-century Irish abbot’s cat?” Jon asks him this, innocently, as if this is a question to which Martin should reasonably answer yes.
woke up and realized today is Jon Sims and Cats Day, so I figured I’d illustrate one of my favourite scenes from my fic one foot in sea, one on shore! it is. so late at night where I am oops
[ID: a picture of Jonathan Sims from The Magnus Archives petting a cat in front of a window in a secondhand bookstore. Jon is a thin brown person with long, dark hair, angular glasses, and slight freckles, wearing a dark sage cardigan and dark trousers. Sat in their lap is a fluffy cat so dark black its only discernible features are its big, round yellow eyes with wide pupils, staring directly at the viewer. Jon also looks at the viewer with a softly surprised expression, one leg perched on the seat and the other hanging down towards the floor. On one side sits a stack of books, and on the other rests their cane. Behind him through translucent glass is a small-town street punctuated with leafy green trees, where the bright sunlight shines across their shoulders. Framing them on each side of the image are bookshelves, and dust motes float through the air. End description.]

Fanfic Overview Review
Tagged by @rhubarbdreams :)

How many works do you have on AO3?
...1875
What’s your total AO3 word count?
2,772,621
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
HAHAHAHAHA. To find out the number, I copypasta’d into an Excel spreadsheet... 241 fandoms. The top ten by number of fics are: 1. Star Wars - All Media Types (417) 2. Marvel Cinematic Universe (317) 3. The Old Guard (Movie 2020) (215) 4. Star Wars Sequel Trilogy (197) 5. Star Wars Original Trilogy (152) 6. Captain America (Movies) (142) 7. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (98) 8. Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins (85) 9. The Avengers (Marvel Movies) (77) 10. One Direction (Band) (77)
Are there any new fandoms you want to write for?
I mean, I pretty much get to/do write for All The Fandoms. Once I like a thing, I put it on the ship list or start posting about it, and people are kind and request it! I guess the only fandom that I would like to write that no one’s requested (or will request) is Purple Moon, but I’m one of like four people MAX who remembers that fandom existed, so.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. How Rue Became the Mockingjay (Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins) - Kudos: 4,302
2. Landslide (One Direction (Band)) - Kudos: 2,559
3. May You Enjoy Your New Life (One Direction (Band)) - Kudos: 1,988
4. Twenty-Four Victors, Twenty-Four Tributes: Meet Your Quarter Quell Contestants (Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins) - Kudos: 1,179
5. I Built A Home for You, for Me (One Direction (Band), Radio 1 RPF) - Kudos: 857
Which of your fics do you want more attention for?
Two series, actually: Five Places Cinna Came From and Since Feeling Is First. I’m still proud of the Cinnafics 10 years/11 years later, which is RARE for me vis-a-vis my writing, and I’m proud that I actually finished the gotdang thing. And I loved writing SFIF with @nichestars and I think the fics all turned out really lovely.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes. I just answered an Ask about this recently! :)
What sorts of things do you normally write?
Character studies! I don’t think I’ve ever really written anything else.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Capitol Pastries, for sure.
What’s a fic that pushed you out of your comfort zone?
Everything I write that’s longer than a drabble does, in some way, push me out of my comfort zone, but I think Genesis has been the work that I’ve had the most emotional ~turmoil about writing.
Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Yes! I love a good crossover. Probably objectively the silliest/craziest has been the Continuing Adventures of Cap & Molly (copyright @therebeccaw) but I also think the Princess Diaries/His Dark Materials daemon!fusion fic was very silly (on purpose).
Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. :\ I’ve had people ask but they always want to put it on a different platform, and I don’t want my stuff on Wattpad or sites with paid memberships because... yuck.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! A lot! Most of my finished longfic is co-written because I Am Not A Finisher but I WILL LEARN TO BE.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
LOOK, I KNOW I LEFT GENESIS WITH LITERALLY ONE CHAPTER LEFT EIGHT YEARS AGO, I --
What are you currently working on?
Lent From Tomorrow (Today Was Too Small For Us), a shrinkyclinks A/B/O set in the codebreaking, espionage world of WWII.
What are your writing strengths?
Food imagery and attributing colors to emotions. And worldbuilding, I think, if I toot my own horn.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Plot pacing and conflict. I never want to write conflict. I will go 10 miles out of the way to avoid writing meaningful conflict.
What was the first fandom you wrote for? Most recent?
Technically? Under the Umbrella Tree. On the internet in a fanfiction space? Dream Street. My most recent fandom is “whatever people are requesting at the moment” but practically speaking, the MCU.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
I will always have a real soft spot for Never Never Never Stop for Anyone (Sheylinsonverse) because it was my all-time most productive writing experience and I just had a lot of fun with it, but I honestly think Lent From Tomorrow is/will be FAR AND AWAY the best thing I’ve ever written, including shit for my MFA.
What fic are you most proud of?
Probably Cinnafic, 24V24T, or Ruefic. Or, again, Lent From Tomorrow, which I WILL FINISH BECAUSE I’M GOING TO BE A FINISHER.
