Hi!

Here are the bingo cards for CMBYN Bingo 2023!

There are three different bingo cards this year. They are all similar, but they all have nine different prompts on them. The goal is to write a drabble/fic/poem etc. or create a work of art, based on these prompts.

You can pick one of the cards to write for and try and get a full line or a full card. But of course the main goal is to just have fun with it, so if you want to do a line from one card and then a line from another card, that is absolutely fine too. Or if you want to do random prompts from the bingo cards and not go for a line or full card, that is fine too! You do whatever works for you!

What’s different this year is that you are free to combine prompts. Want to complete a full line by using three prompts in your work? Want to use several prompts from different cards in your work? Want to try and complete a full card by using all prompts in one work? Go for it! 😁

looking for a beta.

i'm participating in the 'unconventional courtship' fic challenge over at dreamwidth and have written a ~3500 word long fic for the call me by your name fandom based on a harlequin/romance novel summary. only problem is, i could really use a beta reader for this one, since i feel something is off about it - and preferably, i would like it to be someone who is canon familiar (has read both books).

the pairing in the fic is michel/elio in a what if-elio had met michel in a different context and they ended up together-kinda way. it's pretty much gen, nothing explicit about it, just two people having a conversation at a piano, basically. lots of canon references, lots of flashbacks to oliver, etc.

ik there's the contentious topic about categorizing things as bl and making the distinction between bl and queer media, and i do think there have been valid points in the discourse about how bl is changing and its going through a sort of r/evolution now that bl is getting pretty big (and i'm talking exclusively about asian bl here btw, so in this context it would be the globalization of asian bls). but i also think that it's important to not disregard history and bl's roots.

bl was created by women for women in the 1970s in japan. although from a feminist perspective, bl challenges gender and sexual norms, bring capitalism into the equation, and we're getting the fetishization of gay relationships for (predominantly) straight female consumption.

idt it's a "right or wrong" situation. i believe two truths can exist: bl is a capitalist venture that oftentimes perpetuates harmful stereotypes, but bl can also be liberation for a lot of people. especially asian bl—as a bisexual woc, seeing nonwhite queer media is so so important to me. and i am not asian, but i know it's especially been revolutionary for my fellow queer asian brothers, sisters, & enby siblings.

i read somewhere that the directors instructed juntaek to not watch (korean) bl when studying for his role in the eighth sense. i found this reeeeally interesting, since i've also seen people mention that the eighth sense is not a bl, but queer media. i also think it's important to point out that one of the directors/writers is a white european man, and i'm pretty sure he was the one who told juntaek to watch things like skam or call me by your name instead of kbls—i haven't seen skam but cmbyn is white queer cinema (also problematic, but i digress). in the past, there was also that british bl heartstopper (sorry besties i still haven't seen it i probably should), in which the author expressed that they did not want to label it as bl, but there was backlash as, at least the show, clearly drew inspiration from asian bl.

as a historically asian genre, how does this distinction (bl vs. queer) perpetuate the western hegemony of queer thought? usually when people make this distinction, i don't think they take into account that race plays as much as a part as queerness (intersectionality is so important). but on the other hand, i also understand that bl has clear tropes and narrative structures that make it a bl. we wouldn't call moonlight a bl, or the handmaiden a gl. but also, films are a different medium with less restrictions (if you've seen a korean film vs. a kdrama, you get me lol).

i definitely don't have an answer or anything. the eighth sense is filmed through such a queer lens and it touches on the nuances of the queer experiences in a way i haven't really seen in bl, but i still i find myself wary of proclaiming that it's not bl, ja feel? is the eighth sense (along with bls such as bad buddy, old fashion cupcake, to my star, etc.) a marker of the r/evolution of bl? i guess i just wanted to open up the conversation to hear people's thoughts, especially from my fellow queer pocs.

at the end of the day we're all here to be entertained, but i'm glad to see discourse and think it's fruitful in the long process of decolonizing our mindsets.

Yes, I'm from Latin America, and Challengers hasn't had much promotion, so theaters give priority to "big" movies, unfortunately.

I think ppl tend to forget that Luca is predominantly a very indie film type of director, so MOST of his work is small, and not usually a "big film".... i.e. "Call Me By Your Name", "The Staggering Girl", "Bones and All", etc.

CMBYN had a budget of about 3.5 million....

"Bones and All" had a budget of about 16-20 million.....

Meanwhile, "Challengers" has a budget of around 50-55 million.... So, this might be the "biggest" film Luca has made so far lol 😆

during an interview for newscast (just now on air) luca said that timothée is a man of deep intelligence, who always challenges him to do uncomfortable things and timmy says that luca accompanied him like a father in cmbyn and it was an honor to work with him again ❤️

Im seeing challengers next week I’ve been anticipating this movie forever but so far it’s not looking like what I expected. The posters r horrid, I hate zendayas bob and im not sensing a vibe from her, the trailers also weird, the guys are SOOO busted looking. It doesn’t look bad per se but I’m intrigued in a different way, like I think I’m going to witness something weird. Cmbyn was unsalvageable bc armie hammer is repulsive but I really liked we are who we are so Luca guadagnino is 1 for 2 right now, but I really want to like this movie

so "bones and all" completely flopped but timmy's a draw????? maybe he's gonna be more of a draw now after dune 2 and wonka.

luca meanwhile saw how big "call me by your name" had become on tumblr and social media overall and realized he had found his audience and hasn't looked back since then, trying to appeal to that demo with each of his new releases and without much success (except on the internet), but "challengers" imo has that wattpad-esque type of storyline that could play well with zoomer and even millennial female audiences. and the same tone, like it purports to be steamy but is still completely sanitized. and it has some yaoi (he finally realized that's why cmbyn was so big and not because of timmy)? dude is literally scanning social media looking for things his target demo enjoys, i'm crying. he's hustling so bad.

Could Armie Hammer may have developed feelings for fellow actor Eric Dane? Both of them have similar backgrounds related to substance abuse issues and complicates divorces, and when Armie was in LA the seem to have spent a lot of time together. Honestly I think Eric would be a nice change of pace for Armie and a breath of fresh air after having to battle with his cmbyn costar and said costar's greed problems.

I recieved the death card and the five of wands.

The Five of Wands is the ‘Hunger Games‘ of Tarot. If this Minor Arcana card appears in your reading, prepare for some stiff competition.

The five of wands can indicate a yes, but it’s a card of battle. And in this particular question I get a sense that these two men are friends but also competitors. Maybe more competitors than friends. But somehow the challenges they both face have brought them together. There’s a lot of rivalry here.

Death in this case does not mean literal death, but new beginnings. Transformtaion. It may be telling you that you need to draw a line under the past in order to move forward in a positive direction.

These two started off as competitors in some sort of way. I’m not sure how. Maybe they auditioned for the same roles, fell in love with the same person? I’m not sure. But as to develope feelings, yes, they started off as rivals and through common issues and similar backgrounds, they have developed a deep relationship as friends. This is a non romantic relationship.

I watched Call Me by your Name because a moot recently recommended it to me. It's been on my to-watch list for years, so I figured why not. I'm emotionally devastated now.

This story is so Lucemond coded.

Modern Summerhall AU inspired by CMBYN where:

Luke and Aemond's families both stay at their villa in Summerhall for the summer. Their families are forced to get along for the next twelve weeks because of Viserys for what might be their last vacation together.

Luke is in his late teens/early twenties and almost finished with uni. He's accomplished on the piano and violin. Aemond is pursuing a doctorate in archaeology with an avenue to becoming a professor someday.

Aemond cozies up to Viserys doing research together, mainly to make the old man happy, but because he's an authority in the field and it could open up a lot of doors for Aemond in the future.

Luke knows what Aemond is doing, so he inserts himself in his grandfather's study with them whenever they're together, wearing short shorts and sucking on lollipops. He'll chime in to correct/challenge Aemond whenever he can.

Aemond pulls up the slide on their projector.

Aemond: Here we have a Pentoshi sculpture in Essos from the Classical period. Delicately proportional and posed. You can tell from the-

Luke: You're mistaken, uncle. It's from the Vellenistic period. The sculptures were much more expressive and sensual. Look at the way the fabric clings to her body.

Viserys is only happy that his son and grandson are getting along, too blind to see the antagonism between the two.

They're forced to spend their days together playing competitive games (family against family). From chess to blasting music through their walls, they find every way to annoy one another in the coming weeks.

Luke spends his days transcribing music, reading books, and swimming in their pool while Aemond works on his research paper on the lawn.

Aemond cannot help himself from looking over to Luke as waterdrops spill from the boy's chest, drying himself on the sun soaked edge of the pool as he's engaged with a poetry book.

Rhaenyra brings a plate of honey cakes for them to share and Aemond cannot help but be mesmerized by the way Luke's mouth nibbles on one slice idly. His nephew's attention is so focused on the book so he doesn't notice Aemond staring. The boy's fingers are sticky with honey so Luke licks each one slowly, tongue lolling on each digit.

They ride their bikes together in the Summerhall countryside. Exploring secluded areas like spring-fed ponds and meadows far away from anyone else.

Slowly, Luke begins to realize that as he spends more time with his uncle, he enjoys his company and begins to miss him whenever they're apart.

Meanwhile, Aemond starts going out until late hours to avoid his growing lust for the boy. He finds himself increasingly intrigued by Luke from his sharp tongue to his forlorn, contemplative compositions on the piano.

I’ve seen a handful of reviewers say Zendaya is Oscar worthy in Dune 2. Just wow, I can’t wait to see it opening weekend. I am a long time fan of the Oscars, I have followed it since I was a kid. So excited for her! Of course awards are not everything and it doesn’t take away from her performance if she doesn’t get one, but I love that she’s being praised.

I’ve seen a handful of reviewers say Zendaya is Oscar worthy in Dune 2. Just wow, I can’t wait to see it opening weekend.
