Roster thots:
Where the FUCK is Andi Sullivan. She played every minute of the World Cup and deserves to be on this roster.
I don’t get the Sam Coffey hype as much so if it’s her or Sully, I vote Sully.
Also missing Hatchy and Sanchez and Aubs. Vlatko absolutely screwed Hatchy and Sanchez and it pisses me off. I’m hoping Sanchez gets to shine in NC and prove herself. Aubs, idk why she’s not on there.
Excited to see some of the young kids!! Jenna, Olivia, Korbin, Mia, Jaedyn. I doubt all of them will make the Olympics roster, but CONCACAF is a great first tournament for them to try and spread their wings and test them.
I understand not having Kelley and Alex there. Kelley’s been injured, Alex hasn’t been performing to form on the national team as much. I worry if they’ll be in the Olympic roster but haven’t been included in the team in the lead up.
Ultimately: this isn’t a tournament for us to qualify for the Olympics, so we can try out some new formations and players. Some omissions I absolutely disagree with, but overall great roster.

U.S. Women’s Soccer Stars Max Mayfield and El Hopper Find Love Off The Field
Washington D.C. When the US Women’s Soccer Team won against Canada in the final round of the CONCACAF W Championship, it felt almost routine. They had been dominating their competition the whole tournament after all. But for two members of the team, it would change their lives forever. When the final whistle blew and the team was celebrating their victory, cameras caught teammates Max Mayfield and El Hopper sharing a tender kiss on the field for the whole stadium– and the world– to see. A few hours later, it was confirmed in Out Magazine that they are in a relationship with an exclusive interview, marking the first time the two of them have ever discussed their sexual identities in the media.
Jane “El” Hopper, known for her impressive strikes as a forward, and Max Mayfield, a talented midfielder with quick passes, have been teammates for several years. But their connection goes beyond just playing on the same team; they have been friends since they were children before being scouted by the USWNT while in college. Soon after, the team started gaining prominence both nationally and internationally, all the while a romance was brewing between the two players.
As for why they chose to share their story with the world now, Mayfield says that it was planned weeks in advance, “We were ready for the world to know. We’ve been together for years now, there was no reason to hide. The interview was coming out whether we won or not, so I’m happy that it was prefaced with a victory.”
The announcement was met with outpouring support from their teammates, fans and the broader soccer community. It has also sparked a new conversation about LGBTQ athletes as well as same-sex relationships in the sports world. Experts have noted that this marks a significant step forward for LGBTQ representation in professional sports, especially within the traditionally male dominated world of soccer. While there is still historical stigma and fear of discrimination that makes it challenging for professional athletes to come out, Hopper and Mayfield’s story has been considered by many as courageous and inspiring.
Going forward, Hopper and Mayfield hope that their story can help others embrace their true selves and make sports more inclusive for everyone. Hopper remarks, “It’s time for LGBTQ+ athletes to feel supported and empowered in their teams and communities.” Their impact has been tremendous already, with many people expressing their resonance with the players. One parent of a teen soccer player is grateful that his lesbian daughter has role models like Hopper and Mayfield to look up to.
As the sports world takes steps towards greater inclusivity, Max Mayfield and El Hopper’s decision to share their relationship will stand as a pivotal moment in the ongoing effort to break down barriers and create a more accepting environment for LGBTQ+ athletes in all disciplines.
The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team has qualified for next year’s Summer Olympics after their win against Canada. And later this year, Hopper and Mayfield will be competing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup alongside their teammates.

I don't really understand the Olympics qualification....does Spain make it automatically for winning the WC? And what are the chances of the US making it, like 100% or is there a chance they wouldn't?
Olympic qualifying is determined by mini tournaments within the different continental confederations. 11 countries can qualify, the host nation (France) is qualified automatically to make 12 teams in total.
The US already qualified last year by winning the Concacaf championship.
Spain will have to do really well in the nations league (sept 23 - feb 24). They will have to make the final of the nations league finals to qualify unless France makes the final in which case a 3rd place in the nations league finals would also be enough. Only the winners of their group (during the group stage) go through to the nations league finals.
Spain is in a group with Sweden, Italy and Switserland so it will be a tough one but certainly not impossible. If they win the group stage they will have to beat at least one really tough European country to make the final or win the 3rd place match (if France makes the final).

United States: 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup Champions
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SAN DIEGO (March 10, 2024) – The U.S. Women’s National Team won the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup with a 1-0 win against Brazil in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 31,528 fans on a beautiful night in San Diego. A goal from team captain Lindsey Horan in the dying moments of the first half was enough to clinch the victory and for the U.S. to claim its 15th all-time title at a Concacaf championship tournament.
The crowd was the largest ever for a Concacaf women’s event hosted in the United States. The USA finished the tournament with 15 goals as forward Jadeyn Shaw scored four times in the tournament while Horan had three.
Shaw earned the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher earned the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper. Naeher earned four shutouts in her five starts and etched her place in USWNT history with a stellar three-save performance in the penalty shootout against Canada in the semifinal. The USA also earned the tournament’s Fair Play award.
The first half was a tight and physical contest, but the USA did well to stay organized on defense despite some heavy challenges as the teams combined for 12 fouls before the break. The Americans came close to opening the scoring on a few occasions while also doing well to create opportunities on counter attacks. The USA finally created a goal in first half stoppage time when Horan finished off a long cross from Fox that came deep from the right flank. Horan rose above her defender and sent a perfect header across the frame into the right corner, marking her third goal of the tournament and her first from open play after previously burying two from the penalty spot.
Inspired by the late goal, the USA came out strong in the second half, connecting well with quick passes and threatening Brazil down the wings with speed. On the defensive end, the U.S. put on a masterclass – led by center backs Naomi Girma and Tierna Davidson, neither of whom put a foot wrong all night – to deny Brazil any shots on goal despite the South Americans taking 11 total shots, while Crystal Dunn and Emily Fox did well to limit any forwards getting behind them on the flanks.
The Americans nearly doubled their lead in the 79th minute after winning a ball from Brazil in the defensive third which led to Lynn Williams getting in behind the defense. The halftime sub beat the goalkeeper with good finish, but her goal was correctly waved off for offside.
Brazil fought until the end and strung together a few dangerous chances toward the final moments, especially on set plays, but the USA held strong – including a goal line clearance from defender Casey Krueger – to earn the victory.
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN: USA – Lindsey Horan (Emily Fox), 45+1 minute: Trinity Rodman received the ball on the right wing and dribbled all the way to the end line, inviting pressure from two defenders before finding Fox open behind her. Fox sent a cross toward the far post where Horan rose to finish with a header into the right side netting from six yards out. USA 1, BRA 0
ADDITIONAL NOTES: Emily Fox’s assist to set up Horan’s goal was her first of 2024 and third in her career. Horan's four goal contributions (3 goals, 1 assist) tied with Jaedyn Shaw (4 goals) for the most on the team this tournament. Horan has now been directly involved in a goal in 4 of her 5 appearances for the USA in competitive finals. She scored in the final of 2016 Olympic qualifying vs. Canada, had an assist in the final of 2018 World Cup Qualifying vs CAN, scored in the final of 2020 Olympic Qualifying vs. Canada and now scored in the Concacaf W Gold Cup Final. At 20 years and 149 days of age, Korbin Albert became the youngest player to start a competitive final for the USA since Mallory Swanson (formerly Pugh) started the final of Olympic qualifying in 2016 at age 17. The match was the fourth matchup between the USWNT and Brazil in a final, with the USA winning each of them by a one goal margin. The USA and Brazil have played 39 times total with the U.S. leading the overall series 32W-5D-3L. The USA has won each of its last six games against Brazil, though nine of the last 10 games between the teams have been decided by two goals or fewer. Jaedyn Shaw has now won the Golden Ball in both Concacaf tournaments in which she has participated. She previously earned the honor at the U-15 level in 2018.

questions, is this gold cup just a tournament with no purpose aside from winning a medal or is it a qualifying tournament like winning it would qualify the team for the world cup or olympics?
It's just a regional tournament for 2 year bragging rights of CONCACAF. The men have been doing it for years. Finally gave the women one.

Before there was the Gold Cup, CONCACAF would have their Olympics qualifiers around this time and outside of the FIFA window since the tournament was like 2-3 weeks long, so international games at this time is nothing new. The USWNT didn’t invent the tournament and put it in the end of February to inconvenience everyone
*US participates in a tournament*

Yo, Alex Morgan is not having a great year and it’s legit to say she shouldn’t be starting and ask if her time with the national team is done. But in 2022 she won the golden boot for both the league and at the Concacaf qualifiers that got us into the World Cup and the Olympics. So let’s not blame the pregnancy or post-pregnancy leniency. She earned it with her play last year, she’s not earning it this year. Simple as that.

Don't really care who played or how we got the goal. We are Concacaf Champions and qualified for the Olympics and World Cup.That's all that matters. LFG USA🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

UEFA teams don't play separate Olympic qualifiers though, the World Cup is their Olympic qualifier. UEFA teams do have to play in qualifiers for the Euros though, while the US and Canada don't have to play in qualifiers for their CONCACAF tournament.
yes, this is what I meant. the gist of it is that european teams play two more qualifiers
the 'olympic qualifiers' for concacaf teams still aren't counted because you cannot count the same games multiple times

So on Monday the USWNT is playing the team that the vets lost to? What are the chances we get absolutely blown out? I know that the vets and the rest of the team had their problems when they faced Canada but they were still a significantly better team than the one we have right now. I’m not feeling optimistic about this at all and I don’t understand why more people aren’t worried
Tbh i have progressed to a state of, who even cares? I really just have no attachment to this team and USSF is doing nothing to make me feel invested.
In the end it also just really doesn't matter. I have said this before and this tournament has only proven it, Concacaf ain't that competitive. Sure Jamaica is playing nicely and Costa Rica qualified for the world cup again, but they are not at the level of Canada or the US. With Mexico underwhelming as well, there really isn't that much excitement to go around.
The worst that can truly happen in this game is the US losing and having to play in the play off game for the Olympic spot against the 3rd place winner. This will be Jamaica who they beat 5-0 or Costa Rica who they have beaten so many times i have lost count. In truth the best possible outcome is probably them losing against Canada. These players can use the practice in a playoff game that actually matters instead of another friendly.

USWNT qualifying is underwhelming bc of how concacaf region does qualifying. Because of their performance at Olympics and word cups, neither Canada or the us had to do qualifying games to get into the competition. So yes it’s only 2 games for them but in reality other teams played a lot more. Our qualifying goes through that completion whereas for other parts of the world (like Europe) they qualify mostly through qualifying games and not through the regional competition (euros)
righttt yeah

Understand if you don’t want to post since it is behind a paywall but here’s what he said: “These days, Scurry’s concerns are about manager Vlatko Andonovski. How will he adjust without attacking phenom Catarina Macario, who’s out of this summer’s World Cup and Olympics qualifying tournament with a torn ACL?
Macario’s gifted playmaking and scoring skills allowed Andonovski to adjust the team’s style away from its tradition of pounding service in to a target striker. What happens to the tactics now?
“Obviously, he’s got some time,” Scurry said, a nod to Concacaf opponents being overmatched and the World Cup being a year away. “Hopefully, because she’s young, she might recover incredibly fast, and be better than she was before, which would be fabulous. But I hope he’s learned a lesson by maybe changing his strategy of building a team around one person.”
The charge that Andonovski was building everything around Macario isn’t entirely fair, because the U.S. depth chart is vast at every position. But there’s no doubt that Macario is a generational talent. She showed it with the national team in recent months, and she showed it with her club in helping Lyon win the French league and UEFA Champions League.
“This is the first time I’ve ever really had a question about who’s coaching them, and wondering how he’s going to handle the pressure,” Scurry said. “He’s had a go with the Olympics already and didn’t hit the mark. The mark is winning everything, mind you, a really high mark — it’s probably not fair, but it is what it is. And so he’s got to get it done this time.”
If the U.S. doesn’t win next year’s World Cup, it will be the first time that the Americans have finished below first in two straight tournaments since the 2000 Olympics and 2003 World Cup.
That is, as Scurry said, an outrageous streak. And as with Naeher three years ago, Scurry hopes Andonovski’s answers turn out right. But this is the pressure of having women’s soccer’s most famous coaching job.”
oh ... I wouldn't really call that "concerns"?

this si what i found online as to reasoning why
It would be very weird to give a free berth to the winner of another tournament, but not to the winner of the tournament they are seeking to qualify for.
like canada won gold last olympics but they are playing jamica right now for the second concacaf spot. qualifiting tournaments while winable are clearly stated to be qualifiers which i think is part of the difference
Yeah… still is a weird concept to me but got it now I think
